Téma: Jak postupovat / the season and has three other LPGA NEW YORK — Carmelo Anthony scored 31 points and the New York Knicks improved their best start in nearly two decades to 4-0 with a 104-94 victory over the Dallas Mavericks on Friday night. Reserve JR Smith added 22 points for the Knicks, the only unbeaten team in the NBA. They hadnt been perfect after four games since the 1993-94 team started 7-0 en route to the NBA Finals. The Knicks averaged 104.7 points and allowed just 85.3 per game while routing Miami and sweeping a home-and-home series from Philadelphia to start the season, but didnt seize control of this one for good until nearly the midpoint of the fourth quarter. O.J. Mayo scored 23 points for the Mavericks, who had their three-game winning streak snapped and lost to the Knicks for just the fourth time in the last 22 meetings. Playing without injured starters Dirk Nowitzki and Shawn Marion, the Mavericks had shot 60 per cent in consecutive games for the first time in franchise history and were averaging 116.3 points on 56.2 per cent shooting during their win streak. But they managed only two more field goals after Mayos layup cut the Knicks lead to 90-86 with 7:32 remaining. New York scored the next eight points, five from Anthony, to pull away. New York finished with eight 3-pointers after making an NBA-record 43 in its first three games. In the first meeting since Jason Kidd left Dallas to sign with New York, he played only 16 minutes as the Knicks went with Smith, who got hot in the third quarter while they opened an 84-78 lead. Kidd seemed on the verge of returning to the Mavs in July before signing with the Knicks. Owner Mark Cuban was angry, believing Kidd backed out of a deal, and said before the game he was done talking about the point guard. With Kidd joining Tyson Chandler, the Knicks have two starters from the Mavs 2011 NBA championship team, a club the aging Knicks mentioned often during the preseason as a team that showed older groups could win. Chandler provided the games first double-digit lead at 96-86 with a ferocious follow dunk and free throw after being fouled, screaming in the direction of the Dallas bench after the basket. Anthony scored 10 points in the first quarter as the Knicks took a 25-23 lead. Mayo opened the second with consecutive 3-pointers, and seven straight points by Vince Carter later in the period gave Dallas a 41-32 lead. The Mavericks were ahead 57-55 at the break. Notes: Marcus Camby made his season debut after sitting out the first three games while getting back in shape. He missed most of the preseason with a strained calf. The centre became the fourth-oldest player in Knicks history at 38 years, 7 months, 18 days — with two of the older ones coming this season. Herb Williams, now a Knicks assistant, was 41, 2 months and 16 days in his final appearance. Kurt Thomas is 40 and Jason Kidd is 39. Rasheed Wallace (38-1-23) rounds out the top five. … For their heroic actions during Superstorm Sandy, the Knicks honoured Jon Candelaria of New York, and Dr. Pradeep Mally, Gail Geraghty and Erica Chong of NYU Langone Medical Center with this months Sweetwater Clifton “City Spirit” award, named for the teams first African-American player and recognizing those who have made a difference in the lives of others. Candelaria rescued a driver who was stuck in a stalled taxi that was nearly submerged by water, while the hospital employees carried infants to safety after the facility lost power. … Both teams wore special blue shooting shirts with red and white and stars surrounding the NBA logo as the league celebrates Veterans Day this weekend. GUADALAJARA, Mexico — Swedens Anna Nordqvist and South Koreas So Yeon Ryu each birdied the final hole for a share of the second-round lead with Thailands Pornanong Phatlum on Friday in the Lorena Ochoa Invitational Nordqvist and Ryu shot 5-under 67 to match Phatlum at 9-under 135 at Guadalajara Country Club. Nordqvist and Ryu played in the same group. “Im always really happy to play with Anna,” Ryu said. “We have so much fun always, so I love it. We pretty much played so well, especially on the back-nine. We hit a really great shot and she made every birdie putt. I was really excited to see her, to see how she is playing.” Nordqvist is winless on the tour since the 2009 LPGA Tour Championship. “Were only halfway through and, obviously, the best golfers in the world are here so you cant really think about winning or leading the tournament right know,” Nordqvist said. “We have two more days, so you have to try to play your game and put low scores out there.” Phatlum, the first-round leader in the 36-player event, had a 69. “Im very happy with my score, but the putting not very good,” Phatlum said. “I just missed a few short putts.” South Koreas Inbee Park was a stroke back along with Americans Lexi Thompson and Gerina Piller. Thompson had a 64 for the best round the first two days. Pilller shot 65, and Park had a 68.dddddddddddd The 18-year-old Thompson won the LPGA Malaysia last month for her second tour title. “I just went into today playing fearless and just committed to my lines,” Thompson said. “I dropped a few more putts today, and that always helps.” The top-ranked Park swept the first three major championships of the season and has three other LPGA Tour wins this season. Shes winless in eight starts since the U.S. Womens Open in late June. Second-ranked Suzann Pettersen and No. 3 Stacy Lewis were tied for ninth at 6 under. Pettersen had a 68. The Norwegian player is coming off a successful title defence in the LPGA Taiwan, her third victory in her last five starts and fourth of the season. Lewis shot a 66. Defending champion Cristie Kerr was 27th at 2 over, following a 77 with a 67. Tournament host Lorena Ochoa won 27 LPGA Tour titles before retiring in 2010. “Its been great. I love Mexico,” Piller said. “Most people dont know this, but my maiden name is Mendoza. I dont speak much Spanish, but I love the food, love the people and its just a great tournament. I never got to play with Lorena, but shes been a huge inspiration.” cheap nfl jerseys wholesale jerseys ’ ’ ’ |

Téma: Jak postupovat / y. The Bengals put him TORONTO – Amongst the data gathered by the Maple Leafs coaching staff and available to the team at large after every game is the total number of scoring chances created by each individual player (not to mention those generated by the opposition). And so despite the fact that James van Riemsdyk has scored just once in the past 10 games and has just three goals since the start of December, the 24-year-old believes he is generating opportunities that, for the time being, are going unrewarded. “Im creating a lot of chances,” said van Riemsdyk, following a grueling Sunday practice which followed an ugly 7-1 showing at the ACC a night earlier. “As long as thats there I know Im going in the right direction. I know that its going to go in eventually.” van Riemsdyk has blossomed into a bona-fide force during his brief tenure in Toronto. In 89 games with the club, hes scored 33 goals, totaled 62 points and was named to the U.S. Olympic team for the first time following Wednesdays Winter Classic in Ann Arbour. He remains on pace this season for career-highs in goals, assists, points, ice-time and just about every other offensive category. But after a torrid start – 12 goals in the first 25 games – he, like a number of Leafs, has cooled off into something of a slumber offensively. van Riemsdyk managed his 15th of the year against the Red Wings during the snowy New Years Day bash. The goal snapped an eight-game drought and was just his third since the outset of December. “Its a long season,” he said. “You go through ebbs and flows; youve just got to stick with it.” Luck has not been on his side amid the cool spell. A career 11 per cent shooter, van Riemsdyk has been successful on just 5 per cent of his 59 attempts during the 16-game struggle. A flurry of chances opposite Cam Talbot in the opening moments of Saturdays embarrassing showing against the Rangers ultimately went unfulfilled – as they have been in the past month. A confident personality, his swagger doesnt appear rattled. “Obviously its a game of bounces,” said van Riemsdyk, who remains second on the team in scoring with 30 points in 41 games. “Its weird how sometimes you can get a lot of grade-A chances and the goalie makes big saves and you cant buy one. And then you maybe throw one at the net from a crazy angle and it hits off something and goes in. Youve just got to stick with, stay positive and go from there.” That advice could well be served for 23-year-old Nazem Kadri. Kadri is lumbering through one of the driest spells of his short NHL career. He has just one point in the past nine games and only four points in the past 14 outings. His growing pains have been notable after a quick start of 13 points in 14 games. “He seems to be in a little bit of a funk,” said Randy Carlyle, observing that Kadri had been standing still too often in recent weeks and not moving his feet. “Our advice to him is commit to the time off the ice and when youre on the ice you work extremely hard and then you do extra and thats what hes doing right now.” Kadri has seen some of his luck flounder this season – he posted an impressive 44 points in 48 games last year while owning the highest on-ice shooting percentage of any player in the league – while facing a nightly barrage of increased competition. A year ago, he lined up in the Leafs no. 3 centre hole, but with the offseason departure of Mikhail Grabovski and long-term injury to Dave Bolland, has been forced to rise up the depth chart, squaring off with a new level of talent every night. He even saw 12 games on the top line with Tyler Bozak sidelined by an oblique injury. Paired almost exclusively with Phil Kessel since he was traded to the Leafs, van Riemsdyk endured a similar challenge when he landed in Toronto. “Obviously being on [Kessels] line you see a lot of that [increased competition] and its a great challenge,” said van Riemsdyk. “[But] its definitely a little bit different. When I was in Philadelphia I was definitely in more of a secondary role where youre expecting to play against probably their third [defence] pairing and not obviously their top checking line; you get a little bit more room out there.” Carlyle pulled Kadri aside for a brief word at the end of Sundays practice, preaching persistence and hard work. “When things arent going well for yourself you have to be selfish and take a look in the mirror and say Hey Ive got to work myself out and the old adage was you put your nose to the grindstone and work your way through it,” said Carlyle of Kadri, who wasnt available for interview on Sunday. “And I dont think that is too far from the way young players today should approach it.” “Youve just got to stick with it I think,” added van Riemsdyk, trying to break free from a slump himself. “You cant beat yourself up too much. Its a game of confidence and youve got to try to keep that confidence high throughout the whole year, get to work, and improve upon the things you can improve upon.” . Téma: Jak postupovat / a pair of goals and added CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Unable to get much lift off his sore right ankle, Bobcats centre Al Jefferson figured it was time to make an adjustment. So Jefferson made a conscious decision to try a new technique Tuesday night, jumping off both feet instead of just his right. He never expected the results he got. Jefferson scored a season-high 35 points, Kemba Walker had 12 of his 25 in the fourth quarter and Charlotte snapped the New York Knicks five-game winning streak with a 108-98 victory. “It worked for me tonight — on my jump shot, on my jump hook. I just decided to try to do something different to get some lift,” said Jefferson, who acknowledged for the first time hell likely need surgery on the ankle after the season. It was Jeffersons best game since joining the Bobcats as a free agent this past off-season and more of what he envisioned when he signed a three-year, $41 million contract. When he wasnt dominating in the low post, he was kicking the ball out to the wing and the Bobcats were knocking down shots, hitting 6 of 14 on 3-point attempts. It came at a great time. Coach Steve Clifford said he didnt want any doubt to slip into his players minds after theyd lost three straight and eight of their last 10 games. “Thats a professional win,” Clifford said. “Thats a win you can get on a plane and feel good about.” Walker was 4 of 4 from the field in the fourth quarter, including 3-pointers on back-to-back possessions. He also finished with seven rebounds and five assists. The Bobcats benefited from the return of Michael Kidd-Gilchrist, who had eight points and seven rebounds after sitting out the last 19 games with a broken left hand. He also brought some needed energy on the defensive end. “You can see value of having a guy like Kidd-Gilchrist,” Clifford said. “People dont always understand the energy and intensity and those kinds of things. Those are skills.” Carmelo Anthony led the Knicks (15-23) with 20 points and six rebounds. Tyson Chandler returned to the lineup after missing four games with bronchitis, but wasnt much of a factor. Chandler made both shots from the field and finished with five points and four rebounds in 16 1/2 minutes. “I felt decent out there,” Chandler said. “I was a little winded the first half but after that I kind of got my lungs together.” J.R. Smith was benched for the second time in four games. With Chandler limited, the Knicks had a tough time shutting down Jefferson. “We havent been hitting the bigs,” Knicks coach Mike Woodson said. “Were letting our bigs play guys one-on-one and (Jefferson) got going and by the time we started to double team, he had already felt good about his game and that didnt even help either.” The Bobcats led throughout the second half, but the Knicks cut the lead to four with less than 11 minutes remaining. Thats when Walker began to take over. After a timeout, Walker scored a layup on a nice one-handed feed from Jefferson, who had drawn double coverage. Walker then knocked down a pair of 3-pointers, including a 29-footer from the top of the key to beat the shot clock. Jefferson added an inside jumper to push the lead the 13 and the Knicks never challenged again. Jefferson finished 14 of 20 from the field and had eight rebounds. “You could tell from the first time he touched the ball he was on the attack,” Clifford said. After giving up 23 second-chance points in a loss to the Chicago Bulls on Saturday, the Bobcats limited the Knicks to just four Tuesday night and led 55-46 at the break. Jefferson had a huge first half, scoring 19 points on 7-of-9 shooting as the Bobcats outscored the Knicks 22-14 in the paint. Kidd-Gilchrist, the No. 2 overall pick in the 2012 draft, returned to the starting lineup for the first time since Dec. 3. He missed a few layups, but provided a needed presence on defence. The Bobcats were 7-12 without Kidd-Gilchrist in the lineup. The Knicks clearly looked fatigued on the second night of a back-to-back. “Im not using that as an excuse but we were a step slow defensively in terms of our rotations,” Woodson said. “We scored enough points. 