Canadas national mens team begins its quest for a 25th gold medal at the world championship on Friday when it faces France in the Group A opener in in Minsk, Belarus. You can catch the action live on TSN and TSN GO at 9:30am et/6:30am pt. Toronto Maple Leafs goaltender James Reimer gets the call in net for the opener. Coach Dave Tippett said he chose Reimer over Edmonton Oilers goalie Ben Scrivens strictly on seniority. Its expected that both goalies will split time at the tournament, with Scrivens likely seeing action in Canadas next game on Saturday against Slovakia. “It goes solely off seniority,” Tippett said. “Scrivens was upset because he thought he shouldve got the call because he had 19 seconds longer than Reimer the other day (in the exhibition game).” While this is Scrivens first time representing Canada at any level, Reimer last played for Canada at the 2011 World Championships in Slovakia, where he posting a 4-0 record in the group stage. On Thursday, coach Tippett kept the top line of Alex Burrows, Kyle Turris and Nathan MacKinnon together from Tuesdays exhibition game and tinkered elsewhere. Nazem Kadri centred Cody Hodgson and Troy Brouwer, while Philadelphia Flyers teammates Brayden Schenn and Matt Read skated with Jonathan Huberdeau. Jason Chimera and Capitals teammate Joel Ward remained together, and Tippett said hell keep an eye on having either Mark Scheifele or Sean Monahan between them. “Youve got to get your players in roles early,” Tippett said. “Always subject to change, but I think one of the most important factors of a tournament like this is you try to get everybody in their spots as quick as you can.” Kevin Bieksa was named Team Canadas captain on Thursday. Tippett said Bieksa got the nod because hes outgoing but also plays hard and with passion. Chimera is one alternate because he brings the experience of winning at this tournament before and Turris is the other because he bridges young and old on the roster. “He keeps it fun, he likes to have a good time,” Burrows said. “But at the same time when its time to work and do the right things, hes the first one to lead the way.” Following Fridays game against France, Canada faces Slovakia on Saturday. The game can be seen live on TSN and TSN GO at 1:30pm et/10:30am pt. . The incident happened during Barcelonas 3-2 win at Villarreal on April 27th when Alves, who is black, picked up the banana thrown by 26-year-old David Campayo Lleo, bit off a piece and then discarded it.KAMLOOPS, B.C. — Kevin Glenn was all set to be the Ottawa Redblacks first starting quarterback. The team selected him first overall in the expansion draft to stock the CFLs ninth franchise, and following years of uncertainty he was preparing to once again be an undisputed No. 1 pivot. Then almost overnight, circumstances changed dramatically. The Hamilton Tiger-Cats released veteran quarterback Henry Burris — who led them to last years Grey Cup — at the end of January after signing Zach Collaros to be their new starter, creating an opportunity the Redblacks felt they couldnt pass up. Ottawa signed Burris to a three-year contract a few days later to be the face of the franchise — a move that Glenn met with a trade demand, one that was finally granted last month at the draft when the Redblacks dealt him to the B.C. Lions. Now at training camp with his new team and happy to be wanted, theres still a tinge of bitterness in Glenns voice when talk turns to the way things played out in the nations capital. “Everybody knows the situation in Ottawa,” the 34-year-old said this week. “I was kind of blindsided into what was going on because, not getting into everything … they knew that I wanted to be the guy in order to be in Ottawa.” He said the Redblacks didnt notify him they intended to sign Burris, simply adding: “I got it in the news the same day that it actually happened.” Glenn wouldnt speculate on how things would have played out if Ottawa had let him know what they were thinking prior to the move, but hes comfortable with his new teammates and eager to contribute. “To me, its just a better situation than it was in Ottawa. Im just being honest, from top to bottom,” he said. “It is it what it is. You dont worry about that kind of stuff. You sit back and you let everything else take care of itself. You only handle what you can handle.” He points to a roster filled with players who won a championship three years ago as why he was willing to be the No. 2 quarterback behind Travis Lulay in B.C., something he wasnt able to accept with the Redblacks. “This is not any knock towards the Ottawa franchise or the league or the fans in Ottawa or anything,” said Glenn. “Youre dealing with an expansion team versus a team (with) a lot guys who actually won the Grey Cup in 2011.” Glenn could have eventually been given a shot behind Burris, who turns 39 on Wednesday, but theres a chance he might start the Lions season opener as Lulay continues to recover from off-season shoulder surgery. “Its more opportunity. Im going to be honest,” he said. "I think thats one of the reasons why B.C. made the trade — just to say we can get another quality guy. “I think the biggest thing for us is we have two guys who can win games.” Lions head coach Mike Benevides said the team was desperate to add experienced depth at quarterback and it just worked out that Glenns situation changed at the right time. “I cant overstate how important it was to get Kevin,” said Benevides. “When you take a look at where Travis is, we know were going to need all of training camp to get him where we need to get him to.dddddddddddd When you take a look at Kevin, what Ive seen thus far (is) an outstanding teammate, a pro thats been around 14 years.” Glenn led the Calgary Stampeders to the 2012 Grey Cup game and has thrown for 39,418 yards and 222 touchdowns against 151 interceptions over his career while completing 62 per cent of his passes. “Hes thrilled to be here. He wanted to change. He got the change that he wanted, and for us now he gets to explore a lot of our offence,” said Benevides. “Its a good marriage and I think hell be able to play at a moments notice.” First-year Lions offensive co-ordinator Khari Jones, who has both played with and coached Glenn in the past, said it was critical to add a viable second option under centre after B.C. lost backup Thomas DeMarco in the expansion draft. “In this league right now you can never have too many quality quarterbacks,” said Jones. “Its a tough league. Its a tough league to play 18 games and you want to have the opportunity when your starter might not be in there to have someone whos a starter in his own right to come in and play good football and help you win games.” Although they both want to be on the field when B.C. opens its regular-season schedule later this month, Glenn and Lulay have already struck up a good working relationship, even making the four-hour drive from the Vancouver area up to Thompson Rivers University for training camp together in the same car. “Hes welcomed me with open arms (even though) were two guys fighting for the same position,” said Glenn. “That right there, hands down I have respect for you. Were not even talking about stuff on the football field and how you play, but just the person that he is.” Lulay said he watched Glenn from afar as an opponent and was impressed by how he dealt with platoon situations in Hamilton and Calgary in recent years. “He was always a guy I thought pretty highly of. Hes been a consistent guy and been able to play at a high level. Hes been in a lot of different situations,” said Lulay. "Being able to overcome that and focus on being able to go out and play and playing well, that built a lot of respect from your peer group. “Knowing that hes a guy whos seen the highs, hes seen the lows of playing the position in the league, that just builds a lot respect before I even had known him. It helps us break that trust barrier a little quicker.” Glenns ability to work in a number of different scenarios has also taken some of the pressure off Lulay to rush back from injury for a team that will be feeling the heat to perform in the tough West Division as Grey Cup hosts. “One of the things about being injured is you feel like youre letting your teammates down by not being able to be out there with them,” said Lulay. "Having a guy you can trust to lead the team is really important. “A guy that plays 14 years in this league, that doesnt happen by accident.” cheap nfl jerseys wholesale jerseys ’ ’ ’

WINNIPEG — Toronto Argonauts cornerback Byron Parker returned his ninth interception for a touchdown Friday, setting a new CFL career record. Parkers record-breaking interception came in the second quarter of Torontos game against the Winnipeg Blue Bombers. Winnipeg quarterback Buck Pierce threw an ugly pass while under pressure from Torontos Lin-J Shell, and Parker stepped in front of Bombers receiver Aaron Hargreaves and took the ball 48 yards for the touchdown. Former Argonauts great Dick Thornton, former Edmonton Eskimo and Saskatchewan Roughrider Malcolm Frank and former Eskimo and Hamilton Tiger-Cat Jason Goss are tied for second with eight touchdowns off interceptions. In a match pitting together two stylists, the sixth-seeded Swiss quickly took control and broke Gasquet four times in the match. The Frenchman hit only 11 winners and looked inhibited throughout. Federer, who has won a record six year-end championships, was not having a great day either — he had 30 unforced errors — but prevailed on important points as Gasquet converted only one of his six break chances. Federer needed five match points to earn his 43rd Finals win. “It is a big win for me and hopefully I can keep it up in the next match against Juan Martin del Potro,” said Federer, chasing only his second title of the year. “Im not coming back from a serious injury, but Im coming back from a lot of sort of ups and downs, resetting things, trying out things, making sure I get my confidence back, my movement and so forth.” Federer and Gasquet lost their opening round-robin matches in Group B, against defendiing champion Novak Djokovic and del Potro, respectively.dddddddddddd Djokovic played del Potro late Thursday. Only once in his previous 11 Finals appearances has Federer failed to advance to the last four. A win against del Potro on Saturday will guarantee him a spot in the semis, while Gasquet became the second player to be eliminated, following David Ferrer. It was Federers 11th win in 13 matches against Gasquet, who started by winning his first service game at love before fading. The Finals are Federers last chance to win a big tournament this season. He has won only one title in the past 14 months and has only three victories against top-10 opponents in 2013, including one against del Potro in Paris last week. “Im glad I got one back in Paris because I knew we could be again in the same group, we could be playing each other,” Federer said. “I think that win for me in Paris psychologically was very important. I could beat top-10 guys, I beat Richard, I beat Juan Martin last week. BARCELONA, Spain — Cristiano Ronaldo netted another hat trick in Real Madrids 5-1 win over Real Sociedad on Saturday, as the Portugal forward extended his scoring run to nine goals in his last four games. Ronaldos latest bundle of goals took him three past Atletico Madrids Diego Costa as the leading scorer in the Spanish league with 16 through 13 rounds. Ronaldo also tops the Champions League with eight goals. “(Ronaldo) is playing on another level,” Madrid coach Carlo Ancelotti said. “He scores with such incredible ease. Its tough to find words to describe him.” Madrids win pulled it to within two points of Atletico and three points behind league leader Barcelona before they have matches on Sunday. Ronaldo opened the scoring, adding another goal from the penalty spot and a third with a well-placed free kick. Karim Benzema also kept up his good form by scoring while Gareth Bale set up Sami Khedira for a goal. Ronaldo has eight multi-goal performances, including three hat tricks, in 17 matches for Madrid this season. He will hope to keep his streak going when Portugal plays Sweden in a two-leg playoff on Nov. 15 and 19 with only the winner qualifying for the 2014 World Cup. “It will be a very important tie for us,” Ronaldo said. “We want to be in the World Cup and we will try our hardest to get there.” Elsewhere, Athletic Bilbao rallied past Levante 2-1 to provisionally move even on points with Villarreal in fourth place. Rayo Vallecano won 2-0 at Celta Vigo to escape last place and push Real Betis down into the cellar overnight. Elche, meanwhile, earned a 1-1 draw at Getafe to remain unbeaten in its last four away matches. Sociedad never stood a chance at the Santiago Bernabeu against a Madrid side that kept its attack firing away for a fourth straight game while finally shoring up a defence that had become penalty prone with five whistled against it in the previous three games. Ancelotti promised on Friday that his team would win over the demanding Bernabeu crowd by improving its style of play. A day later, the Italian manager called his teams first half “perfect.” Tough to argue with that. Ronaldo lashed a shot off the top of the crossbar in the eighth minute in a warning of what was to come. He then made sure not to miss in the 12th when Benzema spotted him switched to the right side of the attack with a floated pass that Ronaldo batted down and blasted by Sociedad goalkeeper Claudio Bravo. Ronaldo returned the favour four minutes later by dribbling down the left flank and squaring for Benzema to volley in his fourth goal in as many games. A stunned Sociedad helped concede the third goal when Ronaldos low shot hit Markel Bergaras arm inside the area. Instead of drilling his spot kick, Ronaldo lured Bravo into diving to one side while he gently placed the ball down the middle. “Too many times we were just looking on,” said Antoine Griezmann, who scored Sociedads consolation goal. Bale found Khedira alone on the edge of the box for the midfielders first goal of the campaign in the 36th. Sociedad didnt threaten the hosts area until the 61st when Griezmann ran on to a pass awkwardly headed back by Madrid defender Pepe that he skillfully chipped over goalie Diego Lopez. That gave Griezmann eight goals in the league, drawing the Sociedad forward level with Barcelonas Lionel Messi for the leagues third-leading scorer. The victory was secure but Ronaldo wasnt done and curled a free kick over the barrier in the 76th, as a flat-footed Bravo was turned into a bystander. Bilbaos win over Levante was the fifth time in as many games at its new San Mames Stadium that the Basque club has come from behind to stayed undefeated at home, and Rayo kept Celta winless at home in seven matches at Balaidos Stadium this season. On Sunday, Barcelona visits Betis while Atletico travels to Villarreal. Also, Espanyol hosts Sevilla and Valencia welcomes Valladolid. The German canoeist says she is suffering from a heart muscle inflammation and has been told by doctors that she cannot compete.Manchester, England (Sports Network) – Manchester City will host Manchester United at the Etihad on Sunday in what is shaping up to be another classic derby between two bitter rivals. Both sides come into the affair on seven points in the Premier League table, three points off the pace of first-place Liverpool. They also are riding high after picking up wins in Champions League action on Tuesday. City cruised to a 3-0 victory at Viktoria Plzen while United battled to a 4-2 defeat of Bayer Leverkusen, a pleasing result given the impact that Wayne Rooney had on the proceedings. The Englishman bagged a brace in Tuesdays clash to become Great Britains all-time leading scorer in the Champions League with 29 goals. He also brought his United tally to 200 goals across all competitions. “It was probably Waynes best performance that Ive seen for a while,” United midfielder Michael Carrick told the clubs official website. "Its great to have him in that form – he can be untouchable when hes like that. “To have lads like that in your team is brilliant. I thought Antonio (Valencia) was immense on Tuesday night as well and to have Wayne and Robin (van Persie) scoring and assisting is fantastic. Even if theyre maybe not having the best of games they can always come up with something. I thought they played really well on Tuesday.” The performance puts United in good stead heading into such a massive fixture, and the Red Devils will have three points in their sights having turned out some solid displays thus far. “I dont think weve played that badly so far this season,” Carrick added. "The Swansea (win) was a good game, the Chelsea one was tight, but Liverpool is always a bit of a one-off game which you cant really read too much into. “We won at the weekend, and on Tuesday we took it to another level and improved again. Hopefully we can do it again on Sunday. The performance will breed confidence, and well have to do it all again on Sunday.” United proved last season that the club is capable of winning at the Etihad as the Red Devils marched on to three points with a 3-2 win in the corresponding fixture last tterm.dddddddddddd Rooney produced two goals that were eventually canceled out by Yaya Toure and Pablo Zabaleta, but it was van Persies last-gasp free kick that proved to be the difference between the two sides. City will be eager to erase any lingering memories of that defeat, as well as its title concession to United at the end of the season, but it will need to overcome any travel fatigue that may have set in from the clubs midweek journey to the Czech Republic. Arsenal also endured some travel during the week as it claimed a 2-1 victory over Marseille at the Stade Velodrome on Wednesday, but the Gunners will not enjoy the extra day of rest that the Citizens were afforded. Arsene Wengers side, looking to make it a fourth straight Premier League win, will take on Stoke City at the Emirates on Sunday. Also on Sunday, Tottenham, which hosted Tromso in Europa League action on Thursday, will head to Cardiff City Stadium to take on the Bluebirds while Swansea City, fresh off of its comfortable Europa League victory at Valencia, will travel to Selhurst Park to face Crystal Palace. West Bromwich Albion and Sunderland have struggled mightily out of the gates this season. Neither side has managed to earn a win through four matches, but they will fancy their chances to claim maximum points on Saturday when the bottom-two clubs do battle at the Hawthorns. First-place Liverpool enters the weekend in a rare position as it looks down at the rest of the Premier League with 10 points through four games. The Reds will return to action following Mondays 2-2 draw at Swansea City with a potentially tricky fixture against Southampton at Anfield on Saturday. Elsewhere on Saturday, former Norwich City boss Paul Lambert returns to Carrow Road as he leads his Aston Villa side into a contest with the Canaries, Newcastle looks to extend its unbeaten run to four games