Téma: Jak postupovat / future of the team, an LONDON — Fourth-seeded Grigor Dimitrov upset top-seeded Stan Wawrinka 6-2, 6-4 to reach the final at Queens Club on Saturday. He will play 10th-seeded Feliciano Lopez in Sundays final, after the Spanish left-hander defeated Radek Stepanek of the Czech Republic 7-6 (7), 6-4. “Its a good feeling,” Dimitrov said. “I always wanted to be in a final out here; stepping on that (court) on Sunday means a lot to me. It has always been like one of the biggest events for me, for some reason” It was the first victory in their three meetings for Dimitrov, who at 23 is the youngest player ranked in the worlds top 20. The Bulgarian took a 3-2 lead on his fourth break point when Wawrinka double-faulted, then broke again for 5-2. Wawrinka held two break points in the next game but was unable to prevent Dimitrov serving out the set, and the Swiss also failed to convert two break points for a 3-1 lead in the second set. Dimitrov broke to lead 4-3 and held on to secure a place in his third final of the year, following tournament victories in Acapulco and Bucharest. “It was not my best match,” Wawrinka said. “Didnt serve the way I wanted, and didnt move well. But Grigor was playing well, being really aggressive, serving big and mixing a lot.” Despite his defeat, Wawrinka was happy with his preparation for Wimbledon, which begins in nine days. “So far its been a positive week except today,” he said. “I was playing well. Im really happy with the practice session that I did every day. I had a lot of time on the grass, so its been really good for the preparation for Wimbledon.” Lopez and Stepanek engaged in several highly entertaining rallies and drew enthusiastic appreciation from the spectators after their spectacular points. Lopez fired a backhand winner down the line to save a break point to lead 2-1, but failed to convert any of five break points of his own when leading 3-2. The Spaniard struggled after leading the tiebreaker 6-3, finally closing out the set on his fifth set point. A break to lead 4-3 in the second set then earned Lopez a place in his first final since he won on grass at Eastbourne a year ago. wholesale jerseys . For now, Joe Girardi and the rest of the New York Yankees are just thankful they have the Japanese right-hander pitching like one of the best in baseball. The idea about the Indianapolis Colts being the first home team in the Super Bowl didnt seem so outlandish when the city was awarded the game in 2008. The Colts had already won a Super Bowl behind Peyton Manning and were regulars in the NFL playoffs. Then Manning got hurt. And the Colts collapsed quicker than a castle made of sand. Now, on the eve of what was supposed to be a glorious week in Indianapolis, the home team is a dysfunctional mess. A joint statement issued on Friday by Manning and Colts owner Jim Irsay claimed otherwise, though that was to be expected. The dirty laundry aired publicly the previous few days was so distasteful that something had to be said to get the attention off the home team and back on a game that means so much to the citys pride. Irsay says it was all a misunderstanding. Surely not anything that a good talk between friends — or, say, a payment of US$28 million owed to Manning — couldnt resolve. Manning got the talk. Whether he gets the cheque will ultimately determine just how friendly the owner and his quarterback really are. The Colts seem ready to move on without the face of their team, a player so valuable that they may not have been able to build their new stadium without him. Manning transformed a woeful team into a perennial playoff contender, taking the Colts to two Super Bowls and winning one. The prospect of even better times ahead helped Indianapolis residents swallow the increased taxes they were forced to pony up for the new $720 million stadium, which opened in 2008. The NFL gave the city a Super Bowl as a reward, something that seems to have boosted civic pride even if few area residents will actually get inside Lucas Oil Stadium for the event. As an added bonus, it gave Colts fans a chance to forget about the pitiful 2-14 record this season that was doomed the moment the first rumours about Mannings health began circulating during the summer. But Irsay couldnt stop firing people. Manning couldnt keep his mouth shut..dddddddddddd And instead of happy chatter about the Super Bowl coming to town, the buzz in Indy in recent days has been a definite downer. Theres a Manning playing in the Super Bowl, but its the wrong one. And the chances of Peyton Manning — still recovering from three neck surgeries — playing another down for the Colts seem to be about as good as the chances Indianapolis ever lands another Super Bowl. Hes owed $28 million by March 8 if the Colts are to keep him, but thats just part of the problem. The Colts are almost sure to use their No. 1 draft pick on Stanford Universitys Andrew Luck, and it doesnt make much sense to be paying millions of dollars to two different quarterbacks — especially if theres no guarantee Manning will even be healthy enough to play again. In Irsays defence, theres no real template on how to handle this. Money aside, he still has to think about the future of the team, and that future likely doesnt include an aging and suddenly fragile Manning. Irsay already sacked much of the front office and the coaching staff, something that clearly upset Manning. Hes in the midst of rebuilding the Colts, and has to be looking at Luck as the new face of the team, much like Manning was when the Colts picked him No. 1 in the 1998 draft. That it came down to the owner and the superstar sniping at each other this week was perhaps inevitable. Decision time is coming, and its becoming increasingly clear what that decision has to be. Odds are Manning is done playing for the Colts, perhaps even done playing in the NFL entirely. Those reading tea leaves surely noted that the joint statement Manning and Irsay issued on Friday contained no reference to Manning playing for the team again, no reassurance that he was healing and would be able to play quarterback again. For the next week the big question in Indianapolis will be who wins the Super Bowl. For Colts fans, though, theres an even bigger question to be answered once the game is over. Téma: Jak postupovat / s beat the Canadians 40-15 there la LAWRENCE, Kan. — There were moments of frustration for Kansas coach Bill Self, moments where hed angrily call a timeout or attend a post-game news conference and glumly bemoan another uneven performance. There never was a moment where he lost faith in his team. Now, after enduring the nations most brutal non-conference schedule, the sixth-ranked Jayhawks are proving to be exactly what the pundits thought theyd be: The Big 12s premier team, one that already has a substantial lead in the conference as the race nears its midway point. “We have grown, but were just now to the middle of the season. Thats whats so strange,” Self said. “The big thing is that were playing with more energy and were starting to understand how were going to score — not just running an offence to run an offence. Were not a tough team by any stretch, but are playing tougher than we did earlier in the season.” Thats certainly been evident in the results. After a loss to fifth-ranked San Diego State ended the Jayhawks 68-game non-conference winning streak at Allen Fieldhouse, Kansas has ripped off seven straight wins through arguably the toughest part of its league schedule. It began with a win at No. 23 Oklahoma, and continued with wins over four straight teams that were ranked in the Top 25 — Kansas State, Iowa State, Oklahoma State and Baylor. After a blowout win at TCU, the Jayhawks beat the No. 16 Cyclones for a second time on Wednesday night. Now, theyll head to No. 25 Texas with essentially a two-game lead in the Big 12. You catch the game on TSN2 on Saturday at 12am et/9pm pt. “Im not surprised at all,” junior guard Naadir Tharpe said. “I knew it was going to be a matter of time until everybody just let water run off their back and start going out there and just playing. That is what I feel like dudes are doing right now.” The most important of them may be Andrew Wiggins, the highly touted freshman. After fits and starts to begin his college career, the 6-foot-8 swingman and projected lottery pick in the June draft has gone on a tear. Wiggins scored a career-high 27 points in the win over the Horned Frogs, and then bested it with 29 points against the Cyclones earlier this week. Hes averaging more than 24 points over his past three games. “I would say I feel more comfortable on the court,” Wiggins said this week. “A lot of things are slowing down for me and my teammates are looking for me.” Hes also starting to create his own shot, something that he was reticent to do early in the season, prompting Iowa State coach Fred Hoiberg to say hes "oozing with confidence. “Thats scary,” Hoiberg said. “With that athleticism, that length and that speed, the kids got it all. When hes knocking down shots, not too many better.” There arent many teams better than the Jayhawks right now. Since the start of league play, the nine-time defending champions are putting up a Big 12-leading 84 points per game. Theyre just a half-point out of second place in scoring defence, and their scoring margin of 12 points per game is seven better than second-place Oklahoma State. The Jayhawks (16-4, 7-0 Big 12) also lead the league in field-goal and 3-point percentage, rebounding defence and margin, blocked shots, assists and, well, you get the idea. “They have a special group,” TCU coach Trent Johnson said. “At every position, they have somebody who can score. They can attack you, so you really have to be on your toes.” After the Jayhawks, Texas may be the next hottest team in the Big 12 heading into Saturdays game. The Longhorns (16-4, 5-2) have rattled off five straight wins, the last three coming against ranked teams in Iowa State, Kansas State and Baylor. The Jayhawks will represent the first time in school history that Texas will have played four consecutive Top 25 opponents. “Theyre young. Theyre not quite as young as we are, but theyre young and fast, probably as fast as any team well play,” Self said. “Theyre obviously playing their tails off.” . Booth, 28, has missed the last four games with a lower body injury and has appeared in 11 of 16 games for the Canucks this season, recording one goal and two assists. TORONTO — Canada may have been within a couple of points of knocking off a Tier 1 rugby team Saturday, but there was no celebrating in the Canadian locker-room after the game. A controversial penalty in the dying minutes made sure of that. The Canadians dropped a 19-17 decision to Scotland in an international Test match at BMO Field — a country that sits a full eight positions higher than them on the world rankings. But Canada was in position to win with five minutes to go when the referee reversed his decision on a call, after originally awarding Canada a penalty kick. “Im gutted actually for the guys, they really put it all in,” said Canadian coach Kieran Crowley. “Positives are . . . we ran a Tier 1 country to two points, thats a pretty good effort.” On the controversial play in the 75th minute, Canadian flanker Jebb Sinclair had the ball, his forearm made contact with Ruaridh Jackson, and the Scottish player was knocked out cold. The referee initially awarded a penalty kick to Canada, but reversed the call after reviewing video. “I dont know what you mean to do with your elbow in that situation when a guy gets his head on the wrong side,” Crowley said “He refereed it how he saw it, and I thought it was the wrong decision. But thats the way he sees it.” Jeff Hassler scored Canadas lone try while James Pritchard booted for 12 Canadian points. Grant Gilchrist scored the single try for Scotland, while Greig Laidlaw kicked four penalties and a conversion. Hassler scored in the 23rd minute, after Ciaran Hearn broke through the Scottish midfield and sprinted 30 metres down the sideline in front of a red-and-clad crowd of 18,788 fans — plus the odd Scottish fan dressed in a kilt — at BMO Field. “Its always good to get one on the board early in front of the home fans, it was a bit of a spark for us, just good team play and a good finish,” Hassler said. The Canadians were looking to bounce back from a 34-25 loss to Japan in a Pacific Nations Cup game a week earlier in Burnaby, B.C. — an ugly affair that saw the Canadians give up 25 unanswered points in the second half. While it was expected the No. 16-ranked Canadians would be in for a much tougher afternoon against the eighth-ranked Scots, they made Scotland work for the win — the first Scottish victory on Canadian soil. “Its pretty gutting,” Hassler said of the close loss. “Its not the first time weve been in that position and its something that we as a Canadian team need to improve on and start knocking off some of these teams in the last couple of minutes of the game. Locker-room is pretty disappointed, but we know were right there.” Gilchrist scored in the 27th minute, muscling his way across the try line after some strong work from the Scottish forwards. Scotland took a 13-8 lead into the dressing room at halftime. Pritchard booted four penalty kicks, plus a conversion. He had a chance to give Canada the lead with 15 minutes to play, but his kick banged off the post. He made good on his next attempt to put the Canadians up 17-16. But Laidlaw booted his fourth of the day to put the Scots back on top with eigght minutes to play.dddddddddddd Stuart Hogg also had a penalty kick for the Scots, who were coming off a 24-6 victory over the United States a week earlier in Houston. “Not happy at all with the outcome,” said Canadian captain Tyler Ardron. “Im sure that call (on Sinclair) is whats going to be talked a lot about this week, but in all honesty I dont think it should have come down to that. I think we should have closed it out before that and its shouldnt have made a difference.” Despite the close loss, Ardron said this game didnt sit with him any better than last weeks defeat at the hands of Japan. “Its the same feeling, I think we should have won both those games, but its not good enough to sit back and say we should have won those games,” he said. “We have to win them. If we want to get to where we feel we should be, thats got to be our attitude.” Scotlands coach Vern Cotter admitted the call on Sinclair that reduced Canada to 14 men “changed momentum” of the game. “(The Canadians) were attacking at that stage,” said Cotter, after his second game with Scotland. “Always in these games, little things make the difference. A little thing turned out to be a big thing and had a reasonably big consequence on the result.” Cotter praised the Canadian side that is “developing rapidly.” He added the Canadians clearly came out at the opening whistle bent on making up for last weekends disappointing result against Japan. “They were very angry, you could see in the first couple of rucks, there was a couple of exchanges, they obviously wanted to impose physically,” Cotter said. "I think thats part of their team psyche, they enjoy that type of thing. “I think they played particularly well. . . theyre doing some good things.” The BMO Field crowd was positive on the afternoon — another strong rugby turnout at the lakeside venue that Canadian players have dubbed their unofficial home. Some 22,566 fans squeezed into BMO Field to watch the Maori All Blacks beat the Canadians 40-15 there last November — a North American record crowd for the sport. Canadas loss to Ireland a few months earlier drew 20,396 fans to the stadium that is normally home to Major League Soccers Toronto FC. “It felt awesome,” said Ardron, who grew up in Lakefield, Ont., just north of Peterborough. “Its so hard to comment on how good it felt now after such a devastating loss, a close game like that. But having the support behind us the whole game felt great.” The game was Scotlands first victory over Canada on Canadian soil. Canada had beaten Scotland twice at home — 24-19 in 1991 in Saint John, N.B., and 26-23 in Vancouver in 2002. Theyve met two times in Scotland, both Scottish victories — 22-2 in Edinburgh in 1995 and 41-0 in Aberdeen in 2008. The game was halted for about 10 minutes midway through the first half while medical staff attended to Scotlands Alasdair Strokosch. Strokosch was eventually wheeled off the pitch on a stretcher. Téma: Jak postupovat / d. J.D. Martinezs throw ha LONDON — Tim Sherwoods first game in full charge of Tottenham ended in disappointment as Emmanuel Adebayors error gifted West Bromwich a 1-1 draw in the English Premier League on Thursday. Within two minutes of Christian Eriksen putting Tottenham ahead from a free kick, Adebayor miscued Morgan Amalfitanos cross and Jonas Olsson tapped in easily from close range to equalize in the 38th minute. The draw saw Tottenham drop to eighth place, while West Brom was 15th. “We should have played better and we are capable of playing better,” Sherwood said. “I thought we could be a bit more adventurous around the penalty box and show a little more guile.” Sherwood was hired on an 18-month contract to replace Andre Villas-Boas on Monday after two games in temporary charge, including a 3-2 victory at Southampton in the league last weekend. “Its a gamble because Ive never done it before,” the 44-year-old Sherwood said. “But there are a lot of good managers who had never done it before and become a success. I was never a professional footballer until I stepped on to the field.” The fact that he only has a contract until the end of next season has prompted suggestions that Sherwood is keeping the seat warm for someone with more experience. “I regard (that) as an insult, but it is only an insult if I go and win all the games,” Sherwood said. “What can we do? If we win all the games and someone else comes in and keeps it and brings someone else in after Ive won the league then Im going to Real Madrid,” he added with a smile. West Brom is still searching for a replacement for Steve Clarke, who was fired last month. Keith Downing is in temporary charge. “I hope (an appointment) is close for the players sake,” said Downing, who will stay in London with his players ahead of Saturdays