Téma: Jak postupovat / ames and sit a ha CORTINA DAMPEZZO, Italy — Overall World Cup leader Maria Hoefl-Riesch won a shortened downhill Friday and established herself as the favourite to take away two of Lindsey Vonns titles. Hoefl-Riesch took full command of the downhill standings that the injured Vonn dominated for the past six years and improved her status as the favourite for the womens downhill at the Sochi Olympics on Feb. 12 — the race Vonn won at the 2010 Vancouver Games. “The downhill globe is a big goal for me,” Hoefl-Riesch said. "The last years it was always impossible because Lindsey was so strong. I already was skiing strong in the last years but there was never a chance, because I was not consistent enough on every single track like Lindsey. “And of course I would love to win the Olympic downhill,” Hoefl-Riesch said. “Thats the biggest race in skiing.” Julia Roth of Waterloo, Ont., was 44th. Larisa Yurkiw of Owen Sound, Ont., did not start the first run. With her parents and husband in attendance, Hoefl-Riesch won in 1 minute, 17.84 seconds on the Olympia delle Tofane course for the 27th World Cup victory of her career. “I knew that I had to attack a lot with a shortened course and that it would be very tight,” Hoefl-Riesch said. “It was really flat light and tricky in a few turns where some girls had big problems. But not me.” Hoefl-Riesch said that she tweaked her left knee while landing a jump and that she felt some pain but was not overly concerned. Tina Weirather of Liechtenstein finished second, 0.31 seconds behind, and Nicole Schmidhofer of Austria was third with the No. 39 bib, 0.75 behind. Lara Gut of Switzerland was fourth and Stacey Cook of the United States was fifth as the pair missed out on the podium by 0.01 and 0.03 seconds, respectively. It was the best result this season for Cook, who finished second in two downhills in Lake Louise, Alberta, last season. The victory gave Hoefl-Riesch an 85-point lead over Weirather in the downhill standings after six of eight races, with wins worth 100 points each. In the overall standings, Hoefl-Riesch leads Weirather by 158 points. Hoefl-Rieschs other two wins this season also came in downhill, in Lake Louise. She also has podium results in slalom, super-combined and super-G and credits part of her all-around success to Hermann Maiers former physical trainer, Heinrich Bergmueller, who she began working with in the off-season. “I was also training hard the summers before but its a new way with a new coach and some things are different,” she said. “I feel much stronger this year and with my recovery for all disciplines.” Vonn ended her season recently to tend to her right knee, which she first injured in a horrific crash at last years world championships in Schladming, Austria. Hoefl-Riesch is friendly with Vonn but she wasnt about to take anything away from her own success just because her rival is out now. “Thats skiing,” said Hoefl-Riesch, who had four serious injuries in 2005. “I was not at the Olympic Games in 2006 and no one was asking the winner of the medals there if they miss me. So a medal is a medal and a title is a title, no matter who is competing and who is not.” Vonn used to spend Christmas at Hoefl-Rieschs home in Garmisch-Partenkirchen and they remain in contact. “We were just writing a little on WhatsApp a little bit,” Hoefl-Riesch said. “I think shes doing OK and I hope that we can talk on the phone before I go to Sochi.” Due to overnight snow and difficulty preparing the course, the start was delayed for half an hour and the course was shortened slightly — chopping off about 20 seconds of racing. With softer snow and flat light, it was a sharp change in conditions from Wednesdays only training run, which was held under bright sunshine. Conditions improved for later starters as a tailwind moved in. The wind helped Schmidhofer, whose only other podium finish also came in Cortina, having finished second in a super-G last year. “I was hoping for a tailwind,” Schmidhofer said, before she addressed her chances of being selected for Sochi. “I hope the coaches look at my result.” The revised start put skiers directly into the courses best-known section, the Tofane schuss — a long straightaway between two high rock outcroppings. “I generally do OK when there are straight shots out of the gate like that,” Cook said. “So that was a little confidence booster to kick out of the gate, get on my skis and not have to do too much and then get into it. And then I just tried to not ski a perfect line but ski perfect body position and really attacking. And it seems to have been fast.” Elisabeth Goergl, the Austrian who won a super-G on Thursday, lost control after hitting a gate and slammed into the safety padding at full speed. But she got right back up, skied down and said she was not injured. Another downhill is scheduled for Saturday, followed by a second super-G on Sunday to round out a series of four races in four days. Two of the races were originally scheduled for last weekend in Cortina but were wiped out due to heavy snowfall. The other two were moved from Garmisch due to a lack of snow in the German resort. Téma: Jak postupovat / victory over the Uni INDIANAPOLIS – Robert Mathis and Reggie Wayne have seen Peyton Mannings high-flying act. As longtime teammates, they played a part in Mannings gaudy stats, record-breaking quests and even the distracting pursuits of perfection. This week, as outsiders, they will put all that inside knowledge to use as Andrew Luck and the Colts try to derail Manning and the unbeaten Broncos. Watch the game live on TSN tonight. Coverage begins with Football Night in America at 7pm et/4pm pt. “Youve got try to rattle him as much as you can,” Mathis said. Its never been easy for a veteran team like the Patriots to do, and it wont be any simpler for Lucks young Colts (4-2), who have never been through a week quite like this. Mannings return to Indy has been hyped 24/7, helped along by Denver coach John Foxs criticism and the ensuing media outcry over comments made by Colts owner Jim Irsay — comments that were virtually identical to what he had been saying for months. There has been curiosity over how long and exactly what the Colts will do to honour Manning during pregame festivities. And, of course, everyone wants to know what will be going through Mannings masterful mind as he suits up in Lucas Oil Stadiums visiting locker room for the first time. “For me to predict, I just cant give you an answer,” Manning said, a tactful attempt to deflect attention from himself. “I guess Ill know a little more after the game.” What Wayne and Mathis know better than most is how good Manning can be. Nobody has thrown more touchdown passes through six games (22) and no quarterback since 1950 has produced more double-digit winning streaks. Manning has officially done it five times, six when counting the four-game playoff run that led to his only Super Bowl title, a string the league does not count. Denvers 17-game winning streak is tied for the fourth longest in NFL history. Not long ago, Manning was doing all this in Indy. Colts fans remember his record-breaking 2004 season with 49 TD passes, and Mathis and Wayne played key roles in Indys league-record 23-game winning streak led by Manning in 2008-09. They were also around for the 13-0 start in 2005 when Indys average winning margin was 16.3 points. Its different this time. Mannings Broncos (6-0) are on pace to shatter the NFLs single-season scoring record and, fair or not, many will watch Sunday nights game to see whether Luck can live up to the standards Manning established. But if Mathis and Wayne learned anything from Manning, its this: forget the sideshows. “Its a big game to us just because every game is a big game. Were coming off a loss. We really feel like we didnt display our talents the way we should have last week,” Wayne said. “We get another opportunity to change that over, to kind of change some thoughts in peoples minds. … Im just ready to play.” Here are five things to watch Sunday night: HEAD GAMES: Mannings ability to call plays at the line of scrimmage is second to none. Wayne, Mathis and Antoine Bethea saw Manning do it in practice and on games days for nearly a decade. Colts coach Chuck Pagano plans to take advantage of that expertise this weekend, but its unclear how much it will help. Wayne told reporters this week that his insights would be irrelevant because Manning would “change it anyway.” But watching the mind games between Manning and his ex-teammates should be one of the nights more intriguing matchups. NO. 1 vs. NO. 1: The Luck-Manning showdown will be the feature attraction of Week 7, and with good reason. This is the first time in the common draft era that two quarterbacks drafted No. 1 overall by the same franchise played for that team and later met in a game. John Elway and Jeff George were also taken No. 1 overall by the Colts and squared off four times, but Elway was traded to Denver without ever playing for the Colts. Manning and Luck also happen be two of the leagues best. KEEPING UP WITH THE BRONCOS: Denvers 44.2 points per game translates into more than 700 points over the 16-game schedule. At that rate, most opponents will be forced into playing catch-up. The trick for Indy will be controlling the ball. As the Colts have repeatedly said, they want this team to be more balanced between run and pass, and the addition of Trent Richardson should help that transformation. If the Colts control the clock, they could control the game. FINAL IMPRESSIONS: Everybody knows about Mannings late-game heroics. But Luck has been every bit as good since coming into the league last season. His seventh fourth-quarter comebacks in 2012 set a rookie record and were tied for the most by any quarterback since 1970. Luck has produced two more fourth-quarter rallies this season, and this time hes getting some help from the defence, which has allowed just 13 points in the fourth quarter of the first six games. HOME, SWEET, HOME: Indy has traditionally been one of the leagues best home teams, and Luck has only added to the reputation by going 9-2 since last season. But Manning has been every bit as comfortable at Lucas Oil Stadium, which many credit him for getting the funding to build. Manning was 19-5 at the retractable-roof stadium from 2008-10, and until last season, one of the Manning quarterbacks had won in Indy every season since 1998 (Eli won the Super Bowl in Indy after the 2011 season when Peyton sat out the year). Could it happen this weekend? Stay tuned. ___ AP NFL website: http://pro32.ap.org/poll c… jerseys from china . Ivanovic was leading 7-5, 1-0 when Hantuchova withdrew after falling 0-40 behind in the second game. The match started slowly for Ivanovic, who surrendered her first two serves as Hantuchova took a 5-3 lead. But Ivanovic won the next four games to secure the set, winning the ninth game at love with her final three serves being aces. “She started really well, and I managed to get back into the set and break her back,” Ivanovic said. “I played some really good tennis towards the end of that first set and then in the second.” Wildcard entrant Alisa Kleybanova of Russia also advanced after her opponent retired. At 5-5 in the first set, 10th-seeded Dominika Cibulkova of Slovak Republic, the recent Australian Open finalist, retired from the match with a gastrointestinal illness. “I was really looking forward to playing this week in Doha,” said Cibulkova, who was making her first tournamment appearance since becoming the first Slovakian to reach a Grand Slam final.dddddddddddd “Unfortunately I became very sick today and suddenly did not feel well. I wanted to give it a try today and I did everything I could to try to play, but I could not continue.” Karin Knapp, who led Italy to a 3-1 Fed Cup victory over the United States in Cleveland at the weekend, was told she had to be in Doha to play a first round match on Tuesday. Knapp started her journey early Monday morning and after going from Cleveland to Washington DC, and then to Dubai, she landed in Doha on Tuesday in time to play her afternoon match. Knapp played impressive tennis to defeat Caroline Garcia of France 6-4, 6-1 straight off the plane. Four players who chose to skip playing the Fed Cup tie between the U.S. and Italy in order to get to Doha early — Sloane Stephens, Francesca Schiavone, Roberta Vinci and Flavia Pennetta — have all lost their first round matches. The six-time Pro Bowl player and 2011 Walter Payton Award winner as the leagues man of the year spent the 2013 season as an NFL-NFLPA appeals officer. In his new role, Birk will be involved in administration of game-day operations, oversee the further development of the scouting combine and regional combines, as well as the Senior Bowl and East-West Shrine game for college players. “Im very excited to begin this next chapter of my football career,” Birk said. “Its a real honour for me to be entrusted with developing the game in so many different ways.” Birk becomes the eighth former player to take a job at the NFL executive offices, joining Merton Hanks, Dwight Hollier, Patrick Kerney, James Thrash, David Tyree, Troy Vincent and Charles Way. Vincent is the leagues top executive for football operations. “Matts experience as a terrific NFL player, a model citizen in his community and a reputation as a forward-thinking leader make him ideally suited for this role,” Vincent said. Two people familiar with discussions confirmed Milsteins interest as a prospective owner and keeping the franchise in western New York. The people spoke to The Associated Press on Thursday on the condition of anonymity because Milstein hasnt publicly revealed his intentions. Citing an unnamed person, Buffalos WGRZ-TV first named Milstein as an ownership candidate earlier in the day. The Bills, last valued at $870 million, will be put on the market following the death of owner Ralph Wilson in March. The sale process wont begin until Wilsons estate hires an investment banking firm to put an updated value on the franchise and oversee negotiations. New York City developer Donald Trump and Bills Hall of Fame quarterback Jim Kelly have already expressed interest in buying the team. The family of Boston Bruins owner Jeremy Jacobs hasnt ruled out becoming involved in an ownership group. And New Jersey rocker Jon Bon Jovi has been linked to — but has no formal ties — with Toronto-based developer Larry Tanenbaum, who is interested in purchasing an NFL franchise and moving it to Toronto. Milstein has previous sports ownership ties to the NHLs New York Islanders and made a failed bid to purchase the NFLs Washington Redskins. He also has connections to the Buffalo region and Gov. Andrew Cuomo. He currently serves as chairman of the New York State Thruway Authority. And Milstein controls an undeveloped 142-acre plot of land in downtown Niagara Falls that has been mentioned as a potential site for a new Bills stadium. Milstein would face obstacles in purchasing the Bills because of a spotty history in previous ownership bids. Milstein, his brother and Edward Milstein and Steven Gluckstern co-owned the Islanderrs from 1998-2000 before selling the team to Charles Wang.dddddddddddd The Milstein/Gluckstern ownership tenure was filled with controversy over the conditions of the Islanders home, Nassau Coliseum. And the owners alienated the fan base by threatening to move the Islanders and openly discussing