with a positive result against Hull City at St. James Park, Everton tests its unbeaten start to the season with a trip to Upton Park to take on West Ham, and Chelsea looks to return to winning ways after back-to-back defeats to Everton and FC Basel when it welcomes Fulham to Stamford Bridge. Several top executives at Pilot Flying J, including the president, abruptly left this week, more than a year after FBI agents raided the Knoxville, Tennessee, headquarters of the nations largest diesel retailer. Ten former employees have previously pleaded guilty to helping cheat trucking companies out of promised rebates and discounts. Those cases and this weeks departures, observers note, could indicate that prosecutors are entering the final phase of a methodical probe that has included records suggesting Pilot CEO and Browns owner Jimmy Haslam knew of the scheme, something he denies. One expert said Haslam might be cutting ties with his senior staff in a bid to persuade prosecutors not to charge the company his father founded decades ago, one in which his brother, Gov. Bill Haslam, still holds an undisclosed stake. Pilot President Mark Hazelwood and Scott “Scooter” Wombold, vice-president of national accounts, left the company Monday, with Haslam sending a company-wide email thanking Hazelwood for his service but saying nothing about why or how he was leaving. Tuesday saw the departure of five more members of the sales team. Dennis B. Francis, a Knoxville attorney who has worked in federal criminal defence for 40 years, said the only way this weeks departures make sense to him is if some of the people leaving are co-operating with prosecutors. For a defendant to get a lighter sentence than federal guidelines mandate, prosecutors have to file court papers saying that person provided substantial assistance to the government. Once prosecutors have the evidence they need to convict, they no longer offer any promises of special consideration. “They call it getting on the bus,” said Francis, who is not involved in the Pilot case. “And theres only so much room on the bus.” Wombolds attorney, John E. Kelly, said in an email that his client had been “helping the company repair many customer relationships during the past 14 months. Mr. Wombolds departure from the company is not connected to past guilty pleas entered into by former employees, and any inferencce that there is a connection is not accurate.dddddddddddd” Hazelwoods attorney declined to comment. Company representatives said they couldnt comment on specific personnel moves, which took place while Jimmy Haslam was meeting with fellow NFL owners in Atlanta. “Nothing more should be read into the events of this week than things playing themselves out,” spokesman Tom Ingram said Wednesday. “Otherwise, the company continues to go full steam ahead and business as usual, and is doing very well.” Jimmy Haslam has denied any previous knowledge of the fraud or any personal wrongdoing. The governor has said he is not involved with operating Pilot Flying J. Pilot agreed in November to pay out nearly $85 million to settle claims in a class-action lawsuit with 5,500 trucking companies. Several companies have filed separate lawsuits against Pilot that are ongoing. Nashville criminal defence attorney and former prosecutor David Raybin said that, based on his observations and experience, the departure of so many managers at once indicates that criminal charges could soon be filed. And he suggested that prosecutors are aiming high. “You dont make a bunch of people plead guilty at the lower levels and then let the top people off with a fine,” said Raybin, who does not represent anyone in the case. “Theyre potentially jailing five to 10 people. You dont do that unless you are targeting the highest levels of the company.” An affidavit filed last year to obtain a search warrant for Pilot headquarters states that a confidential informant told the FBI that both Hazelwood and Jimmy Haslam knew about the fraud at the company because it was discussed openly at sales meetings where both were present. Randall Eliason, a former federal prosecutor who teaches at George Washington University Law School, said that while the sudden departures are unusual, they could mean any number of things. For example, Pilot might be fearful that the company could be charged criminally, or the companys board of directors may have decided that the people who have left recently were partly responsible for what happened. “One reason the company might fire them is to say, Look, were cleaning house. Were getting rid of the bad people, so dont indict the corporation,” Eliason said. I thoroughly enjoyed March Madness, both the mens and womens versions. For three weeks in the early days of the spring season, I renew my subscription with college basketball and am edutained on all things March Madness. It is a time that engendered work morale spikes, rooted in imperfect bracket predictions and the chance that overworked, underpaid employees will cash out on an office pool lottery built from their very own desk change cups and afternoon Tim Hortons coffee run allotments. Mini hoops get hung on office doors for impromptu paper ball dunk contests and great plays are re-enacted by local news crews unable to air highlights of the very sport they cover because of the hierarchy of money structured agreements between the NCAA and its multiple March Madness broadcast partners. A bevy of hungry, wide-eyed teams. More Networks. Too many credit card commercials. Too Much Dick Vitale. Not Enough Bill Raftery. No Gus Johnson. Countless floor burns. Multiple tears. Clutch shots. One epic dance. One dream realized. Who knew a school from the former and now defunct Yankee Conference would be one of the most dominant basketball programs in college history? Combined, the University of Connecticut mens and womens teams have been in the NCAA Tournament final game 13 times. Theyve never lost. Ever. I watched as Geno Auriemma and his Lady Huskies won their ninth title in 19 years, defeating Notre Dame easily and once again lording over the womens game with whispers and questions rattling The ladies college hoops kings cage about whether or not his talents could be applied similarly in the mens game. I saw Guelph, Ontarios and Notre Dame senior forward Natalie Achonwa, thrice a bridesmaid, never the bride in the NCAA final, have to endure the insult of her team once again losing a chance at glory and an undefeated season to the schoolyard bully in UConn, in part due to suffering a devastating knee injury during the Elite Eight game that ended her season and college career. I was not in shock or awe that Derrick Gordon, starting guard from the University of Massachusetts, a school where I created and once taught the worlds first university accredited course on hip-hop culture, now also has the distinction of having the first Division I male basketball player to come out as openly gay. I viewed a March Madness tournament where Canadian lights shone brightly in fellow freshmen Kansas Andrew Wiggins and Syracuses Tyler Ennis, senior Melvin Ejim of Iowa State, Michigan sophomore Nik Stauskas and more. Their play shined a collective light on the immense talents north of the 49th parallel who contributed in meaningful ways during the Tournament and offered hope and confidence for young Canadian hoop stars to follow. I reveled in UConn mens coach Kevin Ollies victory over John Caliparis Kentucky Wildcats, despite picking the new Fab Five freshmen from Lexington to win it all on my TSN Radio basketball program, #1On1 with Will and Duane. And the revelry was not rooted in a dislike for Coach Cals crew. The joy was in the knowledge that, 30 years after Georgetowns John Thompson became the first black man to win an NCAA title with a team full of inner city black kids, possibly influenced by the lure of profit from a new player in the illicit drug trade called crack and the music of an emerging and grossly misunderstood subculture called hip-hop, Kevin Ollie joined Thompson, newly minted Naismith Basketball Hall of Famer Nolan Richardson and Tubby Smith as the only black coaches to ever win the national title. My merriment was quelled, however, by the admission of the tournaments Most Outstanding Player, UConn senior PG Shabazz Napier. As initially reported by CNNs Sara Ganim, Napiers statement was stunning. “I dont feel student-athletes should get hundreds of thousands of dollars, but like I said, there are hungry nights that I go to bed and Im starving," he said. "I just feel like a student-athlete, and sometimes, like I said, theres hungry nights and Im not able to eat and I still got to play up to my capabilities.” I observed a game with multi-billion dollar stakes in which the players have no financial stake due to the draconian statutes of the National Collegiate Athletic Association, which still has them reaching for “One Shining Moment” as the UConn mens program fails to graduate more than eight per cent of its starving, underfed players. I then pondered former March Madness champ and UCLA forward Ed OBannons lawsuit against the NCAA, the Northwestern University athletes who won their fight to unionize against the NCAA and Jalen Roses youthful revelation years ago on how he and his Fab Five teammates were being flagrantly exploited by the NCAA and its corporate stakeholders while a star at Michigan. It occurred to me that the 2013-2014 mens final was possibly a referendum on the future of college basketball profiteering: Caliparis “one and done” regime versus the NCAAs preferred method of currency exchange with the NBA – keeping the student-athletes on campus playing this game for as long as possible. NBA Commissioner Adam Silvers wish to subsidize collegiate student-athletes in order to keep the collusive financial arrangement with the NCAA as close to status quo, without hemorrhaging too much blood, seems relatively progressive at cursory glance. And the new commishs potential good fortune to place a positive stamp on his early tenure may be rooted in Napiers hunger. ESPNs Darren Rovell recently reported that Adam Silver is willing to trade markers with the NCAA, its student-athletes and the NBAPA with concessions on all sides to make the vehicle move. “Rather than focusing on a salary and thinking of them as employees, I would go to their basic necessities,” said Silver. “I think if Shabazz Napier is saying he is going hungry, my God, it seems hard to believe, but there should be ample food for the players.” Commissioner Silver wants to raise the NBA entry age limit from 19 to 20 and may be able to do so in exchange for his college player subsidy initiative. Silvers very public overtures about changes that can be made to an archaic, rotted NCAA system run by that cabals boss, Dr. Mark Emmert, who, naturally, is vehemently opposed to any sort of compensation for student-athletes, a term created to protect the schools and NCAA itself against the liability of paying workers compensation for injured “student-athletes,” are encouraging, even in theory. But what about offering a “bare necessities” cost of living stipend, daily meal per diems and limited injury insurance to these young men, who may or may not be ready for the fine hardwood courts of the National Basketball Association, but wish to ply their trade professionally? Is it possible for these young men to also get an education with the same subsidies Commissioner Silver is suggesting for the NCAA by giving these monies to the NBAs already-established minor league, the National Basketball Development League? No matter the motivations of Adam Silver, it would seem that the winds of change are on the horizon for intercollegiate athletics and its long partnership with professional sport to finally call it what it really is now. So yeah… Thats what I learned during March Madness this year. I can only hope you learned some things, too. . The 11-year NBA veteran scored 18 of his 28 points in the third quarter and the Los Angeles Clippers beat the Phoenix Suns 104-96 Tuesday to match their season best of five victories in a row. CHICAGO — Ryne Sandberg grinned the whole time. On a hot, sweaty day, the Hall of Famer looked cool and comfortable. Back at Wrigley Field for the first time as a major league manager, this was exactly where he wanted to be. Sandberg brought his Philadelphia Phillies to Chicago on Friday to open a three-game series against the Cubs. It was his first trip to the ballpark where he rose to prominence during a 16-year playing career since he was promoted to the interim job on Aug. 16 after Charlie Manuel was fired. “It means so much,” Sandberg said from the visitors dugout on Friday. “A little different view from this angle here looking out but other than that, this was a place that was very comfortable for me as a player. It always solved any slumps that I was in as a hitter.” Sandbergs consistent, steady play over 15 seasons in Chicago turned him into one of the most beloved figures in the history of the woebegone franchise. Nicknamed “Ryno,” he finished his career with a .285 batting average, 282 homers and 1,061 RBIs. The second baseman had his No. 23 retired by the team in 2005, the same year he was enshrined in Cooperstown. He got quite the reception in his return to Chicagos cozy neighbourhood ballpark. The marquee at one neighbouring bar read “WELCOME HOME RYNO,” and the Cubs showed highlights from Sandbergs career on the scoreboard in right field before the game, along with a welcome back message. The smallish afternoon crowd cheered when he was introduced along with Philadelphias starting lineup, and again when he brought the lineup card out to home plate. “The guy coming back to a place that he was a Hall of Famer deserves a lot of attention,” Cubs manager Dale Sveum said. “He had one heck of a career here in Chicago. On the field, off the field, the ultimate professional.” The 53-year-old Sandberg also began his coaching career in Chicagos minor league system, working his way up from managing Class A Peoria to Triple-A Iowa over four seasons. But he was passed over twice when the Cubs were looking for a manager, first when Mike Quade was retained by Jim Hendry in 2010 and again when Theo Epstein selected Sveum for the role two years ago. If Sanndberg harbours any ill will over the twin rejections, he showed no signs of it Friday.dddddddddddd. “Im doing what I want to do, so thats the main thing,” said Sandberg, who managed Philadelphias Triple-A team for two seasons before beginning this year as the third base coach and infield instructor under Manuel. “Thats baseball, and moving on was important for me to get back to the major leagues, the way that I looked at it and the way I felt.” Sandberg actually was drafted by Philadelphia and broke into the majors with the Phillies in 1981, playing 13 games in September and October. He got six at-bats during his first stint, but managed to get his first major league hit in a 14-0 loss at the Cubs on Sept. 27. That was it for Sandbergs playing time in Philadelphia, which traded the infielder and Larry Bowa to Chicago for speedy Ivan de Jesus that January. It turned into one of the most lopsided trades in the long history of both franchises. The change of scenery helped Sandberg blossom into one of baseballs best players. He won the NL MVP award in 1984, when he hit .314 with 19 homers and 84 RBIs while powering the Cubs to their first playoff appearance since 1945. He also made the All-Star team for the first time and won his second Gold Glove that year. While the Phillies are still getting to know Sandberg as a manager, his long playing career certainly helps with his credibility in their veteran clubhouse. “When he played, being a middle infielder and the captain of the team, he (was) already a manager,” shortstop Jimmy Rollins said. “He (was) a manager on the field, game situations.” Sandberg said he learned a lot about managing while working in the minors. Structure and organization are important to him, all the way down to his ticket plan for his return to Wrigley — just family, which was up to 15 as of Friday morning, including five grandsons. Going through all those bus rides in the minors while working his way back to the majors as a coach also deepened his appreciation for working in the majors, making his games in Chicago more special. “I take it all in now and relish every moment, so Im looking forward to it,” he said. TORONTO – Jermain Defoe has been where Gilberto is — under the microscope and unable to score goals. Defoe insists its only a matter of time before his Toronto FC strike partner starts finding the net. And hes told Gilberto the same thing several times. “Everyones trying to talk to him, not just me. The manager and everyone. . . all the boys are just trying to be positive,” Defoe said. "Im sure hes experienced enough to know its just a matter of time. Hes been unlucky. “Hopefully when he gets the first one, hell score many more. Still got a long way to go, its a long season.” Toronto FC (4-4-1) hosts the Columbus Crew (4-4-4) at BMO Field on Saturday, a game that coach Ryan Nelsen said, in the event of a victory, could “springboard us forward for the rest of the season” Gilberto was part of Torontos much-celebrated off-season makeover, acquired to boost the clubs underpowered offence. The 24-year-old Brazilian has come oh so close numerous times, banging shots off the post and sending balls just wide of the net. But he remains without a goal in eight Major League Soccer appearances. And with his near-misses comes increasing scrutiny, which Defoe said comes “part and parcel with playing football.” “I suppose at any level really where youve got to perform, people will expect you to perform, and obviously if you dont people are going to ask questions,” Defoe said after Fridays practice at the clubs sun-drenched training grounds just north of the city. “But on the flip side, when youre playing well and youre scoring goals, everyone loves it and you get all the praise. So if its not going well, I suppose you have to just take it on the chin, as they say in England.” Nelsen joked that hes played through goal-scoring droughts that lasted years — he, of course, was a defender. But he believes the scrutiny is a bit unfair. “Strikers, they get referred to as goalscoring, with defenders its conceding, . . sometimes (playing) just feels wrong. And its not just in football, its in your job,” Nelsen told reporters. "You have a couple of months where its just tough, things just dont seem to go your way. Its life. “The only trouble in our job is everybody is watching you when it happens. Everybody talks about it, everybody wants to know about it, everybodys picking your brain about it. You all go through it, sometimes its just more out front, its just right out there in the media.” Gilberto scored 14 goals in 24 games for Portuguesa of Brazils top division last season. He signed with Toronto as a Designated Player in December, and is set to earn US$1.2 million this season — 12th highest in MLS. One TFC official mused before