SUNRISE, Fla. – Brad Boyes and Jonathan Huberdeau scored in a shootout, lifting the Florida Panthers over the Minnesota Wild 2-1 on Saturday night to snap a three-game losing streak. Boyes backhander went through the legs of goalie Josh Harding for the winner. Huberdeau beat Harding on the stick side for the first shootout goal. Zach Parise and Mikko Koivu were turned aside by Panthers goalie Tim Thomas in the shootout. Aleksander Barkov scored in regulation for Florida, and Thomas made 31 saves. Jonas Brodin scored a goal for Minnesota, while Harding stopped 21 shots. The Wild lost their third straight and managed two or fewer goals for the seventh time this season. The Panthers tied it 1-all with a power-play goal at 6:49 of the third. Tomas Fleischmann took a pass from Brian Campbell at the top of the right circle, and Fleischmanns slap shot was deflected into the net by Barkov. Minnesota had a 5-on-3 for 1:19 midway through the third period, but the Panthers killed off both penalties. The Wild took a 1-0 lead on Brodins power-play goal in the second. His slap shot from the point was deflected by Floridas Jesse Winchester and past Thomas at 4:05. It was the 10th power-play goal for the Wild this season. NOTES: Thomas made his second start for the Panthers after missing four games due to a groin injury. He lost 3-2 on Thursday to the Boston Bruins, his former team. … Panthers C Nick Bjugstad, a 2010 prep Mr. Minnesota hockey winner, faced his hometown team for the first time. … Minnesota LW Dany Heatleys second-period assist was his second point this season. Police leaflets seen by an Associated Press reporter at a central Sochi hotel on Tuesday contain warnings about three potential suicide bombers. A police letter said that one of them, Ruzanna Ibragimova, a 22-year-old widow of an Islamic militant, was at large in Sochi.BUFFALO, N.Y. - These arent sunny days for the Buffalo Sabres. Theyre off to an NHL-worst 2-10-1 start, have two players currently suspended and Sunday night traded star scorer Thomas Vanek to the New York Islanders. But longtime general manager Darcy Regier doesnt want to consider himself under pressure, despite his current situation. “I dont do well with that word,” Regier said. “I think theres a better word. Is it a bigger challenge? Yeah. Id substitute the word challenge for pressure.” As far as challenges go, its a monumental one. Regier is in the midst of trying to rebuild a roster around a young core without losing the support of fans, ownership and his veteran players. Trading Vanek was another step in that process, which could include shipping out franchise goaltender Ryan Miller and others before the March trade deadline. Its up to Regier get the best return out of such moves. “If youre under so much pressure, its paralysing, so you cant operate that way,” he said. “You have to operate as though its a challenge and its something that you have to get done as a part of our team thats working on this. And you have to find the enjoyment in doing your work.” Its not enjoyable for Regier or any man in his position to hear home fans chanting for him to be fired. But with Buffalo in the Atlantic Division basement after failing to qualify for the playoffs the past two years, that frustrated sentiment is certainly expected. Lindy Ruff, who coached the Sabres for 14 full seasons before being fired in the middle of 2013, gets it. “I understand where theyre at,” said Ruff, whose Dallas Stars were in Buffalo to face the Sabres on Monday night. “Its tough to see where the team is at in the standings, but I watch how these players play and how some of the young players play and I think theres a lot of promise there.” Its a long rebuild, and one Vanek told reporters in Uniondale, N.Y., that he didnt really want to be a part of. Regier knew Vanek would not re-sign, so he took a major step toward the future by acquiring winger Matt Moulson, a first-round pick in 2014 and a second-rounder in 2015 from the Islanders. “I dont want to show any lack of respect to our fans, but internally its just doing the work and focusing on what our plan is and trying to execute it as well and as soon as possible,” he said. “I dont love where we are. I love what were doing and I believe in the direction were going in.” That plan includes stockpiling draft picks. The Sabres have 17 first or second-round picks from 2012 through 2015, the most in their history, something that is by design. Buffalos two first-round picks from 2012, Mikhail Grigorenko and Zemgus Girgensons, and 2013, Rasmus Ristolainen and Nikita Zadorov, are all getting NHL experience right now. Thanks to the trades of Vanek to the Islanders, Jason Pominville to the Minnesota Wild and Robyn Regehr to the Los Angeles Kings, the Sabres have two first-round picks and three second-rounders in Junes draft, and one first and three thirds in 2015. “With where our hockey club is the first and second-round picks are important,” Regier said. “Whether we use the picks to select players at the draft orr whether we use them to continue to improve the hockey club as we go forward through this season is yet to be determined.dddddddddddd” Its also yet to be determined how many early picks the Sabres will have by the time theyre done dealing. Like Vanek, Moulson is a pending unrestricted free agent, so its very realistic to think he goes to a contender by the deadline in exchange for more selections and/or prospects. Moulson isnt worrying about that right now, preferring a “day-to-day” approach. “Being from Mississauga Im well-acquainted with Buffalo. I used to love coming to Bills games,” he said. “Its a great city and who knows, it could be for a long time. Well see what they have in store.” Of course the biggest question surrounding the Sabres roster has to do with Miller, the 33-year-old goalie who has been a franchise cornerstone since he became the starter in 2005-06. Miller is in the final season of a US$31.25-million, five-year deal and figures to generate significant interest in the trade market. “I think any time a player plays better, you get more and when he plays poor, you get less,” Regier said. “I think that will happen. I think its obviously good for our organization, its great for Ryan and it means a lot.” Miller has a no-trade clause that allows him to block a move to eight teams. Asked if he had received any inquiries about Miller, Regier said: “I probably talk to a third of the league of my counterparts on a weekly basis. You end up talking about a lot of things.” Impending free-agents Steve Ott, Cody McCormick and Henrik Tallinder could be talked about, too. What the Vanek trade showed is that the Sabres are open for business, and players know it. “Everybodys job is kind of up in the air right now,” said Ott, who became the full-time captain after the trade. “I dont think anybody has a free pass in trying to rebuild and I guess you could say restructure the whole organization and thats something right now we can only control what you can control as a player, and thats something Im planning on continuing to preach to the team.” Regier said its “too early” to know what value veterans could have in the coming months. “Teams, I think theyre dealing with a very heavy October schedule, which is a little bit unusual that were getting because of the Olympics,” he said. “There are quite a few injuries around the league, so in some cases theyre waiting for players to get back, get healthy and get back before they start to assess what their needs are. But I would also say that theres probably more conversations now than there have been in the past.” Regiers focus is on getting younger and relying on his scouting staff to find the next-generation versions of Vanek, Pominville, Regehr and others. Its very different from the task of building and retooling a playoff team. “Its a process that you work through,” Regier said. “And it is exciting when you can get young players and you can see them grow. The hard part is when you dont win games while theyre growing, and it makes it difficult. But the nature of this business is short-term pressures and its a long-term plan that is going to get it done.” cheap nfl jerseys cheap jerseys ’ ’ ’

ST. LOUIS — Arizona shortstop Chris Owings threw wildly to the plate on a bases-loaded grounder in the 12th inning, allowing Matt Holliday to score the winning run in the St. Louis Cardinals 3-2 victory over the Arizona Diamondbacks on Wednesday night. The Cardinals cut down the go-ahead run at the plate in the 10th on Daniel Descalsos perfect relay throw from down the left field line to nail Ender Inciarte trying to score from first on Paul Goldschmidts two-out double. Holliday walked off Trevor Cahill (1-6) to start the 12th. Matt Adams doubled and Yadier Molina was walked intentionally. Allen Craig hit a grounder and Owings had plenty of time for a force play of the plate but his throw eluded catcher Miguel Montero. Seth Maness (2-2) allowed a hit in the 12th for the Cardinals, who persevered long after Michael Wacha was chased early by a foul ball lined off his pitching elbow while sitting in the dugout. Jason Motte worked 1 2-3 scoreless innings in his first appearance since the 2012 post-season. He got help from Holliday, Descalso and Molina on that nifty relay. The Cardinals left the bases loaded in the bottom of the 10th against rookie Evan Marshall, but couldnt push across the winning run. Wacha allowed two hits in six scoreless innings and made two outstanding defensive plays before Adams liner forced an early exit after 88 pitches. The team said Wacha, the NLCS MVP last fall, had a bruise and was removed for precautionary reasons. Gerardo Parras two-run homer off Carlos Martinez put the Diamondbacks up 2-1 in the eighth, their first runs in 17 innings in the series after Adam Wainwrights one-hitter Tuesday. Pinch-hitter Jon Jays sacrifice fly off Brad Ziegler tied it in the bottom half. Wacha snared Martin Prados liner right back at him on instincts, throwing his glove up on the follow-through. He foiled a squeeze attempt by Arizona starter Brandon McCarthy later in the fifth, gloving the bunt in front of the plate and shovelling the ball to Molina at the plate in time to catch Cody Ross. The Diamondbacks unsuccessfully challenged, lobbying for an obstruction call at the plate. Martinez gave up the go-ahead run on a wild pitch in a loss to Atlanta on Sunday and has surrendered seven runs in 7 2-3 innings his last nine outings. Ziegler was scored upon for just the second time in his last 23 appearances. The Cardinals won a challenge and perhaps saved a run in the second when Montero was ruled out attempting to steal with one out. The next batter, Prado, singled. Molina had two hits, giving him 14 the first eight games of a nine-game home stand. NOTES: Rock n roll Hall of Famer Chuck Berry, 87 and a St. Louis resident, threw out the first pitch. … Lance Lynn (5-2, 3.67) faces Wade Miley (3-4, 4.94) to end a nine-game home stand. Lynn is 2-0 with a 2.37 ERA against Arizona and 20-8 lifetime at home. Miley is 2-0 with a 3.00 ERA in five road starts this year. … Opponents are 8 for 19 attempting to steal against Molina. … In Wachas 10 starts, hes allowed two or fewer runs six times. … Cardinals SS Jhonny Peralta, 1 for 21 against McCarthy, did not start. … Arizona 2B Aaron Hill returned after missing three games with shoulder soreness and was 0 for 5. The French driver made it through the first two qualifying rounds and into the Fast Six. KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Georges Niang walked off the floor in the closing minutes with a bloody towel pressed tightly to his forehead, pumping his fist and riling up the Iowa State fans in the Sprint Center. Turns out he was just jumpstarting the celebration. Niang scored 25 points before leaving with that gash above his right eye, and the No. 16 Cyclones held on down the stretch to beat No. 10 Kansas 94-83 Friday night and reach their first Big 12 tournament title game since 2000. “We love competing for championships,” Niang said later, a bandage over his wound. “Coach says take it one day at a time, but the Big 12 championship is one day away from us.” DeAndre Kane had five 3-pointers and scored 20 points, and Big 12 player of the year Melvin Ejim added 19 points for the fourth-seeded Cyclones (25-8), who will play for just their second tournament title Saturday night against the winner of Texas-Baylor. The victory for Iowa State represented its first in four tries against Kansas in the Big 12 tournament, and its first over the Jayhawks in Kansas City since March 10, 1996, when the schools were still part of the Big Eight. It also allowed Iowa State to match its 2001 team for the second-most wins in school history, trailing only the 32 wins piled up by the 2000 team. Incidentally, it was that team that won the Cyclones only Big 12 tournament title. “Its a great win for us, for the fact it gives us confidence we can compete with anyone in the nation,” Cyclones coach Fred Hoiberg said. “It was good to finally get one of these after struggling to close out games against Kansas the past few years.” Relying on some hot outside shooting, Iowa State took charge in the second half, and then held on as the top-seeded Jayhawks (24-9) tried to make a late run to get back into the game. Perry Ellis led Kansas with 30 points. Andrew Wiggins finished with 22. The Jayhawks again were playing without 7-footer Joel Embiid, the leagues defensive player of the year, and his rim-protecting presence was sorely missed. The freshman has a stress fracture in his back and is likely out until at least the second weekend of the NCAA tournament. “Joel not being in there, he could probably guard Niang better,” Kaansas coach Bill Self said, “but I think it was more a collection of everybody rather than just one individual.dddddddddddd” The Sprint Center was packed to the rafters with fans eager to see whether Iowa State could finally end its five-game losing streak against the Jayhawks, or whether Kansas could burnish what it hoped would be a resume worthy of a No. 1 seed in the NCAA tournament. The teams got after it right from the tip, racing up and down the floor in what amounted to a series of 94-foot wind sprints. Iowa State got the better of it early, forging a 23-16 lead, but the Jayhawks countered with a brutally efficient 20-3 charge to take control. Things got so intense that the normally placid Hoiberg was rung up with a technical foul after Kane appeared to be hammered on the way to the basket and no foul was called. “I used a bad word,” Hoiberg said sheepishly. “Im not going to say I didnt.” The Jayhawks lead was also short-lived. Kane started the comeback by converting a three-point play, Ejim and Niang went to work inside, and the Cyclones tied it 46-all in the closing minutes of the first half when Kane knocked down another shot from the corner. Their hot perimeter shooting continued in the second half, when the Cyclones turned a 48-46 deficit into a 66-57 lead, the last points in the run on a deep ball from Naz Long. By that point, Iowa State was 11 of 16 from the 3-point line. “We were on our heels defensively throughout the game,” Ellis said. “I felt in the first half we did a lot better. In the second half, we let too many straight-line drives to the basket.” The Jayhawks eventually extended their defence to the perimeter, and thats when Iowa State started going to the basket again. Niang scored four straight baskets for Iowa State during one stretch that made it 81-72, and scored on three straight trips to make it 86-74. The lead never got much smaller, even after Niang was whacked in the face during a scrum under the basket, prompting him to start the party for the Iowa State fans in attendance. “We felt like we had these guys in the second half,” Niang said. “We came out and threw the first punch and from there it was clear skies.” cheap nfl jerseys cheap jerseys ’ ’ ’

AUGUSTA, Ga. – One of golfs most exciting players squeezed most of the drama out of the Masters on Sunday. Thats just fine with Bubba Watson. All he cared about was slipping into that green jacket. Instead of hitting a 40-yard hook out of a forest of Georgia pines — the signature shot in his playoff victory two years ago — the final act Sunday at Augusta National took place on the 18th green. Watson had a three-shot lead and consulted with his caddie on a 15-foot birdie putt. “I went over to him and I said, Im not very good at math, but weve got four putts, right?” Watson said. This was more about great golf than Bubba golf. Watson kept his poise during an early burst of birdies from 20-year-old Jordan Spieth, turned the tournament in his favour with consecutive two-shot swings to close out the front nine, and coasted to a 3-under 69 to win the Masters by three shots over Spieth and Jonas Blixt of Sweden. “Small-town guy named Bubba now has two green jackets,” Watson said. “Its pretty wild.” Watson made it look routine over the final hour. On a Sunday when Spieth was trying to become the youngest winner in Masters history and 50-year-old Miguel Angel Jimenez had a chance to become the oldest major champion, Watson turned in another masterpiece and joined an elite group as the 17th player to win multiple Masters. Surprisingly for Augusta, the most compelling action was on the front nine. His only nervous moment was a drive so mammoth around the corner on the 13th hole that it clipped a few trees and still went some 360 yards, leaving just a sand wedge into the par 5. That was his lone birdie on the back nine. No one got closer than three shots the rest of the way. “The shot out of the woods made me famous,” Watson said. “But this one was a lot better for me and my nerves.” This was nothing like the Masters he won two years ago, especially when it was over. His wife and newly adopted son were home in Florida in 2012 when Watson made four straight birdies on the back nine and won on the second playoff hole with his great escape out of the trees. When he tapped in for par on 18, there was 2-year-old Caleb — decked out in a green-and-white striped Masters shirt and green tennis shoes — walking toward him. Watson had tears streaming down his face when he scooped him up, a prize as great as the green jacket. “Seeing him back there … what an amazing feeling as a parent,” he said. “And then throw on the green jacket on top of it just changes everything.” After high-fiving the crowd on his way to sign his card, Watson returned to Butler Cabin to take back that green jacket after slipping it on Adam Scott a year ago. “After giving it away last year, I wanted it back,” Watson said. “I told Adam we could just swap it back and forth every year.” Spieth could only watch from the side of the green. He dazzled the massive crowd early by holing out for birdie from the front bunker on No. 4, and making back-to-back birdies to build a two-shot lead through seven holes. Bidding to become the first player in 35 years to win a green jacket in his first try, Spieth looked to be well on his way. But he three-putted for bogey on No. 8 — the first 6 on his card all week — as Watson got up-and-down for birdie to tie for the lead. Spieth then made a rookie mistake, leaving his approach below the flagstick on No. 9 and watching it roll back into the fairway, setting up another bogey and two-shot swing. Whatever prayer he had might have ended at Amen Corner. His tee shot on No. 12 found Raes Creek. He missed a short birdie attempt on the 13th. Watson was too powerful, too experienced, too tough to beat. Spieth closed with six pars for a 72 and tied for second with Blixt, who never went away but never really threatened. Blixt shot a 71. “Obviously, Ive worked my whole life to lead Augusta on Sunday. And although I feel like its very early in my career, and Ill have more chances, its a stinger,” Spieth said. Watson finished at 8-under 280 and goes to a career-best No. 4 in the world. Mike Weir of Brights Grove, Ont., shot a final-round 73 and finished 9 over in a tie for 44th. Jimenez, the ageless wonder from Spain, shot 71 and finished alone in fourth. Matt Kuchar lost a share of the lead with a four-putt double bogey on the fourth hole and never challenged again. He closed with a 