With the NHL Trade Deadline only weeks away, teams are making decisions on whether to buy or sell and deciding which players can make the biggest difference or hold the greatest value. Check out todays trade rumours and speculation from around the NHL beat. And follow TSN.ca each day until Deadline Day for all the updates. Hawks Circling Chicago Blackhawks GM Stan Bowman is still looking for help on defence leading up to the trade deadline. Jesse Rogers on ESPN. com reports there is nothing imminent though as there are currently alot more buyers than sellers with so many teams still in the playoff race. Bowman also said that he is comfortable with the current group is no deals can be made. The Blackhawks are currently giving up 2.92 goals per game which ranks 25th in the NHL and 14th in the Western Conference. On an Island The New York Islanders could be sellers by the trade deadline, but they dont have much to offer up for potential buyers says Craig Custance of ESPN.com. Goaltender Evgeni Nabokov and blueliners Mark Eaton and Steve Staios are among the names he says could be shopped. Forward PA Parenteau is also set to become an unrestricted free agent this summer and has been mentioned as potentially being on hsi way out, but the Isles would prefer to re-sign him. Uncertain Future Edmonton forward Ales Hemsky has said he would like to remain an Oiler but admits his future with the club seems uncertain reports John Mackinnon of the Edmonton Journal. He also says that it makes no sense for the Oilers to entertain any offers for Sam Gagner unless the package was overwhelming. Denver Defensive Depth The Colorado Avalanche will most likely deal one of their eight NHL caliber defensemen by or before the trade deadline says Adrian Dater of the Denver Post. Kyle Quincey and Shane OBrien are the most likeliest candidates to be moved. He also says that Colorado should look at trying to get former Avalanche player Chris Stewart back from St. Louis. wholesale Jerseys . “I just want to help, just want to have fun, just want to play,” Yakupov told reporters on Tuesday. The first overall pick from 2012 added that head coach Dallas Eakins doesnt trust him and something needs to be done. wholesale nfl jerseys . Headlining the 27 players were first-round NHL draftees Rasmus Ristolainen and Teuvo Teravainen. Both players are returnees from the 2013 Finnish World Junior team. http://www.wholesalenflchinajerseys.com/. Bjoerndalen, who had failed to win any major race for two years before Sochi, writes in a Facebook entry that he is “full of energy and inspiration” after winning the 10-kilometre sprint and mixed relay at last months Olympics. Cheap Jerseys . Gooden is expected to sign the deal and join the team in time for Thursdays game against the Toronto Raptors. Cheap Jerseys from china . Doneil Henry, the man who scored Toronto FCs last-gasp game winner Saturday, knows that probably better than anyone.NEW YORK — The entire season for the New York Mets boiled down to two dates on the calendar: “Super Tuesday” and panic Monday. Terry Collins is coming back confident better days lie ahead. “Maybe we can finish what we started,” he said. The manager received a two-year contract extension Monday with a club option for 2016, a move the Mets announced one day after finishing 74-88 for the second consecutive season. Collins previous deal was about to expire, but it became increasingly clear down the stretch that he likely would return. “In many ways, Terry had an outstanding year,” general manager Sandy Alderson said. “The team never quit, continued to play hard, continued to play with the resources it had at hand and finished as well as we could have expected.” Fielding an inexperienced lineup ravaged by injuries and trades, the 64-year-old Collins kept New York competitive all summer without many of his top players — including team captain David Wright, All-Star ace Matt Harvey and closer Bobby Parnell. Still, the rebuilding Mets were unable to overcome a 25-40 start and limped to their fifth straight losing record since moving into Citi Field. They edged Philadelphia for third place in the NL East after coming in fourth the previous four years. “We saw some bright things that happened this year with some of our young players. Obviously, weve got some outstanding young pitching coming,” Collins said. “Were going into spring training with very, very high expectations. Its time to put some wins on the board.” New York did just that during an encouraging stretch that began June 18, the day touted pitcher Zack Wheeler was called up from the minors and leadoff hitter Eric Young Jr. was obtained from Colorado. In a doubleheader dubbed “Super Tuesday” by a city tabloid, Harvey and Wheeler pitched the Mets to a sweep at NL East champion Atlanta. From there they went 33-26 through Aug. 20, while Youngs much-needed speed sparked a stagnant offence on his way to the National League stolen base crown. But the following Monday, Aug. 26, Harvey was shut down with a partially torn ligament in his right elbow that left his status for next season uncertain. He hopes to avoid Tommy John surgery with a strengthening and throwing program, though the Mets dont sound too optimistic. “Certainly losing Matt was a shock to the system, and I think emotionally weve all had to recover from that a little bit,” Alderson said. “Even if Matt doesnt have the surgery, its going to affect our plan.” The plan all along was to compete for a playoff spot in 2014. With about $40 million in player salaries coming off the payroll, the Mets expect to be active in free agency. Desperate for productive bats and a steady shortstop, New York could eye outfielders Shin-Soo Choo and Nelson Cruz. “Im really excited about what we migght be able to do this off-season,” Alderson said.dddddddddddd"Certainly well have more payroll flexibility than weve had since Ive been here." Alderson, Collins and chief operating officer Jeff Wilpon are part of the brain trust headed to Florida to begin organizational meetings Tuesday. Alderson said next years budget will be set early on. The Mets own the 10th selection in the June draft, which means they wouldnt have to forfeit it to sign a top-tier free agent who receives a qualifying offer from his previous club. The top 10 picks are protected, eliminating a significant concern. Eager to upgrade in many areas, the Mets nevertheless will keep in mind the bloated contracts they gave to injury-prone Johan Santana and Jason Bay. “Those are cautionary examples of what can happen,” Alderson said. “Its great to say, well, we have financial flexibility and then blow it on players deals that dont work out and put yourself right back in the same situation we were in before. At the same time, at some point youve got to go for it. So, having flexibility is great. But at some point youve got to put yourself on the line. And I think what were going to try to do is balance the level of our commitments with the desire to continue to maintain some flexibility going forward. Not just next year, but years after that.” Trading some of their ballyhooed minor league pitching might be one way for the Mets to add offence. But that route can be risky. “I find it tough sometimes to trade young guys. And I think that fans identify with the young guys,” Alderson said. “Having said that, were at a point now where we are in a position to make a deal for an established player (by) giving up some resources. But we have to be careful that we dont turn a strength into a weakness. And with Matt out, it makes it a little more difficult to give up the two or three guys that we know are right on the cusp.” Alderson was encouraged by New Yorks .500 record over the final 100 games and acknowledged that was a significant factor in the decision to keep Collins, who is 225-261 in three seasons as Mets manager. His entire coaching staff also was retained. “Weve got the base. Now weve just got to make sure guys play up to their potential,” Collins said. “We have the players to do it. Theyve got to buy into it.” The team went 41-40 on the road this year, but both men were dismayed by a 33-48 mark at home that left the Mets a dubious 103-140 at Citi Field over the past three seasons. “I think part of it is the player mix,” Alderson said. “Part of it has got to be something to do with the home environment here, whether thats here at the ballpark, whether its in the clubhouse, whether its on 45th and Sixth Avenue. I dont know. There are a variety of factors that were going to have to look at hard, because we cant allow this to continue.” cheap nfl jerseys wholesale jerseys ’ ’ ’

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. – Sean Rodriguez of the Tampa Bay Rays has grounded into a triple play for the second time in his career. The Rays had runners on first and second in the second inning Thursday night against the Yankees. Rodriguez hit a hard grounder off CC Sabathia that rookie third baseman Yangervis Solarte fielded, and he stepped on the bag to retire Evan Longoria. Solarte threw to second baseman Brian Roberts to get Wil Myers. The play ended when Scott Sizemore, playing at first base for the first time in his career, made a nice scoop of Roberts relay throw to get Rodriguez. It was the first triple play hit into by the Rays since Rodriguez grounded into one on Aug. 16, 2011, at Boston. Sabathia was pitching the previous time the Yankees turned a triple play. That happened on April 12, 2013, against Baltimore. nfl jerseys china . Sopoaga hit the upright with his first shot at goal from 15 metres. He then kicked nine goals in succession — two conversions and seven penalties — before being replaced in the 62nd minute, three points short of the Highlanders record for most points in a match. cheap jerseys from china . The Maple Leafs are three points behind Columbus for the last playoff spot in the East with only three games left on their schedule. You can listen to the game live on TSN 1050 starting at 7:30pm et/4:30 pm pt. http://www.cheapjerseyssafe.com/. Agent Mike McCartney confirmed via Twitter on Sunday that Mendenhall had decided to end his playing career after six NFL seasons, all but one of them with the Pittsburgh Steelers. jerseys from china . Wrights first stint with Milwaukee was on a 10-day contract from March 14-23. He played in two games, averaging six points and two rebounds in 16. wholesale jerseys . After losing the first two games of this set in Arlington the Tigers showed some signs of life on Tuesday, as Miguel Cabrera, Victor Martinez and Jhonny Peralta all homered and Austin Jackson went 3-for-5 with a run scored and an RBI for the AL Central champs in a 5-2 win.LAS VEGAS, Nev. – Phil Macks penalty kick with no time remaining completed a remarkable comeback Sunday as Canada defeated Samoa 22-19 to finish third at the USA Sevens — its best ever finish at an IRB Sevens rugby event. Down 19-0 early in the second half, the Canadian men reeled off 22 straight points to secure the win. “It showed a lot of character,” said Canadian coach Geraint John. "The players at halftime were composed. Everybody was composed. We knew what we had to do and they executed. “Thats what I liked about the whole weekend. When we executed I thought we were a very very good side and we showed that we deserved to be in that top bracket. Now the hardest part is weve got to continue and move on from here.” Canada stood 13th in the standings after the first three stops on the nine-event HSBC Sevens World Series. But it showed grit throughout the three-day tournament at Sam Boyd Stadium, staging one rally after another, and moved up to 11th spot. It marked the first time since 2000 and only the second time in IRB Sevens play that Canada had reached the semifinals of the top-tier Cup competition. South Africa, appearing in its third straight final, beat New Zealand 14-7 to win its second tournament. The Springboks downed the All Blacks 17-14 last time out in Port Elizabeth, South Africa. The victory moved South Africa ahead of New Zealand atop the series standings. England held on to edge Australia 26-24 in the consolation Plate final and place fifth. Fiji finished ninth in thumping Kenya 35-0 in the Bowl final and the host U.S. blanked Spain 31-0 to win the Shield and finish 13th. Going into the third-place game, Samoa had gone 31-3 against Canada in past matches. And the Pacific Islanders were rampant early on as Fomai Ah Ki scored two tries to give the two-time tournament champions a 12-0 lead at the half. Reupena Levasa scored soon after the restart to extend the Samoan lead to 19-0. Then the Canadian comeback began. Conor Trainors try cut the deficit to 19-7 before captain John Moonlight bulled his way over the goal-line to make it 19-14. Mack then crossed the line in the corner only to see hiss conversion attempt hit the post, leaving it knotted at 19-19 with 30 seconds remaining.dddddddddddd. Mack completed the comeback, slotting his drop goal through the posts after Samoa was penalized some 20 metres in front of its posts as time ran out. Mack finished with 12 points on a try, penalty and two conversions. “Once we got that roll going in the beginning of the second half, I dont think there was really any stopping us,” said John. The fine Canadian showing came despite a string of injuries that kept captain Nathan Hirayama, Sean Duke, Ciaran Hearn, Mike Fuailefau, Lucas Hammond, Adam Kleeberger and Pat Parfrey out of the lineup. Canada opened the day with a 26-7 loss to New Zealand in the Cup semifinal. The semifinal against New Zealand was a tough ask for Canada. The All Blacks career record against Canada was 23-0 going into the game, with New Zealand outscoring the Canadians 726-151. Canada got a break with suspensions to New Zealands George Tilsley (one match) and Sam Dickson (eight) for foul play in its last pool match against Fiji. The underdog Canadians opened the scoring against New Zealand with a converted Mack try after an attack by Moonlight. But the All Blacks, capitalizing on Canadian defensive mistakes, responded with a try by Scott Curry before Bryce Heem scored on the stroke of halftime for a 2-7 lead. New Zealand continued to dominate possession in the second half and the Canadians found themselves on the back foot after Australian referee Matt OBrien called a string of penalties at the breakdown. Tim Mikkelson and Heem added New Zealand tries to make the final score 26-7, with Gillies Kaka adding three conversions. “Theyre a good team,” New Zealand coach Gordon Tietjens said of Canada. “A tough semifinal.” On Saturday, Canada rallied from 14-0 down to beat France 17-14 in the Cup quarter-final after recovering from a 12-0 deficit to defeat Wales 21-19. On Friday, Canada downed Kenya 17-15 and lost to South Africa 29-0. A Canadian womens development side called the Maple Leafs defeated the Aptoella Angels 17-5 to win the companion Las Vegas Invitational tournament. COMMERCE CITY, Colo. - Vincente Sanchez scored in the 20th minute, leading the Colorado Rapids to a 1-0 victory over the Los Angeles Galaxy on Saturday night. Sanchez, who sat out the second half with a sore left knee, curled a shot between two defenders to record his team-leading fifth goal. The goal gave Colorado (4-2-2) its first lead before the 60th minute this season. “There were a lot of people out in front,” Sanchez said. “I had no choice but to put the ball on the back post.” Clint Irwin posted his third shutout. “Just a complete game by everyone,” Colorado coach Pablo Mastroeni said. “The whole back wall did a good job of keeping the ball in front of them.” Robbie Keane missed wide of the right post on a penalty kick in the 62nd minute for Los Angeles (2-2-2), which had its four-game unbeaten streak snapped. “We missed a penalty kick,” Los Angeles coach Bruce Arena said. “You cant do that.” Landon Donovan failed to become the career MLS scoring leader, remaining tied with Jeff Cunningham with 134 goals. ORLANDO, Fla. — Billy Donovans bench came up big, bailing out top-seeded Florida in a tight game against what was supposed to be an overmatched opponent. Dorian Finney-Smith scored 16 points, most of them on dunks, and the Gators used a second-half surge to beat No. 16 seed Albany 67-55 in the NCAA tournament Thursday. The Gators (33-2) showed some vulnerability, though, while extending their school-record winning streak to 27 games. Donovans team sleepwalked through the first half, swapping the lead back and forth with the pesky Great Danes, but Floridas bench provided a much-needed spark. Finney-Smith, the Southeastern Conferences sixth man of the year, was 6-of-10 shooting and tough to handle in the post. Freshman guard Kasey Hill, who wasnt sure he would be able to play because of turf toe, chipped in 10 points off the bench and was dynamic on the open floor. Patric Young finished with 10 points and 10 rebounds, his first double-double of the season. Casey Prather (16 points) and Scottie Wilbekin (10) also reached double figures for Florida, which will play ninth-seeded Pittsburgh in the South Region on Saturday. DJ Evans led Albany (19-15) with 21 points and seven rebounds. He set the tone for the Great Danes early, but couldnt do enough to pull off the most elusive enough in college basketball. Floridas win made No. 1 seeds 117-0 against 16 seeds since the NCAA tournament expanded to 64 teams in 1985. But this one was far from a lopsided affair. The first half couldnt have gone much better for Albany, which was back on the court less than 48 hours after the programs first NCAA tournament win. The Great Danes, who beat Mount St. Marys in the First Four in Daytona, Ohio, made 10 of their first 15 shots and hung with Florida. Albany did an impressive job breaking Floridas press. And coach Will Brown had a clear game plan on defence: Dont let Michael Frazier II get any clean looks from 3-point range, beg Prather to take jumpers and sag in the post on centre Young. The Gators took the bait — for a while. Frazier was scoreless in the first half, Prather turned into a jump shooter and Young was missing early on. But Donovan