Téma: Jak postupovat / contract for the 2014 season. Ramon, WINNIPEG — They lost out on the Henry Burris sweepstakes but the Winnipeg Blue Bombers didnt wait long to land another quarterback, acquiring Drew Willy Thursday from the Grey Cup-champion Saskatchewan Roughriders for Canadian receiver and Regina native Jade Etienne. Winnipeg also signed Willy to an extension, reportedly for two years. He was scheduled to become a free agent next week and will be unveiled by the Blue Bombers on Friday at Investors Group Field. “Drew is a quarterback we have always thought had very high potential in this league,” said Winnipeg GM Kyle Walters. “He immediately upgrades us at this position and we really look forward to him being a part of the Winnipeg Blue Bombers moving forward.” But is he a starter who can win regularly, something a team that finished with a league-worst 3-15 record last season so desperately needs? Playing behind Darian Durant, Willy doesnt have a lot of experience. He posted a 2-2 record in his two seasons with the Roughriders and, at least on paper right now, is competing for the starters job with Max Hall and Justin Goltz. The six-foot-three, 215-pound Willy was 32-of-52 passing last season for 474 yards with four touchdowns and one interception. He saw more action in 2012, completing 69-of-95 passes for 709 yards, five TDs and four interceptions. Riders coach Corey Chamblin, named the CFLs coach of the year Wednesday after leading Saskatchewan to a their fourth Grey Cup title, has praised Willy for his composure. Willy wasnt Winnipegs first choice. He joins the Blue Bombers after they lost out to the expansion Ottawa Redblacks for the services of free-agent Burris, the CFLs passing leader last season who was released by the Hamilton Tiger-Cats. Hall became Winnipegs starter last year as the Bombers struggled through a series of quarterbacks and traded veteran Buck Pierce to the B.C. Lions. Goltz, who had been considered by many to be the teams future, failed to measure up when he finally got his shot. Willy, 27, is a native of Randolph, N.J., who spent some time in the NFL on practice squads in Indianapolis, Baltimore, San Diego, and New York and played in the UFL with Las Vegas in 2010. “I am really excited to join the Blue Bomber organization,” he said in a statement. "The support the team gets from the province of Manitoba is remarkable. “With such a deep history, the fans, the new stadium, and the direction the team wants to go, its going to be a great place to play. The people within the organization have shown genuine interest in me, and as a player, you cant ask for anything more.” He started two games in 2013, going 1-1. He earned his first CFL win as a rookie in a come-from behind victory at Winnipeg in the Banjo Bowl, where he completed 17-of-23 for 188 yards and a touchdown and ran for another. Willy played at the University of Buffalo, where he was the most prolific passer in school history, setting records for completions (849), attempts (1,322), yards (8,748), touchdowns (52), total offence (8,639), and completion percentage (64.2). “He is a quarterback with great promise in our league,” said Danny McManus, himself a Canadian Football Hall of Fame quarterback and Winnipegs new assistant general manager and director of U.S. scouting. "Drew has the attitude and determination you look for at the quarterback position. “He is physically and mentally tough, and can endure the challenges a quarterback faces, day in, and day out.” Etienne, 24, was an off-the-board first round pick of the Blue Bombers in the 2011 draft and after three CFL seasons had 20 receptions for 276 yards and two TDs. But he didnt see a lot of action until 2013 when he had 19 catches for 265 yards and the two touchdowns. Like Willy, Etienne was set to become a free agent next week. Aaron would eventually close out his career with 755 home runs, taking his place on the throne as baseballs home run king. When Aaron hit a 1-0 fastball that night, he not only powered his way into the annals of baseball history, but onto the pages of American history, as well. An African-American player held what was, at the time, the most prodigious record in all of North-American sports. Aarons incredible milestone was a large step in the fight for racial equality in baseball, and across America, but it was a step that may not have occurred if it were not for # 42, Jackie Robinson. Twenty-Seven years prior to Aarons record breaking home run, Jackie Robinson stepped onto Ebbets Field, becoming the first African-American to play in the Major Leagues since the 1880s. April 15th, 1947 was undoubtedly a day of celebration for many across North America, but it also marked the beginning of a long, arduous journey for Robinson. Robinson endured through 10 seasons of racial abuse, unjust criticism, as well as threats on his life, from spectators, other players and even teammates. While professional athletes are often expected to perform under the pressures of a fanbases high expectations, Robinson carried a much heavier weight than the average ballplayer, an entirre race of people depended upon him.dddddddddddd In his first few seasons, Robinson knew if retaliated against his aggressors, he would risk delaying the breaking of the colour barrier. Instead, Robinson responded with his play on the field, showcasing his five-tool talent on his way to becoming one of the greatest second baseman that ever lived. For the past 10 seasons, April 15th has been a day where Major League Baseball pays tribute to the legacy of Jackie Robinson. Today, every Major League player will pay homage to Robinson by dawning his iconic #42, unifying under one number. To celebrate the 10th-annual Jackie Robinson Day, BarDown presents to you, three songs written in tribute for three of the most iconic African-American baseball players in history: Willie Mays, Hank Aaron and, of course, Jackie Robinson.“Did You See Jackie Robinson Hit That Ball?” – Buddy Johnson"There is not an American free in this country until everyone of us is free." – Jackie Robinson"Say Hey (The Willie Mays Song)" – The Treniers"To make it into the majors and to take all the name calling, he had to be something special. He had to take all this for years, not just for Jackie Robinson, but for the nation." – Willie Mays"715" – Peter Cooper"As Ive said many times, and Ill say it again, Jackie Robinson was a pillar of strength to me." – Hank Aaron cheap nfl jerseys cheap jerseys ’ ’ ’ |