74 and tied for fifth with Rickie Fowler (73). Nine players were separated by three shots at the start of the final round only for this to turn into a two-man show. For the opening two hours, it was anything but dull. After trading pars on the opening hole, either Watson or Spieth — sometimes both — made birdie or bogey over the next nine holes. Spieth holed out from a bunker for birdie on the tough par-3 fourth. He made back-to-back birdies with a 12-foot putt on the seventh for a two-shot lead. Two holes to close out the back nine changed everything. Amen Corner swung the Masters in Watsons favour for good. Watson won for the second time this year, and his second major puts him at the top of the Ryder Cup standings. He was guided all week by a simple game plan of hitting fairways and greens, and he was calmed by knowing that regardless of how it turned out, he still had a green jacket. Now he has two of them. Millers Crossing Mike Harrington of The Buffalo News writes that netminder Ryan Miller is unsure about his future with the Sabres. Heading into Wednesdays game against the Pittsburgh Penguins, Miller said, “anything is possible” when pondering if it was his last game in Buffalo. Asked point-blank by The Buffalo News if hes told the Sabres he wants out – or told them hes all-in to talk about a contract extension – Miller remained elusive. “Thats not really something I want to discuss with you guys,” he said. "Its a private conversation about a business transaction. Really, thats what it comes down to. Im waiting to see kind of what the plans are around here. That would kind of give a little more indication. “They cant execute anything they might be planning until some time passes, where they make some trades or they have some kind of indication whats going to happen. Even then, theres no guarantee theyre going to get everything they want. Its just kind of well wait and see.” Harrington also wrote that Sabres GM Tim Murray pretty much confirmed that hes in limbo on dealing Miller as well. Murray said the Sabres are studying options all over their roster but the scuttlebutt around the league is theyre getting plenty of inquiries on pending unrestricted free agents Miller, Steve Ott and Matt Moulson, as well as interest in defenceman Henrik Tallinder. “;There are players on the team were certainly going to go forward with, young guys that they fit what we want to do,” Murray said.dddddddddddd “In saying that, if a team calls and they absolutely knock your socks off, then I guess Ive told a fib by saying were going to go forward with a certain player and Ive traded him. I guess well see what other teams have to say.” Moving Mike? I think its important just to focus on your game. I have some things that I need to continue to get better at, and thats something that Im trying to focus on right now, trying to help this team win games, and hopefully, I can do that heading towards the stretch here.” Deep Freeze Joe Haggerty of Comcast Sportsnet tweeted out that Boston Bruins GM Peter Chiarelli has had trade talks but doesnt see them making any deals before the Olympic roster freeze. SAN ANTONIO — North Carolina had 1.6 seconds to score and avoid another early NCAA tournament exit, but instead spent that precious time trying to call timeout. A fittingly frustrating end to a frustrating Tar Heels season. With coach Roy Williams jumping and gesticulating for a timeout, the No. 6 seed Tar Heels inbounded the ball to Nate Britt who dribbled past midcourt as time expired, ousting them in the third round for a second consecutive season in a 85-83 loss to Iowa State on Sunday. Officials huddled for several minutes reviewing the clock on replays before confirming that the game was over. Williams — who collapsed his hands on his knees as Britt surged toward him — then shook Iowa State coach Fred Hoibergs hand as North Carolina began absorbing the heartbreaker. “We made some mistakes. We practice all the time that situation for five guys to be calling timeout, and Im supposed to be calling timeout, and I was calling timeout,” Williams said. "Referees didnt recognize it. We practice those scenarios, so we made mistakes. " Iowa States DeAndre Kane did exactly as his coach had instructed, driving for a layup with 1.6 seconds left that gave the Cyclones the lead. His twisting shot put Iowa State in the Sweet 16 for the first time since 2000. “Hes been our Mariano Rivera. Hes been our closer all throughout this season,” Iowa State coach Fred Hoiberg said. Now the No. 3 seed Cyclones (28-7) are headed to the home of the former Yankees star, New York City, where they will play No. 7 seed Connecticut in the East Regional semifinals next week. The No. 6 seed Tar Heels (24-10) are gone in the NCAA tournaments opening weekend for the first time in consecutive seasons under Williams, who choked back tears following the end of his 10th season in Chapel Hill. “Lets not anybody lay it on the officials or anything like that. We didnt call the timeout with 1.6 seconds to play,” Williams said. Britt said he thought North Carolina got the timeout before the buzzer. “When I looked up at the clock I saw one-point-something time left,” he said. “I saw staff screaming and trying to call timeout.” Kane finished with 24 points and 10 rebounds. It was just the kind of big game the Cyclones needed without forward Georges Niang, who broke his foot in Fridays win against North Carolina Central. The 6-foot-7 sophomore sat on the bench wearing a bulky boot while the Cyclones tried their best without their third-leading scorer and tallest starter. Kane said the last possession called for him to attack the basket, unless North Carolina defenders swarmed him as he penetrated. “But nobody helped, and I made an acrobatic shot and it went in,” Kane said. Marcus Paige led North Carolina with 19 points and Kennedy Meeks had 15 points and 13 rebounds. But North Carolina played nearly the entire game without forward Brice Johnson, who sprained ankle in the opening minutes. The team said X-rays were negative, but the Tar Heels third-leading scorer never returned. The Tar Heels crave a fast pace, and — after dealing with the grind-it-out style of recent opponents — Williams and Paige had spoken of relishing the chance to finally hit the gas against the similarly up-tempo Cyclones. But this was no track meet. Undersized Iowa State bottled up the Tar Heels before they could run and bombarded them with 3-pointers (12 of 26) instead of quick baskets. The first dunk came from Kane, not the high-flying Tar Heels, and not until 12 minutes into the game after a handful of bungled North Carolina fast breaks. Niangs injury left Hoiberg with a tough choice: go small with his best remaining five or a put a little-used big man in place of his star sophomore. He opted for size over another shooter, giving 6-foot-8 forward Daniel Edozie his first career start. Edozie missed the only two shots he tried and grabbed four rebounds. But Johnsons bum ankle reduced North Carolinas size advantage. Johnson, who came in averaging 10.6 points and is the Tar Heels second-leading rebounder, tumbled to the floor with North Carolina up 12-7. He sat on the bench before hobbling to the locker room. Coincidental or not, the Cyclones got hot the moment Johnson left the game. They shook off a 1-for-10 start from the floor and erased a seven-point deficit in less than 1 1/2 minutes. After that, neither team led by more than single digits. “Once Georges got injured people didnt think that we had enough to pull out this win,” forward Dustin Hogue said. “This goes to show that we have depth and we have heart. With enough heart you can beat anybody.” . — Reginas Mark McMorris is taking home a silver medal and a fractured rib from Saturdays slopestyle event at the Winter X Games. LUCIE, Fla.BALTIMORE – Steve Lombardozzi tripled and scored on a single by David Lough in the 12th inning, giving the Baltimore Orioles a 2-1 victory over the Toronto Blue Jays on Saturday night. Toronto trailed 1-0 with two outs in the ninth when Colby Rasmus hit a solo homer off Tommy Hunter on a 1-2 pitch. After nearly going around on a check swing one pitch earlier, Rasmus drove a 98 mph fastball into the right-field seats. In the 12th, Lombardozzi hit a one-out drive to centre off Todd Redmond (0-1) before Lough sliced an opposite-field liner to left. As soon as Lombardozzi crossed the plate, the Orioles sprinted from the dugout to embrace Lough, who scored Baltimores other run five innings earlier. Zach Britton (2-0) got the win with two hitless innings of relief. It was the second straight low-scoring affair between two AL East foes known for their offensive prowess. On Friday night, Toronto scored two unearned runs in a 2-0 victory In this one, neither starter allowed a run and neither got a victory for the effort. Bud Norris gave up five hits and three walks over seven innings for Baltimore and was poised to earn his first win of the season before Rasmus connected in the ninth. Drew Hutchison handcuffed the Orioles on four hits over six innings, walking two and striking out five. After Hutchison left, the Orioles struck in the seventh against right-hander Neil Wagner. Lough singled with two outs before rookie Jonathan Schoop, the No. 9 hitter, lined a 3-2 pitch into the alley in right-centre for an RBI double. Evan Meek protected the lead in the eighth, but Hunter gave it away for his firsst blown save in four tries this season.dddddddddddd The game featured the first replay challenge at Camden Yards. In the fourth inning, Lombardozzi reached on a grounder when umpire Chris Conroy ruled that a throw from Hutchison pulled first baseman Edwin Encarnacion off the bag. Toronto manager John Gibbons challenged the call, and after a delay of 2 minutes, 38 seconds, the decision stood. Lough followed by hitting into an inning-ending double play. Both teams threatened in the third. Toronto put runners at the corners with one out before Maicer Izturis hit a short flyball and Jose Bautista struck out. In the bottom half, Hutchison struck out Chris Davis and Adam Jones after giving up successive one-out singles to Nick Markakis and Nelson Cruz. LAKE FOREST, Ill. – The Chicago Bears terminated defensive lineman Israel Idonijes contract Thursday. The Bears also signed undrafted free-agent defensive end Jamil Merrell and linebacker Conor ONeill, and waived safety Sean Cattouse, quarterback Jerrod Johnson and tight end Fendi Onobun. Idonije, a product of the University of Manitoba, played for Detroit last season after nine years with the Bears. In 149 career games, he has 273 tackles, 29 sacks, 40 tackles for losses, six forced fumbles, six fumble recoveries, 36 special teams tackles and eight blocked kicks. Merrill played at Rutgers, and ONeill at Wisconsin. cheap nfl jerseys . Only Manchester City has been more lethal in front of goal, with the team — a point behind Liverpool and Arsenal in third — scoring 51 goals in 17 games.PITTSBURGH — The Florida Marlins had a good time with a rare offensive outburst. Omar Infante and Logan Morrison both homered during a nine-run third inning and the Marlins pounded out 22 hits in a 13-4 rout of the Pittsburgh Pirates on Friday night. Infante drove in five runs, adding a solo shot in the first, while Morrison had four hits and three RBIs. The Marlins had a club-record 10 hits in the third. Morrison and Bryan Petersen each had two hits in the inning as Florida broke the record of nine, which had been done four times, most recently on Sept. 17, 2001, at Montreal. The 13 runs tied a season high, set July 16 against the Cubs at Chicago. The Marlins beat the Pirates for the 12th time in the last 14 meetings. “Im pretty sure this happens every week for the Yankees and the Red Sox, but it doesnt for us,” Morrison said. “It was a lot of fun.” And it certainly made for a good start to the Marlins 11-game, 10-day road trip. “I was thinking lets save some runs for the rest of trip,” said manager Jack McKeon, whose team entered the day 11th in the NL in runs scored. “They came out swinging, Ill tell you that.” Infante got an assist on his three-run homer in the third when it bounced off the glove of left fielder Alex Presley, who was on the warning track, and into the bleachers. “It was a freak thing and I really dont have an explanation for it,” Presley said. “I should catch it in my mind. It happened. Hopefully not again, though.” The homer stretched the Marlins lead to 9-1. “(Infante) lit the fire when he hit the three-run homer,” McKeon said. “I thought we were in pretty good shape then.” Petersen, Emilio Bonifacio, Gaby Sanchez, Donnie Murphy, John Buck and winning pitcher Ricky Nolasco (10-10) all finished with two hits for the Marlins. Ross Ohlendorf (0-2) had his string of winless starts reach 15 as he was rocked for six runs on 10 hits in two-plus innings. He needed 54 pitches to record six outs. “Almost all of the hits came off fastballs,” Ohlendorf said. “Stuff-wise, I wasnt real great but location was the main thing, especially in the third inning. They were just very hittable pitches in terms of being up in the zone and in the middle of the plate, too.” Pedro Ciriaco had two hits and two RBIs for the Pirates. Presley and Ryan Doumit also had two hits apiece. Nolascos streak of 22 scoreless innings against the Pirates ended in the second inning when Doumit doubled and scored on Ciriacos single to draw Pittsburgh within 2-1. Florida then countered with its big third to put away the game. “Its good to get that kind of support because you can just go out, feed strikes, get guys out and get our guys back in the dugout as quickly as possible,”; Nolasco said.dddddddddddd Floridas third inning came with a downside, though, as both right fielder Mike Stanton and first baseman Jose Lopez strained right hamstrings while running out hits and were forced to leave the game. Stanton, who has been bothered by hamstring stiffness since spring training, was making his first start since Sept. 3. Stanton said he was fine and could have stayed in the game, but McKeon said, “If hes OK, then that effort wasnt acceptable. I didnt want to take the chance to hurt people. If I did that, the Humane Society would be after me.” Stanton countered by saying, “Thats the speed I have right now.” Morrison, the left fielder, was shaken up when he slid into the side wall to catch Garrett Jones fly ball in the eighth inning but stayed in the game. “I think we had as much damage done to us as we did to (Pittsburgh),” Morrison, alluding to the injuries. Ohlendorf has not won since July 2, 2010, against Philadelphia and is tied with Cincinnatis Dontrelle Willis for the longest active winless streak. Ohlendorf has been limited to six starts this season because of shoulder problems. Florida took a 2-0 lead against Ohlendorf as Infante hit a solo home run down the left-field line in the first and doubled home Nolasco, who had singled, in the second. The Marlins big third inning was started by Stanton, who singled. Murphy pinch ran, went to third on Morrisons double and scored on a throwing error by right fielder Ryan Ludwick. Lopez, Buck, Petersen and Nolasco followed with consecutive singles, with Lopezs and Nolascos driving in runs. Bonifacio then hit a sacrifice fly, Infante hit his defence-aided, three-run blast and Morrison added his his two-run homer. Florida made it 13-1 in the fifth as Murphy tripled and scored on Morrisons single before Buck hit a run-scoring single. Notes: Florida CF Mike Cameron missed his second straight game with tightness in his right hamstring and said he did not anticipate returning to the lineup any time soon. … Pittsburgh RHP Jeff Karstens will return to the rotation Tuesday against St. Louis after missing two starts because of shoulder fatigue. … Pirates LHP Jeff Locke will make his major league debut Saturday night when he faces RHP Anibal Sanchez (7-7, 3.83) in the middle game of the three-game series. Locke, 23, was a combined 8-10 with a 3.70 ERA in 28 games with double-A Altoona and triple-A Indianapolis. Though Sanchez has struck out a career-high 173 batters in 171 1-3 innings this season, he has only one win in his last 15 starts. Five Pittsburgh prospects have joined the club for the weekend but wont be placed on the active roster: Indianapolis LHP Justin Wilson, 1B Matt Hague and OF Gorkys Hernandez and Altoona RHPs Kyle McPherson and Bryan Morris. MELBOURNE, Australia — Torontos Daniel Nestor and French partner Kristina Mladenovic won the Australian Open mixed doubles title Sunday over Indias Sania Mirza and Romanian Horia Tecau 6-3, 6-2. The 58-minute victory marks the fourth mixed title for the 41-year-old Nestor and second for his team in the last three grand slams. He and Mladenovic won the Wimbledon title last summer after finishing runner-up at the French Open eight months ago. “Weve been playing our best tennis here,” said Nestor. "Its great to win this title. “I have what I believe is the best partner in mixed. Kristina helps me out and I have to cover less of the court — thats good at my age.” Nestor now owns three Melbourne mixed titles, winning with Elena Likhovtseva in 2007 and repeating three years ago with Slovenian Katerina Srebotnik. Nestor and Mladenovic beat Mirza and Tecau at Wimbledon last summer on the way to their title together. Nestors team beat the sixth seeds with five aces 14 winners, 24 unforced errors and four breaks of serve. Mladenovic converted on a third match point as she sent a passing shot past Tecau to take the victory. “Australias a great place to be at this time of year,” Nestor said of a match played in 26 Celsius summer conditions, "Its certainly a bit colder in Canada. “Leaving home at around Christmas time is always a blessing.” Nestor was accompanied on his trip by his family, which had to return home this week for school. This week, topics cover the Blue Jays rotation, the futures John Gibbons and Alex Anthopoulos, protecting pitchers and a bonus question on his predictions for the MLB playoffs.ANAHEIM, Calif. – The Seattle Mariners quickly answered those critics who thought Robinson Cano wouldnt have enough support in the lineup to make a difference. James Paxton pitched seven scoreless innings of two-hit ball and Cano drove in his first run for the Mariners on Wednesday night in an 8-2 victory over the Los Angeles Angels, completing a three-game sweep in the teams first series under new manager Lloyd McClendon. “The last couple of years, a lot of us guys were younger and going through battles and learning some things,” first baseman Justin Smoak said. “Now its time for guys who have been here the last couple of years to step up.” Smoak, Mike Zunino and Corey Hart all homered for Seattle, which outscored the Angels 26-8 while sweeping a season-opening three-game set for only the second time in their 38-year history. The other time was in 1985, when they started out 6-0 at home against Oakland and Minnesota before losing 12 of their next 13. “We had a lot of confidence coming in,” Smoak said. “Weve got a great pitching staff. Paxton, Erasmo (Ramirez) and Felix (Hernandez) pitched their butts off and gave us a chance to win, and we were able to score some runs. Now we have to keep it going.” It was the first time the Angels were swept in a three-game series to start a season since 1992, by the Chicago White Sox at Anaheim. “Thats obviously not the way we wanted to come out and open this thing up,” said Angels third baseman David Freese. “They all count, but its a long season and well bounce back. Theres a lot of guys in this clubhouse that understand what a baseball season consists of, and sometimes this happens.” Paxton (1-0) threw 99 pitches in his fifth big league start and struck out nine, including Josh Hamilton all three times he faced him. Hamilton also struck out against Nector Noesi for the final out after Noesi game up Mike Trouts RBI triple and Freeses sacrifice fly. Paxton stranded a runner at third base in the first with the help of centre fielder Abraham Almonte, who raced in to make a sliding catch on Freeses sinking liner for the third out. He escaped another jam in the fourth by fanningg Hamilton and Howie Kendrick with two men on, then struck out the side in the fifth.dddddddddddd