having the team play some home games in other arenas. In 1999, Milstein withdrew a bid to purchase the Redskins after failing to get support from a majority of NFL owners. Some owners said he was using too much borrowed money to finance the deal, while others worried that he would be a maverick owner because of his contentious stewardship of the Islanders. The Redskins were eventually sold to Milsteins junior partner Dan Snyder. Milstein filed and lost a $20 million arbitration grievance accusing Snyder of breaching their joint ownership agreement. Wilsons widow, Mary Wilson, has taken over as the Bills controlling owner until the franchise is sold. There is no shortage of other potential candidates. Erie County deputy executive Richard Tobe has said hes been approached by as many as 10 groups interested in the Bills. The Bills are essentially locked into playing at Ralph Wilson Stadium through the 2019 season because of a strict non-relocation clause included in a 10-year lease agreement reached with the state and county in December 2012. The Bills would incur a $400 million penalty by even broaching the prospect of moving during the leases term. There is a one-time exception that would allow the Bills to break the lease for just under $28.4 million in 2020. “They cant even plan to break this lease without being in breach,” said Tobe, who represented the county in negotiations. Tobe added the lease essentially prevents the Bills estate from selling the team to any group considering relocating the team before 2023. Latos had to leave a minor league rehab start after only 67 pitches on Wednesday night at Triple-A Louisville because he developed a cramp in a calf. The Reds were planning to have him throw approximately 100 pitches and then activate him if there was no problem. The club still hadnt talked to Latos on Thursday morning. Manager Bryan Price said no decision had been made on whether another rehab start is needed to get Latos ready to throw 100 pitches in the majors. “Its under consideration what we want to do, whether we want to activate him or give him one more start to get stretched out,” Price said. Latos went 14-7 last season with a 3.16 ERA in 32 starts. He had surgery after the season to have a bone chip removed from his elbow. He tore cartilage in his left knee while working out and had surgery the day that spring training opened. He was beyond the knee problems when he developed soreness in his pitching foorearm and had to rest again.dddddddddddd Price said the latest setback doesnt seem to be serious. “He may have wanted to stay in (the game), but it was apparent that its something he shouldnt be pitching with,” Price said. "Hes getting closer and closer to rejoining the club. It was disappointing that he didnt get up to the innings and the pitch limit that wed set. “So hell be in later today and well reassess the severity of it. It doesnt sound like its really an issue.” Right-hander Alfredo Simon has gone 7-3 in Latos spot. Simon could move back into the bullpen when Latos returns, or the Reds could decide to move left-hander Tony Cingrani into a relief role. Téma: Jak postupovat / ics snapped a season- NEW YORK — Ben Scrivens made 37 saves in his second consecutive shutout, and Tyler Toffolis second-period goal held up as the winner as the Los Angeles Kings completed a successful Eastern road trip with a 1-0 victory over the New York Rangers on Sunday night. Dominic Moore thought he tied it with 2:41 remaining, but the goal was disallowed because he kicked it in with his right skate. Scrivens, filling in for injured regular Jonathan Quick, followed up a blanking of the New Jersey Devils on Friday with one against the Rangers. Los Angeles went 3-0-1 on the trip, winning the final three games. Scrivens has gone 156 minutes, 2 seconds without allowing a goal over three games since Aaron Ness of the New York Islanders scored in the second period of the Kings 3-2 win on Thursday. Los Angeles is 5-0-1 in its last six. Henrik Lundqvist stopped 29 shots in the hard-luck loss. The Rangers, 7-3 in their last 10, failed to follow up on their 1-0 win at Montreal on Saturday with backup Cam Talbot in net. New York dropped its second straight at home. Scrivens best stop came six minutes into the third period when his right arm stopped Mats Zuccarellos shot off a rebound in front. Toffoli broke the scoreless deadlock 1:23 into the second period with his fourth goal in just seven NHL games this season. Toffoli, who netted the winning goal late in regulation against the Islanders, cashed in again with some help from the Rangers. The 21-year-old centre spun and fired a shot from above the circles. Lundqvist slid to his right to get into position to make the save, but the puck hit the skate of New York defenceman Anton Stralman and caromed to Lundqvists left and into the vacated part of the net. Lundqvist thrust backward in the crease in disbelief and disgust as the Kings celebrated. The Kings needed a break to get a puck past Lundqvist, who appeared sharp after getting a game off. He kept the Rangers in it as Los Angeles held a 10-2 shots edge in the first half of the second period. During an extended flurry in front, Lundqvist made several in-close saves and was bailed out when one drive struck the left post behind him. The Rangers certainly had their chances at the other end against Scrivens, but he was also up to the task. New York had back-to-back scoring opportunities while short-handed, including a 2-on-1 break that failed to produce a shot. Then the Kings were called for three consecutive penalties midway through the second — including a call for too many men on the ice and another for delay of game — but New York couldnt take advantage despite having a pair of abbreviated 5-on-3 power plays. The Rangers goal at Montreal on Saturday was scored during a 5-on-3 advantage. NOTES: Scrivens has three shutouts this season and five in three NHL seasons. … Toffoli has eight points and three game-winning goals. … Rangers D Michael Del Zotto was a healthy scratch for the second straight game. New York went with 6-foot-5 defenceman Justin Falk against the big Kings lineup. … New York LW Rick Nash missed his 17th game due to a concussion but is eyeing a return in the upcoming week. … New York RW Derek Dorsett played in his 300th NHL game. … Mike Richards, who assisted on Toffolis goal, has 10 points in seven games and 13 in 12 contests. Téma: Jak postupovat / seys/]www.cheapnfljersey Wayne Rooney is about to be the highest-paid player in English football. According to various reports, the striker is about to sign a five-and-a-half year extension with Manchester United worth a reported 300,000 pounds a week that would see him at Old Trafford until 2019. The 28-year-old England international came over to United from Everton in 2004. Though a five-time Premier League champion and Champions League-winner with the club, Rooneys time with United has not gone without its controversy. In August of 2010, Rooney released a statement questioning the Red Devils ambition and declaring his intent to leave the club. Only days later in a dramatic turn of events, Rooney signed a contract extension. Towards the end of last season, Sir Alex Ferguson claimed that Rooney had submitted a transfer request and speculation grew about Rooneys future with the arrival of David Moyes at Old Trafford, Rooneys former manager at Everton with whom he shared a frosty relationship. Although, Rooney denied that he wanted out, he was linked for a majority of the summer with a move to rivals Chelsea. By the beginning of the season, Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho delcared his pursuit of the striker dead. Téma: Jak postupovat / for him to be used pr ATLANTA — Jeff Teague had a career-high 33 points and 10 assists, Al Horford added 20 points and the Atlanta Hawks beat the Philadelphia 76ers 113-103 on Friday night. DeMarre Carroll finished with a career-high 21 points for Atlanta, which has won three of four. Evan Turner scored 27 points, Tony Wroten had 22 points, and Spencer Hawes finished with 14 points and 12 rebounds for the Sixers, who have lost three of four. Hawks guard Lou Williams, returning to the court for the first time since undergoing reconstructive right knee surgery 10 months ago, finished with seven points, three rebounds and two assists in 15 minutes. Williams, in his second season with Atlanta, received a rousing cheer when he entered the game midway through the first quarter. Atlanta coach Mike Budenholzer said before the game that Williams, who spent his first seven seasons with the Sixers, will not play on consecutive nights. The Hawks visit the New York Knicks on Saturday. Budenholzer decided to bring forward Paul Millsap, Atlantas second-leading scorer this season, off the bench, and he finished with eight points. Gustavo Ayon started in his season debut, finishing with six points. Teague wove through the lane to feed Millsap for a dunk that made it 103-94 with 3:01 left. The Sixers were without second-leading scorer Michael Carter-Williams because of a bruised arch in his left foot. Carter-Williams missed his second straight game. The rookie was injured Monday in a home loss to San Antonio and is travelling with the team, but coach Brett Brown said he doubts the former Syracuse standout will play Saturday at New Orleans or Monday at Dallas. Wroten, a second-year veteran starting in Carter-Williams spot, has done well in the guards absence. He had 18 points, 11 rebounds and 10 assists in his first career start, a home win over Houston on Wednesday. Hawks guard Kyle Korver hit a 3 in his 82nd consecutive game. Its the NBAs second career-leading streak and eight shy of breaking Dana Barros 17-year-old record. Korver finished with 13 points. Thaddeus Young had 17 points for Philadelphia. The Hawks biggest lead before halftime was 11 on Williams 3 in the final seconds of the first quarter, but Philadelphia had a two-point lead at intermission after Darius Morris hit a 3 with 2.5 seconds left and Carroll hit a 3 at the buzzer. Williams 8-foot runner lifted Atlanta to an 82-71 lead with 31.1 seconds left in the third. Philadelphia came within four on Hollis Thompsons dunk early in the fourth, but Brown called timeout with 7:39 remaining after Ayon caught Teagues alley-oop for a layup that made it 90-79. The pitchers agent, Bob Garber, confirmed the decision and said Oswalt would go to work for his agency, RMG Baseball. Oswalt will be vice-president of baseball operations. “Roy is now going to be representing players with me,” Garber said Tuesday night. “Hes now an agent.” The 36-year-old right-hander had a 163-102 career record with a 3.36 ERA. Oswalt won 20 games in consecutive seasons (2004-05) with the Houston Astros and was the 2005 NL championship series MVP. He pitched more than 200 innings seven times but was hampered by injuries in recent years. “He was a tremendous competitor,” Giants right-hander Matt Cain said. “He was one of the guys I always loved to watch pitch. I remember facing him for the first time and I knew if I gave up more than a couple runs that it wasnt going to be a good day for us. He went about his business every fifth day like a true pro.” Oswalt got hurt with Houston on June 11, 2003, when he and five other pitchers combined to no-hit the New York Yankees in an 8-0 victory in the Bronx. It was the only six-pitcher no-hitter until Seattle did the same thing against the Dodgers on June 8, 2012. Oswalt strained his right groin and left in the second. He looked toward catcher Brad Ausmus after his second pitch of the inning, his 23rd of the game, and immediately was replaced. The Yankees had gone 6,980 games — the longest streak in major league history — without being no-hit, since Hoyt Wilhelms 1-0 victory for Baltimore on Seppt.dddddddddddd 20, 1958. Oswalt was 0-6 with an 8.63 ERA in nine outings and six starts for Colorado last year. He signed a minor league deal with the Rockies in May 2013 and missed time with a strained left hamstring. Texas Rangers manager Ron Washington was thrilled to acquire Oswalt in the middle of the 2012 season, when he went 4-3 with a 5.80 ERA in 17 appearances with nine starts. He joined the Rangers on June 22, 2012, but didnt know if the team just planned to trade him away. Washington often said Oswalt “has been a pro” in handling a tough, unclear situation that called for him to be used primarily out of the bullpen. That was after Oswalt spent two stints on the disabled list during 2011 with Philadelphia because of lower back inflammation. He went 9-10 with a 3.69 ERA in 23 starts for the Phillies that year, and his 139 innings were his fewest since 2003. He didnt go more than 59 innings in his last two years. A 23rd-round pick by Houston in the 1996 amateur draft, Oswalt pitched his first nine-plus seasons for the Astros (2001-10) and then played for Philadelphia (2010-11), Texas (2012) and the Rockies (2013). On Aug. 25, 2010, Oswalt became the first Phillies pitcher to play a position in the field in 39 years after Ryan Howard was ejected in the 14th inning of a 4-2, 16-inning home loss to the Astros. With the Phillies out of position players, Oswalt went to left field and Raul Ibanez took over at first for Howard. Oswalt drew a rousing ovation from the crowd when he caught a routine fly ball. He was the first Philadelphia pitcher to play a position since Bill Wilson on Aug. 6, 1971. Téma: Jak postupovat / Lucic scored late in t MIAMI — LeBron James says his new protective mask is hot, uncomfortable and prone to fogging up. Plus, as teammate Dwyane Wade pointed out, it looks weird. So James is in the market for design suggestions. “Ive been talking to Marvel Comics for the last couple of days, and DC Comics, to try to come up with one of the greatest masks of all time,” James said with a chuckle Wednesday. “So well see what happens.” James spoke after trying out his new mask for the first time in practice. He plans to use it Thursday when the Miami Heat play the New York Knicks. The game will be the first for James since he broke his nose last Thursday in a victory at Oklahoma City. He and his mask took part in contact drills Wednesday, and coach Erik Spoelstra was encouraged by James progress. “Hell give it a shot Thursday,” Spoelstra said. “He was able to go through today without any hiccups. But he also didnt take a hit today.” Given James aggressive style of play, hes bound to receive an inadvertent blow to the face sooner or later. Thus the mask. “It lessens the impact,” said James, who wore a mask 10 years ago to protect a broken cheek. “You can still feel it, because the nose is still tender. But it definitely lessens the pain.” James had removed his clear mask by the time media were admitted to the gym for the end of practice, but teammates provided a description. “He looked like every other player in a mask — it looks weird,” Wade said. “He looks like the LeBron that wore a mask the first time, only about 30 pounds heavier, a little more muscular, a little less hair.” Said Shane Battier with a grin: “As long as No. 6 is in uniform, he looks all right to me.” James was on a roll when hurt. On Thursday hell try for his fifth consecutive 30-point game, which would be the second-longest such streak in Heat history. The Heat have won five consecutive games and trail Eastern Conference leader Indiana by one game. But theyve been prone to stumble against weak opponents, and