adjusted, like hes done so many other times this season, and got Florida rolling. Wilbekin started driving and dishing, creating easy baskets for Young and Finney-Smith at the rim. Finney-Smith had six consecutive points that seemed to get the SEC champs going, and Prather followed with a three-point play. Floridas final 10 baskets of the first half were in the paint. Still, Donovan was livid at halftime and ripped his players for a lack of defence. They responded with a 9-0 run early — spearheaded by defence — in the second half that turned out to be the difference. Young started it with a three-point play. Hill followed with a driving layup and then added two free throws after a turnover. Will Yeguete got another steal, and Finney-Smiths emphatic dunk capped the spurt. It was exactly what Florida needed. The Gators pretty much held on from there, making enough post plays and free throws to keep Albany at bay. For Florida, the NCAA tournament has been the goal all season. But as the wins mounted, they turned their attention toward winning a national title. Theyve looked capable much of the season, becoming the first team in SEC history to finish the regular season 18-0 and then won SEC tournament by pulling out tight games against fellow NCAA tournament teams Tennessee and Kentucky. But their performance Thursday left Donovan and many bracket managers shaking their heads. wholesale jerseys . In the eyes of Heat coach Erik Spoelstra, the two-time defending NBA champions pretty much botched the whole thing. wholesale nfl jerseys . Alexandre Bilodeau captured Canadas first gold medal at the 2010 Olympics, while Charles Hamelin was the Canadian teams only multi gold medallist in Vancouver. Erik Guay narrowly missed the Olympic podium four years ago, but hes Canadas most decorated World Cup alpine skier. The next honour one of them could add to an already illustrious career is Canadas flag-bearer for the Sochi Olympics. On Thursday in Ottawa, the Canadian Olympic Committee will announce who will carry the Maple Leaf into the Sochi opening ceremonies, and Bilodeau, Hamelin and Guay, all leaders in their respective sports, are all strong candidates. “Just being among those, its a great honour for me because those are great athletes and there are many more athletes that deserve to carry the flag and deserve to be in the front row when it comes to Canada and to be role models,” Bilodeau told The Canadian Press in Montreal on Wednesday. “It would be a tremendous honour to do that for my country and well see (Thursday), but its definitely something very special to be flag-bearer and whomever its going to be, were going to be proud.” When asked if hed been tipped to be in Ottawa, Bilodeau laughed and said “I havent been contacted yet, so if its already decided, Im not the one.” Bilodeau won moguls gold on the second day of the Games, and the image of the freestyle skier celebrating with his brother Frederic is one of the most enduring of Vancouver. Hamelin claimed two of Canadas record-setting 14 gold medals, but even more remarkable is the fact the short-track speedskater, whos also an eight-time world champion, won them within half an hour of each other, winning the 500 metres before returning to the track as part of the victorious 5,000-metre relay. Guay posted a pair of fifth-place finishes in Vancouver, in the downhill and super-G, missing a medal in super-G by just three hundredths of a second. In December, he won his 21st World Cup medal, breaking the Canadian record for podium performances held by Steve Podborski. Guay will be in Kitzbuehel, Austria, on Thursday, where hes racing in a World Cup. Canadas flag-bearer traditionally generates plenty of conversation, and this time is no different, with Canadian hockey stars Sidney Crosby and Hayley Wickenheiser garnering much support. Crosby, who created one of Vancouvers golden moments when he scored the winner in the final versus the U.S., isnt expected to be in Sochi for the opening ceremonies as his Pittsburgh Penguins have a game that night versus the New York Rangers. While Bruins defenceman Zdeno Chara is missing two of Bostons NHL games to carry the flag for Slovakia, when asked about the possibility of carrying Canadas flag, Crosby said last weekend “It hasnt been brought up (by the Canadian Olympic Committee).” Wickenheiser, meanwhile, is Canadas biggest womens star and a pioneer of the game who will make her fifth Olympic appearance. According to Hockey Canada, the womens team will march in the Feb. 7 opening ceremonies, despite playing their opening game the following night versus Switzerland. Wickenheiser, however, was a participant in the 2010 opening ceremonies - she read the athletes oath. Plus, womens hockey player Danielle Goyette carried the flag into the opening ceremonies in 2006 in Turin, Italy. Long-track speedskater Clara Hughes carried the flag in the 2010 opening ceremonies while figure skater Joannie Rochette, who captured bronze just days after the death of her mom, was chosen to carry it out. Other favourites for Sochi include figure skaters Tessa Virtue and Scott Moir, who won Canadas first ice dance gold medal in Vancouver, and three-time world champion Patrick Chan. With the new team event starting the day before the opening ceremonies, however, Virtue and Moir have said they wont march. Two-time world champion Kaillie Humphries, who teamed up with Heather Moyse in Vancouver to win Canadas first ever womens bobsled medal, is another favourite. She and Moyse will be gunning for gold again in Sochi. And long-track speedskater Christine Nesbitt also won gold in Vancouver, and is a seven-time world champion and has won a whopping 39 World Cup titles. Theres a Facebook pace supporting skier Larisa Yurkiw for flag-bearer that has over 3,500 likes. Yurkiw missed the Vancouver Games after suffering a bad knee injury in 2009, and then was forced to go pounding on doors for financial support after she was cut from the national team program. Yurkiw bounced back to qualify for Canadas Sochi-bound team. Each sport nominates an athlete as a candidate for flag-bearer. But some athletes see the responsibility as a distraction. Diver Alexandre Despatie told reporters before the 2012 London Games that he would decline any offer to carry the flag. “Its a great distraction, although it is the greatest honour an athlete can receive,” the two-time Olympic silver medallist said. Moguls skier Jean-Luc Brassard finished fourth at the 1998 Nagano Olympics, and blamed his disappointing performance on the fact hed carried the flag a day earlier. Among other recent flag-bearers named recently: Japan selected womens curler Ayumi Ogasawara, Italy chose two-time Olympic mens luge champion Armin Zoeggeler, and Spain will hand its flag to figure skater Javier Fernandez. wholesale jerseys . On Tuesday, they did it again. Roy Hibbert scored 22 points and Lance Stephenson fell just short of his fourth triple double this season, helping the Pacers hold off Torontos late charge for an 86-79 victory that allowed them to keep the NBAs best record. Lowry joined TSN 1050 on Monday to discuss his personal growth, what was going through his mind on his final second drive and whether his future plans include staying in Toronto. “That last play will be my summertime grind,” Lowry said of his final shot which was blocked by Paul Pierce in the lane as time expired. http://www.chinajerseyswholesale.us.com/soccer. "When we were taking about it, Sidney wanted to make sure it was OK with [Toews], just for the fact he won a couple of Cups,” Babcock said after the Wings morning skate ahead of Wednesday nights game with the Blackhawks. “Hes held in high regard, to say the least, and hes a huge part of the reason why they win as much as they do.” Toews, for his part, thought Crosbys gesture was a flattering one. “For Sidney to ask guys for approval, I dont think he needed to do that, but it sshows the kind of guy he is,” Toews said.dddddddddddd Toews went as so far as to suggest that Babcock revealed this discussion just to be polite. “Everybody knows Sidney is the guy,” said Toews. “Im just honored to be in the conversation for the captaincy. One way or the other, Im excited to accept a role like that. If its more of a leadership role, Im excited for the challenge.” Babcock believes that Toews would have made for a deserving captain, as well. “Hes earned the right to be a captain with Canada: two Cups, Olympic gold,” said Babcock. “I dont know what else hes won. It seems more than that. Hes a pro who does it right every day. Hes a 200-footer. To me, hes an impressive, impressive man.” Toews and Nashville Predators captain Shea Weber will serve as alternate captains for Canada next month in Sochi. Got a question on rule clarification, comments on rule enforcements or some memorable NHL stories? Kerry wants to answer your emails at cmonref@tsn.ca! Kerry, First off, I love the Q&As that you do (even though I often wasnt your biggest fan when I was watching games growing up… just kidding… kind of). In the Pittsburgh Penguins and Tampa Bay Lightning game Saturday night, I saw the official, referee Gord Dwyer, help Steven Stamkos to the bench after his skate blade broke. I have never seen this before in the NHL. Shortly after, Alex Killorn, the player who came on for Stamkos, scored the game-tying goal. I can understand picking up a loose stick on the ice, but helping a player to the bench during play seems unfair and I have never seen another official do that. Is this commonplace and I just dont see it more often, or was an unfair advantage given to Stamkos and the Lightning in this situation? Best, Brock R.Cedar Falls, Iowa - Hi Kerry,I am sure you have had numerous emails about this incident but go on and choose mine for the column and show the worldwide profile NHL l now enjoys, even in Ireland. I was watching the Penguins and Lightning game Saturday and was more than perplexed by an incident that occured late in the third period. The incident resulted in a goal for the Lightning as a result of referee, Gord Dwyer, helping Steven Stamkos off the ice when he had an issue with his skate. Indeed one could argue Stamkos interfered, albeit minimally, with Paul Martin as he left the ice. My understanding was either Stamkos could make his own way off the ice, be assisted by line mates or failing that the referee would blow the play dead as he would for an injury and the resulting faceoff would take place outside the Pittsburgh defensive zone? What is your view on this? Darragh McMahon, Ireland. - Kerry, Im sure you got more than one email on this, but its a bizarre play. How is the ref allowed to help a player (Stamkos) off the ice instead of blowing the play dead, and have that player bump into a player (Paul Martin) on the opposing team who is in the middle of the play? People want to say the NHL doesnt give stars preferential treatment, but all you have to do is play that clip. Thanks for reading and keep up the great column. Nick - Hi Kerry What is your opinion on an official pushing Stamkos over to the bench after one of his skates broke? Thanks for your input. John Dickie - The other night Im watching Penguins/Lightning and Stamkos loses his skate blade and the referee gives him a push halfway across the ice…what do you think about this and do you think its okay? Thanks, Dylan Rogers - Dear Fans (With special welcome to Darragh McMahon all the way from Ireland): This certainly is an unusual situation (check out the viz) and magnified by the fact that Tyler Johnson (Steven Stamkos replacement) set up the Lightning power play goal scored by Alex Killorn which tied the game with 3:10 remaining in regulation. Gord Dwyer is a good and conscientious Referee. Gord is also a really good person. The Refs human instinct here was to assist a player that was placed in harms way once he witnessed Steven Stamkos slip, slide and stumble toward a potential groin injury (or worse) some 100 feet from his bench. This wasnt Star treatment that was being extended by Dwyer, but legitimate concern for a players well-being. The courtesy of providing two strides and a shove by the Ref was creative and would have been done for all the right reasons. With hindsight being 20-20 the end result supports the claim by some that, “No good deed goes unpunished!” You must first understand that theres no official policy on assisting a player that has sustained an injury or broken a skate and is attempting to make his way to the bench under his own power while handing a player that has lost his stick is a definite no-no. A policy might be instituted as a result of this intervention by Referee Dwyer but that remains to be seen. I will tell you that I have instinctively helped more than one injured player to his bench as play continued and even one with a broken skate that had no adverse effect. I know that many other Officials have done the same with regard to injured players. We not only want to ensure the player gets medical attention quickly but also to keep the play moving for game flow. Rule 8 advises us that play can be stopped immediately when a serious injury has been sustained; otherwise the Referee must wait for a change in puck possession unless his team is in a scoring position. While this was not an injury situation in the moment, Referee Dwyer might have decided to be proactive to prevent an injury from occurring. How can we fault him if that were the case? Had Steven Stamkos laid on the ice play could have been stopped or once the puck cleared the Pens zone an offside might result in a whistle with Stamkos still down. The Pens dumped the puck all the way down into the Lightning corner at the moment Steven Stamkos broke his skate blade. With the dump time and space was created for Stamkos to attempt his slide to the bench and for the Referee to allow his instincts to take over and assist. It certainly would have seemed innocent enough at the time for any Ref. Rule 63 (delay of game) states that play shall not be stopped nor the game delayed by reasons of adjustments to clothing, equipment, skates or sticks. This typically applies to situations when play has already been halted to avoid delays but the broad wording might also stretch to when play is actually in progress. At some point, common sense would take over and play would be stopped if a player could not make his way to the bench. Due to the ultimate scoring of the goal it is easy to suggest that an unfair advantage was offered by the Referee to the Tampa Bay Lightning. I believe that in this situation the Referee acted creatively and instinctively to assist a player that was in a difficult position without disrupting the flow of play. Unless Stephen Walkom issues a firm “hands off” policy to the Officials in situations such as this (hindsight aside), what Referee Gord Dwyer did speaks to the humanness of the Referees and Linesmen that place the well being of players first. In fact, cranky would best describe the Celtics mood as they packed for a trip home to play Milwaukee on Wednesday. “It was a win, thats all it was for us,” Boston coach Doc Rivers said. wholesale nfl jerseys . — Dwight Howard vs.PITTSBURGH — A violent collision with Jacksonville running back Maurice Jones-Drews churning knees wont be enough to keep Pittsburgh Steelers safety Troy Polamalu out of the lineup. Coach Mike Tomlin said Tuesday the 2010 NFL Defensive Player of the Year is “good to go” after passing a concussion test. The team removed Polamalu from the game midway through the fourth quarter of Sundays 17-13 win over the Jaguars with concussion-like symptoms. Tomlin believes Polamalu was injured while diving at Jones-Drews legs on a third-and-one play. Polamalu stuffed Jones-Drew no gain, forcing the Jaguars to punt. The All-Pro safety watched Pittsburghs final two defensive series from the sidelines as the Steelers (4-2) held on to win their second straight. “We anticipate him practising tomorrow and moving on throughout the week like everyone else on our football team,” Tomlin said. The Steelers initially termed Polamalus condition as a “very mild” concussion and took him out of the game as a precaution. Polamalu kept his helmet on save for a brief phone conversation with his wife. The call is technically in violation of league rules, though Tomlin doesnt expect Polamalu — who declined to speak to reporters after the game — to be disciplined. Tomlin said it was important for Polamalu, who has a history of concussions, to assure his family he was OK. “He wasnt checking his bank account,” Tomlin said. The Steelers will need Polamalu if they want to keep Arizona wide receiver Larry Fitzgerald in check. Fitzgerald torched the Steelers for 127 yards and two touchdowns in the 2009 Super Bowl, though Pittsburgh rallied for a 27-23 victory. “Hes the best in the world at what he does,” Tomlin said of Fitzgerald. So, arguably, is Polamalu. The nine-year veteran is second on the team with 40 tackles for the NFLs top-ranked defence. Tomlin is pleased with how the defence is performing, but knows stiffer tests lay ahead. The four teams the Steelers have beaten rank 19th (Tennnessee), 30th (Seattle), 31st (Indianapolis) and 32nd (Jacksonville) in the league in yards per game.dddddddddddd Even so, Pittsburgh hasnt been dominant. The Steelers have collected an NFL-low two turnovers through six games and barely escaped upsets at the hands of the lowly Colts and Jaguars, who are a combined 1-11. Tomlin would like to see more “signature” plays from the defence but not at the price of being out of position. “What were not going to do is take calculated risks,” Tomlin said. They dont see one in clearing Polamalu to play. “He met with our neurosurgeon,” Tomlin said, “and theyre very comfortable with where he is.” The Steelers will once again play without linebacker James Harrison (eye), nose tackle Casey Hampton (knee) and defensive end Aaron Smith (foot). Guard Doug Legursky will be out several weeks after suffering a dislocated toe against Jacksonville, though the line should be helped by the return of Chris Kemoeatu and Marcus Gilbert. Kemoeatu has missed two straight games with a knee injury while Gilbert didnt play against the Jaguars because of an issue with his left shoulder. Tomlin is hopeful both players can help an offence that has only put together two solid halves once in the seasons first six weeks. Pittsburgh dominated Jacksonville for two quarters on Sunday, piling up 315 yards. The Steelers managed just 70 in the second half as quarterback Ben Roethlisberger completed just one pass and was sacked three times, allowing the Jaguars to get back in the game. “We werent up to stuff,” Tomlin said. The Steelers will need to be on Sunday against the desperate Cardinals (1-4). Pittsburgh is just 1-2 on the road and easily could be winless if not for a game-winning drive in the final minutes against the Colts. “Its very obvious weve performed to a winning level at home, we havent done so on the road,” Tomlin said. “Weve got to perform better on the road than we have.” cheap nfl jerseys wholesale jerseys ’ ’ ’