Paxton became the second pitcher in Mariners history to win four of his first five big league starts. The other was Michael Pineda, who did it in 2011. Paxton, a Canadian-born left-hander, was 3-0 with a 1.50 ERA four starts last September. “I just got in a groove and felt really good,” Paxton said. “Probably around the third inning, I kind of found my rhythm and everything was coming together really well for me.” Hector Santiago (0-1) was charged with four runs, four hits and three walks in five-plus innings. The 26-year-old left-hander, beginning his first full season as a starter, was acquired in December along with Tyler Skaggs from Arizona in a three-way trade with the Chicago White Sox that sent slugger Mark Trumbo to the Diamondbacks. Seattle scored 18 of their runs in this series with two outs. Cano, who left the New York Yankees after nine seasons to sign a 10-year, $240 million free agent contract, finished his first series in a Seattle uniform 5 for 11 with two intentional walks. “His presence definitely affects any lineup,” Freese said. “I mean, you look up and down that lineup and its a complete lineup.” Brad Miller, who homered twice for the Mariners in Tuesdays 8-3 win, legged out a double to right with two outs in the third and came home on Canos single. Miller drove in the second run with a two-out single in the fifth. The Mariners broke it open with four runs in the sixth, as Stefan Romero greeted Fernando Salas with an RBI double and Zunino hit his sixth big league homer. Smoak and Hart both homered with two outs in the ninth against Ernesto Frieri. NOTES: Santiagos only other start at Angel Stadium came with the White Sox on May 18, 2013, when he allowed three runs and four hits over 3 1-2 innings in a no-decision. … The Angels begin a four-game series Friday night at Houston. The Astros won the season series 10-9 last year, despite finishing a major league-worst and franchise-worst 51-111 after switching over from the NL to the AL. … Angels pitchers gave up 17 extra-base hits and 15 walks in the series. SOCHI, Russia — Canadian skip Jennifer Jones won Olympic gold Thursday, defeating Sweden 6-3 to complete her curling trophy case with an unbeaten run on the sports biggest stage. A steal of two in the ninth sealed the win over Swedish skip Margaretha Sigfridsson, who throws lead stones but calls the shots as skip. Jones has now added Olympic gold to the world championship she won in 2008 as well as four Canadian crowns. In the process, she has matched Canadian skip Kevin Martins feat of winning the Olympic crown with a perfect record. Its Canadas second womens curling gold. The late Sandra Schmirler won the first in Nagano, Japan, in 1998. Britains Eve Muirhead, the 2013 world champion, defeated Switzerlands Mirjam Ott 6-5 for the bronze medal earlier in the day. Team Canada coach Mike Babcock was in the stands to witness the Canadian win, as were several members of the Swedish hockey team. No Canada womens team has even won a world championship since Jones rink, without third Kaitlyn Lawes, claimed the crown in 2008. Jones beat Sigfridssons route in the round-robin en route to that title. Jones, Lawes, second Jill Officer and lead Dawn McEwen dispatched Muirhead in the semifinal after going 9-0 in the round-robin. Canada downed Sweden 9-3 on the second day of the Olympic curling competition, with the Swedes shaking hands with two ends left. It was a tough start for Officer and Lawes, who thumped her broom in disgust at one point. Jones, who opened with hammer, had to take one in the first end after some aggressive curling by the Swedes had the Canadian skip holding last rock with three Swedish stones in the house. Jones hit and stuck for the single. The Swedes tied it up, escaping with a single from a crowded house in the second. Lawes doubled off two Swedish rocks as the third was blanked. Canada capitalized in the fourth when Swedens Maria Prytz — throwing fourth — jammed on a double attempt with last rock and Jones drew for a deuce and a 3-1 lead. With Lawes and Officer struggling and Sweden holding hammer, Jones faced a house with three Swedish rocks counting as she threw her last stone. She hit and stuck, but leaving Sweden shot rock. Prytz tried to remove Canadian rocks for a big score but had to settle for two and a 3-3 tie. The sixth and seventh were blanked as the Swedes put rocks in the house and Canada cleaned them out. In the eighth, there was more action in the house. After freezes by Canada and Sweden, each team had a rock around the same distance from the button. Jones tried to draw for a possible two, happy to nudge the Swedish rock out of the way, but was short and Canada had to settle for one after a measurement. The Swedes went down 4-3 but high-fived because they had hammer. Jones nailed a pressure draw with her last rock of the ninth. That piled the pressure on Prytz, given the plethora of Canadian rocks in the house. The Swede wrecked her shot and Canada stole two. Prytz looked to the skies, as if wondering what she had to deserve such a fate. The Swedes have a rich history in curling at the Olympics, winning gold in 2006 and 2010 (via Anette Norberg) and bronze in 1998 (Elisabet Gustafson). Sigfridsson has lost four world championship finals: as third in 2002, lead in 2009 and as skip with her current team in 2012 and 2013. The Dutch, World Cup runners-up last year, rose to the top spot despite not playing last month. Spain lost 2-1 in a friendly to new No. 7 Italy. Netherlands coach Bert van Marwijk welcomed his nations status as the seventh country to lead the table in its 18-year history. “We know it is tough to reach first place, but tougher still to stay there. That is a great challenge,” Van Marwijk said. Meanwhile, Canada is up three spots to 102nd overall. The Canadian squad begins the next phase of World Cup qualifying next month. Canada hosts St. Lucia on Sept. 2, Puerto Rico on Oct. 11 and St. Kitts and Nevis on Nov. 15. Canadas away games are Sept. 6 in Puerto Rico, Oct. 7 in St. Lucia, and Nov. 11 in St. Kitts and Nevis. The rankings take results across four years into account and have often proved difficult for fans to understand. The current standings include points gained at the 2008 European Championship, which Spain also won. The Netherlands lost in the quarter-finals. Van Marwijkk said his teams main focus remains qualifying for Euro 2012 in Poland and Ukraine.dddddddddddd “We have to stay realistic. This is a snapshot, not a tangible prize,” he said. Europe holds the top four places, with Germany at No. 3 and England rising two places to No. 4 after also not playing. Its friendly against the Netherlands was cancelled due to riots in London. Copa America winner Uruguay stays at No. 5 but heads Brazil, which dropped to sixth place after losing 3-2 in Germany. Ivory Coast is the top African country at No. 15, tied with Japan, the best of the Asian nations. Gold Cup winner Mexico leads CONCACAF teams at No. 20. The United States rises two to No. 28. New Zealand is unchanged at No. 94 as the best from Oceania. A total of 76 matches counted toward the latest rankings, including 60 friendlies and 15 Asian qualifiers for the 2014 World Cup in Brazil. Vietnam moved up 15 places to No. 129 after beating Qatar 2-1 in the return match of a qualifier which cost Qatar coach Milovan Rajevac his job. ORLANDO, Florida – Opening the tournament in style, the Montreal Impact topped Fluminense FC U23 1-0 on Wednesday night at the ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex, in its first game of the Walt Disney World Pro Soccer Classic. Midfielder Sanna Nyassi scored the lone goal. With a first half largely dominated by the Impact, the games first goal came in the 18th minute when defender Hassoun Camara found the ball just inside the box, to the right side of goal. His left-footed shot was pushed away by the goalkeeper, but fell to Sanna Nyassi. The Gambian midfielder settled the ball before firing it off of the keeper and into the net. Lefèvre, Camara and Collen Warner helped goalkeeper Troy Perkins earn the shutout by making a number of solid defensive plays, especially in the first half. The second half saw a number of changes for the blue side, including all current or former field players from the Academy on the field at the same time: Wandrille Lefèvre, Karl W. Ouimette, Maxim Tissot, Zakaria Messoudi, Victor Ndiaye, Jérémy Gagnon-Laparé and Amine Meftouh. In total, 21 players saw action for the Impact in this first game of the tournament. The Impact is now 2-0 in preseason action, following a 2-1 victory on Sunday over Orlando City SC in a friendly. The Impact will play its next Disney Pro Classic matchups with the New York Red Bulls this Saturday, February 22 at 6pm and then versus Sporting Kansas City, next Wednesday, on February 26 at 8pm. The championship game is set for Saturday, March 1. All Impact games throughout the tournament are streamed live at impactmontreal.com. “It was a better game tonight,” said Impact head coach Frank Klopas. “We really pushed the play in the first. In the second, we gave some valuable experience to our young players and we managed to keep a clean sheet.” “It was a better game tonight, compared to the first one,” also said defender Hassoun Camara. “We had to be better physically and technically and we were today. We respected the game plan and now we have to grow from this game. I played with a little bit of pain but I keep working hard. I had some good runs down the flank but it was a collective effort tonight.” “We were stronger tonight compared to our first game,” said defender Wandrille Lefèvre. “We had goals in mind: win the game and keep a clean sheet. These are important elements that we want to improve compared to last year and we did it tonight.” Wholesale Jerseys From China . Darren Helm scored on Detroits sixth attempt in the shootout and then Jonas Gustavsson stopped Andrew Shaws shot, lifting the Detroit Red Wings to a 5-4 win over the Chicago Blackhawks on Wednesday night. “Were a little depleted, but we still have a great team and we showed that,” said Patrick Eaves, who had the second of his teams three goals in the shootout and a game-tying goal in the first period. “It was nice to get rewarded for playing well.” The Blackhawks faced Detroit for the first time since beating the Red Wings in overtime in Game 7 of their second-round series last year to complete a comeback from a 3-1 deficit. They are only scheduled to play one more time in the regular season because the Red Wings were moved to the Eastern Conference this season as part of the NHLs realignment. “Any time you play the Red Wings, its going to be an intense game given the rivalry and whats happened in the past,” Chicagos Patrick Kane said. “Theyre playing through some injuries and havent had any luck as of late in that area, but its still a dangerous team. Sometimes you get these young guys that come up from the minors, they want to prove themselves and prove they belong.” Chicago captain Jonathan Toews scored on his teams first attempt in the shootout and Patrick Sharp scored on the second before Kane was stopped with a chance to win a game the Blackhawks led 2-0 in the first period. “They played better as the game went along,” Toews said. Gustavsson, playing for the injured Jimmy Howard, made 31 saves in his first game in nearly a month. “It was a good test and I felt good,” said Gustavsson, who has been on injured reserve three times this season with a groin injury. “I didnt feel any pain.” Corey Crawford gave up four goals on the first 17 shots hhe faced and finished with 27 saves for the Blackhawks.dddddddddddd “We werent very good,” Chicago coach Joel Quenneville said. “They worked hard. They were a hard-working team.” Chicago took a 2-0 lead when Marian Hossa and Shaw scored 1:45 apart midway through the first period and it looked like the Red Wings were in trouble. Tomas Tatar, though, scored less than a minute later and Eaves tied the game at 2 late in the opening period. “To make it 2-1 was a key in the game,” Eaves said. Sharps slap shot just seconds into a power play early in the second put the Blackhawks ahead again, but Kyle Quincey responded 1:17 later in the period with a game-tying goal. Detroits Gustav Nyquist was set up perfectly in front of the net on a go-ahead goal off Henrik Zetterbergs third assist of the night after Justin Abdelkader hustled for loose puck in a corner. “Abby played hard and chased down the puck and set up Z,” Detroit coach Mike Babcock said. The Red Wings were without injured forwards Pavel Datsyuk, Johan Franzen, Daniel Alfredsson and Joakim Andersson. They did get defenceman Jonathan Ericsson in the lineup for the first time since Dec. 23 when he broke ribs in a game against the New York Islanders. “Getting Big E back made a huge difference for us matchup-wise,” Detroit coach Mike Babcock said. NOTES: Datsyuk missed his eighth straight game with a lower-body injury, but has begun to skate again and said he will “for sure” play for Russia has its captain next month at the Winter Olympics. … Crawford hadnt given up four goals since Dec. 5, 2013, since a 4-3 loss to Minnesota and had allowed five goals in two games earlier in the season. … Chicago was 9-0-1 in its previous 10 regular season games in Detroit. … Kane hasnt scored in 11 games, the longest streak without a goal since going 12 games without a goal during the 2008-09 season. … Detroit plays March 16 at Chicago. WASHINGTON — Dwyane Wade started his drive to the basket with a behind-the-back dribble at the free throw line, then followed with a 360-degree move in the paint and ended with a shot off the glass. The play started one of those poetry-in-motion runs, with fluid dribbles, spin moves and alley-oop passes to LeBron James. Wade went on to either score or get the assist on 20 straight Miami Heat points. Wade finished with 26 points, and James had 18 points and nine assists Friday night in the Heats 106-89 win over the Washington Wizards, a rebound victory on a road trip that had a tough start in Orlando two days earlier. “It was very fun,” Wade said. “Thats why we love to play this game. He makes me look good, so I think thats what the fans came to see. They love to see their favourite players do amazing things.” Wade and James combined to score Miamis last 18 points of the first half, including a pair of one-handed throw-down alley-oop Wade-to-James dunks during a 10-0 spurt. Coach Erik Spoelstra had no problem with the show — until the pair tried to get a little too fancy. “We want to be efficient, and thats the most important thing,” Spoelstra said. "And we were able to get some of those opportunities there in the second quarter. I think that last one was probably where we needed to be a little bit more judicious about it and try to get the score — there was also one of those in the fourth quarter. “We have a team that feeds off electric plays, and thats fine. Im not going to put the reins on that, so well continue to get better at that. We understand the importance of taking care of the ball.” As for James, he figures the alley-oop is not only a crowd-pleaser — its a high percentage shot. “I think were probably 90 per cent on the alley-oops this year,” James said. “Either him-to-me or me-to-him, so we dont have to be worried about getting too carried away.” Chris Bosh had 24 points and 11 rebounds, making for only the second time this season that he and Wade have scored 20-plus. The Heat bounced back from a 13-point loss at Orlando on Wednesday to improve to 1-1 on their six-game road trip, and they had the perfect foil: Miami has won six straight and 12 of 13 against the Wizards, and seven in a row in Washington. Spoelstra attributed the turnaround to a “real, objective, raw film session” Friday morning. “Thats what was needed. We couldnt just leave that game behind in Orlando,” the coach said. “All of us were disappointed about it.” JaVale McGee scored a season-high 24 points and had 13 rebounds to lead the Wizards (5-22), who are 3-7 since Randy Wittman replaced fired coach Flip Saunders. Nick Young scored 22 points for Washington, and John Wall had 15 points and tied his season high with 10 assists. Trevor Booker grabbed a career-high 15 rebounds. The Wizards stayed within shouting distance until the fourth quarter with some acrobatic plays of their own. The Heat led 52-42 after a first half that included a combined five alley-oop baskets and a few misfires. “Nobody wants to see that show going against you,” Wittman said. “I thought we had a little bit of a show of our own.” But McGee felt some of his teammates got a bit star-struck. “Sometimes, yeah. Sometimes, they see LeBron out there. They see D-Wade out there,” McGee said. “They say: Oh my God, hes going to work on them.” The comical highlight came late in the first half when Booker corralled a loose ball under the basket with no one around, but it slipped out of his hands as he went up for the dunk. He stared at his palms as he started upcourt, even as the Heat were racing ahead for one of those Wade-to-James dunks. Washington pulled within one after an 11-0 run in the third quarter, but the Heat responded with a 10-4 stretch that included a layup from Wade and a three-point play from James. “You can tell theyve played together a while,” Wittman said. “They find each other incredibly well.” Notes: Miami F Shane Battier scored a season-high 15 points. … Heat G Mario Chalmers returned after the Orlando loss with a sprained left hand, but he failed to score in 25 minutes. … Wizards F Rashard Lewis missed his third straight game with a sore left knee. … The Wizards had their first sellout of the season. Along with the greying hair and growing bald spot, they give the Canadian driver a professorial vibe. Its only reinforced when he begins to speak. In clear, crisp sentences spiced by that unmistakable French-Canadian accent, Villeneuve lays out his opinion on just about anything — especially when it comes to the Indy 500. He will talk about the latest generation of cars, lament the fact there is only one chassis manufacturer, and argue that spotters who are supposed to make the race safer have often had the opposite effect. Then hell talk about the speed and the danger. “Some younger drivers didnt grow up seeing racing as being dangerous,” said Villeneuve, who is back at the Indianapolis 500 after a 19-year absence. “They break their little finger and they are surprised. Its like, Be happy its only that.” Of course, Villeneuve forgets many of those younger drivers grew up watching him. James Hinchcliffe, a fellow Canadian, said his earliest memory of watching a race was 1995, when Villeneuve took advantage of a late penalty on Scott Goodyear to win the Indy 500. That was also the last time Villeneuve stepped into an Indy car at the iconic racetrack. At least, it was until this year. “Its cool to have him back,” Hinchcliffe said, “because hes obviously one of the guys I looked up to as a young driver, and one of the guys I never thought Id have a chance to race.” Villeneuve spent nearly two decades driving just about everything but an IndyCar. He won a Formula One title, tried his hand at NASCAR and drove at Le Mans. He dabbled in RallyCross and even raced V8 Supercars around the street circuits of Australia. But the lure of Indy started to tug him back. Villeneuve, who will start 27th on Sunday, watched with rapt attention last year as Tony Kanaan took the checkered flag. He was intrigued by the record number of lead changes, the way cars moved through the field and how stiff the competition had become. Villeneuve managed to land a ride with team owners Sam Schmidt and Rick Peterson, and will be part of a staable that includes Mikhail Aleshin and Simon Pagenaud on Sunday.dddddddddddd “If I jumped from F-1 to this again, it wouldnt be an issue,” Villeneuve said of the return to open-wheel racing, “but the first 20 laps, your eyes, your brain — its not used to those speeds, so it is a big shock. You have to get out, breath again, and then get back in and its like, All right. Business as usual.” His team may be an underfunded underdog, at least compared to heavyweights Penske, Ganassi and Andretti Autosport, and he may have struggled Friday in the final practice on Carb Day. But none of that will convince Villeneuve that he doesnt have a chance to win. “When I won here we were two laps down and we spent the whole race minding our own business,” he said. “Thats the key: You should mind your own business. Figure out what is happening with everyone else at the end. You need a little bit of luck, and then you need to see how it pans out. I just hope Im not one of those people who does something stupid.” Pagenaud was surprised to see his new teammate prepare for the race the moment he arrived in Indianapolis. Qualifying was almost an afterthought as Villeneuve gazed ahead to Sunday. “It actually makes me wonder why he focused so much on the race,” Pagenaud said with a wry grin. “Im sure hell come up with something in the race and Ill learn then.” If he does come up with something, Villeneuve could make history. The 43-year-old would break Al Unsers record of 17 years between victories that has stood since 1987. Even if he doesnt win, though, a good showing could prove invaluable. Villeneuve has dropped hints that he may be try to run the IndyCar series full-time next year, and that would turn the Indy 500 into quite an audition. “I had an opportunity to spend half an hour with Jacques in the garage area a week ago,” said Goodyear, now an analyst for ABC. "Through all the questions I was asking him, catching up with him, I asked him, Why come back to something that youve won, have great memories with? “He said, Racing is my oxygen. I need to race something.” cheap nfl jerseys cheap jerseys ’ ’ ’