game against West Ham. Téma: Jak postupovat / reement that will include a reve CALGARY – Embarrassed 7-2 by the Calgary Flames two weeks ago, the Anaheim Ducks returned to the scene of that ugly loss Wednesday night and picked up an important victory. Andrew Cogliano scored the go-ahead goal at 14:41 as Anaheim scored twice in the third period in a 3-2 victory over the resilient Flames. “Thats one of the biggest two points of the season, for sure,” said Cogliano. “To come back from behind in the third period, it shows where were going as a team and I think its a big statement win for us.” Stephane Robidas shot from the blue-line was kicked out by Karri Ramo but the puck went right to Cogliano at the face-off circle, who buried his 21st of the season. “Right place at the right time. It landed right on my stick. When I saw the net, no better feeling,” said Cogliano, who put a shot off the post just minutes earlier. “Those are the goals were trying to score, especially myself. Getting to the net, getting some rebounds.” Finishing it off wasnt easy, however. The Flames poured on the pressure in the final minute with the goalie pulled. Mike Cammalleris blast came the closest to getting past Anaheim goalie Jonas Hiller, but the Ducks hung on. “Its one of those things where theyre just throwing everything at the net and youre trying to find the puck somehow. I found it once or twice there so we could at least get a whistle,” said Hiller, who had 32 saves. It was a nice bounce-back game for him after getting chased less than 12 minutes into the last start at the Scotiabank Saddledome after yielding three goals on five shots. “The whole team was upset with what happened last time. I didnt feel I played terribly or whatever but those things happen and its nice if you get a chance pretty quick to do better,” said Hiller. “Definitely happy with the way we responded and the way I responded. I thought we played a pretty good road game.” Nick Bonino and Mathieu Perreault also scored for Anaheim (47-18-7), which kicks off a three-game road trip to Western Canada with its sixth road win in its last eight games away from the Honda Center. The win moves the Ducks to within two points of the San Jose Sharks and the lead in the Pacific Division. Anaheim still holds two games in hand. Hiller says winning the division is definitely a priority. “It would be great to be up there because if youre second, you have a good chance of playing L.A. in the first round which would be a tough match-up,” Hiller said. Brian McGrattan and Jiri Hudler scored for Calgary (30-36-7). Rookie defenceman Tyler Wotherspoon had an assist to give the 21-year-old points in his last three games. “Thats the way you learn sometimes, too. You learn from tough losses,” said McGrattan, who was playing his 300th NHL game. “Our group hasnt given up all year. Were in every game and work our butts off right until the end and thats a good sign.” Its the Flames league-leading 44th one-goal game, one shy of the franchise record set in 2005-06. “If you look at the young guys throughout the year, how theyre showing up against these teams late in the year when were playing San Jose, L.A., Anaheim — were playing all these top teams down the stretch and were giving them a run for the money every night. Thats a lot to build off of as a group and its a lot to learn from,” said McGrattan. Trailing 2-1 headed to the third period, the Ducks tied it at 5:32 on Perreaults 16th goal. “We fought hard in the third and got a couple bounces our way and finally we were able to put it in and win the game,” said Perreault, who extended his point streak to six games (four goals, two assists). “Coming down the stretch, we play a couple teams that are already out of the playoffs. We have to take advantage of those games.” Trailing 1-0 after the first period, the Flames scored twice in the second to take the lead. The tying goal, which bounced off Kevin Westgarths glove in front and then into the net off of McGrattans hip was the rugged wingers fourth goal and 10th of his career. Calgary took a 2-1 lead with 26 seconds left in the second when a pretty fake shot then pass from Ladislav Smid set up Hudler. “Its a good effort. We know we can play with every team in the league but its not good enough — a good effort, we have to get results too. Thats the business of hockey,” said Ramo, who had won his previous five decisions. Ramo, who had 31 stops, had his record fall to 13-11-4. Hiller improves to 29-11-6. “They paid the price and when they came to the net, they had a lot of shots and a lot of traffic with them,” said Ramo. “They were into the game today, unlike the last game. I think they had a chip on their shoulders when they came here today.” Notes: On the eve of the one-year anniversary of the trade of Jarome Iginla to Pittsburgh, the two players they received in return – LW Kenny Agostino and RW Ben Hanowski, were both healthy scratches for the Flames… Calgary LW TJ Galiardi drew back in after missing the past two games… Not in the line-up for Anaheim were D Francois Beauchemin, C Daniel Winnik and LW Matt Beleskey… Anaheims 22nd road victory ties the franchise record, previously done in 2006-07 and in 2008-09. Louis Blues remain at the top spot of the TSN.Following unproductive meetings with Canadian Football League executives and the leagues legal counsel Friday, the Canadian Football League Players Association has decided to take a significant step to emphasize its solidarity in negotiations: The union has begun sending strike ballots by priority mail. A player confirmed to TSN on the condition of anonymity that he received his ballot yesterday. Another confirms hes been told to expect his shortly. “The unions executive committee insists a strike vote does not mean were pushing away from the table,” the player said. “But we want the league to know were serious about our position.” The players executive committee includes union president Scott Flory, vice-presidents Jay McNeil, Marwan Hage and Jeff Keeping and treasurer Brian Ramsay. Keeping (Toronto Argonauts) and Ramsay (Edmonton Eskimos) are the two active players on the committee. The league and players are still scheduled to meet in Toronto Wednesday – eight days before the current CBA is set to expire oon May 29 – when the players will table a new proposed collective bargaining agreement that will include a revenue sharing scheme with the union requesting a percentage of gate, sponsorship and television revenue.ddddddddddddWith each revenue stream the union is proposing its share be in the range of approximately 40-55 per cent. The proposal includes a salary cap of approximately $7 million in the first year of a new CBA. In 2013, the last year of the current agreement, the salary cap was $4.4 million. The league has so far been reluctant to discuss any revenue sharing model. “Weve been told to expect a step back tomorrow (from the owners),” the player says. The CFLPA requires more than 50 per cent of its players to confirm a strike vote. But the players must adhere to provincial labour laws, and cannot picket immediately. According to a source with knowledge of the talks, only players in certain provinces, where a strike vote can happen before the current bargaining expires, have received their ballots. Téma: Jak postupovat / s cut Edmontons lead to TORONTO — An exercise rider died Tuesday after being crushed by a thoroughbred at Torontos Woodbine Racetrack in what officials described as a “freak accident.” Police said the rider was in the saddle around 6 a.m., when the horse went into an “unexplained wild gallop,” showing signs of medical distress. The rider, who was identified as Mourad Boudraa, 40, was crushed into the track railing and then by the weight of the horse as it collapsed. Jamie Martin, vice-president of Woodbine Entertainment Group, said Boudraa was originally from Morocco and had three to four years of experience as an exercise rider. “He was a freelance so he worked for a number of trainers,” Martin said. “I would say its a freak accident.” The horse, Tawneys Wish, died of what Woodbine Racetrack officials said was believed to be a heart attack. The three-year-old dark filly had one start this year and $368 in winnings. Mike Pownall, an equine veterinarian, said the horses cause of death wont be known until a necropsy is performed. “Its like when you find those athletes that suddenly die and you find theres a heart defect, that would be the human equivalency,” Pownall said. “You have no idea it was existing, or you could prevent it, or you could do anything to alter the course.” In 2011, Canadian Olympic champion Eric Lamaze was riding his horse Hickstead in Italy when the animal suddenly collapsed and died of an acute aortic rupture. The horse had carried Lamaze to gold and silver at the Beijing Olympics in show jumping. The Ontario Racing Commission, which requires a necropsy whenever a racehorse dies, collects information for a database on common racehorse injuries in the hopes of minimizing future problems, Pownall said. Pownall said working with horses carries inherent risk and those involved in the industry are all too aware of what can go wrong. “They know the potential for unexplained, sudden things to happen,” he said. “Its a hazard of the job.” But in the tight-knit horseracing community in Canada, word travels fast when there is an injury or fatality, he said. “I was sad for the horse, sad for the rider. Nobody wants that. Im proud of the riders that go out there every day and proud of the horses that go out there,” he said, adding that Woodbine Racetrack is a “well-regarded track” in terms of safety standards. Officials from the provincial Ministry of Labour are investigating the accident. A necropsy on the horse is set to be performed at the University of Guelph. Keegan Iverson scored the overtime winner as the Winterhawks erased a three-goal, third-period deficit to snap a three-game losing skid and defeat the Edmonton Oil Kings 6-5 on Sunday, sending the Western Hockey League championship to a seventh game. Portland trailed 5-2, but battled back to tie the game. The Winterhawks completed the comeback when Iverson tipped a Dominic Turgeon shot past Edmonton goalie Tristan Jarry 7:23 into overtime. “Thats definitely the biggest goal of my life,” Iverson said. "I was just in shock when I scored. “Its been such an unbelievable series. Its been crazy. Its going to be quite the final game.” The seventh and deciding game of the WHL final will take place Monday in Portland. Mathew Dumba had a pair of goals and Anton Cederholm, Keoni Texeira and Derrick Pouliot also scored for the Winterhawks, who had dropped three straight after owning a 2-0 advantage to start the best-of-seven finals. Prior to the three losses in the finals, the Winterhawks had only lost three games in their previous 45 outings. “We knew we just had to stick with it,” said Portland head coach Mike Johnston. “We have the ability to score and have built that confidence throughout the year. Our guys were great. They played through it. It was a great character win. Its unusual to look at a scoresheet and see five defencemen scoring like we had tonight.” Dumba credited goalie Corbin Boes, who was pulled after the first period, for firing the team up before the comeback. “He gave one of the most inspiring speeches I have ever heard,” Dumba said. “He stood up like a 20-year-old should and made a great speech. He said he had never been on a team that is so tightly-knit like this and he wanted to keep it going. He believed in all of us and he got really emotional and I think it hit home with all of us. Just talking about it now gives me chills.” Henrik Samuelsson and Edgars Kulda each had two-goal games and Curtis Lazar also scored for the Oil Kings, who lost for the first time at home in the playoffs, dropping to 10-1. “Its the old story, you have to play 60 minutes and we played about 35 before we sat back a bit,” said Oil Kings head coach Derek Laxdal. “It is what it is. We are headed to a Game 7. It didnt look very good for us coming back from being down 2-0 in the series and our mindset has to be that we will take another chance to win this tomorrow.” Edmonton captain Griffin Reinhart agreed that his team missed out on an opportunity, but can take solace in having one more chance. “We got the lead and were maybe a llittle bit too comfortable,” he said.dddddddddddd "We played not to lose rather than to win. It is a tough loss, but tomorrow is a new day and we have to bounce back. “I think our adrenaline is going to be big tomorrow. Its a seven-game series for a reason.” Ten WHL finals have gone to a seventh game, and not one has been captured by the visiting team. Edmonton carried over the momentum from their previous three wins to get off to a great start in front of a WHL playoff-high crowd of 11,902 at Rexall Place. The Oil Kings took a 1-0 lead five minutes into the first period with a power-play goal. A Dysin Mayo shot hit Mitch Moroz on the way to the net and Samuelsson was able to poke his seventh of the playoffs past Boes. Samuelsson notched his second goal of the game 1:26 later as Moroz forced a turnover deep in Portland territory and sent it across the ice. Samuelsson blasted the puck off of Boes glove and in to put the Oil Kings up 2-0. Edmonton took a three-goal advantage with 51 seconds remaining in the first period as Kuldas shot found its way through a maze of players and into the Portland net. Brendan Burke came in to replace Boes in the Portland net to start the second period. Portland got on the board less than four minutes into the second as Dumbas point blast beat Jarry on a 5-on-3 man advantage. The Winterhawks made it 3-2 with seven minutes left in the second as Cederholm came down the left side and picked the top corner with a wrist shot. Just 45 seconds after Portlands goal, Edmontons Reid Petryk picked off a pass and sent a backhander to Lazar, and the Ottawa Senators prospect scored his ninth of the playoffs. Less than a minute later, Edmonton made it 5-2 as Mayo made a long lead pass to give Kulda a breakaway, and he beat Burke stick side for his second of the game. The Winterhawks cut Edmontons lead to two goals again with Dumbas second goal, also on the power play goal three minutes into the third. Portland made it 5-4 with 14 minutes remaining as De Leo put a puck on net and Texeira got it under Jarry and into the net. The Hawks tied the game with just under nine minutes left as Pouliot blew the puck past Jarry to eventually send the game to overtime. Notes: Its the third consecutive season that the Oil Kings and Winterhawks have met in the WHL Championship Series. Edmonton defeated Portland in seven games to win in 2012, while Portland won in six games last year. a It is just the second time in league history that two teams have met in the WHL final three years in a row. The last time was when the original Edmonton Oil Kings (who ended up moving to Portland to become the Winterhawks) played the Flin Flon Bombers three times from 1969-71. Téma: Jak postupovat / Gilberto but wants to I spent the past weekend at the 2014 Sloan Sports Analytics Conference in Boston. It was my fifth straight year attending and, as always, there are many interesting matters discussed as it pertains to the use of statistics in sports. While analytics if the focus of the conference, there are always some discussions that are more wide-ranging in nature, so Ill try to cover as much as I can, with this write-up providing a more general overview of the conference before I post the second part, which will focus more specifically on the hockey content. NBA COMMISSIONER ADAM SILVER NBA Commissioner Adam Silver was impressive in a one-on-one interview with Malcolm Gladwell. Gladwell grilled Silver and, for the most part, he was forthcoming with his responses. Now, when Gladwell hammered away at the greed of some NBA owners, foremost among his concerns was the Dolans in New York, getting tax breaks as they arent required to pay property taxes on Madison Squate Garden, one of the most valuable pieces of land in Manhattan. For as much grief as Gladwell takes in some quarters for the pop science in his books, he was a great choice to interview Silver because he wasnt afraid to ask the commish difficult questions, yet did so, with follow-up queries, without the interview getting uncomfortable or contentious. Some of that goes to Silver, who was forthcoming in his responses or, when defending the tax positions of billionaire owners, was clearly speaking from the commissioner playbook. There are times its transparently difficult to defend the indefensible. BASKETBALL ANALYTICS Silver talked about the removing disincentive for teams to win and this was a big topic at the conference. It speaks to the situation in which the NBA finds itself this year, with a handful of teams competing for the title and perhaps twice as many aiming for a top lottery pick. Houston Rockets GM, and Conference Co-Chair, Daryl Morey plainly stated that the NBA has to find a way to eliminate tanking incentive. New Sacramento Kings owner Vivek Ranadive joked with Boston Celtics owner Wyc Grousbeck, on a panel about Ownership Perspective, that Silver said the Celtics were tanking, to which Grousbeck quickly replied, “And what you are you doing?” The Kings are currently 23rd in the NBA standings, the Celtics 27th. Former Toronto Raptors GM Bryan Colangelo even caused a stir when he admitted to tanking. “I tried to tank a couple of years ago,” he said on the In-Game Innovations panel. “It didnt work.” Colangelo made it clear that he never told player or coaches not to do their best to win but, as anyone seeing how teams are constructed would understand, management can put together a roster that is less likely to win games. Former coach Stan Van Gundy is not a fan of the tanking. He ripped the Philadelphia 76ers, with Sixers GM Sam Hinkie in the audience, saying, “What the 76ers are doing is embarrassing. Cant put out that lineup and think they can win.” Boston Celtics Assistant GM Mike Zarren, a panelist every year at the conference, has proposed a wheel format that would replace the current draft and its a fascinating theory, definitely one that would remove the incentive for tanking, but there are practical issues at play too. Silver