98 points is more than enough points. This team averages 93 points and we gave up 108 points so our defence was non-existent. You just cant do that, especially on the road.” NOTES: Mike Tolbert and DeAngelo Williams of the NFLs Carolina Panthers were in the crowd. … Amare Stoudemire had an embarrassing turnover when he threw a pass to no one in particular and knocked over a womans drink in the front row. … In the fourth quarter, a portion of Knicks fans on hand for the game began chanting Smiths name, but to no avail. Téma: Jak postupovat / ieces to thi Former UFC welterweight champion Georges St-Pierre vacated his title in December, a month after a controversial split decision victory over Johny Hendricks. It is a decision that has allowed the Canadian MMA star to find a little peace in his life. “Im very happy, Im sleeping better, I dont regret anything,” said St-Pierre to TSN.ca. “Im very happy with the decision I made.” The time away from the cage has allowed the Saint-Isidore, Quebec native to focus on other interests. During the Sochi 2014 Olympics, St-Pierre put his money where his mouth is regarding the Canadian mens hockey team. He made a jersey bet with one of his friends during the Canada vs. USA semifinal game and one with UFC light-heavyweight number one contender Alexander Gustafsson, a native of Arboga, Sweden, over the gold medal game. St-Pierres belief in the Canadian national hockey team never wavered and was rewarded. “I was confident enough to make the bet,” said St-Pierre. “I was happy that I won.” As for representing Canada on an international stage, St-Pierre sees himself a little different than those athletes that wore the maple leaf during the Olympics. “My sport is not a team sport, I dont represent a county and I have fans around the world,” said St-Pierre. “I try to present a good image for anyone that looks up to me wherever they are from. Im doing it for myself and my fans.” At UFC 171 Hendricks, who narrowly lost to St-Pierre in what was also his last bout, will take on Robbie Lawler for the vacated welterweight title. The former champ will be a very interested observer. “Im going to watch the fight because its a fight I want to see and its going to be a good fight.” As for picking a favourite, GSP gives a slight edge to the last man he faced before turning over the title. “Striking wise they both have the capacity to knock each other out. Ill give the edge to Hendricks because he has an edge in the wrestling and grappling.” cheap nfl jerseys . Barcelona hosts third-division side Cartagena in the return leg of their round-of-32 tie after winning their first meeting 4-1. DETROIT — Prince Fielder stood with a smile and recalled his earliest memories of old Tiger Stadium, when he would hang out at the ballpark where his father hit so many massive home runs. “For me, it was always Sparky saying I was going to pinch hit — and I really believed him,” Fielder said, referring to former manager Sparky Anderson. “Im just glad I get to come back.” The Tigers introduced Fielder on Thursday after finalizing a US$214 million, nine-year contract with the free agent first baseman, who is expected to hit a lot more home runs than his dad. Fielder was born in 1984, the last time Detroit won the World Series. After luring him back to Michigan with the fourth-largest deal in baseball history, the Tigers are hoping Fielder will help usher in a new championship era for the Motor City. “This is awesome,” Fielder said. “Its kind of a dream come true. Im excited.” Detroit began seriously pursuing Fielder after designated hitter Victor Martinez tore the anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee during off-season conditioning. Now the Tigers have three of baseballs biggest stars — Fielder, Miguel Cabrera and Justin Verlander — all in their primes. Detroit won the AL Central by 15 games last year but lost to Texas in the AL championship series. “Were trying to win right now,” general manager Dave Dombrowski said. “We tried to win last year. We were close. I think weve reached a point now, on a yearly basis, we feel that way. When you look at the core of our group of players, theres a lot of guys that are on that field right now that are quality players.” It will be up to manager Jim Leyland to figure out where to play all of his powerful hitters. He said Thursday the Tigers will move Miguel Cabrera from first base to third to make room for Fielder. He also listed a possible batting order, with Cabrera hitting third and Fielder fourth. Its a lineup based on power, not speed. That much is clear. “If they hit it where theyre supposed to hit em, they can trot,” Leyland said. “Were going back to the old-fashioned baseball. Weve got big-time power on the corners.” Fielders father Cecil became a big league star when he returned to the majors from Japan and hit 51 home runs with Detroit in 1990. Cecil played with the Tigers into the 1996 season, and young Prince made a name for himself with his prodigious power displays during batting practice at Tiger Stadium. Detroit plays at Comerica Park now, and times have changed. Leyland manages the Tigers, not Sparky Anderson. As for the Fielders, their strained relationship has been well documented, and Prince didnt elaborate on it Thursday. “Im just ecstatic about being with the Tigers,” Prince Fielder said. “Im just here to enjoy the day.dddddddddddd” Fielder did want to debunk one thing: Back in 2008, he talked about becoming a vegetarian, but that apparently didnt last long after all the commotion. “Im not a vegetarian,” he said. “I was, for like three months.” Fielders contract includes a limited no-trade provision. He can be traded to 10 clubs without his consent before 2017, when he gains rights to block all trades under baseballs labour contract as a 10-year veteran who has been with a team for at least five years. He will earn $23 million in each of his first two years with Detroit, then will make $24 million annually in the final seven seasons of his contract, according to terms obtained by The Associated Press. That contrasts with Albert Pujols backloaded $240 million, 10-year contract with the Los Angeles Angels, agreed to last month. Pujols gets $12 million this year and $16 million in 2013, with the salary increasing to $23 million in 2014 and then rising $1 million annually. The move carries plenty of risk for the Tigers. Fielder is 27 and has been extremely durable during his career, but Detroit is committing to him for almost a decade. “I go by my instinct, like everybody else does,” said owner Mike Ilitch, who signed off on the massive deal after what had been a quiet off-season for the Tigers. “My instincts told me that this is going to work out fine.” The next big step will be Cabreras. Hes returning to a position he played while with the Florida Marlins, but hes played only 14 games at third base with the Tigers |

Téma: Jak postupovat / o working with him again BEREA, Ohio — Josh Gordon got in some practice time before returning to plead his case to the NFL. Clevelands Pro Bowl wide receiver took part in the teams workout Monday and then left practice early to participate in his appeal hearing with the league by telephone. Gordons hearing resumed Monday at the leagues offices in New York. Gordon and his legal team met with an arbitrator for nearly 10 hours on Friday, arguing against a potential one-year suspension for violating the leagues substance abuse policy. Gordons lawyer, Maurice Suh, is contending that the 23-year-old failed a test for marijuana because of secondhand smoke. Gordon missed two days of practice last week and Saturdays scrimmage in Akron. The Browns offence isnt the same without him and Clevelands players were excited to see him back on the field. “Its always special to have Josh out there,” cornerback Joe Haden said. “When Josh is out there, its like LeBron came back. Hes a big, big part of our offence and a really, really special player.” Despite being suspended two games last season and playing with three quarterbacks, Gordon still led the league with 1,646 yards receiving. The Browns are eager to find out whether theyll have Gordon at all this season, and theyre not sure if the delay in his case is an encouraging sign. Until they hear differently, the Browns are just happy to have No. 12 in uniform. “I just like seeing him on the field,” wide receiver Nate Burleson said. “There are certain guys that the league needs to have on the field and hes one of them. Hes one of the more premiere talents in the NFL, so I hope that hes in a Browns jersey this year.” cheap jerseys from china . – The Colorado Rapids say theyve received a first-round 2015 MLS SuperDraft pick, allocation money and a contract buyout from FC Dallas as compensation for coach Oscar Parejas leaving to take the same job with his former club. Madrid lost Cristiano Ronaldo to injury early in the match and failed to create any clear scoring chances after the Portugal forwards exit. His team now trails city and Champions League final rival Atletico Madrid by four points with two games to play. The Carolina Panthers are finally getting active in free agency. The Panthers bolstered three areas of need on Friday, signing unrestricted free agent quarterback Joe Webb and cornerback Antoine Cason to one-year contracts and wide receiver Tiquan Underwood to a two-year deal. Financial terms were not released. The moves come after the Panthers signed free agents safety Roman Harper and wide receiver Jerricho Cotchery earlier this week. Webb gives the Panthers an extra quarterback during off-season workouts with Cam Newton sidelined four months rehabilitating from ankle surgery. Derek Anderson, who re-signed with the team, is expected to run the first-team offence while Newton is out. Webb spent the last four seasons with the Minnesota Vikings, seeing action at quarterback and wide receiver. The Panthers said in a press release they plan to use Webb at quarterback. A former sixth-round draft pick out of Alabama-Birmingham, Webb completed 88 of 152 passes for 853 yards and three touchdowns and five interceptions with Minnesota. Webb signed with the Panthers after what coach Ron Rivera described as a “strong workout” on Friday. “He is a young player who intrigues us and has a similar skill set to Cam,” Rivera said in a press release. “With Cam sidelined for the spring, it is an opportunity to get a good evaluation of Joe as well as Matt Blanchard, who was on our practice squad last year.” The 6-foot-1, 195-pound Cason is a six-year NFL veteran who played for Rivera in San Diego when Rivera was the Chargers defensive co-ordinator.dddddddddddd Cason has played in 80 games with 49 career starts and is a potential replacement for starting cornerback Captain Munnerlyn, who signed this off-season as a free agent with Minnesota. “I have experience with Antoine and look forward to working with him again,” Rivera said. Cason was a first-round draft pick by the Chargers in 2008 and had 12 interceptions and four forced fumbles in five seasons in San Diego. He signed with Arizona last year and saw his playing team dramatically reduced. He played in all 16 games but did not start, finishing with 14 tackles and two interceptions. Cason has been a durable player. Hes played in 96 consecutive games, which is tied for the third-longest active streak among NFL cornerbacks behind only William Gay (112) and Corey Graham (109), according to the Panthers. Underwood played the last two seasons with Tampa Bay where he started 10 games. He brings big play potential to Carolinas offence — something they lost when Ted Ginn Jr. signed a free agent contract with the Cardinals this off-season. The 6-foot-1, 185-pound receiver caught 24 passes last season for 440 yards and four touchdowns in 2013, averaging 40 yards per TD catch and 18 yards per reception. “Tiquan has the kind of speed that helps any team and has shown good