their next three games are at home against team with losing records — the Knicks, Magic and Bobcats. Nine of the Heats 14 defeats, including one against the Knicks, have come versus teams that are below .500. “You dont want to lose to the good teams. And you dont want to lose to the teams that arent as good,” Wade said. “So then you would be 82-0. Youve got to lose to somebody. You cant play your A game for 82 games, so you have some of those moments. It happens to every team. Were no different.” Lately the two-time defending NBA champions have been consistently on their A game, in part because of stout defence. They held Oklahoma City to 81 points, which tied the Thunders season low, then held Chicago to 79 in a victory Sunday as an antsy James watched from the bench. The injury-plagued Knicks have lost their past three games, and in their season of upheaval, the latest jarring development came Tuesday. Point guard Raymond Felton was arraigned on two felony weapons possession charges following an early-morning arrest. After going 54-28 last season, the Knicks are 21-36. “They havent forgotten how to play,” Spoelstra said. “Theyve been injury-riddled all year long, and thats tough to deal with. That adversity coming into our game is irrelevant. Im sure theyll be ready.” The Knicks split two games earlier this season against Miami, and theyre one of the few teams with a player who can match James basket for basket. Carmelo Anthony has scored more than 40 points in three of the past four games. James said hes sorry to see his friend endure such a difficult season in the standings. “I want him to win, and I want him to succeed,” James said. “Obviously he has been playing great basketball, but I definitely dont like seeing him lose the way theyve been losing.” cheap jerseys . Téma: Jak postupovat / its going to be two t SOCHI, Russia — Six workers fell off a roof Thursday at the bobsled centre for the upcoming Winter Olympics in Sochi when the snow they were clearing slid to the ground. Associated Press technicians who witnessed the fall said one of the men appeared to have injured a leg and was taken away on a stretcher, while others sustained minor injuries. The men were clearing snow at the Sanki Sliding Center, which will host the bobsled and luge events at next months games in the Russian Black Sea city. The AP technicians said the workers appeared to have been harnessed to the building, but were swept down with the snow. They estimated the roof was 10 metres high. The building is where the mens bobsled runs will start. Security officers who arrived at the scene ordered the AP staffers to stop taking photographs with their phones, and briefly seized one of the devices. Thats because a 21-metre-high banner of Austin hangs outside the stadium, which is home to the Saskatchewan Roughriders football club. Its a tribute to the quarterback who guided the Riders to the 1989 Grey Cup championship and was head coach when the green and white clinched the title in 2007. Austin left the Roughriders after the championship win and spent five years in the U.S. college ranks before becoming Hamiltons head coach and general manager last December. Saskatchewan spoiled Austins return to Regina in the regular season with a 37-0 win over the Ticats in July. But Riders head coach Corey Chamblin says the Ticats are “a totally different team” now and Saskatchewan cant take anything for granted in the Grey Cup on Sunday. “Thats the thing about it, its a very fresh challenge for us. Everythings brand new,” Chamblin said at a news conference Tuesday. “They do so many different things from when we played them early in the season. Theyve totally changed…a lot of things that theyve done and Im sure (they think) the same thing when they look at us on film, so itll be a fresh game and itll be one of those where therell be a lot of adjustments throughout the course of that game.” Chamblin says one of the things the Riders did in the off season was look at how many coaching changes other teams had and try to catch them off guard early on. But he says Hamilton has grown together and gelled as a team. Hamilton heads into the Grey Cup game on a roll, having won 11 of its last 15 games, including last weeks East Division final against 2012 Grey Cupp champion Toronto.dddddddddddd Chamblin, who spent the 2011 season as Hamiltons defensive co-ordinator before becoming the Riders head coach in 2012, says he doesnt see the game as a head-to-head challenge between coaches. “I enjoy that I dont get the storylines he does, that puts more pressure on Kent,” joked Chamblin. “No, right now its the Hamilton Tiger-Cats versus the Saskatchewan Roughriders. I never make it an individual battle or anything like that. Kents a very good coach and hes done a very good job with his football team. The same here.” “Ultimately its going to be two teams play in the Grey Cup,” he added. Riders quarterback Darian Durant agrees that they are preparing to face a completely different team, including his former Saskatchewan teammate and friend Andy Fantuz. “Those guys, there were missing some pieces when we played them earlier. You know, they had a bunch of young guys who were new to the CFL, didnt know the game as much and now, theyre basically veterans,” Durant said at Mosaic Stadium. “They went on the road and they beat the defending Grey Cup champions, which says a lot, so you definitely have to make sure youre ready and prepared for those guys.” The last time Saskatchewan and Hamilton faced each other in the Grey Cup was in 1989, when Austin was the quarterback. Saskatchewan won 43-40 with a last-second field goal from Dave Ridgway. Durant is getting help from Saskatchewan offensive co-ordinator George Cortez, who was the head coach and director of football operations for the Hamilton Tiger-Cats last season. The Grey Cup will also be a homecoming of sorts for Hamilton quarterback Henry Burris, who is a former Rider. So it was understandable if he was a little shaky early in his return to the Texas Rangers rotation. He spent most of the outing searching for his best stuff, but still managed to shut down the struggling Minnesota Twins offence. Saunders pitched five scoreless innings and Luis Sardinas drove in the only run of the game to lift the Rangers to a 1-0 victory over the Twins on Wednesday night. “It was a battle for the first time coming back in almost two months,” Saunders said. “It was a struggle, but I made some good pitches, got some clutch strikeouts against some pretty good hitters and kept the team right where it needed to be.” Saunders gave up five hits and struck out six after being activated from the 15-day disabled list earlier in the day. “I had to take a step back there in the first inning, relax and calm the nerves a little bit,” Saunders said. “Its been a long time coming for me. Its the longest Ive ever been out. It was a good start.” Sardinas had a two-out single off struggling Twins reliever Jared Burton (1-2) in the seventh inning to help propel the Rangers to their seventh win in the past 10 games. Kyle Gibson gave up six hits and struck out four in six scoreless innings, but the Twins left nine runners on base and went 0 for 8 with runners in scoring position. Joe Mauer went 0 for 4. Shawn Tolleson (1-1) pitched 1 2-3 scoreless innings of relief for the win and Joakim Soria picked up his ninth save in 10 tries, one night after his error in the ninth inning led to his first blown save of the season. Saunders had only made one other start this season, but he took a line drive from Evan Longoria off his left ankle in his season debut on April 4. Saunders made four rehab starts and had his breaking ball working in his return to the Rangers rotation on Wednesday night. Saunders stranded seven baserunners, including getting Brian Dozier to fly out with the bases loadedd in the second.dddddddddddd With his pitch count at 97 after five innings, manager Ron Washington elected to go to the bullpen rather than push Saunders too hard in his first start back. “Hes a competitor and he had to compete tonight, especially early in the game when they couldve done some damage,” Washington said. Gibson was just as sharp, allowing just one extra-base hit and breezing through six. But he didnt get any help from a slumping offence that has scored just 10 runs in the past six games. Mauer had a chance in the seventh inning with the tying run on third base and two outs, but he chased a breaking ball for strike three and heard boos from a frustrated hometown fan base. Mauer is hitting .277 with 15 RBIs and six doubles on the season. “I feel pretty good actually, which is even more frustrating,” said Mauer, who has been dealing with a sore back for parts of the season. “Im hitting a lot of balls hard and just not having much to show for it. So hopefully that turns here soon. just got to try to have some good at bats, keep having good at-bats and hopefully they start falling.” Elvis Andrus was ejected in the sixth inning after he muttered something to home plate umpire Pat Hoberg regarding a low strike called earlier in his at-bat. It was the second ejection of the season for Andrus and Washington moved Sardinas from second base to shortstop and put Rougned Odor at second base to fill the hole. Téma: Jak postupovat / pendent panel created b ST. LOUIS – Its easy for one to imagine that when Red Sox manager John Farrell put head to pillow early Sunday morning, he was still stewing over a call made in the ninth inning late the night before. No, not the obstruction ruling that drew the curtain on a 5-4 Cardinals win, sending Busch Stadium into celebration as the hometown team took a 2-1 lead in the World Series. (Read about it here.) Instead, Farrell must be lamenting his decision in the top of the ninth inning to let a pitcher – a relief pitcher – hit with one out in a tie game. For reasons well discuss momentarily, Bostons bench had been reduced to Mike Napoli and David Ross. For two reasons, Ross doesnt factor into this conversation. One, hes the backup catcher and needed to be available in the event Jarrod Saltalamacchia was injured later in the game. Two, and most importantly, Ross is an inferior hitter to Napoli. Reliever Brandon Workman was Bostons fifth pitcher of the night and had worked the eighth. Jake Peavy, Felix Doubront, Craig Breslow and Junichi Tazawa had already been used. Koji Uehara, Ryan Dempster and Franklin Morales were, at the time, still in the bullpen. After Will Middlebrooks struck out to lead off the ninth, Farrell sent Workman up to hit. Workman, standing in the batters box against flame-throwing Cardinals right-hander Trevor Rosenthal, didnt stand a chance. He struck out on three pitches, Jacoby Ellsbury was quickly retired on a ground ball and the inning was over. Farrell had managed aggressively all night, the reason his bench had become short, but suddenly he went passive. The point isnt whether Napoli would have hit a home run to give Boston the lead or whether he would have gotten a hit to start a rally. The issue is Farrell, startlingly, decided to play for extra innings and save Napoli, one of his hottest hitters, for an at-bat not guaranteed to come. Farrell had wasted no time chasing starter Jake Peavy from the game. Down 2-0 in the top of the fifth and with runners on the corners and one out, Farrell pinch hit Mike Carp for Peavy. Carp grounded into an RBI fielders choice to get Boston on the board, a better result than Peavy likely would have had against hard-throwing Cardinals starter Joe Kelly. Good move, Farrell. In the seventh, with the game tied 2-2, Farrell pinch hit Will Middlebrooks for shortstop Stephen Drew. St. Louis had left-hander Kevin Siegrist pitching at the time and Drew, a left-handed hitter, has been as close as one can be to being an automatic out over the last month. The defensive alignment shifted as a result, with Middlebrooks entering the field at third base and Xander Bogaerts moving a few dozen feet to his left to assume shortstop duties. It was another completely acceptable move by Farrell. Farrell also had Jonny Gomes hit for reliever Felix Doubront in the seventh inning. An obvious move, youd think, except, of course, for what was to come. Unfortunately for Farrell, he got bit by the decision to move Bogaerts to shortstop. Matt Carpenter led off the Cardinals seventh with an infield hit. The ball wasnt hit hard but Bogaerts created a slow-developing play. First baseman David Ortiz, a designated hitter forced into the field by National League rules, couldnt corral the one-hop throw. Carpenter was aboard and would later score on a two-run double by Matt Holliday. Bogaerts is a natural shortstop and Farrell, obviously, trusts him enough at the position to put him there at a key time in a big game. The player didnt execute. You cant blame the manager for that. Reliever Craig Breslow was charged with the two seventh inning runs. He allowed the Carpenter single and also hit Carlos Beltran with a pitch that grazed the Cardinal outfielders left arm. Farrell went to right-hander Junichi Tazawa to face Holliday. Tazawa gave up the double. Again, the players didnt execute. There can be no fault found with Farrells strategy. After the Red Sox nicked the combination of Carlos Martinez and Rosenthal for two runs, to tie the game 4-4, in the top of the eighth, the Cardinals got a one out single from Kolten Wong with one out in the bottom half of the inning. Wong stole second with two outs and Carlos Beltran up. Farrell had Workman intentionally walk Beltran to get to the red hot Holliday. Holliday flew out. Gutsy move by Farrell but he must have liked the Workman/Holliday match up better than the Workman/Beltran showdown. It paid off. Farrell showed a keenness to work the National League style and he employed a proactive approach for most of the night. That was until he let Workman hit for himself instead of calling on Napoli. When Workman allowed a one out single to Yadier Molina in the bottom of the ninth, Farrell called for closer Koji Uehara, which begs the question, if Farrell was going to go to Uehara the moment Workman got in trouble, why didnt he just start the ninth with Uehara on the mound? Farrell played the role of wild gunslinger but then suddenly morphed into the shy guy in the corner. You cant play for extra innings when the home team has the opportunity to walk you off. To be fair, Farrell didnt cost his team the game. But as he laid his head on the pillow, the gunslinger surely must have recognized he left the ballpark with one bullet left unfired. The attacking midfielder arrives on a free transfer from Spains Malaga. The 28-year-old joins Scottish striker Kenny Miller and Argentine midfielder Matias Laba as designated players on the Whitecaps roster. Morales arrived in Vancouver on Tuesday night and was slated to train Wednesday with the Whitecaps. The Chilean spent the last two seasons in La Liga after spending three seasons in Croatia with GNK Dinamo Zagreb. Prior to that, Morales played five seasons in Chile. The five-foot-11, 170-pounder has represented his country 11 times, scoring three goals. The Whitecaps open the 2014 MLS season on Saturday against the visiting New York Red Bulls. Hoefl-Rieschs exit — from the downhill course into safety nets, then airlifted from the slope by helicopter — left Anna Fenninger of Austria favourite to win her first giant crystal trophy one month after becoming an Olympic champion.NEW ORLEANS — The