loved the idea initially, but acknowledged that there will be some hurdles to overcome if that kind of solution is going to happen in reality. Silver also mentioned how NBA players have approached the league about a mid-season break for all, noting how All-Stars dont get a break and the grind of the season can be taxing on the leagues best players, logging more than 30 minutes a night, night after night. This was particularly interesting, given all the recent complaints in NHL circles about the Olympic break. The most shocking admission from Silver was that he acknowledged how gambling and point spreads increase interest in games that might otherwise be mismatches. This is no secret to the world at large, but the nature of all league commissioners has been to dismiss out of hand the benefits that the league might receive from gambling. When discussing how much teams ought to be spending on analytics, Colangelo put the range between $250,000 and $500,000 per year. When you consider the size of contracts in professional sports, its not unreasonable to think that an analytics department could lead to decisions that would save at least that much. One of the great developments in terms of NBA statistics is the emergence of SportVu data. Among the countless things tracked by the SportVu cameras, they can track how far a player has run — Trail Blazers SF Nicolas Batum is up to nearly 160 miles for the season — and Grantlands Zach Lowe, moderating the Basketball Analytics panel, wonders if that kind of data will really prove to have value in terms of injury prevention. The detail of this tracking data is so new that its difficult to know, but its easy enough to see how, someday, knowing the specifics as it relates to a players workload could result is more efficient usage in order to reduce the chances of injury. To counter, Van Gundy vehemently disagreed with playing time limits because he felt it was a lot of guesswork and cited the Washington Nationals decision to shut down Stephen Strasburg in 2012 as a random determination. “How did they come up with 160 innings,” asked Van Gundy. “Why not 170?” Van Gundy insisted that professional sports come with a risk of injury and that not playing obviously reduces that risk, but only because no one will get hurt when they arent actually participating. As the old-school NBA guy, Van Gundy also insisted that there is no substitute for watching film, and that the only numbers he trusts are ones that his own people keep. The trouble with this approach, of course, is that if the only statistics that matter are kept by internal sources, then biases are more apt to creep in than if it is a league-wide measurement. No one pointed this out to Van Gundy, but it could also be said that the value of statistics isnt so much in learning more about your own team. It can certainly help, but helping to provide value and context for players throughout the league is where statistics can provide much more information. As ESPNs Director of Production Analytics Dean Oliver noted on another panel (re: college football playoffs), “A human can see a game better than the numbers can, but the numbers can see every game.” While I use some of Van Gundys comments to echo a point made by Steve Kerr, the former Suns GM, who noted that getting buy-in from some coaches remains an issue, its not as if Van Gundy is a total dinosaur and its enitrely possible that a coach views the game differently than those tasked with building long-term. As Van Gundy stated, “When youre coaching, youre coaching to your personnel, not to an analytics philosophy,” and theres some measure of truth in that, because theres no point in having an analytics stategy that doesnt fit your personnel. As part of the In-Game Innovations Panel, George Karl was quite progressive in his thinking, but acknowledged that he had a track record that allowed him more flexibility, contrasting with younger coaches who can get crucified (by media, fans) for trying to be innovative. Misaligned goals is a common problem for professional sports teams and its part of the reason that there was a panel at Sloan this year entitled Inside the War Room: Building Alignment from Front Office to Field. It featured Atlanta Falcons GM Thomas Dimitroff and Heach Coach Mike Smith and its an issue that is pervasive when it comes to applying analytics to professional sports. Its one thing to have Mark Cuban as your owner and the organization falls in line because the owner takes a clear position and its another to have a general manager trying to keep his job and a head coach trying to keep his job and they arent necessarily pulling in the same direction to achieve their respective goals. Furthermore, as Boston Celtics coach Brad Stevens noted, “We live in a day and age with so much more information,” he said. “The challenge is communicating that information to the team.” Stevens admitted that some players, like Rajon Rondo, would devour the analytics because thats the way hes wired (“He could be here,” Stevens joked.), but that other players arent wired that way, so it falls on the coaches to try to get their point across in a way that will appeal to players on their terms. Its not easy to get players to buy into stats. On my flight home from Boston, I happened to read a feature on Tom Brady during which Brady made a couple of seemingly contradictory statements, one of which was, “I would say I perform at a much higher level as a player now than I did when we won Super Bowls.” The other was: “Theres one stat that matters, and thats wins.” When youre a player, wins are what matter; thats the objective. What analytics will tell us, though, is that Brady is precisely right that he is playing better now than he did when New England was winning Super Bowls, the last of which came after the 2004 season. That his team hasnt won the championship does not mean that Bradys individual performance has declined, a position that is taken altogether too often when evaluating the performance of individual players. A lot that is beyond the control of one individual goes into whether a team wins or loses a game, let alone a championship. As the Godfather of Analytics, Bill James offered a measured response for coaches, particularly as it applied to in-game innovation. James said that coaches are control freaks, but chaos can be useful, so the best coaches learn to appreciate the chaos. This was followed by Morey telling a story about when Jeff Van Gundy was the coach in Houston and Morey had printouts for all the plays that the Rockets would run, with measures for efficiency and Morey didnt recognize the code for the most effective play, so he asked Van Gundy. “Thats Random,” said the coach, “when the (called) play breaks down.” Sometimes all the analysis and planning goes out the window and you just have to let the players play. BASEBALL ANALYTICS Stepping aside from the NBA for a bit, it comes as no surprise that baseball would be well-represented at a sports analytics conference. After all, baseball brought us the aformentioned Mrl James and Moneyball — the kind of objective analysis that is at the core of modern analytics. The baseball panel, which was likely the best panel of the conference — at least the best I saw, using my Panel Analytics — was moderated by MLB Networks Brian Kenny and that set the right tone. Kenny favours an analytical approach and the panel included Vince Gennaro, Bill Squadron, Rob Neyer, Nate Silver (of 538 fame) and Houston Astros GM Jeff Luhnow. To no ones surprise, a panel full of analytics-oriented people had an interesting conversation about advances in analytics. Even at a point when Kenny ventured towards the idea about whether there would be a way to actually measure chemistry, he did so with some obvious skepticism and I was in full agreement with Neyers point that there are plenty of teams with great chemistry that dont win and teams with horrible chemistry — citing the Oakland As and New York Yankees of the 1970s — that won a lot. My take is that chemistry is the kind of thing that gets awarded to winners after the fact. Sure, the Red Sox won the World Series because they had great clubhouse chemistry, but would that chemistry have been any different if they didnt win? Luhnow later said, “There is no correlation between being a nice guy or a good person and being a good baseball player.” The character issue is a tricky one when it comes to sports. No one wants to work with someone that is a pain in the butt, but if that person can help you win, sometimes the decision isnt so easy. Neyer also noted how economics havent quite caught up with analytics. “Does anyone get paid for pitch-framing,” he asked, addressing one of the hottest evolutions in defensive data |

Téma: Jak postupovat / rom a streak of th SURREY, B.C. — Wally Buono is glad he was wrong about Andrew Harris. Then the B.C. Lions head coach and general manager, Buono had a different vision for the Winnipeg native than the one that has played out since he became the clubs feature running back midway through the 2011 season. “Smart as I was, I wanted to make a safety out of him,” said Buono, now the Lions GM and vice-president of operations. “I think it just shows you the kind of athlete Andrew is. Football has never been too big for him. Its just finding a place for him.” That place is in Vancouver for at least the next two seasons after the Lions signed Harris to a contract extension witha guaranteed base salary of $145,000 on Wednesday that will keep him with the team through 2015. With incentives, the deal could be worth as much as $175,000. Harris was a junior football star in the province before signing with the Lions, first making the practice roster and then special teams. “My career has been a bit of journey and I wouldnt want to have it any other way,” Harris said as he met the media at the Lions practice facility. “Its been ups and downs and thats part of a career. The one nice thing about this is its another step to another chapter.” The soon-to-be 27-year-old Harris decided to move to Vancouver full-time this off-season despite a trying 2013 campaign that saw B.C.s running game struggle for long stretches. “For me its a very good day, and I think for the province and the organization its a good day,” said Buono. “For an individual to call this place home after going back and forth I think speaks volumes for what Andrew wants to be a part of. In the organization, you want to keep your assets and hes been a tremendous asset for us.” The five-foot-11, 213-pound Harris has rushed for 2,568 yards on 481 carries (5.3-yard average) with 15 TDs during his career, quickly making him one of the premier Canadian running backs in the game. “Hes an elite player,” said Lions head coach Mike Benevides. “Hes dynamic, and the combination of he and the other guys weve got on our roster will bode well for us.” Harris rushed for 998 yards and seven touchdowns last season, while leading all CFL backs with 61 receptions for 513 yards. His 1,511 yards from scrimmage in 2013 not only led his team, it was more than 400 yards ahead of the next player. But the Lions ground attack lost its way last season, going 10 games without a 100-yard rusher. Harris totalled just 10 yards on two separate occasions during that dry spell, but he never let the adversity affect him, at least in public. “It was tremendously frustrating for all of us, not just Andrew,” said Benevides. “He was the byproduct of everything around him. The biggest thing that I think people discredit is the teammate that he is, the pro that hes matured into.” The addition of running back Stefan Logan, who started his career with the Lions back in 2008 before jumping to the NFL, and new blocking schemes on the leaky offensive line helped get the ground game back on track by October. “At the end of the day there was still a solid nucleus. I had faith in the coaches, I had a feeling the coaches still had faith in me and it was just a matter of getting everything put together,” said Harris, who has never missed a game in his four CFL seasons. "Sometimes it takes a while to get things on the right course and get things going. “Thats what makes a team and makes a brotherhood and a family. I really think that more than ever the nucleus of this team is really close and were building towards a championship team.” Now the diminutive Logan and the power-running Harris are set to spend an entire season together sharing the workload for new offensive co-ordinator Khari Jones. “Its one of those things where someone makes a play, you want to make a play as well and we feed off each other,” said Harris. “Thats one side of it, and then staying healthy. Were both going to be very fresh. Its going to be a great season and Im very excited about it.” The pressure will be on to produce title-calibre results in 2014, with the Lions set to host the Grey Cup at B.C. Place Stadium in November. Harris is one of the constants on a team that has seen a huge exodus of both assistant coaches and players this off-season following an 11-7 campaign that ended with a loss to the eventual Grey Cup-champion Saskatchewan Roughriders in the West Division semifinal. “Ive always been part of championship teams and this organization is looked on as a championship team. Any time you dont get to the championship its unsuccessful,” said Harris. "Thats the goal. Thats the mindset. This 2014 season with the Grey Cup here is absolutely a redemption year. “We want to be feared at the end of the season going into the playoffs.” http://www.greeceai…] . Téma: Jak postupovat / ple who are selectin GOODYEAR, Ariz. — Outfielder Austin Kearns was re-signed by the Cleveland Indians, who felt the veteran could have a positive influence on the majors youngest team. They didnt expect any trouble from him. On Tuesday, the Indians expressed disappointment after learning Kearns was arrested in Kentucky last month on suspicion of drunk driving — just days before he reported to training camp. Kearns didnt tell the Indians about the arrest, which took place on Feb. 12 in Lexington, his hometown. The club didnt find out about the incident until late Monday night. Kearns met with manager Manny Acta and general manager Chris Antonetti at the teams training complex on Tuesday. “We talked,” Kearns said, “and were all on the same page.” Antonetti refused to discuss any specifics of Kearns situation, and repeatedly deferred to a statement the team released in which the GM said “the Indians organization takes these issues very seriously and is disappointed by the circumstances.” Kearns spoke with reporters outside the clubhouse on Tuesday, a few hours before the Indians hosted the Los Angeles Dodger in an exhibition. Kearns said he did not tell the team about his arrest on the advice of his attorneys. He also declined to discuss any details of his arrest. “Some stuff is still in the process of whatever the legal process is,” he said. “I cant really talk about anything.” Kearns arrest was first reported by the Jessamine (Ky.) Journal. According to the paper, the 30-year-old Kearns was arrested after being stopped by an off-duty Lexington police officer, who said Kearns was “flashing his headlights and weaving” in a 2007 Cadillac Escalade. Kearns posted bond and has a court appearance scheduled for March 10. Kearns said his attorney will represent him in court. He would not say if he is contesting the DUI charge. Citing the police report, the paper said Kearns told a sheriffs deputy that hed had a “a couple bourbon and cokes.” According to the report, Kearns refused a field sobriety test and was “very unsteady on his feet.” Kearns reportedly told the officer he was a professional baseball player “and asked if I could cut him a break.” Kearns said he saw the report, but had no comment about whether he asked for special treatment. The Indians signed Kearns to a one-year, $1.3 million contract in December. He began last season with Cleveland before being traded to the New York Yankees on July 30 for minor league pitcher Zach McAllister. He batted a combined .263 with 10 homers and 49 RBIs. Miikka Kiprusoff had just announced his retirement after a decade-long run in Calgary and it would be up to Berra and Ramo to fill the void. It was a tall order and the Flames struggled at the start of the season. But there finally appear to be signs that the team may be ready to turn things around. Berra and Ramo have helped Calgary to a 5-4-2 record in its last 11 games, with three losses coming in close games against league heavyweights Pittsburgh and Boston. Berra entered the holiday break on a high after helping the Flames to a 4-3 shootout win Monday over the surging St. Louis Blues. He made 32 saves and stopped all three shots in the shootout to improve to 5-8-2 on the season. Berra is also a perfect 3-0 in shootouts, an area in which Kiprusoff historically struggled (23-37). “Overall Im happy with where I am,” he said. "For my first year over here, Ive played solid, Ive played calm and Ive played my game. “I want to have more wins but sometimes you cant control that.” Once described by former Flames general manager Jay Feaster as the “best goaltenders not playing in the NHL,” Berra and Ramo are still adjusting to the league since coming over from Europe. The ice surface is smaller and there is more traffic in front of the net. “One thing Ive been working on is trying to track the puck and follow it with my body,” said Berra. "Also, guys here shoot perfect shots so you cant just go down and hope it hits you, you have to read the shot. Thats a big part of where Im way better than at the start of the season. “I can read the shots and where theyre coming.” Ramo, who spent the last four seasons in the KHL, is more familiar with the North American game than his teammate. The 27-year-old native of Asikkala, Finland spent three seasons in the Tampa Bay organization after being selected by the Lightning in the sixth round of the 2004 entry draft. “Im trying to be quicker with my positioning so I can get set and see more pucks,” said Ramo. "If you can play a little bit more outside the crease and still be quick, thats always better. Berra, a 26-year-old native of Bulach, Switzerland, said he has also noticed a big difference in the number of blocked shots. One of the trademarks of the