NEW YORK — Doused for two days in the Bronx, the Yankees and Orioles headed down to Baltimore with a couple of things awaiting them. One, a good nights sleep. Two, a 60 per cent chance of rain. Mark Reynolds hit a tiebreaking single in the 11th inning after striking out four times and the Orioles outlasted New York 5-4 on Wednesday in another soggy game between two sleep-deprived teams. “Its been a struggle for us all year. Any win down the stretch is kind of icing on the cake for us,” Reynolds said. “Were going to try to go out and win every game down the stretch and make it tough on some of these teams trying to get to the playoffs.” Less than 11 hours after the Yankees completed a rain-delayed victory, the teams were back at it. The showers returned, too, though the game started on time and was never interrupted other than when the grounds crew needed to apply diamond dust to dry a soaked infield. Nolan Reimould hit a two-run homer off A.J. Burnett and the Orioles took advantage of four Yankees errors, two by fill-in shortstop Eduardo Nunez. Both teams looked sleepy and sluggish in a sloppy game — with good reason, too. With few options for a makeup date, they waited out a rain delay of 4 hours, 3 minutes on Tuesday night to play a game that ended at 2:15 a.m. Yankees players rushed home while the Orioles zipped back to their hotel to get a few precious hours of shuteye before heading back to the ballpark Wednesday morning for the 1:05 p.m. start. “We dont have to worry about making up this game, and thats a good thing,” New York manager Joe Girardi said. “But physically, its been a grind. Theres no doubt about it.” The Yankees tried to extend this one even longer, putting runners at the corners with two outs in the bottom of the 11th. Pinch-hitter Eric Chavez, batting for Nunez, hit a low, sharp liner toward the middle and shortstop Robert Andino went to the ground to knock it down. He shovelled to second to nip Curtis Granderson for the final out, ending the game after 4 hours, 23 minutes. “So many good things today,” Baltimore manager Buck Showalter said. “Robby came out there and played as good a game at shortstop as youll ever see played in these conditions, too. I cant tell you how tough that is out there.” Pedro Strop (1-1) worked 1 1-3 scoreless innings and Jim Johnson got three outs for his third save. The Orioles used eight pitchers, the Yankees six. The teams meet again in Baltimore on Thursday at 1:05 p.m. — weather permitting — for the makeup of an Aug. 27 rainout caused by Hurricane Irene. “I think everybodys going to sleep well on the train,” Showalter said. Burnett, given a reprieve in New Yorks six-man rotation after an effective start at Boston last week, allowed four runs in six-plus innings. Alex Rodriguez hit a two-run double and prized prospect Jesus Montero a two-run single off the right-field fence. The AL East leaders, however, had their six-game winning streak snapped. Last-place Baltimore ended a four-game slide. Burnett threw three wild pitches to raise his season total to 23, by far the most in the majors. New York matched a season high for errors, and the last one was especially costly. Nunez, starting in place of Derek Jeter, couldnt handle a hot shot with one out in the 11th, allowing Matt Angle to reach safely. Angle stole second with two outs and Nick Markakis was intentionally walked before Reynolds delivered an RBI single off Hector Noesi (2-1). “We gave them a lot of their runs today. Thats the bottom line, and thats why we lost this game,” Girardi said. “Even when our regulars arent in there, our defence has been pretty good. Today it wasnt. I dont know if it was the conditions. I dont know if was fatigue. I dont know what it was, but it really cost us the game.” Coming off the late night, both managers rested several regulars, and the makeshift lineups resembled a spring training game or Triple-A matchup. A trio of Yankees hitters wore numbers in the 60s, and neither team looked like a big league bunch as players battled wet, windy weather for the second day in a row. Andinos wind-blown popup in the third dropped behind the mound for a single, eluding Nunez. Burnett missed first base with his foot on a potential double play and a Bronx cheer went up when he and first baseman Brandon Laird finally converted a 3-1 putout after a couple of unsuccessful tries. “Disgusting. As sloppy as it gets,” Rodriguez said, referring to the Yankees play. “You expect that with the tough conditions.” With the game tied in the late innings, Granderson, Mark Teixeira, Robinson Cano, Vladimir Guerrero and Matt Wieters all came off the bench. To mark the 10-year anniversary of 9-11, the Yankees held a pregame ceremony on the field that included former Defence Secretary Donald Rumsfeld. The salute was held four days early at Yankee Stadium because the team will be in the middle of a 10-game, four-city road trip Sunday. Only a few thousand fans were in the stands when this one began — what else? — in the rain. Many had umbrellas or ponchos, others took cover on the concourse. It was the second unusually sparse crowd in a row at Yankee Stadium. Just 500 fans or so were left when Tuesday nights game finally ended. NOTES: Baltimore starter Zach Britton gave up four runs and five hits in five innings. … Angles bat slipped out of his hands in the second and helicoptered four rows up behind the Yankees dugout, hitting an empty seat before a fan grabbed it. … Orioles 3B Chris Davis struck out his first five times up. When he batted again in the 11th, fans chanted “We want six!” Davis grounded out to end the inning. … Both of Wednesdays starting pitchers left the ballpark early Tuesday night to get some rest. The Heat got rolled in the NBA Finals by San Antonio, losing in five games, the last three of them lopsided, and for the first time since 2011 there would be no championship parade in Miami. Stotts had only one word for his high-scoring forward: “Thanks.” Aldridge had 25 points and 16 rebounds in his return after missing seven games with a lower back contusion, and the Trail Blazers beat the Atlanta Hawks 100-85 on Thursday night to end a three-game losing streak. That debate has long centred around Pele and Diego Maradona, but many have started including Messi after a series of outstandiing performances with Barcelona.dddddddddddd Pele, however, said at an event celebrating the centennial of Neymars club Santos that “theres always this Maradona comparison, saying that hes better than Pele. Now some are saying that Messi is better than Pele. Well, he has to be better than Neymar first, which he isnt yet. He has more experience.” The 20-year-old Neymar is seen as Brazils greatest player at the moment. MIAMI — Former Kentucky guard DeAndre Liggins is back in the NBA with the Miami Heat after felony domestic violence charges against him were recently dropped in Oklahoma City. Liggins signed a 10-day contract with the Heat and joined them for practice Tuesday. He had been playing for the Heats NBA Development League affiliate, the Sioux Falls Skyforce. “We did extensive research on everything about him, on the court, off the court,” Heat coach Erik Spoelstra said. “Everything checked out fine. We feel weve gotten to know him very well, especially our Sioux Falls staff. Based our evaluations, we felt it was time to take a look at him and get to know him.” Liggins has played in 56 NBA games for Oklahoma City and Orlando. He was originally charged with two counts of kidnapping, two counts of domestic assault and battery with a dangerous weapon, three counts of domestic abuse in the presence of a minor and one count of violating a protective order. He was arrested in August after his girlfriend told police he attacked her in front of their 2-year-old son. Prosecutors are expected to refile the charge as a single misdemeanour count of domestic abuse. “We all make mistakes, unfortunately,” Liggins said. “I learned from it and I moved past that, and Im ready to get back on track.” In 35 games with Sioux Falls, Liggins averaged 14.5 points, 7.5 rebounds, 4.8 assists and 2.5 steals, and he made the leagues all-star team. Jarret Stolls goal was a scramble play that he does not find as there were four bodies in front of him. He had no chance on the Dustin Brown goal as it was a good initial save, but Brown jammed in the rebound. The Tanner Pearson goal is just a bad goal. It was a stoppable shot, but he continues to battle in the net. Huge saves on Marián Gáborík and Trevor Lewis in overtime to give his team a chance. LOS ANGELES — Spurs guard Tony Parker sat out Tuesday night against the Los Angeles Clippers, and San Antonio coach Gregg Popovich said the six-time All Star will be sidelined for quite some time because of multiple injuries. Popovich said earlier Tuesday that Parker would be out of action “for the foreseeable future” because of numerous aches and pains involving his back, groin and calf. The 13-year veteran, who played 11 minutes Sunday in the NBA All-Star game, is the Spurs leading scorer. He is also the only player averaging at least 30 minutes for Southwest Division-leading San Antonio. Last season, Parker was the only NBA player to average at least 20 points and seven assists while shooting over 50 per cent from the field and 80 per cent on free throws. “I think hes just spent, mentally and physically,” Popovich said. "The last five games or so was about 65-70 per cent, at the most, and hes developed a little nagging thing every time. Hes had a shoulder and a hip and a calf and all this kind of stuff, and now its his Achilles a little bit. “All these things have added up, and I think its affected him mentally, also. I think the last three years have caught up with him — playing a whole NBA season, and for the whole summer qualifying for that European championship that they finally got this year. Im just looking at the big picture and trying to get him whole for the stretch.” Popovich watched Parkers first 5 minutes during the All-Star game before changing the channel, but didnt think Parker did further damage by playing. When asked about the minimum number of games Parker would miss, Popovich said: “I dont think about that. Im just going to go with it and see when I think hes ready to go again,” he said. “Im not going to speculate on how long or how many games, because I dont know.” Spurs forward and defensive stalwart Kawhi Leonard missed his 12th straight game because of a broken bone in his right hand. “Its still painful for him to catch the ball and shoot the ball,” Popovich said. "We want to get him into one-on-ones and two-on-twos and let him get banged around a little bit first in practice situations, rather than throwing him into a game after four weeks, so he can get confident with it. “He tried to shoot a little bit over the break, and again today. After about 10 or 12 shots, it started to get painful and stiff again. The doctors say its healed and calcified and that sort of thing, but hes got to get through the pain and get used to the little glove that hes wearing.” Popovich also addressed remarks made by former NBA coach George Karl on ESPN that he “heard whispers” indicating 14-time All-Star Tim Duncan was thinking about retiring after the season despite having a $10.4 million option for next season. “I guess people say whatever they want to say,” Popovich said. “George must have his reasons, I dont know. I havent talked to George about such things.” . Al Jefferson scored 28 points and two others finished with more than 20 as the Bobcats routed the Portland Trail Blazers 124-94 on Saturday night. Kemba Walker added 26 and Gerald Henderson 23 for Charlotte, which posted season bests in points and margin of victory to snap a two-game losing streak. “Its a good win for us, and a good bounce back,” Bobcats coach Steve Clifford said. “Theyre an exceptional offensive team, but you could tell our guys were ready to play from the start of the game. When guys came in off the bench, they were ready as well.” The Bobcats shot 52 per cent from the field (49 of 94), outscored the Trail Blazers in the paint 54-32 and held a 50-36 rebounding advantage over Portland, which had won its last four games against Charlotte. But the Trail Blazers, playing without leading scorer LaMarcus Aldridge, could never get on track against the Bobcats, trailing by as many as 34 points late in the second half in losing for the first time in their last three games. “Thats when were at our best,” Jefferson said. “If you look at all the big wins weve had, especially at home, we had a great start. You could tell in shootaround today that we were focused, we were locked in and we knew that we needed this win tonight.” Damian Lillard scored 20 points, Dorell Wright added 17 and Wesley Matthews 15 for Portland, which shot 40.5 per cent (34 of 84) and made just 9 of 27 3-pointers. That allowed the Bobcats to bolt to an early double-digit lead, extend it to as many as 26 points late in the first half, then weather a half-hearted Trail Blazers comeback attempt early in the third quarter. “They shot the ball well, passed the ball well, rebounded the ball well, defended well and basically outplayed us,” Portland coach Terry Stotts said. "We certainly could have played better, but they were clicking on all cylinders. “You dont want to just dismiss it as one of those games. You want to learn from it. But losing by 30 points, we dont have the luxury not to play better.” Down 69-46 at the half, the Trail Blazers cut Charlottes lead to 17 points three times in the third quarter, the last aat 77-60 on Matthews layup with 6:22 left.dddddddddddd But Jefferson hit a jumper, followed by a 3-pointer by Walker to push the Bobcats lead back past the 20-point mark, and Portland never challenged again. Charlotte took its biggest lead of the game in the final two minutes behind its reserves, with Jannero Pargos 3-pointer with 1:22 remaining putting the Bobcats ahead 122-88. Behind Jefferson, Walker and Henderson, who combined for 48 points, Charlotte put together two of its best quarters this season in taking command of Saturdays game. After missing its first two shots of the game, the Bobcats hit 11 straight — four by Jefferson, three by Michael Kidd-Gilchrist, and two each from Henderson and Walker — to pull ahead 23-9 with 5:03 remaining in the first quarter. “We wanted to double Big Al and take away his post-ups,” Lillard said. “Sometimes we didnt even get a chance to double him, and hes already scoring or making good passes out of the post. We were just scrambling the whole time.” The Trail Blazers cut the Bobcats lead to 10 points four times late in the quarter, the last at 31-21 on Mo Williams jumper with 54 seconds remaining, and were down 11 points at the end of the quarter. But Charlotte opened the second quarter with 11 unanswered points, with Josh McRoberts two free throws with 10:03 left putting the Bobcats up 42-22, their first 20-point lead of the half. Charlotte took its biggest lead of the half at 26 points late in the second quarter, with Jeffersons layup with 1:43 left capping a 10-3 run for a 67-41 bulge. “Were going to have a good chance to win if all three of us are playing well offensively,” Henderson said, referring to Jefferson and Walker. “Were not always going to score that every night, but if we can play the kind of defence that we did tonight, we should have a good chance to win.” Notes: Stotts had no update on the return of Aldridge, who leads the team in scoring (23.4 points) and rebounding (11.1 per game). He has missed Portlands last five games with a low back contusion. … The Bobcats (34-36) are in seventh place in the Eastern Conference standings, 1 1/2 games ahead of Atlanta (31-36) and 1 1/2 games behind sixth-place Washington (36-33) with 12 games remaining. HILTON HEAD ISLAND, S.C. — Carl Pettersson couldnt have had a better time with Colt Knost at the RBC Heritage. He hopes to have as much fun when the two play again on Sunday. Pettersson had a run of five straight birdies on the front nine and finished with a birdie on the 18th hole for a 66 and a one-stroke lead over Knost heading into the final round of the RBC Heritage on Saturday. Pettersson and Knost chatted and laughed throughout the round, looking more like a pair of duffers at the local muni out for a weekend round rather than pro golfers chasing a PGA Tour title. “Two fat guys played in three hours 48 minutes,” Pettersson said with a smile. “That was pretty good. But we had a good time.” Especially Pettersson who used his birdie streak to overtake a nervous Knost and build a three-shot lead through 10 holes. Knost tamed the butterflies enough to find the game that had him in the lead here after Thursday and Friday, tying for the top after Petterssons bogey on the par-5 15th hole. Pettersson moved in front at the end with a stunning approach that slid by the cup on No. 18 for a closing birdie. The two will match up once again in the final pairing Sunday. “Im going to try tomorrow to have fun,” said Knost, seeking his first win on the PGA Tour. Zach Johnson, the 2007 Masters winner, shot a 66 to move to third at 8 under, three behind the leaders. Two-time RBC Heritage champion Boo Weekley had a 70 and was in fourth another shot behind. Defending champ Brandt Snedeker (69), Kevin Na (70) and Robert Garrigus (70) were next at 6 under. Calgarys Stephen Ames shot a 66 to improve to 24th at 2-under par, while Graham DeLaet of Weyburn, Sask., hit a 73 to finish the day tied for 52nd at 2 over. World No. 1 Luke Donald failed to make a move toward keeping the top spot, his even-par 71 leaving him at 2 over and tied for 52nd. Donald needs to finish eighth or better to fend off No. 2 Rory McIlroy, who like Masters champion Bubba Watson and most other top golfers, was taking the week off. Knosts roller coaster of a round included a 190-yard drive off No. 1 to take bogey followed by an eagle on No. 2. And there were plenty of missed fairways on the tight holes of Harbour Town Golf Links. Still, he kept close enough with a 69. “I could have got rattled pretty easy after that start,” Knost said. “But like I said, Im really proud of the way I hung in.” Pettersson threatened to turn the tournament into a runaway with his early birdie streak. Knost would not let that happen, overcoming some unsteady play to keep close to his playing partner. It sure wasnt easy for Knost. He came to the first tee with a two-stroke lead, then knocked his opening tee shot into some pine straw right of the fairway and took bogey. He followed that by rolling in a 48-foot eagle putt from the left fringe on No. 2 and flashed a wide smile that even had Pettersson