progress as a receiver,” Rivera said. Téma: Jak postupovat / his 29th goal of the sea ANAHEIM, Calif. — This season is beginning to resemble 2006-07 for All-Star forward Corey Perry, one of five Anaheim Ducks holdovers who helped them win their only Stanley Cup title seven years ago. Rookie goalie Frederik Andersen won his sixth straight game to start his NHL career, making 35 saves in place of ailing Jonas Hiller, and the league-leading Ducks extended their winning streak to five with a 3-1 victory over the Vancouver Canucks on Sunday night. “If you look around this room, weve got a lot of new faces,” Perry said. “But theres a lot of guys in here with a lot of character that want to win and prove that they belong here and go out there every night working as hard as they can. Theyre playing every game like its their last. And if we keep doing that, were going to be successful.” Perry had a goal and an assist, Nick Bonino got the go-ahead goal in the final minute of the second period and Andrew Cogliano added an empty-netter, helping Anaheim improve the NHLs best record to 15-3-1 and the best home start in franchise history to 8-0. “Its surprising, but its a nice surprise,” coach Bruce Boudreau said. “The way our training camp ended, with us losing the last three games — then losing to Colorado 6-1 in the opener — boy, I wouldnt have thought that we would have put this kind of string together. But then they started to compete, started playing for each other and started battling for jobs.” The Ducks are the leagues only undefeated team on home ice, and the first to win their first eight home games since the 2010-11 Los Angeles Kings. Anaheims 31 points through its first 19 games eclipsed the previous club mark of 30 set in that 2006-07 championship season. Andersen became the first goalie to win his first six NHL games since Damian Rhodes did it for Toronto from March 1991 to December 1993. According to a Ducks spokesman, Hiller was under the weather — but available to play. He sat by the locker room watching the game at the end of the runway leading to the bench area. Ducks captain and leading scorer Ryan Getzlaf, who had his first career hat trick Friday night in a 6-2 victory over Buffalo, was scratched for the first time this season because of an upper-body injury. Mathieu Perreault took his place on the teams top line between Perry and Dustin Penner. “When youre missing the second-leading scorer in the league, one of the best players in the world — and your captain — youre always going to miss him,” Boudreau said. “But I thought we did a great job of battling. The team wanted to show that we can survive injuries because weve got good depth. It gave other guys a chance to play, and they stepped up.” Tom Sestito scored his first goal of the season for the Canucks, back at Honda Center for the first time since beating Anaheim 5-0 last January in the Ducks lockout-delayed home opener. “Its been a struggle the past two games here,” said coach John Tortorella, whose team lost 5-1 to the Los Angeles Kings the previous night. “We know what they are as players, we know what they are as people, and they are going to be the players we know they are. They are going to bounce out of it.” The Canucks have played three consecutive games without a goal or an assist from either of the Sedin twins for the first time since last January, the second week of the lockout-delayed season. “When you keep them off the scoresheet, youre probably going to win,” Bonino said. “Daniel Winniks line did a great job against them, and when other guys found themselves out there against them, they were aware. But you cant run at them. Thats the biggest thing. They want you to come flying at them because they can spin off and make plays. So you have to play under control, but also get on them quick. We did that, and Freddie shut the door.” Eddie Lack made 20 saves in his fourth NHL start, all of them on the road |

Téma: Jak postupovat / e Pebble Beach Invitatioy, Ted CALGARY — Kyle Shewfelts Olympic gold medal in gymnastics shines bright a decade later because it is the first and only of its kind in Canada. Unlike the Olympic champion who has a teammate or hero to follow or emulate, Shewfelt blazed his own trail to win the floor routine in 2004. He is the only Canadian to win an Olympic medal of any colour in gymnastics. The Calgarian is among the athletes, builders and coaches who will be inducted into the Canadian Olympic Hall of Fame in June. Hell join speedskater Cindy Klassen, the victorious mens eight rowing team of 2008, speedskating coach Marcel Lacroix, hockey coach Pat Quinn and the late, former Alberta premier Ralph Klein among the 2014 inductees. Sports journalist Richard Garneau, who covered 23 Olympic Games, will receive the Canadian Olympic Order posthumously. While Shewfelt agrees no Canadian beat a path to the podium for him, he didnt feel isolated in his quest. “Why did it happen for me? I wasnt by myself,” Shewfelt said. "I had tons of supporters, amazing teammates, my national federation was so supportive of the dream. They sent me around the world when I was 17 to get that experience. I just never wavered in my belief that it was possible. "I watched the Russians, I watched the Americans, the Chinese and the Japanese and I imagined myself being just like them. I did have incredible Canadian ambassadors in sport, Jennifer Wood was my idol, Curtis Hibbert, Stella Umeh, these are people I really looked up to. “For myself, I wanted to take it to the next level and I guess it took a lot of courage for myself to do that, but it was something I was willing to risk. I knew as an athlete that when I ended by career, I wanted to look back and have no regrets. I had to chase the biggest dream possible.” Shewfelt, 31, retired in 2009 after competing in three Olympic Games. He broke both legs in competition less than a year out from the 2008 Summer Games, yet finished ninth in the vault and 11th in the floor routine in Beijing. Shewfelt, who has a vault named after him, recently opened a gymnastics school in the city. The Canadian Olympic Hall of Fame was established in 1949. It is housed in the Frank King Olympic Visitors Centre at Calgarys Canada Olympic Park about a kilometre from Canadas Sports Hall of Fame. Previous inductees into the Olympic Hall of Fame include wrestler Daniel Igali, swimmer Mark Tewksbury, synchronized swimmer Caroline Waldo and sprinter Donovan Bailey. The class of 2014 was revealed Wednesday in downtown Calgary along with the announcement that the city will host a three-day celebration June 4-6 of Canadas performance at the Sochi Games. Shewfelt and Lacroix, who coached Christine Nesbitt and the mens pursuit team to Olympic gold in 2010, attended the news conference. Quinn and members of the mens eight participated in a conference call. Klein spearheaded Calgarys bid for the 1988 Winter Games when he was mayor of the city. Albertas premier from 1992 to 2006 died last year at the age of 70. Winnipegs Klassen won five medals, including one gold, at the 2006 Winter Olympics in Turin, Italy. Jacques Rogge, the president of the International Olympic Committee at the time, labelled her “the woman of the Games.” With six career medals, she and Clara Hughes are Canadas most decorated Olympians of all time. Klassen, 34, did not compete in trials to qualify for Sochi because of a concussion. She has yet to announce her retirement from speedskating. Canada won the first mens hockey gold in 50 years in 2002 with Quinn behind the bench. Canadians were still stinging from finishing out of the medals four years earlier when NHL players first participated in the Winter Games. It didnt help that Canada got off to a rough start in Salt Lake City with a loss to Sweden. “In the first game, we had eight lousy minutes,” Quinn recalled. “Everybody was down after the first loss to Sweden. By the time we reviewed the tape of the game, we knew that we werent that far off. Even though the score was ugly, the game wasnt ugly.” The leadership of Mario Lemieux, Steve Yzerman, Joe Sakic and Joe Nieuwendyk steered the team through choppy waters and also got young players on the team to toe the line, Quinn said. “Our leadership took over and said this is the way were going to do it,” Quinn said. "That was when we simply had a change in our mindset about what team means. We got these young guys paying attention through the process. “Thats what saved us in Salt Lake. Our goal was to get better shift by shift because we had no real practice time and thats where the coach needs his team to come together is through practice. We used the early games as a practice to get ready for the final round.” The mens eight of coxswain Brian Price, Andrew Byrnes, Ben Rutledge, Dominic Seiterle, Kyle Hamilton, Malcolm Howard, Jake Wetzel, Adam Kreek and Kevin Light led the final from start to finish to win gold in Beijing. It was a tale of redemption after a heavily favoured Canadian crew finished out of the medals four years earlier. The Canadians dodged early pitfalls in Beijing. Primed and ready for their first heat, races were cancelled that day due to lightning. “Picture a bunch of racehorses or dogs at a race track and theyre all revved up to go and attack and they have all this energy and adrenaline built up,” Kreek explained. “We were like these racehorses ready to run, these hunting dogs ready to pounce.” With officials hustling boats off the course, Price used what little time they had to get hard rows in as they headed for the docks. “We didnt have to go back and sit on bikes or on the rowing machine and try to get some work in,” Hamilton said. "We were able to manipulate the situation to make sure we got our work in and were ready to go. “Instead of just paddling back, Brian had already shifted us into the next day into the next race plan. That really kind of set us up for the next day, set us up for the regatta and told the young guys on the crew that we were ready to go, we knew what we were doing and we could handle every situation.” They needed that composure the following day. Not 500 metres into their heat, the Australians blew a rudder and veered towards the Canadian boat. “Were seeing this Australian boat coming towards us and its going to pierce right through our hull,” Kreek recalled. "The eight of us wont act unless Brian says something. Brian sees the Aussies coming at us and says take five strokes now. “All eight of us take the biggest strokes of our life. We barely missed the Aussie boat as it skidded right behind our stern.” Lacroix coached Nesbitt and the mens pursuit team of Denny Morrison, Mathieu Giroux and Lucas Makowsky to gold at the 2010 Winter Games in Vancouver and Whistler, B.C. Now the associate director of sport at Calgarys Olympic Oval, Lacroix says Canadas sport system now recognizes and values the coachs contribution to an athletes performance. One example is the Canadian Olympic Committee now pays medal bonuses to coaches of Olympic medallists. “From the provincial level all the way to the national team and to the COC, there is a big push in terms of recognizing the profession of coaching,” Lacroix said. “It has become a profession. Now with the bonuses that are given to the coaches for their effort, I think it is showing a lot of respect for that profession at all levels.” wholesale jerseys . — Canadian Erik Bedard pitched into the fifth inning in his bid to win a spot in Tampa Bays rotation, helping the Rays beat the Toronto Blue Jays 6-3 on Saturday. Téma: Jak postupovat / with another te NEWARK, N.J. — Jaromir Jagr has decided to remain with the New Jersey Devils for another year. “I was happy being here,” the 42-year-old Jagr said Thursday in a conference call from Belarus, where he is playing for the Czech Republic in the world championships. “There was no reason to change. There was no reason to test free agency. What would happen? Someone might give me more money, but nobody can guarantee me that Id be happy someplace else. If Im happy, then theres no reason to go anywhere else. I play my best hockey when Im happy.” The Devils did not release terms of the contract. Jagr said it was a one-year deal. The contract is believed to be worth $6 million with incentives. “I like having one-year deals,” Jagr said. “If something goes wrong, you never know if you have a long contract and say have three years left. One year is good for everybody. I think both sides wanted to get this done quickly. Lou (Lamoriello, the teams president and general manager) wanted to do it, because he wanted to see the direction where hes going with the team.” Jagr was the Devils leading scorer this, finishing with 24 goals and 43 assists for 67 points. “Id truly like to score more goals,” Jagr said. “I feel like I can play with the guys we have. We have a better chance to play better. We have a good group of guys and thats very important. I like to play a lot, because I dont get tired.” Jagr will turn 43 in February of next season, his 21st year in the NHL. A two-time winner of the Stanley Cup when he played for the Pittsburgh Penguins, Jagr has 705 goals and 1,050 assists. The Devils missed the playoffs for the third time in the last four seasons. “We made a lot of mistakes early,” Jagr said. “But we were able to play good against the good teams. We lost a lot of points to teams that didnt make the playoffs. It put us in a position where we had to win almost every game and that was too much pressure. We didnt have any great superstars, but we had good goal scorers that give us a chance to compete against anybody and beat anybody. Its just my