Eastern Conference finally stopped Kevin Durant and Blake Griffin — then stopped its losing streak at the NBA All-Star game. Kyrie Irving had 31 points and 14 assists and was voted the games MVP, Carmelo Anthony made an All-Star record eight 3-pointers and scored 30 points, and the East rallied for a 163-155 victory over the West on Sunday night. “Its a great honour,” Irving said. “We had a few MVPs. Everyone out here today is an MVP.” Durant and Griffin each finished with 38 points, four shy of Wilt Chamberlains All-Star game record. But the East scored the final 10 points to pull out a game it trailed by 18. Irving scored 15 points in the fourth quarter as the East ended a three-game losing streak. LeBron James had 22 points, seven rebounds and seven assists. “The superstars of our league were just telling us to compete on every play,” Irving said. “Trying to play as much defence as possible. You know, sticking to our game plan. We had a game plan going in and we executed.” Griffin shot 19 of 23, while Durant finished with 10 rebounds and six assists. But the West was shut out after Durants 3-pointer gave it a 155-153 lead with 1:59 left. Indianas Paul George made three free throws, Anthony nailed his final 3-pointer, and James scored to make it 161-155. George closed it out with two more free throws and finished with 18 points. The game that usually doesnt get tight until the final minutes was close throughout the fourth quarter, neither team leading by more than four until the final minute. Chris Paul had 11 points and 13 assists, and first-time All-Star Stephen Curry had 12 points and 11 assists for the West. But the best point guard on the floor was Irving, who shot 14 of 17 and helped the East ring up 87 points in the second half after it surrendered a record 89 in the first. In a colorful tribute to New Orleans, players wore sneakers and socks that ranged from green and blue to orange and purple, making the game look like a Mardi Gras parade. The parade was one of layups and dunks for the West, which scored 44 points in the first quarter and 45 in the second.dddddddddddd. Griffin had 18 points in the first quarter and Durant had 22 at halftime, both two shy of records set by Glen Rice in 1997. And there was plenty of music, the rosters and starting lineups introduced around a concert by Pharrell Williams, who was joined by his own All-Stars in Nelly, Busta Rhymes, Sean “Diddy” Combs and Snoop Dogg. Magic Johnson led a band, too, encouraging the All-Stars to join him in singing “Happy Birthday” after the first quarter to Hall of Famer Bill Russell, the NBAs greatest champion who was celebrating his 80th. The All-Stars played better than they sang. The East finished with 61 per cent shooting, needing all sorts of offence after it simply couldnt defend Durant and Griffin. Durant made 6 3-pointers and easily blew past the 28.8 points he had been averaging in All-Star games, which was an NBA record. Outside of the ugly sleeved jerseys, it was a good look for the NBAs midseason showcase, bouncing back strongly from an even All-Star Saturday night. The new format of the slam dunk contest Saturday wasnt a hit, but every night is a dunk contest when Griffin is involved. The guy who once jumped over a car to win a slam dunk contest had eight slams in the first 11 minutes, the backboard often barely finished shaking from the last one when he threw down the next. The West began to open a gap in the second quarter behind a hometown star and a former one — Anthony Davis of the Pelicans for former New Orleans guard Paul. Durant made a 3-pointer with 26 seconds left to make it 89-76 at the break, one point better than he and the West had two years ago in Orlando. Durant and Griffin each had 30 points by the end of the third quarter, but the East trimmed what was a West 18-point lead to 126-123 after three. DeMar DeRozan of the Toronto Raptors made his first All-Star game appearance, and had eight points in his 15 minutes of playing time for the East. Téma: Jak postupovat / period. Mark Sim SALT LAKE CITY — The stage was all set Saturday night for Jimmer Fredette, in a state where “Jimmermania” had taken hold. Instead of draining what could have been a game-winning three-pointer for Sacramento with 4.2 seconds left, the former Brigham Young star launched an air ball. The Utah Jazz hung on for a 96-93 win over the Kings to snap a two-game losing streak. “Im not going to say whether I got fouled or not,” said Fredette, who ended up on the floor after the miss. “The ball didnt go in and we lost the game. It was a tough one.” Gordon Hayward, who scored a season-high 21 points for Utah (11-7), sank a free throw after being fouled away from the ball for the final margin. While Hayward was all smiles after breaking out of his scoring slump (14 points combined in last three), Fredette continued to ride the rookie rollercoaster. Last years national player of the year finished with 14 points and was 3 of 5 from beyond the arc. But he was just 5 of 13 overall, was swatted by Al Jefferson and rookie Enes Kanter, and had the ball stolen away by Earl Watson, Devin Harris and C.J. Miles, who had a game-high 20 points. The crowd reaction was as mixed as Fredettes performance. He received a standing ovation from many fans during pre-game introductions, with a few scattered boos. Once the game started, many booed every time he touched the ball. But when he hit his first three-pointer with 1:29 left in the first, fans were on their feet. It was arguably the loudest cheer for an opposing player at the downtown Salt Lake City arena. Late in the game, they chanted “We Want Jimmer,” and he re-entered. “They paid to see him play so they wanted him out there,” said Tyreke Evans, who led Sacramento (6-14) with 31 points on 12-of-20 shooting. “He did a great job. Hes getting better and better. Im happy for him. Hopefully he can continue to play that way.” Jason Thompson and DeMarcus Cousins added 14 and Isaiah Thomas had 13 off the bench for the Kings, while the Jazz got eight points from their rookie guard, Alec Burks. The Kings were down 13 points early in the fourth quarter, but Evans and Thomas brought them back. Evans five-footer with 30 seconds left cut the lead to one, and after Devin Harris made just one of two free throws for a 95-93 lead, the Kings had another chance. “You have a lot of time on the clock and, like I told him in the locker-room, sometimes you dont need the game-winner,” Sacramento coach Keith Smart said. "Sometimes you may need just a two, especially when the guy is a shooter and guys will run at you hard. But, hey, we have a first-year player in a situation, trying to do the right thing, and its a whole different story had he made that shot. “But its something that you learn and grow from here.” The Jazz were happy to escape with the win, after dropping a double-overtime game against Toronto on Wednesday and losing in Dallas on Friday night. “We had a 7-0 run or whatever and thought we were going to close them out, but they played tough, they hung around, and it was almost like Toronto all over again,” Hayward said. “It was good we got the win. But we need to be able to close them out.” Evans made that difficult. He had the play of the game, a highlight-reel dunk in which he took off from nearly the free-throw line. He shot 7 of 12 in the second half, including a three-point play that pulled Sacramento within 90-87 with 3:28 left. But in the end, the ball went to Fredette. Replays show Earl Watson hit his arm, but after the shot was already off. It wasnt the ending Fredette had envisioned in an arena where he was 4-1 overall as a collegian, or just a year after he had averaged 28.9 points in guiding the Cougars to a 32-5 mark and a trip to the NCAA round of 16. “Hopefully Ill have a lot more (shots to win the game),” said Fredette, who had a chance to see his fiancee while in town. “Hopefully, Ill make a lot of those. But not everybody makes all the game-winning shots and we realize that. Everybody was encouraging and said it was a good look and just didnt go down. That happens.” He said he was grateful for all the fans that did support him, and Jazz players got a kick out of the frenzy for the rookie. “It was a great atmosphere,” Watson said. “It was like college. I thought I had on a Utah Utes jersey.” Notes: Former BYU wide receiver Austin Collie, now a member of the Indianapolis Colts, was in attendance Saturday. … Big man Chuck Hayes, who had missed the previous 11 games with a dislocated left shoulder, returned to action Saturday for Sacramento and played 20 minutes but did not score. … Jazz guard Raja Bell left in the second quarter with a strained right adductor and did not return. He finished with three points. … Utahs top two scorers struggled, with Paul Millsap shooting just 2 of 10 for six points and Jefferson hitting 5 of 13 for 12. Téma: Jak postupovat / uff thats what you LONDON — Fourth-seeded Grigor Dimitrov upset top-seeded Stan Wawrinka 6-2, 6-4 to reach the final at Queens Club on Saturday. He will play 10th-seeded Feliciano Lopez in Sundays final, after the Spanish left-hander defeated Radek Stepanek of the Czech Republic 7-6 (7), 6-4. “Its a good feeling,” Dimitrov said. “I always wanted to be in a final out here; stepping on that (court) on Sunday means a lot to me. It has always been like one of the biggest events for me, for some reason” It was the first victory in their three meetings for Dimitrov, who at 23 is the youngest player ranked in the worlds top 20. The Bulgarian took a 3-2 lead on his fourth break point when Wawrinka double-faulted, then broke again for 5-2. Wawrinka held two break points in the next game but was unable to prevent Dimitrov serving out the set, and the Swiss also failed to convert two break points for a 3-1 lead in the second set. Dimitrov broke to lead 4-3 and held on to secure a place in his third final of the year, following tournament victories in Acapulco and Bucharest. “It was not my best match,” Wawrinka said. “Didnt serve the way I wanted, and didnt move well. But Grigor was playing well, being really aggressive, serving big and mixing a lot.” Despite his defeat, Wawrinka was happy with his preparation for Wimbledon, which begins in nine days. “So far its been a positive week except today,” he said. “I was playing well. Im really happy with the practice session that I did every day. I had a lot of time on the grass, so its been really good for the preparation for Wimbledon.” Lopez and Stepanek engaged in several highly entertaining rallies and drew enthusiastic appreciation from the spectators after their spectacular points. Lopez fired a backhand winner down the line to save a break point to lead 2-1, but failed to convert any of five break points of his own when leading 3-2. The Spaniard struggled after leading the tiebreaker 6-3, finally closing out the set on his fifth set point. A break to lead 4-3 in the second set then earned Lopez a place in his first final since he won on grass at Eastbourne a year ago. He, the 25-year-old Toronto backup net-minder and Manitoba native, would be making just his fourth start in the past 16 games against the Jets the following evening. It was the word of opportunity for Reimer, who has fallen into the role of backup, outmatched in recent weeks by Jonathan Bernier, his Quebec counterpart. “Its been,” said Reimer in conversation with the Leaf Report, pausing briefly to choose his words, “its been an interesting year. Thats maybe the best way I can describe it.” More than eight months after he steered the Leafs into their first playoff appearance in nine years and Reimer is no longer the no. 1 guy in Toronto. Bernier has wrestled hold of that mantle for the time being, earning the bulk of starts since the middle of December – 32 on the year compared with 21 for Reimer. Challenged, doubted, and dissected often throughout his 127-game NHL career, be it through summer trade talk for Roberto Luongo, deadline trade talk for Miikka Kiprusoff or a concussion that badly derailed his first full season, Reimer has managed to overcome a series of different hurdles in his tenure as a Leaf, but maybe nothing quite like this. Bernier is not a rumoured threat, nor a nagging injury to bypass, but a feisty challenger itching to prove himself in the spotlight. And thus far, the 25-year-old has taken full advantage of the opportunity hes been granted in Toronto, sitting amongst the top-10 in league save percentage (.925), while eventually establishing himself as the Leafs undeclared no. 1 starter. The looming challenge for Reimer is to snatch the job right back. And he plans to fight for it. He has not and has no intention of asking for a trade out of Toronto despite circumstances (Bernier trade, a proven track record) that might have led others in his situation to stray down that path. “Your end goal is to be the guy and you want that, but youve got to focus on everyday what I need to do so that that can happen,” said Reimer. "Its like I want to win the Cup, but its not like every day I hit the ice Im going to win the Cup. I want to win the Cup, but when I hit the ice its what do I need to do to be the best I can be. And if you focus on that everyday then eventually the Cup will come. “Same with this (situation). Its obviously something you want. Its something you really want. But youve got to focus on a lot smaller goals.” Those goals start with making full use of the opportunities he gets, however infrequent, and reshape a race that is likely far from over. One such oopportunity presented itself earlier this week in Denver, Reimer propelling the Leafs to an unlikely 5-2 win over the Avalanche with 35 big saves.dddddddddddd And now another opportunity looms against the Jets on Saturday evening, his club looking to avenge a 7-1 loss in Dallas two nights earlier. Reimers only real control in the matter of playing time is performance. And though he started with a bang in October – a gaudy .949 save percentage in six games – that performance has dipped downward (albeit with little help in some situations) with Bernier proving the more reliable and consistent of the two. “Thats exactly the way you approach it,” Reimer said of earning more starts with performance. "You try not to look ahead. You try not to say Id like to get 10 out of 12 (starts) or 10 out of 20, or whatever, three out of seven, whatever it may be. “To me, when I get the nod I want to go out there and play my heart out.” This is unfamiliar terrain for the Morweena native, that of the NHL backup. Though he very briefly battled with Ben Scrivens at the outset of last season, Reimer has quickly defined himself as a viable starter in the league, finishing 2013 with eighth best save percentage while steering the Leafs to a near-first round upset of the Bruins in the playoffs. He owns an impressive 63-38-15 career mark with a sturdy .915 save percentage. Falling into the role of second fiddle, thus, has been a challenge, mostly in the mental arena. “Its 105 per cent mental, I think, this game,” said Reimer. “Its all about trying to be in the right mindset and trying to stay positive and knowing that when you have the extra time to work on stuff thats what youve got to do. Youve got to work your butt off so that when you get the nod youre as prepared as you can (be).” His longer-term future in Toronto remains murky at best. Reimer is a restricted free agent this summer with Bernier locked up for another year. In theory, the organization could opt to keep both – though Reimer holds arbitration rights and would seem to hold a pretty good case for a good raise – but more than likely one will be gone by next fall, if not sooner. Both want and have earned the right to start. The choice will ultimately belong to general manager Dave Nonis, who brought Bernier into the fold from Los Angeles in his first big splash as the Maple Leafs boss last summer. Reimer wants to stay and wont ask to go. But he also wants to play and intends to fight to do so. “I feel like Im becoming a better person for it or at least I hope so,” he said of the experience this season. “I feel like Im battling and grinding and trying to do everything I can. As far as I know if youre doing that then thats all you can do.” cheap nfl jerseys wholesale jerseys ’ ’ ’ |