Téma: Jak postupovat / And Hood then followed that w DALLAS — Monta Ellis scored 26 points, Dirk Nowitzki added 21 and the Dallas Mavericks pulled away from the Denver Nuggets in the fourth quarter of a 122-106 victory Friday night. The Mavericks avoided a season sweep by the Nuggets, who ran away with a win in Denver two weeks ago to hand Dallas its longest losing streak at three games. Dallas (42-28) got a boost in the playoff race when Miami rallied from seven down in the last 3 1/2 minutes to beat Memphis 91-86 Friday night. The Mavericks and Grizzlies (40-28) started the day in a virtual tie for the final post-season spot in the Western Conference. Vince Carter shook off a dislocated pinkie on his left hand in the first quarter to finish with 13. J.J. Hickson led Denver with 18 points and eight rebounds before leaving with an apparent injury in the fourth quarter. Ty Lawson had 17 points and nine assists after missing a game with a sinus infection, and Randy Foye scored 15, all on 3-pointers. The Mavericks led by 15 early in the fourth quarter but couldnt put the Nuggets away until late. Denver was within 99-96 after a 3-pointer and dunk from Dallas native Darrell Arthur, who had nine of his 11 points in the second half. But Nowitzki hit back-to-back fadeaway jumpers and Brandan Wright and Shawn Marion took turns feeding each other for baskets, the last one Marions dunk for a 109-99 lead with 4 minutes to go. Wright, a 6-foot-10 centre, had all three of his assists in a 4-minute stretch of the fourth quarter and finished with 13 points. Marion scored 14 as the Mavericks had seven players in double figures. Ellis, who scored 12 straight Dallas points to force overtime in a loss to Minnesota on Wednesday, ran off eight straight to put the Nuggets away and clinch a winning season after a 12-year run of winning records ended with a 41-41 mark last season. Ellis was 11-of-14 shooting and had seven assists. Hickson helped keep Denver close with 10 second-half points and was four shy of his season high against the Mavericks in November before going out. The Mavericks avoided the slow starts that plagued them the last time they played Denver and in an overtime loss to Minnesota, another West also-ran, in their last game. Jae Crowder really got Dallas going in the second quarter, going 4 of 4 from 3-point range, including three straight Dallas baskets that put the Mavericks up 50-36. Averaging 4.7 points per game coming in, Crowder led Dallas in the first half with 12 points but didnt attempt another shot. NOTES: The teams combined to go 25 of 52 from 3-point range. The Nuggets had 13 from long range and the Mavericks had 12. The season high is 12 for both teams. … Nuggets C Kenneth Faried got a technical in the third quarter after colliding with Jose Calderon and knocking the Dallas guard to the floor. … The Nuggets swept the season series with Dallas in 2008-09 and won four straight over the 2010-11 and 2011-12 seasons. … The Mavericks recalled G Gal Mekel from the Texas Legends of the D-League. Spieth again showed game well beyond his 20 years with a 9-under 63 on the North Course, giving him a one-shot lead over Stewart Cink going into the weekend at the Farmers Insurance Open. DURHAM, N.C. — If this was Jabari Parkers last home game at Duke, what a farewell it was. The freshman phenom scored a season-high 30 points and added 11 rebounds in the fourth-ranked Blue Devils 93-81 win over No. 14 North Carolina on Saturday night. In leading Duke in both scoring and rebounding all season, he hasnt looked like a first-year player very often. And he doesnt want to be called one, either. “No more freshman,” he said. “I dont like getting in that category anymore because my team needs me more than just an 18-year-old. They need somebody with experience through the whole game. … Its time to grow up.” Rodney Hood added 24 points to help Duke (24-7, 13-5) end the Tar Heels 12-game winning streak and clinch the No. 3 seed in the Atlantic Coast Conference tournament. Duke never trailed, shot 51 per cent — 57 per cent in the second half — and dominated the ACCs best team on the glass, outrebounding North Carolina 34-20. “I think at the end of the day, it just came down to our want-to against their want-to, and it just wasnt there — the sense of urgency,” North Carolina big man James Michael McAdoo said. Marcus Paige — who led UNCs second-half comeback two weeks ago — finished this one with 24 points, while Brice Johnson had 15 and McAdoo added 13 for the Tar Heels (23-8, 13-5). They shot nearly 60 per cent but couldnt overcome their disadvantage on the glass and are locked into the No. 4 seed in the league tournament. Leslie McDonald added 12 points for North Carolina, which was denied its fourth win over a top-five team, but briefly made things tense in the final minutes when Paige converted a four-point play to make it 81-73 with 2:50 left. But the Tar Heels point guard missed 3s on the next two possessions — with Parker blocking the second of those with 2 1/2 minutes left. Quinn Cook hit two free throws, Amile Jefferson added another and Parker hit two foul shots with 2:03 left to push the lead to 86-73 and effectively end it. Cook finished with 11 points and Rasheed Sulaimon added 10. And in what might have been his finale at Cameron Indoor Stadium, Parker put on quite a show. “Its hard to say what it is,” North Carolina coach Roy Williams said, referring to an intangible quality coach Mike Krzyzewski had chided Duke for being without in its loss to UNC. “But whatever the hell it is, Jabari found it,” Williams added. Parker hit 10 of his 17 shots, cracked his previous high of 29 points set last month at Boston College and showed off all the skills that have him as a likely high NBA draft pick — should he decide to forgo his finnal three seasons of college eligibility and turn pro.dddddddddddd But he says he has time to make that decision. “Mostly what Im focusing on is to do as much as possible with these guys (during) my time here,” Parker said. Parker set the tone early by converting repeatedly around the rim, and he hit two of his four attempts from 3-point range — including one from the corner that gave Duke its largest lead, 74-55, with 8 1/2 minutes left. “I just thought he had his best spirit to score tonight that hes had all season, because theyre really good, and at times he just wasnt going to be denied,” Krzyzewski said. “And then, boom, boom, boom, you hit those 3s (and) that lead can go to double digits quick.” Indeed, when those 3s are falling, the Blue Devils are tough to beat. When theyre not, Duke is usually in trouble. The Blue Devils were only 5 of 22 from long range in their 74-66 loss in Chapel Hill. They made just 6 of 27 from beyond the arc in a 10-point loss at Wake Forest on Wednesday night. In this one, Duke missed 12 of its first 14 3-pointers and held a tenuous 47-39 lead when pesky senior guard Tyler Thornton picked up his fourth foul with 17:11 left. Cook came on to replace him and immediately hit a straightaway 3 that started the Blue Devils big burst. “It was good to see the ball go in for the first time,” Cook said, adding that Parker “told me he was going to hit me as soon as I came in the game. Thats just the trust we have in each other.” Andre Dawkins followed with another one from the corner to help the Blue Devils open up a 53-41 lead. Parker then added a jumper and two free throws before Cook hit and up-and-under layup. And Hood then followed that with a 3 with 14 minutes left to give Duke its largest lead to that point, 62-46. That shot whipped an already amped-up Cameron crowd — which included Dallas Cowboys coach Jason Garrett and his quarterback, an apparent Blue Devils fan, Tony Romo cheering enthusiastically from behind the scorers table — into an absolute frenzy. There were plenty of famous faces in the crowd for the latest renewal of college basketballs fiercest rivalry: NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell — wearing a Duke sweater — watched from one baseline, while former Oklahoma coaches Barry Switzer and Billy Tubbs sat on the other one. And Hood and Parker kept them entertained all night. “Jabari was sensational, and so was Rodney,” Krzyzewski said. “This is the first game where the two of them were sensational together. Theyve both been good together, but they were sensational together.” cheap nfl jerseys cheap jerseys ’ ’ ’ |