the season kicked off that the Brazilian may score even more goals than Defoe, but the former Tottenham Hotspur striker leads the way with four goals in six games. “I think every striker has been through spells where at some stage in the season you might go a few games without scoring,” Defoe said. "But youve just got to keep working hard and getting into position where youre going to score. Youve got to remain positive and thats all you can do really. “Obviously its difficult because your confidence gets really low. But hes working hard. Im sure its just a matter of time before he scores.” Defoe missed Torontos previous game against Columbus with a hamstring injury — a 2-0 road victory on April 5 that boosted the teams record to 3-1. Both Defoe and Nelsen said they like where the team is positioned right now. Theres a sense that its turned the corner after a disappointing stretch. “Were starting to strengthen ourselves and trust our squad and get a bit hardened,” Nelsen said. "Going to have our ups and downs of course, but were starting to become an MLS squad which is literally competitive in every game. And considering what we inherited here, its a good little evolution. “I know everybody wants to just flip the switch and you go from nobodies to champions overnight and it doesnt happen like that. If you just step back, you can look where we were and look where we are, you kind of see an evolution or developments that other teams — probably because they werent as low as us — are not making. Thats what I like about our team, everybodys just getting a wee bit better, and the squads just getting a wee bit better every day.” Nelsen was happy to have midfielders Jonathan Osorio (hamstring) and Jackson Goncalves (concussion) back practising Friday. The two will be available to play against the Crew. “Im anxious to come back. I hate missing games, obviously. I even hate missing practices,” said the Toronto-born Osorio. “Im more excited that Im healthy, Im feeling good, so Im excited (Saturday) to just play without any worries, without any knocks on me, and to be 100 per cent.” The club will be missing captain and defender Steven Caldwell, who will serve his suspension for a red-card he received in Torontos last league game — a 2-2 draw at Kansas City. Coincidentally, Toronto was also missing Caldwell in last months meeting. “Hopefully we can repeat that (win with him),” Nelsen said. “But I think youve seen in Bradley Orr, and Doneil Henry and Nick Hagglund weve got some pretty decent cover there, so hopefully whoever plays at centre back will be right up for it.” Toronto will also be without recently-acquired midfielder Collen Warner. “His brother is getting married in Denver, and hes the best man,” Nelsen said. “On several levels, us guys may have told him to tell his brother hes making a bad mistake,” Nelsen added, laughing. “(Warner) says hes batting well above his average, so he should do it as soon as he can so. . . To tell you the truth, thats like me exactly.” www.sal…] . The Desert Foxes took part in the 2010 World Cup and failed to advance past the group stage, and the African side figures to have a tough time reaching the last 16 this time around as well. Belgiums last appearance on the big stage was the 2002 tournament when the team reached the second round before bowing out to eventual champions Brazil. salenfl…] . Maria Silvia Bastos Marques, president of the EOM (Municipal Olympic Company), will be leaving her post but will remain as an advisor, a city hall statement said Tuesday.Next up for Michael Phelps comeback: Two events that produced Olympic gold. Phelps has entered the 100-meter butterfly and the 200 freestyle at the Charlotte Grand Prix meet in North Carolina next week, his coach, Bob Bowman, told The Associated Press on Monday night. With both events on May 16, Bowman can stick to the plan of building up Phelps endurance while staying away, at least for now, from the grueling, multi-day programs that were once the norm for Phelps. There will be morning preliminaries and evening finals, though the coach said hes not yet certain Phelps will actually compete in both races. Phelps returned to competitive swimming at a meet in Arizona less than two weeks ago, his first since retiring after the 2012 London Games as the most decorated athlete in Olympic history. He is the three-time defending Olympic champion in the 100 fly, so its obvious that race would be part of any plans to compete at the Rio Games. He won the 200 free at the 2008 Beijing Games — during his record eight-gold performance — but dropped the event in London. Phelps also competed in two events at the Mesa Grand Prix, finishing second to longtime rival Ryan Lochte in the 100 fly and matching the fourth-fastest time in the world this year. The other event, the 50 freestyle, wassnt nearly as serious.dddddddddddd That race has never been part of Phelps program at a major meet, and he even used his preliminary heat to work on his butterfly stroke. Not surprisingly, he finished 42nd overall against swimmers who were using the much faster freestyle. Still, it was a good starting point for what the Phelps camp is describing as a low-key comeback. “We were encouraged by his performances in Mesa and look forward to trying a 200 in Charlotte,” Bowman said in a text message. Phelps has also put his name in for the final Grand Prix meet of the season in Santa Clara, California, next month, though he is taking the comeback one step at a time and not committing to any long-term goals. Still, its clear he wouldnt be putting in the work if the 2016 Olympics were not his primary focus. Phelps has already competed in four Summer Games, winning 18 golds and 22 medals overall. The Grand Prix schedule provides tuneups for the U.S. national championships in August, where spots will be earned for the Pan Pacific Championships later that month and next years world championships in Kazan, Russia — an important steppingstone for the Olympics. After the Charlotte meet, Phelps will head to Colorado for high-altitude training beginning May 27. I first covered the most unsavoury subject on planet futbol in a February 2006 blog, and at the time thought like all other pre-civilized diseases on mother earth the authorities would do all they possible could to ensure it would soon be eradicated. How foolishly wrong I was. Forget the now inherent corruption and back handed favours that plague the beautiful game. Goal Line Technology? Youre having a laugh. As for them penalty cheating bandits, footballs lawmakers upend them by awarding the penalty to the opponent each time a player attempts to con the referee into awarding ghost penalties. This at least ensures Cristiano and Gareth remain upright for the next el clásico. What Josip Simunic did following the final whistle in Zagreb Tuesday night is beyond the pale of rational or reasonable behaviour. This has to finally be the point FIFA and UEFA finally begin to behave in a manner which will ensure the so termed beautiful game is rid of racism. Let there be no doubt, this is hardly an isolated case. Sepp Blatter and Michel Platini need to take a long, hard and very painful look at themselves and their organizations for their inertia, pitiful response and the lenient way they have dealt with offenders. In some cases, repeat offenders. The punishment is not even close to the offense taken and crime committed. Shaking hands doesnt count, Blatter. The effect of leniency has provided the breeding ground which has allowed racism on the terraces and the sacred pitch itself to evolve into a form that is not far removed from becoming structural. Dare I say an accepted practice? My February 2006 blog highlighted the fact a fringe minority of so called Real Zaragoza supporters were repeat offenders for racially abusing Samuel Etoo. Moreover, I was as troubled by the fact when the racism had occurred the previous year the response from the authorities was to fine Zaragoza €600, approximately $1,000. Etoo was so incensed by the events in 2006 to again be the target of this depraved and cowardly behaviour he wanted to send a message he had enough and was willing to walk off the pitch. It took his then coach Frank Rijkaard and some of his Barcelona teammates to convince the Cameroonian to not allow the racists win. Shamefully no one in a position of real authority that particular Zaragoza night decided to act in the required manner and right there in that moment begin the long hard process of finally doing something more meaningful than the lip service of an appeal on the PA system. The referee requested Real Zaragoza make an announcement on the stadium public address system for those guilty to refrain from the racism. Not sure if they used the word please. Obviously 2005s €600 fine to Zaragoza was hardly a deterrent. Or the first time such behaviour had occurred. Merely the first time the authorities felt compelled to be seen to be doing something about it. Plainly, what the Spanish Football Federation did, likely briefing or getting direction from UEFA as they went, sent a clear intention that brushing it under the carpet was all they were willing to do. I cant quite understand why its the club the authorities go after and not the actual cowardly perpetrators themselves. They use their football club as a smokescreen. We could list here all the separate racist incidents that have occurred in European football since 2005 and the word worthless could fit in terms of an adjective for the so called punishments that have been handed out. Excuse me, sanctions. Punishment almost directly infers a crime had previously been committed. The most recent reported case of racism occurred in last months CSKA Moscow v Manchester City Champions League match. Yes, many cases do go unreported and undetected. City captain Yaya Toure was the target on that particular Moscow night. Russian footballs response to this was to accuse the English of a smear campaign, whilst CSKA rolled out the denial campaign. UEFA went away from its fines system and went for the partial stadium closure sanction. Three institutions, three strikes. Shameful. Hows this for flexing your muscles? In UEFAs official statement, they omitted any explicit racist references to what went on that particular night. Wholly unacceptably, UEFAs statement referred to the matter as an incident. The first sentence of the statement reading, “The UEFA Control and Disciplinary Body has handed down sanctions to CSKA Moscow following incidents during their UEFA Champions League home game against Manchester City” An incident? Of what nature exactly. Late in the statement we find out the sanction is partial closure to a section of the stadium where the horrific abuse stemmed from. UEFA couldnt even bring themselves to close the entire stadium, or even for that matter, the South Stand which is the part of the ground the racist cowards like to associate themselves with. Tough guys only need apply. When CSKA and Bayern Munich play their UEFA Champions League group stage match Wednesday, Sector D of the Khimiki Arena will be closed. It was only in the final paragraph of UEFAs statement were they were willing to use the R word. “The fight against racism is a high priority for UEFA. All forms of racist behavior are considered serious offenses against the disciplinary regulations and are punished with the most severe sanctions.” If closing a solitary section for a single Champions League match is UEFAs definition of the most severe sanctions then it is all the proof we need the European Custodian of the worlds game is incapable of correctly policing itself. Hardly surprising, shortly after the match, Yaya Toure began speaking of African players and teams boycotting Russia 2018. Can anyone blame him? Why is it that where yet again society has grotesquely failed people of African origins they themselves feel compelled to take matters into their own hands? I ask FIFA and UEFA; do we need to see rioting on the streets before they recognize that it is they themselves who have a responsibility? They have failed this generation and are indirectly guilty themselves. I think the legal term is by association. Too bad Platini doesnt view racism in football as he does the so called financial doping in the code. When do we see a panel assembled that has the exact same resources and same wide ranging powers as UEFAs Financial Fair Play executive be put in place to finally rid us of racism in European football. Apparently you can no longer invest your own personal fortune to better ensure a winning culture pervades at your football club. But at the same token, sit idly back as your customers racially abuse and in some instances commit crimes on the employees of your rivals. Who invented this system? Didnt John Terry get charged by the London police in regards to the well documented case involving Rio Ferdinands younger brother? Ultimately standing trial shortly after appearing for England at EURO 2012. Why then are the people who claim allegiance to CSKA not feeling the full force of the legal system? Simunic was found guilty by the Zagreb legal system for, Spreading Racial Hatred and was fined a paltry $4,000 by the Prosecutors Office. What message does that send? Someone else willing to invoke 20th century Nazism for a sum of money Gareth Bale roughly receives for every minute he spends on the Santiago Barnebeau pitch. Those multi-national companies, including the recently added Russian energy company Gazprom, who set aside millions of dollars each year to partner up and brand themselves around the pinnacle of club football have a duty and obligation to greater society. Companies are very willing to associate themselves with good causes. There is no greater cause in all of humanity than to foster encouragement in us all to treat one another and each other as our equals. As in the immortal words of singer Timmy Thomas who asked in his 1972 classic, which over the years has gone on to be re-recorded by a variety of musical greats from a variety of different backgrounds: Why Cant We Live Together? LONDON — Crystal Palace has hired former Stoke manager Tony Pulis, hoping he can revive the struggling club and lift it out of last place in the Premier League. The 55-year-old Pulis had been out of work since leaving Stoke last season and will take charge after Saturdays Premier League match against Hull, with caretaker manager Keith Millen remaining in charge for the match against the Tigers. Pulis signed a 2 1/2-year contract and his first match in charge will be against Norwich on Nov. 30. Pulis succeeds Ian Holloway, who left the club last month after a disappointing start to the season following the South Londons club return to the topflight. On Saturday, a photo of him and Gronkowski, surrounded by other partiers, appeared on several social media sites. Later, Manziel posted a photo on his Twitter account of him standing with UFC President Dana White along with a thank-you note. Although this was all done on his free time, and Manziel didnt commit a crime or have any known issues, his actions raised eyebrows in some circles about his commitment to playing in the NFL. He seemed to fire back at any criticism by posting a photo on his Instagram account Monday night of his Browns playbook and iPad with the caption: “Guess its impossible to enjoy the weekend and study?” Manziel, who was selected with the No. 22 overall pick by the Browns after slidingg in the first round, is expected to challenge Brian Hoyer for the starting job.ddddddddddddLast week, first-year Browns coach Mike Pettine said Manziel was having typical problems for a young player. “Its like any other rookie, that hes just inconsistent,” Pettine said. “I think a lot of its the mental part of it. Hes more worried about getting the formation right, making sure the motion is correct, and hes got the cadence. Then, hes got to worry about where guys are. Being good mechanically takes a back seat to learning the system first. I think you see over the maturation process, once all that stuff becomes second nature, that hell be a lot more comfortable.” Manziel has made a favourable impression with the Browns in his first weeks as a pro. Hes said all the right things during two media availabilities, echoing the teams stance that hes only a backup and will have to earn his starting job. Pettine also said Manziel has shown humility, fitting in nicely with some teammate who may have expected Johnny Football to act differently. “Hes quiet actually,” Pettine said. “Hes a good guy to be around. I think the guys in the locker room will be able to tell you that hes a fun guy. But you can tell, when its time to work he works, and hes very serious about this. You can tell hes very competitive.” Clevelands practice Wednesday is open to the media. Following a big win over the Leafs in Toronto on Saturday night, the Canadiens face the red-hot Bruins in Boston tonight, and will turn to Peter Budaj in goal. Budaj is 4-2-0 in his career against the Bruins, and while he struggled in his last few starts filling in for Carey Price, he earned a 4-1 win in Boston on January 30th, when he made 34 stops. The Canadiens face the Sabres in Montreal tomorrow night in a back to back scenario that would most likely see Price back in goal. Meanwhile, Lars Eller will be a game time decision. He left Saturdays game early with a lower body injury, but appeared to be okay during the morning skate, and will centre the fourth line between Travis Moen and Dale Weise if hes good to go. No other line-up changes are expected. The Bruins are riding a 12 game win streak, their longest since they won 13 in a row from February 23 to March 20, 1971. MINNEAPOLIS – The Minnesota Timberwolves say centre Ronny Turiaf is out indefinitely with a bruised right knee. The team says Turiaf had an exam Thursday that revealed the bone bruise. He was hurt in the fourth quarter of the Timberwolves 104-91 win over Indiana on Wednesday night. The 6-foot-10 centre has been starting in place of Nikola Pekovic, who is out with bursitis in his right ankle. Turiaf appeared in 23 games, 10 starts, for the Wolves this year. He averaged 4.1 points, 5.7 rebounds and 1.7 blocks in 20.9 minutes per game. http://…] . – Hall of Fame centre Bill Russell was arrested this week at Seattle-Tacoma International Airport after Transportation Security Administration officials found a loaded gun in his luggage. www.sal…] .J. — Before his team took the ice to face the Pittsburgh Penguins Saturday, New Jersey Devils forward Ilya Kovalchuk spoke to head coach Peter DeBoer about the possibility of taking a penalty shot. http://www.salenfljerseyswholesale.com/. Police leaflets seen by an Associated Press reporter at a central Sochi hotel on Tuesday contain warnings about three potential suicide bombers. A police letter said that one of them, Ruzanna Ibragimova, a 22-year-old widow of an Islamic militant, was at large in Sochi. The Los Angeles Kings took advantage of their breaks in Game Three and goaltender Jonathan Quick was terrific, stopping all 32 shots