feeling, but we didnt have to be great to win games, if we work hard.” Jagr said that he liked the camaraderie in the Devils locker room. “We have a lot of fun,” Jagr said. “We have a loose atmosphere. Theres not a bad guy in the room. Maybe we need a bad one to get in the playoffs.” Jagr was named Thursday as one of the three finalists for the Bill Masterton Award, given to the player “who best exemplifies the qualities of perseverance, sportsmanship and dedication to hockey,” along with Manny Malholtra of the Carolina Hurricanes and Dominic Moore of the New York Rangers. “It means a lot that the hockey writers picked me,” Jagr said. “Hockey writers can be very picky, so for them to pick me means a lot. I just love the sport and follow the laws of the sport.” Jagr said he plans to keep playing after next season. “Theres no reason to stop,” Jagr said. “I want to play for as long as I can. As long as I work hard, I am going to continue to play.” . World Peace finally got his wish to play for the Knicks when he signed last summer, but he never gained a place in Mike Woodsons rotation and appeared in just 29 games before asking for his release. “It was a childhood dream of mine to play basketball professionally in New York City, and it has truly been a blessing for that dream to have come true. However, under current circumstances, my agent and I have agreed that being bought out would be the best option for me professionally,” the New York native said in a statement. “I would like everyone to know that whether I was on the court or off, I could not have been happier playing for and cheering on this amazing city, my city.” The moves were announced Monday before the Knicks hosted the Dalllas Mavericks.dddddddddddd By getting waived this week, both veterans will be able to sign with another team and be eligible for the playoffs. World Peace, who grew up in Queensbridge and starred at St. Johns when he was still Ron Artest, missed nearly all of January due to a procedure on his left knee. He played seven minutes Friday in a loss at Orlando, and then wrote on his Twitter page on Saturday that his agent was working on a buyout. Udrih, who also signed last summer, had 12 starts among his 31 appearances. “We are disappointed that it did not work out for Beno and Metta here in New York,” Knicks general manager Steve Mills said. “We thank them for their contributions this season and wish them well.” Woodson said he and Mills would talk Tuesday about adding players. Woodson said he thought the Knicks needed a guard to defend on the perimeter, and another big man with Andrea Bargnani and Kenyon Martin injured. Téma: Jak postupovat / he match in 2 hours, 34 LAKE FOREST, Ill. — Injured quarterback Jay Cutler hopes to return to the Chicago Bears lineup in two weeks. The Bears next game is at Minnesota on Sunday, and coach Marc Trestman said he expects Cutler to remain sidelined because of a high left ankle sprain. Chicago then hosts Dallas on Dec. 9. If hes not ready for that Monday night game against the Cowboys, Cutler expects to return at Cleveland on Dec. 15. “I will be playing either that Monday game or wherever we play after that,” Cutler said Monday during his weekly appearance on WMVP-AM 1000 in Chicago. “Lets lean toward the Monday game, though.” Cutler said that he wont need surgery and theres “zero chance” hes finished for the season. Trestman is also confident that his quarterback will return in December. But Cutler will likely sit out his third straight game when the Bears visit the Vikings. “Im totally confident hell play again this season,” Trestman said. “I dont have any reason based on what Ive been told. Its still week-to-week. Im confident. I think Jay is confident. You have to leave yourself an opening, but there is no underlying information here.” Trestman also said Monday that Matt Forte slightly hyperextended his knee the previous day in a loss at St. Louis and ruled out linebacker Lance Briggs (shoulder) for the Minnesota game. As for Cutler, the past month has been a rough one. Cutler tore his left groin muscle against Washington on Oct. 20 and missed the next game at Green Bay two weeks later. He returned earlier than expected against Detroit on Nov. 10, only to injure his ankle. Josh McCown has played well in his place. The injuries cast another layer of questions surrounding Cutlers future in Chicago. He has an expiring contract and could be hit with the franchise-player tag after this season. If that happens, Cutler told the radio station he would be fine with it and that he wants to stay in Chicago. “Im not going to take anything personally,” Cutler said. “If they want to franchise me, Im going to feel good about the situation were in. Were going to be in our second year of the offence with these guys. Were going to be better, Im going to be better, so its not personal. Téma: Jak postupovat / two sensational GLENDALE, Ariz. — Chalk up another victory for the steamrolling Anaheim Ducks and goalie Jonas Hiller. Hampus Lindholm scored two goals, and the Ducks won for the 16th time in 17 games by beating the Phoenix Coyotes 5-3 on Saturday night. Ryan Getzlaf scored his 23rd goal of the season in the Ducks sixth straight win. Getzlaf left in the second period because of a lower-body injury and didnt return. X-rays were negative. Hiller made 28 saves in his 13th straight win, the NHLs longest streak since Detroits Chris Osgood did the same in 1996. Only seven other goalies in league history have won 13 in a row. “Its definitely a great thing, but at the same time Im really excited about winning with the team,” he said. “The personal things kind of put the cherry on the cake.” Sami Vatanen and Dustin Penner also scored as the Ducks swept the five-game season series with the Coyotes. “If youre winning you really feel good about yourself and you kind of want to keep that feeling,” Hiller said. “Here everybody goes out believing that we can beat anybody in any stadium.” Thomas Greiss started in goal for Phoenix but was lifted for Mike Smith after the Ducks scored three times in a span of 5:11 in the second period. Greiss had 19 saves, and Smith made six. Lauri Korpikoski, Martin Hanzal and Mike Ribeiro scored for the Coyotes. The Ducks improved their NHL-best record to 34-8-5 and 73 points. Phoenix has lost four of five. “Right now we arent very good,” Coyotes captain Shane Doan said, “and we havent been very good for a while.” Mathieu Perreault had three assists, and Corey Perry added two for the Ducks, who have scored at least four goals in each of their last six games. Radim Vrbata assisted on all three Phoenix goals. Vatanen started Anaheims second-period barrage with a slap shot from the right point that slipped through Greiss legs to make it 2-1 with 14:16 left. Penner netted the next one, with a slap shot off a pass from Perry with 10:49 remaining. Getzlaf then got to a loose puck in the crease and scored to make it 4-1 with 9:05 to go. “It was a good flurry,” Ducks coach Bruce Boudreau said. “Once we got the second goal, which might have been a little bit soft, I thought it sort of energized the team. Then we came on and get the third and you get the fourth. Things were going pretty smoothly there for a while.” That was it for Greiss. Smith came on and gave up one goal in the third period. Lindholm scored a power-play goal with a shot that hit the camera just inside the net to put the Ducks ahead 5-1. Hanzal scored with Phoenix on a 5-on-3 advantage, and Ribeiro added a final goal long after the games outcome had been determined. That gave Boudreau something to complain about — “a sloppy finish.” Boudreau said Hiller might be back in goal Sunday night in Detroit. “Ill talk to the goaltending coach on the plane,” Boudreau said. “Well talk to Hilly and see how he feels, and then well make a decision.” Phoenix took a 1-0 lead 3:57 into the game. Korpikoskis shot from in front of the net was deflected by Hiller, but the puck came right back to Korpikoski, who knocked it in for his seventh goal of the season. It was the fifth time in six games that Anaheim had allowed the first goal, and the Ducks have won all five. Greiss made a diving stop of Nick Boninos shot but left the net open behind him. Lindholm, who had just three goals for the season before Saturday, got the deflection and scored to make it 1-1 with 7:33 left in the first period. Phoenix was outscored 9-4 in consecutive home losses to Minnesota and Anaheim. “Were not a very cohesive group right now,” coach Dave Tippett said. “When you chase games all the time you look like an out-of-sort group, and thats where we are.” NOTES: Anaheim has scored a combined seven goals in the second period in its past two games, including four at Nashville on Thursday. … Smith was benched after Phoenix won only three times in his last 17 starts. Brendon Kay hobbled around on a bad ankle and matched him in the fourth-quarter cold. It went down to overtime for the second year in a row. Some ending for this Ohio River rivalry. Bridgewater rallied No. 19 Louisville in the fourth quarter, and Dominique Brown ran 2 yards for a touchdown in the first overtime Thursday night for a 31-24 victory over Cincinnati in the Cardinals farewell to the American Athletic Conference. “I told my mom that I wanted to cry, but tears of joy,” Bridgewater said. "Im so proud of this team. We have a lot of heart. “Coach tells us all the time to ride the wave. We rode it. Then Cincinnati rode it for a while, but we knew we would ride it again and we did.” The comeback clinched the first AAC title for Central Florida, which had a one-game lead over Cincinnati (9-3, 6-2) heading into the final weekend. Louisville will play in the Russell Athletic Bowl in Orlando, Fla. “It was great to see this team finish the way they finished,” coach Charlie Strong said. “You talk about a team with a lot of resiliency and a lot of heart. There were high expectations this season.” For the second year in a row, the Ohio River rivals went to overtime to decide who gets the Keg of Nails, this time for the foreseeable future with Louisville (11-7, 7-1) leaving for the Atlantic Coast Conference next season. The Cardinals won 34-31 in overtime in the rain in Louisville last season. This one went to overtime on a wet, raw night when Cincinnatis Tony Miliano kicked a 26-yard field goal with 7 seconds left. An interference penalty in the end zone set up Browns 2-yard run to open overtime. The Bearcats got the ball and wound up with a fourth-and-14 at the 29, and Kays pass went off the hands of Anthony McClung at the 6, ending Cincinnatis first overtime game at Nippert Stadium since 2003. The Bearcats could be headed to the Belk Bowl. Bridgewater was 23 of 37 for 255 yards with three touchdowns, two of them in the fourth quarter. He eluded three tacklers for a 14-yard run on fourth-and-12 to keep one touchdown drive going, and finished it by scrambling away from defenders and throwing an off-balance pass for a 22-yard score. “Were athletic at defensive end, andd we were grabbing air a lot of times,” Cincinnati coach Tommy Tuberville said.dddddddddddd “We had him in our grasp. That fourth-down run, that was obviously the one that took the air out of our defence.” He and Kay kept topping each other in the fourth quarter, but Cincinnatis sixth-year senior didnt have one more big play left in him. He was 22 of 40 for 304 yards with two interceptions and two touchdown scrambles, one of which left him woozy. For Louisville, the game amounted to a farewell. The Cardinals head off to the ACC next season, leaving Cincinnati behind. Louisville claimed the final Big East football title last season, beat Florida in the Sugar Bowl and was favoured to win the first AAC championship. A loss at home to Central Florida ended the Cardinals chances of winning the leagues BCS bowl berth. Cincinnatis slim hopes were extinguished by the loss Thursday. Both defences rank in the Top 10 nationally for fewest points and yards allowed. They dug in a cold rain that made it tougher to throw and catch the ball, until the two quarterbacks lit it up in the fourth quarter. Bridgewater rallied Louisville with two sensational plays. He slipped away from three tackles for his 14-yard run on fourth-and-12, then ran around in the backfield avoiding rushers before throwing a 22-yard touchdown pass to Damian Copeland with 8:08 left, ending up on his back after the off-balance throw. “The plays Teddy made in that fourth quarter,” Strong said with admiration. “I thought he was sacked. Then he breaks free and gets the ball to Damian Copeland.” Kay responded with a 57-yard completion that set up Ralph David Abernathy IVs touchdown run, and Bridgewater matched it with a 4-yard touchdown pass to DeVante Parker and a 24-21 lead with 2:26 to go — just enough time for Kay to lead the Bearcats in range for a tying field goal. Kay hurt his left ankle on the opening drive of the second half and played the rest of the game with a pronounced limp. He went for an MRI after the game. He also got dazed on his second touchdown run, getting hit hard by two defenders as he crossed the goal line in the third quarter. “Thats how tough the kid is,” Tuberville said. “You cant say enough about him. Im proud he was my quarterback for the last nine games.” cheap nfl jerseys wholesale jerseys ’ ’ ’ |