He might not NEW YORK, N.Y. – Major League Baseballs No. 2 executive testified that the sport wasnt concerned if the head of a Florida clinic distributed performance-enhancing drugs to minors because MLBs sole interest was his relationship with players under investigation, a person familiar with the Alex Rodriguez grievance hearing told The Associated Press. MLB chief operating officer Rob Manfred testified this week and was asked by Rodriguezs lawyers about documents indicating Biogenesis of America founder Anthony Bosch had given PEDs to high school students, the person said Saturday, speaking on condition of anonymity because the testimony is confidential. Manfred said he assumed, based on documents in MLBs possession and media reports, that Bosch had distributed illegal substances to minors, but he never asked Bosch about it. Manfred also said MLB was interested only in possible criminal activity involving players, the person said. Bosch agreed to co-operate with MLBs investigation, and 14 players in all were suspended this summer. Rodriguez was given the harshest penalty, a 211-game suspension announced Aug. 5. The players association filed a grievance to overturn the suspension of the New York Yankees third baseman, and arbitrator Fredric Horowitz has presided over eight days of hearings in the case, which is scheduled to resume the week of Nov. 18. Federal and Florida authorities have begun investigations of the now-closed clinic. As part of a June 3 agreement between Bosch and MLB, part of which was read to the AP, MLB promised to inform federal and state law enforcement agencies of Boschs co-operation and its value in ridding baseball of PEDs. The Daily News reported Saturday that Rodriguez paid $305,000 for evidence, an allegation denied by a spokesman for the three-time AL MVP. The newspaper said Rodriguez and his representatives confirmed the payments during testimony. Citing an unidentified source familiar the proceedings, the News reported Rodriguez and his surrogates spent the money to purchase evidence that included videotapes, documents and affidavits. “Its not true and as usual not only are certain parties leaking information but they are leaking false information,” Rodriguez spokesman Ron Berkowitz said in an email to the AP. Porter Fischer, the former Biogenesis associate who gave the Miami New Times documents last winter that sparked Major League Baseballs investigation, said in July he turned down MLBs $125,000 offer for evidence but he did receive $5,500 in cash. A player drafted from a mediocre crop this week likely wont make an immediate impact. So general manager Peter Chiarelli plans some small changes to improve the team that exited the playoffs earlier than expected. “We had a very good team and, with a little bit of tweaking, I feel well be right back where we were in the past,” he said Monday. The Bruins won the Stanley Cup in 2010-11, reached the Cup finals in 2012-13, led the NHL in regular-season points in 2013-14 then eliminated the Detroit Red Wings in a five-game series. But they lost the next round to the Montreal Canadiens in seven games after going up 3-2. Chiarellis big task now is to re-sign Jarome Iginla after he tied for the team lead with 30 goals in his first season with Boston. “Im not going to comment specifically on negotiations,” Chiarelli said in a conference call. “Wed like to sign Jarome and thats what I can say. I mean, he has been a valuable player for us. I think there is a good fit.” Iginla is one of five Bruins who can become unrestricted free agents when the signing period begins July 1. The others are backup goalie Chad Johnson, defencemen Andrej Meszaros and Corey Potter, both late-season acquisitions, and forward Shawn Thornton, who has been told by Chiarelli he wont be re-signed. “There may be one or two more” among those free agents who he wont re-sign, Chiarelli said. Forward Reilly Smith and defenceman Torey Krug can become restricted free agents. Top free agents from other teams include forwards Marian Gaborik, Thomas Vanek and Paul Stastny. “There are good players available,” Chiarelli said. “Were not going to go full force into the free agency. Were probably going to take a step back and look at what may be lesser deals, meaning not high-profile deals, might be available, parrtially due to (salary) cap reasons, partially due to chemistry reasons.dddddddddddd” A few hours later, Chiarelli announced that the Bruins had signed goalie Niklas Svedberg to a one-year contract. He played the only NHL game of his career in a 3-2 overtime win over the Nashville Predators on Jan. 2. With the Bruins AHL team in Providence last season, he was 25-15-4 with a 2.63 goals-against average. He had 37 wins for Providence the previous season. The Bruins have the 25th pick in the two-day draft starting Friday in Philadelphia. With four solid lines, a capable defence and young players bidding for playing time, any players drafted arent likely to help the Bruins next season. The draft “is generally considered, and I would agree, a thinner draft,” Chiarelli said. “So there is not as much value, relatively speaking, placed in these picks. So teams will probably be more apt to move those picks around” through trades. Thornton spent seven seasons with the Bruins, providing toughness and leadership. He might not be the only player to leave who is part of the teams successful veteran core. “The decision on Shawn was a very hard one. Hes been here and part of this group for a long time and that would apply to all these guys who have been here and who have given us good service and that have been part of winning teams and Cup-winning teams,” Chiarelli said. “So there will be hard choices, but it may be that we dont make hard choices and we keep as many people as we can and we go into the year and maybe we do make those hard choices as the year progresses.” For now, Chiarelli is focusing on the draft. “I read about a bunch of (solid) centermen and were not in the market for any centerman,” he said. Defencemen also “are becoming a major topic of conversation.” He might even trade his first-round pick. “Everything is always available,” Chiarelli said. Téma: Jak postupovat / st since he joined Vancouver mi CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Al