Tyler Toffoli is doing his best to leave everyone behind him in the league scoring race. Toffoli scored once and set up another as the Ottawa 67s defeated the visiting Erie Otters 6-1 in Ontario Hockey League action. The 19-year-old winger has scored in five straight games and the two points Sunday gives him a league-leading 44 goals and 87 points in 53 games. He currently has four more goals than Seth Griffith of the London Knights, who sits second in scoring, and a nine-point lead over Michael Sgarbossa of the Sudbury Wolves, who is second in overall points. Ryan Van Stralen, Shane Prince, Dalton Smith, Nicholas Foglia and Cody Ceci also scored for the 67s (35-15-6), who now sit one point behind the Brampton Battalion for top spot in the Eastern Conference, while Michal Cajkovsky and Remy Giftopoulos chipped in with two assists each. Jake Evans scored the lone goal for the Otters (8-42-5), who sit last in league standings, as Adam Pelech picked up the assist. Michael Nishi made 36 saves for the win, and the games first star, while Devin Williams turned away 41 shots in defeat. Ottawa went 0 for 1 on the power play as Erie failed to score on nine opportunities with the man advantage. Elsewhere in the OHL, it was: Brampton 5, Sudbury 4 (OT); London 5, Kitchener 1; and Saginaw 4, Owen Sound 2. At Ottawa, the 67s jumped out to an early 3-0 lead in the first period. Foglia opened the scoring at 7:08, Ceci followed him up with a goal at 11:40 and 30 seconds later Prince added another. Evans put Erie on the board with a goal at 10:21 of the second period but Smith regained Ottawas three-goal advantage by scoring with 53 seconds remaining in the period. Toffoli scored shorthanded 2:15 into the third and Van Stralen added one more at 14:34 - Battalion 5 Wolves 4 (OT) At Brampton, Ont., Mitchell Porowski scored the winning goal on a penalty shot with 58 seconds remaining in overtime as the Battalion (30-18-9) picked up their third straight win by edging Sudbury (30-20-5). - Knights 5 Rangers 1 At London, Ont., Brett Welychka scored twice while twin brothers Matt and Ryan Rupert chipped in with two assists each as the Knights (42-12-1) beat Kitchener (36-17-2), who have now dropped three games in a row. - Spirit 4 Attack 2 At Saginaw, Mich., Clint Windsor stopped 31-of-33 shots, earning the games first star, and Josh Shalla scored a goal in his eighth straight game as the Spirit (27-23-7) snapped Owen Sounds (28-22-7) six-game winning streak. The first overall pick from 2012 added that head coach Dallas Eakins doesnt trust him and something needs to be done. . PETERSBURG, Fla.MONTREAL – One by one did they file off the ice at the Bell Centre as Max Pacioretty and the Montreal Canadiens celebrated victory just steps away from the since-vacated crease of Jonathan Bernier. The good saw the Maple Leafs pick up at least a point for the 14th time in the past 16 games (11-2-3), the bad saw opportunity to draw even with a division rival foiled on yet another blown third period lead. Rather than depart the grand old city of Montreal with a share of second place in the Atlantic division, Toronto heads home three points back of their Original-Six rival with an eye on what went well and what mightve been. “Were disappointed to not get the other one,” said Dion Phaneuf of the point lost in overtime. “But we did a lot of good things.” The effort was vastly improved from a post-Olympic dud in Long Island two nights earlier, one that saw them dribble away a pair of third period leads before falling in the extra frame to a struggling Islanders squad. It didnt start well. Montreal scored twice on this night before the Leafs had even managed a shot on goal in what was a sluggish opening frame for both teams. But from there, the visitors gradually wrestled some control of the hockey game, scoring three unanswered, all from the scorching duo of James van Riemsdyk and Phil Kessel. Kessel broke a 2-2 tie with his 33rd of the year – the second of two in a span of just over two minutes – dancing around Pacioretty just outside the Montreal blue-line before beating Peter Budaj with a laser far-side. “We came back from it,” said head coach Randy Carlyle of the early deficit. “We found ways to create offence and I thought we had a majority of the puck time probably from the second period on so there were a lot of positives in the game.” Just as they failed to do against the Islanders, the Leafs could not hold a third period lead, this one of increased importance opposite a foe just steps ahead in the playoff race. Tim Gleason took the first of three consecutive (and certainly contested) Toronto penalties, whistled for interference on Brian Gionta along the wall in the defensive zone. The maneuver (one that drew ire from Carlyle) proved costly as P.K. Subban fired a one-time blast short-side beyond Bernier, evening the score at three. “We had a one-goal lead and we took three straight penalties,” said Carlyle afterward. “Now we can challenge the validity of the penalties one way or another, but we took three straight penalties.” The last of which was just as unlikely as the two that preceded it. Racing out of his crease to protect a puck that was up for grabs, Bernier was dealt a delay of game offence, the second of two such penalties for the Leafs in overtime. After wiping out the first to Kessel, the Toronto penalty kill could not ultimately hold the fort, surrendering a second power-play goal to the Canadiens. Subban loaded up in this instance for another one-time blast, only his stick shattered, the puck squirting to Andrei Markov and eventually Pacioretty in the slot for the overtime winner. It was the summation of a brief, two-game road trip that could have and (probably should have considering the circumstance) yielded a full four points, valuable points lost in an ever-tightening playoff race. And so while they could point to the good of the evening, there was certainly an undercurrent of what was actually lost and that was an opportunity to catch the Habs. “We turned the tide of the hockey game in our favour for the majority of it and were going to take the positives out of it and move on,” said Carlyle. “Were .500 on the road (trip) which in this situation isnt great – wed like to have won both hockey games in our minds, but this is the way it goes.” Five Points 1. Dynamic Duo They sizzled before the Olympics, during the Olympics and now after the Olympics. Kessel, who had a goal and an assist for the third straight game, continues to boil at a heat hes never before attained in the NHL. The 26-year-old now has 13 goals and 31 points in the past 17 games and 17 points in the past nine games alone. “Ive said it for quite a few years now that Ive played with him, I think hes one of the top players in the National Hockey League,” said Phaneuf. “Hes proving it year and year again that hes extremely skilled (and) he can put the puck in the net with the best of the goal-scorers in the NHL. I think that hes having a tremendous year and hes a huge part of our team and why weve had success.” Tied for the Olympic lead in scoring and now with 69 points this season, Kessel is alone in second place to Sidney Crosby in the scoring race. He is four goals from matching a soon-to-be broken career-high of 37. James van Riemsdyk meanwhile continues to fly himself. The 24-year-old, who matched a career-high with three assists in Long Island and finished third in Olympic scoring, scored twice against Montreal. His first of the night and second shorthanded marker this season was a thing of beauty. Racing past Subban on a failed Markov feed, he burst in alone on Budaj, tucking a nifty backhand through the five-hole. “At first I wasnt even sure if I was going to even go for it, but I realized that they looked pretty tired and just kind of took off and went from there,” he said. Totaling 52 points on the year, van Riemsdyk is up to 24th in the scoring race. 2. Officiating Concerns Carlyle didnt hide his displeasure with the officials after the Pacioretty goal, barking at them as he left the ice in defeat. What stuck most in his craw was the call on Gleason which preceded Subbans game-tying goal. The 31-year-old Gleason stepped in the way of Gionta just ahead of the puck and was hauled off for it. “I was under the impression that if it was one one-thousand yoou could take the players body if the player tries to make a play on it,” Carlyle said.dddddddddddd “I just said how do you call that in a 3-2 game and I figured I really didnt even hit him, I just kind of one-armed (him),” said Gleason of his conversation with the officials afterward, not having seen the replay himself. Further concerns were raised when Kessel was called for delay of game in the final moments of regulation. He attempted to ring a puck off the glass – and did in the minds of his teammates – but was called for the penalty anyway. “Maybe youd like to see that video review for that because you cant get that wrong at that time of the game,” said van Riemsdyk. “Its definitely a tough one. Couple other ones that were a little debatable.” The last in dispute saw Bernier jump out of his crease in overtime, snatching hold of a loose puck from Daniel Briere and freezing play. “I havent been called for that ever I guess,” said the 25-year-old. “I dont even know whats the rule, how far you can actually get it and freeze it.” The rule in this case is clear (63.2). “If the goalkeeper races out of his crease in an attempt to beat the attacking player to the puck and instead of playing the puck jumps on the puck causing a stoppage of play, this shall be a minor penalty for delay of game.” 3. Slight Dip Jonathan Bernier entered the Olympic break on a roll, winning five of his last six starts while stopping 105 of the final 109 shots he faced. But in two starts post-Olympics he has looked rather ordinary, yielding five goals to the Islanders on Thursday (without much help) and four more to his hometown Canadiens on Saturday. “I thought it was actually a tough game for me,” he said of a rare night with fewer than 30 shots against, Montreal mustering just 29. “They had a lot of bodies in front of me. They were hitting me quite a bit. It was a tough game. And thats one thing that when youre away from the game thats the hard part for a goalie is to find that seam and find that puck through traffic.” Never in his NHL career has Bernier played as much as he has this season for the Leafs, starting his 40th game on Saturday. His performance as the no. 1 down the stretch under such strain will certainly be worth monitoring and key for a club that has relied on great goaltending from the Laval, Quebec native on many a nights. 4. Bollands Mountain Climb Dave Bolland missed his 47th game Saturday because of a once-severed and now healing tendon in his left ankle. The four-month recovery process has been taxing on the 27-year-old, who is close to a return, but not quite there yet. “Its sort of a slow mountain climb for me this whole rehab,” said Bolland. “Its been painful and slow and grueling. Im ready to get back on the ice as soon as possible.” Bolland is listed as day-to-day and according to head coach, Randy Carlyle, is at the stage where he, the player, will decide when exactly he is ready to return. For the Mimico native, who played in 15 games for the Leafs in October, its about being up to speed with the fundamentals, areas such as being strong in the corners and fully able to handle defensive responsibilities at full speed. “I dont want to be a liability out there when transition comes around and Im the one thats last getting back and I cant back-check because of my ankle,” he said. “I want to be sure that when Im out there Im going at a 100 per cent and Im ready to play.” He doesnt appear to be at that point yet, even suffering a setback in practice earlier in the week. “Thats just the way these injuries heal,” Carlyle said. "Its a severe injury to a vital part in his body, specifically a tendon in his foot. When you put a skate on it, theres a lot more complications than just you and I walking around. Hes putting skates on and putting a lot of pressure in that area. “Basically its up to him. Hes got to be the guy that tells us hes ready to go.” 5. Hollands Lace-Bite It was the final game of January and Peter Holland played 11 minutes in a 6-3 win over Florida. He was in pain the whole night, but didnt think much of it. “I went to sleep and woke up in the morning and could hardly put any weight on it,” Holland said of his foot. The 23-year-old had suffered from lace bite before (which causes pain from skates being too tight) but nothing quite like this. “It was just released as lace-bite but it ended up getting pretty badly infected,” said Holland, recalled by the Leafs for Saturdays game against the Canadiens. “I was in the hospital for four or five days with an IV in my arm trying to look after it. It was pretty painful for a while there. I was on crutches (and) in a walking boot and couldnt put too much weight on it.” Holland missed four games with the injury before being assigned to the Toronto Marlies for two games. He played just under 12 minutes against Montreal, centering a line with Mason Raymond and Nik Kulemin. Stats-Pack 31 – Points for Phil Kessel in the past 17 games. 14-14 – Goal differential between the Leafs and Canadiens this season. 30:34 – Ice-time for Dion Phaneuf on Saturday, a season-high. 13-6-3 – Toronto record versus the Atlantic division. 11-2-3 – Record the past 16 games. 11 – Goals in the past 17 games for James van Riemsdyk, who has a career-high of 26 so far this season. CINCINNATI, Ohio — The defending National League champions opened the season with a lot of waiting. And a couple of wins, too. The St. Louis Cardinals overcame another long delay and Todd Fraziers two homers on Thursday, holding on to beat the Cincinnati Reds 7-6 and take two of three in their season-opening series. The first pitch was delayed 3 hours, 42 minutes because of rain. Some of the Cardinals spent their down time by studying Cincinnatis pitchers again and getting a little extra work in the indoor batting cages. “Its tough to stay mentally into it,” said Matt Adams, who had a single and a pair of doubles. “Thats what we had to do to make sure we could go out there and perform. Were watching video and taking swings in the cage and stretching and making sure were ready to go.” Finally on the field, the Cardinals emerged from their two-game hitting slump by knocking Homer Bailey (0-1) out of the game in the fifth inning. Jhonny Peralta homered to get it going. It wasnt perfect — St. Louis stranded eight runners — but it was much better. “We had a lot of opportunities that we missed, too,” manager Mike Matheny said. “We had a lot of guys in scoring position.” St. Louis pulled away with three runs in the seventh, when Matt Hollidays single off the top of the outfield wall was upheld by the only video review of the series, this one initiated by the umpires. Lance Lynn (1-0) gave up Jay Bruces two-run homer and Fraziers solo shot during five innings. Frazier added a three-run homer in the seventh that cut it to 7-6. Trevor Rosenthal got the last four outs for his second save. The series involved nearly as much waiting as playing. There was a 2-hour, 40-minute delay before Wednesdays game, a 1-0 victory by Cincinnati. Along with the delay on Thursday, the teams wound up waiting 6 hours, 22 minutes to play during the two days. As Thursdays delay stretched on, Reds reliever Sam LeCure tweeted: “Uncle.” “The whole series was kind of weird with all the rain and stuff,” Frazier said. “It really put a damper on things.” The starters had a rough time after the delay. Lynn beat the Reds three times last season, but couldnt get a 1-2-3 inning on Thursday. Bruce and Frazier hit back-to-back homers in the first for a 3-0 lead. Even Bailey had a single off Lynn, who gave up eight hits while throwing 107 pitches. Peralta hit a two-run homer in the second off Bailey, and the Cardinals tied it with a breakthrough hit in the fourth. Adams doubled and came around on Jon Jays double, the Cardinals first hit with a runner in scoring position this season. They had been 0 for 17. Jays hit also extended his hitting streak to 15 games, including the end of last season. Hollidays first hit of the season, an RBI double, put the Cardinals up 4-3 in the fifth. Bailey lasted only 4 1-3 innings, giving up seven hits, three walks and four runs. The Cardinals added three in the seventh, when they loaded the bases on a pair of walks and Hollidays single off the top of the wall. The ball went over Billy Hamiltons glove and deflected to Bruce, who caught the ball. The umpires correctly ruled that it a hit off the top of the wall, and a 2-minute, 8-second review initiated by the umps upheld the call. They wanted to make sure the ball hadnt cleared the wall. Allen Craig and Yadier Molina followed with RBI singles as St. Louis pulled ahead 7-3. NOTES: The game ended 7 hours, 23 minutes after it was originally scheduled to start. … Shelby Miller starts for the Cardinals in Pittsburgh on Friday against Gerrit Cole. After a 59-save shutout of the San Jose Sharks, Ben Scrivens has given the Edmonton Oilers reason to believe he might be the answer in net going forward. He is also set to become a unrestricted free agent at the end of the season. The question is, do the Oilers sign the 27-year-old to a new deal, whether it be short or long term? Or do they trade him in hopes of maximizing his potential value? Its hard to believe that Edmonton will stand still and let Scrivens walk away at seasons end for nothing. At this point, the Spruce Grove, Alta., natives value might be higher than ever. Scrivens leads the NHL in save percentage (.937) and is second in shutouts (four). He is also third in goals-against average (1.93). You can point to the strong numbers and credit the defensive prowess of Los Angeles Kings, who are second in goals against with 116 and with whom Scrivens played 19 of his 23 games so far this season, but that isnt the whole story. In four starts with the Oilers, albeit a small sample size, Scrivens has arguably been better. His save percentage with Edmonton – who by the way have allowed a league-high 190 goals – is .024 higher than with the Kings and his goals-against average is .21 lower. His 2-2 record in Edmonton his indicative of a poor defensive squad, not his individual performances. He continues to earn opportunities to carry the load in net, but on the other hand, is goaltending really at the top of Edmontons wish list right now? With a defence that has trouble defending, does it matter who anchors the crease? Other priorities may take precedence to locking down an unproven starter. Management and ownership are running out of time and fans are running out of patience. Suffering at the bottom of the league for draft picks just wont do. Unless the Oilers choose to sign Scrivens, he remains one of the few expendable and currently valuable assets on the team. Scrivens flashes of brilliance and stretches of success were alive and well in two seasons with the Toronto Maple Leafs and this year with the Kings, but once he came back down to Earth, so did his value. So, is Scrivens the rock in net that is going to lead the rebuilding Oilers into the future? Or is it time for Edmonton to get as much out of the streaky goaltender as possible on the trade market? The Jets are 1-2-1 against Nashville this year despite outscoring the Predators 11-10. Blake Wheeler and Olli Jokinen lead Winnipeg with four points, while Craig Smith has four for the Predators.