Téma: Jak postupovat / nting the Melon Video. MILAN, Italy — Fiorentina fell to a surprise 1-0 defeat at Cagliari as it lost ground in the race for a Champions League place, while AC Milan coach Clarence Seedorfs winning start in the Italian league ended on Saturday. Milan was held to 1-1 at home by Torino. Cagliari scored six minutes from halftime when Mauricio Pinilla blasted home from the penalty spot after Facundo Roncaglia tripped Marco Sau. The home side could have doubled its tally in stoppage time as first Fiorentina defender Stefan Savic almost scored an own goal then Albin Ekdals shot clipped the top of the upright. Fiorentina new signing Anderson made his first start following a loan move from Manchester United but proved ineffective. The Tuscan team was missing leading strikers Mario Gomez and Giuseppe Rossi, who are out with long-term injuries. Fiorentina remained three points behind third-place Napoli, which visits Atalanta on Sunday. Later, Seedorf was looking to become the first Milan coach since Luigi Bonizzoni in 1958-59 to win his opening three Serie A games. Milan, which was without the suspended Mario Balotelli, dominated but Torino took the lead in the 17th minute thanks to a wonderful solo effort from Ciro Immobile. He ran almost half the length of the pitch before feinting past Daniele Bonera and firing across into the bottom right corner for his 11th goal of the season. Adil Rami scored his first for Milan since his move from Valencia to level matters four minutes after halftime. The France defender ran onto Sulley Muntaris short pass before unleashing a rocket shot into the left of goal. Robinho thought he gave Milan the lead 10 minutes later when he curled Kakas through ball into the far side of the net, but he was narrowly ruled offside. “Its a really great emotion to score,” Rami said. “It was four or five months that I didnt play, it was a difficult moment for me, it wasnt easy in my head. Im lucky to have a strong character.” Rami was suspended by Valencia at the beginning of October after insulting his coach and teammates in a radio interview. Elsewhere, Udinese snapped a run of four successive defeats to beat Bologna 2-0 in a relegation fight. Udinese took the lead in the 15th minute when a somewhat soft penalty was awarded against Michele Pazienza for a nudge on Andrea Lazzari, and Antonio Di Natale fired Udinese in front, despite Bologna goalkeeper Gianluca Curci guessing the right way. Nico Lopez sealed the result in stoppage time when he finished off a swift counterattack. Udinese moved provisionally six points clear of the relegation zone. Bologna remained just a point off the bottom three. . The solutions? Not so much. And he didnt waste any time getting down to business. In what was a relentless cross-examination, Nel set the stage early: Nel: "You killed a person. You killed Reeva Steenkamp, thats what you did. You shot and killed her. “Say Yes – say I killed Reeva Steenkamp.” Pistorius: “I have a responsibility to Reeva and myself to tell the truth.” Nel: “You will not hide things from the court.” Pistorius: “Im human, I have faults, I have sins. Im a Christian. The Lord came down to this world for people who have sinned.” Nel: “As a Christian you will not lie.” And so the most critical confrontation of this trial began: seasoned litigator Nel versus Olympic double amputee Pistorius. Here are the key points covered in this first day of cross-examination. Pistorius: Intent To Kill Pistorius testified that not only did he not intend to shoot Steenkamp, he didnt intend to shoot anyone. Heres what he said, and as youll see, he made sure he was clear about it: Pistorius: “The discharge was accidental. I believed there was someone in the toilet coming out to attack me. I never intended to shoot anyone … I went to the bathroom and felt in danger. I didnt have much time to think. I just discharged my firearm. I didnt intend to shoot someone. I shot out of fear. I didnt shoot at someone. I didnt intend to kill anyone…I didnt have time to think about what I was doing. I had finger on my trigger. I didnt intend to shoot anyone. I fired before I had a moment to comprehend what was happening.” Nel: “Was the only way out for you to shoot an intruder?” Pistorius: “I didnt have time to think or not think about shooting an intruder. My life was in danger and I was worried what could happen to Reeva. People had been tied up on the estate before. Before thinking I fired four shots. When I realised the scale of what was happening I stopped firing. It was an accident, the way I discharged the firearm. I didnt intend to shoot.” This is a massively important piece of testimony for Pistorius and a critical component of the trial. Heres why. Pistorius can still be convicted of murder if it can be shown that he intended to kill – period. It doesnt matter who – just that he intended to kill someone and that the force he used was disproportionately excessive given the circumstances. Remember, in order to make out the charge of murder against Pistorius, it must be shown that he had the requisite intent to kill and followed through on tthat intent.dddddddddddd If convicted of murder, he would face 15 years in prison. So he wants to avoid a murder conviction and look to settle on a lesser charge of culpable homicide, which means killing someone by accident. If convicted on culpable homicide, he would likely only go to jail for five to 10 years. So despite firing four shots through a locked bathroom door at 3am, Pistorius repeatedly declared that he “didnt intend to shoot anyone” and the discharge was an “accident”. These statements are designed to establish that Pistorius lacked the intent needed to make out a conviction of murder. Its not enough to say he didnt intend to shoot Steenkamp; he needs to say that he didnt intend to shoot anyone. Pistorius testimony shows that he was well prepared by his lawyers. He hit on the key legal points in ordinary English. However, the issue of plausibility remains. As Nel pointed out, “was the only way out for you to shoot the intruder?”. For example, he could have grabbed Steenkamp and fled. This is the most important element from Day 1 of the cross-examination of Pistorius. Zombie Stopper Nel was relentless in his cross-examination. In part, that was designed to try and break Pistorius and push him to admit he intended to kill Steenkamp. One way Nel tried to apply pressure on Pistorius was by presenting the Melon Video. The video was also produced because it helped paint Pistorius as reckless and gun-crazed. In the video, Pistorius and friends blow up melons with guns and Pistorius is heard saying this: “Its a lot softer than brain but its like a zombie stopper.” This was followed by Nels blunt question: Nel: “One can see the effect the ammunition had on a water melon. It exploded. You know the same thing happened to Reevas head?” Reconstruction or Reworked Evidence Nel also focused on inconsistencies in Pistorius statement to police right after the death of Steenkamp. Nel accused Pistorius of “reconstructing” or “reworking” his evidence. For example, in Pistorius bail application, he said that he went to the balcony to retrieve a fan. However, on the stand today he denied that. While some of these inconsistencies may not seem important, Nel told Pistorius they were in fact not “insignificant” as they show “you are lying.” Before the trial was adjourned for the day, Nel made a point of referring to todays testimony as “Day 1” of the cross-examination of Pistorius. This suggests that the cross may continue for days. Indeed, there is more in store for the most critical witness of this trial. Téma: Jak postupovat / ad no trouble leading UNCs reb BIRMINGHAM, England — Danny Welbecks double steered Manchester United to a 3-0 victory at Aston Villa on Sunday to halt a four-game winless run in the Premier League. The pressure eased on manager David Moyes as Welbeck sidefooted in the opener in the 15th minute and the striker found the target again inside three minutes. “It was a good all-round team performance and everyone got together and played good football and got the goals,” Welbeck told broadcaster Sky Sports. “Good strikers finish and thats where I want to play — up top, but Im happy to play in the team whether on the left or right.” In a vibrant United display, Tom Cleverley netted his first goal of the season seven minutes into the second half as the champions avoided a third straight league loss. The victory pushed United up to eighth place, 10 points behind leader Arsenal. It was lapped up by a vocal away support, who chanted: “We are staying up.” Villa Park is one of the most accommodating grounds for United, which is unbeaten there since 1995. The visitors helped themselves with their speed and intensity, a sharp improvement on grim recent performances. Villa was unable to match the tempo and left far too many open spaces for United players to flood into. Antonio Valencia gave defender Antonio Luna a miserable time, and Rafael was able to surge to the byline and send over a superb cross that was met perfectly by Adnan Januzaj. The teenagers header flashed past goalkeeper Brad Guzan, and when it came bouncing back off a post, Welbeck was racing in to apply a first-time finish to the rebound to put United in front. Within three minutes, the visitors had struck again. This time Valencia provided the opportunity, with Welbeck sliding between defenders to touch home. It was the perfect way for United to answer their critics, and Welbeck to silence a few of his. The England striker reveled in the responsibility of leading the attacking line as Robin van Persie starts his month on the sidelines, with Wayne Rooney dropping deep. Rooney did skim the outside of a post after Valencia had opted to pass rather than shoot after driving deep into the area. Welbeck spurned a glorious chance to claim his first hat-trick from a very similar position after Valencia had once again proved too hot to handle. It was an all-too-familiar story for Villa, for whom Christian Benteke was a shadow of the striker who terrorized defences throughout last season. Early in the second half, Rooney powered forward and slipped a pass to Cleverley, who drove home his first Premier League goal in almost a year. “It plays on your mind when youre a midfielder that you have to score a few goals,” Cleverley told Sky Sports. "We played as a three, which gave us more license. A year of not scoring came out in my celebration. “I think I played quite well and kept the ball and kept us ticking at a high tempo. I want to kick on from here now and so does the team.” After the goal, Cleverley was throwing himself in front of Andreas Weimanns shot as United attempted to preserve their healthy advantage, a sign in itself of the determination in the away ranks to right the wrongs of a dreadful few weeks. The return of United midfielder Darren Fletcher from the bench after almost 12 months out due to a chronic bowel condition merely added to the party atmosphere among the away support. United goalkeeper David De Gea denied Karim El Ahmadi after Welbeck had earlier floated a chip onto the roof of Guzans goal but by then, thousands of Villa fans had already started to head for the exits. Téma: Jak postupovat / on a breakaway, b Rick Dudley will be staying on as assistant general manager of the Montreal Canadiens for the forseeable future after agreeing to a more lucrative deal to stay with the franchise. The move comes after the Canadiens were approached by the Buffalo Sabres for permission to speak to Dudley – a former Sabres player and head coach. "The Sabres called for permission and I appreciate that, Im flattered, Dudley told TSN Hockey Insider Pierre LeBrun of ESPN.com. "And Berg (Montreal GM Marc Bergevin) said he would never stand in my way which I appreciate, too. But he said, Ive got something for you to think about. He presented me with an option, and you know what, I came to Montreal because of Berg, and Ill stay in Montreal because of Berg. Its been a lot of fun. If youre doing something you enjoy, why would you change it? Dudley said Bergevin phoned the Sabres on Wednesday to inform them he would stay with the Canadiens. In return, he got a contract extension. "It got extended by a lot, said Dudley, who turns 65 in January. "It probably means itll be my last deal. This is a great organization. Id like to help build one more (champion) like the Blackhawks and Lightning, I think it can happen with this organization, and if it does, it would be wonderful. Dudley was hired away from the Toronto Maple Leafs by Bergevin in 2012. Prior to joining the Leafs, he worked with the Atlanta Thrashers from 2009 to 2011, beginning as associate general manager before being promoted to general manager, assuming that role until the franchise moved to Winnipeg. From 2004 to 2009, Dudley worked with the Chicago Blackhawks serving as the teams assistant general manager after starting off as a hockey consultant. In Chicago, his work was conducive to the Hawks first Stanley Cup win in 48 years. Dudley previously had served as general manager of the Florida Panthers from 2002 to 2004. From 1999 to 2002, he was the Tampa Bay Lightnings general manager and played a significant role in building this team for the 2004 Stanley Cup win. Prior to joining the Lightning, he held the position of general manager of the Ottawa Senators in 1998-1999, taking the team to the top of their division for the first time in franchise history. Dudley thanked Sabres executive Pat LaFontaine for reaching out to him. "I think Patty LaFontaine will do the right things in Buffalo and I really appreciate them calling, Dudley told LeBrun. A surprisingly good ice rink was straight ahead, glistening in the Hollywood night. “We felt like rock stars,” Anaheim defenceman Ben Lovejoy said. “That was by far the coolest feeling Ive