Jefferson knows few people will be giving the Charlotte Bobcats a chance to upset the Miami Heat in the first round of the Eastern Conference playoffs. That doesnt matter to the veteran centre. “They didnt give us a chance in October, if you remember,” Jefferson said. “We were going to be last in the league, right? So we dont worry about what is said outside of these walls right here.” The Bobcats defeated the Chicago Bulls 91-86 in overtime on Wednesday night to finish the season 43-39 and as the seventh seed in the East. Not bad for a team that was a combined 28-120 over the previous two seasons. But now there is the monumental task of beating the two-time defending NBA champions, something the Bobcats havent done in the LeBron James era. The Heat are 15-0 against the Bobcats since James signed. “Its going to be a challenge, but its the playoffs and anything can happen,” Bobcats guard Kemba Walker said. “Its not going to be easy. Were going to go out there and give it all we got just like we have been doing all year.” The series starts on Sunday. “Its going to be a dogfight,” Jefferson said. The Bulls finished as the No. 4 seed in the East and will face the Washington in the first round after the Wizards leap-frogged the Brooklyn Nets on the final night of the season to grab the fifth spot. “They are a great transition team with a lot of shooters and size,” Bulls forward Carlos Boozer said. “To make the playoffs you have to be a good team, and theyre a good team.” After missing a jumper that would have won the game in regulation, Walker scored eight of his 22 points in overtime to help the Bobcats beat the Bulls for the first time this season and finish the regular season with eight wins in their final nine games. Jefferson added 10 points and 18 rebounds for Charlotte, and Chris Douglas-Roberts finished with 13 points after being held scoreless for the first three quarters. Josh McRoberts made a key play in overtime, his block of D.J. Augustins 3-point attempt leading to a fast-break layup by Walker that gave the Bobcats an 88-81 lead with 1 minute left. “This was the type of game we needed going into the playoffs,” Jefferson said. “Thats a playoff team and thats a playoff game that we played tonight.” Joakim Noah finished with 14 points and 13 rebounds for Chicago, Boozer added 14 points and 11 rebounds, and Augustin scored 17 points. The Bulls came in having won 10 of their last 11 against the Bobcats, including five straight in Charlotte by an average of 22 points per game. And it looked early on like this would be another road blowout for Michael Jordans former team. The Bobcats started the game cold, missing 21 of their first 29 shots from the field to fall behind 33-23. But Jefferson hit a short jumper and the Bobcats made 11 straight shots to take 43-37 lead at halftime. After a back-and-forth third quarter, the Bulls entered the final period leading 60-59. Every time Chicago attempted to pull away, Douglas-Roberts seemed to have an answer. Two nights after a buzzer-beater to sink the Atlanta Hawks, Douglas-Roberts had 12 points in the fourth period, including a left-handed layup off an offensive rebound with 3:42 left to tie the game at 75. After Taj Gibson missed a jumper with 25 seconds left, Walker had a chance to win the game but missed an open step-back jumper from 18 feet at the buzzer. “I had a great look at it,” Walker said. “Just missed it.” Walkers big overtime helped the Bobcats improve to 20-9 since the All-Star break. “The guys have done a great job,” Bobcats coach Steve Clifford said. “We wont think about it right now, but when we reflect back on the year we will. We didnt have a definitive number because I didnt know how good we could be. Its a good group and hopefully we have a lot more in us. It was good to see the locker room tonight. Theyve worked hard. Theyve been grinding from the jump.” NOTES: Jefferson was taken to the locker room for observations with a left knee contusion midway through the third quarter. He did return to the game and played the entire fourth quarter. … With the win, the Bobcats avoided a season series sweep by the Bulls. He says Irving was not consulted on Browns future and any insinuation that he pushed to have him fired is "patently false. VANCOUVER — Its early yet, but the Vancouver Whitecaps are showing signs that they will be more of an attacking team this season. Kenny Miller scored two goals as the Whitecaps opened the 2014 Major League Soccer campaign with a 4-1 victory over the New York Red Bulls on Saturday before a sellout crowd of 21,000 at B.C. Place Stadium. “Were absolutely delighted with the way weve played,” said Miller. “A lot of the things that we worked on in the pre-season really came into fruition today.” The Whitecaps had been concerned with how their offence would shape up after losing 2013 MLS scoring leader Camilo Sanvezzo to a Mexican League team this off-season. Miller scored on a penalty-kick in the 34th minute and a breakaway in the 70th while second-half substitute Pedro Morales had a goal and an assist. Sebastian Fernandez also scored for the Whitecaps, who missed the playoffs in 2013. Bradley Wright-Phillips scored for New York with only two minutes left in the game. The Red Bulls placed first overall in the regular season last year but were ousted early in the playoffs. Carl Robinson, who pledged during the pre-season to put more offence in Vancouvers game, posted his first regular-season win as Vancouvers head coach following two years as an assistant to Martin Rennie. “I think it was written in the stars, the way the first game came out, and it was my old team, things like that,” said Robinson, a former Red Bulls player and assistant coach. “But its just the beginning.” Despite starting eight returnees, Robinson succeeded in his quest to create more scoring opportunities from mid-field as new midfielders Fernandez and Morales also hit the scoresheet. Vancouvers midfield play has been the subject of intense criticism the past two seasons. But the Whitecaps controlled play in the middle of the pitch for most of the game, generating several chances in the first half that were missed or stopped by New York goalkeeper Luis Robles, who kept the score lower than it could have been. Vancouver had 10 shots on target compared to New Yorks four. The Whitecaps put six shots on target in the first half. “Its what the boss (Robinson) wants,” said Miller. “He wants them to be up against it. He wants us (forwards) to be pressing from the front and working hard.” The Whitecaps remained unbeaten in five all-time meetings with the Red Bulls, who only put four shots on target in the game. The Red Bulls showed signs of fatigue in the second half after a long travel day from the East Coast on Friday. But defender Richard Eckersley, who made his regular-season debut along with fellow fullback Bobby Convey after an off-season trade from Toronto, said the long trip was not a factor. “We cant use excuses,” said Eckersley. “We got well beaten today.” Miller opened