(Sports Network) – The Ottawa Senators have just two wins in their first seven games of the year, but Ottawa is coming off Thursdays victory over Winnipeg, and will look to keep the momentum going tonight against the Columbus Blue Jackets. The 4-1 decision ended a three-game slide and marked just the third time this year that Ottawa allowed less than five goals in a game. Milan Michalek had two goals and an assist while Jason Spezza added a goal and two assists for the Senators. “We talked about it before the game that we had to come out with our best effort,” said Spezza. “We backed it up tonight and did a real solid job out there.” Craig Anderson made 35 saves to help the Sens shut down the Jets. Peter Regin left the first period of Thursdays game with a shoulder injury and will miss tonights contest. Regin, who has one goal and two assists in five games this year, re-injured his left shoulder in a collision with Winnipegs Nik Antropov. The original injury caused Regin to sit out Ottawas first two games of the season. The Blue Jackets meanwhile, will once again try for its first win of the season when they visit the Senators tonight. The Blue Jackets entered this season with high hopes, but instead the club has suffered through the worst start in franchise history. Columbus is 0-6-1 on the season and has scored two goals in every single game.dddddddddddd This is the first time the Jackets have ever opened the season with seven straight losses. Columbus was dealt its most recent defeat Friday evening in Detroit, as Johan Franzen posted two goals and an assist in a 5-2 victory for the Red Wings. “These are tough times right now. We got to make sure we stick together, stay upbeat and try to get out of this,” Blue Jackets center Rick Nash said about his teams start to the season. Aaron Johnson had a goal and an assist for the Jackets, while Steve Mason made 28 saves in another losing effort. With goaltenders Curtis Sanford and Mark Dekanich still out with injuries, Mason has started all seven games this season. Mathieu Corbeil, a 20-year-old rookie with no NHL experience, had been serving as Masons backup, but he was recently sent back to his junior team in the QMJHL. Allen York, a 22-year-old who also has never seen action in an NHL game, backed up Mason on Friday. The good news for Columbus tonight is that it has won four of its last five matchups with the Senators. However, Ottawa is 3-0-1 with a tie in the five all-time meetings at Scotiabank Place. Ottawa is closing out a three-game homestand tonight and is 2-2-0 as the host so far this season. INDIAN WELLS, Calif. — Defending champions Rafael Nadal and Maria Sharapova were upset in the third round of the BNP Paribas Open on Monday. First, Sharapova went down to qualifier Camila Giorgi, 6-3, 4-6, 7-5, giving the young Italian her first victory over a top-five player. Then, Nadal followed on the main stadium court, losing 6-3, 3-6, 7-6 (5) to Alexandr Dolgopolov of Ukraine. Nadal staged a furious rally in the third. He won three straight games, including a break of Dolgopolov, to tie it at 5. Both players held serve to send the match into the tiebreaker. They slugged it out from the baseline accompanied by a noisy soundtrack, with fans yelling and cheering. Los Angeles Lakers star Pau Gasol watched nervously from Nadals box. Nadal led 4-2 before Dolgopolov won three straight points to take a 5-4 lead. The Ukrainian hit two forehand winners and came up with a big service winner. “I had enough breaks to win the match, but I didnt play enough well from the baseline then to be solid with my serve,” Nadal said. “I didnt go for the points. I played with too many mistakes.” Nadal evened it at 5-all, but he hit the ball long to set up match point. Dolgopolov served what he thought was an ace, but it was called out. He challenged the call and it showed the ball barely missed tagging the T. Dolgopolov put his second serve into play and produced a cross-court forehand that the worlds top-ranked player couldnt return. “Its a moment for the people to be proud a little bit for someone from their country,” Dolgopolov said, referring to the political upheaval going on between Ukraine and Russia. “Its good to make some results and make the people forget a little bit and have some happy moments in the news.” Dolgopolov had more errors (49) than winners (36). Last month, Nadal defeated Dolgopolov to win the Rio de Janeiro title. The Ukrainian has risen quickly in the ATP Tour rankings, going from No. 57 to 31st after a strong February, posting three wins against top-20 players in Rio and made the semifinals in Acapulco. Before Nadal was sent packing, Sharapova committed 58 errors in her first loss to a player ranked outside the top 30 since Wimbledon last year. “Shes someone that doesnt give you much rhythm,” Sharapova said. “Shes quite aggressive, but some shots she hits incredible for a long period of time. Sometimes they go off a bit. If Im speaking about my level, it was nowhere near where it should have been.” Ranked 79th in the world, Giorgi made it through qualifying to play Indian Wells for the first time. She improved to 3-2 against top-10 opponents. The 22-year-old led 4-2 in the final set, but Sharapova broke Giorgi twice to tie it at 5. “I was trying to just play my game, and maybe I accelerate more than the other set,” Giorgi said. “I just play more aggressive.” Giorgi then broke Sharapova at love before serving out the match, overcoming her 11th double fault to set up match point. Giorgi had 48 unforced errors and 24 winners. Awaiting Giorgi in the fourth round will be fellow Italian Flavia Pennetta, who beat No. 16 seed Sam Stosur 6-4, 3-6, 6-1. American Sloane Stephens was to play Ana Ivanovic, and Tommy Haas took on Kei Nishikori of Japan in night matches. Tied 4-all in the third, Sharapova was broken when her forehand was called long and Sharapova raised her arms. The chair umpire took the gesture to mean Sharapova was challenging the call, and the call showed the ball was out. Sharapova argued she was only throwing her arms up as if to ask, “Who made the call?” But the umpire disagreed, and Sharapova retreated to her sideline chair trailing 5-4. Australian Open champion Stan Wawrinka routed 29th-seeded Andreas Seppi of Italy 6-0, 6-2. Andy Murray outlasted Jiri Vesely of the Czech Republic 6-7 (2), 6-4, 6-4 in his second straight three-set match, and four-time tourney champion Roger Federer defeated 27th-seeded Dmitry Tursunov of Russia 7-6 (7), 7-6 (2) with an ace on match point. Murray had 47 of the 99 unforced errors during the nearly three-hour match in the 80-plus-degree heat of the Southern California desert. The third set featured six service breaks, with Murray taking the last two. Top-seeded Li Na defeated Karolina Pliskova of the Czech Republic 6-3, 6-4, while American Sloane Stephens beat 11th-seeded Ana Ivanovic 7-6 (3), 6-4. Hamilton posted the best lap of one minute 15.610 seconds on the 4.361-kilomtre Circuit Gilles-Villeneuve but his Mercedes AMG teammate Nico Rosberg was caught for second place when Massa came in at 1:16.086 with all the drivers running on supersoft tires late in the one-hour session. MANCHESTER, England — Netherlands coach Louis van Gaal was hired as Manchester United manager on Monday, tasked with repairing the damage from David Moyes disappointing 10 months in charge and reviving the fortunes of one of the worlds biggest clubs. The 62-year-old Dutchman has signed a three-year contract and will take over at Old Trafford after the World Cup in Brazil, becoming the first United manager from outside Britain and Ireland. United great Ryan Giggs, who announced the end of his 23-year playing career, will be Van Gaals assistant. “To work as a manager for Manchester United, the biggest club in the world, makes me very proud,” Van Gaal said in a United statement. “This club has big ambitions; I too have big ambitions. Together Im sure we will make history.” Van Gaal has experience of coaching — and winning league titles — at some of the worlds top teams, but even spells at Ajax, Barcelona and Bayern Munich may not prepare him for the rebuilding job required at United. The club has been in a state of flux since the retirement of Alex Ferguson last May after nearly 27 years in charge. Moyes, Fergusons successor, was dismissed last month before the team went on to finish seventh — its lowest placing since the Premier Leagues inception in 1992. United also failed to qualify for European football for the first time in 24 years. Van Gaal is likely to be handed considerable funds to strengthen the squad to get United back in the Champions League, something the clubs American owners — the Glazer family — werent prepared to give Moyes. A return to Europes top competition will likely be the priority, followed by a desire to play the kind of attacking, dynamic brand of football expected at United but unable to be delivered by Moyes. United has broken the mould by appointing Van Gaal. In the clubs 136-year history, no previous manager has come from outside Britain or Ireland, a common occurrence at Englands other big clubs in recent years. The notion of United hiring coaches in a bid to create a dynasty — something Ferguson uniquely achieved — also appears to have ended. After spending six years at Ajax, where Van Gaal guided a talented young team to the pinnacle of European football by winning the Champions League in 1995, he joined Barcelona in 1997 for the first of two spells — the first lasting three seasons and the second barely half a year. He has since coached AZ Alkmaar in the Dutch league and Bayern between 2009-11. So he may not be the long-term manager many at United crave — Giggs, Uniteds interim manager for last seasons final four games and one of the clubs greatest players, is thought to be being groomed for the seat in the future — but the fact that Van Gaal has won league titles with every team he has worked makes him one of Europes most-respected coaches. He has been coach of the Netherlands since 2012, his second spell with the national team following a stint from 2000-02. “Everyone is very excited about this new phase in the clubs history,” United vice-chairman Ed Woodward said. "His track record of success in winning leagues and cups across Europe throughout his career makes him the perfect choice for us. “People know him as a larger-than-life character but I have also been extremely impressed by his intelligence, thoughtful approach to the role and his diligence.” He can be spiky and provocative with journalists and hardly lacks in self-belief, a trait which can often spill over to make him appear arrogant. But after the failed tenure of Moyes, United needed a manager who commanded respect and had a strong track record. His job wont be easy. While United has regressed since landing its record-extending 20th English championship last year, rival Liverpool has improved greatly under Brendan Rodgers and finished second in the Premier League this season. Chelsea, Manchester City and Arsenal are established members of the top group and showing no signs of being on the slide. The appointment of Giggs as Van Gaals No. 2 will satisfy those eager for some continuity at the club following the trophy-filled era of Ferguson. The 40-year-old Giggs published an open letter on Uniteds website an hour after Van Gaals appointment, praising the Dutchmans qualities and revealing his decision to end his playing days. “For me, today is new chapter filled with many emotions — immense pride, sadness, but most of all, excitement towards the future,” Giggs said. “United fans I hope will share and echo my belief that the club, the management and owners, are doing everything they can to return this great club to where it belongs, and I hope to be there every step of the way.” . Cassano has been at the Policlinico facility since Saturday, when he was taken for tests after suffering what the club described as a brain problem on the team plane following the teams 3-2 victory over Roma. He expects to be ready for the opener next season. “Thats the plan,” Bradford said Wednesday. “Like I said, just taking it day by day, trying to get better each day during the rehab process, and Ill be back when Im back.” The surgery will be done by Dr. James Andrews, who also did Bradfords shoulder surgery when he was at Oklahoma. Bradford said the rest of the knee is intact and that it was a clean tear. On Monday night, he was on the sideline and has attended practices, too. “Somebody asked me like, Why are you still here? Its like, what else am I going to do?” Bradford said. "Football is all I have, so if I werent up here helping out, watching film, I honestly have no idea what I would do. “It sure as anything beats sitting at home watching TV, listening to music, so Ill be up here until they kick me out.” Bradford said offensive co-ordinator Brian Schottenheimer advised him it might be time well spent to “develop relationships.” “Just because I cant be on the field working with those guys, doesnt mean that I cant spend time with them in the meeting room,” Bradford said. “It doesnt meean that I cant spend time with them away from the facility, just talk football, talk our offence, our language and just get more familiar with each other.dddddddddddd” Bradford was injured on a scramble in the second half of a loss at Carolina in Week 7 when he was pushed out of bounds by Mike Mitchell. He didnt blame the player, saying his foot “just kind of got stuck and the rest of my body kept going, and thats what caused the injury.” “Its not like he came over and tried to kill me, either,” Bradford said. “So I think it was a clean play.” Bradford didnt notice Mitchell taunting him after the play, but did see guard Harvey Dahl rush to his defence. “I would like to think that he didnt know that I was injured, but I know what Harvey went up and did,” Bradford said. “I really appreciate that, and it means a lot when your guys stick up for you.” Backup Kellen Clemens will make his second straight start this week against Tennessee. “Kellens been here for me a lot over the past couple years, and Im trying to do the same thing for him,” Bradford said. “Sit in the meeting room, watch tape, if he asks for my opinion Im happy to give it to him.” ___ AP NFL website: www.pro32.ap.org cheap nfl jerseys wholesale jerseys ’ ’ ’