Flames blue-collar style of play, Calgary has blocked 688 shots this season, second only to Montreal (725).dddddddddddd Individually, defencemen Kris Russell (105), Chris Butler (100) and Ladislav Smid (83) all rank in the top 10. “I think the guys would jump face first into shots, they have so much commitment to the Flames,” Berra said with a laugh. “They play like a goalie. Sometimes if theres not many shots, its hard to get into the game and Ill be thinking, Hey, let it through, I want to save something too.” Flames coach Bob Hartley has been pleased with how his two goaltenders have improved. “Very happy with their progression,” Hartley said. “Theyre two great guys. They want to learn, they want to contribute to the team success. They get along great together. Were trying to give them streaks where if they play well, we ride them.” Berra started 11 of 12 games in one stretch, starting with a spectacular 42-save win in his NHL debut in Chicago. Lately its been Ramos turn, as he has started eight of the last 12 and is playing his finest hockey of the year. Hes gone 4-2-2 in that span with a 2.06 goals-against average and .925 save percentage. On the season, Ramo is 6-6-3 with a 2.79 GAA and a .904 save percentage. He attended Finlands Olympic orientation in July, but thinks there is little chance hell be in Sochi this February given the countrys depth at the goaltending position. Its unclear if Nashville netminder Pekka Rinne will be ready for the Games as hes still recovering from a hip infection. However, Finland is still loaded with other options, including Bostons Tuukka Rask, San Joses Antti Niemi and Kari Lehtonen of Dallas. “With Finland and the goalies, pretty easy decisions for the people who are selecting,” said Ramo. “Theyve been well known for so long in Finland and played in the NHL for so long and have been so good.” Its a different scenario for Berra. After a strong showing last May at the world championships, he fully expects to be in the mix on the Swiss team. “For sure,” Berra said. “Plus Ive made my next step personally by now playing in the NHL.” The Flames, who sit 11 points out of a playoff spot in the Western Conference, return to action Friday against the visiting Edmonton Oilers. He would receive the full amount for 120 days and 25 starts. The 34-year-old left-hander became a free agent after completing a $137.5 million, six-year contract with the New York Mets, who declined a $25 million option and paid a $5.5 million buyout. Santana, 139-78 with a 3.20 ERA in 12 seasons with Minnesota and the Mets, missed the 2011 season following shoulder surgery on Sept. 14, 2010, returned to pitch the Mets first no-hitter on June 1, 2012, then missed last season after an operation on April 2. The deal announced Tuesday follows Baltimores recent agreements with right-handers Ubaldo Jimenez and Suk-min Yoon, and outfielder Nelson Cruz. “I think its great,” Orioles manager Buck Showalter said before Tuesday nights game against the New York Yankees. “Im not going to say no risk, as far as, Im not the owner, but its another thing that Peter (Angelos) allowed us to do that puts us in position to get kind of lucky. Im not going to say its a no lose proposition. There are things you lose, but it makes a risk worth taking. I think its exciting, the possibility down the road.” Santana is expected to report Wednesday. The Orioles are hopeful that he might be ready to pitch in the majors around June 1. Santana can earn $2.1 million in bonuses based on days on the active 25-man roster: $250,000 for 30, $350,000 for 60, $500,000 for 90 and $1 million for 120. He can make $2.95 million based on starts: $250,000 for five, $350,000 for 10, $500,000 for 15, $750,000 for 20, $150,000 each for 21 and 22, $200,000 apiece for 23 and 24, and $400,000 for 25. He has additional award bonuses for All-Star selection, and winning a Gold Glove and the Comeback Player of the Year and league championship series and World Series MVP awards. Santana would get $100,000 if he is released before March 25. He would be able to opt out of the deal if he isnt added to the major league roster by May 30. Numbers Game looks at the trade in which Prince Fielder and Ian Kinsler swap locales. The Rangers Get: 1B Prince Fielder. Fielder, 29, drove in more than 100 runs for the sixth time in the last seven seasons, but his .819 OPS was the lowest of his career, with his 2.2 fWAR his worst since 2008. From 2006 through 2013, Fielder slugged 283 home runs, ranking fourth, so his power ought to play well in Texas, which is one of the most hitter-friendly environments in the game. Fielder is also exceptionally durable, his 1283 games played since 2006 leading the majors, so he also has durability going for him. The question when it comes to Fielder is going to be in terms of value, particularly in comparison to the financial obligation that the Rangers are taking on by picking up the seven years and $168-million remaining on Fielders contract. Now, theyre not picking up all of it. Initial reports indicate that the Tigers are sending $30-million along to help defray the cost of Fielders contract. Fielder, who rates as a subpar fielder on a consistent basis, will replace Mitch Moreland at first base for the Rangers, with Moreland able to play a corner outfield spot or designated hitter, effectively filling in for the recently-departed David Murphy, who just signed with the Cleveland Indians. Furthermore, and perhaps the primary impetus for this deal from the Texas perspective, is that by dealing Ian Kinsler, the Rangers open up an everyday spot in the lineup for Jurickson Profar, the 20-year-old top prospect who came up through the organization as a shortstop, but played wherever he could fit into the Texas lineup last season and 32 games at second base was his most at any position. Provided he continues to stay reasonably healthy through his mid-30s, Fielder ought to be productive enough to make this deal palatable to the Rangers. If he hits 30 homers a year in the cleanup spot for the Rangers, thats an upgrade in power that the Rangers need. The Tigers Get: 2B Ian p;Kinsler.dddddddddddd Kinsler is a 31-year-old who has been one of the most productive second basemen in the game but, for the first time in his career, his OPS has been under .760 the last two seasons. His 2.5 fWAR last season was his lowest since 2007. Since 2006, Kinsler is one of six players to record at least 150 home runs and 150 stolen bases. The others are Hanley Ramirez, Alex Rios, Matt Kemp, David Wright and Brandon Phillips; good company. While his power has dipped, particularly from the 2009 and 2011 seasons when he hit more than 30 home runs, Kinsler is also showing patience at the plate. His 3.9% rate of swinging strikes ranked seventh-lowest among qualified batters last season, so hes not an easy out. Its fair to expect that it will be more difficult for Kinsler to hit home runs in Detroit, compared to Arlington. Kinsler does figure to be an upgrade over Omar Infante, but the benefit of moving out Fielder is that the Tigers should be able to shift Miguel Cabrera back to first base. Cabreras a great hitter, but a poor fielder and will likely do less damage with the glove playing at first. Over the last couple years, Kinsler has a subpar Ultimate Zone Rating, but his Defensive Runs Saved is among the highest at the position. Since 2009, Kinsler has 59 DRS, ranking second among second basemen. Kinsler has four years and $57-million remaining on his contract (with a $10-million option, $5-million buyout, for 2018). In the total summation, it will cost the Tigers about $92-million for four years of Ian Kinsler and the Rangers will pay about $138-million for seven years of Fielder. Both players should be productive, though declining as their contracts take them to their mid-30s. The benefit to the Tigers is that they create some financial flexibility that will come in handy for signing others, most notably Cy Young winner Max Scherzer, who is slated to become a free agent at the end of the 2014 season. Richard Chere of the Newark Star-Ledger asked Martin Brodeur if he would be surprised if Devils GM Lou Lamoriello approached him about waiving his no-trade clause. The 41-year-old is eligible to become an unrestricted free agent this summer. “No, not at all,” Brodeur told The Star-Ledger on Tuesday. “Its within the teams rights to try and make themselves better. The fact is, I have the luxury to decide what I want to do. I hope if he (Lamoriello) is able to help the team, hell ask, regardless of what it is. Its definitely something that is possible.” So which was it? TVA Sports reported Monday night that Montreal Canadiens general manager Marc Bergevin turned down a trade offer from Colorado that would have seen winger Rene Bourque go the Avalanche and P.A. Parenteau head to the Habs. The networks website adds that negotiations between both teams are ongoing. However, RDS hockey reporter and TSN contributor Francois Gagnon reports it was the other way round – that the Avalanche rejected the offer from the Canadiens. Parenteau, 30, and Bourque, 32, are under contract through the 2015-16 season, with Parenteau carrying a $4 million cap hit and Bourque with a $3.3 million cap hit. Nothing Wild on Miller With rumours of Ryan Miller possibly going to Minnesota, TSN Hockey Insider Bob McKenzie tweeted on Monday that he believes the Wild will stand pat on goaltending until at least the Olympic break. “FWIW, and things can always change, as of now, I dont believe Minnesota is close to any deal with anyone,” he wrote. "Wild may require a goalie if Harding is out long term but with only five games left before the Olympic break, (theyre) likely to ride it out until then to get clearer read on status. "I dont doubt Buffalo intends to trade Ryan Miller, but I dont sense anything is necessarily imminent, even though rumours seem to be rampant. “I hate tweeting something NOT close because landscape shifts quickly – one phone call can do it – and if so, all I can do is look is wrong. But my best information is Minnesota isnt close on anything and Buffalo is working to move Miller but nothing imminent. As of this moment anyway.” Buy Mode in Newark With five weeks remaining before the trade deadline, Rich Chere of NJ.com writes that the Devils are looking for a linemate on the left side for Travis Zajac and Jaromir Jagr and perhaps a veteran defenceman. Kostner, who has won a silver and two bronze medals at the world championships, made up for a close loss at Skate America two weeks ago when American Alissa Czisny beat her by 0.13 points for the title. Kostner won the womens title with 182.14 points. Nagasu ended with 173.22. With the win, Kostner also became the first skater to qualify for the ISU Grand Prix Final next month in Quebec City. Kostner said she was happy with the way shes been skating this year, especially coming after her 16th-place finish at the 2010 Vancouver Olympics. “After Vancouver it was a big question for me if I should just go on skating because it was quite a bad experience and when I took a longer break I just realized that I loved skating,” Kostner said. Nagasu, who trailed Kostner by less than a point after the short program, landed five triple jumps in her performance, putting pressure on the Italian to land her six planned triples. Kostner bobbled the landing of her second jjump, a triple flip, and didnt perform a planned triple-triple combination.ddddddddddddToward the end of the program, she wavered on another landing and singled a double loop at the end of the combination. However, she didnt have any falls in the performance, giving her just enough to beat the American. Kostner said that, since she skated last, the condition of the ice made it difficult for her to nail her landings. “On the landings, it was a little difficult to hold it stable, but you just do the best you can and you have to accept what you get,” she said. Nagasu was pleased that she improved on last years fourth place at the Cup of China. “The relief Im feeling right now is a really nice feeling,” Nagasu said. “When Ive come to China previously I do really well in the short program, like first-place good, and then drop to like fourth place. So to break that curse is such a huge relief to me.” Fifteen-year-old world junior champion Adelina Sotnikova of Russia finished third after an error-plagued program. Téma: Jak postupovat / day or two. The news DETROIT — Gustav Nyquist is making the most of his opportunity to play a lot for the injury-depleted Detroit Red Wings. Nyquist had two goals and Jimmy Howard made 31 saves to help the Red Wings hold on to beat the Toronto Maple Leafs 3-2 on Tuesday night. The 24-year-old Nyquist has 19 goals in 43 games after he had a total of four goals in 40 games spread out over the previous two seasons in the league. Entering the game against Toronto, he was tied with Bostons Jarome Iginla with an NHL-high 12 goals since Jan. 20. “I didnt know that,” Nyquist said. “Im just playing with some good players and Im getting some good bounces.” While Nyquist is being humble about his goal-scoring stretch, teammate Daniel Alfredsson raved about the fellow Swede. “Hes really pesky on the forecheck and hes making a lot of plays,” Alfredsson said. “His speed gives him chances that other players dont get. The second goal was a perfect example.” Early in the third period, Nyquist poked the puck off the boards to himself and charged up the ice early to flick a wrist shot from the right circle that beat James Reimers blocker. That goal seemed to set the Red Wings up for the victory, but they still had work to do. Jake Gardiner scored on a power play midway through the third to pull Toronto within a goal. The Maple Leafs appeared to tie the game less than two minutes later, but Nazem Kardris goal was waved off because he made a kicking motion to knock the puck in with the inside of his right skate. The Red Wings went ahead by two goals again with 2:33 left when Alfredssons wrist shot from the slot hit the back of the net on an odd-man rush that Gardiner lamented. “I thought we were going to come back at the end, but we made a mistake,” Gardiner said. The Maple Leafs pulled Reimer to add an extra skater seconds later and James van Riemsdyk scored with 1:13 left, but couldnt get the puck past Howard again to extend the game past regulation. “Not a lot of space out on the ice,” Toronto coach Randy Carlyle said. Reimer stopped 28 shots for the Maple Leafs. Detroit is desperately trying to move up in the Eastern Conference standings to extend its post-season streak to 23 with a fraction of the team it expected to have this season. Toronto is the first of two wild-card teams in the East, and the Red Wings wouldnt make the playoffs is they started Wednesday. “A huge win for us,” Nyquist said. “Also very important they didnt get a point too and we got two.” The Red Wings lost forward Justin Abdelkader to a leg laceration in Sundays loss at Chicago, leading to the team calling up 22-year-old Landon Ferraro, son of former NHL player Ray Ferraro. “I was a little nervous at the beginning,” Landon Ferraro acknowledged. Ferraro said it was “awesome” to have both his parents watch him play his first game for the Red Wings. “It was real nice for both of them to be able to get in and be here for this,” he said before chatting with his father in the dressing room after the game. Abdelkaders injury also put 25-year-old defenceman Brendan Smith at forward for the first time since he was a teenager against Toronto. The banged-up team, which had won just two of their previous seven games, took another hit against the Maple Leafs. The Red Wings started the game with numerous forwards, including Pavel Datsyuk and Henrik Zetterberg, due to injuries and lost defenceman Jonathan Ericsson because of a broken finger. “We get somebody hurt every day and they never come back,” Detroit coach Mike Babcock said. “I guess hes out for a bit. I dont really know. A hand specialist is looking at him.” NOTES: The Maple Leafs beat the Red Wings in their previous meeting, a 3-2 shootout on New Years Day in the Winter Classic at Michigan Stadium, after losing the first matchup this season 5-4 in a shootout at home. … Abdelkader is expected to be out for two weeks. … Toronto, which closed its road trip 2-3, hosts Tampa Bay on Wednesday. … Detroits next game is Thursday night against the Pittsburgh Penguins. After going 7 1-3 strong innings in the Chicago White Soxs 10-inning 2-1 victory over the Seattle Mariners on Saturday night, Noesi put on a cap that read in front: Revenge NOE. The Mariners were the object of his attention. “When you dont believe in somebody, you need to show them,” said Noesi, who was designated for assignment and eventually traded by Seattle to Texas this spring. The White Sox claimed him April 25 when the Rangers waived him. The White Sox ended their four-game losing streak on Conor Gillaspies RBI single with two outs in the 10th inning. With Jordan Danks on second base, Gordon Beckham reached when Seattle shortstop Chris Taylor booted his grounder. Danks advanced to third and scored when Gillaspie, who entered as a pinch-hitter in the eighth, hit a hard single to right off Fernando Rodney (1-5). “Its one of those tough ones where you dont really know if you should play through it,” Taylor said, “or try to break down and get rid of it quick. I decided to play through and it ended up getting an in-between hop. I should have made the play.” Noesi worked into the eighth to give the Sox the shot at a win. He allowed an unearned run and five hits with four strikeouts and a walk. “This is as good as hes pitched for us,” White Sox manager Robin Ventura said. “He was throwing strikes, getting ahead early. He pitched great. He got us into the eighth.” Noesi said when he arrived in Chicago, pitching coach Don Cooper “told me I can do it. Thats why Im getting better.” It was Cooper who helped put his hat together. “I wear every time I face my former teams,” he said. In four appearaances against Seattle, he had gone 18 1-3 innings, not allowed a run and opponents were hitting .dddddddddddd212 against him. In two seasons with Seattle, he was 2-14 with a 6.13 ERA in 36 appearances. “It was a good game. He pitched good. You have to give him credit,” Mariners second