grinning. Knosts up-and-down ride continued through the front nine. There was the lipout on No. 3 for bogey, the layup and chip to 10 feet on the par-5 fifth for birdie, and solid par saves from the bunker on No. 7 and from some more pine straw on No. 8. Then on the ninth after another wayward drive, Knost punched it to 10 feet and made the birdie to stay one behind Pettersson. Things swung Petterssons way once more on the 10th, his lead growing to three shots after he made birdie and Knost was short on his approach and missed an 8-foot attempt at par. Still, Knost kept grinding. A birdie on the 13th hole drew Knost with a stroke and the pair was tied at the top at 11 under when Pettersson took bogey on the par-5 15th hole. The two matched pars until the windswept 18th when Pettersson struck a stunning approach that slid by the cup and settled 8 feet past. He rolled in the putt with a smile on his face. “I managed to birdie the 18th, which was nice,” Pettersson said. Johnson put together his second straight sub-70 round to move into third. He has largely struggled at Harbour Town, his best showing a tie for sixth the week after he slipped on the green jacket five years ago. Johnsons round took flight with an eagle on No. 5. He closed with birdies on the 16th and 18th as he looks for his first victory since the Crown Plaza Invitational at Colonial in 2010. “Weve still got 18 holes,” Johnson said. “The last four or five holes, if Im near the lead, we can get after it a little bit.” Donald, starting almost five hours before the leaders, never got things going. Without an absolute miracle he will fall from No. 1 after he finishes Sunday, surrendering the top spot to McIlroy, who is off spending time with girlfriend Caroline Wozniacki as she competes in Denmark, according to the tennis stars tweets. Donald took the top spot from McIlroy last month. Whose got the edge over Harbour Town? Pettersson, 34, has won four times on tour while Knost, an amateur star whos struggled at this level, acknowledged his nervousness getting ready. “I dont know,” Pettersson said. “Ive only won four times out here, so its not like … Im not Phil or Tiger or anybody.” Knost planned to spend some time on the range after his round working on his tee shots. “I got a chance going into tomorrow and Im excited,” he said. Freddie Freeman, B.J Upton and Andrelton Simmons added RBI singles in a three-run sixth against Ryan Vogelsong (1-2) to help the Braves win for the fourth time in five games. That was more than enough support for Minor (1-2), winless in his previous eight starts dating to last season. He struck out six and walked two in 6 2-3 innings. Minor, who missed the first month this season with a sore left shoulder, pitched around a one-out double to Hunter Pence in the first inning and didnt allow another baserunner until Angel Pagans two-out walk in the sixth as he shut down a Giants lineup that hit eight homers in the first four meetings with the Braves. Minor gave up two of those in a 2-1 loss at home on May 2, but yielded nothing in the rematch, retiring 16 batters in a row at one point. That stretch ended when Pagan walked and went to third on Pences second double of the night. But Minor struck out Buster Posey to end the threat. Minor left with runners on first and second in the seventh. Ian Thomas struck out Brandon Crawford to escape the jaam.dddddddddddd Vogelsong was nearly as stingy early for the Giants, matching a career high with eight strikeouts and limiting the Braves to three hits and one run on Gattis triple in the first five innings. Vogelsong then ran into trouble in the sixth when he was hurt by a botched tag play at home plate by Posey. The big inning started when Jason Heyward singled and aggressively advanced to second on a flyout. Freeman followed with a single to right and Pences throw home easily beat Heyward — but he managed to elude the tag attempt by Posey, turning a sure out into a second run. That play loomed even larger when Upton and Simmons hit two-out RBI singles that made it 4-0. The Braves added another run in the seventh after a replay review overturned a call of an inning-ending double play. Manager Fredi Gonzalez challenged the call and Freeman was ruled safe at first after replays showed reliever David Huff never touched first base, allowing Tyler Pastornicky to score. The pride of Weyburn, Sask., ended up a shot back of Kevin Stadler as the Smallrus managed to break through for his first victory. It should be noted that it took Stadler 239 starts to get his first victory, so theres never a sure thing in this game. As well as DeLaets playing, he may never win a tournament. Or he might win in his next start. Thats the way golf is – no matter how well you play, theres a chance someone else might be just one stroke better. DeLaets finish in Phoenix – where he and wife Ruby recently relocated – earned him $545,600, moving him to ninth on the PGA Tours money list with $1.3 million. Hes now ranked 26th on the Official World Golf Ranking. Hes also finished in the Top 10 in his last five starts. The bearded wonder climbed into contention on Saturday with a strong 65. On Sunday, he came out to the range and promptly tweaked his back on the first shot of his warm-up. Some special treatment from trainer Dr. Craig Davies of Toronto allowed him to tee it up at the appropriate time. “We did a little extra work this morning,” DeLaet said. "My routine before the round was a little bit diffferent, but I took some Advil that kicked in a little bit, and I was feeling pretty good for most of the day.ddddddddddddquot; That became obvious early on as he went out and made birdies on five of his first 13 holes. As others on the leaderboard began to struggle, DeLaet suddenly was in contention – until he hit the 15th, where he drove his tee shot into the water on the left side of the hole. “I knew Id just have to make a lot of birdies,” he stated. “After my tee shot on 15 I thought my chances were probably gone.” But birdies on 17 and 18 put him in the clubhouse with the lead. “I knew that I needed probably to birdie the last two,” said DeLaet. “That back pin on 17 is really, really tough, and I hit what I thought was a pretty good shot there, but I still had 12, 15 feet. To birdie the last, I knew that I had – was trying to hole it, but, you know, birdie is second best.” That late run, by the way, was buoyed by the energy from the crowd, which DeLaet made sure to thank. “Obviously there are tons of people there,” he stated. “There are so many Canadians out here following me. Almost felt like a Canadian Open today. Thanks to all of them for being out there.” DeLaet will take this week off before heading to Los Angeles for the Northern Trust Open where hell continue his torrid pace to the 2013-14 season. BARCELONA, Spain — Atletico Madrid beat Valencia 4-2 while Sporting Lisbon remained undefeated in European home games this season after a 2-1 comeback win over Athletic Bilbao in the first leg of the Europa League semifinals on Thursday. Atletico dominated fellow Spanish rival Valencia at Vicente Calderon Stadium in one of the 2010 champions finest performances under coach Diego Simeone that featured Radamel Falcao netting his 31st and 32nd goals of the season. “Of course I am happy for the goals, but the important thing is that we won in such a commanding fashion,” Falcao said. In Lisbon, Emiliano Insua and Diego Capel scored in the 76th and 80th minutes to keep Sporting undefeated in 12 consecutive European home games. Bilbao takes home Jon Aurtenetxes valuable away goal and will try to rebound in next weeks second leg to set up an all-Spanish final on May 9 in Bucharest, Romania. Atletico bossed the match from the start and deservedly went ahead 18 minutes in through Falcaos opener. Forward Arda Turan fought to win possession on the right flank and picked out Falcao in the area to turn his cross into the net with a sharp header. Valencia snatched an equalizer three minutes into first-half injury time when Jonas fired home a corner flicked on by Adil Rami. Miranda put Atletico back in front four minutes after the restart with a header, and striker Adrian Lopez made it 3-1 in the 54th with a superb individual effort. Falcao then scored his second goal with an unstoppable left-footed blast that clipped the underside of the bar before finding the back of the net in the 78th. “The triumph isnt definitive, but we have to be content with the result,” said Simeone. Falcaos double levelled him with Schalkes Klass-Jan Huntelaar as the tournaments top scorers this season with 10 each. The Colombia striker, who won the Europa League last season with Porto, is the competitions all-time leading scorer with 23 goals in 23 appearances. Valencia defender Ricardo Costa scored with another header off a corner four minutes into stoppage time. “The goal in the final minute gives us hope we can turn this around,” said Valencias Roberto Soldado. “Mestalla Stadium will be fundamental to try and rebound to make the final.” Sporting outdid Bilbao at its own game at Jose Alvalade Stadium by unleashing a frenetic, pressing attack that kept Bilbao on the back foot. Bilbao earned wide praise for its victories at Manchester United and Schalke in the previous two rounds but Fernando Llorente, who has six goals in 11 Europa League appearances, was rarely in action. After holding off the hosts through the first half, Aurtenetxe tapped in a Markel Susaeta cross at the back post in the 54th against the run of play. Fernando Amorebieta came close to extending Bilbaos lead soon after when he hit the post from inside the area. But by the end Bilbaos defence looked ragged and the relentless onslaught from the home team soon paid off when Insua headed to make it 1-1 before Capel grabbed the winner with a long-range strike. “It would have been unfair to lose,” Capel said. “We played a spectacular game in every facet. We could have won by a wider margin with all the chances we had.” Bilbao was unbeaten in its previous five games in the tournament. . SASKATOON — A Montreal Canadiens prospect hospitalized with meningitis has been moved out of the intensive care unit and been upgraded to stable condition. A statement released Wednesday by the Saskatoon Health Region said Tim Bozons condition continues to improve and he has been moved into one of the hospital wards. Bozon, who plays for the Western Hockey Leagues Kootenay Ice, was first admitted to Royal University Hospital on March 1. His parents said Bozon is awake, moving around in his bed, trying to feed himself and trying to speak, the statement said. Last week, his condition was listed as critical but stable and improving. At one point he was in a medically induced coma. The 19-year-old forward fell ill following a game Feb. 28 against the Saskatoon Blades. He was selected in the third round, 64th overall, by Montreal in the 2012 NHL Entry Draft. The WHL has established a trust fund to assist Bozon and his family with medical and rehabilitation costs. EDMONTON - Saying the Edmonton Eskimos are at a critical stage for their future, general manager Ed Hervey fired head coach Kavis Reed on Monday and said he will bring in a new man who is more like himself. “It is my feeling the club is at a stage that is critical to our on-field expectations and this move was necessary,” Hervey told a news gathering hours after he informed Reed he was gone after three years as head coach. “I have confidence this decision will give our club its best opportunity to compete at a high level heading into the 2014 season.” Hervey said his plan is to appoint a head coach who will bring a structured environment, a unified coaching staff and have the ability to develop players. The first-year GM said hes looking for a coach who could bring the best staff with him, but added he has not spoken to the current Eskimo assistants about their future. “Its going to be a very thorough and methodical process and Im going to choose the right coach,” he said of the search. “Not the right fit, but the right coach. Im going to get someone who is a little bit more like myself, a little more detailed and structured and not really looking to spend a lot of time with you guys, more time developing the football team.” Reed took over the Eskimo coaching job in 2011, leading them to an 11-7 record, second in the CFL West and was a finalist for coach of the year. In 2012 their record fell to 7-11 and this year they were 4-14, one of the worst records in franchise history. Hervey, who didnt speak to the media for much of the season, said hes “not certain” there was much Reed could have done this year to save his job. “The record aside, there were other factors in my decision and moving forward I believe when I appoint the next head coach he will have all the qualifications that I want for this team. I believe that this team in some ways unachieved at times. The record did not reflect the changes we made in the off-season.” He was especially critical of the teams season-long rash of penalties that cost them valuable yards, first downs and points. He said Reed, his staff and the players never resolved that issue “and that was a concern of mine.” He did, say, however that he was impressed with Reeds ability to motivate the players, especially in the latter stages of the season when their playoff hopes were gone and they were unable to halt losing streaks. “Even when we were eliminated from the playoffs and many suggested there was nothing to play for, he was the only man downstairs who was capable of keeping those men together and playing as hard as they did. Even in the games they lost you could see the efforts they played with a I marvel at his ability to motive those men not only all season but during those times.” Hervey said Reed did a good job of holding players accountable and that despite the dismal record he “saw growth to this roster and Im excited about 2014 and what it brings.” A day earlier, in his post-season talk with the media, Reed said he gave the Eskimos everything he could and the won-loss record "doesnt reflect the character in the locker-room and the growth in that room moving forward. “This is a microwave society,” he added. “People feel the more changes you make the closer you get to something. Actually, the more changes you make the farther away you get.” Reed came to Edmonton as a defensive back in 1995 and played five seasons with the Eskimos. He spent 10 years as an assistant coach with five different CFL teams before being named Edmontons head coach in 2011. “This community has been tremendous to me for 20 years and Ive enjoyed every waking moment Ive spent in this community,” he said. Several players who attended Herveys news conference said the team feels bad for Reeds firing, something they as players contributed to. But, said quarterback Mike Reilly, a 4-14 record will result in changes. “Its a tough part of the business. Kavis is a good coach, a great man and I really enjoyed playing for him . . . he helped me a lot. His desire and his abilities will land him somewhere and he will get another opportunity.” . TORONTO — England striker Jermain Defoe has come to terms with Toronto FC and will join the MLS team at the end of February. Toronto said the 31-year-old Tottenham star will be introduced on Monday, when U.S. international midfielder Michael Bradley is also expected to be unveiled. “We are thrilled, for our club and for our fans, with the opportunity to bring a global football superstar like Jermain Defoe to Toronto FC,” Tim Leiweke, president and CEO of Maple Leaf Sports & Entertainment, said in a statement Friday. "We promised our fans in October that building a winning club was our top priority and we scoured the globe to find the right players to fulfil that promise. Right from the beginning of this process, Jermain Defoe was the top player on our list and we got our man. “We would like to thank Tottenham as well as MLSE ownership for this very clear demonstration of our commitment to winning. Most importantly, we want to thank Toronto FC fans for their patience and support getting to this day.” Defoe has scored 142 goals during two spells at Tottenham and is the clubs top scorer in European competitions. Bradley will be the next piece of the puzzle to officially fall. AS Roma announced Thursday that it had sold the 26-year-old American to MLS for US$10 million. A source with knowledge of the league said Toronto was the lone MLS suitor. Tottenham has at least nine matches to play before Defoe leaves for MLS. Toronto opens its 2014 season March 15 in Seattle. The late February departure seems to be a compromise. Defoe will miss almost all of Torontos pre-season but should arrive game-ready. Spurs strike force avoids being depleted. “Everybody knows how much this club means to me and I will play my heart out for the team and the fans until my last kick for the club,” Defoe said in a statement on Spurs website. "I have had a fantastic time here and the fans have always been amazing to me. “I am grateful for the opportunity for myself and my family to experience living overseas and for me to play in the MLS with a contract that will take me to the age of 35. I have no doubt I shall be coming back as a fan supporting the team in the years to come too.” Tottenham also announced an advertising and marketing deal with Maple Leaf Sports and Entertainment, and a July 23 friendly in Toronto as part of the transfer. “This is a great opportunity for Jermain and he feels it is one that he wishes to pursue,” said Spurs head coach Tim Sherwood. "He has played a big part in the club for many years and we all know he will give his best until his last minute in a Spurs shirt. “We have several attacking options within our squad for the remaining dozen or so games of the season after Jermain departs and we shall keep our options under review. We also have a goal threat from players in other areas of the pitch including having wide players and attacking midfielders who will enable us to vary our shape when required.” “Everybody at the club wishes Jermain every success for the future and he will always be welcome at (White Hart) Lane.” Defoe first joined the London club in February 2004 from West Ham, making 177 appearances and scoring 64 goals before leaving to join Portsmouth in January 2008. The England international was re-signed a year later and has since made 185 appearances, scoring 78 goals. “Jermain brings the complete package to Toronto FC,” said Toronto FC general manager Tim Bezbatchenko. “He is an accomplished scorer and I know that his skill and infectious personality will make him a popular star both in Toronto and around the League.” The advertising deal between the two clubs includes promotional, branding, experiential activities, advertising, broadcasting, social media and digital rights across the four-year agreement and at all MLSE properties and media sites. Tottenham and Toronto FC said MLSE will stock, promote and sell official Spurs merchandise at all its retail outlets and support the THFC Official Canadian Supporters Club. The Spurs exhibition game against Toronto will come between matches against the Seattle Sounders on July 19 and Chicago Fire on July 26. cheap jerseys . Jarome Iginla and Zdeno Chara each had two goals, Tuukka Rask made 25 saves and the Bruins beat the Philadelphia Flyers 6-1 Saturday.GLENDALE, Ariz. — Carson Palmer knew Detroits reputation for penalties, so when he let go of his pass with the game on the line, a pass interference call was a definite possibility. Sure enough, Lions cornerback Bill Bentley collided with receiver Andre Roberts in the end zone. A flag was thrown, a 31-yard penalty was called. It was Arizonas only third-down conversion - in 11 tries- of the day. Two plays later, Rashard Mendenhall scored on a 1-yard run with 1:59 to play and the Cardinals won 25-21 on Sunday in Bruce Arians home debut as Arizonas coach. “Its something we talked about a lot,” Palmer said. “Those DBs play the receiver, they dont play the ball, and when we have opportunities and theyre staring at the receiver, theyre going to face-guard. Dre (Roberts) did a great job setting that up.” Jay Feely kicked four field goals and Carson Palmer threw a 36-yard