the scoring on a penalty-kick in the 34th minute aas he sent a shot into one corner while Robles went the other way.dddddddddddd The spot kick was awarded after Eckersley was called for a hand-ball in New Yorks box off a Matias Laba shot. Fernandez, a 24-year-old Montevideo, Uruguay native, who played with Perus First Division champion Universitario de Deportes last season, gave the Whitecaps a 2-0 lead early in the second half. He fired a shot from about 25 yards out into the top right corner of the net in the 49th minute. “It was just a good strike,” said Eckersley, who was marking the Whitecap closely on the play. “What can you do?” Robles got his hand on the shot, but could not stop the ball from going in. Vancouver went ahead 3-0 as Morales sent Miller a long lead ball from deep in Vancouver territory. Miller ran onto it well beyond defenders and lobbed a bouncing ball over a helpless Robles. “I think weve seen, with (Morales) coming on, his vision — his awareness in whats going on,” said Miller. "There were a couple little flips out of the corner. Thats not by chance. He knows theres a guy in space and, obviously, that pass on my second goal was a sublime pass. But hes finished as well. “Weve seen flashes of him playing (25) minutes, but Im really excited about, hopefully, playing alongside him a lot more,” said Miller. Morales, a 28-year-old Chilean who played in Spains La Liga the past two seasons, put the Whitecaps ahead 4-0 in the 89th minute as he fired in Nigel Reo-Cokers rolling pass from the right flank from outside the New York box. The only disappointed Whitecap, albeit slightly, was goalkeeper David Ousted, who had a quiet second half before Wright-Phillips spoiled his shutout bid. Ousted, who robbed Peguy Luyindula in the 12th minute, deflecting a hard shot off a goalpost and out of play, said the game was one of his easiest since he joined Vancouver midway through 2013. “Too bad about the (missed) clean sheet,” he said. “We wanted a clean shot and I thought we deserved one.” But Ousted was still pleased with Vancouvers offence and a steady defensive effort against a New York lineup that included star Australian striker Tim Cahill. “It was one of those games where I thought we were in control,” he said. Notes: The Red Bulls will host their home opener next Saturday against Colorado, while the Whitecaps visit Chivas U.S.A. in the Los Angeles suburb of Carson, Calif., on Sunday. … The Whitecaps have won all four of their MLS season openers. a Ex-English Premier League star Thierry Henry, who does not like playing on artificial turf, did not make the road trip with the Red Bulls. a Ousteds high punt in added time got caught up in the B.C. flag hanging from the bottom of the giant scoreboard at midfield. a The game was officiated by replacement officials as MLS regulars were locked out due to a labour dispute. The Missouri Tigers Defensive End and SEC Defensive player of the year is eligible for the upcoming NFL draft in May. CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Michael Jordans Bobcats have a new marketing slogan this season: “Tougher, Faster, Stronger.” New coach Mike Dunlap knows his team will need to be all of that and more if the Bobcats hope to be bounce back from a disastrous 7-59 season — the worst winning percentage (.106) in NBA history — in which they lost 20 games by at least 20 points. Dunlap, who has brought a hands-on, no-nonsense approach, believes Charlotte has enough talent to be competitive but said his team may need to play an unorthodox style to keep up with the NBAs best teams like Miami, Oklahoma City and Boston. To Dunlap that means playing an up-tempo style game and using his teams young legs to his advantage. While a lot of NBA teams run pick and rolls off what are referred to as “static sets” on offence — where players set up in certain spots and run off that formation — Dunlap said that system wont fly with his team. “Were not good enough to do that,” Dunlap said during the Bobcats media day. "We have to go into the pick and roll game on the move so that we keep the defence moving. A lot of time the older players in the NBA dont like a cutting offence to deal with. They have to drop and see ball and man and do all of these things and the have to move. “The point is our talent is good enough to be competitive both offensively and defensively but we have to bring a different package to the NBA because we dont have that kind of talent where we can sit them on their spots and allow our opponents to rest. We have to go after them in a fitness way and I believe we can do that, especially with what management has done with youth. Theyve given us a lot of young legs and Im here to use those legs.” Dunlap also said the Bobcats plan to play a disruptive, pressure-style defence. “We want to be a hard scout for teams,” he said. Thats one of the reasons Dunlap and his staff have had players working overtime on their conditioning and he said almost everyone on the roster will be in good shape when they arrive at training camp Tuesday in UNC-Asheville. Of course, being in shape and being talented are two different things. The big question remains as to whether the Bobcats actually added enough talent this off-season to compete with some of the better teams in the league. Theyve turned over a good portion of the roster with five new players they hope will change the franchises losing culture — veterans Ben Gordon, Brendan Haywood and Ramon Sessions and draft pickks Michael Kidd-Gilchrist, who was selected No.dddddddddddd 2 overall, and Jeffery Taylor. And Dunlap feels the team has a decent young nucleus returning in Gerald Henderson, Kemba Walker, Bismack Biyombo and Byron Mullens. Hes also hoping veteran Tyrus Thomas bounces back from a disappointing season a year ago. “Were going to play a different style, and I think its a style guys are looking forward to,” said Henderson, who led the team in scoring last year. “We want to attack the rim, attack the paint. Thats how we feel like we can beat people. And on defence we have to be thinking the exact opposite.” Dunlap said its also important to limit mid-range jump shots. He said the Bobcats took more of those than any team in the NBA, according to his statistics accumulated by the teams front office. And then theres the atmosphere. For the Bobcats to move forward, they must first put the past behind them. The Bobcats finished last season losing 23 straight games. They havent won a game since St. Patricks Day. In most games, they werent even close even when opposing teams rested their star players down the stretch. “It was a tough season and its something that you just try to forget about,” Henderson said. “But this is a new start for us and we have a new coach. Half of the guys here are new so its something they arent even thinking about.” Thomas said players like what Dunlap is selling, even though it has meant plenty of hard work in terms of extra running and conditioning. “All of the guys here are eager to buy into his system,” Thomas said. “Theyre buying into consistency, buying into a plan. And I think when you have guys that are eager to buy into something it makes it easier.” Dunlap has kept the carrot dangling in front of his players throughout the summer months. He said all five starting positions are up for grabs and nobody is guaranteed any minutes. Those positions will be determined in training camp and in the preseason, but that he could rotate players in and out of the starting lineup as the season goes on. “I think thats a good thing,” Henderson said. “Then guys dont come in with any expectations on minutes or anything like that. You have to earn everything you get and that kind of breeds competition. And thats what you want. As a coach I never thought it was a good idea to guarantee minutes to anybody because then guys wont work as hard. You dont have anything to work for.” cheap nfl jerseys cheap jerseys ’ ’ ’ |