Ligety, who won six of eight races last season and defended his world title in GS, held on to his massive 0.90-second first-run lead to finish in an aggregate 1 minute, 59.50 seconds. Alexis Pinturault of France came second, and overall champion Marcel Hirscher of Austria was 1.02 behind in third. While winning his 18th career title — all in GS — Ligety became the first to win the season opener in three straight years, and he matched Austrian standout Hermann Maiers three victories on the Rettenbach glacier in 1998, 2000 and 05. Téma: Jak postupovat / a disconnect between RICHMOND, Va. — Carl Edwards thought the race was his to win. So did Tony Stewart. And Kyle Busch? Well, he didnt think he had a chance as the laps wound down at Richmond International Raceway. But a penalty on Edwards took him out of contention Saturday night, and a late caution flag for debris gobbled up Stewarts lead and gave Busch one last chance at another Richmond win. Busch pounced on the opportunity, got a strong final pit stop from his Joe Gibbs Racing crew to beat Stewart back onto the track, and sailed away for his first win of the season. “No catching Stewart without that caution,” Busch said. The victory snapped a 22-race winless streak for Busch, and came a day after he went to Victory Lane for the first time as a Nationwide Series team owner. Kurt Busch drove his younger brothers car to its first victory Friday night. The win was also the fourth consecutive in the spring race at Richmond for Busch, who broke a tie with Richard Petty (1971-73) for consecutive win. “Its definitely pretty special any time youre tied for a record with Richard Petty or youre able to break a record with that guy,” Busch said. “Hes just a class act.” As he celebrated his first Sprint Cup Series win of the season, Stewart and Edwards both believed the win was taken from them. Stewart was upset because a caution for debris — he claimed it was for a bottle of soda or water that wasnt an on-track hindrance — erased his lead with 13 laps remaining. He led the leaders down pit road for a final stop, and Busch beat him back onto the track. Busch easily pulled away from Stewart on the restart with nine laps to go, and Stewart was also passed by Dale Earnhardt Jr. to fade to third. “When the caution is for a plastic bottle on the backstretch, its hard to feel good losing that one,” Stewart said. “And we gave it away on pit road. So, we did everything we could to throw it away, got taken away from us.” Edwards, who led a race-high 206 laps, thought the same thing after NASCAR penalized him for jumping the restart with 81 laps remaining. It capped a confusing sequence in what had been a calm, quiet race through the first 300 laps. But a caution after Jeff Burton hit the wall scrambled everything, and only 15 cars were shown on the lead lap when racing resumed. Edwards lined up next to Stewart for the restart, and his spotter had told the driver that he was the leader. But NASCAR said Stewart was the leader, and when Edwards sailed past him on the restart, NASCAR threw the black flag. Edwards questioned the call to crew chief Bob Osborne, and neither seemed to understand why Edwards was penalized. Told by Osborne it was for both passing the leader before the restart, and jumping the restart, Edwards said it was impossible to do both at the same time. NASCAR eventually clarified that Stewart was the leader, but Edwards left too early. Edwards, who ultimately finished 10th, watched a replay of the start before going to talk to NASCAR. He insisted his spotter had been told by NASCAR he was restarting the race as the leader. “I thought NASCAR made a mistake, they lined us up wrong, and I was at a disadvantage being on the outside,” Edwards said. "So I thought, Im getting the best start I can get right now. I got the best start I could get, looks like Tony waited or spun his tires, so they black-flagged me. “I still dont understand why they black-flagged me.” After meeting with NASCAR, he didnt seem to have a better understanding. “We had to just agree to disagree and thats the way it is,” Edwards said. “They run the sport and they do the best job they can, and I drive a race care and do the very best job I can. Id rather not say what was said in there. This whole thing is very frustrating. I dont feel like we did the wrong thing.” NASCAR vice-president of competition Robin Pemberton said nothing mattered except that Edwards jumped the restart, and Osborne also seemed to understand the ruling. “At the end of the day, it comes down to jumping the restart and thats pretty straightforward,” Osborne said. “Our issue was the confusion about who was the leader and who wasnt the leader.” The Edwards penalty and late debris caution got Busch back in the game. And he had some sympathy for Stewart, who led four times for 118 laps. Without the final caution, Busch said he didnt have a chance at the win. “Stewart was phenomenal,” he said. “I hate it for him that we had a caution like that. He deserved to win the race. But I cant say enough about us just getting our lucky break there and getting a chance to win.” Busch also credited his Joe Gibbs Racing team for a strong final pit stop. “Gave me a great pit stop, got me out front, gave me the lead so I could restart the race how I wanted to,” he said. “That was the win right there.” Earnhardt, who couldnt get close enough to Busch to challenge for the win, did move within five points of leader Greg Biffle. But Earnhardt also credited some late-race luck for his finish. “Really happy to come home with second. We were running about fifth all night, and just got lucky on that restart to be on the inside and get a couple spots,” he said. “We just kind of got lucky there at the end on a couple things to gain a couple extra spots.” nfl jerseys china . The Eskimos muzzled their “Top Dog”, virtually handcuffing the young quarterback by limiting what he does best: his ability to run, improvise, and attack a defence with his unmatched will to do whatever it takes to win. That plan went south in a hurry and by half time, Reilly was back in his cage. The next quarterback up for the Eskimos wasnt Kerry Joseph, who has 11 years of experience under his belt. Joseph only had two reps all week during practice. Im scratching my head right now. The Eskimos had planned all week long to go with Jonathan Crompton, a young and promising quarterback from the University of Tennessee. Problem was, Crompton had only thrown 22 career passes in the CFL heading into that must win game! Let me recap: you toil with the decision to start your franchise quarterback after he sustained a concussion just six days ago, limit his package – removing what he does best, dont practice or play your experienced gunslinger, and go with a virtual rookie in a must win game! Wow, I know theres no giving an inch or concessions in football, but on behalf of the dwindling fan base, what is going on? Now this week, with the playoffs virtually out of reach and the season almost over, you want to remove the muzzle on Reilly and set him free to attack the game – likke he should have been last week – and risk further meaningless injury? I dont get it! Now is the time to get Crompton the reps he was given last week.dddddddddddd Again, Im scratching my head here. I know there is a disconnect between management and coaches with who is second on the depth chart and thats why we saw Crompton last week instead of Joseph in a must win game. But how about dealing with your No. 1 quarterback properly? If he was cleared to play last week by third party doctors, then why the muzzle and shackles in a must win game? Manage play calling to keep him out of harms way and make certain he was not exposed to protection breakdowns. What? Are we still talking about the same team? Reilly is an old school quarterback. Hes a warrior and hes proven he can compete, win, and lead this franchise. Its been a long season; rest your star! Now is the time, and for the next four weeks, to see what you have in Crompton. If Joseph is not in the cards for the future, move Jacory Harris onto the active roster and see what hes got to offer too! Head coach Kavis Reed knows all about the seriousness of injuries in football; he was forced to retire prematurely with a neck injury. Not only that, Reed is as passionate as they come in the coaching ranks. Hes uniquely dialed in to his players, both on and off the field. Simply put, he cares! So do I! Sometimes you are too close to the trees to see through the forest. So I ask, why Reilly now? More head scratching… cheap nfl jerseys wholesale jerseys ’ ’ ’ |

Téma: Jak postupovat / lineup Tuesday nig FOXBOROUGH, Mass. — Marco Di Vaio burnished his Major League Soccer MVP credentials with a pair of goals as Montreal climbed to the top of the Eastern Conference with a 4-2 victory over a short-handed New England team on Sunday night. Di Vaio also stamped his imprint on the match by drawing a penalty kick and prompting Revolution goalkeeper Matt Reis dismissal after five minutes. “Marcos one of those players who, as a striker, doesnt have to be in the buildup and touching the ball fifty times like hes used to,” said Patrice Bernier, who converted two penalty kicks in the first half including the one drawn by Di Vaio. “Hes paid pretty much to score the goals and make a difference.” Di Vaio reduced the home side to 10 men when he floated behind the Revolution line with the ball, forcing Reis to pull him down. Referee Sorin Stoica pointed to the spot and then sent Reis off for denying a goal-scoring opportunity. Bernier assumed his usual duties from 12 yards and sent one past substitute goalkeeper Bobby Shuttleworth to place the Impact in front after eight minutes. New England responded to the early adversity, drawing level on a goal by Diego Fagundez after 26 minutes. But Bernier restored the lead five minutes later with his second penalty to pull the Impact ahead once more. Di Vaio ensured the lead by scoring twice on either side of the interval with help from defender Hassoun Camara. Camara prompted Di Vaios first goal with a diagonal ball from the middle third. Di Vaio controlled the pass and then cut inside Revolution defender A.J. Soares and scored inside the near post to give the Impact a critical third goal in first-half stoppage time. Di Vaio scored his second goal of the match — and his league-leading 17th of the season — on another diagonal pass from Camara. “He is an opportunist,” Impact coach Marco Sch Kelyn Rowe produced a consolation goal for the Revolution in the 76th minute, but the Impact played out the waning stages of the match with the knowledge that the three points — and the corresponding return to first place in the Eastern Conference on the goals-scored tiebreaker over New York and Sporting Kansas City — were safe. “For us, it was a great result to have three points,” Bernier said. “The distance is there between (us) and those fourth and fifth places. Now its really the top three teams that are really going away.” Montreal will attempt to maintain its lead of the Eastern Conference when it opens a two-match homestand with Columbus at Stade Saputo on Saturday. Σllibaum said of Di Vaio. “He is a goal-maker, he is a machine, like a terminator. I told him before the game he was a terminator and we need him again. He is crazy, but I am very proud to have this guy.” wholesale jerseys . New Orleans All-Star forward would have difficulty convincing the Hawks. Fielder has been out with a herniated disk in his neck, and surgery was recommended after a follow-up exam and another scan Thursday with Dr. Drew Dossett. General manager Jon Daniels said the team would get second opinion about surgery, but were “expecting that to be confirmed.” Daniels said Dossett was tentatively scheduled to do a cervical fusion Tuesday. That operation has a typical recovery time of three to four months, and the GM said he anticipated Fielder being able to be fully recovered before spring training next year. The Rangers already have a majors-high 13 players on the disabled list. Fielder will become the 14th when that move is made Friday. Fielder had played in 547 consecutive games, then the longest active streak in the majors, before receiving a nerve root block injection Saturday to treat his neck. He had played all 162 games four of the past five seasons, and missed only one game in 2010. Before that, the durable first baseman that turned 30 earlier this month hadnt missed a game since Sept. 14, 2010. The last time he had missed consecutive games was Aug. 24-25, 2007, while with Milwaukee. Texas acquired Fielder last winter from Detroit in a trade for second baseman Ian Kinsler. Fielder is signed through 2020, the rest of the nine-year deal he signed with the Tigers after going there as a free agent for the 2012 season. After the injjection, Fielder took a couple of days off before an exam Monday.dddddddddddd Daniels said the sluggers strength tested normal then and that his symptoms had largely gone away, so he was given clearance to resume baseball activity. Fielder was initially listed in the lineup Tuesday night against Seattle, but was scratched more than three hours before the game after feeling weakness in his arm while taking swings in the batting cage. And he felt no better Wednesday. “His symptoms have gotten worse,” Daniels said Thursday, describing Fielder as frustrated for not feeling like himself and being able to help the team. Daniels said he wasnt surprised by the news he got from Dossett on Thursday. “Talking to (Fielder) and seeing him, you knew this was something that was bothering him,” Daniels said. “We were hoping the injection could get him through the season, and sometimes you have that kind of response. The initial response was positive. But when he had the setback on Tuesday, we kind of felt this is where it was headed.” Daniels said there is a very high success rate for the kind of surgery Fielder will have. “Were looking forward to seeing this guy healthy and doing what he can do,” Daniels said. “Its more of a 2015 thing. Were going to miss him this year.” Fielder has hit .247 with three home runs and 16 RBIs in 42 games this season. The only time he has played fewer games was 39 as a rookie in 2005. Téma: Jak postupovat / DeFazio down low and LOS ANGELES — Jordan Farmar scored a career-high 30 points off the bench, making eight of 10 shots from 3-point range, and the Los Angeles Lakers capitalized on the absence of suspended Sacramento star DeMarcus Cousins to beat the Kings 126-122 Friday night. Jodie Meeks made all eight of his shots and finished with 22 points, including three of the