ever had playing hockey.” After all the spectacle and sensation of the NHLs first warm-weather outdoor game, Jonas Hiller and the Ducks demonstrated whos on top of this rivalry — with or without a roof. Corey Perry and Matt Beleskey scored first-period goals, and the Ducks beat the Kings 3-0 at Dodger Stadium on Saturday night. Hiller made 36 saves in his 20th career shutout as the league-leading Ducks dominated the landmark meeting of Southern Californias two hockey teams under the stars in Chavez Ravine. Andrew Cogliano added an empty-net goal with 1:29 left to close this unusual chapter in the NHLs expanded slate of outdoor games. “Its a little different playing out here, but its nothing that threw us off,” Hiller said. The league threw a California carnival for the event: People in shorts and tank tops played Frisbee and practiced yoga between periods while skateboarders rolled past a ball hockey court featuring youth teams. Although the temperature was 63 degrees with significant humidity when Wayne Gretzky dropped the first puck, the ice held up fairly well in the night air. The Ducks had no problems adjusting to the new sightlines and backgrounds while shutting out the Kings. “It was maybe a little slower than some rinks, but it was smooth,” Anaheims Teemu Selanne said. “Were used to not-good ice out (West) anyway. The whole package was incredible. You dont have that many chances to play in front of 55,000 people. This was pretty high on my bucket list.” The Ducks earned their 21st victory in 24 games, beating Los Angeles for the second time in three days. The Kings lost their fifth straight game. The Kings hosted the first official outdoor game west of the Rocky Mountains in recognition of the NHLs near half-century in Los Angeles and their rivalry with the Ducks, who joined the league two decades ago. And though this game bore little resemblance to the snowbound outdoor contests in northern climes, the excited fans and enthused players embraced this unorthodox version of pond hockey with gusto. “I cant see any reason we shouldnt do this more,” Selanne said. “The quality of hockey was greatt.dddddddddddd Im going to remember this.” The teams wore specially designed jerseys for the game, with the Kings crown logo dominating their grey jerseys while the Ducks sported bright orange. After a day filled with fan events and celebrations of the cold-weather sports rich California roots, Anaheim showed whos currently in charge of this rivalry. The Ducks followed up their 2-1 victory in Thursdays rivalry meeting in Anaheim by opening a seven-point lead over Chicago atop the overall standings. Jonathan Quick made 18 saves as the Kings matched their longest skid of an otherwise solid season. After getting a goal in the opening minutes of Thursdays loss, Los Angeles hasnt scored in 116 consecutive minutes against the Ducks. “As for us not scoring goals, its been a constant theme, and its getting embarrassing,” Los Angeles defenceman Drew Doughty said. “So we need to pick up our socks, and everyone needs to get hungry around the net and score goals.” Hiller made 20 saves and stopped Anze Kopitars penalty shot in the first period, and the Swiss netminder turned away every good scoring chance after that in his fourth shutout and 24th victory of the season. Just 2:45 in, Perry scored the first goal in Dodger Stadium history, connecting rather easily on a rebound of Ryan Getzlafs shot off a faceoff. Less than six minutes later, Beleskey was alone at the side of Quicks net to score on a play set up by Selannes pass. Kopitar was awarded a penalty shot midway through the period when Lovejoy hooked him on a breakaway, but the Kings leading scorer couldnt do much with the puck, and Hiller stopped it. “The experience was fun and it was exciting, playing on a stage like this in front of all those people, but it was definitely not the outcome we wanted,” Kopitar said. Cogliano had the best scoring chance of the second period, but lost the puck on a breakaway. Hiller was outstanding after struggling in his last start against Winnipeg, and Cogliano wrapped up the win in the closing seconds with his 17th goal. NOTES: The crowd was announced at 54,099 — a number that likely made Gretzky smile. … Despite significant public interest, the game didnt sell out until early Saturday. The NHL overpriced many tickets when they first went on sale, forcing price reductions and refunds in the sections that werent selling. … Perry joined Cristiano Ronaldo as the first players to score a goal in their respective sports at Dodger Stadium. Late in the game, Datsyuk received an elbow to the jaw from Jared Cowen. Datsyuk will miss at least two games and possibly more. The NHL described the hit as accidental and stated that Cowen will not be punished. The Finnish national mens team announced that the 43-year-old forward would serve as team captain on Wednesday ahead of the nations Olympic tournament opener on Thursday against Austria in Sochi, Russia. Finnish web site “Lions” (Leijonat.fi) was the first to break the news earlier on Monday. Defender Kimmo Timonen and forward Leo Komarov were named as alternate captains. Selanne has previously appeared at the Games in Albertville (1992) as well as the four tournaments for which NHL players have been loaned out: Nagano (1998), Salt Lake City (2002), Turin (2006), Vancouver (2010) and now Sochi. In need of a replacement for injured Jose Iglesias, Detroit acquired the 37-year-old from the Baltimore Orioles on Monday for infielder Steve Lombardozzi. Tigers general manager Dave Dombrowski said Gonzalez could get the bulk of the playing time, sharing the position with Andrew Romine, who was acquired Friday from the Los Angeles Angels. “Im not looking at 150 games,” Dombrowski said. “Hes an older guy. But we do think he can be a key guy for us.” Gonzalez has a .246 average with six major league teams and was the starting shortstop for the 2003 World Series champion Florida Marlins. Gonzalez agreed Jan. 31 to a minor league contract that calls for a $1.1 million salary in the major leagues. He had a .429 batting average during spring training with Baltimore and is to report to Tigers on Tuesday. “Hes always had great hands, andd I cant imagine his hands have gotten any worse,” Tigers manager Brad Ausmus said.dddddddddddd. “Ive heard great things about him in spring training, as far as how hes moving. And I think his experience is a huge advantage.” Dombrowski said his office had been busy for the past week trying to find replacement shortstops. There even was joking speculation the team might try to talk first base coach Omar Vizquel, 46, into making a comeback. Vizquel saw Gonzalez play winter ball in Venezuela and gave the Tigers a positive scouting report. “Hes younger than Omar,” Ausmus said with a laugh. Two years ago Vizquel was the oldest shortstop in big league history. The 25-year-old Lombardozzi hit .259 with two homers and 22 RBIs for the Washington Nationals last season and was dealt to Detroit in December for pitcher Doug Fister. To make room for Lombardozzi on the 40-man roster, the Orioles designated catcher Johnny Monell for assignment. And denting Mariano Rivera, well, that compounded the New York Yankees misery. Stephen Drew hit a tying single off the all-time saves leader with two outs in the ninth inning, then Shane Victorino lined a go-ahead single in the 10th that sent the Red Sox past the Yankees 9-8 in a Thursday night thriller. “Just a character win, a team win,” Boston manager John Farrell said. The Red Sox rallied in the opener of a four-game series loaded with playoff implications. It felt like a playoff matchup, too, especially after New York erased a 7-2 deficit with six runs in the seventh. There were plenty of pitching changes and pinch-hitters and a key pinch-runner who will certainly remind some Red Sox fans of Dave Roberts daring dash from the past. Plus, there was an outburst — Joba Chamberlain (2-1) was ejected by first base umpire Joe West, who ruled Victorino checked his swing right before the deciding hit. “Its frustrating because, you know what, I thought he went. But you have to be able to overcome things,” Yankees manager Joe Girardi said. The Red Sox own the best record in the AL, and won for the 10th time in 12 games. The Yankees had their three-game winning stopped in a loss that blunted their push for a wild-card spot. This was the start of an 11-day stretch in which the longtime rivals will face each other seven times. Boston is 8-5 against the Yankees this year. “We just blew it,” Rivera said. Rivera entered with an 8-7 lead and got two quick outs. But Mike Napoli singled on a full count and speedy pinch-runner Quintin Berry took off on the next pitch, stealing and continuing to third when catcher Austin Romines errant throw bounced away. Drew tied it and handed Rivera his sixth blown save in 47 tries, a day after the closer was needed for four outs. “Hes the best in the game,” Drew said. “Hes been fun to watch on the other side. But getting out there with two outs and trying to do your job, it makes it tough. Hes been doing it his whole career, so its just one of those things that worked out for me tonight.” Berrys steal might get Red Sox rooters thinking about when Roberts stole second as a pinch-runner — also with Rivera on the mound — to rescue the Red Sox in Game 4 of the 2004 AL championship series, sending them toward to a long-elusive title. Well ahead in the AL East this year, these Red Sox still have a long way to go to match that championship run. “If it leads us to where Dave did, well take that, too,”; Farrell said.dddddddddddd “Tonight was the first time hes been pressed into that specific spot, and he came through,” he said about recently acquired Berry. Jacoby Ellsbury singled with one out in the 10th off Chamberlain and stole second. Victorino held up on a half-swing, West ruled, and lined a single that sent Ellsbury scooting home. Right fielder Ichiro Suzuki made a strong throw, but Romine couldnt handle it. Craig Breslow (5-2) wound up with the win. He helped himself by picking off Alfonso Soriano at second base with one out in the ninth. Koji Uehara earned his 18th save, extending his scoreless streak to 26 innings over 23 games. Lyle Overbays two-out, two-run single capped a six-run rally in the seventh that put the Yankees ahead 8-7. Down 7-2, New York broke loose against starter Jake Peavy and relievers Matt Thornton and Junichi Tazawa. The Yankees also stole a season-high six bases. New York has been charging hard ever since Bostons Ryan Dempster drilled Alex Rodriguez with a pitch in mid-August. This was the first game since that dustup at Fenway Park. A day after a 20-4 romp over Detroit in which it tied a team mark with eight home runs, the highest-scoring club in the majors kept up the homer barrage behind Will Middlebrooks and Victorino. Brett Gardners RBI single in the seventh got the Yankees within 7-3. Robinson Cano, who drove in three runs, had an RBI grounder. Soriano met Tazawa with an RBI single, Curtis Granderson doubled home a run and Overbays single put New York ahead. Middlebrooks hit a solo homer off Ivan Nova for a 3-2 lead in the fourth. Victorino homered to begin a three-run fifth for a 6-2 lead. It was his final minor league rehab start, and the Red Sox are hoping he can start Tuesday night at Tampa Bay. … Red Sox C Jarrod Saltalamacchia missed his third straight game because of a sore back. Téma: Jak postupovat / an overtime loss to Mi VANCOUVER — Martin Rennies tenure as head coach of the Vancouver Whitecaps can be summed up in one word — inconsistent. It led to his downfall on Tuesday. The Major League Soccer club fired Rennie after a second straight up-and-down season that saw the Whitecaps start strong before limping across the finish line. Vancouver recovered in time to squeak into the 2012 playoffs — a first for a Canadian MLS team — but a 1-7-2 slide midway through the 2013 campaign was too much to overcome and cost Rennie his job. “Ultimately, the rationale behind the decision is the inconsistency,” Whitecaps president Bob Lenarduzzi said at a B.C. Place Stadium press conference announcing the move. "If we look back over the two years, we had two relatively good starts, and in each of those seasons we seemed to tail off. “In the first year we were able to survive that and make the playoffs, but in the second year we werent able to do so.” Lenarduzzi said the Whitecaps have a “football committee” that includes himself, two of the teams owners and two other executives, which determines the fate of the teams coach, among other duties. He danced around the question when asked if the decision to axe Rennie was unanimous, saying only that they had come to “a consensus” that it was the right move. Rennie, who compiled a 24-25-19 record in two seasons with Vancouver, watched the Whitecaps 2013 playoff hopes come to end when they dropped a 3-2 decision to the Colorado Rapids in Commerce City, Colo on Oct. 19. Vancouver (13-12-9) rebounded to beat Colorado 3-0 in Sundays regular-season finale, with star Brazilian forward Camilo Sanvezzo burying a hat trick to win the MLS Golden Boot as the leagues top scorer. But it wasnt enough to save Rennie, who thanked the club and its fans in a statement released on the Whitecaps official website. “In life we have different roles at different times, and although there is great satisfaction in taking a project to fruition there is also a strong sense of accomplishment from turning a team around and giving it a solid foundation for future success,” the statement read. "It has