The IndyCar Series has selected Beaux Barfield as its new director for racing. A source requesting anonymity said Barfield will be introduced during a news conference Wednesday at Indianapolis Motor Speedway. Hell replace Brian Barnhart, who lost race control responsibilities last month. Barfield spent the last four years as race director of ALMS sports car series and was the race steward for the now-defunct Champ Car Series from 2003-2007. He then moved to the Formula Atlantic Series for two seasons and then ALMS. A former race car driver, Indy Lights Series was his highest level of competition. “It was top secret when I left at 4 this morn, but apparently not so much now: Im moving to Indy today,” Barfield posted Tuesday afternoon on his Twitter page. Barfield will oversee a reworking of IndyCars rule book. Although Barnhart was criticized by drivers for alleged arbitrary calls, the relaxed rulebook contributed to the inconsistencies. IndyCar CEO Randy Bernard had been searching for a new race director since relieving Barnhart of his duties after a dramatic 2011 season. Barnhart was under fire most of the season after a handful of decisioons cost him the respect of the drivers.dddddddddddd In two very public incidents, Will Power was caught on live television making an obscene gesture toward the race control tower at New Hampshire, and Helio Castroneves called Barnhart a “circus clown” in a Twitter rant. Power was furious when Barnhart decided to resume racing at New Hampshire despite driver protests it was raining too hard. The slick conditions caused a crash on the restart that collected Power, who infamously flashed his two middle fingers toward Barnhart. Barnhart admitted his error after the race — “Youre just kind of sick to your stomach and realize it was an error on race controls standpoint and, clearly, my fault,” he said — but he was lampooned for the call and never restored his credibility. About six weeks later, three-time Indianapolis 500 winner Castroneves took to Twitter to vent about Barnhart penalizing him for passing under yellow in Japan. He complained Barnhart was inconsistent in penalizing some drivers and not others, changed the rulebook when it was convenient and blamed Barnhart for “bringing down an entire series.” cheap nfl jerseys cheap jerseys ’ ’ ’ |

Wacha had to wait out yet another lengthy rain delay, Matt Carpenter drove in three runs and the St. Louis Cardinals beat the Chicago Cubs 6-4 Sunday. St. Louis took two of three from the Cubs and has won four of six. Chicago has lost three of four. Rain has figured in all three of Wachas starts this season. He actually seemed to embrace a third-inning downpour that halted play against the Cubs for 46 minutes. “Im used to it,” he said. “You just have to accept it and youve got to stay focused. I tried to stay loose and just keep my mind in what I needed to do.” Wachas first start of the season was delayed before first pitch by 2 hours, 40 minutes. He endured a short 12-minute delay at the outset of his second outing. Wacha (2-0) allowed three runs and five hits in 6 1-3 innings Sunday. He gave up a two-run homer to Anthony Rizzo on the 16th pitch of the game, but yielded just one run on three hits the rest of the way. He struck out eight and walked one. “At the start, I was a little erratic, but I was able to settle down a little bit,” he said. “I got some quick innings and some quick outs.” St. Louis manager Mike Matheny says Wacha has the mental makeup to handle lengthy or short delays. “Hes strong and he knows what to do out there,” Matheny said. “He keeps a good focus. I felt like his curveball was a lot better after the delay.” Carpenter hit a two-run single in the second inning and added a sacrifice fly in the fourth that put St. Louis ahead to stay at 4-3. He is tied with Yadier Molina for the team lead with nine RBI. “It felt good to get the job done,” Carpenter said. “When you get up in those situations, you just try and put a good at-bat up there and I thought I did that.” Trevor Rosenthal gave up a run in the ninth, but retired Luis Valbuena and Emilio Bonifacio with the tying runs on base to pick up his fourth save in four opportunities. Chicago starter Edwin Jackson (0-1) allowed four runs and eight hits in six innings. He struck out five and walked three in a grueling 114-pitch effort. “I didnt feel too bad,” Jackson said. “I threw a lot of pitches. I was behind in a lot of counts. They were aggressive, thats a good hitting team.” Jhonny Peralta highlighted a two-run eighth with an RBI double that put St. Louis up 6-3. Rizzo got his club started with his second homer of the season. “I just got extended,” Rizzo said. “I was lucky enough to get the barrel on it.” After Carpenter singled in two runs in the second, he stole second and scored on Kolten Wongs single for a 3-2 lead. The Cubs tied the game in the fourth on a run-scoring single by Welington Castillo. Carpenter then gave St. Louis the lead for good with a sacrifice fly to left that brought in Peter Bourjos, who began the fourth inning with a triple. “We did the things we had to at the right times to win,” Carpenter said. Trailing 4-3, Mike Olt led off the Cubs seventh with a double off Wacha. Castillo struck out and reliever Kevin Siegrist retired Darwin Barney and Bonifacio to end the threat. Nolin, 24, had a rough start against the Tampa Bay Rays on Saturday, allowing five earned runs on five hits and three walks in 1 2/3 innings that included a grand slam homer to Mikie Mahtook. “Hes not ready to pitch in the big leagues just yet,” said Gibbons. “We have high hopes for him but he wasnt ready yet.” The Jays optioned 30-year-old reliever Neil Wagner to Buffalo on Friday. “Lets be honest, hes good enough to pitch in the big leagues,” Gibbons said. "He deserves to be pitching in the big leagues. But the way were set up now, weve got a few guys out of options, really good pitchers. Sometimes having an option works against you. “You could say the same thing for Jenkins. He should be playing in the big leagues. Theyre not far away. If somebody falters … and we feel like they can help us more, hell be right back up. Thats just the way