Lakers franchise-record 19 3-pointers on 27 attempts. Pau Gasol also scored 22, and newly acquired reserve MarShon Brooks had 23. The Lakers shot 60 per cent in a matchup of teams with the two worst records in the Western Conference. They have won the first three meetings against the Kings this season, with one remaining on April 2 at Sacramento. Los Angeles is a game behind the Kings in the conference standings and 1 1/2 behind Utah. The Lakers (20-39) must go 11-12 the rest of the way to avoid tying the 1974-75 squad for the worst record in a regulation season since the franchise relocated from Minneapolis to Los Angeles in 1960-61. Rudy Gay scored 32 points for the Kings, who squandered a 12-point lead before halftime and then blew a 15-point lead in the second half despite converting 17 Lakers turnovers into 25 points. Derrick Williams and Isaiah Thomas each had 27 points. First-year Sacramento coach Michael Malone used his 14th different starting lineup, with Williams making his first start since Feb. 2 and power forward Jason Thompson shifting to centre in Cousins spot. Cousins, who is averaging a team-high 22.3 points, received a one-game ban from the NBA on Thursday for punching Houston guard Patrick Beverley in the stomach during the Kings 129-103 home loss Tuesday night. Suspensions are nothing new to Cousins. Last season, the enigmatic four-year veteran with the hair-trigger temper was suspended two games by the league for confronting San Antonio TV analyst and former player Sean Elliott in a hostile manner on the court following the Spurs postgame show, because of some on-air remarks Elliott made criticizing Cousins for trash-talking with Tim Duncan. About a month later, Cousins was suspended one game for striking Dallas O.J. Mayo in the groin area. Cousins got into trouble again less than 1 1/2 weeks after that while the Kings were at Staples Center to play the Clippers. That night he shouted at Kings coach Keith Smart in the locker room during halftime, was benched for the rest of that game and then suspended two games for “unprofessional behaviour and conduct detrimental to the team.” On New Years Day 2012, Cousins demanded a trade and was ordered by then-coach Paul Westphal to stay home for a game while the team was in New Orleans because of his “lack of commitment” to the organization. NOTES: The only other 30-point game for a Lakers player this season was by Nick Young, who had 31 on Jan. 20 in an overtime loss at Chicago. … Lakers point guard Kendall Marshall played 19 scoreless minutes with 10 assists. … The Kings came in averaging a league-worst 22.9 fouls. They were called for 16 against the Lakers. … The Lakers are one of seven teams that have lost 20 or more games by double-digit margins. … Sacramento will host Minnesota and New Orleans before going back on the road for seven straight games. … The Lakers have won 16 of their last 20 against the Kings, with three of the losses coming in Sacramento. A year ago, as newly appointed general manager Masai Ujiri bided his time and sat out of a lacklustre 2013 draft, this scenario seemed highly improbable. Jones, lead Dawn McEwen, second Jill Officer and third Kaitlyn Lawes were 8-0 going into the game and had already clinched a berth in the semifinals.ABBOTSFORD, B.C. — With their playoff hopes hanging by a thread, the Utica Comets needed someone to step up Saturday night. Enter team captain Colin Stuart. Stuart scored twice to lead the Utica Comets to a 3-1 win over the Abbotsford Heat on Saturday in American Hockey League action. Stuart now has 15 goals on the year and is tied for third on the team despite scoring just twice in the previous 15 games. “We challenged our leaders to bring a better game tonight, and (Stuart) was one of the guys who stepped up,” said Comets head coach Travis Green. “Hes been good for us all year. You expect your captain to make plays and step up at the right time. You need all your best players this time of the year and it was good to see him do that.” The Comets had their four-game winning streak snapped Friday by the Heat, but moved to within eight points of a Western Conference playoff berth with the bounce-back victory. “I didnt like the way we skated last night and the way we competed in certain areas of the ice,” said Green. “The guys responded well tonight. These are desperate times for our team and we played like it tonight.” Stuart, who signed with the Comets NHL-affiliate Vancouver Canucks during the summer, played in Abbotsford during the Heats inaugural season in 2009-10. Hes now registered six points in six games against the Heat this year. “Its still neat coming here,” said Stuart. “And not just the arena, but the city itself. Its interesting to see how things have changed around town. And obviously I was here in the inaugural season so it was pretty special too.” Brandon DeFazio also scored for the Comets for his third goal in four games. Alex Friesen had two assists for Utica (27-27-7), while Joacim Eriksson made 38 saves in the win. “(Eriksson) was good the whole game,” said Green. “I like him last night and really liked him for the last three months. Hes been real solid for us. He had a tough start to the year but hes starting to develop.” Eriksson gave the Abbotsford offence fits Saturday, making several key stops. “We keyed on getting the puck to the net but obviously we didnt take away the guys eyes as well as we should have,” said Heat defenceman Chad Billins. "Theyre big bodies back there and they box out very well. Weve got to get some more bodies to the front of the net. And also hhes a good goalie, so youve got to give him credit too.ddddddddddddquot; Ben Street scored the only goal for the Heat and Olivier Roy stopped 31 shots for Abbotsford (34-21-7), which has just one win in its last nine games. The Heat actually had the best opportunities to open the scoring, getting four power plays in the first period, but had nothing to show for it, including just one shot through 10 minutes. “We had four straight power plays, and we didnt generate anything off of that,” said Heat head coach Troy Ward. “We didnt gain some momentum, we didnt put ourselves in a position physically or mentally to get some emotion or get some charge out of those power plays. I thought that was one of the biggest differences in the game.” Stuart mirrored that idea. “We got into a little bit of penalty trouble in the first period,” said Stuart. “We just kept battling back. Wed kill off a penalty and gain back a little bit more momentum and build on it. They kept coming at us and we weathered the storm when we needed to and controlled the game when we needed to as well.” The Comets finally opened the scoring at 8:47 of the second period. Yann Sauves long shot was kicked out by Roy right to DeFazio down low and he made no mistake in beating Roy stick side for his 12th of the year. The Heat had some opportunities to get on the board. Corey Locke forced a turnover behind the net and centred for Max Reinhart, but Eriksson stopped him and made it look easy as well. While Locke has 14 assists with the Heat this season, he still has not scored in 18 games. “Its frustrating,” said Locke. “Ive been getting looks but cant find a way to get the puck behind that goal-line. It cost a goal today. I stayed out to try and score, extending a shift, and they go back and score that second goal. Thats unacceptable.” Stuart made it 2-0 at 15:25. Friesen made a perfect pass off the boards, around a Heat defender, to Stuart and he beat Roy blocker side. The Comets captain got his second of the game at 3:05 of the third. He skated to the left faceoff dot and wired a shot short side on the Heat netminder, putting the visitors up 3-0. The Heat had a two-man advantage with eight minutes to go in the third and finally beat Eriksson. Street one-timed Lockes pass from the slot, blowing it by the Swedish netminders glove for his 23rd of the year. Téma: Jak postupovat / l in the first half -- and PHILADELPHIA — It didnt take Russian forward Nikita Scherbak long to win over the Montreal media. “Oh my God, a lot of people,” a nervous Scherbak said as he approached a phalanx of media backstage at Wells Fargo Center after going 26th overall to the Canadiens in the first round of the NHL draft Friday. “Oh my God.” Within five minutes, the Saskatoon Blades winger was over his nerves and had English, French and Russian reporters eating out of his hand. What do you know about Montreal, he was asked. “Merci, bonjour,” he offered. And what about the Habs? “I know Montreal wins a lot of Stanley Cups.” Asked how much he weighed, Scherbak said he was 190 pounds. “But I havent eaten for two days, Im so nervous,” he said to laughter. “Im sitting eating my fingers.” The Russian, either six foot or 6-2 depending on who you believe, scored 28 goals and added 50 assists in his first year with the Blades to lead all WHL rookies. He also was named the Blades most valuable player and rookie of the year. “I think Im a good playmaker,” he said. Habs GM Marc Bergevin marvelled at the Russians poise. “I saw somebody with a lot of personality. Hes got an appeal to him. Hes got confidence. Montreals a different market and from what weve seen so far we feel we could handle that.” The Canadiens also have players who can mentor the young Russian in Alexei Emelin, Andrei Markov and Alex Galchenyuk. Asked how close Scherbak is to making the NHL, Bergevin gave the stock answer. “Thats going to be up to him,” he said. As for his playing skills, Bergevin pointed to his speed, skating, vision and playmaking ability. “For us, hes a top talent,” he said. “For whatever reason he was at 26 so we jumped on him.” The GM acknowledged that he would have looked to move down the draft had the Russian been picked earlier. Scherbak said he came to Canada because he wanted to fulfil his dream and that of his family to play in the NHL. “I dont think about the KHL,” he added. The language barrier wasnt easy. At first, he said all he could do was “just show.” Then he learned “easy words like cat, dog, like food, eat, sleep.” A year on, he can chat away. “Thats pretty good,” said one reporter. “I think so too,” smiled Scherbak. “Maybe I learn French right now,” he added. Reporters suddenly felt old when, asked who he looked up to in the NHL, Scherbak cited 21-year-old Edmonton Oilers forward Ryan Nugent-Hopkins. Earlier in the day, Montreal coach Michel Therrien acknowledged he has replayed the Eastern Conference final loss in his head. “Of course,” he said at the draft. “if you look at the big picture, yes were happy about the progress we made. But at the same time, when youre two wins away from reaching the Stanley Cup final, yes youve got to be disappointed.” The Canadiens have already made some decisions. Bergevin says free agents Thomas Vanek, defenceman Douglas Murray and tough guy George Parros wont be back. Talks continue with three other free agents: captain Brian Gionta, and defencemen Mike Weaver and Francis Bouillon. Markov and Therrien have both signed new deals. “Thats good news for us,” Therrien said of Markov staying in the fold. “Hes an important player, hes a veteran. Hes got such an important role, so were all pleased hes back with us.” Therrien agreed to a four-year contract extension earlier this month. The 50-year-old is in his second stint at the Habs helm. His record over the last two seasons is 75-42-13. Finding an assistant coach to replace Gerard Gallant, now head coach of the Florida Panthers, is also on the Habs to-do list. Defenceman P.K. Subbans contract is also a major issue. Bergevin says there has already been a meeting with Subbans agent. Asked about young goalie Dustin Tokarskis immediate future, Therrien said simply: “Well see at the (training) camp.” Tokarski acquitted himself well in filling in for the injured Carey Price against the Rangers. Therrien made a point of praising backup Peter Budaj, who was ignored in favour of Tokarski. “Peter is one of the best backups in the NHL. So I have a lot of respect for Peter Budaj.” . Griffin had 22 points and 14 rebounds, Butler scored 20 points against the team he suffered a season-ending injury against last January, and the Clippers beat the severely undermanned Milwaukee Bucks 92-86 on Saturday night. “I love it,” said Billups, who scored 19 points. “I love it because your stars dont have to be superstars every night. They can lean on other guys when its not going so well.” The chippy game resulted in a combined 54 fouls, including a flagrant 1 against Milwaukees Larry Sanders for his hard takedown of Butler on an attempted layup with 1:38 left in the third quarter. Paul finished with nine points and seven assists. “We have so many scorers and so many weapons that even if the ball doesnt go in sometimes, well still be able to score points,” Griffin said. “As good as our new guys are, thats what makes that transition easier. Guys like Chauncey and Caron, because of how good they are and how hard they work and how much they love the game, it just flows a little bit better than it would otherwise.” The last time Butler played against the Bucks, on New Years Day 2011 with Dallas, he ruptured a tendon in his right knee while going for an offensive rebound at Milwaukee. He underwent surgery and missed the rest of the Mavericks championship season, then signed with the Clippers as a free agent. “Hes highly motivated, coming off that injury, and hes going to have a great year,” Billups said. “I dont know if people forgot, but Caron has been one of the best small forwards in the game in the last seven, eight, nine years. He probably flew under the radar because he didnt play much last year. But we know about him, and he wont be a secret for long.” Brandon Jennings scored 21 points and had seven assists for the Bucks, who have lost four straight. They played their third in a row without centre Andrew Bogut, who is in Australia attending to personal matters with his family. Teammate Luc Mbah a Moute, who helped UCLA reach the Final Four in 2008, missed his third in a row because of tendinitis in his right knee. In addition, swingman Mike Dunleavy Jr. was sidelined by a groin problem, reserve guard Beno Udrih also sat out with an injured left shoulder, and reserve forward Jon Brockman left the game for good midway through the second quarter because of a bruised left eye. Drew Gooden again started in Boguts place, contributing 18 points and 13 rebounds in 29 minutes. The Bucks are off to their first 0-5 start on the road sincee 2004-05, when they dropped their first seven.dddddddddddd. “We need somebody to step up and knock down shots for us,” said forward Stephen Jackson, who was 4 for 18. “It has been difficult on this trip, for sure. We havent gotten anybody with any consistency knocking down shots. Were not playing a very efficient game right now.” Paul took a breather after getting his fourth foul with 2:17 left in the third quarter and Los Angeles leading 65-59. He was replaced by Randy Foye, who had played only six minutes to that point despite his 14-point fourth quarter in Wednesdays 117-89 win over Houston. The Clippers still had a four-point lead when Paul reported back in with 9:55 remaining, and they stayed in front the rest of the way. Paul hit a 20-footer with 2:23 remaining to help clinch it. “I never go into a game saying Im going to get 15 or 20 points. Im just going to take whatever the defence gives me,” Paul said. “Tonight Chauncey got it going — and