been an absolute privilege to have played the role that I have for the Whitecaps and I look forward to watching the organization move forward from strength to strength. " Lenarduzzi said the search for a new coach will begin immediately, and whoever gets the job will be the Whitecaps fourth in four MLS seasons. The 38-year-old Rennies fate was probably sealed when Vancouver stumbled midway through the season, but the Scot also failed to win the Canadian championship in his two years at the Whitecaps helm, which would have qualified the club for the CONCACAF Champions League. “Theres a fine line between success and, what would be deemed to be failure, and we just need to give ourselves the best chance possible to be on the right side of that,” said Lenarduzzi. "Over the last two years we felt that thats perhaps the biggest problem weve had. “Making the playoffs, winning the (Canadian championship) are benchmarks for us. We havent been able to achieve that.” There were also questions about Rennies squad selection, tactics and the development of some of Vancouvers younger players. “Theres always going to be grumblings of guys that arent happy based on whether they play or whether they think that the managers way of coaching are valid,” said team captain Jay DeMerit, who does not yet have a contract for 2014. “No manager is going to keep 30 guys happy.” The Whitecaps did win this years Cascadia Cup — their only title since joining MLS — which is a trophy awarded to the top team in head-to-head competition with the Seattle Sounders and Portland Timbers. Vancouver actually finished with more wins and points this season than it did in 2012 and had just one fewer victory than Portland, which finished as the No. 1 playoff seed in the ultra-tight Western Conference. Vancouver, which wound up seventh, also tied for fourth in MLS with 53 goals scored. Rennie joined the Whitecaps on Nov. 1, 2011, from the Carolina RailHawks of the second-tier United Soccer Leagues First Division after a disastrous first season in MLS that saw Vancouver go through two coaches and finish tied for last overall. Prior to Sundays victory over Colorado, Rennie seemed to be lobbying to keep his job. “If playoffs was the only barometer, then nine coaches would be gone every single year and that would leave MLS and every team in complete disarray,” Rennie told reporters last week. "You cant do it that way. You have to build an organization over time. “When I came here this team was the worst team in MLS, it was in disarray and it was almost irrelevant in Vancouver. Now its a very relevant team and its poised to be a great team, so Im very pleased with how thats gone.” Vancouvers run to the 2012 MLS playoffs was brief, with the Whitecaps exiting in the first round at the hands of the eventual-champion Los Angeles Galaxy. DeMerit said although Rennie, who was trumpeted as a young and innovative mind when he arrived in Vancouver, succeeded in helping to build the clubs foundation, a veteran coach might be whats needed to take the Whitecaps to the next level. “At key times, experience does matter, and how you progress is mainly calling on those experiences,” said DeMerit. "I think maybe in key moments, that was part of Martins learning experience and hell be a better coach for that. “You want a coach thats been there. You want a coach with experience and you want a coach that can lead you in the right direction when it really matters.” . |

Téma: Jak postupovat / d to the second round PONTE VEDRA BEACH, Fla. — The PGA Tour rescinded the two-shot penalty given to Justin Rose before his final round Sunday in The Players Championship, changing its mind to say sophisticated TV technology was the only way to determine the violation. Rose was given a reprieve by an addition in January to the “Decisions on the Rules of Golf” that waives a penalty if the slightest movement of a golf ball can only be detected by enhanced technology. It was the first time Decision 18/4 was used. “I didnt know that this new recall was in place,” Rose said after closing with a 3-under 69. Rose was penalized after the third round when he addressed a chip shot off the 18th green, and suddenly backed away. Rose said he didnt think the ball had moved from its original position, even after consulting with playing partner Sergio Garcia and seeing a replay on the video board. Only after his round, when he met with officials and watched a third television angle zoom in on the ball, was it clear that it moved ever so slightly. He was penalized under Rule 18-2b — one shot for the ball moving at address, another for returning it to its original position. His 71 was changed to a 73, and he went left the course seven shots out of the lead. About an hour before he teed off Sunday, he was back to where he was. Because it was too late to adjust the tee times, Rose started his final round more than an hour before the other players on the same score of 7-under 209. Rose was within two shots of the leaders at the turn until three straight bogeys. Rose closed with back-to-back birdies and finished at 10-under 278. “We feel like we did the right thing here,” said Mark Russell, vice-president of competition for the PGA Tour. The PGA Tour said in a statement the incident had been reviewed because Decision 18/4 had never been used. “The Rules Committee reopened the incident and focused on how much the use of sophisticated technology played a part in making the original ruling,” the statement said. “After that review, it was determined that the only way to confirm whether and how much the ball in fact changed position was to utilize sophisticated technology.” Russell said the tour consulted Grant Moir from the Royal & Ancient and Thomas Pagel of the USGA before deciding to apply the new decision. Decision 18/4 waives the penalty if a ball movement is not “reasonably discernible to the naked eye at the time” and required enhanced technology, such as HDTV. The example often cited by rules officials is when Peter Hanson had a double-hit that could not be detected except through HD in super slow-motion. One reason cited for penalizing him in the first place was the way Rose backed away from the shot, aware that there might have been movement. Rose maintained he did not think the ball moved until seeing the close-up view that he said was magnified so much “the golf ball looked like a Lego ball.” “I was willing to accept the way things played out last night, and under 50 times magnification, you could argue that there was a tiny bit of a roll toward the toe (of the club),” Rose said. “Im talking a hair or a millimeter or a quarter dimple or whatever it might be.” Russell did not made clear what triggered their decision to review a ruling that had already been made. He described sophisticated technology as “HD zoomed in.” “It was such a slight move that it was not discernible by the naked eye,” Russell said. “He didnt know. He knew something happened when he grounded his club and felt like he pressed the grass down. And it came right back. Everything went down and then the grass went down and the ball came back up. He knew something happened, he backed away from that, but it took something really zoomed in that was not seen on regular television to determine if the ball did indeed move. And it did.” Rose said it was “interesting” that Decision 18/4 was not mentioned Saturday night as he met with officials. He said he only learned about it through comments he was getting on Twitter, and when he saw the decision, it sounded exactly like what had happened to him. “We have never had this tool before that we could apply,” Russell said. “We asked for this and we feel like that this is the first time this has ever been used and we feel like this is exactly why this decision is in there. … I think he deserved exactly what he received under the rules.” Rose said he wasnt going to argue with the officials Saturday night that he would happily go along with whatever they decided. “Im certainly surprised its overturned,” he said. “Very rarely is that ever the case. Never, ever the case. Im not sure.” . CAS said Friday that Suarez, the Uruguay football federation and Barcelona have filed a request for a fast-track appeal against FIFAs ban for nine competitive international matches and four months from all football. “It is likely that a final award will be rendered well before the end of August,” the court said in a statement to The Associated Press. The Spanish league season begins the weekend of Aug. 23-24, when Barcelona hosts Elche. FIFA must also agree to a fast-track procedure. No hearing dates have yet been agreed to, the court said. Arbitrators have also yet to be appointed to judge the case. In typical appeals to CAS, both sides and the court each choose one lawyer on the three-member panel. FIFAs sanctions imposed on Suarez also included a fine of 100,000 Swiss francs ($112,000) for biting the shoulder of Italy defender Giorgio Chiellini in a grooup match at the World Cup.dddddddddddd Uruguay beat Italy 1-0 with a goal scored one minute after Suarezs bite was missed by the match officials. The South Americans advanced to the second round, but without its star striker were easily beaten by Colombia. FIFAs disciplinary panel imposed the ban on June 26. In his submission to that hearing, Suarez wrote that he did not deliberately bite Chiellini, but had lost balance and fell with his mouth open on the Italians shoulder. Suarez later apologized, and Chiellini accepted. The ban currently expires on Oct. 25, the same weekend that Barcelona is due to visit Real Madrid in the first “clasico” of the season. Because Suarez is barred from all “football-related activity,” he cannot train with his new club, which he joined from Liverpool this month. If Suarez loses his appeal, he will also miss three Champions League group matches. Uruguays next competitive match is at the Copa America, which kicks off in June 2015 in Chile. Téma: Jak postupovat / ccount, posting in a LOUISVILLE, Ky. — Louisville quarterback Teddy Bridgewater will forgo his senior season with the No. 18 Cardinals and enter the NFL draft. Projected as a first-round selection and possibly the first QB taken this spring, Bridgewater completed 71 per cent of passes for 3,970 yards and a school-record 31 touchdowns this season, including a career-best 447 yards with three TDs in Saturdays 36-9 rout of Miami in the Russell Athletic Bowl. Bridgewater said in a release that the decision “was extremely difficult,” but added that attending Louisville “was one of the best decisions I could have ever made.” With Bridgewater starting, the Cardinals won 27 games and tied a school record with this years 12-1 finish. Despite some lacklustre efforts following a loss to Central Florida, Louisville entered the bowl game with the nations 18th-ranked passing game at nearly 303 yards per game and 34th in total offence at 453.1. Bridgewaters career highlight was last years 33-23 Sugar Bowl upset of Florida in which the 6-foot-3, 196-pound Miami native earned MVP honours after passing for 266 yards and two TDs. His decision wasnt surprising considering he began the season as a possible Heisman Trophy candidate before those prospects dropped with the October loss to UCF that also ended the Cardinals chances of winning the inaugural American Athletic Conference championship. However, Bridgewaters pro stock remained steady and even gained steam down the stretch after he rallied Louisville past Cincinnati with a gutsy 14-yard scramble on fourth-and-12 and an off-balance 22-yard TD pass to Damian Copeland in the fourth quarter. The Cardinals won 31-24 in overtime to clinch the Russell Athletic bowl bid. Bridgewater consistently remained coy about his future, even after leading the Cardinals to their second consecutive bowl win. Late in the season, Louisville coach Charlie Strong even suggested the possibility that his star quarterback might return for his final year. But after talking with his family and Louisvilles coaching staff, Bridgewater chose the option that was long expected. He leaves as Louisvilles No. 3 career passer with 9,817 yards and 72 TDs against 24 interceptions. His 68.3 per cent completion rate is a school record. “These past three years have allowed me to mature as a person and leave the university as better person and with my degree in hand, which was one of my goals,” Bridgewater said in the statement. “I will cherish every moment on the field and off the field, and every bond that I built. I will forever represent the university with the utmost pride and respect.” Waiting in the wings to succeed Bridgewater are redshirt freshman Will Gardner, freshman Kyle Bolin, and junior Brett Nelson. The Jays officially parted way with Arencibia on Monday by declining to tender a contract offer to the fourth-year catcher. The move came after Anthopoulos signed Navarro to a two-year, US$8-million deal. “Dioner had a wonderful year last year in 240 at bats, and we think that theres some upside there, especially considering his age,” the Blue Jays GM said on a conference call Tuesday. “We just think its a nice fit, and obviously well find out.” Arencibia struggled through the worst season of career in 2013, with a .194 batting average, 21 home runs and 55 RBIs. Anthopoulos said he has no idea why Arencibia regressed so much last season. “I wish I did. I do think hes going to bounce back,” Anthopoulos said. "He was a little banged up, and one thing about J.P., hes a very durable guy, very tough, plays through a lot of injuries. There was a time we almost put him on the (disabled list), he