baseman Robinson Cano said. “Really nothing else you can do in that situation. Hes one of those guys that pitches good against us and is good against any team.” The loss ended the Mariners four-game winning streak. Eric Surkamp (1-0) got the last two outs of the ninth for the win and Jake Petricka worked the 10th to pick up his eighth save. James Paxton started for Seattle, his second outing since spending nearly four months on the disabled list with a strained left lat. He went 6 1-3 innings, allowing one run and six hits, striking out four. SWEET LOU ENSHIRNED Before the game, former manager Lou Piniella became the eighth member of the Mariners Hall of Fame. He managed from 1993 to 2002 and guided the club to its only four post-season appearances. Four players in the clubs HOF — Alvin Davis, Edgar Martinez, Jay Buhner and Dan Wilson — were on hand. Piniella gave an emotional 21-minute speech, breaking down to tears twice, once when talking about late broadcaster Dave Niehaus and at the end when thanking the fans for their years of support. “I thank you, salute you,” he closed, “and will never forget you.” TRAINERS ROOM Mariners: Utility player Willie Bloomquist had micro-fracture right knee surgery Friday and will not return this season. He will be on crutches for the next four to six weeks. White Sox: Outfielder Adam Eaton has a strained right oblique that necessitated a trip to the disabled list. Téma: Jak postupovat / url] . Ames was u With the game just past the half hour mark, Stoke winger Jonathan Walters sprinted towards the touchline, failed to keep the ball in play, and had to put his hands out to stop himself from going into the crowd. As he did so he picked up a cup from the fan in the front row and pretended to drink it. Unfortunately for the smiling Englishman the cup was empty. So, it seemed, was the wingers energy. Walters had been asked to play right wing at White Hart Lane in a 4-4-1-1 formation for Stoke, up against a Tottenham team that began in a 4-4-2 shape. His manager, Mark Hughes, had hoped that Walters could get forward to help out his solo front man, Peter Crouch, but instead he was being forced to play right back. One of the fittest players in the league looked exhausted. The reason? The supreme footballing intelligence of Tottenhams Christian Eriksen. Eriksen, asked to play left wing only when the opponents have possession of the ball, terrorized his opponent in possession, with outstanding movement and creativity. The Dane spent much of the match moving inside, the moment the ball drifted to the right side, and forced Stokes back four to get narrower and narrower, forcing Walters deeper. Stoke were bemused by Tottenhams shape and the free role given to Eriksen that hadnt been seen before in a Premier League match. System Much has been made of new head coach Tim Sherwoods tactical changes from previous manager Andre Villas-Boas, with a lot of the focus, rightly so, falling on Sherwoods decision to play two strikers up top together. Villas-Boas took charge of 16 Premier League games this season for Spurs and not once started with two forwards together. Sherwood has picked two up top from the start of every match he has managed so far. When he was questioned about that style after the FA Cup loss to Arsenal, he said: “A lots made of systems – 4-4-2, 4-3-3, whatever you want to call it – but its about passing the ball to your own team, keeping hold of it. Because whenever you lose the ball in transition, youre always going to be out of shape – otherwise youre going to be a rigid, boring team. So its about funnelling back in, shuffling across.” Sherwood has now had seven post-match meetings with the media and the common theme in all of them has been his discussions about getting the ball to key players in key areas. At the top of this list is clearly 21-year-old Eriksen. When the former Ajax playmaker was brought to White Hart Lane at the end of August he was only Tottenhams 4th most expensive signing of the window; behind Erik Lamela, Roberto Soldado and Paulinho. The day he signed, Tottenham also revealed the capture of Argentine Lamela, for almost three times the amount of Eriksen. If Tottenham wanted to keep the Dane under the radar, captured at a discount because his contract was close to expiring, they were certainly doing a good job at it. Eriksen made his debut in Tottenhams fourth game of the season, at home to Norwich, and the team had yet to score a goal from open play. The playmaker took 28 minutes to do what Tottenham couldnt do in 270, putting a perfectly weighted pass in to Gylfi Sigurdsson who opened the scoring. In the second half, Eriksen found himself in his office – the central space outside the penalty box – when he switched the play brilliantly to Paulinho on the right side. It was the kind of pass that most players wouldnt have even seen but seconds later Tottenham extended their lead when Sigurdsson tapped home the Brazilians cross at the back post. When he was taken off after 71 minutes, Eriksen got a standing ovation from his new fans. “It was a great debut for Christian, he is a pure number 10, a creative player and his individual quality made all the difference,” said Villas-Boas after the match.Eriksen would start the next three games but with the side struggling to score goals he found himself on the bench following the October international break. The Dane played just 34 minutes in matches against Aston Villa, Hull and Everton, with Lewis Holtby starting all three games as AVBs pure number ten. Eriksen returned for the home loss against Newcastle and it would be his final appearance for Villas-Boas before he got injured playing for Denmark. When he was fit to return, Tottenham had a date at Southampton and Sherwood was now the boss. Eriksen was back but not as pure number ten, instead, asked to play in a central midfield role in a 442. It was Sherwoods attempt to get the playmaker in the side alongside Soldado and Emmanuel Adebayor, who started his first league game of the season and scored twice in a 3-2 win. It was a brave decision from Sherwood, who at the time was still auditioning for the job. The next day Sherwood was given an 18-month contract in charge of Spurs, four days later they drew 1-1 against West Brom, with Eriksen scoring a free kick, again playing central midfield. The games were coming thick and fast and with little time to work on anything as the head coach reflected after the draw against the Baggies: ""We could have done with a bit more guile around the penalty area, but overall I think well improve, its been difficult because we havent been able to have too much instruction to the boys in training, because of the amount of games, its been hectic, its a new voice, we are asking them to play a slightly different manner and hopefully theyll get better and better at it." Finding the forwards Sherwood needed to find a way for his team to get that guile while still maintaining the shape he was working with them on. Two days after the win against West Brom, he made the slight change over Eriksens positioning for the Stoke game. Tottenhams final game of 2013, with Eriksen in his new role, would turn out to be their best performance of the season as they seemed to solve the biggest problem Tottenham have had this season; getting service to Soldado, a man signed for 26 million pounds in the summer. The Spaniard received just 320 passes in the 13 starts he made under Villas-Boas, an average of just 24.6 per game. Against Stoke, Sherwood specifically asked his forwards to stretch their attack, with Soldado moving out to the right to connect with Aaron Lennon and Adebayor doing the same on the left to connect with Eriksen, with full backs on both wings creating overlaps when they can. Tottenham looked like a completely different side with both forward heavily involved. “The coach has told us to play more free,” Eriksen said afterwards"We have seen that in the games he was been in charge of. He said it looked like we were a little bit afraid (before).“He said we shouldnt be afraid. He said we should just play and see that we are good. If we dare we have a really good team and really good chances.”I think what you see now is how we should play." 2014 Since the turn of the New Year, Sherwood has stuck to his system and Eriksen has been the main reason for its success. At Old Trafford he was the outlet in his own half when Spurs countered, starting the move, sprinting into space on the right and providing a cross for Adebayor to head home. In the second half, for the second goal, Soldado came deep to help with Lennon, who sprinted on and found Eriksen, ahead of both strikers, drifting off the left flank to head home at the back post. On Saturday, at home to Crystal Palace, after a very poor first half from Spurs, Eriksen was the spark they need when he recognized a long cross field ball needed to be played by right back Kyle Naughton towards Adebayor, and the moment the ball came towards the striker, the Dane ran into the space created by his team-mate and smashed home the games first goal. His movement inside from the flank had confused another defence. Eriksen, like Spurs, had not been at his best that day but, at a time when it was needed, had the intelligence and skill required to make the difference. Despite the three points, the performance again raised eyebrows, specifically around Soldado, who was ineffective again despite having more creativity around him. Their remains a number of question marks over Tottenhams new system under Sherwood. Can whoever plays as the central midfield two do enough to cover the gaps in front of the centre backs and combine with the attack, specifically against teams better than Stoke and Crystal Palace? Will Eriksen still be influential in the role if left-sided Mousa Dembele isnt playing in midfield? How much more patience will Sherwood have with Soldado? And will Eriksen remain a left sided option even when others such as Nacer Chadli have come on to replace a striker, like he has in past matches. What should no longer be a question is Eriksens place in the team, no matter where he is asked to play. Sherwoods Tottenham will inevitably go through a difficult patch at some point during the second half of the season but what the versatile Danish star has shown in the last month is that he should be the first name written on the team sheet. Dont expect to see him benched for anyone again. This is a Premier League star in the making. Its tough to argue that point. The 29-year-old Jefferson had a great run five years ago with Minnesota, but that came when the Timberwolves were irrelevant. This year Jefferson is spearheading the Bobcats charge to the playoffs and seemingly getting stronger and more confident with each passing game. “My confidence is up, especially on the defensive end, and Im just playing well,” Jefferson said. “In Minnesota we were 20 games under .500 and we were getting ready for the draft. Right now were in a dogfight. I mean its a dogfight man, and it just means a lot more to me.” Jefferson had 33 points and 10 rebounds on Friday night, helping the Bobcats beat the New Orleans Pelicans 90-87 for their third straight victory since the All-Star break. Jefferson has scored 29 points or more in eight of his last 11 games and at least 20 points in 17 of the last 19. Bobcats coach Steve Clifford said hes never coached a player who has been on a roll quite like the one Jefferson is on now. “Its unbelievable,” Clifford said. “I cant imagine many guys in the league are playing better than him right now.” And Jeffersons production might only increase in the coming months. The Bobcats traded for Gary Neal and Luke Ridnour on Thursday, looking to bolster their 3-point shooting. Jefferson said hes excited about the trade. He believes Neal will bring the Bobcats an outside presence, one that may force teams to think twice about how often they double team him in the low post. “Playing against (Neal) in Utah the last few years, I didnt like him — I didnt like him at all,” Jefferson said. “He didnt miss a lot of shots.” The Bobcats, currently the seventh seed in the East after Atlanta lost to Detroit, overcame some shoddy free throw shooting Friday night in the final minute to win for the seventh time in the last 10 games. Charlotte had missed four of six free throws in the final minute before Kemba Walker knocked down four foul shots in the final 9 seconds to put the Bobcats up by three. The Pelicans had a chance to send the game to overtime, but Josh McRoberts stripped Brian Roberts of the ball att midcourt and time expired.dddddddddddd Rookie Cody Zeller continues to steadily improve, chipping in with a career-high 13 points for the Bobcats. “Defensively Im starting to see plays before they happen and on offence Im playing with more confidence,” said Zeller, the fourth overall pick in the 2013 draft. Roberts had 20 points and Anthony Davis added 18 points and 13 rebounds for the Pelicans (23-31), who have lost four of their last five games. The Bobcats wasted no time exploiting the matchup of Jefferson on Alexis Ajinca, repeatedly dumping the ball in the low post. Jefferson had 14 points in the first quarter. The Pelicans also tried Greg Stiemsma and later Anthony Davis on Jefferson, but nobody had much success stopping him. The trio combined for 13 fouls. Charlotte was 25 of 36 from the foul line; the Pelicans attempted just 11 free throws. “I dont like wearing him down,” Pelicans coach Monty Williams said of the decision not to put Davis on Jefferson to start the game. "So, to put him on Al from the jump, I think it wears him out. We did that with Carmelo (Anthony) the last game and he did a good job and he did a good job on Al tonight. “And Al missed some shots. They got 36 free throws and we got 11. So you figure that out.” The Bobcats defence, which came in ranked fifth in the league in points allowed, limited the Pelicans to a season-low 32 points in the first half to take an 11-point lead at the break. “We couldnt put the ball in the bucket in the first half,” Davis said. “We played great defensively, but its tough to get out of that hole.” There was a comical moment in the fourth quarter after an errant pass. A fan retrieved the ball and fired it back to the official on the court just as Michael Kidd-Gilchrist was getting up from his seat on the bench. The ball hit Kidd-Gilchrist in the back of the head, causing him to flinch. NOTES: Clifford said newly acquired Neal and Ridnour will not play until next week as the NBA has yet to approve the deal. Both arrived in Charlotte on Friday and watched the game from behind the team bench. … Gerald Henderson is one of only eight guards in the NBA that has started every game this season for his team. Téma: Jak postupovat / uzzer. Durant had On Saturday, David Sterns 30-year tenure as the commissioner of the National Basketball Association comes to a close. No man in the modern era has held the top office in one of the ‘Big Four sports longer than Stern and the NBA that we know today was largely molded under Sterns watch and his impact on the league is indelible. TSN basketball analyst Jack Armstrong on the legacy of David Stern: David Stern was a visionary who took the league through many challenges with a firm leadership style. Bringing financial stability, great media coverage, global visibility and incredible promotion of both star players and teams alike were just a few of the ways he was as big an impact player as anybody who wore a uniform. The league was a mess when he took over, but not now. Adam Silver is inheriting a league in terrific shape – an NBA poised to continue to be proactive, decisive and a trendsetter on the pro sports landscape. Stern was the best commissioner the league has ever had and, arguably, the best in pro sports history. He leaves quite a legacy. Lets look back, then, on a generation of basketball under Sterns watch and where its come from and where its headed in large part due to the man calling time on a storied career. Sterns impact on league direction did not begin with his assumption of the commissioners office in 1984, but rather with two key policies enacted while the Columbia law graduate was still the leagues Executive Vice-President: drug testing and revenue-sharing, both of which provided the framework for the two guidelines in place to this day. A lawyer first, Sterns impact on the business side of operations is obvious, both domestically and abroad. Expansion and franchise movement are hallmarks of Sterns NBA. Under the New York City natives guidance, the league has added seven teams in his 30 years (the Charlotte Hornets, Minnesota Timberwolves, Miami Heat, Orlando Magic, Toronto Raptors, Vancouver Grizzlies and Charlotte Bobcats) and relocated six more (the San Diego Clippers headed to Los Angeles, the Kings left Kansas City for Sacramento, the Grizzlies went south to Memphis, the Seattle Supersonics became the Oklahoma City Thunder, the Charlotte Hornets eventually became the New Orleans Pelicans and the New Jersey Nets crossed state lines into Brooklyn). Recognizing the global nature of the game, Stern sought to raise the leagues profile in two key ways. Prior to Stern assuming office, the then Washington Bullets had competed in four games against international competition (one in Israel, two in China and another in the Philippines). These were the only four games that an NBA team had competed in outside of North America. Sensing the international appetite for basketball and the potential to gain exposure abroad, Stern set in motion an initiative that, 30 years later, saw expansion into Canada and games played throughout Europe (Germany, Italy, Switzerland, the then Soviet Union, Spain, Japan, France, Georgia, Russia, Lithuania and Turkey,) Asia (Japan, Taiwan and Macau,) Latin America (Mexico, the Dominican Republic, and Puerto Rico) and the Caribbean (Bahamas). As of Sterns retirement, 147 games, both exhibition and regular season, have been played outside of continental North America. The second prong in Sterns international plan of attack was the deployment of NBA players to international events like the FIBA World Championships and Summer Olympics, starting with the Dream Team with the likes of Michael Jordan, Magic Johnson and Larry Bird running roughshod in