ST. JOHNS, N.L. — The Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins continue to thrive on the road. Ben Street scored the overtime winner as the Penguins won 4-3 and held off a comeback performance by the St. Johns IceCaps in American Hockey League play Sunday. Bryan Lerg, Geoff Walker and Paul Thompson also converted for the visiting Penguins (22-12-5), who swept their opponents over the two-game series, giving the team seven straight road wins. “We dont prepare any differently or play a different style,” said Penguins head coach John Hynes. “But for whatever reason weve been able to win more on the road.” Even with a schedule of bus rides between dates, the team still manages to consistently play with fresh legs. “We try to have a good travel set-up for the guys so they can get loose and be ready,” Hynes said. Kenndal McArdle and Spencer Machacek answered for the IceCaps (22-10-6), while Jason Jaffray scored the game-tying goal. Scott Monroe started in net for Wilkes-Barre/Scranton and made 32 saves on 35 shots. Edward Pasquale manned the crease for St. Johns and posted 36 saves on 40 Penguin attempts after having missed four games with a sore knee. “I felt fine in net,” Pasquale said of his recovery. “Ive been skating for a while now.” Bryan Lerg netted the Penguins third short-handed goal in two nights at 14:00 of the first on a breakaway to open the scoring. Paul Thompson made it 2-0 at 16:44 as he knocked in a rebound from Bortuzzos shot. Spencer Machacek got his team back in the game at 2:18 of the second with a low shot on Munroes stickside. Geoff Walker upped the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton lead with a tip-shot on the power play at 12:05 of the second from a shot off the half-boards by Street. Wilkes-Barre/Scranton couldnt stay out of the box in the first half of the third, taking four straight penalties. During the prolonged 5 on 3, Machacek tripped Penguin Robert Bortuzzo and was given two minutes, along with a 10-minute misconduct for disputing the call. The Penguinss penalty killing unit survived the storm, but gave up a goal to Ben Maxwell on a Geoff Walker penalty several minutes later, fishing 6 for 7 on the game. IceCap captain Jason Jaffray went top corner on Monroes blocker side to force overtime at 13:50 of the third. “It shows whats in that room,” said IceCaps head coach Keith McCambridge of his teams third period comeback. “We just played four games in six nights and to dig down and find the energy to take that game to overtime, I dont think theres anything for those guys to hang their heads about.” In the closing minutes of the third a Jason Jaffray shot ricocheted off Joey Morminas stick and struck the defenceman in the face. Albertville prosecutor Patrick Quincy said “no infraction by anyone has been turned up” and the probe has been closed, his office said in a statement — responding to questions about whether the Meribel ski station in the French Alps or an equipment maker might have had some role in Schumachers injury. The 45-year-old German auto racing legend suffered serious head injuries on Dec. 29 when he fell and hit the right side of his head on a rock off the side of a demarcated slope in Meribel. Schumacher has been treated at Grenoble University Hospital in southeastern France since then. Quincys office said the rock that caused Schumacher to fall was 10.4 metres (34 feet) away from another rock upon which he hit his head — and each were more than 4 metres away from the edge of the red-level piste that he was on. “Thee accident took place in an off-piste area,” the prosecutors statement said.dddddddddddd. “The signage, marking, staking and information provided about the edges of this slope adhere to French norms in place.” For many fans, the biggest concern is about Schumachers health and recovery prospects — and doctors have started waking him from an induced coma. The most recent in a string of statements from his spokeswoman was released last week but declined to provide further details about his health, citing privacy concerns. Experts have said it will likely be months before Schumachers prognosis becomes clear — and that lasting brain damage is a possibility. Schumacher earned universal acclaim for his uncommon and sometimes ruthless driving talent, which led to a record 91 race wins. He retired from Formula One in 2012 after garnering an unmatched seven world titles. His accident happened on a family vacation in the Alps as Schumacher was skiing with his 14-year-old son. STRASBOURG, France — Third-seeded Kirsten Flipkens of Belgium and fifth-seeded Elena Vesnina of Russia both lost in the first round of the Strasbourg International on Monday. The 96th-ranked Zarina Diyas of Kazakhstan upset Wimbledon semifinalist Flipkens 6-2, 6-7 (3), 6-3, while Casey Dellacqua of Australia stunned Vesnina 7-5, 3-6, 6-3. Dellacqua broke serve seven times as Vesnina made nine double-faults. American trio Madison Keys, Vania King and Alison Riske moved into the second round. The eighth-seeded Riske beat Teliana Pereira of Brazil 6-3, 6-3, and Keys won the last four games to defeat Maria-Teresa Torro-Flor of Spain 7-6 (2), 6-2. King outlasted Paula Ormaechea of Argentina 5-7, 6-2, 6-1. A semifinalist in Bogota last month, King took a 4-0 lead in the second set and won the last five games in the decider. French wild-card entry Claire Feuerstein and Ajla Tomljanovic of Croatia also won their first-round matches. Feuerstein saved 10 of 12 break points in a 6-2, 6-4 win over Sharon Fichman of Canada, while Tomljanovic hit six aces to dismiss Kristina Mladenovic of France 6-4, 6-0. Belgiums last appearance on the big stage was the 2002 tournament when the team reached the second round before bowing out to eventual champions Brazil.LAS VEGAS — Chris Weidman accepted his UFC middleweight title belt with a grimace and a furtive look over his shoulder. Anderson Silva writhed and screamed on the canvas behind him, his left leg grotesquely broken by a kick to Weidmans knee. The champ couldnt celebrate after the UFCs year-end show ended with a stark reminder of the brutality at the core of this flashy, fast-growing sport. Weidman defended his title when Silva broke his shin on a kick to Weidmans knee in the second round Saturday night, ending UFC 168 with a horrific injury. While Weidman (11-0) awkwardly acknowledged his victory, the MGM Grand Garden crowd watched with reverence and horror as medical personnel tended to Silva (33-6), whose shin bent to a 90-degree angle after Weidman blocked his kick 1:16 into the round. “Theres no real excitement in a fight finishing like that, because you never want to see anyone get hurt like that,” Weidman said after his second straight win over the long-reigning champion. Weidman, who earned his belt with an upset victory in July, also dominated the first round of the rematch, pinning Silva to the mat and punishing him with blows. In the second, Weidman used his knee to stop Silvas kick with perfect mixed martial arts technique, never anticipating the result. “I did work on checking kicks,” Weidman said. “I figured if I (caught) him on my knee, it could really hurt him. Crazy how this happened.” Ronda Rousey also retained her bantamweight title on arguably the UFCs most anticipated show of the year, submitting Miesha Tate with a third-round arm bar. Rousey then walked away from her bitter rivals offer of a post-fight handshake, earning ferocious boos from the Vegas fight crowd. But Rouseys questionable sportsmanship was dwarfed by the unquestionably awful finish to the main event. Although the injury happened too quickly to be seen by most naked eyes in Las Vegas, the sound of Silvas cracking shin could be heard at cageside. Thousands of fans cringed and moaned when the replay was shown on the arenas big screens. “I knew coming into the fight that what he could hurt me most with was the leg kicks,” Weidman said. “We trained checking the kick a lot. The idea is to pull your leg and for their shin to land at the knee. Thats exactly what I did, and I felt his leg go right away.” Referee Herb Dean waved off the fight when Silva fell back, clutching his leg with both hands. Silva left the octagon strapped to a stretcher with a brace on his leg, screaming in pain. With his belt back around his waist, Weidman paid tribute to the injured ex-champion.dddddddddddd “Hes still known as the greatest fighter of all time,” Weidman said. Silvas nearly seven-year reign atop the middleweight division ended nearly six months ago when Weidman stopped the preening, posturing champion with a left hook at UFC 162. With two straight wins, the former Hofstra wrestler has firmly ended Silvas reign. The injury in the rematch conceivably could end the 38-year-old Brazilians MMA career. The show was heavy on violent finishes. Heavyweight Travis Browne knocked out veteran Josh Barnett in the first round with a series of elbows to the head, earning the third straight early stoppage on the pay-per-view portion of the card. Before the unsettling main event, Rousey (8-0) got the biggest test of her ascendant career. Rousey had never seen the second round of an MMA fight, but Tate tested the champion with striking and tenacity. Although Rousey repeatedly tossed Tate (13-5) to the canvas and pounded on her, Rousey couldnt finish until getting her weary opponent into her patented arm bar — the submission move she has used to end each of her eight professional fights. “I respect Miesha very much as a competitor,” said Rousey, who feels Tate insulted her family. “But I cant respect a fighter who did what she did, and I cannot shake her hand because of it.” Tate landed plenty of strikes to Rouseys head, particularly during a thrilling first round in which she tested Rouseys chin. Rousey gradually wore down Tate and finally finished her, violently bending her elbow and forcing Tate to tap out. “Going more than one round was a good experience,” Rousey said. “I needed that experience in the octagon, and as my mom said, better to get it in a win than in a loss.” But when Tate attempted to shake her hand, Rousey slowly rose and walked away. The crowd booed vociferously when the replay of the snub was shown in slow motion, but Rousey didnt apologize. Nearly two years ago, Rousey defeated Tate by first-round arm bar to claim Tates Strikeforce title, cementing her meteoric rise from the U.S. Olympic judo team to the apex of MMA. Rousey and Tate have made no secret of their distaste since that bout, further stoked by their combative appearance as coaches on the most recent season of “The Ultimate Fighter,” the UFCs competition reality show. “In judo, I didnt know what a cheer was,” Rousey said. “Cheers are whats new.” cheap nfl jerseys wholesale jerseys ’ ’ ’

FOXBOROUGH, Mass. — Something about playing against Major League Soccer brings out the best in Manchester Uniteds Federico Macheda. The 19-year-old forward scored twice as the Premier League champions opened their pre-season with a 4-1 victory over the New England Revolution on Wednesday night. Although sporadically used back at Old Trafford, Macheda is familiar to MLS fans after scoring twice for United in the leagues all-star game last summer. “You saw Macheda finishing today — first class,” United manager Sir Alex Ferguson said. “He is something special. Nineteen years-old — I still have high hopes for him.” Michael Carrick had a pair of assists and Michael Owen and Park Ji-Sung also scored for Man. U., which gained control of the match after a scoreless first by scoring three goals in 10 minutes in the second. Kenny Mansally scored for New England to make it 2-1 in the 56th minute, but Macheda made it 3-1 on a behind-the-back pass from Carrick that sent him in all alone on Revolution goalkeeper Bobby Shuttleworth. “After we scored, we found it got a bit easier,” Macheda said. The MVP of last summers MLS all-star game, Macheda made just one Premier League start in 12 competitive appearances during the first half of the season, then was loaned in January to Sampdoria. He scored just two competitive goals last season, one in the Premier League in November and the other in the Italian Cup in January. But returning to the United States was just what he needed. “Seems to be,” he said. “I hope to keep it like that.” Coming off its record 19th English league championship, Man. U. opens its title defence Aug. 14 at West Bromwich Albion. Playing for the first time since losing 3-1 in the Champions League final to Barcelona on May 28, United started only four players from that lineup and substituted liberally to avoid overtaxing players in their opener. Wayne Rooney came out at halftime, and Ashley Young, who made his United debut after joining the Red Devils from Aston Villa last month for a reported US$27 million, left in the 67th minute with a 3-1 lead. “Its always difficult in your first game,” said Rooney, who put a header over the crossbar in the 18th minute. “Its a different pitch to play on. For the first, overall, I was pleased.” The attendance was announced at 51,523 — the highest-attended club friendly in Gillette Stadium history — though the upper deck was empty and the lower bowl had several pockets of empty seats. It was 0-0 after 45 minutes - a moral victory for the Revolution, who are in last place in the MLS Eastern Conference. “Obviously, we were happy with the way things went in the first half,” said Revolution coach Steve Nicol, who subbed out most of his lineup to rest them for Sundays game against first-place Philadelphia. “At the end of the day, theyre smarter between the ears.” Owen scored in the 51st minute to make it 1-0 when he took a leading pass from Carrick at Shuttleworths right and, just steps away, aimed a low shot just under the goalkeepers outstretched leg. Just three minutes later, Carrick set up Macheda on a give-and-go that allowed Macheda to get between two New England defenders. In the 56th minute, New Englands Benny Feilhaber was awarded a free kick just outside the penalty area. He aimed his kick to the left of the defensive wall, where it deflected off Mansally and into the net. Macheda scored again in the 61st minute, converting a crossing pass from Rafael that made it all the way across the goal mouth. United made it 4-1 in the 80th when Gabriel Obertan spent several moments of razzle-dazzle on New Englands Zak Boggs, freezing him with fancy footwork before dropping a soft pass to Ryan Giggs. Giggs touched it toward the net for Park, who waited for Shuttleworth to commit before chipping the ball over him and into the net. With Edwin van der Sar retired, Anders Lindegaard was in goal rather than David de Gea, signed by United from Atletico Madrid after leading Spain to the title in the European under-21 Championship. DUNEDIN, Florida – Blue Jays general manager Alex Anthopoulos spent a patient offseason waiting for the market value of free agent starting pitchers to drop. In the end, Ervin Santanas desire to pitch in the National League and his willingness to play the waiting game won the day when he signed a one-year deal with the Braves worth a reported $14.1-million, exactly the value of the qualifying offer he rejected from his former team, the Kansas City Royals. Anthopoulos was light on specifics but insisted neither term nor dollars affected Santanas decision. The Jays could have increased their offer to Santana. They cant change the league or division in which they play. “Couldnt compete with it,” said Anthopoulos. “Wish him the best, obviously Im sure us and other clubs would have loved to have had him but were going to move on.” Santana couldnt find a multi-year contract offer which suited him, due largely in part to the draft pick compensation owed Kansas City by the team that signed him. The preference to pitch in the National League, in and of itself, is understandable. “I certainly understand it,” said R.A. Dickey, who pitched in the NL East for the Mets. “You get to face a pitcher every night, you dont have the DH and then the games are quicker and all that stuff, parks a little bit bigger. So, it makes sense logically for him on a one-year deal in particular.” Santana is pitching for his next contract; a deal he hopes will be a multi-year pact. He will be 32 at the time. The Braves play in a division that features the young, rebuilding Miami Marlins, the Bernie Madoff-infected New York Mets and the expensive, aging Phillies. On paper, only the Nationals pose a threat to Atlanta and both could end up in the playoffs, one as a wildcard. The Braves entered the fray on the weekend after two of their top pitchers, Kris Medlen and Brandon Beachy, experienced elbow pain. Beachy has had Tommy John elbow ligament replacement surgery. It appears Medlen is destined for the operation, which would cost him the season, although he was seeking a second opinion. What isnt clear is how close the Blue Jays were to signing Santana before Atlanta emerged. It is clear they thought they close. “Talking about Santana (internally,) that kind of put some things on hold, it kind of changed our opinions on some things but now that hes gone were back to where we were,” said manager John Gibbons. Asked if he thought Santana would sign on the weekend, Anthopoulos kept his cards close. “Um, yeah, you know what, Id rather not say. Id probably rather not say.” Was Anthopoulos surprised the Jays didnt land Santana? “Thats another good (question.) Id probably rather not say on that one as well.” The Blue Jays exercised a full-court press to secure Santanas services. The pitcher has a number of friends on the club – hes a native of the Dominican Republic – and he shares an agent, Jay Alou, with Jose Bautista. None of it was enough. The Blue Jays are back to square one. R.A. Dickey, Brandon Morrow and Mark Buehrle are locks for the starting rotation. At the start of camp, Anthopoulos indicated J.A. Happ had a starters job, too, but has since backtracked. Happ was away from the team for two days late last week dealing with back pain both he and the club say isnt affecting his ability to pitch. Happ has been knocked around, to the tune of a 40.50 ERA in two appearances, and is now part of the larger group of pitchers competing for the final two rotation spots. Happ told TSN.ca on Saturday he hadnt been told of a possible change to his role. He was surprised and appeared vexed. “Well he hasnt told me anything,” said Anthopoulos. “As far as Im concerned, no one said anything to me, so I dont have any concerns.” jerseys from china . Blake Griffin had 27 points and eight rebounds, Chris Paul added 19 points — including a go-ahead layup in the final minute — and the Clippers beat the Hawks 109-108 on Saturday night for their season-high seventh straight win. “In the locker room, I almost felt like we lost the game, because we expect a lot from themselves,” Paul said. Reilly Smith scored the game-winning goal with 59 seconds left in the third period and the Bruins beat the Florida Panthers 3-2 on Thursday night. Smith backhanded the puck into the net between the legs of Thomas after a faceoff in the Panthers zone. The goal spoiled Thomas first game against his former team since joining the Panthers as a free agent. “I, of course, tried to approach it just like any other game,” Thomas said. “Having said that, it was a big game for