the game works.” In five spring appearances, Wagner gave up five earned runs in 5 2/3 innings for an ERA of 7.94. Jenkins, 26, yielded three earned runs in 6 2/3 innings for an ERA of 4.05. All four of the players sent down had options remaining. Esmil Rogers, Todd Redmond, Jeremy Jeffress and Dustin McGowan are out of options, meaning the team could lose them if they are sent down. Josep Maria Bartomeu told a news conference the club has never broken any Spanish regulations in signing young talents to its famed La Masia academy, which has produced such players as Lionel Messi, Xavi Hernandez, and Andres Iniesta. "Were victims of a grave injustice. With this decision, FIFA is penalizing a model that has worked for 35 years, it is penalizing the club. Barca is a model to follow (…) we have no intention of changing our model. “You cant touch our Masia. This model is what has allowed our club and its football to be the most successful in the last decade.” Bartomeu said the club was investigating who made the initial protest about a young South Korean player that led FIFA to demand information on 33 youth players since February 2013. Barcelona continued to point fingers at FIFA and otherr clubs, with Bartomeu asking why “Barca is restricted by these rules and other clubs not?” and that “its not normal that all of these things happen to one club” as Barcelona has also been charged with tax fraud over its signing of Brazil striker Neymar.dddddddddddd Asked if Real Madrid was behind the anonymous tip-off to FIFA, Bartomeu said the club was investigating: “I cant say where this points to. We are investigating documents. When we have proof, well act with total determination.” Barcelona hopes for a temporary lifting of the ban as it appeals the sanction, which was brought by FIFA after it found the Catalan club guilty of repeatedly breaching transfer regulations in signing youth players from 2009-13. The club believes the regulations should be reviewed. Bartomeu said Barcelona will take the matter to civil courts if it does not see the transfer ban reversed. He added the club needed to know if the signings it had already made would be allowed, as it needed to fill squad spots at goalkeeper and centre back. Belgium coach Marc Wilmots says the young Manchester United winger has chosen to represent Belgium as a senior international. Januzajs addition offers yet another attacking option to an already-deep Belgian team ahead of the 2014 FIFA World Cup in Brazil. The Belgians offer an excellent blend of skill and experience ahead of their first World Cup berth since 2002. Their World Cup squad is likely to include Januzajs United teammate Marouane Fellaini, cross-town rival Manchester City captain Vincent Kompany, Chelsea midfielder Eden Hazard and Everton striker Romelu Lukaku. Belgium is currently ranked 12th in the FIFA rankings and was one of the top eight teams at the time the official seedings were done for the World Cup Draw. The Belgians were drawn together in Group H alongside Algeria, Russia and Korea Republic. In an October interview with KTV, a Kosovo-based television station, Januzaj outlined his many international options. He is eligible to play for Belgium by birth and through his passport. However, being from a family of Albanian heritage, he is also eligible to represent them. His parents are actually Kosovar, but Kosovo does not have a FIFA-sanctioned senior team. There had been some speculation that the Brussels-born Januzaj might choose to represent England on the international stage, with manager Roy Hodgson stating in October that the FA was monitoring the 19-year-old. Januzaj is actually ineligible to represent under the FIFA Home Nations Agreement. To settle himself, he looked into the Yankees dugout and saw his new teammates standing at the railing, cheering him on. “They give you a little extra,” Prado said. Prado worked the count full and then lined a single up the middle, lifting New York to a 4-3, come-from-behind victory over the Chicago White Sox on Friday night. “One of the biggest moments in my career, not personal-wise. Just getting a win for the Yankees means a lot,” said Prado, who was obtained in a trade with Arizona on July 31. Prado also hit a two-run homer in the third, and Jacoby Ellsbury had an RBI double in the fifth off John Danks after Chicagos Jose Abreu connected for a three-run shot in the first against Shane Greene. Ichiro Suzuki started the ninth with a single and advanced on a sacrifice. After Derek Jeter lined out, Webb (5-4) intentionally walked Ellsbury and walked Mark Teixeira before Prados hit touched off a raucous celebration near second base. “I thought it was a game we had to win,” left fielder Brett Gardner said of the Yankees, who are the fringes of the AL playoff race. David Robertson (2-4) struck out two in a perfect ninth, closing out New Yorks fourth win in 11 games. Chicago (59-69) lost its fourth straight and fell a season-high 10 games under .500. “You get three runs in the first and not get any more. … Thats how you lose,” White Sox designated hitter Adam Dunn said. After talking about how Cuban ballplayers admired the Yankees growing up because of their success, Abreu impressed New York with his 33rd homer in the first at-bat of his career at Yankee Stadium. Two innings later, Danks yielded Prados long ball, his AL-leading 24th homer given up. The right-hander allowed three runs, upping his total to a league-high 87, in five-plus innings. Greene recovered nicely after giving up three sttraight hits to start the game, including Abreus homer.ddddddddddddHe allowed a career-high nine hits in five-plus innings and struck out seven. The navy-suited 20-something, sitting in the first row of the second deck at Yankee Stadium, climbed the railing and went into an unused photographers perch to pick up the souvenir, receiving loud applause. The cheers turned to boos when he was escorted out by a policeman, but Ohea was met with another ovation when he was allowed to return. “They realized it was heat of the moment and realized there was nothing you could do about it,” Ohea said of why he was not ejected from the ballpark. “I think the suit helped out.” SPECIAL K Robertson got his 500th career strikeout, when he fanned Tyler Flowers in the ninth. Téma: Jak postupovat / guins coach Dan Bylsma got a chance to s ZURICH – FIFA President Sepp Blatter has refused to comment on allegations linking Qatars winning World Cup bid to payments received by voters. Blatter said at a news conference on Friday “I have not even the right” to discuss claims published this week by the Daily Telegraph. The British newspaper said it had evidence that a Qatari company controlled by former FIFA board member Mohamed bin Hammam paid almost $2 million to former FIFA vice-president Jack Warners family after the December 2010 vote. Blatter referred questions to a statement on behalf of its ethics investigation panel, which was “aware of the material identified in the published article.” The claims were aired as Blatter and other FIFA