wanted to keep playing, he battled through it and grinded through it, and Ive seen him play with a broken hand and things like that. “But I really dont know, certainly we didnt expect him to have that type of year. .. Obviously hes very proud and has extreme pride in his job, and I think it may have just worn on him.” Still, Anthopoulos said the decision to replace Arencibia wasnt made until the “last few weeks or so.” The 29-year-old Navarro, a 10-year veteran from Venezuela, has served mostly as a backup but was an all-star with Tampa Bay in 2008. He hit .300 with a career-high 13 home runs in 89 games for the Chicago Cubs last season. He also had 34 runs batted in. “Navarro was someone who has pretty good contact rate, low strikeouts, prettty good on base skills, been able to take a walk and work the count,” Anthopoulos said.dddddddddddd"From a game-calling standpoint, the work that we did on him, everyone really raved about his game-calling, and how guys love throwing to him." Anthopoulos said Navarro — whos also played for the New York Yankees, Los Angeles, Cincinnati and the Chicago Cubs — is keen to get return to a starting role in the majors. “The fact that Dioner has played over a hundred games three times in his career, has been an all-star and is only 29, that certainly factored into the decision,” he said. “Dioner is very motivated and very hungry to get back to being that everyday guy, he just hasnt had an opportunity to be the everyday guy since he left the Rays.” The GM said he called Arencibia on Sunday night to let him know his plans. Through his struggles on the field, the catcher became a lightning rod for criticism this past season when the Jays were failing to live up to lofty pre-season expectations. The catcher lashed out on Twitter at Sportsnet analysts Dirk Hayhurst and Gregg Zaun over their negative comments. He then deleted his Twitter account, posting in a final three-part tweet to his some 145,000 followers: "Its unfortunate to see how words are twisted to make false stories. “I give way too much of myself to have others try and make me out to (be) something/someone Im not.” “I will no longer be on twitter,” he said. “Thanks to all the fans who support and praying for the others that hate. God bless.” Anthopoulos said in the “grand scheme of things,” the fact Arencibia vented his frustration on Twitter wasnt a big deal, and said there were never any off-field issues with the former Jays catcher. “I think he was probably one of our best guys in the community, always was available, always was a great supporter of the ball club, any time we had a need in the off-season,” Anthopoulos said. “Theres a lot of things he did behind the scenes that no-one saw so to me he was outstanding.” cheap nfl jerseys wholesale jerseys ’ ’ ’ |

The NHLs new sheriff reacted strongly to complaints from the Sabres on Monday after he elected not to suspend Bruins forward Milan Lucic for his collision with Buffalos Ryan Miller.TORONTO – The starting pitcher tossed a brilliant game. The manager made the correct move going to his bullpen. The Blue Jays lost the game. Whats the saying about best laid plans? All it took was one pitch. The scenario: Blue Jays up 2-0 with two outs in the top of the seventh inning. Marcus Stroman, to that point, had two-hit the White Sox. Only two White Sox hitters, Adam Dunn (three times) and Jose Abreu had reached base off the Toronto starter. Dayan Viciedo was due up as the go ahead run. Manager John Gibbons made the call to the bullpen for Dustin McGowan, his most trusted right-handed reliever not named Casey Janssen. McGowans first pitch was a slider. It was a cement-mixer, as seamheads like to say, in that the slider didnt break. It caught the entirety of the plate. Viciedo was looking for it, stayed back and launched a go-ahead three-run home run into the leftfield seats. There was no doubt where the ball was headed the moment Viciedo made contact. The White Sox led 3-2 and wouldnt cough it up en route to a 4-3 victory. Gibbons, it says here, made the right move going to McGowan. It gave Viciedo a different look. It allowed Stroman to leave the game feeling good about his performance. The result, clearly, was undesirable. The strategy made sense. Still, Gibbons admitted he second-guessed himself. “Yeah, of course,” he said. “I mean, if you could do things over you leave him in but my thinking was (Stroman) pitched his butt off, its unchartered territory, you dont want him to lose the game right there. Thats the way it goes. You always look back on things like that. I had a plan. It just didnt work.” The Blue Jays bullpen blew its 10th save of the season, which puts it in the middle of the pack. Pittsburghs 14 blown saves rank as the worst in the majors. Torontos number is made less hideous when you factor in that six of the blown saves came in a span off 15 games from mid-April to early May.ddddddddddddYet, after McGowan was tagged with Chicagos third and fourth runs on Saturday, Torontos bullpen ERA climbed to 4.45. Thats fifth-worst in baseball. The late-game meltdown sullied the second consecutive strong start by Stroman, who was coming off an eight-inning, four-hit performance in a win over the Yankees on Monday. “Its tough to deal with but its part of baseball,” said Stroman of the Viciedo home run. “I have 100 per cent faith in Dustin to come in and get that out every time. He makes a pitch like he knows he can and were not even having this conversation. I know McGowans going to be right back to it. Im not worried about it. Hes been great for us all year, coming out of the pen, so Im not stressing about it at all.” The Jays were held to two runs, a Darin Mastrioanni two-run homer in the fourth, on four hits over seven innings by White Sox ace Chris Sale. He picked up the win to run his record to 7-1. ABREU IMPRESSES BLUE JAYS Jose Bautista was planning to speak to Jose Abreu about taking part in the home run derby, part of the All-Star Game festivities on July 14 in Minneapolis. Manager John Gibbons is impressed with the 27-year-old Cuban rookie, whose 25 home runs tie him with Edwin Encarnacion and the Orioles Nelson Cruz for the most in baseball this season. “A pretty good looking player,” said Gibbons. “The numbers speak for themselves. Those kids that come over from Cuba, theyre all pretty damn good so that really shouldnt surprise anybody. They put a lot of money into him for a reason and theyre reaping the benefits right now. Hes got a nice, short, simple swing and hes producing with it.” Abreu leads the majors with a .633 slugging percentage. To go with his 25 home runs, he has 16 doubles and a triple, meaning almost 57-percent of Abreus hits have gone for extra bases. Téma: Jak postupovat / for the AL East lead and will also hos OKLAHOMA CITY — Thunder guard Derek Fisher has played more playoff games than anyone in history. He says the Western Conference finals between the Thunder and San Antonio Spurs, filled with major strategy shifts and home blowouts, has produced one of the wildest series hes been involved in. San Antonio leads 3-2 and can close out it out Saturday in Oklahoma City. “Theres no script for this,” Fisher said. “You can try to set expectations, and everybody can sit around and try and predict whats going to happen and which team is going to come out on top, and its just impossible. Thats what makes sports sports, and why people are so excited about either being there or watching it, because you never know whats going to happen.” San Antonios Gregg Popovich and Oklahoma Citys Scott Brooks have one-upped each other with shrewd moves during the series, and the scoreboard has tipped dramatically with each change. Oklahoma City came up with the first major lineup changes in Game 3. Defensive wiz Serge Ibaka returned to Oklahoma Citys starting lineup after suffering what was thought to be a season-ending left calf strain and Reggie Jackson moved into the starting lineup to help the Thunder win Game 3, 107-96, and Game 4, 105-92. In Game 5 in San Antonio, the Spurs decision to go with perimeter-shooting post players alongside Tim Duncan helped the teams floor spacing, and the Spurs rolled to a 117-89 win. Matt Bonner got his first start of the season, and his presence helped Duncan get off to a fast start. Boris Diaw started the second half and scored seven points in the third quarter to help the Spurs take a 20-point lead at the end of the period. Popovichs move forced Ibaka, the leagues leading shot blocker during the regular season, away from the basket, and the Spurs perimeter players had an easier time getting to the hoop. “The adjustments that the coaches made were very efficient tonight,” Diaw said after the game. “We tried to space the floor a little more. We came back to the way we were aggressive in the first two games. Going from good to great. Thats what Pop has asked all year, thats what weve been doing all year.” When Brooks was asked if he might start Ibaka at centre to prevent the Spurs from pulling him away from the basket, Brooks ruled nothing out. “Anythings possible,” he said. “We just have to, whoever we put out there, we just have to play better.” Thunder forward Kevin Durant said lineup changes, though important, are secondary to effort. He said Oklahoma City did not play with enough intensity in Game 5. “Schemes and Xs and Os, it all goes out the door,” he said. “Weve just got to play harder. They did last game, so weve got to match up.” Brooks said the key for Oklahoma City is defence. San Antonio has shot at least 50 per cent from the field in all three of its wins. If the Thunder dont get stops, they cant get into their dangerous fast break attack. “We know their plays, they know our plays, and we just have to be able to execute with maximum effort to give ourselves a chance to get a stop,” Brooks said. “Thats what it comes down to.” The lineup changes have coincided with venue changes. The home teams have won every game in the series by at least nine points, and by an average of 20.4 per game. Popovich was at a loss to explain why the series has played out this way. “It seems like the home team each time looks to have the greater passion or physicality,” he said. “Thats hard to measure because both teams want to win just as bad as the other.” Durant said the effort must be there Saturday night or the trend of home blowouts — and Oklahoma Citys season — will end. “We know that its a situation where we lose, we go home, and nobody wants to do that, so we just leave it all out there and whatever happens we live with,” Durant said. “Most of the time when we play extremely hard, play well, play together, we come out on top.” whole… nfl jerseys . Poyets immediate challenge is to produce Sunderlands first victory in the league, with the northeast club bottom with just one point from seven matches. “Trust me, believe, connect with the team,” Poyet said after signing a two-year contract. United on Saturday night and boost the Unions playoff hopes. Nick DeLeon scored in the 36th minute for United (3-23-6), which had ample opportunities to build on its lead but went its 10th straight match without a victory. According to a report from ESPN, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers are shopping the veteran CB and plan on releasing him Wednesday if they cant find a trade partner.TORONTO – The Toronto Blue Jays will try to capture a second straight game versus the rival New York Yankees with Mark Buehrle set to take the hill Tuesday in the middle portion of a three-game home series. With a win tonight, Buehrle will match Yankees ace Masahiro Tanaka for the most wins in the majors with 11. Buehrle is 10-4 with a 2.32 earned run average, but has lost his last three starts, including a 7-3 setback at Yankee Stadium last Wednesday. Buehrle allowed three runs — two earned — and six hits in six innings. He has served up a home run in each of his previous three starts and hasnt fared too well in his career against New York, going 1-11 with a 5.84 ERA in 17 starts. Buehrle is 5-2 in seven starts at home this season. The Blue Jays returned home to start a nine-game stay and kicked off the residency with Mondays 8-3 victory over the Yanks. Adam Lind hit a three-run homer during a six-run second inning and finished with four RBI, while Edwin Encarnacion collected three hits. Marcus Stroman pitched well to pick up the win and limited the Yankees to a run and three hits in eight innings with seven strikeouts and one walk. &quuot;Actually getting going was fine, its the slowing down," Stroman said.dddddddddddd Toronto is 1 1/2 games ahead of Baltimore and 2 1/2 in front on New York for the AL East lead and will also host the Chicago White Sox and Milwaukee Brewers on this homestand. The Jays, who won for the second time in the last seven tries, are 21-17 as the host. The Yankees have lost three in a row since winning four straight and didnt get much help from Chase Whitley on the mound last night. Whitley was tagged for eight runs and 11 hits in 3 1/3 innings. “I couldnt command the ball at all,” Whitley said. “I couldnt execute the pitches I wanted to throw.” Mark Teixeira homered for the Yankees. Taking the mound for New York Tuesday will be David Phelps. Phelps is 3-4 with a 3.86 ERA and has won back-to-back outings after losing the previous four. In a 6-4 triumph over the Blue Jays last Thursday, Phelps delivered seven innings of two-run ball, struck out seven and walked two. Phelps, a right-hander, is 3-0 with a 3.96 ERA in nine career games (4 starts) against Toronto. The Yankees are 5-2 against the Blue Jays this season.