he faced, as the Kings downed the Rangers 3-0 to take a 3-0 stranglehold in the series. Game Three opened with a brilliant pace, as the Rangers and Kings played a back-and-forth first period with very few whistles. It looked like it was going to end up scoreless through one when Kings C Jeff Carter buried a 2-on-1 with Justin Williams, his wrist shot deflecting in off a sliding Dan Girardi with 0.7 seconds remaining in the first period. A backbreaking goal for a Rangers team already down two games in the series. With Rangers D Marc Staal in the penalty box, for high-sticking, Kings D Jake Muzzin scored a power play goal early in the second period to create some breathing room. Muzzins goal was on the power play, but was a wrist shot from just inside the blueline that deflected in off Rangers RW Martin St. Louis. Two goals on two attempted blocked shots and this left the Rangers, down a couple of goals, to press. Late in the second period, Kings C Mike Richards broke out on a 2-on-1 with RW Trevor Lewis, and after Rangers D Ryan McDonagh blocked Richards attempted pass, Richards found the puck back on his stick and finished it off to give the Kings a 3-0 lead. The proverbial dagger. The Rangers had many chances — they outshot the Kings 17-8 in the second period, then 11-2 in the third, once the deficit was virtually insurmountable — but they couldnt get the puck past Quick. His 32-save shutout was his best of a postseason that hasnt been Quicks best. Even with the Game Three shutout, Quick has a .910 save percentage in 24 games, but the Rangers best chance to pull off an upset in the series was going to be if Henrik Lundqvist outdueled Quick and that hasnt happened. In Game Three, the Kings won while registering a season-low 15 shots on goal. The playoff scoring race didnt see any change at the top, or at least similar change as Anze Kopitar, Jeff Carter, Justin Williams and Marian Gaborik each had a single point.dddddddddddd Kopitar leads the postseason with 26 points, two ahead of Carter and Williams, five ahead of Gaborik. Williams, making his late charge for the Conn Smythe, had six points (1 G, 5 A) in the series. There may not have been a better example of the Rangers frustration in Game Three than to see RW Rick Nash, who has just three goals in the playoffs, creating chances — he had a game-high seven shot attempts — but coming up empty at every turn. In one second period sequence, Nash attacked on the rush, was stopped by Quick, stayed on the puck, gathered control behind the Kings net and as he attempted a wrap-around, was hooked by Kings D Drew Doughty to prevent the goal. It was a smart play by Doughty in the moment and, given the Rangers power play struggles (2-for-30, 6.7% in the past seven games), it was sensible, even in desperation. Game Three was a fine example of why a team like the Rangers, the underdog coming in, couldnt afford to lose a pair of overtime games. Sure, the Rangers could have easily won one of the first two games in Los Angeles and come home even, but they didnt. Then, they had a game in which the bounces totally went in the Kings direction and, just like that, the series is 3-0 and that should be just about that. In 26 previous Stanley Cup Final series in which a team has taken a 3-0 lead, only the 1942 Toronto Maple Leafs managed to overcome the deficit. Thats what the Rangers are left with. Long, virtually impossible odds, in a series that (aside from the third period of Game One) they have played relatively even throughout. Maybe the Rangers deserved a better fate, but they are left needing a miracle and its pretty tough to count on miracles when the other guys are getting the bounces. CALGARY – The Calgary Flames were sellers heading into Wednesdays NHL trade deadline, but buyers had yet to open their wallets a day out. The showiest items on Calgarys lot were forwards Mike Cammalleri and Lee Stempniak. Both will be unrestricted free agents this summer. Interim general manager Brian Burkes theory for slow business was shoppers were temporarily preoccupied elsewhere. Other forwards said to be on the market were New York Rangers captain Ryan Callahan, Vancouver Canucks forward Ryan Kesler, Matt Moulson of the Buffalo Sabres, Ales Hemsky of the Edmonton Oilers and Thomas Vanek of the Buffalo Sabres. “I think theres a logjam thats been presented or created by two, three, four players thats going to paralyze the rest of the league,” Burke told reporters Tuesday at Scotiabank Saddledome. "Youll see other deals happening but I think the hold up for a high-end forward has kind been captivated by two, three, four players. "I think were on the backburner for a lot of teams right now. Doesnt mean nothing is going to happen, but thats where we are today. “Weve been in discussions with every team in the league and what theyre trying to do. We have some unrestricted free agents we will move if the price is right. Im not close on anything that makes sense for us.” Trade speculation in Calgary has centred on Cammalleri, but with a record of 23-31-7 and destined for a fifth straight season out of the playoffs, the only Flames that Burke considered off limits were captain Mark Giordano and rookie sensation Sean Monahan. “When youre in the place we are in the standings, your list of untouchables should be either nonexistent or tiny,” Burke said. Burke, the Flames president of hockey operations, stepped in as interim GM when he fired Jay Feaster on Dec. 12. He intends to hire a new GM. But Burkes mandate is to speed up Calgarys rebuild by whatever means necessary: trades, spending to the cap or the signing of free agents. “You cant be waiting for the next guy,” Burke said. "Were going to do what we can to improve. If that means theres a few less decisions for the new guy, thats fine. “The dynamic of the trade deadline is, you want to show your players first and foremost, if youre close, you want the room to feel youve done something to add. You want the players to believe management is trying to make the team better.” Only the Buffalo Sabres have scored fewer goals than Calgary in the NHL this season, but upgrades are needed both up front and on the blue-line. Cammalleri, 31, scored 39 goals and had 43 assists as a Flame and a linemate of Jarome Iginla in 2008-09. Cammalleri is in the final year of a five-year contract paying him $6 million annually. With the right linemates, Cammalleris offensive skills and experience make him an attractive rental for a playoff push. “Things change very quickly in the business,” Cammalleri said. "When it comes to that, I think you understand why certain things take place and why they might be thinking along certain lines. “I feel my best hockey is ahead of me and I feel great about my game. Whether its here, or whatever happens, Im not concerned about my ability to help my team out.” Stempniak, also 31, is in the second year of a two-year deal that counts $2.5 million against the salary cap. He has eight goals and 15 assists in 52 games this season. His wife gave birth to twin girls following the Olympic break and he could be on the move Wednesday. “I know thats a very likely possibility and have sort of braced myself for that,” Stempniak said. "Ill either get a phone call or I wont get a phone call. “It could be two big life changes in the span of five days, but its part of the business. Thankfully on the family front, everything is going well there and everyone is healthy. Thats the most important thing. Whatever else happens, you think you can deal with it.” Defenceman Chris Butler, whose salary is $1.7 million this season, is also scheduled for unrestricted free agency in July. Burke said he prefers adding a player who can upgrade the Flames immediately over acquiring draft picks. Calgary has a healthy dose of cap space to take on unwanted contracts as part of a deal as well. “I hope to be up here in a year talking about buying players, not selling players. Were selling,” Burke said. "That being said, if we can salvage a hockey deal out of this were going to do that. “If we can turn our cap space into assets were going to do that. It could be a very important day for the franchise, the next 24 hours, but its not the same as when youre adding to try to make a push.” The Flames host the Ottawa Senators on Wednesday. Coach Bob Hartley said Joni Ortio will get the start in net. Ortio was called up from Abbotsford, B.C., when goaltender Karri Ramo injured his knee Feb. 2. Ramo skated Tuesday for the first time since the injury prior to Calgarys optional skate. The league announced the decision on its website Saturday, shortly before AC Milan was due to kick off against Genoa at 6 p.m. local time. The 25-year-old Morosini died about an hour earlier after suffering cardiac arrest during his teams Serie B match at Pescara. Zapatillas Nike Air Max Baratas Hombre . The Kings have gone 6-0-3 over their last nine games despite having been held to three goals or fewer in eight of 10 contests this month. Los Angeles has failed to score more than two goals six times in that span.WALTHAM, Mass. — Rajon Rondos rehab continues. And now it will take place in live NBA games. The Boston Celtics point guard, who has not played since tearing his anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee last Jan. 25, is scheduled to return on Friday night. Coach Brad Stevens and general manager Danny Ainge both said Rondo would return for the game against the Los Angeles Lakers “barring any setbacks.” “I dont think we can expect him to be the Game 7 Rajon Rondo tomorrow,” Stevens said before practice on Thursday. “This is part of the process to getting back to full-go.” Rondo did not speak with reporters on Thursday, but he worked out with his teammates at the teams practice facility. Stevens said Rondo will probably play 18-20 minutes at first, and Ainge said he would probably be limited to five minutes per quarter. “He is our starting point guard,” Stevens said. “We want to figure out the right minutes for him so he doesnt get too stiff on the bench.” Said Ainge: “And, knowing Rondo, hes going to be complaining about that and probably checking himself back into the game. Thats who he is.” Ainge said he wasnt sure what to expect, especially since the ACL injury tends to leave players tentative about making quick moves. “He hasnt played for a year,” Ainge said. “What Ive seen is the ACL injury is something that every player has to overcome, coming back mentally, not just physically.” On Wednesday, Rondo scrimmaged at the practice facility for about an hour with the Celtics NBA Development League affiliate, the Maine Red Claws; afterward, he took the minor leaguers out to dinner.dddddddddddd “I think the guys had a fun time also,” Ainge said. Rondo had developed into one of the top point guards in the NBA, averaging career-highs of 13.7 points and 5.6 rebounds to go with his 11.1 assists per game in 2012-13 before he was hurt. He played almost 45 minutes and recorded a triple-double in a double-overtime loss to Atlanta on Jan. 25, then was diagnosed with a torn ACL two days later. Ainge said he expected to see that player again. “I think he will get there. I dont know how long it will take,” he said. “He has to get back on the court and try it. Now is as good a time as any.” The Celtics could use the boost. They lost nine consecutive games before beating Toronto on Wednesday night, falling into fourth place in the woeful Atlantic Division. Stevens, in his first year with the team after leaving Butler, said he is glad he will finally have his point guard on the floor. “Theres all kinds of thoughts going through my mind right now,” he said, noting that the pre-injury Rondo was a savvy floor leader who could see things on the court and get the ball to places that only a few others can. Ideally, that will return quickly. “The one thing he could do, even when he wasnt playing, was think,” Stevens said. SUNRISE, Fla. — Brad Boyes return to the lineup proved timely for the Florida Panthers. Boyes scored the winning goal in a shootout to lift the Panthers over the Detroit Red Wings 3-2 on Tuesday night. Aleksander Barkov also scored in the tiebreaker for Florida, which has won three of four overall and two in a row against the Red Wings. Boyes is 4 of 5 in shootouts this season and has 35 career shootout goals, the most among active players. He returned to the lineup after being a healthy scratch Sunday in a 6-2 loss at Chicago. “Its a good win. Its good to contribute, whichever way I can,” Boyes said. “If shootout is the way to do it, Im happy with that.” Tomas Tatar scored for Detroit in the shootout but Tim Thomas stopped shots by Daniel Alfredsson and Gustav Nyquist. Nick Bjugstad and Sean Bergenheim had the goals in regulation for Florida. Thomas made 24 saves. The Panthers also won 2-1 on Saturday in Detroit. “Beating them twice in a short period is pretty nice,” Bjugstad said. “Theyve got a lot of good players, a lot of experienced players. So I think it says a lot about the guys in the locker room.” Pavel Datsyuk and Todd Bertuzzi scored for the Red Wings. Jimmy Howard made 25 saves and Johan Franzen had two assists. Detroit lost for the sixth time this season when leading after two periods. The Red Wings are 0-5 in shootouts. “I tried some different guys. We didnt get it done,” coach Mike Babcock said. “We got one point, we wanted two; we came up one short.” Florida scored twice in the third to tie the game. Bjugstad evened it at 2 when he put the puck over Howards shoulder with 5:22 left in regulation. The Panthers cut it to 2-1 on a goal by Bergenheim exactly 5 minutes into the period. Dmitry Kulikov bounced a shot from the point that Bergenheim touched on the way to the net. “All it comes down to is, we needed to go in the third period and score early, get the momentum,” Panthers coach Peter Horachek said. “Its about winning 60 minutes, its not about winning the first or the second.” The Red Wings took a 2-0 lead in the second on Datsyuks goal. Franzen slid a soft pass to Datsyuk to the left of the crease and he one-timed it into the net at 6:47. Franzen has 12 points in his last 10 games. Datsyuk returned to the lineup after missing seven games with a concussion sustained Nov. 23 against Ottawa. He has six goals and nine assists in 11 career games against the Panthers. “Youre up two goals on the road, youre in a good situation, and being up two, after two, we would have taken that,” Howard said. “But weve got to either find a way to score the next one or have the ability to shut them down.” The Red Wings went ahead 1-0 on a power-play goal by Bertuzzi in the first. Franzens shot from the left point was tipped by Datsyuk and blocked by Thomas before Bertuzzi poked in the rebound at 10:26. The Red Wings had a goal disallowed early in the first due to goaltender interference. Jonathan Ericssons slap shot from the left point found the corner of the net, but it was ruled that Daniel Cleary interfered. “That was a big win. Down 2-0 going into the third period, to come back like that, its a great thing,” Thomas said. NOTES: Red Wings C Stephen Weiss returned to Florida for the first time since he signed a five-year deal with Detroit in July. Weiss spent 11 years with the Panthers from 2002-2013. She can barely express what a breakthrough win on the LPGA Tour might bring.BALTIMORE — With several players hampered by injuries, Steve Clevenger became the latest Orioles role player to get a big hit. Clevenger, who is in the lineup while starting catcher Matt Wieters recovers from elbow soreness, hit an RBI double in the 10th inning to extend the Orioles winning streak to five games with a 5-4 victory over the Houston Astros on Saturday night. “Its big, just for the team,” Clevenger said. “We were on a four-game win streak, now five. Were never going to give up until the last out and we proved that tonight.” J.J. Hardy had an infield single with one out in the 10th before Clevenger hit a double down the right field line off Paul Clemens (0-1). “I was just battling,” Clemens said. “I couldnt come in with my fastball at all so thats bad. I was really looking to get comfortable out there. We didnt go to off-speed soon enough. I just kept missing with my fastballs and paid for it. I feel responsible. This is a ball game we should win.” The Astros have lost seven of their past eight games. Houstons Jose Altuve hit a two-out, two RBI single in the ninth inning off Baltimore closer Tommy Hunter that gave the Astros a 4-3 lead. However, after a 55-minute rain delay, Astros right-hander Anthony Bass loaded the bases with two outs on two singles and a walk before pinch hitter Delmon Young tied the game with an infield single. “I didnt let them on,” Hunter said. “I didnt want them to get on. I actually tried to get them out. They got a couple hits. They got me tonight. Im probably going to come back out and give them hell tomorrow. Thats the only thing I can do.” Ryan Webb (2-0) pitched a scoreless 10th for Baltimore. After Nelson Cruz gave the Orioles a 3-2 lead with his 10th home run of the season in the eighth, Hunter entered and allowed a single and double with one out before getting Jonathan Villar to ground into a fielders choice preventing a run from scoring. However, Altuve delivered a sharp single to centre to give the Astros the lead. Astros right-hander Collin McHugh allowed two runs and seven hits with four strikeouts and two walks over 6 1-3 innings. After allowing just one run in his opening two starts of the season, McHugh allowed five runs in just four innings May 4 against Seattle. “Collin did a tremendous job,” Astros manager Bo Porter said. “He pitched well. He had a sharp breaking ball working. He did a good job of pitching thhe ball to the inner third of the plate.dddddddddddd He put us in position to win the game.” After losing his previous two starts, Baltimore right-hander Miguel Gonzalez allowed two runs and six hits with six strikeouts and two walks over a season-high seven innings. The Orioles Adam Jones hit his fourth home run and Nick Markakis went 2 for 5 and extended his hit streak to 17 games, the longest active in the majors. George Springer went 2 for 4 for Houston and hit his second career home run after getting his first Thursday against Detroit. With the Orioles trailing 2-1 in the seventh, Hardy led off with a single and then Clevenger also reached when McHugh fell while trying to handle a dribbler. After Steve Pearce singled to load the bases, McHugh allowed the tying run on a wild pitch. The Orioles could not take the lead despite having runners on second and third with no outs as McHugh and left-hander Tony Sipp got groundouts before Josh Zeid struck out Manny Machado to end the threat. The Orioles improved to 17-0 when leading after eight innings. The Astros took a 1-0 lead in the second when Springer homered to left off Gonzalez with two outs. Houston increased the margin to 2-0 the next inning when Villar singled to centre and then took second when Jones bobbled the ball. Villar stole third and scored on a single by Dexter Fowler. McHugh was cruising and