touchdown pass to rookie Andre Ellington for Arizona (1-1). Ellington, a sixth-round draft pick out of Clemson, also had a 16-yard catch to start the deciding drive. “Its not always going to be perfect,” Arians said. “Youve got to learn how to ride the emotions of the game, stay with it. I thought our coaches did a great job with some adjustments in the second half and some young kids really stepped up.” Kerry Taylor, promoted from the practice squad Saturday, had three catches for 40 yards, all late in the game with Larry Fitzgerald sidelined with a sore hamstring. They were Taylors first NFL catches. Matthew Stafford connected with Calvin Johnson on touchdown plays of 72 and 3 yards, and DeAndre Levy returned an interception 66 yards for a score for Detroit (1-1), which led 21-13 midway through the third quarter. Time and again, Detroit found itself starting deep in its own territory. “I feel like we lost the field position battle today big-time,” Stafford said. The Lions were penalized eight times for 101 yards. Asked how the team could cut down on that problem, Stafford said the Lions are trying. “Were making a concerted effort to try and play cleaner football this year,” he said. “I dont know. Maybe (we should be) asking them to quit throwing flags on us, I dont know.” Detroits Reggie Bush left the game after taking a helmet to the knee early in the second quarter, and played only briefly in the second half. “I was able to go back in the game, but I wasnt myself,” he said. “I probably shouldnt have gone back in the game, but I tried to give it a shot. We will see what happens this week. I am not sure, buut I dont think it is anything serious.dddddddddddd.” Detroit also was without standout defensive tackle Nick Fairley with a sore shoulder. Arizonas defence, which held the Lions offence scoreless in the second half, forced Detroit to punt from its 8 late. “We pride ourselves on showing up when it matters,” Arizona defensive tackle Darnell Dockett said, “and we showed up at the end of the game when it really mattered.” The Cardinals took over at their 39 and Palmers 16-yard pass to Ellington quickly moved it to the Detroit 45. The drive stalled at the 32, and on third-and-8 Palmer threw deep for Andre Roberts, who slowed down to wait for the ball and was hit by Bentley. After an incomplete pass, Palmer handed off to Mendenhall, who stretched the ball over the goal line with one hand for the deciding score. Palmers pass on the 2-point conversion attempt failed. The Lions hopes ended when Nate Burleson was stopped short of the first down by rookie Tyrann Mathieu. While Feely was good from 47, 23, 43 and 33 yards, Detroits David Akers missed a 47-yarder and had another 47-yard attempt blocked by Justin Bethel. Stafford completed 24 of 36 for 278 yards and two TDs, but was only 8 of 16 for 77 yards in the second half. Palmer finished 22 of 39 for 248 yards. Actually, Akers misfired twice in Detroits first scoring threat. His 52-yard attempt was wide right, but Bethel was called for running into the kicker. Then, Akers 47-yard attempt was wide left. Feely made his 47-yard try to put Arizona up 3-0 with 11:44 left in the half. Three plays later, Stafford threw short over the middle to Johnson, who raced 72 yards for the score. Arizonas Karlos Dansby had a chance to knock the pass down or intercept, but Stafford threw the ball so hard it zipped through the linebackers hands. The Cardinals responded with a six-play, 80-yard drive on their next possession. Palmer lofted a 22-yard pass to Fitzgerald, then found Ellington open on a 36-yard play for the score to put Arizona up 10-7 with 7:32 to play in the second quarter. Detroit regained the lead with a 10-play, 92-yard touchdown drive capped by Staffords 3-yard touchdown pass to Johnson with 1:55 left in the half. Notes: After the game, Peterson asked Johnson to trade jerseys and the Lions star obliged. … Besides defending Johnson and returning punts, Peterson also caught a pass and completed one. … Detroit is the only team Arizona has beaten in the Cardinals last 14 games. Arizona has beaten the Lions twice and gone 0-12 against everyone else … Campbell got Arizonas first sack of the season. JEREZ, Spain — Engine trouble limited Red Bulls new car to a handful of laps on the third day of Formula One preseason testing, with Daniel Ricciardo sputtering to a halt seconds into his debut with the world champion on Thursday. Ricciardo made it only halfway around the Jerez track before his RB10 rolled to a stop and began spouting smoke from the back. After team mechanics tended to the car, Ricciardo went back out for a mere two trips around the circuit before calling it quits. That gives Red Bull a measly total of 14 laps through the first three days of testing, which ends on Friday. Fernando Alonsos new Ferrari also stopped after 26 laps just before the Ayrton Senna chicane. His Spanish fans cheered him on from the stands as he was ferried back to the pitlane. But after a quick fix in the garage, Alonso was back out and adding up the laps to finish his first day of testing with 58. “It was good to get back behind the wheel,” said Alonso, who added that he expected Red Bull to have worked out the kinks by the season-opening Australian Grand Prix on March 16. “Its not our focus what others are doing,” the former two-time champion said. “They have little running so far but plenty of time before Australia. They will put things in place.” Kevin Magnussen impressed in his F1 debut for McLaren by posting the days fastest lap at 1 minute, 23.276 seconds after he took the wheel from Jenson Button in the afternoon and blazed through 52 laps. McLaren has rebounded nicely from its no-show on Tuesday due to an electrical problem and has clocked the quickest lap time for two straight days, with Button doing so on Wednesday. Felipe Massa also had a strong start to his stint at Williams with the sessions second-fastest lap, 0.424 seconds behind Magnussen. Mercedes Lewis Hamilton was the busiest driver, putting in a days high of 62 laps and showing no jitters after Tuesdays crash. Red Bulls sister team, Toro Rosso, also had a bad day when Jean-Eric Vergnes car stalled in the pitlane. After it was pushed back to the paddock, it ground to a halt in the pitlane a second time. Marrusia finally rolled out its new car shortly after it arrived on a trailer. Ricciardo was debuting for Red Bull after four-time champion Sebastian Vettel was limited to just 11 laps over the first two sessions. Vettels run on day two was cut short when engine-maker Renault reported a malfunction. The Austrian team said “similar issues” still plagued their new vehicle. “The measures we took only partially solved the issue,” Red Bull engineer Andy Damerum said. “And, as with yesterday, its more sensible to stop and dig deeper into finding a solution. Its obviously not where we want to be and naturally the whole team is frustrated.” All teams are struggling to get their cars ready after F1 made a sweeping revision of the rulebook that included a shift to a turbo engine and integrating more sophisticated energy recovery systems. But, so far, traditional contenders Ferrari, Mercedes, and McLaren are dealing better with the new regulations than the titleholder. After testing in southern Spain, two more tests follow in Bahrain. CHICAGO — The Pirates had a four-run lead in the first inning and were up two runs after five. Both times the Cubs came back, with Starlin Castro providing much of the power. In the end, the Pirates were finally able to shut down Chicago. Pedro Alvarez had two hits and two RBIs, and Russell Martin drove in the go-ahead run on a sacrifice fly in the eighth inning as Pittsburgh beat the Cubs 7-6 on Tuesday night. Jason Grilli closed with a perfect ninth for his second save in three chances. “We just kept playing,” Pirates manager Clint Hurdle said. “Its not about whats not happening. Its about what weve got to do next. Thats just the way we kept going. It was a fist fight off the mound for us most of the night. We executed extremely well in the first inning on offence and kept building innings.” Cubs reliever Pedro Strop (0-1) walked two batters in the eighth and recorded only one out before being replaced by left-hander James Russell. Russell walked Alvarez to load the bases and Martin followed with a fly ball to right field that made it 7-6. “Had we laid down after the first inning, giving up four runs, I would have been extremely disappointed,” Cubs manager Rick Renteria said. “But we didnt. We kept chipping away. I think thats what were talking about. We have to fight. We have to keep battling every day and if they keep doing that were going to get our situation where both sides of our game gets to where it needs to be.” The Cubs tied the game in the seventh against Tony Watson (1-0) on Anthony Rizzos hit up the middle scoring Emilio Bonifacio, who went 3 for 5 and is batting .515. Castro hit a game-tying three-run homer in the third and a solo shot in the sixth against Pirates starter Charlie Morton for his first career multi-homer game. “The two pitches that they scored four of their runs on were just terrible pitches,” Morton said of Castros homers. “It could have turned out a lot better had I executed a little bit better even instead of giving up a home run. The guys picked me up.” Jackson gave up six runs on nine hits in 4 2-3 innings. Jackson struggled with his command, walking four (one intentional) and hitting a batter. Morton didnt fare much better allowing five runss on eight hits in six innings.dddddddddddd Jacksons troubles began on the games first pitch with a lead-off double by Starling Marte. It sparked a four-run inning. Nine Pirates batted in the first. Alvarez doubled to score Marte and Andrew McCutchen for a 2-0 Pirates lead. Neil Walker added an RBI single and Travis Ishikawas sacrifice fly made it 4-0. Bonifacios two-out single to centre field in the second inning scored Ryan Sweeney from second base to cut the Pirates lead to 4-1. Jackson walked Marte and Travis Snider in the fourth to bring up McCutchen, who came through with an RBI single that made it 5-4. Ishikawas triple in the fifth scored Martin, who doubled to start the inning, and extended Pittsburghs lead to 6-4. “He played more of a supporting role, you can see hes being pitched more difficult,” Hurdle said of McCutchen. “A lot of pitches, sequences, balls arent there to hit but when they crossed the plate a couple times today he squared up and hit them really hard. Hes a real good player.” Renteria was ejected in the top of the ninth inning by home plate umpire Jeff Nelson for arguing balls and strikes. It was Renterias first ejection. Notes: Renteria said the Cubs are sticking with the five-man rotation as constructed meaning RHP Carlos Villanueva will stay in the rotation and not move back to the bullpen. . Cubs president of baseball operations Theo Epstein said he didnt have a problem with top prospect Javier Baezs recent ejection at Triple-A Iowa labeling it a “great development experience” for the 21-year-old shortstop. . Epstein said the Cubs are being cautious with Double-A Tennessee OF prospect Jorge Soler (sore right hamstring) by putting him on the seven-day disabled list. Soler aggravated his hamstring during the first minor league game of the season while running to second base on a double. . On the 40th anniversary of Hank Aaron hitting the 715th home run of his career to set an MLB record, Pirates manager Clint Hurdle fondly remembered the moment. “I wasnt watching at the start and my dad tried to tune in the radio because we were in Florida,” Hurdle said. “We listened to a lot of the games on radio. As it turned out, it was a pretty magical moment.” cheap nfl jerseys cheap jerseys ’ ’ ’

ST. LOUIS — After failing to hold three-run leads in two straight games, Allen Craig and the St. Louis Cardinals put their series final against Milwaukee out of reach. Craig homered on a four-hit day that included three RBIs, and Matt Adams hit a three-run homer as the Cardinals beat the Brewers 9-3 Wednesday. “Its nice to see some big production that we know is going to come from certain guys” said Cardinals manager Mike Matheny, who slept on his office couch after an 11-inning loss Tuesday night. Jon Jay had three hits and a walk his first four trips to the plate. The Cardinals avoided a three-game sweep against the team with the best record in the major leagues. “Ive been feeling pretty good at the plate for a little while now, hitting some balls hard,” Craig said. “Frustrations part of it. Things are going to turn around.” Shelby Miller (3-2) worked around homers to Mark Reynolds and Carlos Gomez, allowing three runs and six hits in six-plus innings. “Kind of little rough early on,” Miller said. “Its always nice to have a lot of runs scored for you, but at the same time, youve got to act like its a close game no matter what.” Milwaukee is 20-8, a franchise record for wins through the seasons first full first month. Matt Garza (1-3) joined the lengthy list of injured Brewers when he was removed in the fourth inning because of a bruised right thumb from getting jammed on an at-bat to end the third. He said there was no doubt hed be ready for his next start. “Im going to make sure Im OK by then,” Garza said. “Im not here to skip a start, Im prepared to pitch. I want to get right back out there.” Ryan Braun (oblique) and Jean Segura (cut on head) didnt start during the series, and Aramis Ramirez (elbow) was out the last two games for Milwaukee, which batted light-swinging Scooter Gennett third. Segura and Ramirez are expected to return Thursday for the start of a four-game series at Cincinnati, though Braun remains day to day. Manager Ron Roenicke said Braun will not start Thursday and added, “In a couple days, he needs to be ready to go.” Segura played the eighth at shortstop and doubled in the ninth. It was 50 degrees at game time. The sun popped out of the clouds a few times, each time getting a big cheer. Matt Hollidays RBI single put the Cardinals in front in the first, Reynolds hit a two-run shot in the second and Adams answered in the third with his second of the season, estimated at 439 feet, for a 4-3 lead. Craig doubled for the second straight at-bat in the fourth, driving in two runs off Wei-Chung Wang, and RBI doubles by Miller and Jay made it 8-3 in the fifth. The four-hit game matched Craigs career best. He had seven hits in the series, including two homers, lifting his average to .220. Miller allowed three runs and five hits the first three innings, but no runs on one hit and three walks the rest of his outing. Hes given up seven homers. Garza was charged with five runs and rookie Wei-Chung Wang gave up four runs in three innings. Backup catcher Martin Maldonado pitched the eighth for the Brewers, the 13th reliever needed to cover 16 innings in the series. Roenicke told Maldonado not to throw too hard. NOTES: The Cardinals are skipping the fifth spot in the rotation, taking advantage of a day off Thursday and planning to start Adam Wainwright against the Cubs Travis Wood on Friday in Chicago. Marco Estrada (2-1, 2.87) is to pitch for the Brewers on Thursday, opposing Homer Bailey (1-2, 6.15). … The Cardinals said Jim Edmonds, Willie McGee, Mike Shannon and Marty Marion will be inducted into the teams Hall of Fame in August. … Jay is 8 for 13 against Garza. … Miller has 19 career wins, including a 5-0 record against Milwaukee. LOUIS — Even with leading scorer Alexander Steen watching from the press box, the St. Louis Blues had plenty of offence. Vladimir Tarasenko and Patrik Berglund scored 1:17 apart late in regulation to tie it and defenceman Kevin Shattenkirk netted the deciding goal in the fifth round of a shootout in a 6-5 victory over the Chicago Blackhawks on Saturday night. “We sure do miss some great and important players, but we still have to get points, win games,” said Berglund, who beat rookie goalie Antti Raanta on a power play with 2:34 to go. “Obviously, a good start for that is to come back against this team and in this building.” Shattenkirk had an assist for his 27th point and scored his second game-deciding shootout goal against the Blackhawks. Last season, he scored in the seventh round of a 4-3 victory on April 4 in Chicago. “They have a little more faith in me,” Shattenkirk joked. “Its nice when you get out there and you have a chance to win it for your team.” Patrick Kane had a goal and assist in the Blackhawks second three-goal first period in two nights and extended his point streak to 14 games. Kane added another assist on Brent Seabrooks goal in the third period that made it 5-3 — Chicagos third two-goal lead. “They couldnt handle us in their zone, and we couldnt handle them in our zone,” Blues coach Ken Hitchcock said. “So it just goes back and forth. I was happiest that we stayed with it.” The Blues are 3-0 against the Blackhawks, who lead the NHL with 60 points. Two wins were by shootout and all three were decided by a goal. St. Louis faced deficits of 2-0, 3-1 and 5-3 without Steen, who was placed on the injured list on Saturday because of a concussion. Steen, who is second in the NHL with 24 goals, is out indefinitely. “The crowd was into it, great intensity,” Blackhawks coach Joel Quenneville said. “Good for the sport. Tough for us.” Brian Elliott finished strong in the Blues net after Jaroslav Halak was pulled following a rough first period.dddddddddddd “We were discouraged and so I just felt like we needed to do something to kick us into a different gear,” Hitchcock said. “Sometimes those things work and sometimes they dont.” Kane has eight goals and 17 assists during his point streak. Patrick Sharp scored his 22nd goal in the first period and has six goals in three games. T.J. Oshie and Tarasenko also scored in the shootout for St. Louis. Jonathan Toews and Sharp scored for Chicago, which failed on chances by Marian Hossa and Kane to end it. Kane, who shot wide, is 0-for-9 in the shootout. “We knew they werent going to quit,” Kane said. “Of course its frustrating. We got a point, so I guess thats one positive you can take from it.” The Blackhawks faded one night after they beat Colorado 7-2 at home, and fell to 7-0-3 on the second day of back-to-back games. Berglunds tying goal came with Niklas Hjalmarsson off for holding. Kane, Toews and Duncan Keith had two points apiece in the first period for Chicago. Seabrooks floating shot from near the blue line 1:06 into the third gave the Blackhawks a 5-3 lead. Elliott replaced Halak, who stopped only 10 of 13 shots in the first period. The Blues tied it at 3 on rookie Dmitrij Jaskins first NHL goal in the second period. “It was a lucky shot,” Jaskin said. “I was just excited, really excited.” NOTES: The Blues had their first home sellout of the season with a standing-room crowd of 20,082. Attendance was fortified by several hundred fans wearing Blackhawks red. … St. Louis is 11-0-1 against the Central Division. … Blues F Vladimir Sobotka aggravated an upper-body injury at the end of the morning skate and wasnt activated from the injured list, as had been anticipated. STONEY CREEK, Ont. — The Canadian Football League Players Association has elected a new executive committee as it prepares for the next round of labour talks with the league. Scott Flory has been elected president, Jay McNeil will serve as first vice-president and Marwan Hage of the Ottawa Redblacks will serve as second vice-president, the CFLPA said Monday in a statement. Flory succeeds Mike Morreale as president. The 2014-15 executive committee also includes third vice-president Jeff Keeping of the Toronto Argonauts and treasurer Brian Ramsay of the Edmonton Eskimos. The CFLPA is set to hold talks with the league April 10-11. “This CBA negotiation, coinciding as it does with the start of the leagues new five-year deal with TSN, is a perfect time to revisit some of the past revenue concessions made by the CFL players and negotiate a deal that is fair and reasonable for both the players and the league,” Flory said. Player health and safety issues, career transitioning and pension improvements are also expected to be discussed. The leagues current collective bargaining agreement with the players expires May 30. Flory