Barcelona in 1992. Did Sterns plan work? Well, over his 30-year tenure, players representing 69 different countries have appeared in the NBA, a stunning testament to the games growth and popularity abroad. Stern also moved the NBA into the world of the 24-hour news cycle and took advantage of the burgeoning demand for sports programming on television. Its simply impossible to believe in 2014, but prior to David Stern, the NBA Finals were aired on tape delay. Thats right, tape delay!Stern put an end to that, signing lucrative television deals over the past 30 seasons that have ensured live broadcasts in both national and local markets. Right now, the Association is in the seventh year of an eight-year pact with Turner Sports and ABC/ESPN worth $7.44 billion. Rest assured, competition for the next TV deal will be fierce and the league can expect an even more substantial pact. The impact the TV deal had on the financial health of the league is obvious. According to Forbes, the NBAs 23 teams in 1984 were worth a collective $400 million. In the magazines latest franchise valuations, the average NBA franchise is worth $634 million, up 25 per cent from last year alone and the leagues franchises on the whole are worth an estimated $19 billion. Revenue generated from the 1982-83 season, the last prior to Sterns assumption of control, was $118 million. Last season saw revenue generation of $4.6 billion. The Draft Lottery system is another advent under Sterns reign. Phasing out the archaic system of a coin toss between the leagues bottom-two teams to determine who would select first in the annual NBA Draft, Stern introduced a lottery in 1985 that would see any team who missed out on the postseason have an opportunity at the first overall selection in the draft. The process would undergo revisions over the years, but it became an effective tool to prevent out-and-out tanking by losing teams and would be adopted by Stern acolyte Gary Bettman for use in the NHL. The growth under Stern from a business perspective is absolutely stunning, but Sterns sea change was also felt on the court and the in the locker rooms. When Magic Johnson announced that he was HIV-positive in 1991 and stepping away from the game, Stern stood next to the Los Angeles Lakers superstar on the podium, literally and figuratively. Johnson would return to the league and play again in 1995, as Stern and the rest of the NBA showed a progressive stance when it came to a proper understanding of the transmission of the disease and those living with it. Former journeyman John Amaechi came out in 2007 at the conclusion of his NBA career and Stern asserted that a players sexuality wasnt of importance. "We have a very diverse league,” Stern said at the time. “The question at the NBA is always Have you got game? Thats it, end of inquiry.” He praised Jason Collinss courage when the forward revealed his homosexuality in April of 2013. “As Adam Silver and I said to Jason, we have known the Collins family since Jason and [twin brother] Jarron joined the NBA in 2001 and they have been exemplary members of the NBA family,” Stern said in a statement. “Jason has been a widely respected player and teammate throughout his career and we are proud he has assumed the leadership mantle on this very important issue.” The NBA also showed a progressive ideal that no other professional league did when, in 1997, it became the first major league to employ female officials with the hiring of Violet Palmer and Dee Kantner as referees. From a discipline perspective, Stern has never been one to shy away on tough decisions. In 1995, Dallas Mavericks star Roy Tarpley was permanently banned from the NBA for repeated substance abuse issues. Stern followed suit that same year with Richard Dumas of the Phoenix Suns. The Miami Heats Chris “Birdman” Andersen was out of the NBA from 2006-2008 due to drug violations. Though some argue that Sterns policies could be more lenient, they were praised by one of the more high profile recipients of a ban. Micheal Ray Richardson, a former fourth overall pick of the New York Knicks in 1978, had lengthy and well-documented substance abuse issues and found himself suspended multiple times over the course of his career. In 1986 as a member of the Nets, Richardson was banned for life for three positive tests. Two years later, his suspension was upheld, but Richardson tested positive for cocaine twice in 1991. At the time, the four-time All-Star vehemently disputed his positive results and vocally complained that the league was displaying a double standard in not disciplining Golden State Warriors star Chris Mullin for his battles with alcoholism. As the years have passed, Richardson, who coaches the London Lightning of the National Basketball League of Canada, now credits Stern with helping turn his life around. He and Stern made amends at an exhibition game in Paris in 1997.“I went up to him at halftime just to say no hard feelings,” Richardson told Metro London in November 2013. “He doesnt know it, but he probably saved my life.” Sterns policy of ignoring a players stature when meting out discipline extended beyond drug bans. Bit players and All-Stars alike were brought to NBA justice under Stern. Latrell Sprewell, then of the Warriors, was suspended 68 games in 1997 for throttling then coach PJ Carlesimo. Metta World Peace, then Ron Artest, received a 73-game ban for his part in the infamous November 2004 “Malice at the Palace” brawl in Detroit and three other players were suspended for 25-games-plus. After Gilbert Arenas of the Washington Wizards brought a gun into the locker room in January of 2010, the three-time All-Star was suspended for 50 games. The importance of cultivating a workable minor-league system was also recognized by Stern and implemented through the proper expansion of the National Basketball Development League, now the NBA D-League, in 2005 after its creation in 2001. For the first time, NBA teams, like their NHL and MLB counterparts, had a place where they could develop talent without taking up roster spots and use the D-League to spot talent not under NBA contract. From 2005, players with three years of service or fewer could be assigned to the D-League and in the 2011-2012 season, an agreement was reached that would allow veteran players to be assigned to the league if they chose to consent. The benefits of the D-League for the 30 franchises were obvious, but it also represented a tremendous avenue for passed over players to force teams into giving them another look. Jeremy Lin, JJ Barea and Marcin Gortat are among those who blossomed during their D-League tenures before being recalled to their parent teams, while the likes of Matt Barnes, Will Bynum and Chuck Hayes all earned NBA contracts after successful D-League stints. That same summer of 2005, Stern made another significant policy change when the league and NBAPA agreed that players would no longer be admitted into the league straight from high school. Superstars like Kobe Bryant, Dwight Howard and Tracy McGrady headed into the Association right after high school, but a player would now have to be 19 years of age to play in the NBA. One of the main reasons for this implementation was to encourage players to head to college and pursue an education. Many see this as naïve, referring to it as the “one-and-done rule,” as many players now will declare for the NBA Draft after their freshmen years, but it nonetheless forced an issue that few wanted to talk about. On the court, Sterns watch saw new rules introduced to both improve the game and add to its integrity. The 1998 season brought with it a ban on any sort of forearm and hand-checking anywhere above the free throw line. This allowed for more unobstructed scoring and some of the games more productive players took full advantage. In 2002, instant replay was introduced to determine whether or not shots got off prior to the expiration of game and shot clocks. Its usage was expanded in 2008, when replay could be used to discern if a basket should be worth two or three points. An epidemic in soccer and hockey, Sterns NBA took on flopping in 2012. Though rules were implemented in 1997 to try to curb it, the addition of fines (albeit, monetarily insignificant ones) were meant to add in the shaming of the practice in a further attempt to eliminate it from the game. Obviously, that process is an ongoing one. It would be completely disingenuous to suggest that the Stern commissionership was all sunshine and lollipops, because it certainly wasnt. The NBA experienced times of tumult under Sterns watch, as well. In his 30 years as commissioner, Sterns NBA has seen labour disruption four times. Thats more than any other head of any of the “Big Four” leagues. With lockouts in 1995, 1996, 1998 and 2011, seasons were shortened two of the four times and revenues suffered and acrimony lingered between the league and the NBAPA. While the Draft Lottery was a novel concept, it hasnt been without its controversy, either. To this day, some insist that the 1985 lottery, won by the Knicks who then selected Patrick Ewing with the first overall pick, was rigged in favour of the Knicks as a means to get the leagues biggest television market the best available player. However, it remains a conspiracy theory. Gambling as an issue has arisen on a couple of very prominent occasions on Sterns watch as well. When the Raptors were about to enter the league in 1995, the NBA ordered that gambling on basketball must be removed from Ontarios provincial sports lottery. The league went as far as to suggest that the expansion franchise would be upheld if there wasnt complete compliance. After three months of negotiation, the leagues wishes were adhered to and Pro-Line removed NBA basketball from its games. Fifteen years later, betting on the NBA was reintroduced to that lottery. An even heavier gambling episode occurred with the case of referee Tim Donaghy. In 2007, it was revealed that Donaghy, a 14-year veteran, was under FBI investigation for gambling on games in which he was officiating and his connections to organized crime. Donaghy was arrested and eventually pled guilty to two counts of felony conspiracy and ended up serving 15 months in a federal prison. Though Stern categorized Donaghys actions of those of a “rogue official,” North American sports largest gambling scandal since Pete Rose brought with it aspersions from the media and fans alike over the integrity of leagues officials. Stern brought about tougher background checks on potential referees, but the taint associated with the episode lingered and still does to a lesser extent today. While relocation has brought with it mostly positive results, it, too, has not been without its detractors. Obviously, there is lingering resentment in markets where franchises left, but the New Orleans Pelicans (then, the Hornets) brought a special challenge to the commissioners office when the league assumed ownership of the struggling team in late 2010. The following year, Hornets star guard Chris Paul asked to be traded and in December of 2011, a three-team deal was agreed upon that would have seen Paul move to the Lakers, Pau Gasol head to the Houston Rockets and Lamar Odom to the Hornets. Stern, however, vetoed the trade for what he called “basketball reasons.” The optics here looked bad. Here was the commissioners office intervening in a trade involving a team under league ownership. This appeared to be a blatant conflict of interest on Sterns part and one resulting from pressure from the leagues board of governors to cultivate parity (in not sending another star player to the Lakers,) but Stern stuck to his guns and the deal died. Still, Sterns detractors pale in comparison to the innovation and stability brought to the NBA under Sterns watch. After 30 years, Stern can walk away from his post proud of the forward-thinking and critical leadership he brought to a league that was crying out for somebody to grab the reins and guide. On Saturday, David Stern exits a bigger, better and more entertaining NBA than the one he entered and the teams, players and fans are all better off for it. David Stern was part-maverick, part-entrepreneur and North American sports had seen few like him before. Very likely, they wont again. Durant scored just two of his 26 points in the final 12 minutes and his teammates — including Derek Fisher, Jeremy Lamb and Reggie Jackson — stood in the gap, helping Oklahoma City pull away for a 106-97 win over a Minnesota Timberwolves team without Kevin Love and two other starters. Jackson added 20 points (seven in the fourth quarter) and nine assists for the Thunder, who won for the 12th time in their last 13 games and became the NBAs first team this season to 40 wins. The Thunder won for the ninth straight time at home against Minnesota, which entered the game 3 1/2 games behind Dallas in the race for the eighth and final playoff spot from the Western Conference. The Thunder have won eight straight home games and are 15-1 this season against Western Conference foes at Chesapeake Energy Arena. “We just focus on doing our job every night and living with the results and theyve been pretty good for a while now,” Oklahoma City coach Scott Brooks said. "We have expectations to a standard that we want to play at and I think weve done a good job with that going into the All-Star break. “This is funky time for a lot of teams because a lot of players are probably thinking about the break and what theyre doing, getting their plans together. Weve never been a team that has done that and I dont anticipate that happening this year.” Love, an All-Star forward, sat out with a stiff neck after taking a hard fall Tuesday in a win over the Los Angeles Lakers. Center Nikola Pecovic (ankle injury) and forward Corey Brewer (family leave) also didnt play for the Timberwolves. Minnesota coach Rick Adelman said he was proud of the way his undermanned team fought. “I think it shows that these guys compete,” Adelman said. “They werent afraid to go play them with three starters out. It gave the other guys an opportunity to play. I couldnt be prouder of the way they competed. We just ran a little bit out of gas at the end.” With Minnesota devoting its defensive energies to stopping Durant, other Thunder players made the key plays in the final minutes. The score was tied in the closing seconds of the third quarter when Fisher attempted a 3-pointer from the corner that appeared to be long, but Minnesotas Gorgui Dieng accidentally tapped it into the basket to give the Thunder an 80-77 lead. Fisher finished with 13 points, his second-best offensive outing of the season. “Ive never seen that before,” Durant said of the goaltending call on Dieng. “That guy is a rookie . so Im sure hes going to learn from that one. BBut that gave us a boost and at the start of the fourth those guys came out and played extremely hard and thats what we needed.dddddddddddd” Lamb opened the fourth quarter with another 3-pointer to push Oklahoma Citys lead to six points. The Thunder finished off the 16-4 run with a dunk by Lamb with 7:17 left that made it 93-81, but Oklahoma City suddenly went cold from the field. Durant was called for a technical foul with 4:39 left after protesting a no-call, but Ricky Rubio missed the ensuing free throw, leaving the score at 93-86. Minnesota pulled within 95-89 after a 3-pointer by Robbie Hummel with 3:45 left, but the Timberwolves came no closer. “We came into the game aggressive and we fought all the way through, but in the last five minutes, I think we missed too many free throws and easy shots while they made shots at the end,” said Rubio, who had 19 points, eight rebounds and five assists. Thabo Sefolosha, who missed his first seven 3-point attempts, made one from the corner with 1:43 left to extend the Thunders lead to 100-90 and Minnesota came no closer than nine points the rest of the way. “Theyre NBA players, too,” Durant said of his teammates. “Its not like Ive been scoring every point in the fourth. We play off each other. Guys hit big shots and we got stops. . We play a team game here.” Durant, who also had nine rebounds and seven assists, continued his strong play against the Timberwolves. Téma: Jak postupovat / personal g HOUSTON — Kevin McHale preaches consistency. So far his young Rockets team hasnt heeded his words and is coming off two straight losses to the Grizzlies. McHale knows Houston, despite a 29-17 record, must play better. Coming up on Tuesday night are the Southwest Division-leading San Antonio Spurs. When asked how his team can be more consistent, McHale shared several ideas. “Weve got to be better against a lot of different styles of basketball,” he said. “Weve got to know what our strengths and weaknesses are and play to our strengths. Weve got to be way more tied together and diligent about all the little things. We worry too much about all the big things. But weve got to do all the little things and that leads to big things.” The Rockets have won both previous meetings with the Spurs this season. McHale doesnt expect that success to factor into Tuesdays game, especially with San Antonio coming off a tough loss to the Heat. “Its going to be a tough game,” McHale said. “The first two games dont make any difference. Were a different team. Theyre a different team. Weve got to play really well. That team lost to Miami, theyre going to come in hungry.” Dwight Howard is still upset about how Houston played against Memphis, but believes rough spots like this will help the Rockets in the long run. “These are growing pains,” Howard said. “Losing those games and trying to learn from experience on how to play is good for our team. We hate to lose and we were all (ticked) off about the last two games, but it was some things that we learned and picked up from playing against a team like Memphis and well get better.” The 28-year-old Howard knows that a team as young as the Rockets is going to have many ups and downs throughout the season. But he thinks the lessons they learn now will be the difference when they get to the playoffs. “We cant look at anything in a negative way,” he said. “We have to stay positive and understand that everything comes with time. Weve still got to play hard and go out there and be aggressive but also understand that were a great team