retired eight consecutive batters before allowing a walk to Pearce in the fifth. Jones homered in the sixth to pull the Orioles to within 2-1. It was the first Orioles hit since Clevenger singled in the second. NOTES: Houston manager Bo Porter lost a challenge in the seventh when Dexter Fowler was out on a close play at first base. It took 1 minute, 16 seconds to confirm the ruling on the field. … Orioles first baseman Chris Davis (strained left oblique) played nine innings and went 1 for 4 in a rehab assignment at Double-A Bowie. He will be evaluated Sunday when he is scheduled to come off the disabled list. … There is no timetable for Orioles catcher Matt Wieters (sore right elbow) to begin throwing. Wieters served as the designated hitter for the past three games. … Astros catcher Jason Castro was back in the lineup Saturday after missing the previous game because of a left forearm bruise. … Houston reliever Matt Albers (right shoulder tendinitis) is eligible to come off the disabled list, Porter said the team will give him a few more days to rest. DETROIT – Thanks to the Tigers 7-3 victory in Game 4, this series is guaranteed to return to Fenway Park on Saturday night. As each game passes (each has played close with the exception of last night) it becomes clearer just how evenly matched these two teams are and how one mistake, or one bad inning, is likely to sway the result. While much has been made of Jim Leylands decision to demote Austin Jackson from the lead off spot – Jackson had two hits and a walk hitting eighth in Game 4 – the fact that Red Sox starter Jake Peavy lost the strike zone in the second inning, when the Tigers scored five runs to ice the game early, was the biggest factor of the night. As the curtain closes on the Comerica Park portion of this series, we revert back to the Game 1 pitching matchup. Jhonny Peralta, who had three hits in Game 1 and was the only Tiger with a multi-hit game, went 2-3 off Lester with a double and an RBI single. That single, in the sixth inning, scored Miguel Cabrera with the only run of the game in Detroits 1-0 win. Possible Argument: Despite the fact his counterpart Anibal Sanchez didnt allow a hit over six innings in Game 1, Lester was essentially as good as his mound opponent. Lester worked out of a two out, first inning jam stranding runners at the corners following two singles. A one out single in the third was erased on a double play and, thanks to some strong defensive play, he worked out of a fifth inning jam started by a lead off double. Sure, Lester got burned in the sixth but he was generally efficient in Game 1 and theres no reason to believe he cant be Sanchezs match, or better, in Game 5. Tigers: RHP Anibal Sanchez (Regular season: 14-9, 3.67, 1.308 WHIP; Playoffs: 0-0, 4.50, 1.333 WHIP in 6IP) Didnt face Boston in the 2013 regular season. Game 1 vs. Boston: 6 IP, 0 R, 0 H, 6 BB, 12 K, 1.000 WHIP. Clearly nobody hit Sanchez well in Game 1 because nobody hit him at all. Dustin Pedroia did draw two of Sanchezs six walks. Multiple-time Sanchez strikeout victims included: Jacoby Ellsbury, Shane Victorino, David Ortiz, Mike Napoli, Daniel Nava, and Stephen Drew. It would have been quicker to jot down who didnt strikeout at least twice versus Sanchez. Interesting Note: The Tigers pitching staff has combined for at least 10 strikeouts in each game of this series. LINEUP CONSIDERATIONS: Its hard to imagine Leyland going away from what worked in Game 4 so expect to see Torii Hunter back in the lead off spot, Miguel Cabrera batting second, Prince Fielder hitting third and Austin Jackson much further down in the order. “I was laying on my couch at home (Tuesday) night watching the Dodgers and the Cardinals, and I kept thinking, because I didnt disagree with anybody saying we needed something,” said Leyland of his lineup tinkering. “I felt like fans, members of the media, myself, probably the players, if the truth be known, I think something had to be done. “I dont want to say this had anything to do with it. Jackson went 2-2 with two walks in the eight-hole in Game 4. Entering the game, hed been 3-33 (.091) with 18 strikeouts in the postseason. Red Sox manager John Farrell is getting next to no production from the left side of his infield. Shortstop Stephen Drew is 3-28 (.107) in the postseason. Third baseman Will Middlebrooks is 4-23 (.174.) On the possibility of replacing Middlebrooks with rookie Xander Bogaerts in Game 5, Farrell offered this: “Havent made a decision on (Thursdays) lineup but given the way the left side of the infield, were struggling a little bit to get production out of that side. So its something thats being considered for sure.” Game 5 Prediction: Im one-for-four picking the correct winner of each game so this has become, effectively, a pointless exercise. To the point, in fact, where I feel I should be apologizing to the team I pick to win. Nonetheless, a commitment was made in Game 1 to make a prediction for each game and Im going to see it through. At the heart of this series is starting pitching and Detroits has been better than Bostons. Sanchez runs up his pitch count striking out the Red Sox and doesnt go beyond seven innings. Lester is equal to the task and this game is decided by the bullpens. So, I pick Boston to win this game 4-3. CHICAGO — Jonathan Toews and rookie Brandon Pirri scored in a four-round shootout, and the Chicago Blackhawks beat the Phoenix Coyotes 5-4 on Thursday night for their fourth straight win. Radim Vrbata had the lone shootout goal for Phoenix, 7-1-1 in its last nine games. Pirri tied the score 4-all 3 minutes into the third, and 4 seconds after a Chicago power play had elapsed. He connected on a midair deflection of Brent Seabrooks drive from the top of the circle. Brandon Saad, Patrick Sharp and Marian Hossa also scored in regulation for the Blackhawks, who extended their point streak to eight games (7-0-1). Chicago fired a season-high 52 shots through overtime at Coyotes goalie Mike Smith. Phoenix defenceman Michael Stone scored two goals for the first time in his career as the Coyotes overcame an early two-goal deficit to earn a point. Shane Doan and Lauri Korpikoski also scored for Phoenix. At 13-4-3, the Coyotes are off to their best start since 1998-99 when they were 15-3-2 after 20 games. Smith made 48 saves and Chicagos Corey Crawford had 26 in a wide-open, back-and-forth game. The 52 shots allowed by the Coyotes through overtime also were a season high. Smith entered having faced an NHL-high 555 shots. Phoenix defenceman Zbynek Michalek left after five shifts in the first period with a lower-body injury. The Blackhawks jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the opening 6:22, but the Coyotes came back to tie it 2-all after the first period. Saad opened the scoring 2:37 in when he popped in a rebound with Smith down on the ice and a scrum in the crease. Sharp made it 2-0 at 6:22 with a power-play goal, on a rising shot fired from the top of the slot and through a screen. The 23-year-old Stone cut it to 2-1 just 41 seconds later when his shot from the right point deflected off Pirris stick and past Crawford. Doans power-play goal, chipped in from the right side of the net with 5:56 left in the first, tied it at 2. Keith Yandles shot from the point missed the net, caromed off the back boards and straight to Doan. Hossa put Chicago back ahead 3-2 at 5:05 of the second when he drove to the net unchecked and scored on a rebound of his own shot from left wing. Then Korpikoski and Stone scored 2:11 apart late in the second to put Phoenix ahead for the first time, 4-3. From the edge of the crease, Korpikoski wrapped in a rebound of Radim Vrbatas shot with 5:05 left in the period to knot it at 3. Stones second goal, on a high drive from the top of the left circle, sailed past Crawford on the stick side and put the Coyotes in front. After Pirri scored to tie it at 4, the Blackhawks took control and outshot the Coyotes 17-6 in the third. Smith stopped Hossa from point-blank range with a minute left in regulation. Chicago dominated the overtime and outshot Phoenix 3-0 NOTES: The Blackhawks recalled 20-year-old forward Alex Broadhurst from Rockford of the AHL and placed C Michael Handzus on injured reserve retroactive to Oct. 25. Handzus has missed the last eight games with an upper-body injury. Broadhurst, from the Chicago suburb of New Lenox, Ill., didnt play Thursday. … Chicago D Michal Rozsival was a scratch. He was hit in the face with a puck on Sunday. … Phoenix assigned forward Chris Brown to Portland of the American Hockey League. He had appeared in just four games. wholesale jerseys . At the moment, neither do the decision-makers. Dustin McGowan is front-and-centre in this ongoing saga, having thrust himself into the conversation with a dominating three-inning performance against the Phillies on Thursday, just hours after manager John Gibbons appeared to pour cold water on the notion. wholesale nfl jerseys . Sabathia did not get a decision on Monday against Tampa Bay, as he allowed three runs and eight hits in seven innings. Hes 13-4 on the year to go along with a 3.42 ERA. Since winning six decisions over a nine-start stretch, Sabathia is 0-1 over his last two outings, but still has only allowed more than three runs once in his previous 10 trips to the hill. http://www.cheapjerseyssafe.com/. The incident happened during Barcelonas 3-2 win at Villarreal on April 27th when Alves, who is black, picked up the banana thrown by 26-year-old David Campayo Lleo, bit off a piece and then discarded it. Japans Sho Endo (25.24) placed third.MONTREAL – One by one did they file off the ice at the Bell Centre as Max Pacioretty and the Montreal Canadiens celebrated victory just steps away from the since-vacated crease of Jonathan Bernier. The good saw the Maple Leafs pick up at least a point for the 14th time in the past 16 games (11-2-3), the bad saw opportunity to draw even with a division rival foiled on yet another blown third period lead. Rather than depart the grand old city of Montreal with a share of second place in the Atlantic division, Toronto heads home three points back of their Original-Six rival with an eye on what went well and what mightve been. “Were disappointed to not get the other one,” said Dion Phaneuf of the point lost in overtime. “But we did a lot of good things.” The effort was vastly improved from a post-Olympic dud in Long Island two nights earlier, one that saw them dribble away a pair of third period leads before falling in the extra frame to a struggling Islanders squad. It didnt start well. Montreal scored twice on this night before the Leafs had even managed a shot on goal in what was a sluggish opening frame for both teams. But from there, the visitors gradually wrestled some control of the hockey game, scoring three unanswered, all from the scorching duo of James van Riemsdyk and Phil Kessel. Kessel broke a 2-2 tie with his 33rd of the year – the second of two in a span of just over two minutes – dancing around Pacioretty just outside the Montreal blue-line before beating Peter Budaj with a laser far-side. “We came back from it,” said head coach Randy Carlyle of the early deficit. “We found ways to create offence and I thought we had a majority of the puck time probably from the second period on so there were a lot of positives in the game.” Just as they failed to do against the Islanders, the Leafs could not hold a third period lead, this one of increased importance opposite a foe just steps ahead in the playoff race. Tim Gleason took the first of three consecutive (and certainly contested) Toronto penalties, whistled for interference on Brian Gionta along the wall in the defensive zone. The maneuver (one that drew ire from Carlyle) proved costly as P.K. Subban fired a one-time blast short-side beyond Bernier, evening the score at three. “We had a one-goal lead and we took three straight penalties,” said Carlyle afterward. “Now we can challenge the validity of the penalties one way or another, but we took three straight penalties.” The last of which was just as unlikely as the two that preceded it. Racing out of his crease to protect a puck that was up for grabs, Bernier was dealt a delay of game offence, the second of two such penalties for the Leafs in overtime. After wiping out the first to Kessel, the Toronto penalty kill could not ultimately hold the fort, surrendering a second power-play goal to the Canadiens. Subban loaded up in this instance for another one-time blast, only his stick shattered, the puck squirting to Andrei Markov and eventually Pacioretty in the slot for the overtime winner. It was the summation of a brief, two-game road trip that could have and (probably should have considering the circumstance) yielded a full four points, valuable points lost in an ever-tightening playoff race. And so while they could point to the good of the evening, there was certainly an undercurrent of what was actually lost and that was an opportunity to catch the Habs. “We turned the tide of the hockey game in our favour for the majority of it and were going to take the positives out of it and move on,” said Carlyle. “Were .500 on the road (trip) which in this situation isnt great – wed like to have won both hockey games in our minds, but this is the way it goes.” Five Points 1. Dynamic Duo They sizzled before the Olympics, during the Olympics and now after the Olympics. Kessel, who had a goal and an assist for the third straight game, continues to boil at a heat hes never before attained in the NHL. The 26-year-old now has 13 goals and 31 points in the past 17 games and 17 points in the past nine games alone. “Ive said it for quite a few years now that Ive played with him, I think hes one of the top players in the National Hockey League,” said Phaneuf. “Hes proving it year and year again that hes extremely skilled (and) he can put the puck in the net with the best of the goal-scorers in the NHL. I think that hes having a tremendous year and hes a huge part of our team and why weve had success.” Tied for the Olympic lead in scoring and now with 69 points this season, Kessel is alone in second place to Sidney Crosby in the scoring race. He is four goals from matching a soon-to-be broken career-high of 37. James van Riemsdyk meanwhile continues to fly himself. The 24-year-old, who matched a career-high with three assists in Long Island and finished third in Olympic scoring, scored twice against Montreal. His first of the night and second shorthanded marker this season was a thing of beauty. Racing past Subban on a failed Markov feed, he burst in alone on Budaj, tucking a nifty backhand through the five-hole. “At first I wasnt even sure if I was going to even go for it, but I realized that they looked pretty tired and just kind of took off and went from there,” he said. Totaling 52 points on the year, van Riemsdyk is up to 24th in the scoring race. 2. Officiating Concerns Carlyle didnt hide his displeasure with the officials after the Pacioretty goal, barking at them as he left the ice in defeat. What stuck most in his craw was the call on Gleason which preceded Subbans game-tying goal. The 31-year-old Gleason stepped in the way of Gionta just ahead of the puck and was hauled off for it. “I was under the impression that if it was one one-thousand yoou could take the players body if the player tries to make a play on it,” Carlyle said.dddddddddddd “I just said how do you call that in a 3-2 game and I figured I really didnt even hit him, I just kind of one-armed (him),” said Gleason of his conversation with the officials afterward, not having seen the replay himself. Further concerns were raised when Kessel was called for delay of game in the final moments of regulation. He attempted to ring a puck off the glass – and did in the minds of his teammates – but was called for the penalty anyway. “Maybe youd like to see that video review for that because you cant get that wrong at that time of the game,” said van Riemsdyk. “Its definitely a tough one. Couple other ones that were a little debatable.” The last in dispute saw Bernier jump out of his crease in overtime, snatching hold of a loose puck from Daniel Briere and freezing play. “I havent been called for that ever I guess,” said the 25-year-old. “I dont even know whats the rule, how far you can actually get it and freeze it.” The rule in this case is clear (63.2). “If the goalkeeper races out of his crease in an attempt to beat the attacking player to the puck and instead of playing the puck jumps on the puck causing a stoppage of play, this shall be a minor penalty for delay of game.” 3. Slight Dip Jonathan Bernier entered the Olympic break on a roll, winning five of his last six starts while stopping 105 of the final 109 shots he faced. But in two starts post-Olympics he has looked rather ordinary, yielding five goals to the Islanders on Thursday (without much help) and four more to his hometown Canadiens on Saturday. “I thought it was actually a tough game for me,” he said of a rare night with fewer than 30 shots against, Montreal mustering just 29. “They had a lot of bodies in front of me. They were hitting me quite a bit. It was a tough game. And thats one thing that when youre away from the game thats the hard part for a goalie is to find that seam and find that puck through traffic.” Never in his NHL career has Bernier played as much as he has this season for the Leafs, starting his 40th game on Saturday. His performance as the no. 1 down the stretch under such strain will certainly be worth monitoring and key for a club that has relied on great goaltending from the Laval, Quebec native on many a nights. 4. Bollands Mountain Climb Dave Bolland missed his 47th game Saturday because of a once-severed and now healing tendon in his left ankle. The four-month recovery process has been taxing on the 27-year-old, who is close to a return, but not quite there yet. “Its sort of a slow mountain climb for me this whole rehab,” said Bolland. “Its been painful and slow and grueling. Im ready to get back on the ice as soon as possible.” Bolland is listed as day-to-day and according to head coach, Randy Carlyle, is at the stage where he, the player, will decide when exactly he is ready to return. For the Mimico native, who played in 15 games for the Leafs in October, its about being up to speed with the fundamentals, areas such as being strong in the corners and fully able to handle defensive responsibilities at full speed. “I dont want to be a liability out there when transition comes around and Im the one thats last getting back and I cant back-check because of my ankle,” he said. “I want to be sure that when Im out there Im going at a 100 per cent and Im ready to play.” He doesnt appear to be at that point yet, even suffering a setback in practice earlier in the week. “Thats just the way these injuries heal,” Carlyle said. "Its a severe injury to a vital part in his body, specifically a tendon in his foot. When you put a skate on it, theres a lot more complications than just you and I walking around. Hes putting skates on and putting a lot of pressure in that area. “Basically its up to him. Hes got to be the guy that tells us hes ready to go.” 5. Hollands Lace-Bite It was the final game of January and Peter Holland played 11 minutes in a 6-3 win over Florida. He was in pain the whole night, but didnt think much of it. “I went to sleep and woke up in the morning and could hardly put any weight on it,” Holland said of his foot. The 23-year-old had suffered from lace bite before (which causes pain from skates being too tight) but nothing quite like this. “It was just released as lace-bite but it ended up getting pretty badly infected,” said Holland, recalled by the Leafs for Saturdays game against the Canadiens. “I was in the hospital for four or five days with an IV in my arm trying to look after it. It was pretty painful for a while there. I was on crutches (and) in a walking boot and couldnt put too much weight on it.” Holland missed four games with the injury before being assigned to the Toronto Marlies for two games. He played just under 12 minutes against Montreal, centering a line with Mason Raymond and Nik Kulemin. Stats-Pack 31 – Points for Phil Kessel in the past 17 games. 