said he is expecting changes going forward. “Our members have worked hard to provide high-calibre entertainment on the field, as well as a strong CFL presence in their communities, both of which have contributed significantly to the success of the league,” he said. "While the CFLPA agrees that we must remain sensible and smart about our business, the burden of financial responsibility is not one that can or should be borne solely by the players. “While we want to continue to play the game that we love, we will not play the 2014 season under the terms of the current CBA.” In a release earlier in the month, commissioner Mark Cohon said labour negotiations will be kept private. “Out of respect for this important process, and for our players, I never discuss negotiations in the media or in public,” Cohon said. “We are committed to working towards a fair and reasonable agreement with our players. We want to be fair to them and keep our league on the path to being strong as well as stable.” The 2014 season is slated to begin June 26 with the Winnipeg Blue Bombers home to the Toronto Argonauts. Canadas most successful female freestyle skier ended her career earlier this year with an unexpected sweep of the moguls and dual moguls gold medals at the world championships. That performance earned Heil the Bobbie Rosenfeld Award as The Canadian Press female athlete of 2011. “I knew it was the last time Id stand on a podium and hear the Canadian anthem,” Heil said of her double victory at Deer Valley, Utah. “It was an incredible moment that just kind of wrapped up my whole career in this one last great final moment.” The 2006 Olympic gold medallist garnered 115 points to win the award in balloting among sports editors and broadcasters across the country. Long-track speedskater Christine Nesbitt was second with 100 points, ahead of soccer star Christine Sinclair (84), short-track speedskater Marianne St-Gelais (39) and world champion boxer Mary Spencer (31). The award is named after Rosenfeld, an Olympic champion and all-rounder who was voted Canadas top female athlete for the first half of the 20th century. Figure skater Patrick Chan won the Lionel Conacher Award as Canadas male athlete of the year on Wednesday. It is surprising Heil has not won the Rosenfeld Award before, considering a stellar career that saw her take five overall World Cup titles, 58 World Cup top-three finishes, four gold and two silver medals at world championships, and her gold at the 2006 Winter Games in Turin, Italy, and silver at the 2010 Games in Vancouver. The wins at her final meet were especially significant because, while she had three world championship golds in dual moguls, in which two skiers come down the hill together, she had never before won the single moguls title. Heil, a native of Spruce Grove, Alta., who has been based in Montreal since 2006, retired after the worlds in February to do charity work and concentrate on her studies at McGill University in business management, with a minor in political science. She has not even been on skis since, although she planned to get back on the snow during a visit to Alberta to visit her family this week. Then again, it took daily work from doctors, physiotherapists and others just to keep her upright to compete last season. Just before the 2010-11 campaign, Heil suffered a bone bruise in a knee, an injury that takes 12 to 18 months to heal. But she kept going. “My physiotherapist was massaging my leg after every run,” she said. "I was on the ice machine for hours. “I had to get some lubricating injections to ski. It was tough to have confidence. I almost didnt make it to the world championships and that was very important to me, to have one last shot at that title I had never won. So my medical team had to really get behind me.” The week before, she made the painful announcement at a World Cup meet in Calgary that she would retire at the end of the season. Then, with a load of family and friends watching, she fell during her final race in Canada. “I think I fell maybe three times in my entire career and I fell in that race in Calgary,” she said. "The world championships were four days later and you could say my confidence was at an all-time low. "I wanted to get into the right mindset and I wasnt getting there. Finally I just let it go, let the expectations go, and said Im here. I love this sport. Its my last opportunity to go down my favourite hill. “Its one of the hardest in the world and I just wanted to connect with that speed and joyy.dddddddddddd So I just let it go. And it all came together.” Now shes added female athlete of the year to her list of prizes. “It doesnt seem real, its a huge honour at the end of my career,” the 28-year-old said. “There are a lot of women that have won that Ive looked up to my whole career, and aspired to be at their level of excellence. Nancy Greene (1967 and 1968) obviously being one. She was a legend. I really looked up to Catriona Le May Doan (1998, 2001, 2002) and her total domination of her sport (speed skating).” The Canadian Press also conducted a parallel survey in conjunction with Yahoo! Canada to allow the public to make its own choices for female athlete of the year. Sinclair topped that survey with 38 per cent of the online votes cast. Heil was next at 25 per cent and Nesbitt was third at 14 per cent. Also getting votes from Yahoo! Canada readers were Spencer, St-Gelais, triathlete Paula Findlay, luger Alex Gough, ski-cross world champion Kelsey Serwa, track cyclist Tara Whitten and mountain biker Catharine Pendrel. Heils goal now is to do as well off the trail as she did as a skier. Given the drive and dedication she put into that, it would be tough to bet against her. After missing a medal by 1/100th of a point at her first Olympics in 2002, Heil shut down competition for a year to rework her technique and “rebuild” her body so she could compete with the worlds best. She came back to win three World Cup titles in a row. Before the 2006 Games, she discovered that her training expenses exceeded her funding and wondered whether she could continue. But seemingly out of nowhere, a group of business people from Montreal and Edmonton came together with the money she needed for perhaps the best training crew in the country. She rewarded them by taking Canadas first gold at the Turin Games and afterwards, she helped found B2ten, an organization that raises money to fund high level athletes, with her coach and boyfriend Dominick Gauthier and businessman J.D. Miller. Heil fell in love with freestyle as a youngster watching Canadian Jean-Luc Brassard win gold at the 1994 Olympics and hopes to be an inspiration for another generation of young girls to pick up the sport. She runs a summer camp for girl skiers that has become so popular theyve had to turn applicants down. She recalled receiving a picture drawn by a girl ahead of the 2010 Games of her standing on the top level of a podium. “I had drawn that same picture when I was nine years old and I took it and tucked it in my backpack and brought it to the hill with me,” said Heil, who ended up second to American Hannah Kearney in Vancouver. She also works with the Because Im a Girl program and last summer took three girls who had been identified as leaders on a 10-day trip to Rwanda. And she designs jewellery for Birks. She showed one with five different sized rings that signify joy, team, target (or focus), courage and "everything hanging from a dream. “I believe in my heart that I could challenge for a gold medal in Sochi (in 2014), but it felt like the right time (to retire),” she said. "I was in a fortunate position where I had accomplished my goals and I wanted to start building the next phase of my life. “But of course Ill miss being in the start gate. Theres nothing like that moment where your eyes narrow and you hear the starter and you push out of the gate and just let it happen. Its a special feeling to be able to soar off a jump and travel 30 metres and do a backflip in the air. Its like youre flying.” cheap nfl jerseys cheap jerseys ’ ’ ’

SYDNEY, Australia — Fifth-seeded Angelique Kerber of Germany beat Dominika Cibulkova of Slovakia 7-6 (5), 7-5 on Monday to move into the second round of the Sydney International, one of the last warm-up tournaments for the Australian Open starting next week. Kerber will next play Estonias Kaia Kanepi, who beat American qualifier Victoria Duval 6-1, 6-3. In other first-round matches, Lucie Safarova beat 2010 French Open champion Francesca Schiavone 6-4, 6-4 and American Bethanie Mattek-Sands had a 6-4, 6-3 win over Canadas Eugenie Bouchard. Two other U.S. players advanced, with Lauren Davis beating Australias Jarmila Gajdosova 6-4, 7-6 (8) and Varvara Lepchenko scoring a 6-3, 3-6, 7-5 win over two-time major winner Svetlana Kuznetsova of Russia. Tsvetana Pironkova of Bulgaria beat Sorana Cirstea of Romania 6-4, 6-1. On the comeback from a long layoff with a knee injury, Mattek-Sands had a first-round loss in Brisbane last week and went through three rounds of qualifying for Sydney. She next faces defending champion and No. 1-seeded Agnieszka Radwanska. “She reads the ball so early so its going to be a great battle,” Mattek-Sands said of her second-round match. “But Im looking forward to it. This is why you train – its to play the best players in the world. So why not play the No. 1 seed?” The Hobart International had another injury setback Monday when fifth-seeded Flavia Pennetta withdrew citing a wrist injury, a day after Venus Williams pulled out following her run to the final at the ASB Classic in Auckland, New Zealand. In first-round Hobart matches, Spanish qualifier Estrella Cabeza Candela beat Karin Knapp of Italy 7-5, 6-4, Australian wildcard entry Casey Dellacqua beat Belgian qualifier Alison Van Uytvanck 6-4, 6-4 and Zhang Shuai had a 6-3, 6-1 win in an all-Chinese match against Zheng Jie. Kerry wants to answer your emails at cmonref@tsn.ca. Dear Mr. Fraser, In the Islanders/Blues game on Saturday, the Isles had the apparent game-winning goal overturned in overtime because of a distinct kicking motion by Thomas Vanek. This was the explanation the referee received from Toronto after the goal was reviewed. Ive watched the play over and over, I cant see any kicking motion, let alone a distinct one. The Isles broadcast team thought it was a good goal. They even reported the Blues broadcast team called it a good goal. The Blues goalie (Jaroslav Halak) skated toward the gate leading to the visitors locker room (clearly, he must have figured it was a good goal). The NHL uses the word “distinct” to describe the words “kicking motion.” According to the dictionary, “distinct” means readily distinguishable by the senses. I would imagine that if the NHL added “distinct” they meant that the motion could not be interpreted as anything other than a kicking motion. What does a “distinct kicking motion” look like from a referees perspective? As a fan, I would assume the knee would have to bend a bit or the thigh would have to move somewhat, especially if we are talking about a motion being “distinct.” I know the NHL can overturn referees calls if there is conclusive evidence, but what does mean if the video doesnt seem to support the explanation. Does the NHL mean “distinct kicking motion” in a figurative or a literal way? Is there an explanation for “distinct” that the NHL uses that fans and internet analysts are not aware of? How does the NHL determine conclusive evidence to overturn a call, especially when most people watching assumed the goal was a good one? The refs didnt spend a long time at the timekeepers station, so the evidence should have been distinct to everyone watching, which is wasnt according to how many people thought the goal should have stood. The NHL had to see something that they consider “distinct,” but that the rest of people watching may not have considered (this is my speculation). Its that “something” that has prompted my email inquiry to you. Was this simply a bad call by the guys in Toronto (a frustrating bad call in my personal opinion)? I appreciate you taking the time to read this email. I enjoy reading your column on TSN.ca. Thank you,Michael Bonet Michael: Thank you for your detailed question along with the logical (and expert) analysis you provided relative to the goal Thomas Vanek scored in overtime. To the referees eye, mind and perspective Thomas Vanek did NOT use a “distinct kicking motion” to propel the puck past Blues goalie Jaroslav Halak and score the game-winning goal in overtime. This was another example of an “officiating decisiion” made correctly on the ice that was overturned by “non-officiating personnel” that staff the Situation Room on a nightly basis.dddddddddddd (NFL and MLB employ and empower referees/umpires to make final video review decisions). The guidelines and definition in determining a “distinct kicking motion” must have changed drastically, at least concerning Situation Room criteria employed, from when the kicking puck rule was first explained to my colleagues and I during a training camp meeting the season the rule was implemented. Otherwise Thomas Vaneks goal and the one scored by Brendan Gallagher of the Habs against Martin Brodeur last week (both of which were deemed legal by the referee in great position on the ice) would not have been overturned and disallowed through the video review process. The definition in rule 38.4 (iv) remains the same as when it was explained to us in that training camp meeting by Hockey Ops that still control the Situation Room. “A DISTINCT KICKING MOTION is one which, with a pendulum motion, the player propels the puck with his skate into the net. If the Video Goal Judge determines that it was put into the net by an attacking player using a distinct kicking motion, it must be ruled NO GOAL.” As you correctly pointed out, Michael, the former NHL players working as analysts on both the NY Islanders and St. Louis Blues broadcast teams were convinced that Vaneks goal should count. They went so far as to say that Vanek wouldnt have known where the puck was as he rotated his body position away from Halak at the top of the goal crease and was then shoved from behind by Alexander Steen of the Blues. A referees perspective would clearly indicate that the bump from behind by Steen changed Vaneks rotation to a forward motion toward the net and caused the puck to be deflected off Vaneks skate and into the net. (Rule 49.2 – A puck that deflects into the net off an attacking players skate who does not use a distinct kicking motion is a legitimate goal. A puck that is directed into the net by an attacking plays skate shall be a legitimate goal as long as no distinct kicking motion is evident). We can envision various legal plays when a player is allowed to deliberately turn and angle his skate to direct a puck into the net or even makes a natural sliding stop at the crease in order to contact the puck causing it to enter the goal. Unless there has been some change in the definition and criteria of a “distinct kicking motion” it makes no sense that Thomas Vaneks goal would be disallowed through a video review decision. If there has been a “distinct” change in the criteria that the Situation Room employs in rendering their exclusive decisions, perhaps it is time they advise the rest of the hockey world! Until that takes place, Michael, this decision will be viewed by most as “simply a bad call by the guys in Toronto!” cheap nfl jerseys cheap jerseys ’ ’ ’

DUBAI, United Arab Emirates — Novak Djokovic opened the defence of his Dubai Championships title with a straight sets victory over Denis Istomin, while second-seeded Juan Martin del Potro had to retire from his first-round match on Tuesday. Top-seeded Djokovic, who is making only his second appearance this year after reaching the quarterfinals of the Australian Open, was a 6-3, 6-3 winner over 54th-ranked Istomin of Uzbekistan. “It wasnt as easy as the scoreline indicates,” said Djokovic, who has won in Dubai on four occasions. "I needed to work for my games. “Having not played for more than four, five weeks, an official match, obviously it takes its toll on the court.” Djokovic saved all four break points he faced on serve and broke Istomin three times — in the third and ninth games of the first set and in the second game of the second set. Del Potro was not so fortunate, being forced to retire against Somdev Devvarman of India after losing the first-set tiebreaker 7-6 (3). Since winning the Sydney title last month, Del Potro has been struggling with a left wrist injury that has conjured up memories of similar pain he experienced in his right wrist four years ago. In 2010, the year after he won the U.S. Open, he played only three tournaments before and after surgery on his right wrist. Del Potro was fighting back tears in Dubai when he came to talk to the media after his retirement. “I dont feel really well,” he said. "My wrist is hurting a lot and everybody knows what happened to me four years ago with my other wrist. “It was really tough to play today. I tried everything. I cannot be the player I would like to be.” Having felt the pain in his left wrist during the Australian Open, Del Potro went at the end of January to consult with Dr. Richard Berger, who performed his right wrist surgery at the Mayo Clinic in Minnesota. The doctor recommended a course of physical therapy. Asked if he would have kept playing if he won the first set, Del Potro said: “I dont think so, no. It was hurting too much.” Devvarman, a wild card who won a challenger in New Delhi last week, hit a service winner on his third set point in the tiebreaker. That proved to be the final point of the match. “Its unfortunate, especially for a guy like him,” Devvarman said. “I realized he wasnt comfortable hitting backhands and I tried to make him hit as many as I could, and he wasnt really hitting over it so I knew he wasnt happy.” Third-seeded Tomas Berdych extended his winning streak to eight matches with a 6-3, 6-4 win over Romanian qualifier Marius Copil. Berdych, who reached the final in Dubai last year, won the Rotterdam title two weeks ago. Fifth-seeded Jo-Wilfried Tsonga of France secured a 6-2, 6-4 win over Victor Hanescu of Romania. Price struck out 10 in his Detroit debut and was long gone when Alex Avila homered in the 12th inning to lift the Tigers over the New York Yankees 4-3 Tuesday night. The early albeit extremely long-range forecast for the 2014 NHL draft is cloudy, with not as many stars immediately visible as a year ago. By all accounts, this years draft, compared to the Nathan MacKinnon-Seth Jones sweepstakes of 2013, isnt quite as star-studded at the top end and isnt nearly as deep, but what it may lack in star power/depth, it will make up for in unpredictability and competitiveness. Indeed, in TSNs annual pre-season survey of 10 NHL scouts, no less than four players received at least one vote as the No. 1 ranked prospect. While two players – Kootenay Ice offensive centre Sam Reinhart and big Barrie Colts defenceman Aaron Ekblad – somewhat distanced themselves from the rest of the pack, everything about this draft is as far from clear cut as you can get. Reinhart and Ekblad were the only two prospects to show up on every one of the 10 scouts Top 10 ballots. Reinhart, the son of former NHL defenceman Paul and younger brother of New York Islander prospect Griffin and Calgary Flames centre Max, received five first-place votes from TSNs 10-man NHL scouting panel. Hes a skilled, point-producing forward with an extremely high hockey I.Q. Ekblad, the big defenceman who was deemed an “exceptional player” by Hockey Canada and permitted to play in the OHL as a 15 year old, received three first-place votes. Ekblad demonstrated strong two-way play with a stellar effort at the Ivan Hlinka Memorial Underr-18 tournament in August, captain of Canadas gold-medal team. But eight of the 10 scouts had Ekblad no lower than No. 2 overall while some scouts had Reinhart as low as No. 3 or No. 4. By the time the voting points were tallied, Reinhart and Ekblad finished with identical voting points, though Reinhart gets the edge as TSNs pre-season No. 1 by virtue of more first-place votes (5) than Ekblad (3). “Its the