Blake, obviously. Thats how its going to be with this team all season long. Youve got to win games like this. When its all said and done, its not about the stats. Its about the won and lost columns.” Milwaukee led 40-38 at halftime despite shooting 35 per cent. The Clippers took charge in the third quarter with a 14-2 run that gave them their biggest lead, 63-50, with 4:48 left in the period. “Defensively, we just have so much room for improvement,” Griffin said. “We played poorly on defence tonight, and luckily they missed some shots.” The three-point shooting was poor at both ends of the court. The Clippers missed their first nine attempts — all in the first half — and finished 4 for 19. The Bucks were 6 for 20 after missing 10 of their first 12 from behind the arc. Forward Reggie Evans grabbed six rebounds in his Clippers debut after being sidelined for the first five games of the season because of a sprained right foot. The nine-year veteran averaged a career-high 11.5 rebounds in 30 games with Toronto last season. The Bucks shrugged off a seven-point deficit and took their first lead 38 seconds into the second quarter on a layup by Jennings that put them ahead 19-17. Clippers reserve guard Ryan Gomes picked up three fouls in his first seven minutes on the floor and was back on the bench with 10:18 left in the half. NOTES: This was the teams only meeting this season due to the reconfigured 66-game schedule caused by the lockout. … Paul extended his streak to 15 consecutive games with at least one steal when he stripped the ball from Gooden with 4:16 left in the second quarter. … The Clippers had 14 turnovers against a Bucks defence that had forced an average of 19.2 over their first six games. Téma: Jak postupovat / just waiting on every LONDON — Christian Eriksen scored one goal and set up two more as Tottenham recovered from an early defensive howler to rout Sunderland 5-1, leaving the visitors rooted to the bottom of the Premier League table. Tottenham put aside speculation about the manager Tim Sherwoods future and the early mistake to produce a comfortable victory at White Hart Lane to stay in the hunt for a European place. Tottenham gifted Sunderland the opener as Vlad Chiriches collected a poor return ball from goalkeeper Hugo Lloris and played a terrible square ball straight into the path of Lee Cattermole, who slotted home his first Sunderland goal. The hosts equalized when Emmanuel Adebayor bundled home Eriksens cross and Harry Kane then prodded home his first Premier League goal to give Spurs a deserved lead. Eriksen netted the third before Adebayor tucked home his second and substitute Gylfi Sigurdsson struck home in stoppage time. w… nfl jerseys . Kevin Stadler, the 33-year-old son of major champion Craig “The Walrus” Stadler, won the Phoenix Open on Sunday for his first PGA Tour victory. Stadler won when playing partner Bubba Watson missed a five-foot par putt on 18. “It was a little weird way to win a golf tournament,” Stadler said. “I fully expected him to make the putt. I would have rather made mine to win it.” Stadler closed with a 3-under 68 for a one-stroke victory over Watson and Graham DeLaet of Weyburn, Sask. Watson shot 71, and DeLaet had a 65. “He beat me,” Watson said. “Hes a great player.” Stadler won in his 239th tour start, earning a spot in the Masters — a tournament his father won in 1982. The Stadlers are the ninth father-son winners in tour history and will be the first to play in the same Masters. “Its going to great for me because its really my last one,” said Craig Stadler, a 13-time PGA Tour winner with nine Champions Tour victories. “I kept saying, When he gets in, thats my last one. … Im proud of him. Its awesome.” Kevin Stadler finished at 16-under 268 at TPC Scottsdale, his home course. Raised in Colorado, he played in Denver Broncos colours, wearing an orange shirt and blue pants and hat. What was he thinking when Watson was standing over his par putt on 18? “How long the playoff was going to take and how long until I can watch the football game?” Stadler said. After Stadler and Watson each saved par after hitting into the water on the par-5 15th, Stadler tied Watson for the lead with a par on the par-3 16th hole. Watson hit into the front left bunker on the stadium hole and his six-footer missed to the left. At the 347-yard 17th, they each drove the green and two-putted for birdie from 90 feet — Watson holing out from 18 feet and Stadler from 5. On the par-4 18th, Stadler hit his 110-yard approach to the back right pin to 10 feet. Watson drove into the right rough and hammered his 120-yard second over the green. Watson bladed his shot from the trampled rough into the bank next to the green and it ran five feet past the hole. After Stadler missed his birdie try and tapped in for par, Watsons par try slid by the left side. “I thought I hit a good putt, but obviously I misread that, too,” Watson said.dddddddddddd Stadler birdied the par-4 ninth to take a one-stroke lead over Watson, but fell behind with a double bogey on the par-4 11th. Stadler took a penalty stroke for an unplayable lie after driving into a Buckhorn Cholla and missed a 4-foot bogey try. “Cactus and short putt and all that was on one hole,” Stadler said. “Eleven has had my number for years. I butcher that hole every year.” Stadler likely will move up high enough in the world ranking to get one of the last spots in the 64-man Match Play Championship this month outside Tucson. Stadlers previous biggest win was in Australia in the European Tours 2006 Johnnie Walker Classic. In that event, he hit a 3-iron to a foot for an eagle on the final hole for a two-stroke victory. He also won the Argentine Open that winter and has four Nationwide Tour wins. “Its been a long time since I won anything,” Stadler said. “Its pretty special.” Watson is winless since the 2012 Masters. “I was a challenging day,” Watson said. “Again, its the same thing, just waiting on every tee box and waiting on every shot.” Hunter Mahan and Japans Hideki Matsuyama tied for fourth at 14 under. Mahan, the 2010 winner, finished with a 68, and Matsuyama shot 69. DeLaet bogeyed the 15th after hitting into the water, but rallied with birdies on the final two holes. He also tied for second last week at Torrey Pines. “I have been playing well for the last few months,” DeLaet said. “I really feel like I worked super hard in the off-season. Its nice to see it paying off.” Phil Mickelson closed with a 71 to tie for 42nd at 3 under. Lefty was making his 25th appearance in the event he won in 1996, 2005 and 2013. “My game is not far off, even though the score says that it is,” Mickelson said. “It was just a fraction off.” He showed no signs of the back pain that forced him to withdraw at Torrey Pines, and will play next week at Pebble Beach. “Back feels great,” Mickelson said. The event drew an estimated 563,008 fans, breaking the seven-day record of 538,356 set in 2008. The tournament drew a golf-record 189,722 on Saturday and 60,232 on Sunday. Téma: Jak postupovat / ficialteamshop.com/]L EDMONTON — Ilya Bryzgalov once compared Edmonton to the North Pole. Now hes trying to help the Oilers find some direction. The free-agent goaltender agreed to terms on a one-year deal with the Oilers on Friday, pending the completion of a trade with the Calgary Flames that cleared defenceman Ladislav Smids US$3.5-million cap hit off the books. It was not immediately clear what Bryzgalovs contract was worth, but a source said recent negotiations involved discussions about a pro-rated $3-million salary. The Philadelphia Flyers bought out of the final seven years of Bryzgalovs $51-million, nine-year contract last off-season. The 33-year-old goaltender went to training camp with the ECHLs Las Vegas Wranglers on a tryout but never signed a deal with that club. In Bryzgalov, general manager Craig MacTavish told the Oilers official website that the team was getting a goalie with a “history of being a high-performer in parts of his career” and whos “very motivated.” “I believe in the power of the potential of people,” MacTavish said in an interview with AM-630 in Edmonton. “Hes said and indicated all the right things to me in the conversations that Ive had. I think he has a chance to come in here and make a real impact on our team.” Bryzgalov went 19-17-3 with a 2.79 goals-against average and .900 save percentage last season for the Flyers. The Oilers are in Philadelphia to play the Flyers on Saturday, and while Bryzgalov still lives in the area it was not likely that hed even be in uniform. According to reports, Bryzgalov could first go on a conditioning assignment with the Oklahoma City Barons of the AHL. His last NHL game was April 25. To set up the signing, the Oilers began their shake-up by sending Smid and goaltending prospect Olivier Roy to Calgary in exchange for centre Roman Horak and goaltending prospect Laurent Brossoit. “It was an opportunity to give us some cap (space) to do a few other things and add goaltending depth,” MacTavish said, as quoted by the team. “I thank (Smid) for his work ethic and sacrifice on behalf of the hockey club and we wish him well.” At 4-11-2, the Oilers are in last place in the NHLs Pacific Division, so the deal does not come as a surprise. Going into Fridays games, Edmonton was ranked last in the league with 3.82 goals-against. Goaltenders Devan Dubnyk, Jason LaBarbera and Richard Bachman were part of that, but there was also a belief the Oilers wanted to shore up their defence. Instead, they traded from their blue-line by dealing Smid to the Flames. The 27-year-old had one goal and one assist in 17 games and averaged more than two minutes a night on the penalty kill. The Oilers were not up against the cap ceiling, though its uncertain what other moves MacTavish has in store. He and president of hockey operations Kevin Lowe have seen scouted the New York Rangers and Flyers recently, but MacTavish expressed satisfaction in the teams recent play. “As bad as our record is, I see plenty of progress and maybe more important plenty of potential in this hockey club,” MacTavish said on AM-630. “Certainly no moves imminent and hopefully none for quite some time.” Signing Bryzgalov marks a major move for the Oilers, who have a team save percentage of .879 this season. In his NHL career Bryzgalov has a .913 save percentage. His history with the city of Edmonton dates to 2006 when he defended then-Anaheim Ducks teammate Chris Pronger for requesting to be traded from the Oilers. Bryzgalov likened it to the “North Pole.” “He may be tried to leave here because here in November months is a minus-32,” Bryzgalov said in an interview with The Score. “Could you imagine? Its eight months in a year of snow.” When playing for the Phoenix Coyotes amid rumours of the team moving to Winnipeg, Bryzgalov said he wouldnt like to live there because of a lack of parks and fellow Russians. Smid, who was sent from Anaheim to Edmonton as part of the Pronger trade, has 11 goals, 54 assists and 391 penalty minutes over 474 games with the Oilers. “(It was a) difficult trade for me because of the fact that Laddy was such a warrior for the hockey club for so many years here,” MacTavish said on AM-630. He is known as a shutdown defenceman and one of the leagues best shot blockers and should help the Flames, who are without captain Mark Giordano (broken ankle) for another five to seven weeks. “We were looking to try to do something before Gio got hurt. We felt we needed to improve the mix of our six,” GM Jay Feaster said in Calgary. “Certainly Giordanos injury makes this a more timely addition. Were happy to be able to do it now.” Roy was selected in the fifth round, 133rd overall, by Edmonton in 2009. He had a stellar junior career with the Cape Breton Screaming Eagles of the QMJHL, but has yet to suit up for an NHL game. He may get that chance in Calgary. The Flames have struggled for consistency in goal in their first season without Finnish workhorse Miikka Kiprusoff, who retired at the end of last season. Roy, 22, split last season between Oklahoma City and the ECHLs Stockton Thunder. He had a 2-2 record with a 3.29 GAA and .897 save percentage with the Barons this season. Horak, 22, has spent the past three seasons with the Flames, registering five goals, 13 assists and 16 penalty minutes in 82 games. He has 20 goals and 21 assists in 86 games with Abbotsford of the AHL. Horak was originally selected by the New York Rangers in the fifth round, 127th overall in the 2009 draft. Brossoit, 20, has spent the past four seasons with the Western Hockey Leagues Edmonton Oil Kings, posting a record of 88-34-13 in 146 career WHL games. In 2011-12, the native of Port Alberni, B.C., helped lead the Oil Kings to the best record in the WHL, posting a record of 42-13-5, including three shutouts. He went 16-4-0 in the post-season and was named the playoff MVP as the Oil Kings won the WHL championship and earned a berth in the Memorial Cup Tournament. Brossoit was originally selected by the Calgary Flames in the sixth round, 164th overall in the 2011 draft. Hes in his first professional season. Téma: Jak postupovat / old shortstop Jimmy R ARLINGTON, Texas — Mariners designated hitter Corey Hart will be sidelined for four to six weeks after he strained his left hamstring stealing a base over the weekend. The Mariners placed Hart on the 15-day disabled list before Tuesday nights game at Texas. They recalled infielder-outfielder Nick Franklin from Triple-A Tacoma. The 32-year-old Hart injured his leg swiping second during the fourth inning of the Mariners 6-2 victory at Minnesota on Sunday. He has appeared in 37 games, hitting .209 with five home runs and 17 RBIs. With no one other natural DH on the roster, manager Lloyd McClendon said he will mix and match to fill Harts vacancy in the batting order. “We all agree we dont have a prototypical No. 4 hitter,” McClendon said. “We dont have a guy thats going to hit 40 home runs. Well do the best we can.” Franklin was leading the Pacific Coast League in hitting at .376. Hes a natural second baseman who played three infield positions, the outfield and served as the DH over six appearances for Seattle during a brief April call-up. McClendon said Franklin will again float around multiple positions, including second base when Robinson Cano occupies the designated hitter spot. “A lot of it depends on his legs,” McClendon said of Cano, 31. “I know he prefers to play the field.” .C. – Bernhard Langer overcame a bad start Saturday to take a two-stroke lead after the second round of the Champions Tours Greater Hickory Classic. .Y. – Centre Corban Knight scored 3:30 into overtime, and the Abbotsford Heat rallied to edge the Utica Comets 5-4 on Wednesday in American Hockey League play. There could be some history made on Friday night in Buffalo. Mike Hessman of the Toledo Mudhens needs one more homer to break the all-time International League career home run mark. Before you say “big deal” as I was tempted to do, you should know who Mike Hessman is and how he made this journey over a long and varied career. First off he was born in Fountain Valley, California, and grew into the dimensions of a true slugger. He is 65" and 215 pounds. He was chosen in the 15th round of the 1996 MLB draft by Atlanta. He made it to the “Show” with the Braves in 2003. He had a long looping swing and struck out too much and generally over a short-lived big league career, the 3B/1B also seemed to be stuck