14-14 – Goal differential between the Leafs and Canadiens this season. 30:34 – Ice-time for Dion Phaneuf on Saturday, a season-high. 13-6-3 – Toronto record versus the Atlantic division. 11-2-3 – Record the past 16 games. 11 – Goals in the past 17 games for James van Riemsdyk, who has a career-high of 26 so far this season. Special Teams Capsule PP: 0-3Season: 21.4% (4th) PK: 3-5Season: 77.5% (28th) Quote of the Night “Weve had lots of those lessons. The teachers tired sometimes of bringing the same lesson.” -Randy Carlyle, speaking of his teams performance in Long Island ahead of the game in Montreal. Winnipeg Jets 2, Montreal Canadiens 1 (Jets 27-25-5, road 13-14-1) – With the win, the Jets are now two games above the five hundred mark for the first time since starting the season 2-0. The win also moved the Jets to within four points of the final playoff spot. Four points separate spots 8-12 in the West. It was the Jets 32nd one-goal game of the season and the seventh in the last eight games. The Jets are now 8-2 in the last 10. The Jets last five wins have come against teams sitting in a playoff spot. After going winless in their first six afternoon games, the Jets have now won their last two. The first period was scoreless with both Carey Price and Al Montoya making a number of very good saves as the Canadiens outshot the Jets 12-10. The opening goal of the game came at 9:13 of the second as Toby Enstrom beat Price with a wrap around. It was Enstroms sixth of the season with assists to Chris Thorburn and Blake Wheeler. It was the second straight game that a Jets defenceman opened the scoring, after Zach Bogosian opened the scoring against Vancouver Friday. Montreal tied the game with the teams playing four on four, Brian Gionta notching his 10th of the year. Shots in the second were 13-9 in favour of the Jets. The Jets got the winner early in the third as Price mishandled the puck against the checking of Andrew Ladd, allowing Ladd to find Micheal Frolik open in front of the Montreal goal who scored his 12th of the year. Ladd has nine points in the last nine games. Jets outshot Montreal 12-10 in the third and 35-31 over the game. It was a wild third period with a number of net front battles at both ends. The game ended with a pile up in front of Montoya following a last second save. For the fourth straight game, Bogosian led the Jets in ice time at 27:30. He also led in shots on goal with six. Mark Stuart had five shots on goal as the Jets defence core accounted for 15 of the 35 shots. Dustin Byfuglien leads the Jets in hits and added to that total with 10. It was another very good game for Byfuglien. Mark Scheifele was a plus one in the game as is a plus 11 in the last 10 games. Coach Paul Maurice liked most of what he saw from his team, but there were areas of concern. “We did some funny things with the puck at strange time, but that will come. This was a confidence builder. Its not an easy building to play in. We were better in the third than in the first and second.” Jets were guilty at times of not moving the puck quick enough, allowing Montreal to create turnovers with their forecheck. “Weve made pretty good strides in some areas”, continued coach Maurice. “We are working on defining what Winnipeg Jets hockey is. Two goals, one is making the playoffs, but first is building a foundation for a game we understand. We are big, fast and young. Were using that.” On the play of Montoya, “he made some great saves. Good for the team to know whoever is in, they have confidence in him. After the Chicago game we knew we had to get him back in. Not playing for seven or eight days is like starting from scratch all the time. This win makes the Chicago win even better.” When asked about the play of Mark Stuart, who received the fighter pilot helmet from his teammates, “every game I get a far greater appreciation for the role he plays.” Stuart was as battle ready as could be for this game with a number of one-on-one confrontations, but especially with Brendan Gallagher and Gionta. The Jets continue the four game road trip Tuesday in coach Maurices old stomping grounds, Carolina (TSN Jets, TSN 1290). Twice he was head coach of the Hurricanes. Then it is into Washington and St. Louis to close out the pre-Olympic schedule (TSN Jets, TSN 1290). The Jets will then finish with 22 games in 44 days, with 15 of the 22 games against Western Conference opponents. nfl jerseys china . The Montreal Canadiens goaltenders dogs Motty (“short for Mozart”) and Duke got loose overnight. jerseys from china . The assistants greeted Aldridge with compliments and high fives. Stotts had only one word for his high-scoring forward: “Thanks.” Aldridge had 25 points and 16 rebounds in his return after missing seven games with a lower back contusion, and the Trail Blazers beat the Atlanta Hawks 100-85 on Thursday night to end a three-game losing streak. http://www.cheapjerseyssafe.com/. Its been a successful Games for Canada, which will finish near the top of the medal standings again. From repeat gold medal winners to multiple medal winners to undefeated teams to acts that define the Olympic spirit, there are many solid candidates who could be considered to receive the honour. While Fulhams statement failed to mention Meulensteens fate, the Dutchman later told BBC Radio 5 that he had been relieved of his duties at Fulham.PHOENIX — The Phoenix Suns have reached an agreement with forward P.J. Tucker on a three-year contract worth $16.5 million with the third year only partially guaranteed. A person with knowledge of the situation confirmed the contract details on Thursday, requesting anonymity because the deal had not been officially announced. Tucker was the top defender and acknowledged leader in the Suns surprising turnaround last season. He was a restricted free agent and several teams had shown an interest in him. Tuckers agreement was first reported by azcentral sports, which includes the Arizona Republic. The person also confirmed that restricted free agent Isaiah Thomas visited the Suns on Thursday with more meetings set for Friday. The Suns envision Thomas as a third point guard behind the double-point guard starting duo of Goran Dragic and Eric Bledsoe. Adding Thomas would create a crowd at point guard. The Suns also have Ish Smith, second-year pro Archie Goodwin and first-round draft pick Tyler Ennis at the position. Thomas averaged 20.3 points and 6.3 assists last season with the Sacramento Kings, who are not expected to match any significant offer sheet he signs.dddddddddddd Phoenix, with a load of cap space and a talented young roster, made a long-shot run at LeBron James before turning its attention elsewhere. The person emphasized that the talks with Thomas are unrelated to Bledsoes situation. Bledsoe is a restricted free agent but general manager Ryan McDonough has said the Suns would match any offer sheet he signs. The Suns are attempting to reach an agreement with Bledsoe before he inks any offer. Bledsoes agent, Rich Paul, also represents James, and could be occupied by those negotiations. Tucker was the heart of the energized Suns team that went 48-34 and just missed the playoffs in the tough Western Conference. Tucker, who played at Texas and helped recruit Kevin Durant to the Longhorns, was with Toronto as a rookie in 2006-07, then played in Israel, Ukraine, Greece, Italy and Germany before coming to the Suns in 2012. The 6-foot-5 small forward started all but one game, averaging a career-high 9.4 points per game. He shot 39 per cent from 3-point range, almost always from the corner. Earlier, Phoenix lost forward Channing Frye, who agreed to a contract with the Orlando Magic. BELLEFONTE, Pa. — In what sounded at times like a locker-room pep talk, Jerry Sandusky rambled in his red prison suit about being the underdog in the fourth quarter, about forgiveness, about dogs and about the movie “Seabiscuit.” With his accusers seated behind him in the courtroom, he denied committing “disgusting acts” against children and instead painted himself as the victim. And then, after he had said his piece, a judge sentenced him to 30 to 60 years in prison Tuesday, all but ensuring the 68-year-old Sandusky will spend the rest of his life behind bars for the child sexual abuse scandal that brought disgrace to Penn State and triggered the downfall of his former boss, football coach Joe Paterno. He leaves behind a trail of human and legal wreckage that could take years for the university to clear away. “The tragedy of this crime is that its a story of betrayal. The most obvious aspect is your betrayal of 10 children,” Judge John Cleland said after a hearing in which three of the men Sandusky was convicted of molesting as boys confronted him face to face and told of the lasting pain he had inflicted. The judge said he expects Sandusky to die in prison. In a disjointed, 15-minute address before he learned his sentence, Sandusky said: “In my heart I did not do these alleged disgusting acts.” Sprinkling his remarks with sports references, the former assistant coach spoke of being locked up in a jail cell, subjected to outbursts from fellow inmates, reading inspirational books and trying to find a purpose in his fate. His voice cracked as he talked about missing his loved ones, including his wife, Dottie, who was in the gallery. “Hopefully we can get better as a result of our hardship and suffering, that somehow, some way, something good will come out of this,” Sandusky said. He also spoke of instances in which he helped children and did good works in the community, adding: “Ive forgiven, Ive been forgiven. Ive comforted others, Ive been comforted. Ive been kissed by dogs, Ive been bit by dogs. Ive conformed, Ive also been different. Ive been me. Ive been loved, Ive been hated.” Sandusky was convicted in June of 45 counts, found guilty of raping or fondling boys he had met through the acclaimed youth charity he founded, The Second Mile. He plans to appeal, arguing among other things that his defence was not given enough time to prepare for trial after his arrest last November. Among the victims who spoke in court Tuesday was a young man who said he was 11 when Sandusky groped him in a shower in 1998. He said Sandusky is in denial and should “stop coming up with excuses.” “Ive been left with deep painful wounds that you caused and had been buried in the garden of my heart for many years,” he said. Another man said he was 13 in 2001 when Sandusky lured him into a Penn State sauna and then a shower and forced him to touch the ex-coach. “I am troubled with flashbacks of his naked body, something that will never be erased from my memory,” he said. After the sentencing, prosecutor Joe McGettigan praised the victims courage and dismissed Sanduskys comments as “a masterpiece of banal self-delusion, completely untethered from reality and without any acceptance of responsibility.” “It was entirely self-focused as if he, again, were the victim,” McGettigan said. Lawyers for the victims said they were satisfied with the sentence, but with four lawsuits brought against Penn State and several more expected, and Penn State labouring under severe NCAA penalties, cleaning up in the wake of what may be the biggest scandal in college sports history may take years. Ben Andreozzi, a lawyer for one the victims, said the university needs to do more: “Its important they understand before we get into serious discussions about money, that there are other, noneconomic issues. We need apologies. We need changes in policy. This isnt just about money.” Penn State fired Paterno after Sanduskys arrest, and the coach died of lung cancer three months later. The scandal also brought down university president Graham Spanier. Two university administrators, Gary Schultz and Tim Curley, are awaiting trial in January on charges they failed to properly report suspicions about Sandusky and lied to the grand jury that investigated him. Over the summer, an investigation commissioned by Penn State and led by former FBI Director Louis Freeh concluded that Paterno and other top officials covered up allegations against Sandusky for more than a decade to avoid bad publicity. After the report came out, the NCAA fined Penn State a record US$60 million, barred the football team from post-season play for four years, cut the number of scholarships it can award, and erased 14 years of victories for Paterno, stripping him of his standing as the coach with the most career wins in big-time college football. In a three-minute recorded statement aired Monday night by Penn State radio, Sandusky described himself as the victim of a “well-orchestrated effort” by his accusers, the media, Penn State, plaintiffs attorneys and others — a claim the judge dismissed on Tuesday as an unbelievable conspiracy theory. “I speak today with hope in my heart for a brighter day, not knowing if that day will come,” Sandusky said. “Many moments have been spent looking for a purpose. Maybe it will help others, some vulnerable children who might have been abused, might not be, as a result of the publicity.” After the sentencing, Penn State president Rodney Erickson said in a statement: “Our thoughts today, as they have been for the last year, go out to the victims of Jerry Sanduskys abuse. While todays sentence cannot erase what has happened, hopefully it will provide comfort to those affected by these horrible events.” cheap jerseys . Tanner Roark took over as the starting pitcher for the finale of the opening three-game series. He had been slated to start Washingtons home opener Friday against the Atlanta Braves. Nationals manager Matt Williams said Zimmermann was being sent back to Washington ahead of the team and being given fluids. He said the pitcher, who went 19-9 with a 3.25 ERA last year, was feeling fine Wednesday but took ill after the game. “Hes running a fever. He was up all night throwing up,” Williams said. “Evidently hes feeling pretty under the weather.” Roark, a 27-year-old right-hander, was 7-1 witth a 1.dddddddddddd1 ERA in five starts and nine relief appearances as a rookie last year, striking out 40 and walking 11 in 53 2-3 innings. He was informed of the change in plans during a phone call Thursday morning from pitching coach Steve McCatty. Williams hopes Taylor Jordan is ready to pitch Friday on short rest. While his last exhibition appearance was March 24, he threw a simulated outing this week and would be starting on short rest. Washingtons second option would be a series of relievers. “If hes not ready to go tomorrow, then thats going to have to be our option,” Williams said. SANTANDER, Spain — Racing Santander made good on its threat to boycott its Copa del Rey quarterfinal against Real Sociedad over unpaid wages, refusing to play on Thursday because the clubs president did not resign. Sociedad held a 3-1 first-leg lead going into the match at El Sardinero Stadium, but players from third-tier Santander said they had no intention of playing if Angel Lavin and his board did not step down. Both teams took to the field but Santanders players immediately lined up near the half after kickoff and refused to play, with the referee suspending the game after one minute. Sociedad kicked the ball around before shooting it into the stands where spectators showed their support for the players by chanting “dont play!” “What we did today was in respect of football, a sport that we love,” coach Paco Fernandez said. “Today was the most important game of our lives, but our dignity took precedence.” International players union, FIFPRO, and Spanish union AFE both supported the move, which comes after the lower-tier clubs players had not been paid in four months despite promises by Lavin. Santanders actions could see the club fined or even banned from the Copa del Rey next season. “Its very difficult to decide to do this, especially in a quarterfinal. Its an extreme situation,” defender Oriol Lozarano said. “We know what the consequences could be, that we can be kicked out of the competition, but we knew we had the support of the fans to do what we did.” Its not the first time that Santander has used the domestic cup competition to bring awareness to its situation, with the players standing idly for 30 seconds to start a last-16 game against Almeria before eventually playing. That match also saw Santander ultras invade the presidents box, sparking off violent scenes. Fans were allowed to enter El Sardinero for free on Thursday. Santander has slipped down to the third division in just two seasons following the exit of former owner Ahsan Ali Syed, who left the club in crisis, relegated from the top-flight in 2012 and needing a cash injection just to stay afloat. Santander is not the first team to refuse to play a Copa del Rey game, with Barcelona boycotting a return leg against Atletico Madrid during the 1999-2000 season. But in that case, Barcelona boycotted because of scheduling with the international calendar leaving it with just nine outfield players available. Sociedad will play Barcelona in the semifinals. The Kings have gone 6-0-3 over their last nine games despite having been held to three goals or fewer in eight of 10 contests this month. The Blue Jays, however, will have to wait to see what Dustin McGowan has to offer. Tanaka scattered six hits over seven innings to win his major-league debut 7-3 and help the Yankees spoil Torontos home opener. A successful Yankees challenge on replay helped set the stage for the winning runs to score. The Japanese right-hander struck out eight after an early wobble and did not walk a batter while giving up three runs, only two of which were earned. Tanaka (1-0) threw 97 pitches including 65 strikes in a promising debut. “Hes definitely the real deal,” said Toronto manager John Gibbons, while lamenting his team was unable to capitalize early when the door was open somewhat. “I thought he settled down great,” said Yankees manager