classic offensive forward versus a big defenceman,” one NHL scout told TSN. Historically, the forward almost always wins out, at least in this millienium. Last year, forward MacKinnon went No. 1, defenceman Jones went No. 4. In 2012, forward Nail Yakupov went first ahead of defenceman Ryan Murray, who went No. 2. In 2011, Ryan Nugent-Hopkins went first, defenceman Adam Larsson went fourth and in 2009, forward John Tavares went first to defenceman Victor Hedmans second. You have to go back to 2006 to find a defenceman who went first overall, when American Erik Johnson was No. 1. In fact, since 2000, more goaltenders (Rick DiPietro in 2000 and Marc-Andre Fleury in 2003) have gone No. 1 overall than defencemen. Johnson is the only one in that time period. Thats in stark contrast to the five-year stretch from 1992 to 1996, when defencemen (Roman Hamrlik, Ed Jovanovksi, Bryan Berard and Chris Phillips) were the top picks in four of those five years.dddddddddddd. In this years TSN survey of scouts, two other players besides Reinhart and Ekblad – rangy German centre Leon Draisaitl of the Prince Albert Raiders and Oshawa General forward Michael Dal Colle, who plays both wing and centre – received first-place votes. Draisaitl is ranked No. 4 on TSNs pre-season list and he showed up on nine of 10 scouts ballots. Dal Colle checks in at No. 9 on the TSN list and while one scout had him at No. 1, five other scouts didnt include him at all in their Top 10. Its that kind of year. William Nylander, the Calgary-born Swedish son of former NHLer Michael Nylander, is No. 3 on TSNs list. The skilled and exciting forward actually plays on the same line with his soon-to-be 41 year old father on Rogle, in the Swedish Allsvenska league. And Nylander, amazingly, isnt the only projected Top 10 prospect in this draft whos playing on the same team as his former NHL father in his draft year. Finnish forward Kasperi Kapanen is the son of former NHL winger Sami Kapanen, now 40, and that father-son combo is playing on KalPa in Finland. Kapanen, a dynamic albeit sub 6-foot offensive forward, is No. 8 on TSNs Pre-Season Top 15. Kingston Frontenac centre Sam Bennett, who plays a strong, heady two-way game, is No. 5 on TSNs list. Calgary Hitmen power winger Jake Virtanen checks in at No. 6, followed by big Peterborough Pete winger Nick Ritchie, who is the younger brother of Dallas prospect Brett Ritchie. With Kapanen at No. 8 and Dal Colle at No. 9, TSNs Top 10 is rounded out by Czech offensive-minded forward Jakub Vrana, who is playing with Linkoping in Sweden this season. Spots 11 thru 15 on TSNs list are occupied as follows: Swedish winger Anton Karlsson of Frolunda; Red Deer Rebel defenceman Haydn Fleury; American forward Nick Schmaltz of Green Bay in the USHL; Russian centre Ivan Barbashev of the QMJHLs Moncton Wildcats and Kingston defenceman Roland McKeown. Swedish forward Adrian Kempe of Modo and Plymouth Whaler forward Matt Mistele checked in as Honorable Mentions, just outside the top 15. “Its going to be a wide open draft,” one scout said. “Youre going to see a lot of movement over the year. Its going to be a real sorting out process, much more than usual.” cheap nfl jerseys cheap jerseys ’ ’ ’

SYLVANIA, Ohio — Laura Diaz almost chose to walk away from golf to spend more time at home with her family. Now shes making the decision to juggle both jobs seem like a shrewd move. “I love being a mom; its the greatest thing in the world,” she said after following a 9-under 62 with a solid 69 on Friday to maintain a three-shot lead through 36 holes at the Marathon Classic. “Its hard for me when I have to choose. So I made a list. My family is first, and then golf comes second and we work everything out in between.” Chasing her first win since 2002, Diaz is at 11-under 131, three shots ahead of Lee-Anne Pace and Lydia Ko. Diaz led by four shots over Pace and Austin Ernst after the first round. She was pleased her game was sturdy enough to hang on to the lead despite being in the heat of contention for the first time in several years. “It was just a challenge because I havent been in this position in a very long time,” Diaz said. “For sure, I havent had cameras on me in a long time.” So she took the opportunity to say hello to her kids — 8-year-old son Cooper and 4-year-old daughter Lilly. “(The cameras) get in my face and I dont really know what to do,” she said. “I said, Hi, kiddos. I love you. That kind of stuff.” She made sure the cameras stuck around with her strong play down the stretch. After a nine-birdie, no-bogey effort in the first round, she showed signs of faltering early on Friday. She had her first bogey of the tournament on the sixth hole to fall back into a tie with Pace and Ko, but then regained her touch after getting par on the next six holes. Starting at the 13th, she birdied four of the next six, including the par-5 closing hole. Diaz was a rising star early in her career, winning twice in 2002 and playing on four Solheim Cup teams. After she married Kevin Diaz, she found that she liked being a wife and mother more than travelling the world playing golf. She hasnt been in the top 20 of a tournament since 2010. Before the season she was torn between coming out on tour and staying home so as not to miss any of the daily routine. In the end, she decided to keep playing. “(It was) knowing that I could manage being a mom and play. I think thats something Ive struggled with, for, well eight years,” she said. "When I only had one (child) I think I got to a point where I was OK. But with two youve got twice as much to get done. Pace, a South African who is an alum of the University of Tulsa, is looking for a breakthrough win on American soil. After a 68, she couldnt contain herself. “Im very happy about (my) position,” said Pace, who has won eight times on the Ladies European Tour. “I would like to be in contention on the weekend. Thats when the fun starts, right?” The 17-year-old Ko is bidding for a second LPGA Tour title as a pro to go with the two she won as an amateur. She shot a second consecutive 67, turning in 1 under and then posting three birdies on the inward nine. The key, she said, was to keep her emotions in check. “I try and be calm. You know, thats what you have to do,” she said, sounding far older than a rookie. “Being overly happy or overly angry, thats not going to help me.” Lurking another shot back at 135 are 2012 Marathon winner So Yeon Ryu and Rebecca Lee-Bentham, both of whom shot 67s. Ryu was grouped with U.S. Open winner Michelle Wie and last weeks Womens British Open champion Mo Martin. A large gallery followed the threesome. “It was really great to be playing with the two major champions,” Ryu said. “I felt like I was one of the other major champions.” Brittany Lang had the days low round (66) and was at 136 along with Kayla Mortellaro. Cristie Kerr (67) led the pack of six golfers at 137. Defending champ Beatriz Recari of Spain followed a 70 with a 68 and was at 138 along with Martin, who shot a 71. Cammalleri scored two goals, Corban Knight netted the winner in a shootout, and the Flames erased a two-goal deficit in the third period to beat the Stars 4-3 on Friday night.TORONTO — Needing a win to assure an MLS playoff berth without the assistance of others, the Montreal Impact were wretched Saturday. Again. The victim of a woeful first-half performance, the Impact were beaten 1-0 by a Toronto team that started the day 23 points behind its Canadian rival. Robert Earnshaw scored his team-leading eighth goal of the season in the 16th minute for Toronto (6-17-11), which could have led by three after the first 45 minutes of the regular-season finale for both clubs. Earnshaw celebrated with his trademark somersault, followed by a matador salute. Once a force in the East, the Impact have collected four of a possible 24 points available over their last eight games (1-6-1). “The first half, we werent very good,” said Impact coach Marco Schallibaum. "A lot of mistakes, a lot of tension. There were errors. “The second half was better. Not much better, but better. There were also chances to score, maybe (make it) 1-1. But it was not good enough to win this game today. And thats a pity” Just how much of a pity will become clear Sunday. Montreal (14-13-7, 49 points) will be out if Houston beats D.C. United, New England defeats Columbus and Chicago beats or ties New York. It could be worse, but the Impact could have rendered Sundays results meaningless had they shown up Saturday. Asked if he is confident he will get the results he needs, Schallibaum replied: “Thats not up to us. we must now wait for the last game. And then we make the calculation.” With just Toronto, D.C. United and the Columbus Crew eliminated from playoff contention and New York and Sporting Kansas City already in, it made for a complicated final weekend in the East with Montreal, Chicago, New England, Houston and Philadelphia vying for the final three playoff berths. Philadelphia was ousted after losing 2-1 to Sporting Kansas City earlier in the day. The Union had needed a win and help from other teams. Chicago (49 points), Houston (48) and New England (48) all get their chance Sunday. The Impact went into the weekend in the best position, tied with Chicago on points but well ahead in the next tiebreaker (goals for). There was little on the line for Toronto other than pride — and the chance to pick up a sixth win, one more than last season when the team went 5-21-8. For rookie manager Ryan Nelsen, it was a performance that showed a taste of things to come after a bumpy season. “This team, from the first day I came in, we were in a black hole — we were in a monster black hole,” he said. “So big I didnt think we were going to be able to get out of it in just a year. I thought it would take two or three, to tell you the truth.” Nelsen said he was prepared to take the criticism this season while building for the future. “All I wanted to do this year is produce exciting young players, develop them. Get away our (salary cap) debut as a club, which weve done. And now weve laid a nice foundation where we can move forward. Which I dont think weve really had in the past.” Nelsen said there is still a huge job ahead. But he likes what he sees. “Weve evolved as a young team, weve matured,” he said. It was a “win and youre in” game for Montreal but there was little sense of urgency from the visitors despite the cheers of a phalanx of Impact suppporters squeezed in the corner of the east stand of BMO Field.dddddddddddd. After a sluggish start by both teams, Toronto began to take control. At times Toronto players were queuing up to take a shot. Outshot 10-5 in the first half (5-0 in shots on target), the Impact managed 10 shots in the second but only three were on target. Montreal made changes in the second half and began to finally test the Toronto defence. The Impact outshot Toronto 10-6 in the second half but only put three shots on target to Torontos two. When Montreal did find its aim, Toronto goalkeeper Joe Bendik was equal to the task. He stopped Davey Arnaud at point-blank range in the 53rd minute. And he robbed Andres Romero in the 88th minute. Montreal misfired the rest of the time. A 62nd-minute goal by Marco Di Vaio was called off due to apparent handball. Three minutes later, substitute Andrea Pisanu headed just wide. Andrew Wenger shot wide from in front of the net in the 72nd minute. Torontos goal had a hint of luck about it but was nevertheless deserved as the home side began to launch attacks with rookie Canadian midfielders Jonathan Osorio and Kyle Bekker pulling the strings while dominating Montreals Hernan Bernadello and Felipe. Toronto striker Bright Dikes physical presence also disrupted the Montreal defence. The bull-like forward set the table for the Earnshaw goal. After Dike tormented a pair of Montreal defenders, the ball squibbed free to Osorio whose right-footed shot was redirected in by Earnshaw, catching goalie Troy Perkins going the wrong way. Earnshaw had a fine chance in the 33rd when he and Dike broke in side-by-side down the middle during a defensive breakdown. Perkins saved the day, making a fine point-blank save. The Impact goalie was forced to make a fingertip save off Osorio seconds later as Montreals defence — missing the injured Alessandro Nesta — continued to crumble. Bekker hit the crossbar in the 38th minute from outside the penalty box. Perkins then had to tip an Earnshaw shot over the bar in the 43rd minute. Toronto came close early in the second half with a header from skipper Steven Caldwell deflecting off the bar. Caldwell had another chance in the 82nd minute off a corner but a Montreal defender made a goal-line clearance. “The only thing that disappointed me was we didnt get that second goal,” said Nelsen. Toronto was coming off a 1-0 loss in Chicago, a defeat that stretched its league road scoring drought to six hours 45 minutes. Toronto has failed to make the playoffs since entering the league in 2007. While it has been another long season for TFC supporters, there may be light at the end of the tunnel. Nelsen will be less constrained by the salary cap next season and the team says it is willing to spend big on marquee strikers in the January transfer window. The club can also point to a corps of talented youngsters. Saturdays starting 11 featured seven players 25 or younger. A black cat ran across the north goal prior to the game. Perhaps coincidentally that goal needed some repair work prior to kickoff, resulting in a kickoff delay of about five minutes. A tuque giveaway was doubtless appreciated by the fans on a chilly overcast, seven-degree afternoon at the Toronto lakefront. The sun eventually came out but it was still a raw day for the announced crowd of 13,211. ORLANDO, Fla. – As further proof the NFL never is far from the headlines, owners could make plenty of news this week at their spring meetings. They will consider 13 playing rules proposals and seven bylaws. They will discuss expanding the playoff field from 12 to 14 teams, although a vote on such a move is uncertain. Some changes would seem to be slam dunks: extending the height of the goal posts 5 feet to help determine if kicks are good; eliminating overtime in preseason games; placing fixed TV cameras on the goal lines, end lines and sidelines to help with replay reviews. Others seem almost sidebars to the real action, such as from where to enforce defensive penalties when they occur behind the line of scrimmage, or extending pass interference calls to within a yard of the line. Perhaps the juiciest suggestions came from the Patriots. They want to move the line of scrimmage to the 25 for extra points, and to allow coaches to challenge any calls except on scoring plays, which are automatically reviewed. Passing those proposals would make for a major change in how NFL games are played. “We discussed a lot of different scenarios that have been raised,” Rams coach Jeff Fisher, co-chairman of the influential competition committee, said of longer extra-point kicks. "I will point out … last year we had five tries missed (out of 1,267). I think four were blocked, one was missed. Its still a competitive play. “We are going to propose … to the membership during one of the preseason weeks that we move the extra point back to the 20-yard line and see how that goes. Its on our radar.” New Englands idea on coaches challenges in some ways echoes college football, in which every play can be reviewed. Falcons President Rich McKay, the other co-chairman of the competition committee, said reviews or challenges on defensive pass interference calls have been considered before. “Weve always shied away, as a committee, from penalties and the review of penalties for the most basic reason,” McKay said. “We didnt want to put the referee in the position of using his subjective judgment on a play in place of the on-field official. We always thought the intent of replay, when it was put back in in 1998, was to deal with plays where there was an objective standard.” Washington has proposed making personal foul penalties reviewable. How replay reviews are conducted overall will be discussed after the committee has proposed allowing the referee to consult with members of the NFL officiating department. The process wont change, but the command centre in New York headed by director of officiating Dean Blandino will already be reviewing the play when the referee gets to the replay monitor. “At the end of the day, whats going to happen is were going to make sure that every single review is correct and we feel like this will speed up the instant replay process and timing,” Fisher said. The Redskins want kickoffs moved to the 40 yard-line for “safety and historic consistency,” although doing so might totally eliminate returns. But some coaches hint it could lead to more pooch kicks, which wouldnt make the kickoff any safer. Another suggestion is to eliminate stopping the clock on a sack. That no longer is done in the final two minutes of each half, and if passed it will be totally eliminated. The Redskins also proposed raising the number of active players on game day from 46 to 49 for games on any day but Sunday or Monday — not including opening weekend. Washington seeks an increase in the practice squad limit from eight to 10 players; allowing trades after the Super Bowl until when the league year begins in March; eliminating the first preseason roster cut to 75 and having just one cut to 53 at the end of the preseason; and allowing more than one player to return from injured reserve during the season after six weeks on the list. ___ AP NFL website: www.pro32.ap.org and www.twitter.com/AP_NFL nfl jerseys china . — Jayce Hawryluks second goal of the game with 29 seconds left lifted the Brandon Wheat Kings past the Regina Pats 5-4 in Western Hockey League play Wednesday. Kyle Shanahan was hired as offensive co-ordinator Monday after spending the previous four years in the same role with the Washington Redskins. Pettine, hired Jan. 23 to replace Rob Chudzinski, is in his first job as an NFL head coach. His experience is as a defensive assistant, so he will rely heavily on Shanahan, whos been a co-ordinator for the last six seasons and has 10 years as an NFL assistant. An experienced co-ordinator is crucial as Cleveland tries to turn around its fortunes. The Browns, who had four offensive players in the Pro Bowl, are expected to select a quarterback early in Mays draft and Shanahan will have a hand in his development. Shanahan, 34, got his first job as a co-ordinator in 2008 when he was hired by Houston at 28 years old. After two seasons there, he joined his father, Mike, head coach of the Washington Redskins. Both Shanahans spent four seasons with Washington before being fired Dec. 30 after a 3-13 season. They also clashed with quarterback Robert Griffin III. But Kyle Shanahan brings a strong resume to the Browns. His offences have ranked in the top 10 in the NFL in yardage four of his six seasons as a co-ordinator, includinng the last two in Washington.dddddddddddd Shanahan ran a version of the West Coast Offense, incorporating the pistol formation and read option, and the Redskins in 2012 became the first team in NFL history to pass for 3,400 yards and rush for 2,700. They led the league in yards per play (6.17), won the rushing title and Griffin set league rookie records for passer rating (102.4), interception percentage (1.27) and rushing yards by a quarterback (815). The record slipped in 2013, but the Redskins ranked ninth in total yards per game (369.7) and fifth in rushing (135.3). Receiver Pierre Garcon set a franchise record and led the NFL with 113 receptions. The Browns interviewed Raiders quarterbacks coach John DeFilippo on Thursday. Shanahan replaces veteran co-ordinator and three-time head coach Norv Turner. The Browns allowed him to explore other jobs after Chudzinski was fired, and Turner was hired as co-ordinator by new Vikings coach Mike Zimmer. The Cleveland offence ranked 27th in scoring (19.3 points per game), 18th in total yardage (338.9), 11th passing (252.5) and tied for 27th rushing (86.4). Last week, Pettine hired Jim ONeil as defensive co-ordinator and retained special teams co-ordinator Chris Tabor.