me coming back after a while and then, obviously, facing your former team and a lot to-do around it. I was a little bit nervous today, but not too bad.” Thomas fell to the ice in disappointment when Smiths goal went in while the Bruins celebrated. “Got close at the end there. We didnt want that to happen,” Smith said. “Its a great feeling to score and help the team get a win.” Dougie Hamilton and Daniel Paille also scored goals for the Bruins, while Tuukka Rask made 27 saves. Jesse Winchester and Kris Versteeg scored for the Panthers and Thomas stopped 37 shots. Thomas overcame a shaky first period to turn in a solid game until giving up the goal in the final minute. “It hurts the way it ended up,” Thomas said. “I really wanted to guys in front of me to be rewarded after coming back in the third period after the way we started out.” The 39-year-old Thomas, who spent his first eight NHL seasons with Boston, returned to the lineup after suffering a groin injury on Oct. 8 that forced him to an early exit after giving up two goals on five shots in a 2-1 loss at Philadelphia. Thomas helped the Bruins win the Stanley Cup in 2011. The two-time Vezina Trophy winner also won the Conn Smythe Trophy that season as playoff MVP. Thomas followed that by going 35-19-1 with a 2.36 goals-against average and five shutouts in 2011-12, then sat out the 2013 lockout-shortened season. “It was an awesome time there (in Boston),” Thomas said. “I dont know what else to say. This is a new chapter inn my life; its a new chapter in the Bruins thing for them.dddddddddddd” Trailing 2-1, the Panthers tied it at 2 with six minutes left in the third on Winchesters goal. After the Panthers won a faceoff in the Bruins zone, Nick Bjugstad took a shot on goal. Rask blocked the shot, but lost control of the puck. It drifted in front of the crease and Winchester took a couple whacks at it before poking it in. “I didnt want to cost us the game,” Rask said. “I made a mistake there and they tied it up … the guys came up big after that.” Florida closed to 2-1 in the second period after Versteeg took a pass from Jonathan Huberdeau in the right circle and wristed it past Rask at 12:32. Boston went ahead 1-0 on Pailles goal in the first. Paille skated in from the left circle and his wrist shot went high into the net at 3:45. It was a quick goal, but it turned out it wasnt going to be that easy against Thomas. “Hes a tremendous goalie. We had 40 shots and it still took us until that last minute,” Paille said. “It was nice to get a couple early on him and have that lead but he bounced back and made it that much harder to get that third one.” The Bruins took a 2-0 lead later in the period on Hamiltons power-play goal. Hamilton took a pass from David Krejci just inside the blue line at the point and fired the puck past Thomas at 12:47. Hamilton, a healthy scratch the past two games, notched his first goal of the season, aided by Zdeno Chara playing in front of the crease to screen Thomas. “Its good to get the win but I had a lot of excitement and adrenaline in the first period being back in,” Hamilton said. “Weve been talking to try to get it up and make them save it with their hands and if they cant see it thats pretty tough. Z creates that goal.” NOTE: The Bruins broke an 0-for-12 power-play drought with Hamiltons first-period goal. … The Bruins and Panthers will meet five times as Atlantic Division rivals this season. As the Toronto Argonauts prepare to face their hated enemies from down the QEW, the Hamilton Tiger Cats, in this Sundays Eastern Final, theyre faced with something they havent experienced all season – a healthy receiving corps.MONTREAL — The Hamilton Bulldogs couldnt recover from two goals in quick succession. Jean-Gabriel Pageau and Buddy Robinson scored 43 seconds apart in the second period to lead the Binghamton Senators to a 4-1 victory over the Bulldogs in American Hockey League action Friday night at the Bell Centre. The goals came off defensive lapses – missed coverage, and a mistake by goaltender Dustin Tokarski. Pageau was left alone in the slot for the equalizer, and Robinson benefited from Tokarskis lax play for the winner. “Those were two gifts. We gave them those goals,” said Bulldogs coach Sylvain Lefebvre. “Those were glaring mistakes.” With Hamilton leading 1-0 in the second period, the Senators tied the game at 15:00 when Pageau beat Tokarski above the glove into a gaping top corner. Pageau was left unmarked just outside the crease following a defensive breakdown, and could make no mistake from such close range. Robinson put Binghamton ahead less than a minute later, slotting home his ninth of the year past a sprawling Bulldogs goaltender. After an initial shot from the point, Tokarksi tried to smother the puck with his glove, but Senators forward Derek Grant got to it before him. Grant poked it out to a wide-open Robinson. “Its tough to come back from that,” said Lefebvre. “Those really hurt your confidence. And were in a tough stretch right now, so confidence isnt coming easy to us. Sometimes we get discouraged too easily.” The Bulldogs (22-24-5) found no way back after the abrupt turnaround. Instead, they were kept at bay by Binghamton (33-15-4) netminder Andrew Hammond, who was in fine form. Hammond made 31 saves, including 10 in the third period, for his 17th win of the season. Hamilton is slumping of late. Theyve gone 2-7-1 in their last 10 games, and have only scored four times in their last three. “Thats the story of our season so far,” said forward Gabriel Dumont, who was kept off the score sheet for the fourth straight game. “Were trying to keep it simple and drive to the net, put pucks on the net, but were having trouble finding the back of the net.” Dumont, whos played two games with the Montreal Canadiens this seasonn, has been a Bulldog for the last four years.dddddddddddd His struggling team has fallen to 13th in the Western Conference, and is eight points out of a playoff spot. “Its a frustrating season with some highs, and a lot of lows,” he added. “Were still looking for consistency. Tonight, we were only able to score one goal.” The goal was Nick Tarnaskys, and it opened the scoring at 4:18 of the second period. The six-foot-two Bulldogs forward used defenceman Mike Sdao as a screen to fool Hammond with a shot between the legs. “I got a lucky bounce at the blue-line,” said Tarnasky, who was on a partial breakaway when he entered the Binghamton zone. "I heard somebody yelling: Youre on a two-on-one. But I wasnt. I was going to pass, but there was nobody there. “It was lucky enough that (Sdao) was coming across at the same time as I shot it. I dont think the goaltender was able to see it. That play gave us a little lift at the time.” But it was all Binghamton after their two quick strikes later in the frame. Andre Petersson scored on a great individual effort at 12:29 of the third period to seal the victory, and Mike Hoffman added another in an empty net in the games final two minutes. Hoffman has 10 points (five goals, five assists) in his past five games. Hes second in the AHL in points with 65. Tokarski made 18 saves. There was little love lost between the teams to start the game. Tarnasky and Binghamtons Darren Kramer set the tone before the encounter even got underway, exchanging words and a few slashes during the pre-game warm-up. Tarnasky and Kramer waited only seven minutes into the game to solve their differences, dropping the gloves to earn fighting majors. Jarred Tinordi and the Senators Mark Borowiecki also fought in a first period that saw 34 penalty-minutes doled out by the referees. Notes: The attendance at the Bell Centre was 8,771. a The Senators, Ottawas AHL affiliate, are in first place in the East Division. Theyve won four games in a row. a This was the second and last matchup of the season between Hamilton and Binghamton. Tinordi scored in overtime to lead the Bulldogs to victory over the Senators on Feb. 8. WHERE YOU SHOULD DRIVE IT Short answer, everywhere! There is no chance this car sits in your driveway for more than 8 hours at a time, its just too pretty. However, in this case, it all depends on what model you have. If you have the drop top, any coastline will do. What a perfect car to let everyone see your sick flow that you have been growing all winter. If you have the coupe, driving in any city downtown at night is the way to go. The coupe is a very angry, yet sophisticated looking car. Which will almost directly reflect the person driving it. Sophisticated because he or she lives downtown, and angry because the roads are so bad.SOUNDTRACK FOR THE RIDEAgain, this all depends on whether you have the coupe or the vert. If you dont have a roof might I suggest some British bands like the Beatles or The Rolling Stones, basically any artist that is British because I feel like it will make the car happy, it will make you happy too. If you drive the hard top, theres only one track that comes to mind, the James Bond theme music! Jaguars have been featured in many Bond movies, but oddly enough, Bond himself never drove one, but I feel like he would want to drive this. FUN FACTS The entire body is made of aluminum; the whole side of the car is actually one cold-molded piece of metal. Jaguar uses this technique to achieve super strong, yet lightweight body parts. The coupe also comes with the option of an aluminum roof or a panoramic glass roof panel; torsional rigidity is identical regardless of which roof is fitted. Like music? Like listening to it loudly? Well then this car is for you, as one of the options is a 770-watt Meridian audio system. Images Courtesy of: Autoblog Canada www.sal…] . Kingsbury, from Deux-Montagnes, Que., won gold with a score of 26.93, while Bilodeau, from Montreal, took silver with 26.54. Japans Sho Endo (25.24) placed third.BIRMINGHAM, England – Daniela Hantuchova took advantage of a wasteful performance by Ana Ivanovic to win 6-7 (7), 6-3, 6-2 on Saturday and reach the Aegon Classic final. Ivanovic failed to convert 18 break points and let slip a 5-1 lead in the first set before finally taking in on the tiebreaker. The former-top ranked Serb had two break points in the fifth game of the second set and five more in the seventh before falling away. The fourth-seeded Hantuchova handled the important points better, as well as two rain delays, as she reached her 12th WTA Tour final. “I like playing on grass, and Ive had a lot of experience on it, and that certainly helps you to do the right things”, Hantuchova said. Hantuchova will face Sabine Lisicki of Germany in Sundays final, which has been brought forward by three hours because of expected rain. Lisicki beat third-seeded Peng Shuai 6-3, 6-1 in the second semifinal. Ivanovic, who clubbed 17 aces as well as hitting some powerful forehands, looked almost too disappointed to contest the final point, and the result is a blow to hopes that she can use the grass-court season to lift her fortunes. The 19th-ranked Ivanovic, who won the 2008 French Open, was looking to reach her first finall since October.dddddddddddd “I dont know how many break points I had, but I still felt positive coming out for the third set,” Ivanovic said. "It was only in the last couple of games that I didnt have the intensity I had previously. My mind was wandering and things happen very fast on grass. “But it was the first time I have played four matches in a row for a long time, and thats something positive I can take into next week.” Lisicki, a 21-year-old German who reached the Wimbledon quarter-finals two years ago, outplayed the third-seeded Peng, ensuring that there will not be a Chinese champion in Birmingham for a second successive year. Li Na, the French Open champion, won last years title. Lisicki is on her way back after spending seven weeks on crutches last year with an ankle injury. “Its nearly impossible to put into words how happy I am,” she said. “I had to start again from zero because the leg had no muscles after all that time. That made it tough, but it makes it all the nicer now.” If Lisicki wins again it will not only give her the second title of her career but could increase her chances of being awarded one of the two remaining Wimbledon wild cards. CLEVELAND — More than one month after firing Mike Brown, the Cavaliers still havent found his replacement. However, they could be close. The team had second interviews with Los Angeles Clippers associate head coach Alvin Gentry and assistant Tyronn Lue on Friday, meetings that were expected to include Cavs owner Dan Gilbert. Gentry and Lue are among at least a dozen candidates contacted by the club since Brown was fired on May 12 following a 33-49 season, ending his second stint with the club. While Gentry and Lue appear to be the co-favourites to become Clevelands coach in three years, neither of them has been offered the job and the Cavs search will extend into next week. Cleveland has scheduled an interview with former Maccabi Tel Aviv coach David Blatt, who announced Thursday he was resigning from his job with the European champion to take a coaching job in the NBA. Blatt did not specify which team he was joining, but said he has not been offered the Cavs position. Blatt also has been approached by Golden State to be an assistant under new coach Steve Kerr. The 55-year-old Blatt was first contacted by the Cavs last week, but he has known new Cleveland general manager David Griffin for several years. Blatt is considered an offensive mastermind, and hes been on the radar of several NBA teams. He acknowledged his interest in returning to the U.S. — he was born in Massachusetts and played at Princeton - while leading Russia to a bronze medal at the 2012 London Olympics. Blatt said he was leaving Maccabi to “follow my dream.” He led the club to a stunning upset over Real Madrid in the European Championships, a victory that touched off massive celebrations in Israel. If the Cavs decide to hire him, Cleveland fans would probably not have the same reaction because Blatt is unknown outside hoops circles and hed be an unconventional choice. Earlier this week, the team met with Charlotte assistant Mark Price, a four-time All-Star point guard in Cleveland who remains one of the most beloved players in franchise history. Former Memphis coach Lionel Hollins, Bulls assistant Adrian Griffin, former Chicago coach Vinny Del Negro also had interviews with the club, but its not known if any of them will get a second look. Gilbert and Griffin understand the importance of landing the right coach as the Cavaliers enter a significant summer. The club owns the No. 1 overall pick in this months draft and the Cavs are in the process of evaluating the top college prospects. Kansas centre Joel Embiid visited Cleveland earlier this week and the Cavs gave him a thorough medical exam and worked out the 7-footer. Jayhawks forward Andrew Wiggins and Duke forward Jabari Parker are scheduled to meet with the Cavs next week. Embiid has been touted as a franchise-changing player, but there are medical concerns about the 18-year-old, who only started playing basketball a few years ago in his native Cameroon. He missed the NCAA tournament last season with a stress fracture in his lower back, and the Cavs wanted to make sure hes healthy before they considered taking him. The Cavs are not confirming player visits until the day they take place. And while they juggle the coaching search and various options with the top pick, including a trade, the Cavs must also decide whether to offer All-Star point guard Kyrie Irving a maximum, five-year contract extension next month. Irving has given mixed signals about his commitment to Cleveland, and it certainly hasnt helped that the Cavs have been in disarray since he arrived. The team was expected to get to the playoffs last season under Brown, who was fired for the first time four years ago by Gilbert. Maybe the next coach can not only inspire Irving, but get the Cavs back on track. First, though, theyve got to find him. Washingtons terrific tandem outplayed and outhustled Stephen Curry and Klay Thompson when it mattered most in a matchup of two of the NBAs best young backcourts. Beal, who was 1-of-7 shooting in the first half, finished 8 of 19 from the floor to go with seven rebounds and four assists. Wall hit a tiebreaking 3-pointer with 1:28 remaining, and the Wizards forced the Warriors into several difficult shots in the closing moments. Stephen Curry scored 23 points before missing a contested left-handed 3-pointer as time expired, and Thompson had 13 points and six rebounds for the streaky Warriors. OAKLAND, Calif. — Golden State Warriors coach Mark Jackson said before his team faced the Washington Wizards on Tuesday night that John Wall deserved to be on the Eastern Conference All-Star team. He may want to add the other half of Washingtons terrific backcourt tandem, too. Bradley Beal scored 18 of his 20 points in the second half, and Wall had 15 points and eight rebounds while making some big plays late to lead the Wizards past the Warriors 88-85. “I just kept shooting. I had amnesia, and I wasnt getting down on myself in the first half because I got good looks and I was taking what the defence was giving me and the shots that I wanted,” Wall said. “I didnt lose my confidence or anything like that. I knew in the second half I had to step up for this team to be able to win.” In a matchup of two of the NBAs best young backcourts, Washingtons guard duo outplayed and outhustled Stephen Curry and Klay Thompson when it mattered most. “It wasnt a pretty game by either team Im sure offensively, but these are the kind of games our defence can win for us,” Wizards coach Randy Wittman said. Stephen Curry scored 23 points before missing a contested left-handed 3-pointer as time expired, and Thompson had 13 points and six rebounds for the streaky Warriors, who have lost six of nine since winning 10 in a row. “Weve got to be better,” Jackson said. “The very good teams or the great teams in this league, they take care of their business.dddddddddddd And right now were a team (that) if a championship-calibre