Joe Girardi. “The first couple of innings were a little rough … (but) to give us seven innings and be under 100 pitches, he did a really really good job.” Jays leadoff hitter Melky Cabrera welcomed Tanaka to the majors with a home run to right field on his third delivery. Not helped by his defence, he gave up two more runs in the second. Still the 25-year-old managed four strikeouts in the first two innings and soon settled down, efficiently mowing down Blue Jays while quieting the sellout Rogers Centre crowd of 48,197. After the Jays got their runs in the second, he retired 11 of 12 and faced the minimum batters in the fourth, fifth, sixth and seventh before calling it a night with a 5-3 lead. “He was able to fix his mistakes early on and thats the sign of a mature pitcher to me,” Girardi said. New York (2-2) had 16 hits to six for Toronto (2-3), which used six pitchers on the night. The Yankees could have scored more but left 11 men on base. McGowan (0-1) gave up four earned runs on eight hits with three strikeouts and one walk in just 2 2/3 innings, leaving another question-mark over the Jays starting pitching. “He feels fine,” Gibbons said. “Hes better than that and hell get better than that.” The Jays will need an improvement, with the night sucking five relievers out of the Toronto bullpen. Plus the team has now surrendered 11-plus hits in three of its five games to date. In his defence, the 32-year-old McGowan was making his first big-league start since Sept. 26, 2011, and just his fifth since the 2008 season. It didnt help that McGowan was somehow tipping his pitches, by setting in different spots. “Its something hes never done before … It makes it much easier to hit,” said Gibbons. “Ive got to fix that tipping thing for sure,” said McGowan. “Because even I noticed after the first inning they were putting good swings on every pitch I threw. I knew something was wrong from the get-go.” McGowan endured a wild opening inning that saw him give up four singles and a double but just two runs. He left trailing 4-3 after No. 8 hitter Yangervis Solarte doubled home two runners in an inning extended by a successful Yankees challenge to Ichiro Suzuki being thrown out at first by Ryan Goins. Both managers said the challenge system worked as it was designed to go. “Thats why we have it,” said Gibbons. “You want to get calls right. Without instant replay, were out of that inning.” Added Girardi: “I thought it worked well.” The home oopener, visit of the Yankees and MLB debut of Tanaka resulted in more than 300 media credentials — including production staff — being issued for the night.dddddddddddd Large groups of media milled around on the field in front of both clubhouses before the game, like armies preparing for battle. Girardi seemed unfazed, wandering over to check out the medals of several Canadian Olympians who were being honoured on the night. Knuckleballer R.A. Dickey received his Gold Glove award prior to the 10 Olympians who were honoured pre-game before an enthusiastic crowd waving freebie rally flags. Former Jays and Phillies pitcher Roy Halladay threw out the first pitch after a gigantic Canadian flag was packed up in the outfield. The Jays early pitching stumbles, however, robbed the night of much of its excitement. The Yankees have invested US$175 million to get seven years worth of Tanaka, including $20 million just to earn the right to negotiate for his services. Tanaka went 24-0 with a 1.27 ERA last season for the Tohoku Rakuten Golden Eagles in Japans Pacific League. He joins Japans Suzuki and Hiroki Kuroda on the Yankees roster. The win was Tanakas 100th as a pro. “Obviously Im happy. But I think No. 1 is that Im relieved,” he said through an interpreter. “I was missing some spots earlier in the game, but as the game progressed I think I was getting better out there,” he added. The six-foot-two 205-pounder arrives with an array of pitching weapons, with his splitter said to be the jewel of the lot. While the spotlight shone on Tanaka, the Yankees gave Derek Jeter the night off. McGowan, whose major league pitching line was blank for 2009, 10 and 12, has been sidelined by a medical dictionary of ailments that includes Tommy John surgery, knee and shoulder operations and a bout of plantar fasciitis. As a reliever last year, he made 25 appearances — his most since the 2007 season. “All hes been through, hes defying all the odds really,” Gibbons said before the game of the six-foot-three 240-pounder, who is due to make US$1.5 million this season. It proved to be a rough return to the rotation, with pitching coach Pete Walker quickly coming out of the dugout as McGowan wobbled out of the starting blocks. He found himself down 2-0 with the bases loaded after just one out but escaped without further damage. That promoted mayoral candidate Olivia Chow, who was at the game, to tweet: “If Im elected mayor, it will be illegal for the visiting team to get five hits in the first inning of the home opener.” Mayor Rob Ford, whose own legal issues have been somewhat seamier, was also in attendance. Cabreras leadoff homer marked just the second time in Jays history that a player has led off the home opener with a home run. Shannon Stewart did it in 2000 against Kansas City. Tanaka was victimized in the second in the wake of two one-out singles. After first baseman Mark Teixeiras throwing error, shortstop Jonathan Diaz singled home two runs for an unlikely 3-2 lead. Teixeira left the game later in the inning with a strained right hamstring after going after a foul ball. The Yankees added a run in the fourth off reliever Aaron Loup, another in the eighth off Steve Dalabar and one more in the ninth off Jeremy Jeffress to increase the lead to 7-3. After the game, the Jays announced they had designated Jeffress for assignment. Pistorius now faces charges of murder, illegal possession of ammunition and two other counts of breaking South Africas firearms laws in his trial in March. Pistorius lawyers received a letter on Tuesday advising them that the two charges, already raised against Pistorius, would be added to the indictment served on the athlete in August, National Prosecuting Authority spokesman Nathi Mncube told The Associated Press. Pistorius lawyers failed in an initial application opposing the inclusion of the two charges in his murder trial but can “take the matter up” again, Mncube said. Mncube said the additional charges were not in the original indictment because they are alleged to have occurred in the Johannesburg region, a different court jurisdiction to Pistorius fatal shooting of girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp at his villa in a gated estate in the South African capital, Pretoria, in the pre-dawn hours of Feb. 14. Prosecutors had to seek permission from South Africas new National Director of Public Prosecutions to “centralize” all the charges, Mncube said, so they all could be heard in the same trial at the North Gauteng High Court in Pretoria. “The National Director has indeed given them (prosecutors) that authority and they will be added,” Mncube said. “They are not new charges, they were charges that already existed. They were just in a different jurisdiction.” Pistorius murder trial is due too start Mar.dddddddddddd 3 and the 26-year-old disabled runner faces a life sentence with a minimum of 25 years in prison if he is convicted on the main charge of premeditated murder in the killing of Steenkamp on Valentines Day. Mncube declined to detail the charges being added, only saying there were two counts and they covered “the contravention of the firearms control act.” The South African media has reported that Pistorius has twice shot a gun in a public place: One time out of a moving car when he was driving with a former girlfriend and another at a restaurant in Johannesburg when he apparently accidentally fired a friends gun under a table while admiring it. Pistorius spokeswoman Anneliese Burgess told the AP that the Pistorius family did not want to comment on “legal aspects” of the case. But Mncube said Pistorius lawyers had argued against him being charged and tried in a Pretoria court for alleged offences that occurred in Johannesburg. “They are not saying he cant be charged for those, they are saying he cant be charged in a different jurisdiction,” Mncube said. Mncubes National Prosecuting Authority would not comment on any of the details surrounding the two charges to be added, but people who are believed to have been present at those incidents were included in the prosecutions list of more than 100 trial witnesses when Pistorius was indicted two months ago. Pistorius denies murder and says he shot Steenkamp in self-defence through a toilet cubicle door with his licensed 9mm handgun, thinking mistakenly that she was a dangerous intruder in his house. Prosecutors say he intended to kill her, possibly after a loud argument in the middle of the night. LAS VEGASUCLA went into the season with the uncertainty that comes with a new coach. The Bruins suffered their share of setbacks, a notable one just a week earlier. Once the Pac-12 tournament got rolling, the Bruins took off. Now, after trading body blows with one of the nations best defensive teams, UCLA takes home a Pac-12 championship in its first season under Steve Alford. Outlasting one of the best closing teams in basketball, UCLA knocked off No. 4 Arizona 75-71 in the conference tournament final on Saturday. “Weve got an edge to us now, its a lot of fun,” Alford said. “To win a championship means a lot to us.” They definitely earned this one, emerging from a battle of the Pac-12s best teams that featured big plays, big blows and floor burns. The Wildcats locked UCLA down in the second half after an offensive show in the first. The Bruins countered by doing the same thing to Arizona down the stretch, and then made the big plays against the big-play Wildcats to finish it off. UCLA point guard Kyle Anderson was at his all-around best, finishing with 21 points, 15 rebounds and five assists. Jordan Adams made a big 3-pointer with 45 seconds left and scored 19 points. Norman Powell scored 15 points and combined with David Wear to hit four free throws in the final five seconds. After three games in three days, the Bruins are Pac-12 champions and on a big roll headed into the NCAA tournament. “This gives us the confidence that we not only play with anybody, but beat anybody,” Alford said. “But youve got to get hot and stay hot.” Arizona (30-4) started flat defensively, clawed back behind its offence and shut down the Bruins through most of the second half. The Wildcats were unable to finish it off for one of the rare times this season, hurt by 10 missed free throws and questionable shot selection down the stretch. Nick Johnson led Arizona with 22 points and Kaleb Tarczewski added 12. Aaron Gordon had 11 points, eight rebounds and eight assists for the Wildcats, who may have lost out on a No. 1 seed in the NCAA tournament with the loss. “We lost a game we could have won,” Arizona coach Sean Miller said. “Jordan Adams hit a great shot and I believe some of the things we learned in todays game will better serve us for the biggest prize, why we all do this, and thats to hopefully advance next week in the NCAA tournament.” After 10 games in three days, the Pac-12 tournament came down to UCLA and Arizona, the top two seeds, on a big roll since arriving in Sin City. Arizona, the conferences regular-season champion, overwhelmed its first two opponents with its dont-let-them-breathe defence. The Wildcats raced into the tournament record books with their 32-point win over Utah in the quarterfinals and cranked up the highlight reel in the second half of its semifinal rout over Colorado, allowing 82 combined points in the two games. UCLA swamped Oregon in its opener, turning what was supposed to be a track meet into a stomping. The Bruins did the same thing to Stanford in the semifinals, all but putting the game out of reach in the opening five minutes. These teams met once during the regular season, Jan. 9 in Westwood. Arizona ended a three-game losing streak to the Bruins in that one, escaping with a 79-75 win despite 17 turnovers and blowing a 13-point lead in the final 6 1/2 minutes. UCLA had the advantage early in the rematch by doing what two previous tournament opponents couldnt: Score on the Wildcats. Pushing the pace at every turn, the Bruins got shots seemingly wherever and whenever they wanted. UCLA used a 12-0 run to go up 14-3 and kept pouring em in against one of the nations best defences. The Bruins hit 18 of 31 shots and scored 43 points in the first half — more than Utah did the entire game against Arizona and matching Colorados total. “They came out and punched us in the mouth,” Johnson said. The Wildcats kicked their offence into gear to get back in it, shaking off some questionable shots in the opening minutes with a string of 3-pointers, including three by Gabe York. Arizona shot 16 of 30, including 5 of 8 from the arc, to close to 43-40 at the half. The game turned from an offensive show to a defensive shutdown in the second, every possession a struggle to get off a pass, much less a good shot. Travis Wear and Gordon typified the effort of the entire game late in the half, sprinting from beyond midcourt, simultaneously diving and skidding across the floor for a loose ball. Wear came up with the ball and the Bruins the win, giving them a big notch on the belt in their first season under Alford. . Justin Upton homered and scored the tiebreaking run on Chris Johnsons eighth-inning single, and the Atlanta Braves beat the St. Louis Cardinals 2-1 on Tuesday night to end their seven-game skid. . — Floridas seniors, those four guys who fell just short of the Final Four the last three years, talked about cutting down the nets after clinching the Southeastern Conferences regular-season championship.Congratulations to the Saskatchewan Roughriders – the 2013 Grey Cup Champions. Thats a statement of genuine significance when you consider the work and risk that was undertaken in the offseason and throughout the year. In some ways, the Riders gambled and won. Heading into the season, the thought of being the home team in the Grey Cup must have been intoxicating. It wasnt just the advantage in terms of actually winning the game – and it was – but also the revenue generated in the city of Regina and throughout the province. An estimated $123 million will be shelled out from CFL fans from Saskatchewan and across the country. During the offseason, I couldnt help but think there was pressure to make that win happen because of the benefits it curtailed. The aspects of the Grey Cup I enjoy the most are the moments you know you will never experience again. Martin Short and Tom Hanks just dropping by to be a part of the crowd was surreal. Shaking hands with two entertainment icons at the top of their profession and then watching Tom Hanks lead the “0skie Wee Wee” song was a sight to behold. There was no beefed up security and no entourage – just a one entertainer sharing a Canadian experience with another. And hats off to the way the people of Regina embraced their fellow Canadians from other provinces and territories, expressing only a desire to share this moment in time. The way the fans embraced our CFL panel with a level of respect and affection that each of us experienced and are grateful for. From where we sat in the stands and walking throughout the streets of Reginaa, I give my personal thanks to everyone for making us feel so appreciated and welcome.ddddddddddddI didnt have a single negative experience with anyone I met or came across. Its an amazing, uplifting and humbling experience when youre on the sidelines and people are applauding your presence. And how about the scene after the game when the Riders had won and the Grey Cup was being presented? Not one person left. All 50,000 (at least!) people stayed – from the highest of the rafters right down to field level. It was cold, wet and uncomfortable, but an hour after the game everyone was still there. Seeing the efficiency and focus of the Riders from the opening intros to the players victory formation to end the game, you kinda knew this was meant to be. And what a way to end the last championship at Mosaic Stadium/Taylor Field. As we look ahead to 2014 there are two new stadiums on the horizon and a new team on the way. Having those stadiums up and ready to go on time is important for a new era of stability in the league. An thought we say this at the end of every Grey Cup (and its the truth), this years event was a complete success on many fronts. Sure, you would want a more competitive game. But in terms of a city hosting a sporting event, this one past holds its own high degree of success. Many thanks to the planners, investors, workers and especially the volunteers. You hit a home run in making all feel welcome – except the Hamilton Tiger Cats (But watch out, they may be back next year)! And as many Rider fans will surely respond, “So will we!” cheap nfl jerseys wholesale jerseys ’ ’ ’