in progress. It doesnt happen overnight.” James Harden, who leads the team in scoring with almost 24 points a game, has struggled offensively in the last two games, averaging just 13. He hasnt had any of those struggles against San Antonio since joining the Rockets before last season and has averaged 30 points a game against the Spurs. He isnt sure why hes played so well against the Spurs. “Im just happy to go out there and do my job,” Harden said. “Whether its the Spurs or the Memphis Grizzlies or the Thunder or the Lakers or whoever, every game is important to me and I just try to go out there and do my best.” Harden believes the Rockets have had trouble with consistency because of various injuries that have forced them to change their starting lineup almost every night. “Whatever guys are out there were trying to get it going,” he said. “Its kind of hard to get a rhythm and kind of get a feel for where guys like to be at because every other game its a different lineup. So we just work with it.” Along with Harden getting back on track, the Rockets are also focused on being aggressive inside and looking to score there first. The Rockets lead the NBA in points in the paint, but were outscored 104-62 in that area in the last two games. “We just shot long shot after long shot and never got the ball in the paint,” McHale said. “When were getting in the paint, good things happen.” . Almost half the team was excused from the first practice of this seasons bye week as Allen gave almost all of the teams veterans and injured players time away from the field. After the team held morning meetings, the veterans got some rest and treatment while the younger players held a short practice to tune up the passing game and clean up some mistakes. Thats a contrast to last years approach, when Oakland held mostly full practices during its week off in Allens first year as coach. “I just felt like with where were at as a football team, especially with the health of the football team, that I thought it was important for the veteran players to get some time to really take care of their bodies and get themselves back healthy and ready to go for next week,” Allen said Tuesday. The Raiders (2-4) are riddled with injuries and were forced to cobble together a makeshift offensive line in Sundays 24-7 loss at Kansas City. Guard Mike Brisiel was forced to play at centre after backup Andre Gurode left the game with an injury with starter Stefen Wisniewski already hurt. That gave rookie Lamar Mady his first offensive action as a pro at right guard. Matt McCants, who played only a handful of snaps before starting against San Diego on Oct. 6, was forced back into action at right tackle after Tony Pashos got hurt. The Raiders have already had to move Khalif Barnes from right tackle to left tackle because of injuries to Jared Veldheer and Menelik Watson, and Lucas Nix made just his fourth career start at left guard. Running backs Darren McFadden and Rashad Jennings allso are nursing hamstring injuries, putting the bye week at a most opportune time.dddddddddddd “Its very important,” receiver Rod Streater said. “I think its going to help get some linemen back. Just any nicks and bruises we have the week off will help us out.” That led Allen to make the decision to keep his veterans out of practice as only 36 of the 61 players on the active roster and practice squad took part in the abbreviated workout. That included all the quarterbacks, receivers and tight ends, leading to a heavy emphasis on the passing game. Most of the time was spent in 7-on-7 passing drills with linemen doing individual work on the side. “Weve got a lot of guys that are banged-up, a lot of the veteran guys,” Allen said. “We need those guys to get their bodies back, get their minds back. Well give them a little bit of time, but were still bringing them in, still meeting with them and spending a lot of time in the training room.” The other focus this week is mental as a young Raiders team tries to learn how to win games. Oakland has been in position to win five of the six games this season with the only blowout coming in Week 3 in Denver. The Raiders faltered late in losses to Washington and Kansas City as they made too many key mistakes at the most inopportune times. “Weve given ourselves opportunities to win games. Weve got to continue to put ourselves in those types of positions,” Allen said. “The more we do that, the more experience we get with that, the better were going to react to those situations and well begin to win some of these games and come out on the plus side instead of having to come back and make some adjustments after tough losses.” cheap nfl jerseys wholesale jerseys ’ ’ ’ |

Téma: Jak postupovat / points, the Hoosiers might h SEATTLE – Felix Hernandez just wanted to throw a first-pitch strike. Turned out to be exactly what Jose Reyes was looking for and started Seattles ace toward his first loss since late May. “A lot of it was I fell behind since the beginning,” Hernandez said. “A leadoff homer; that was a tough game.” Reyes homered on the first pitch of the game, added an RBI single to cap Torontos big fourth inning, and the Blue Jays handed Hernandez his first loss since May 25 with a 7-2 win over the Mariners on Tuesday. The Blue Jays battered Hernandez (11-5) and knocked him out after just five innings, matching his shortest start of the season. Hernandez was not sharp and when he missed, the Blue Jays took advantage. “He wasnt getting a whole lot off the corners. It was a pretty tight strike zone,” Seattle acting manager Robby Thompson said. “When he missed, it was out over the plate and he was hit.” Hernandez remained stuck on 11 wins. In his previous two starts, he was burned by the inability of Seattles bullpen to hold a lead and get Hernandez his 12th victory. On Tuesday, Hernandez was at fault early, giving up a homer to Reyes, but Seattles defence did him no favours. The Mariners committed three errors that led to three unearned runs while Hernandez was on the mound. Despite lasting just five innings, Hernandezs ERA only rose from 2.30 to 2.39. Hernandez had not lost since May 25, a span of 12 starts. Hernandez didnt want to put any of the blame on the errors made behind him. “Its part of the game. I made a couple of mistakes, fell behind a lot,” Hernandez said. “They capitalized and scored some runs.” Josh Johnson (2-8) pitched well with his potential spot in the rotation at stake. Johnson threw five scoreless innings and won for the first time since June 23, snapping a six-game losing streak. Reyes brought the huge contingent of Blue Jays fans to their feet from the start. He lined Hernandezs first fastball of the night 399 feet into the seats in right for his eighth homer of the season. It was Reyes 18th career leadoff homer and first this season. For Hernandez, it was just the second leadoff homer allowed in his career and a precursor to a tough night. “Hes one of the best pitchers in the game,” Reyes said. “I had that approach before the game I was looking for a fastball right in the middle the first pitch and I try to put my best swing and thats what happened.” Toronto scored three times in the fourth helped by two Seattle errors. Emilio Bonifacio had the big hit with a two-out double into the gap in right-centre field. Bonifacios hit came after three defensive breakdowns by Seattle: Kyle Seager committed his second error of the night, shortstop Brad Miller threw wildly to second trying to start a double play and Miller failed to hold the ball when tagging Brett Lawrie on a stolen base. Reyes followed Bonifacio with an RBI single to cap the big inning. Toronto then scored twice more in the fifth when Colby Rasmus dropped an RBI single on a two-out, 0-2 pitch from Hernandez. That was followed by Lawries RBI single and a 6-0 lead. “Anytime you give these offensive minded clubs — the Red Sox, Baltimore and these guys here — extra outs, its not a good thing,” Thompson said. “It made Felix work a little harder and his pitch count got up.” Seattles ugly night defensively was capped in the seventh when Raul Ibanez committed the Mariners fourth error spiking an attempted throw from left field into the ground just a few feet in front of him and allowing Jose Bautista to score Torontos seventh run. Torontos offensive output made it an easy night for Johnson, who in his previous four starts had an ERA of 14.06, but was masterful against the Mariners. After getting out of a jam in the first, Seattle never got a runner to third base until the seventh on Millers two-run triple. “Hes got a lively fastball, good (sinker) and he was mixing in the curve ball and we were just chasing it,” Miller said. “Personally, I chased a couple. Just a good mix. Then they brought in their bullpen and we just couldnt get anything going.” Notes: Rasmus made a highlight catch robbing Morales of a potential home run in the sixth inning pulling in a deep drive to centre field. … Seattle optioned closer Tom Wilhelmsen to Triple-A Tacoma on Tuesday in the hopes he can rediscover the command of his fastball. Seattle recalled reliever Carter Capps to take Wilhelmsens spot. Seattle also released OF Jason Bay, who was designated for assignment on July 29. … Texas Ian Kinsler is the only other batter to hit a leadoff homer off Hernandez. … The four errors by Seattle were its most since committing six vs. the Angels in September 2011. The sophomore is still trying to find his way back from an ankle injury thats kept him out of the lineup three times this season and Izzo said he isnt fit or on top of his game. “I swear hes not what hes going to be,” Izzo said. Tell that to Indiana. Harris scored 26 points, including 17 in the first half, to lead No. 5 Michigan State to a 73-56 victory over the Hoosiers on Saturday. Harris played 37 minutes for the Spartans (13-1, 2-0 Big Ten), spending most of them picking apart Indiana (10-5, 0-2). “Once we see some shots go down early, it can be a long day for the other team,” Harris said, conceding that Izzo may be right about his fitness. “I was dead tired at the end of the game.” Hoosiers coach Tom Crean, who said his team fell to a potential national champion, called Harris lethal and efficient. “Gary was an assassin today,” Crean said. The win ended a run of three straight Indiana wins over the Spartans. Michigan State turned 13 Indiana turnovers into 20 points — with Harris the finisher on several of the plays — capitalizing on a problem that has plagued the Hoosiers all season. They are averaging 16.4 turnovers a game, more than any other team in the conference. Branden Dawson added 13 points for the Spartans. Yogi Ferrell led Indiana with 17 points while Will Sheehey added 13. After falling behind by as many as 15 points early in the second half the Hoosiers made a run, using freshman guard Stanford Robinson to clamp down on Harris and finding points from someone other than Ferrell. “I wish we would have got him on Harris in the first half,” Crean said of Robinson. Sheehey buried a 3-pointer with 8:54 left in the game to close the gap to 50-41, turning and sprrinting back down court as the shot went through and the crowd erupted.dddddddddddd. But at the other end of the court, Indiana couldnt come up with a rebound off a series of Spartan misses, finally watching Harris come back to life for what would become a 5-point play. Harris hit a 3-pointer and drew a foul from Robinson. And as Harris pumped his first in front of the celebrating Spartans bench, Robinson was hit with a technical foul. Harris made two of the three free throws and the Spartans were up 55-41. Without Ferrells 10 first-half points, the Hoosiers might have been all but out of the game by halftime. Michigan State turned Indianas eight turnovers into 13 first-half points and a 33-24 lead. The Hoosiers had no answer for Harris, not even Ferrell. Harris had 17 points by the half, including a 3-pointer with 45 seconds left that he hit over Ferrell, who fell as he scrambled to get to him and was sprawled on the court at his feet. Indiana went up 9-5 in the opening 4 minutes on a 3-pointer by Ferrell. But the Spartans shut down the Hoosiers momentum in a hurry, going on a 10-0 run that was capped by a layup and free throw from Harris with 11:35 left. Harris entered the game averaging a team-high 17.4 points a game. But he still hasnt been the player he or Izzo expected this season. So he spent part of the morning, he and Izzo said, watching video of his play from last season and said it helped. Now Izzo, who said he apologized to Harris for leaving him on the court too long, hopes he can build on this game. “Youve got to have guys who make plays,” Izzo said. “I think Gary Harris is going to be that guy for us this year.” Michigan State is 7-0 on the road this season but plays its next two games, against No. 3 Ohio State on Tuesday and Minnesota on Jan. 11, at home. The Hoosiers will try for their first Big Ten win at Penn State on Jan. 11. Téma: Jak postupovat / ints and 8.8 rebounds while leading After the 9-8 win in Philadelphia Thursday, the Winnipeg Jets players all agreed they had to be better defensively, and felt they would be in the very next game. Coaches hoped the nine goals for would help some players get more confident with the offensive side of the game. Saturday night in Tampa may have been the Jets best game of the season. They created enough to win, defended well enough to win, got outstanding goaltending from Ondrej Pavelec, but in the end the result they wanted was not there. Vinny Lecavaliers power play goal late in the 2nd was the only goal as the Jets are now 1-1 on their road trip. Playing the Lightning can be frustrating. They play a patient 1-3-1 system and gaining the zone is not easy. “We discussed how to be effective but in the future our puck retrieval will have to be better. If you dont retrieve the dump in, you end up chasing,” was Coach Claude Noels post game assessment. “The guys gave it their but you have to find a way to grind one through.” Dwayne Roloson was very good especially in the third when the Jets outshot the Lightning 11-3. Final shots were 28-27 Jets. In a post game interview with Brian Munz on TSN 1290 Pavelec felt the team played well, especially in the third. “Crazy game. You give up 8 and win, then give up 1 and lose.” “We just couldnt get established in their zone,” added Blake Wheeler in his post game interview on TSN 1290. “Most of our chances came off the rush. We paid a lot more attention in our own end. Moving the puck d to d gave our guys some time and space. But they are a frustrating team to play against.” Wheeler and Brian Little continue to search for their first goal of the season. Each had only two shots on goal, but did a lot of good things in the game. Little took 31 face-offs winning 16. Even with 4.6 seconds left he won a faceoff and the Jets created two more chances as time ran out. Alexander Burmistrov had his point streak snapped at 6. Monday the trip continues against the Florida Panthers (TSN Jets, TSN 1290). Panthers scored two in the final 3 minutes in Buffalo Saturday for a come from behind 3-2 win. Now the veteran mixed martial arts fighter is getting his own reality TV show. The K.F. Dischley Group, a New York-based film and TV production company, has signed the former UFC fighter to star in a 13-episode series called “Crowtime.” Production is set to start in the spring, with the series scheduled to debut in the fall. Loiseau, 32, says the show is about the daily life of an MMA fighter, inside and outside the gym. “The interaction with fans, family, friends, teammates, other professional fighters, promoters,” he said Wednesday. “Its just going to be the real life of a fighter.” Lee Andrew Myers, CEO and chairman of the Dischley Group, cited Loiseaus “personality and can-do spirit” as well as his background in choosing the Canadian. “When you look at his past story and the adversity he had to overcome when he was younger to become who he is, thats the other aspect,” Myers said. “People are going to be drawn to him because he has such an incredible spirit,” he added. Away from the cage, Loiseau is a big teddy bear of a man — a six-foot slab of muscle with an infectious smile. But the former UFC veteran has not always been able to use all his skills to their fullest. Still his flashy kicks and moves have lived on in UFC highlight reels, even while the fighter himself looked on from outside the organization. His spectacular spinning back kick and flying knee finish against Charles (Chainsaw) McCarthy at UFC 53 in June 2005 was immortalized in a highlight reel to the sounds of The Whos “Baba ORiley” before UFC pay-per-views. Loiseau (20-10) is a survivor. As a teenager, he fractured two discs in his back in a car accident. He is also determined. He learned basic English growing up in Quebec, but wanted it to be perfect. So one summer, as a 17-year-old, he took a job as a councillor at an English camp, forcing himself to learn the language. He is considered an MMA pioneer in Quebec, making his pro debut in 2000 and entering the UFC in April 2003 when he knocked out Mark Weir at UFC 42. UFC welterweight champion Georges St-Pierre, also featured in “The Striking Truth,” says Loiseau is “like a big brother.” Loiseau fought for the UFCs 185-pound title in March 2006, losing a punishing five-round battle to middleweight champion Rich (Ace) Franklin.dddddddddddd. Franklin had his hand raised but at a cost. He subsequently needed surgery to insert seven screws and a plate in his hand. He also suffered a hairline fracture in his foot and had ligament damage in his left ankle and right knuckle. Not to mention five stitches over his left eye. Loiseau looked like Franklin had taken a baseball bat to his head. There were no broken bones — and only a few stitches — but it took a week for the facial swelling to subside. Loiseau returned to the cage before Franklin did. He was released and recalled by the UFC several times, with “The Striking Truth” documenting Loiseaus last go-round with the organization. He lost by TKO to Mario Miranda at UFC 115 in Vancouver in June 2010, with director Steven Wongs film poignantly showing Loiseaus confusion and pain afterwards as he contemplated his fighting future while on a hospital gurney. Loiseau calls himself an entrepreneur as well as an