team comes in here or an elite team comes in here, we play at that level. Or if a bad team or an average team comes in, then we play at that level. We are not good enough to allow who comes in here to determine how hard we play.” Both teams shot under 38 per cent and were often careless with the ball. The Warriors committed 19 turnovers, while Washington had 18. In the end, the Wizards were a little crisper. Beal shook off his slow start to make three consecutive 3-pointers at the beginning of the fourth quarter to give Washington a 75-68 lead. The Warrriors came back quickly, with Thompson connecting from beyond the arc to cap a spurt that put the Warriors up 79-77. After Washington went ahead by five, Curry hit a 3-pointer that brought most of the announced sellout crowd of 19,596 roaring to its feet. Golden State stopped the Wizards after a timeout, and then grabbed two offensive rebounds before Thompson found David Lee for a layup that tied the score at 85 with 1:47 to play. Wall came back with a 3-pointer off a rebound, and then Andre Iguodala air-balled a 3 for the Warriors on the other end. Washington missed a major chance when centre Marcin Gortat, who also lost two rebounds in the final minutes, missed a wide-open layup after securing a rebound. It didnt matter. Curry missed another shot from long range, and the Wizards grabbed the rebound — but blew another chance to put the game out of reach. After stopping Washington and calling timeout with 6.1 seconds left, the Warriors wasted the final possession, with Curry picking up his dribble and forcing a left-handed leaner around Trevor Ariza that sealed Washingtons win. Curry shot 8 of 23 from the floor, and Thompson finished 5 for 17. “We didnt do enough to separate ourselves and were at the mercy of some missed shots down the stretch that decided the game,” Curry said. “Just a bad performance, and really disappointing.” NOTES: The Warriors had won six straight over the Wizards, including the only other matchup this season, a 112-96 victory at Washington on Jan. 5. … The Wizards recalled G Glen Rice from the Iowa Energy of the NBA Development League. Rice, who was not in the active lineup, is averaging 2.9 points and 10 minutes in 11 games with the Wizards. … There was a moment of silence before the game for Hall of Famer Tom Gola, a member of the inaugural 1962-63 San Francisco Warriors who died Sunday. The Oklahoma City Thunder have overtaken the Indiana Pacers for the top spot in the TSN.ca NBA Power Rankings. While the Thunder have won four of six, and added veteran wing Caron Butler to their rotation, they could have been passed by the Los Angeles Clippers, if not for the Clippers missing Jamal Crawford and J.J. Redick due to injuries. Even so, the Clips jumped from five to two. Healthy, and winners of eight straight, the San Antonio Spurs are up from eight to five; the Minnesota Timberwolves are healthy and have won eight of 11, lifting them up from 16 to 12. Even if their five-game winning streak came at the expense of non-playoff teams, that was enough for the New York Knicks to vault from 26 to 19. The Portland Trail Blazers have lost four straight and star power forward LaMarcus Aldridge is hurt again, so they fall from 10 to 15. Further down the chart, the Detroit Pistons sink from 19 to 23 and the Los Angeles Lakers drop from 23 to 28. The Toronto Raptors, who have one regulation loss in the past nine games, remain at nine. . PAUL, Minn.HARRISBURG, Pa. - A handcuffed Jerry Sandusky testified by video link for nearly three hours Tuesday about his Penn State retirement deal and ties between the university and the youth charity he founded, as a hearing began to determine if he should get retirement benefits cancelled over his child molestation conviction. Speaking from the western Pennsylvania prison where he is serving a 30 to 60-year sentence, Sandusky described how he retired from Penn State in mid-1999 to take advantage of an early retirement incentive, and then was immediately rehired on a temporary basis to coach one last season. A hearing examiner is taking evidence about the post-retirement benefits Sandusky received and the universitys connection to The Second Mile charity as part of Sanduskys appeal of the pension forfeiture. Sandusky said that after the 1999 season, he never received another paycheque or W-2 tax form from Penn State, never held himself out to be a Penn State employee and was even given a retirement party. At issue is whether he could be considered a school employee about a decade later, when he committed sex crimes against two boys that meet the states standards for forfeiture. Sandusky disputed documents that claim he received dozens of payments from Penn State after 1999. “I dont know the exact number for sure, but I know it was in the neighbourhood of three,” he said. “It was far from 71.” Sandusky was the only witness called by his lawyers, and the afternoon session began with a retirement system employee reading a timeline that outlined the former coachs history with the pension agency, starting when he was hired by Penn State in 1969. He lost a $4,900-a-month pension in October 2012, the day he was sentenced for 45 counts of child sexual abuse. The decision also precluded his wife, Dottie Sandusky, from collecting benefits. She attended the hearing Tuesday in Harrisburg. The State Employees Retirement System (SERS) ruled that his convictions for involuntary deviate sexual intercourse and indecent assault fell under Pennsylvanias Public Employee Pension Forfeiture Act. Sandusky had opted to participate in the state-sponsored retirement system while at Penn State, which is a “state-related” university, but he was not a state employee. At the heart of the dispute is whether Sanduskys ties to the university after his retirement, including some payments, made him a “de facto” Penn State employee while committing the crimes in question. His lawyer has argued he was not and that his employment contract was not renewed after the forfeiture law took effect in 1978 so its terms do not apply to him. Sandusky attorney Charles Benjamin has said Penn State made only six payments to Sandusky between 2000 and 2008, and three of them involved travel costs. The other three were speaking fees of $100, $300 and $1,500. In a Dec. 9 filing, Benjamin also argued that Sandusky did not fit the definition of “school employee” under the forfeiture law. “No reported case in the history of Pennsylvania jurisprudence has ever applied a de facto employee analysis to deny someone his retirement earnings, and SERS should not bow to political pressure and mob rule to deny claimant his retirement earnings,” Benjamin wrote. In recent weeks, there was a dispute over the SERS witness list, which included two former Penn State administrators facing alllegations of a criminal coverup about Sandusky, former athletic director Tim Curley and former vice-president Gary Schultz.dddddddddddd A SERS lawyer said at the start of the hearing that both men asserted their Fifth Amendment rights not to testify. There is currently no trial date set for Curley and Schultz, who are being prosecuted in the Dauphin County Courthouse, about two blocks from the SERS headquarters. It likely will be several months before the hearing examiner, Michael Bangs, produces his written recommendation to the retirement system board. If the board rules against Sandusky, he may appeal to Commonwealth Court. Meanwhile, a lawsuit filed by Joe Paternos family and others against the NCAA needs the schools involvement in order for parts of it to proceed, a state judge ruled Tuesday. The 25-page opinion by Judge John Leete delivered a mixed decision by dismissing some elements, keeping others alive and leaving the door open for an amended lawsuit to be filed. Leete said breach of contract claims, however, cannot continue without Penn States participation because the school is an “indispensable party,” given that the lawsuit could affect the universitys interests and contractual rights. The lawsuit seeks to void a consent decree between the NCAA and Penn State over handling of the Jerry Sandusky child sex abuse scandal, an agreement that imposed a $60 million fine, a four-year ban on post-season play, a reduction in scholarships and other penalties. “If the consent decree is declared void, as plaintiffs request, Penn State would lose the benefits it bargained for, including avoiding harsher sanctions and limiting further loss that could result from a prolonged investigation,” Leete wrote. He added that the NCAA had indicated earlier that the football program could be shut down if the decree was invalidated. Paterno family attorney Wick Sollers said the decision allows the critical claims in the lawsuit to go forward. The ruling will let “the bright light of legal discovery” shine on the facts and records, he said. Paterno died in 2012, weeks after the scandal erupted and he was fired as football coach. A Penn State spokesman declined to comment. “We are exceedingly pleased that the court rejected the plaintiffs effort to undo the consent decree,” NCAA chief legal officer Donald Remy said in a statement. “As this was the last remaining legal challenge to the validity of the consent decree, we hope the courts decision finally brings closure to this issue and allows the Penn State community to continue to move forward under the consent decree and the athletic integrity agreement.” The judge threw out a claim of interference with contractual relations but kept in place civil conspiracy and commercial disparagement elements. “Plaintiffs identified disparaging statements accusing Joe Paterno of enabling and concealing child sexual abuse and knowledge or reckless disregard with respect to their falsity,” Leete wrote. He said that although the family did not meet a legal standard generally required in disparagement claims, the requirement is lifted when the disparaging statements are libelous. Leete also tossed parts of the defamation allegations, except as they apply to university trustee Alvin Clemens and two former coaches who sued, William Kenney and Jay Paterno, Joe Paternos son. St. Louis, MO (SportsNetwork.com) – Wichita State is no longer unbeaten, having fallen prey to a shocking upset. Andrew Harrison converted 3-of-4 foul shots down the stretch and Fred VanVleets contested 3-pointer fell short just prior to the buzzer, allowing Kentucky to reach the Sweet 16 by knocking off the Shockers, 78-76, in the third round of the NCAA Tournament. Harrison ended up with 20 points for the Wildcats (26-10), who advance to take on Louisville next Friday in Indianapolis in the Midwest Region semifinals. Aaron Harrison added 19 points, with James Young and Julius Randle contributing 13 apiece for the victors. Cleanthony Early totaled a game-high 31 points for the Shockers (35-1), who set an NCAA record for most wins in one season without suffering a loss, but ultimately failed in their bid to reach the Final Four for the second straight year. Ron Baker converted 4-of-6 shots from long range en route to 20 points, but VanVleet was held to four points on 1-of-6 shooting, including 0-for-4 from beyond the arc. A long two by Early put WSU up 71-70 with 2:16 remaining, but Young countered with a triple from the top of the key and Kentucky took a 73-71 edge on the next possession. A trey from Tekele Cotton then rolled in and out, and Andrew Harrison made two at the line with 42.6 showing for a four-point Wildcats spread. Baker hit a banked three from the left side to bring the Shockers within 75-74, before Randle drained both of his free throws to push his clubs edge back to three. Baker was called upon again from the left wing, but his next long-range attempt fell short. Early, however, was fouled on the offensive board and made two at the line with 9.8 to play for a 77-76 score. Andrew Harrison earned his second chance at the charity stripe, making the first and missing the second. Early picked up the ball, flew up court and Wichita State called timeout with 3.2 seconds to go. VanVleet let fly from 25 feet away, but the shot was just off the mark, hitting the rim and backboard. Andrew Harrisons triple gave the Wildcats some separation prior to the midway point of the opening 20 minutes at 19-15, but the edge was short lived. Kentucky was forced to call a timeout after a runner from Early made it 30-23. Cotton began the eventual 17-4 surge with the first five, while VanVleet contributed all four of his points — including two closing free throws — for a 32-23 spread with 4:37 left in the half. Wichita State went to intermission ahead 37-31 after a triple by Jarrod Polson reduced Kentuckys gap. Earlys three to kick off the second half was countered by 10 in a row from Kentucky, which took a 41-40 lead after Alex Poythress converted a layup. Baker followed with six in a row on a trey and a three-point play and WSU held a 46-43 lead, then the Wildcats struck back for seven straight and Willie Cauley-Steins slam put them up 50-46. Momentum shifted once more, as the Shockers embarked on a 12-5 run ending just after the midway point of the half to take a 58-55 advantage on the second of Earlys back-to-back buckets. Wichita State held Kentucky at arms length until a roller from Young put the Wildcats up 70-69 with 2:49 to play. Game Notes These programs met for the first time on Sunday … Early shot 12-of-17 from the field and made 4-of-6 shots from distance … Randle led all players with 10 rebounds and dished out a team-high six assists … Cotton finished with only five points, five assists and three rebounds in 31 minutes … Wichita State committed only nine turnovers and forced Kentucky to cough up the ball 11 times. nfl jerseys china . Jarome Iginla and Zdeno Chara each had two goals, Tuukka Rask made 25 saves and the Bruins beat the Philadelphia Flyers 6-1 Saturday. Love started practicing early for All-Star festivities, making six of 11 shots from 3-point range and totalling 32 points, 11 rebounds and eight assists to lead the Timberwolves to a 117-90 victory over the Nuggets on Wednesday night. http://www.cheapjerseyssafe.com/. Make that 2-40 now. Tony Gwynn Jr. led off the ninth with a walk against Miami closer Steve Cishek and later scored, Ben Revere added the go-ahead run when Miami second baseman Donovan Solano bobbled a potential double-play grounder and the Phillies rallied past the Marlins 5-4 Thursday night to snap a six-game losing streak. Mata had already been dropped from Spains squad once this season and with the country blessed with so many playmakers, he was in real danger of being overlooked for the trip to Brazil to defend their title.OAKLAND, Calif. – Pizza delivery, courtesy of Jeff Francoeur. The Kansas City Royals right fielder had 20 personal pizzas delivered Wednesday to a small but animated group of Oakland Athletics fans in section 149 of the Coliseum. The gesture came a day after the second annual “Bacon Tuesday,” as it has become known. Last year, Francoeur tossed a ball wrapped in a $100 bill into the elevated bleacher seats above his outfield spot, instructing fans to use it to buy bacon or beer. They now love Francoeur and cheer him at every chance. On Tuesday, fans wore “Bacon Tuesday” shirts, and theres a large piece of paper bacon hanging from the railing in his honour. A member of the visiting clubhouse staff brought the pizzas to the fans in the first inning during the finale of a three-gaame series.dddddddddddd With the free eats came a signed bat from Francoeur and a note: “Right field bleacher crew, keep making bacon.” The crowd oohed and aahed, clapped, hollered and repeatedly chanted, “Thank you, Jeff!” as he took his position in the bottom of the inning. Francoeur tipped his cap and waved. “Baseball is fun. We can take it too serious sometimes,” Francoeur said before the game. “This is something more than just baseball. That right-field section are here every game, they cheer for every (As player). They are diehards. I just enjoy them out there. Its a lot of fun. You dont get to build relationships like that every day.” The fans will have to enjoy the pizza while they can. This is the Royals lone trip to the Bay Area this year. CHICAGO — Max Scherzer wasnt at his best Wednesday. But it was more than enough to beat the White Sox. Scherzer threw six scoreless innings and the Detroit Tigers beat the Chicago White Sox 5-1 to finish a two-game sweep. Scherzer (3-1) won his third straight start, allowing four hits while striking out seven to become the first pitcher in team history with at least seven strikeouts in each of his first six starts. He also became the first in the majors to do it since Tim Lincecum began the 2010 season with at least six strikeouts in his first seven starts. But it was the three walks and 105 pitches that gnawed at the reigning AL Cy Young Award winner. “They fought me all the way through the whole at-bat,” Scherzer said. “I just thought I could have been a little more efficient so I could have pitched deeper into the game.” Scherzer beat the White Sox for the second straight time, following up his April 24 win when he went six innings and allowed two runs in a 7-4 victory. He also helped Tigers win for the fourth time in five games, and shut down the powerful White Sox offence for the second straight day. “Yeah, we missed out on a couple of opportunities today and yesterday too, but those guys are pretty good pitchers and have been for a while,” White Sox catcher Tyler Flowers said. “They do some good things in those situations and get the job done. We just have to find a way to battle through on some of those and get some runs across.” On Tuesday, Justin Verlander and two relievers held the White Sox to seven hits in a 4-3 Detroit win. Scherzer and the Tigers continued that Wednesday against a team that started the day first in the American League in runs and second in home runs and slugging, coming within one out of a shutout. “Theres 29 other managers that would like to be able to do that,” Detroits Brad Ausmus said of starting Verlander and Scherzer on consecutive