The Vancouver Canucks current ironman could see his streak come to an end. Captain Henrik Sedin was not at the Xcel Energy Center in Minnesota for Wednesdays practice and was seen at the teams hotel limping around in a large walking boot. X-rays on Sedins ankle were inconclusive so he is having a CT scan in Minnesota today. His playing status wont be known until after the scan. Sedin was injured in Tuesdays win over the Nashville Predators, when a point shot by defenceman Kevin Klein struck him in the right ankle early in the first period. Sedin dropped to the ice and had to be helped to the dressing room. He returned to the game and proceeded to assist on the Canucks first two goals. Sedin has appeared in 552 consecutive games, the second-longest active streak in the NHL. Jay Bouwmeester of the Calgary Flames sits atop the list at 559 consecutive games. Dale Weiss will also have a CT scan after blocking a shot in last nights game. . NEW ORLEANS — The Saints and Jonathan Goodwin have agreed to a one-year contract bringing the veteran centre back to New Orleans, the club announced Tuesday. The 35-year-old Goodwin has spent the past three seasons with San Francisco, playing in three straight NFC title games and a Super Bowl. Goodwin played for New Orleans from 2006 to 2010, starting the last three of those seasons. He was named to a Pro Bowl and won a Super Bowl in the 2009 season. His new deal is worth $955,000, a person familiar with negotiations told The Associated Press, speaking on condition of anonymity because financial terms were not released. The Saints also signed defensive lineman Brandon Deaderick to a one-year contract, general manager Mickey Loomis said. Prior to the re-acquisition of Goodwin, second-year pro Tim Lelito and undrafted rookie Matt Armstrong were the top candidates to take over the Saints starting centre job, which was vacated by Brian de la Puente when he left for Chicago in free agency. The experience of the 6-foot-3, 318-pound Goodwin, a 12-year veteran, will give him an edge. Lelito saw limited action last season, but only as a reserve guard, while his work as a backup centre was limited to practice. At the same time, the Saints see the 6-4, 315-pound Lelito as a promising prospect and also have asserted that a young centre can thrive in their system, in part because quarterback Drew Brees calls out the bulk of blocking adjustments at the line of scrimmage and in part because whhoever plays centre will have a pair of veteran Pro Bowlers on either side of him in guards Jahri Evans and Ben Grubbs.dddddddddddd However, because off-season practices do not involve full contact, it has been difficult for coaches to fully evaluate how ready Lelito is to be a regular centre. “Tim is someone that has handled the transition right now pretty well,” coach Sean Payton said last week. “But he is going to have to, when we get into training camp, do it in a live setting.” Like Lelito, the 6-2, 302-pound Armstrong played at Grand Valley State. Last season, he was named by the Rimington Award committee as the nations top Division II centre. Evans is the only starter on the offensive line who also started during Goodwins last season in New Orleans. Goodwin was teammates with Zach Strief for five seasons, but Strief did not take over as the starter at right tackle until 2011, the year Goodwin left for San Francisco. On the left side of the line are Grubbs, who was acquired as a free agent in 2012, and tackle Terron Armstrong, who was drafted in 2013. The 6-4, 305-pound Deaderick is a four-year NFL veteran who has played in 47 career games with 15 starts. He joined the NFL as New Englands seventh-round pick in 2010 and spent three seasons with the Patriots. Last season, he played for Jacksonville, appearing in 13 games. He has been credited with 50 tackles in his career, along with 5.5 sacks, three forced fumbles, one fumble recovery and two passes defenced. Got a question on rule clarification, comments on rule enforcements or some memorable NHL stories? Kerry wants to answer your emails at cmonref@tsn.ca! Kerry, Two nights after the Scott-Eriksson incident in Buffalo, the Bruins returned home to play San Jose. In that game, Zdeno Chara put a check on Tommy Wingels that clearly targeted his head. This check was not a late check as Scotts. However, the check still targeted the head of an opposing player! Please explain the consistency/inconsistency of penalties called here? Tom Van Dusen - Kerry, Can you explain why the NHL has completely ignored the high hit Chara leveled in Thursday nights game against the Sharks? It was on Tommy Wingels – It was well late and you can see Chara appear to intentionally go high by bringing his arms up right before contact. So the size differential between the players shouldnt be a factor. How to on-ice officials missed it is beyond me, but more perplexing is the league ignoring them as well? How can they say they are serious about head shots and player safety, but allow these hits to go unpunished? Looking forward to your insight. Spencer Doherty CLICK HERE TO VIEW VIDEO Tom and Spencer: Call me a dreamer but in a “perfect NHL” I would like nothing better than to see all contact to the head eliminated. The harsh reality is that given the speed of this contact sport, attack angles and body position can often be altered just prior to an intended legal hit. As a result, there are times when I am afraid to admit contact to the head will continue to occur. Under the current playing rules, contact to the head in almost all cases should be worthy of at least a minor penalty; but not always a suspension. The intended check by Zdeno Chara that resulted in Tommy Wingels head becoming the main point of contact is one of these times. The call on the ice should have resulted in a minor for high-sticking or two minutes for illegal check to the head. Every play must be judged on its own merit. Several factors, including the language contained in rule 48, must be considered when a potential suspension is warranted. Rather than looking at the current rule as ambiguous (which admittedly is not easy to do) let us attempt to dissect the language and apply it to Charas hit on Wingels versus the other end of the spectrum; John Scotts head shot on Loui Eriksson. An illegal check to the head results when the head was the main point of contact and such contact to the head was avoidable. In determining if Charas contact to Wingels head was avoidable, we must factor in the following: i) Whether the player (Chara) attempted to hit squarely through the opponents body and the head was not picked as a result of poor timing, poor angle of approach, or unnecessary extension of the body upward or outward. ii) Whether the opponent (Wingels) put himself in a vulnerable position by assuming a posture that made head contact on an otherwise full body check unavoidable. iii) Whether the opponent (Wingels) materially changed the position of his body or head immediately prior to or simultaneously with the hit in a way that significantly contributed to the head contact. Zdeno Chara approached Tommy Wingels to make a hit squarely through the body with his shoulder. Charas hands and stick, based on his left shooting posture, were positioned in front of the intended contact and to seal off Wingels route to the net at the boards. Tommy Wingels anticipated the contact from Chara after releasing the puck to teammate Tomas Hertl directly behind the Bruins net and ducked down in an attempt to slip the intended check by Big Z. Chara reacted to this material change of Wingels body position at the last second by extending his hands to make contact; albeit to the head/helmet of his opponent. I deem this illegal contact to be a high-sticking infraction or a minor penalty for illegal check to the head, if you prefer! How could it be missed on the ice, you asked? The referee, deep in the corner on the opposite side of the ice, set up in a direct line looking through Hertl who provided an obstructed view for the finish of Charas hit on Wingels. Referee-1 became a puck watcher on the play and missed Charas infraction as Hertl received the pass with no threat of being checked by a Bruins defender. There was no need for Ref-1 to maintain a visual focus on Hertl at this time. Ref 2 on the same side of the ice and outside the blue line as Zdeno Charas hit was most likely obstructed by Charas body and did not see the hands come up to make contact with Wingels head. These reasons do not excuse the fact that both Refs missed the call on the ice but provide you with some insight as to how it could have occurred. Both Refs needed to move their feet to gain the proper angle and retain a focus of attention on the finish of Zdeno Charas illegal check on Tommy Wingels. While this play was deserving of a two minute penalty (but no suspension), I would like to see the maximum allowable fine implemented in all cases where the head was the main point of contact resulting from an illegal check. The capability to fine players is currently within the arsenal of the Player Safety Committee to help act as a deterrent for contact to the head of an opponent. OKLAHOMA CITY — Zach Randolph scored 25 points to help the Memphis Grizzlies defeat the Oklahoma City Thunder 111-105 in overtime on Monday night and tie their first-round playoff series at one game apiece. Mike Conley added 19 points and 12 assists for the Grizzlies. Kevin Durant had 36 points and 11 rebounds for the Thunder. Russell Westbrook scored 29 points for Oklahoma City, but he made just 11 of 28 shots. Randolphs layup with 26 seconds left in overtime put the Grizzlies up by two. Oklahoma Citys Serge Ibaka travelled, giving the ball back to the Grizzlies. Courtney Lee made two free throws for Memphis to make it a four-point game. Durant missed a 3-pointer and Randolph made two free throws with nine seconds left to put the game out of reach. Game 3 is Thursday night in Memphis. The Thunder trailed by nine early in the fourth quarter, but they finally took the lead when Thabo Sefolosha stole the ball from Randolph, leading to a dunk by Durant with 1:14 remaining. Mike Miller came back with a 3-pointer to put Memphis up 95-93 with 53.7 seconds left. Westbrook missed a 3-pointer and Memphis rebounded. Conley missed the first free throw and made the second to make it a three-point game. Tony Allen stole the ball from Durant, and Conley made two free throws with 18.1 seconds left to push the Grizzlies lead to five. Durant answered with a miraculous four-point play with 13.8 seconds remaining. He hit a 3-pointer from the corner as he was being pushed out of bounds by Marc Gasol. Durant then converted the free throw to make it a one-point game. Conley made one of two free throws with 12 seconds left to make it 99-97. Westbrook missed a wild 3-pointer in the closing seconds, but Kendrick Perkins, who hadnt made a field goal all game, scored on a putback as time expired to force overtime. Advancing to the Champions League quarterfinals should be a formality after Lionel Messi scored a penalty and Dani Alves added a late second to secure a commanding 2-0 advantage over City in the round of 16 on Tuesday. Barcelona midfielder Cesc Fabregas felt confident enough to deliver a message to his teams critics: “They will have to shut up for a few days.” It seems incongruous that Fabregas would have to be so defensive of Barcelona, given his team tops the Spanish standings, has reached the Copa del Rey final and is on the verge of reaching the Champions League quarterfinals for the seventh straight year. “Theres nothing else you can ask for,” Fabregas said. So much for the Catalan giants being a fading force. This win, against a team that seeks to emulate Barcelona on and off the pitch, exposed the gulf between them. And City, which has spent heavily to reach the knockout phase for the first time, couldnt keep up with the elegant visitors. “Maybe we had to prove a point in a way and I think we did it,” Fabregas said. “And I think we did it in a style.” Waves of attacks by the Spanish champions had been repelled until the start of the second half when Martin Demichelis couldnt keep up with the speedy Messi, dragging down his fellow Argentine and conceding the penalty. Even after Messi made it 11 goals in 11 games since returning from injury, City managed to test Barcelona goalkeeper Victor Valdes more than had it with a full complement of players. But City couldnt equalize against the run of play and Dani Alves successfully completed a one-two with substitute Neymar in the 90th minute to score the teams 113th goal of the season. It was an unsettling introduction to the knockout phase of the competition for City, with Barcelonas poise and panache enabling the four-time European champions to remain in near-complete control against Englands emerging force. Rather than acknowleedging the strength of the opposition, City manager Manuel Pellegrini questioned the integrity of Swedish referee Jonas Eriksson.dddddddddddd “From the beginning I could see the ref was not impartial to both teams,” Pellegrini said. And Pellegrini felt that the referee was not up to managing a game of this magnitude despite being selected by FIFA for the World Cup. A Swede lit up the nights other game. Zlatan Ibrahimovic scored twice, between goals from Blaise Matuidi and Yohan Cabaye, as Paris Saint-Germain won 4-0 at Bayer Leverkusen. The second legs of both games are on March 12, and wiping out a 2-0 deficit would seem to be beyond City at this stage. Especially if it struggles to break up Barcelonas flowing passing moves like at the Etihad. Somehow, though, the hosts emerged unscathed from their hesitant start and even produced the first meaningful shot of the match after 25 minutes when Alvaro Negredo curled the ball at Valdes. For all Barcelonas dominance, Hart had one meaningful save to make in the first half, pushing away Xavi Hernandezs long-range strike. “I thought we maybe gave a little too much respect to them in the beginning,” City captain Vincent Kompany said. “They were there for the taking.” But City couldnt and, after a quiet first half by his standards, Messis key contribution came after the break, scoring his 66th Champions League goal in the 54th minute, putting him just five from levelling Raul Gonzalezs record. Aside from Xavi firing over and Dani Alves skewing an effort wide, City looked more likely to find the net at times in the second half despite chasing shadows so often. Then a lightening move down the right flank was completed by Dani Alves putting the ball through Harts legs from a tight angle, giving Barca a comfortable lead as it chases a first European title since 2011. “They are incredibly efficient,” Kompany said. “When you play against them you do realize the individual quality of this team is phenomenal and it makes it so difficult to close them down.” cheap nfl jerseys wholesale jerseys ’ ’ ’

TORONTO — A concussion has denied Canadian lightweight T.J. Grant a shot at the UFC title for a second time. The 29-year-old from Cole Harbour, N.S., knocked out veteran Gray (The Bully) Maynard at UFC 160 in May to earn a title shot against Benson (Smooth) Henderson. But that opportunity went instead to former WEC champion Anthony (Showtime) Pettis when a concussion sustained in training sidelined the Canadian. Pettis made the most of his chance, submitting Henderson in August to win the 155-pound crown. The UFC said Grant would get first crack at Pettis, with a televised card Dec. 14 in Sacramento the likely stage. Grant, however, explained in a series of tweets that he is still injured. “Unfortunately I wont be fighting Pettis on Dec. 14,” he said. “I am still not yet 100% (and) cant commit to fighting. UFC is going with someone else instead. It sucks but it is the best for both myself and the UFC. Please dont worry. Ill be back and if I gotta fight someone else to get back to where I wanna be then thats whats Im gonna do. Im not bitter.” Added Grant: “I accept bad things when I step into (the) cage. But long term health is .1.” Josh Thomson (20-5) is the lucky replacement this time. Thomson, ranked fifth among lightweight contenders, will take on Pettis in the main event at Sleep Train Arena. While Tortorella took some of the blame, he also didnt pull any punches. He said the Canucks are getting old, the core group has become complacent and the team needs to get younger. “I felt from day one that its stale,” said Tortorella. "Thats not their fault. This is a group that has been together for a long time. “It needs youth. It needs a change. The team needs to be retooled. Its a young mans game. Its certainly not a criticism of (the veterans). We need to surround them with some enthusiasm.” After a promising start under Tortorella, the Canucks finished the year with a 36-35-11 record for 83 points. Vancouver managed just 13 wins in 41 games since Jan. 1 and settled for a 25th-place finish in the overall standings. The poor showing has already cost Mike Gillis his job as president and general manager. New president Trevor Linden — the Canucks former captain — still must decide Tortorellas fate. The two were scheduled to meet later Monday. Centre Ryan Kesler, who was the subject of trade rumours this year, said the players have to take responsibility for the season. “Were all flabbergasted right now,” said Kesler, who led Vancouver with 25 goals. “Going into this year I would never think we would be sitting here in this situation.” The Canucks ended their season with a 5-1 win over the Calgary Flames last Sunday but the victory was soured by an ugly incident late in the second period. Daniel Sedin was taken off the ice on a stretcher after being hit from behind by Calgarys Paul Byron. Sedin was taken to hospital and later released. After the hit, Sedin lay crumpled on the ice and couldnt raise his head. “I was scared,” he said at Mondays season-ending news conference. "I tried to lift my head at first and couldnt get it off the ice. “The only thing I thought was lay still. I tried to move my hands and it felt good. I went to the hospital and everything looks good. I feel OK today.” Tortorella said fans and management cant keep reminiscing about the Canucks loss in Game 7 of the 2011 Stanley Cup final, but instead must concentrate on making the team better again. “Were not in 2011,” said the man hired last year to replace the fired Alain Vigneault. "We have to stop talking about 2011. “The core needs to change.” Canucks captain Henrik Sedin said the team was “really good” until hhalfway through the season when injuries became a problem.dddddddddddd Both Sedins, Alex Burrows and defenceman Chris Tanev all missed a significant number of games with injuries. “You never want to use injuries (as an excuse but) we had a tough year,” said Henrik. "We had guys playing out of position. We had guys playing more minutes than they were used to. “We had to play a different way and we werent able to win playing that way.” Tortorella said during this period he made a coaching mistake by giving the room to the players. “I didnt get back in the room and continue to teach the details,” he said. "I didnt stay on top of it. “I needed to be pounding away at the details. I think that hurt us in situational play. I think that hurt us in trying to understand how you change momentum. Thats not the team, thats me. Thats my biggest regret.” A lack of scoring haunted Vancouver all season. The Canucks managed just 196 goals, leaving them tied for second fewest in the league. For the first time in a non-lockout season, Vancouver had just one 20-goal scorer in Kesler. Daniel Sedin finished the year with 16 goals and went through a stretch of 23 games without scoring. Henrik Sedin had just 11 goals. Burrows, who hadnt scored less than 25 goals in the last four full seasons, had just five. “People talk about we are playing too much defence,” said Daniel. "Honestly we played as aggressively as we have been. “That has nothing to do with why our production is down. Its up to us to play like we can.” Defenceman Alex Edler, who begins a US$30-million, six-year contract next season, finished the season at -39, the worst plus-minus in the NHL. “There was a lot of changes this year (in how we played in own end) and a lot of new things to get used to,” said Edler. “I think I didnt have the year I should have had but I know I am a good player.” The Canucks have had several distractions to deal with over the last year. Tortorellas hiring was a surprise. Goaltender Cory Schneider was traded during the summer, meaning Roberto Luongo was the Vancouver starter after believing he was gone. Luongo was eventually traded to Florida. Tortorella missed six games after being suspended for trying to get into the Calgary locker-room following a line brawl to open a Jan. 18 game against the Flames. The Canucks were 2-4-0 during that period, then 2-7-1 when Tortorella returned. “When you lose a head coach its never good,” said Henrik Sedin. “I dont think it was specifically that incident that made us start losing.” cheap nfl jerseys wholesale jerseys ’ ’ ’