behind better players such as Chipper Jones. Besides Atlanta, Hessman also made pit stops in Detroit and with the New York Mets between 2003 and 2010, hitting .188 with 14 home runs. Over time Hessman became a fixture in the International League. Now 36, he has slugged 258 homers in the “I” to tie the late Ollie Carnegie, who spent the bulk of his career playing in Buffalo. Carnegie played his final season with the Bisons in 1945. These two were a study in physical contrasts. While Hessman is 65", Carnegie was only 57" and weighed 175 pounds. Surely the Major League home run record is more impressive and more prestigious. Babe Ruth broke Roger Connors career mark of 138 back in 1921. The Bambino ran that total up to 714 by 1935, and that mark endured until Hank Aaron broke it on April 8, 1974 at Atlanta against Al Downing and the Dodgers. So Babe Ruth held the career home run record for 53 years. Carnegies mark of 258 has stood since the year he retired as a player in 1945. If you do the math, thats 69 years. Oddly enough Carnegie never played in the Majors, largely because he didnt start playing pro ball on a regular basis until he joined Buffalo at age 32 in 1931. Before that he played mainly semi-pro or amateur ball and held down a regular job. Nowadays 258 home runs doesnt sound like all that imposing a number. But remember today, its all about player development. If you dont make the Majors by your mid-20s or maybe late 20s if youre lucky, youre going to be out of a job. You have to have a special talent and be a unique individual, as Mike Hessman must be to stick around until the age of 36. Hessman had a bit of a scare about a week ago. He had to have some tissue removed from his nose and his forehead. Luckily it proved to be non-cancerous. He missed three games this week waiting for the swelling on his face to go down, then went 0-for-3 at Coca-Cola Field on Thurssday afternoon.dddddddddddd Friday night is the series finale at Buffalo and it would only seem fitting that he would hit his 259th homer in the city where Ollie Carnegie spent the bulk of his career and is enshrined in the Buffalo Sports Hall of Fame. When Hessman ultimately does break this record, he has other mountains to climb. He is also third on the all-time list of homers hit in the minors. Buzz Arlett is number one with 432, Nick Cullop has 420 and Hessman checks in with 403. Scoring Big Pitching and defence may win championships, but you cant deny the fact that the Blue Jays offence could carry them a long way. Theyve scored 311 runs in 61 games and slugged 87 homers, tops in the American League in both categories. You can add the total home runs for the Royals and Yankees and get 77, 10 fewer than the Jays, or the Rangers and Red Sox and get 85, still two less than the Blue Jays. In the runs scored category, the Jays have rung up 57 more than the second-best team in their division – Baltimore (254) – and then you drop off to Boston and the Yankees at 240 and Tampa Bay at a paltry 228. Boston was the runaway leader in runs scored in the American League last season with 853 and ultimately won the World Series. Im just saying. Unusual Moments This is something that happens so rarely in baseball, yet it happened twice in the last week. The Angels Garrett Richards and Clevelands Justin Masterson both struck out the side on nine pitches. Another oddity came on Wednesday when the Phillies 35-year-old shortstop Jimmy Rollins struck out four times in a game for the first time in his career, earning the famed “Golden Sombrero”. The opposing pitcher though was Washingtons Stephen Strasburg, so well cut Rollins some slack. Rollins incidently is up to 2,226 hits now for his career. He needs nine more to pass Hall of Famer Mike Schmidt as the Phillies all-time hits leader. Since the Phils are having such a dismal season, the feeling is growing that Rollins will waive his 10-and-5 rights and will agree to a trade once the record is broken. The Tigers would be a perfect fit. The Atlanta Braves lead the National League East. Yet strangely enough, they have been held to 0 or 1 runs in a game a Major League-high 18 times. At the Draft If youre wondering why the Blue Jays used their ninth-overall pick in the Draft Thursday night to take a pitcher who just had Tommy John surgery in May, consider this. Veteran baseball writer Danny Knobler has seen Jeff Hoffman out of East Carolina pitch and said this of him: “He could be Justin Verlanders brother”. Say no more! Téma: Jak postupovat / West Broms sporting a CHARLOTTE, N.C. — The Charlotte Hornets are back. The NBA franchise announced Tuesday at a press conference it has officially changed its name back to the Hornets after 10 years of being known as the Bobcats. The change comes nearly one year after owner Michael Jordan indicated he wanted to change the name back to the Hornets. The league approved the change last July. Jordan didnt attend the press conference, but issued a statement saying its a “historic day for our franchise, our city and our fans.” The Hornets resided in Charlotte from 1988-2002 before George Shinn moved the team — and name — to New Orleans after a messy divorce from the city. The name became available again when New Orleans owner Tom Benson changed his teams name from the Hornets to the Pelicans. Several hundred fans showed up at the downtown arena for the formal announcement. Hornets president and CEO Fred Whitfield said the goal is restore the energy the Hornets brought to the city when they were in Charlotte 12 years ago playing at the Charlotte Coliseum, which was known by fans simply as “The Hive.” It was there the Hornets were consistently among the league leaders in attendance. “For me this day is almost surreal because I was a Hornets season ticket holder,” Whitfield said. “I know what it felt like in the old Hive and the energy and excitement that happened to be there. Michael talks fondly about the days he came in and played against the Hornets and what a challenge it was not only to battle a good team, but also the fans.” Whitfield also announced that in collaboration with the NBA and the Pelicans, all of the statistical information, records and history of the Charlotte NBA basketball will be restored to the franchise. That means the Hornets will now own and have access to all of the historical elements from the recent Bobcats era (2004-14) as well as the original Hornets teams that played in Charlotte |

Téma: Jak postupovat / oints. Ruolin Chen and Hao Wa SOCHI, Russia — Canadian skip Jennifer Jones won Olympic gold Thursday, defeating Sweden 6-3 to complete her curling trophy case with an unbeaten run on the sports biggest stage. A steal of two in the ninth sealed the win over Swedish skip Margaretha Sigfridsson, who throws lead stones but calls the shots as skip. Jones has now added Olympic gold to the world championship she won in 2008 as well as four Canadian crowns. In the process, she has matched Canadian skip Kevin Martins feat of winning the Olympic crown with a perfect record. Its Canadas second womens curling gold. The late Sandra Schmirler won the first in Nagano, Japan, in 1998. Britains Eve Muirhead, the 2013 world champion, defeated Switzerlands Mirjam Ott 6-5 for the bronze medal earlier in the day. Team Canada coach Mike Babcock was in the stands to witness the Canadian win, as were several members of the Swedish hockey team. No Canada womens team has even won a world championship since Jones rink, without third Kaitlyn Lawes, claimed the crown in 2008. Jones beat Sigfridssons route in the round-robin en route to that title. Jones, Lawes, second Jill Officer and lead Dawn McEwen dispatched Muirhead in the semifinal after going 9-0 in the round-robin. Canada downed Sweden 9-3 on the second day of the Olympic curling competition, with the Swedes shaking hands with two ends left. It was a tough start for Officer and Lawes, who thumped her broom in disgust at one point. Jones, who opened with hammer, had to take one in the first end after some aggressive curling by the Swedes had the Canadian skip holding last rock with three Swedish stones in the house. Jones hit and stuck for the single. The Swedes tied it up, escaping with a single from a crowded house in the second. Lawes doubled off two Swedish rocks as the third was blanked. Canada capitalized in the fourth when Swedens Maria Prytz — throwing fourth — jammed on a double attempt with last rock and Jones drew for a deuce and a 3-1 lead. With Lawes and Officer struggling and Sweden holding hammer, Jones faced a house with three Swedish rocks counting as she threw her last stone. She hit and stuck, but leaving Sweden shot rock. Prytz tried to remove Canadian rocks for a big score but had to settle for two and a 3-3 tie. The sixth and seventh were blanked as the Swedes put rocks in the house and Canada cleaned them out. In the eighth, there was more action in the house. After freezes by Canada and Sweden, each team had a rock around the same distance from the button. Jones tried to draw for a possible two, happy to nudge the Swedish rock out of the way, but was short and Canada had to settle for one after a measurement. The Swedes went down 4-3 but high-fived because they had hammer. Jones nailed a pressure draw with her last rock of the ninth. That piled the pressure on Prytz, given the plethora of Canadian rocks in the house. The Swede wrecked her shot and Canada stole two. Prytz looked to the skies, as if wondering what she had to deserve such a fate. The Swedes have a rich history in curling at the Olympics, winning gold in 2006 and 2010 (via Anette Norberg) and bronze in 1998 (Elisabet Gustafson). Sigfridsson has lost four world championship finals: as third in 2002, lead in 2009 and as skip with her current team in 2012 and 2013. He has started 78 of his last 79 games, including 15 last year when he registered 83 tackles and returned a fumble 30 yards for a touchdown. “Thomas provides a veteran in the secondary who is familiar with the NFC South and has been a very solid player,” Panthers coach Ron Rivera said in a press release. “We are pleased to add him to a safety group that has good experience and production.” Its unclear what DeCouds arrival will mean for safety Charles Godfrey, who missed 14 games last season with a torn Achilles tendon. The Panthers could save more than $5 million if the release the veteran safety — meaningful money for a team that doesnt have much room to manoeuvr under the NFL salary cap. Plus, the Panthers already signed free-agent safety Roman Harper from the New Orleans Saints earlier this off-season. DeCoud was a third-round draft pick of the Falcons in 2009 and has played in 89 games with 507 career tackles, 14 interceptions, three sacks, four forced fumbles and three fumble recoveries. He has played in five playoff games, starting four. Like DeCoud, Dickson is also a former third-round draft pick who has played his entire career with one team. The 6-foot-4, 255-pound Dickson started 44 games and played in 60 during his four seasons with the Baltimore Ravens. He has 111 career receptions for 1,178 yards and seven touchdowns since joining the league in 2010. Dickson also brings plenty of playoff experience to Carolina. He has played in eight playoff games with five starts and helped the Ravens win the Super Bowl two years ago. “Ed is a young player who has shown he is a capable blocker as well as receiver in the league,” Rivera said in a release. “He provides experienced depth at the tight end position and we look forward to having him in the mix.” Greg Olsen has been the teams starting tight end for the last three seasons and is expected to remain the teams go-to guy in short-yardage situations. But Dickson offers a nice complement for quarterback Cam Newton as the Panthers look to refocus on their running game this season. Dicksons best season came in 2011 when he started 16 games and caught 54 passes for 528 yards with five touchdowns. Last season he started 14 games for the Ravens and caught 25 catches for 273 yards and one touchdown. And it showed Thursday night. The Canadiens, playing in their second game in as many days, however, got a good performance in the end from their backup goaltender as he filled in for an injured Olympic gold medallist . Peter Budaj stopped all three shooters in the shootout and David Desharnais scored the only goal, leading the Canadiens to a wild 6-5 victory. “He battled back in the second and third and in the shootout he was outstanding,” Canadiens coach Michel Therrien said of Budaj. Budaj, in his second straight start for injured starter Carey Price, stopped Penguins shooters James Neal and Sidney Crosby before denying Evgeni Malkins slap shot for the win. Desharnais, the third shooter for Montreal, slammed on the brakes at the top of the crease before sliding the puck by Marc-Andre Fleury. “I would like to have some goals back, but we scored five goals against Pittsburgh,” Budaj said. “We have to learn from the mistakes we made. We have to keep going and getting better.” Daniel Briere scored twice, once on the power play, and Max Pacioretty also scored with the man advantage, his 27th of the year. Brendan Gallagher netted his 15th for the Canadiens and Alexei Emelin also scored his second of the season. Budaj, who stopped 27 shots, made his second straight start after turning aside 28 shots during an overtime loss one day earlier against Detroit. “You can tell the bench guys wanted to battle back for him because he certainly worked hard,” Therrien said. He filled in for Price, who was named the top goaltender at the Olympic games after going 5-0 with a 0.59 goals-against average and two shutouts, leading Team Canada to a gold medal. Price, who aggravated a lower-body injury sustained in Sochi, will be re-evaluated Friday. “Credit to the team because they stuck with it, they battled for me and we got the two points,” Budaj said. Crosby, who leads the NHHL with 80 points, scored his 29th and added an assist.dddddddddddd Neal scored his 21st for his 300th career point and also had an assist, while Malkin provided two assists, both extending six-game point streaks. Olli Maatta scored his seventh of the season on the power play and had an assist, while Brandon Sutter had a short-handed goal, his 10th of the year. Deryk Engelland also scored his career-high fifth goal. “We worked hard,” Crosby said. “It was a little sloppy, and a lot of special teams. … Probably a tough first one for everybody to get into.” The teams were tied at 3 after two periods and both scored twice in the third, sending the game to overtime. Three of the four third-period goals were scored by special teams units, Sutter giving the Penguins a 4-3 lead with a short-handed breakaway goal and Crosby later putting Pittsburgh ahead 5-4 on the power play. Emelin tied it 24 seconds after Sutter gave the Penguins the initial lead and Briere sent the game to overtime with his second goal of the game. With the Canadiens trailing, the Penguins Tanner Glass was issued a five-minute major for a hit on Emelin. The call was elbowing, but video replays showed Emelins stick came up and hit him in the head. “Thats why I kind of followed through the way I did, to get his stick away from my face,” Glass said. “Its a hockey play, it happens. I can understand why he made the call.” The Canadiens cashed in anyway, Briere tying it with his second of the game when he feathered a back-door rebound behind Fleury, who made 24 saves.