days. Chicagos Robin Ventura is certainly one of those managers. As with Flowers, he heaped praise on Scherzer. “Hes great, hes always tough. You get some guys on, you get opportunities and thats when good pitchers really show their stuff. He did that today,” Ventura said. “We at least got him a high pitch count and he couldnt get eight or nine innings. But, hes just tough.” The Tigers got all the runs they needed in a four-run fourth, when Detroit scored four times against Hector Noesi (0-2). Bryan Holaday capped the rally with a two-run double. Noesi, making a spot start for Chicago, went 3 2-3 innings, allowing four runs and five hits. He breezed through the first three innings, but ran into trouble in the fourth in his first start of the season. “We dont know much about the guy, and I dont think he has been extended that far so it may have been a combination of the hitters getting a chance to see him a few times and also maybe because he hadnt been as deep into a game this year,” Ausmus said. “He could have been getting a little tired as well.” The White Sox challenged Scherzer as well, but left seven runners on against the Tigers righty. “Im very cognizant of what theyre able to do and always willing to give them credit,” Scherzer said. “Today I thought they did a good job of battling me but when push came to shove I thought I was better.” NOTES: The Tigers announced that left-hander Robbie Ray will make his major-league debut Tuesday in Detroit against the Astros. Ray, 22, was acquired this off-season from the Nationals as part of the trade that sent starter Doug Fister to Washington, and will start in place of injured starter Anibal Sanchez. Sanchez is on the disabled list with a laceration on his right middle finger and threw from flat ground prior to Wednesdays game. . C Alex Avila missed his second straight game with back spasms. . Robin Ventura said LHP Chris Sale is “feeling better” but a rehab start is a possibility if his recovery continues to be extended. Sale has been on the disabled list since April 22 — retroactive to April 18 - with a flexor muscle strain in his left arm. Ventura also said RHP Felipe Paulino (right rotator cuff inflammation) will have a rehab assignment coming up “pretty soon.” www.sal…] . BUFFALO, N.Y. - Syracuse guard Trevor Cooney was mired in a shooting slump, and his woes coincided with a late-season swoon by the Orange. Say goodbye to both. Cooney scored 18 points, fellow guard Tyler Ennis of Brampton, Ont., had 16, and the Orange defence clamped down in a 77-53 victory over Western Michigan on Thursday in the second round of the NCAA tournament. Cooney hit 4 of 8 from beyond the arc and Ennis had six assists with one turnover to spark the Orange, who shot 28 of 57 (49.1 per cent) from the field and hit 7 of 17 from long range. “It was just good to see one go in,” Cooney said. “It adds to your confidence a little bit, and I was able to get into a good rhythm and guys found me in good spots. The ball just went in today.” Since matching a school record with nine 3-pointers that keyed a six-point win over Notre Dame last month, Cooney had hit just 10 of 51 (19.6 per cent) from beyond the arc. That abysmal shooting came during Syracuses swoon, which included a three-point loss to North Carolina State in the ACC tournament last week. Thats all forgotten now. “Same guy,” Syracuse coach Jim Boeheim said. “Hes just got to get his looks and take them. Hes definitely stayed up the whole time. Hes played the other parts of the game. Its a big difference when he makes shots.” Syracuse (28-5), the third seed in the South Regional, will play 11th-seeded Dayton (24-10) on Saturday. Dayton beat Ohio State 60-59 on Thursday. The Orange won their first 25 games and were ranked No. 1 for three weeks before losing five of seven in that late-season skid. Western Michigan (23-10), the Mid-American Conference champion, had won 14 of 16 games and was in the NCAA tournament for the first time in a decade. The Orange forced 11 turnovers in the opening half and scored 13 points off them in running out to a double-digit lead before the midpoint of the period. Syracuse used an 18-4 spurt over 10 minutes to take control and led 40-21 at halftime. The Broncos took care of the ball in the second half, losing it only twice, but the deficit was much too daunting to overcome as Syracuse dominated the glass 41-25 and scored 15 second-chance points. “We ran into a buzz saw today,” WMU coach Steve Hawkins said. “We made too many mistakes in the first half. We had 11 turnovers in the first half and thats what staked them out to that lead. I felt like after we started taking care of the ball in the second half, we got a few better looks.” Jerami Grant finished with 16 points, while C.J. Fair, double and triple-teamed nearly every time he touched the ball, finished with 14 points and 11 rebounds. Shayne Whittington and Tucker Haymond led Western Michigan with 11 points apiece. David Brown, the MAC scoring champion, finished with a season-low nine points on 2-of-12 shooting, 2 of 10 from long range. Syracuse rode its defence to the Final Four a year ago and the zone was stellar from the opening tip against the Broncos. The Broncos split two games with Eastern Michigan during the season, learning the nuances of the zone defence employed by Eagles coach Rob Murphy, an assistant at Syracuse for eight years before taking over at EMU. “We hope its a help,” Hawkins said. It wasnt. Same system, maybe, but different personnel. “Theyre long and athletic, and they make you second-guess where you want to throw the ball,” Brown said. “I feel that we were hesitant. We turned the ball over way too much.” The Syracuse defence had to focus on WMUs fifth-year seniors Whittington and Brown and did the job. Whittington was hounded in the lane, unable to generate much, taking just seven shots. And while Brown was his usual self at the free throw line, he had only four chances, hitting three. “We came out playing pressure defence,” Fair said. “We werent going to let them get comfortable.” They didnt. The Broncos committed four quick turnovers as Syracuse took a 7-2 lead on a 3-pointer by Cooney just over 3 minutes in. Brown led the MAC at 19.4 points per game and earned MVP of the conference tournament after scoring a career-high 32 points that included five 3-pointers in the final against Toledo, and he makes a good living at the free throw line. Brown was 196 of 254 (77.2 per cent) from the line, most of the fouls coming while he was attempting one of the 237 shots he took from behind the arc. He found no room to roam against the Orange, missing three times from well beyond the 3-point line before finally hitting near the midpoint of the opening half. Whittington is a hulking figure in the lane at 6-foot-11 and 250 pounds, but Grant easily spun around him and slammed home a ferocious two-handed dunk to boost the Syracuse lead to 12-4. Cooneys second 3 and a layup by Ennis had the Broncos 13 points behind and reeling. Fairs three-point play and a 3-pointer from the wing by Ennis off a feed from Grant inside gave Syracuse a 31-13 lead with 4:08 to go in the half. Whittington shook off a foul by Grant and hit a pretty hook in the lane that he turned into a three-point play and Brown followed with two free throws and his first 3 to give the Broncos a glimmer of hope. Syracuse responded with a slam dunk by senior centre Baye Moussa Keita, another 3 from Cooney, and a putback by Fair off a miss by Ennis to gain the 19-point halftime lead. If the Broncos hoped to make a comeback in the second half, that idea was quickly squashed. After a layup by Connar Tava — Grant was called for goaltending on the play — and a free throw by Haymond closed the gap to 16 points, Syracuse responded with an 8-2 spurt that Cooney started with a four-point play. CHARLESTON, S.C. — Venus Williams couldnt dig herself out of a hole this time and lost to Montreals Eugenie Bouchard 7-6 (6), 2-6, 6-4 at the Family Circle Cup on Thursday. The 33-year-old Williams had fought back in each of her first two matches to advance. She seemed to follow the same game-plan in this one, rallying from a set down to win the second set and lead 2-1 in the third. Thats when the 20-year-old Canadian, took over, breaking Williams serve twice down the stretch including the final game. “I think Ive shown to myself how mentally strong I can be,” said Bouchard, seeded sixth at the Family Circle. “Today was really a mental battle. It was a bit ugly at times and tough on the court, but I fought through it.” Bouchard finished things off by reaching Williams drop shot and pushing it into the open court for her first victory over the seven-time Grand Slam champion. “She played a lot more consistently than I did,” Williams said. “I think my errors really hurt me a lot today. Just a lot of up and down, a lot of errors.” Especially in two key stretches when it looked as if the 33-year-old Williams was ready to take control. Bouchard was ahead 5-3 in the opening set when Williams rallied and held two set points in the tiebreaker. But Bouchard won the next four points, including a crisp backhand for a winner to secure the set. When Williams moved on top in the third set, Bouchard did not panic but dug in to move on to her third quarter-final round this year. “Ive just kind of raised my game a little bit and was extra solid on those important points,” Bouchard said. Bouchard will next face second-seed Jelena Jankovic, the 2007 Family Circle champion who at No. 8 in world is the highest-ranked player remaining in the tournament. Jankovic defeated Croatias Ajla Tomljanovic 7-5, 6-1. Jankovic has reached the Family Circle quarter-finals in six of the past seven seasons. Shes been beaten by a Williams sister each of the last two years, falling to Venus in 2012 and to Serena in last years championship finals. Jankovic struggled early as the 20-year-old Tomljanovic fought ooff a set point to tie the opening set at 5-all.dddddddddddd Jankovic then won eight of the next nine games to move forward. “I missed that overhead on my set point, which was kind of frustrating, and we levelled it at 5 5,” Jankovic said. “But I was able to stay calm and regroup and finish that set. So that was very important.” Williams defeat was part of a difficult day for past champions of the clay-court event. Along with 2004 winner Williams, two other previous Family Circle champs in Sabine Lisicki (2009) and Samantha Stosur (2010) lost third-round matches. Lisicki, the fourth seed, fell to German countrywoman Andrea Petkovic 6-1, 6-0. Stosur, seeded seventh, was beaten by No. 9 seed Lucie Safarova 3-6, 6-4, 6-4. The loss ends a run of success for the Williams family on the courts here. Sister Serena was the two-time defending tournament champion before losing Tuesday night. Venus played with the Washington Kastles on the green clay to win the 2012 World Team Tennis title. Venus Williams had been bothered by an illness that she said limited her endurance this week. She had to come from behind in her first two matches here to face Bouchard and did not have enough stamina to wait out her opponents solid, flat ground strokes. “That kind of made it more challenging. I mean I think normally I would probably be able to challenge the points a little bit longer and just make her play more shots and just be more willing to play longer points,” Williams said. Williams was the 2004 Family Circle champion. She reached the semifinals here last year where she lost to sister Serena, the eventual champion. Others advancing to the round of eight included third-seed Sara Errani, who outlasted Peng Shuai, 7-6 (6), 7-6 (5); unseeded Jana Cepelova, who defeated 13th-seed Elena Visnina 7-6 (4), 3-6, 6-3; and 12th-seed Daniela Hantuchova, who beat Teliana Pereira 6-2, 6-3. Errani rallied in each of her sets to eliminate Peng, the worlds top-ranked doubles player. For Cepelova, it was her second big victory of this event after knocking off world No. 1 Serena Williams in a stunner Tuesday night. With a National Hockey Leagues worst record of 2-11-1, the Columbus Blue Jackets might be getting some good news. According to the Columbus Dispatch, injured forward Jeff Carter skated with the club for 20 minutes at practice on Monday, and he is hopeful to be ready to play when the club faces the Chicago Blackhawks on Thursday. “Im usually pretty quick to get back to speed,” Carter told the Dispatch. “I have to get a decent practice in before I know how it feels. Ill probably know more (on Tuesday).” Carter, who was acquired from the Philadelphia Flyers in the off-season, has been out of the lineup since breaking his foot on October 15. The 26-year-old recorded three assists in five games before the injury. The Bruins have been consistently among the top teams for the past few months, but their current run has taken them to the top, despite not having a strength of schedule deficit compared to the Western Conference powers. Moving up this week, the Pittsburgh Penguins go from nine to six. Even though they have just one regulation win in the past six games, the Penguins also got wingers Chris Kunitz and James Neal back from injuries and that provides a relative boost compared to last weeks ranking. The never-say-die Detroit Red Wings are still hanging around in the playoff race, thanks largely to Gustav Nyquist, who has seven goals in the past six games, to help Detroit go 4-1-1 and jump to seventh in the Eastern Conference. The Red Wings, still depleted by injuries, are up from 24 to 21. Heading the otther way, the Toronto Maple Leafs have dropped five straight as goaltender James Reimer has struggled to fill in for injured starter Jonathan Bernier and the Leafs dont play a structured enough game to get by without great goaltending.ddddddddddddAs a result, they sink from 17 to 22. Both the Carolina Hurricanes and Ottawa Senators dropped three spots, to 25 and 26, respectively, not through any great failings of their own, but the Detroit Red Wings, Vancouver Canucks and Calgary Flames all performed better and/or got healthier. Among other Canadian clubs, the Montreal Canadiens are up one spot, to 12, and the Winnipeg Jets are up two spots to 17. The Vancouver Canucks and Calgary Flames are both up a couple of places, to 23 and 24, respectively. MILWAUKEE – The Milwaukee Bucks have been awarded the contract of Kendall Marshall, the second-year guard who was waived last week by the Los Angeles Lakers. ENGLEWOOD, Colo. — The Colorado Avalanche will be heading into their first post-season in four years without leading scorer Matt Duchene after the forward suffered a quirky left knee injury. Duchene hurt his medial collateral ligament when he ran into a teammate on the opening shift against San Jose over the weekend. Hes expected to miss about four weeks. The loss is a big blow for the Avalanche, who have turned things around in coach Patrick Roys first season in charge and are in the running for home-ice advantage with eight games remaining. “We hope for a speedy recovery to be back as soon as he can,” Ryan OReilly said after practice Monday. Duchene was trying to avoid a collision with teammate Jamie McGinn, but they awkwardly bumped anyway near the Sharks blue line. Duchene fell to the ice and then gingerly skated to the bench. “One of those freak accidents in hockey,” McGinn said. McGinn said hes called and texted Duchene, telling him to “stay positive.” Duchene posted on his Twitter account Monday that the “thought of not playing in the first round for me has been devastating.” He added that he will be “doing everything in my power to be ready for Game 1… And if not then, shortly after!” The 23-year-old Duchene has set career highs this season in points (70), assists (47) and shots (217). He missed three games earlier this season with an oblique injury. The team went 3-0 in his absence. For now, Roy said the plan is to move rookie Nathan MacKinnon to centre to fill in for Duchene, with OReilly and McGinn playing on the wings. “Weve been finding ways to win games,” Roy said. “Well continue to find ways to win.” Heres an encouraging sign: P.A. Parenteau, who sprained his knee on March 10, briefly skated on his own Monday. Roy said Parenteau could possibly be back for the regular seaason finale in Anaheim on April 13.dddddddddddd “We have depth and a lot of confidence in our players,” Roy said. “Our players have a lot of confidence in themselves. Its a team concept. Its how weve been winning our games. Its not going to change.” Right after practice, Roy assembled his team at centre ice, just to give them one final pep talk before taking off for their game in Columbus on Tuesday. He told them he was “proud of them” and that the team shouldnt be satisfied, especially with Colorado trailing Central Division-leading St. Louis by only seven points. The message was well received. “All year, guys have stepped up and done a great job,” McGinn said. “We just stay positive and work hard and good things will happen.” Asked if there was any pressure stepping in for Duchene, MacKinnon responded, “No.” “Im not going to try to replace Dutchy, because you cant,” said MacKinnon, a clear favourite for rookie of the year. “Matt is a big-time player and were going to have to find ways to win without him.” Roy knows all about missing an integral player for the post-season. He and the Avalanche were without Peter Forsberg during their 2001 Stanley Cup run when Forsberg had to have his spleen removed after the first round. The team carried on without the Swedish star, beating the New Jersey Devils in Game 7 to win the title. “Thats the way it was in 2001 — it was about the team,” Roy said. "Peter was a very important player on that team, dont get me wrong. But our culture was we had to work hard every time we were on the ice. We had to find ways to win hockey games. “Thats what this team has been doing all year. This is what were talking about when youre talking about a team changing their culture. Were not looking for an excuse. Were looking for a solution.” cheap nfl jerseys wholesale jerseys ’ ’ ’