athlete — “The Striking Truth” was his idea. “Theres a lot more to my story than you saw in The Striking Truth and what you see on Wikipedia when you type my name,” Loiseau said. After the Vancouver loss, Loiseau returned to win the Tachi Palace Fights championship in February 2011, defeating Leopoldo Serao. An August title defence was derailed by a knee injury suffered in the gym. Loiseau has yet to resume full training but hopes to fight this summer. The fighter came to the attention of the Dischley Group through Ron Chevalier, an executive producer who met him while commodity trading. The two became friends and Chevalier pitched the reality show idea to Myers. “I knew David had a lot going for him as far as his background, his drive, his personal ambition,” Chevalier said. Loiseau expects that making the reality TV show will be more “intense” than the documentary movie, which followed he and GSP in spurts. “But Ive been fighting for 12 years, so Im no stranger to cameras.” The four-to six-man production crew will follow him for six to eight weeks — in Montreal and elsewhere as he travels in search of different training challenges. Other Dischley Group projects include a bio-pic of Lou Pearlman, an inside look at the former manager of NSync and Backstreet Boys. Téma: Jak postupovat / a goal by the Flyers. Pu ATLANTA — Gavin Floyd was impressive in his first start in a year, giving the Braves a chance to end their longest losing streak in two years. Justin Upton homered and scored the tiebreaking run on Chris Johnsons eighth-inning single, and the Atlanta Braves beat the St. Louis Cardinals 2-1 on Tuesday night to end their seven-game skid. “That felt good,” Johnson said. “Its big. We werent panicking too much. We were relaxed, even though we lost seven in a row.” Floyd allowed one run on six hits in seven innings. He made his first major league start since April 27, 2013, for the White Sox against Tampa Bay. He had season-ending Tommy John surgery 10 days later, and his comeback included six minor league rehab starts this year. “It felt good,” Floyd said. “There were a lot of emotions, a lot of excitement through this process leading up to it and getting back out there … not only starting for the first time but trying to get us back on the winning side.” Braves manager Fredi Gonzalez had modest expectations for Floyds return. “I didnt expect that really,” Gonzalez said. "I expected a guy who was going to scuffle through five, six innings for the first time out. He hadnt been in competition in a year but he sure came out with flying colours. You couldnt ask for anything more. “He was really, really good for the first time in a year.” David Carpenter (2-0) had two strikeouts in the eighth. Craig Kimbrel added two more strikeouts in a perfect ninth for his ninth save. With one out in the eighth, Upton singled to centre. Freddie Freeman followed with a liner that bounced off the leg of Randy Choate (0-1) and bounced to third baseman Matt Carpenter for an infield hit. Right-hander Pat Neshek gave up Johnsons single to right field that drove in Upton and allowed Freeman to advance to third. Johnson called the at-bat against Nesheks side-arm delivery “a grind.” “It wasnt easy,” Johnson said. “That guy is funky. Hes nasty. … That was just a battle between me and him and me trying to get something in play. I was able to finally stay on the ball and kind of go the other way a little bit.” Choate was left to bemoan Freemans shot that hit his leg, setting up Johnsons run-scoring hit. “If it misses me its a groundball to (shortstop) Jhonny (Peralta), probably a double play,” Choate said. “I didnt feel it. I didnt even see it. It just somehow found me and ricochets off me. Thats the way it bounces sometimes and it stinks but what are you going to do?” St. Louis left-hander Tyler Lyons allowed only one run on four hits, including Uptons homer, in six innings. “Great start,” said Cardinals manager Mike Matheny. “Its a shame we havent been able to score that guy any runs. … He had everything working today.” Lyons retired the first 10 Braves before Upton snapped a 0-for-12 streak with his team-leading ninth homer in the fourth. The Cardinals tied it in the sixth. Matt Hollidays single to right-centre drove in Carpenter, who led off with a walk. Floyd made the start originally planned for Ervin Santana, whose spot was skipped due to his swollen right thumb. Santana is listed as the probable starter against the Cubs on Saturday. Gonzalez stayed with the structure of the revamped lineup he unveiled on Monday in an attempt to snap the losing streak and hitting slump. For the second straight game, shortstop Andrelton Simmons hit ninth, one spot behind the pitcher. NOTES: Atlantas last win was a 1-0 decision in 10 innings over the Reds on April 27. … The losing streak was the Braves longest since eight straight losses from May 21-28, 2012. … Matheny said 2B Mark Ellis was held out for a normal day of rest. Daniel Descalso filled in. … The series ends on Wednesday night when Braves LHP Mike Minor looks for his first win of 2014 against Cardinals ace Adam Wainwright. … A scoring change gave Floyd an infield single on his grounder in the fifth originally ruled as an error on Carpenter. Téma: Jak postupovat / illies again. - I dont know if this (SportsNetwork.com) – The Pittsburgh Penguins will try to complete a sweep of the Washington Capitals when the clubs cap a quick home-and-home series Tuesday night in the Steel City. Catch the action live on TSN2 at 7:30pm et/4:30pm pt. Pittsburgh visited the Capitals on Monday and Chris Kunitz potted a pair of goals, including the go-ahead marker in the second period, to help the Penguins continue their recent dominance of Washington with a 3-2 victory at Verizon Center. Sidney Crosby assisted on both of Kunitzs scores and tallied one of his own in Pittsburghs seventh consecutive win over the Capitals, while Jeff Zatkoff outperformed counterpart Jaroslav Halak with a 31-save performance between the pipes. “At the end of it, the goalie has to make the big save and we had that all night,” said Penguins defenseman Rob Scuderi of Zatkoff. Halak, making his second start for Washington since being acquired from Buffalo at last weeks trade deadline, stopped just 17-of-20 shots. Eric Fehr and Nicklas Backstrom accounted for Washingtons goals in the loss, the Capitals fourth in five games. “I think we have to look at the positives,” Fehr said after Mondays game. “We had some time where we outplayed them and we have to try to do that again tomorrow.” Pittsburgh pushed its lead atop the Metropolitan Division to 16 points over the New York Rangers. The Capitals, meanwhile, enter Tuesday one point behind both Columbus and Detroit for the final playoff spot in the Eastern Conference. The Blue Jackets and Red Wings are facing each other tonight in Columbus. Washington twice rallied from one-goal deficits to knot the score at 2-2 midway through the second period on Monday, but Kunitz struck for the second time of the night with 7:20 left in the middle session to put the Penguins in front to stay. The goal came on a rush up the ice led by Crosby, who dropped the puck back to Lee Stempniak for a shot that Halak kicked away. Kunitz raced in down the left side while uncovered, however, to deposit the rebound into an opening. Zatkoff made the lead stand with a seven-save third period. Washington had an opportunity to tie after the Penguins were called for too many men on the ice with 2:17 left, but never got a shot on goal during the advantage. “I thought we did a good job just sitting back and not giving them passing lanes and making them shoot themselves,” said Scuderi. “Its way easier for the defense and goalie if you can just keep the puck on one half of the ice and not have to be going side-to-side. I guess I thought everyone did a good job with that.” The Pens own a stellar 23-4-2 record on home ice this season, but have lost two straight at CONSOL Energy Center. Washington has lost two straight on the road and is just 12-15-5 as the away team in 2013-14. . .com) – There was clearly no looking ahead for the U.There is a fine line in sports betweeen age-old experience and just plain old age. Generalyl speaking in sports, getting older equates to more injuries and greater recovery time from said injuries. Yet the past two seasons, it was largely the younger pitchers of the Toronto Blue Jays, Kyle Drabek, Drew Hutchison and Brandon Morrow who were injured and, last year in particular, veterans R.A. Dickey and Mark Buehrle who pitched the most innings. I dont know if it should concern the Blue Jays or not at this point, but the two youngest and most economical rotations in their division belong to the Tampa Bay Rays and Baltimore Orioles. With the Rays rotation as is right now with Jeremy Hellickson recuperating from an injury, David Price, Matt Moore, Alex Cobb, Chris Archer and Jake Odorizzi, the likely fifth starter to start the season, have a cumulative age of 124. If Hellickson eventully supplants Odorizzi, the number will move up to 127 years. Without Hellickson, they will be spending a little over $16.4 million in total on their five-man rotation and $19.6 million when he returns. Not bad at all for a team that has been a post-season contender since 2008 and not one of those pitchers is above 28 years of age. The Orioles made the post-season two years ago and came fairly close again last season. Their projected rotation is slightly older and a bit more expensive than the Rays. The total age of their top-five starters will be 139 or 140, depending on whether Bud Norris or recently signed Korean right hander Suk-Min Yoon slots into the rotation. If Norris is in the rotation, the cash layout is about $20 million. If it is Lee it drops off a bit to $17 million and change. The oldest pitcher in the Os rotation is recent signing Ubaldo Jimenez at 30. The Jays and Boston Red Sox have the most 30-or-over starters at three apiece. Bostons highest paid starter is also their oldest in John Lackey, whos 35 and will be making $15.25 million this season. The BoSox will be paying just over $50 million to their top-five starters. If Ricky Romero somehow earns the fifth starters job, every one of the Jays starters will be 29 or over and their cumulative age will be 162. Thats an average age 32.2 and speaks to how the Blue Jays havent done as good a job at developing young pitchers, like the St. Louis Cardinals have, and how their prospects have either been set back by injuries or have been traded. If Esmil Rogers or Todd Redmond fills the five-slot, the age of the Jays pitchers will still total 161, good for the oldest in the division with Bostons starting five totaling 152 years of age or 30.4 on average. The Jays pay for their starting pitchers if Romero iis in the rotation will be $50.dddddddddddd7 million, virtually the same as the Red Sox. Mark Buehrle will be making the most at $18 million, more than any Boston starter. If Romero isnt in the rotation, the payout for starters will be about $44 million. The Yankees, as usual, are in a class all their own. They will be paying out $77.8 million to their five starters, including about $23 million each to C.C. Sabathia and rookie Masahiro Tanaka. If Michael Pineda doesnt rebound after missing two years with shoulder troubles, they might have to add another veteran starter who would push their cash outlay even higher. Even with 39-year-old Hiroki Kuroda in their rotation, the total age of the Yanks current top five is 149 years or an average of 29.8 years old. What all this means is hard to say. After all, talent is talent at any age. But Tampa Bays average age of 24.8 for its staff, just sounds a lot better than the Jays average age of 32.2 and the Rays record since 2008 speaks for itself. – Did I miss something here? Roy Halladay signs a one-day contract with the Blue Jays over the off season, so he could retire officially as a member of his original ball club. There was all kinds of talk about him joining the organization, at least initially as a spring training guest instructor, with the role growing as the years progressed. Then, over the weekend, Halladay shows up at the Philadelphia Phillies camp as a guest instructor. Did the Blue Jays fumble the ball or did Halladay simply feel he owed something to the Phils for his years with that club? It makes sense in one regard. Roy would certainly know more about the Phils up and coming young pitchers than he would about the Jays at this point and, perhaps, felt he could contribute more there. Still, it would be a shame, if, somehow, the Blue Jays have lost Roy Halladay to the Phillies again. – I dont know if this means the wall blocking PED users from making the Hall of Fame is beginning to crumble, but relations are at least beginning to thaw. First, the Red Sox announced Roger Clemens would be inducted into the Red Sox Hall of Fame this summer and now Barry Bonds is at the San Francisco Giants camp as a special guest hitting instructor. Two of the most villified PED users are now being welcomed back into the fold. Then over the weekend, ESPNs Buster Olney, one of the great clean-up hitters in the baseball media whose opinion carries a lot of weight, wrote an article on the “incongruity” of Barry Bonds not being in Cooperstown. It may take some time, but clearly, the movement has begun to include all of baseballs greatest stars in the Hall of Fame, no matter their sins against the fans and the game. Téma: Jak postupovat / u Ginobili and Tony Park SAN ANTONIO — No cramps, no problems for LeBron James. And with their superstar making it to the finish this time, the Miami Heat bounced back from a loss, just as they always do in the playoffs. “Obviously, having No. 6 in the game at the end was a plus for us,” Dwyane Wade said. James had 35 points and 10 rebounds in a powerful comeback from the cramps that knocked him out of the opener, as the Heat tied the NBA Finals with a 98-96 victory over the San Antonio Spurs in Game 2 Sunday night. Chris Bosh made the go-ahead 3-pointer on a pass from James with 1:18 remaining for the Heat, who have won 13 straight following a loss in the post-season. Just like last year, they rebounded after losing Game 1 to the Spurs. Bosh had 18 points for the Heat, who are headed home for Game 3 Tuesday night. James played more than 37 minutes, making 14 of 22 shots. He was 1 for 4 with three turnovers in a shaky first quarter, then made 11 of his next 13. After two days of enduring criticism for not finishing the game and getting suggestions on how to avoid cramps, James changed the subject. “What happened on Thursday was Thursday,” James said. “My whole focus was how I was going to try to help this team even this up and just try to make some plays.” He had a key strip of Tony Parker down the stretch, playing a dominant game on both ends as if he had something to prove. As usual, James found a way to silence his haters. He had 11 points in the second quarter, helping Miami erase an 11-point deficit early in the period. The game was played within a margin of a few points from there, and the Spurs missed a chance to seize control in the fourth quarter when Parker and Tim Duncan missed four straight free throws when they had a two-point lead. James then made a 3-pointer and two free throws to put Miami in position to win. Parker scored 21 points and Duncan had 18 points and 15 rebounds for the Spurs, who had won eight straight at home by at least 15 points. “Down the end there they executed really well,” Duncan said. “LeBron made some great passes and guys made open shots. We had the same result in the first game. They kind of flipped it in this one.” The game was played in comfortable conditions inside the AT&T Center, where an air conditioning failure in Game 1 sent temperatures soaring to about 90 degrees. The broken circuit breaker was fixed by Friday afternoon, and it was much cooler inside the arena. James had the toughest time with the heat Thursday, needing treatment midway through the fourth quarter before eventually having to leave for good. He had plenty of time to recover, with the two days off between Games 1 and 2. He changed only a little of his routine, taking an 8 a.m. yoga class Sunday morning and switching to a shorter pair of tights. He personally erased a 62-56 San Antonio lead by scoring eight points in less than a minute, and his 14 points in the third quarter had Miami down only 78-77 heading to the fourth. “For me, once I get into a good groove, I feel like everything is going to go in,” James said. For a time, everything did. Then he switched to being a passer at the end, finding Bosh in the corner for the shot that made it 95-93. Wade and Rashard Lewis each scored 14 points for the Heat, who also dropped Game 1 of the NBA Finals against Oklahoma City two years ago. They have won five straight series after dropping the opening game. The Spurs were in good position, withstanding James assault long enough to lead by one with under 2 minutes to play. But they were shut out from there until Manu Ginobilis 3-pointer as time expired. “LeBron with the ball did a pretty good job at his end and we had to be really perfect at the other end and we didnt,” Spurs coach Gregg Popovich said. “We didnt take advantage of things. We made bad decisions.” And it didnt help them that they had to deal with James at the end of this one. Ginobili finished with 19 points for the Spurs, whose 18 points in the fourth quarter were half the 36 they scored in the opener. “We have a very competitive group and you have two days to commiserate how that game went down,” Heat coach Erik Spoelstra said. “It was frustrating, painful going through that for two days and now we have to manage the other emotion.” After their sensational finish to Game 1, the Spurs picked up right where they left off, making 10 of their first 15 shots. They opened an 11-point lead early in the second before James got going. He had three straight Miami baskets, and a follow shot later in the period gave the Heat their first lead at 34-33. Notes: Parker has 1,026 assists in the post-season, moving past Michael Jordan (1,022) for eighth place on the career post-season list. He also passed Jordans Hall of Fame teammate, Scottie Pippen, for 13th on the career scoring list with 3,655 points.