executive committee members were being interviewed in Zurich as part of an investigation by ethics prosecutor Michael Garcia into the 2018 and 2022 World Cup bidding contests, won by Russia and Qatar. Pressed further on the subject, Blatter insisted he will not comment “until they have finished their work.” Garcia is expected to deliver a report this year to the judging panel of FIFAs ethics court. “As with any allegations of misconduct by football officials the ethics committee will take whatever action it feels is appropriate,” the statement on behalf of Garcia said. Still, he has limited jurisdiction at best. Bin Hammam is already banned from football for life, and Warner resigned in June 2011 to avoid a previous FIFA investigation into a cash-for-votes scandal linked to the Qataris failed presidential bid. As future World Cup hosts continue to trouble FIFA, Blatter said he would make another visit to Qatar before the June kickoff in Brazil to press for progress in the gas-rich emirates treatment of migrant labourers. Blatters board colleague, Theo Zwanziger, said FIFA has asked Qatari authorities for “honest reports” on the situation. Labour unions and rights groups have campaigned to highlight unsafe conditions, unpaid salaries and contracts tying workers to their employer. Blatter dismissed suggestions that aggressive actions by 2018 World Cup host Russia toward neighbouring Ukraine in the breakaway Crimea region could affect the tournament. “The World Cup has been given and voted to Russia and we are going forward with our work,” said Blatter, who counts Russias sports minister, Vitaly Mutko, among his board colleagues. FIFA and UEFA have also endorsed an agreement that Crimea region clubs Tavriya Simferopol and FC Sevastopol should complete the season in the Ukraine Premier League. Both clubs expressed interest in switching to the Russian league next season. Issues affecting FIFAs next three major tournament hosts have not damaged the governing bodys finances. Buoyed by record income of $1.386 billion last year, FIFA reported that its reserves grew to $1.432 billion after making a $72 million profit. FIFAs financial results typically peak in a World Cup year, which will be reported next March, and are set to grow with more valuable TV rights and sponsorship deals starting next year. “We will make more money for Russia and we will make more money for Qatar,” secretary general Jerome Valcke said. “And if it is as it is, we will make more money for the World Cup 26.” In other decisions: — There was no agreement on a proposal for age and term limits in FIFA office. An option for three four-year terms was considered. The issue will go to the FIFA Congress on June 11 in Sao Paulo. — The congress will be asked to extend mandates through 2015 for two co-opted woman board members: Moya Dodd of Australia and Sonia Bien-Aime of Turks and Caicos Islands. — Rabat and Marrakech were confirmed as host cities for the Club World Cup in Morocco in December, subject to Rabat stadium works being completed before September. The 30-year-old Canadian forward smiled as he captured the chilly scene, which took him all the way back to when he first learned to skate at his grandparents farm. “As I grew up, there was an outdoor rink right beside by the main rink,” said Glass, a native of Regina, Saskatchewan. “So even tournaments, wed have our real game inside and then wed all just take half our gear off and run across to the outdoor rink and play all day. It reminds me of that and kind of the good old days.” Yup, these outdoor games still have an allure for NHL players, especially when they involve two of the best teams in the league. The league gets a marquee prime-time finish for its successful Stadium Series when Sidney Crosby and the Penguins take on Jonathan Toews and the Chicago Blackhawks on Saturday night at the home of the NFLs Chicago Bears. “Youve got two pretty fast, skilled hockey teams and if the ice can kind of agree with everyone I think that would make for a pretty good product out there,” Crosby said. The forecast calls for light snow and temperatures in the teens, but each team has some experience with the pratfalls of playing outside. Chicago lost 6-4 to rival Detroit in the 2009 Winter Classic at Wrigley Field. Crosby had the winning shootout goal when visiting Pittsburgh beat Buffalo 2-1 in the first Winter Classic in 2008, but the Penguins lost 3-1 to Washington when they hosted the 2011 game at Heinz Field. Now the Blackhawks and Penguins return to the great outdoors for their first meeting since Pittsburghs 3-2 victory on Dec. 20, 2011. Its ttheir first game in Chicago since Patrick Kane had the only shootout goal in the Blackhawks 3-2 win on Feb.dddddddddddd 20 of that year. While scheduling and the leagues most recent labour dispute have kept the teams apart, the players are plenty familiar with one another. Team captains Crosby and Toews face off for the first time in an NHL regular-season game after leading Canada to the gold medal in the Sochi Olympics last weekend. Crosby, Toews and Penguins forward Chris Kunitz scored in their countrys 3-0 victory in the final against Sweden, which included Marcus Kruger, Johnny Oduya and Niklas Hjalmarsson of the Blackhawks. Penguins coach Dan Bylsma got a chance to see Kane up close when he was behind the bench for Team USA in Russia. “Ive learned quite a bit about his competitiveness,” Bylsma said. “You kind of see the smile. Its certainly a ton of skill how he plays the game, but I was impressed by it and learned just the competitiveness that he has and brings to the game. Skill-wise you see it live.” The first NHL game at Soldier Field also features two teams in need of a win. The Penguins are coming off a 6-5 shootout loss to Montreal, while the Blackhawks lost 2-1 at the New York Rangers on Thursday night. Chicago, which almost tied the game against the Rangers in the final seconds, is playing its first game in the Windy City since Jan. 26. “Everybody is excited for Saturday,” centre Peter Regin, who scored the only goal against New York, said Thursday night. “Obviously we were hoping to get a different outcome tonight, but we play in two days. That is the good thing about the NHL, you play every second night, so its not so long before you can redeem yourself.” cheap nfl jerseys cheap jerseys ’ ’ ’ |

Téma: Jak postupovat / o, out of respect for the veteran, gave MANCHESTER, England – Manchester United striker Robin van Persie will miss up to six weeks with a left knee injury, ruling the Netherlands striker out of both legs of a Champions League quarterfinal against Bayern Munich and potentially six Premier League games. It is a major blow to Uniteds hopes of winning the Champions League, which realistically is the clubs only route back into Europes top competition next season. Following a second scan on the injury on Friday, United said Van Persie has a “sprained knee which will keep him out for around 4-6 weeks.” He appears to be in no danger of missing the World Cup finals in Brazil beginning in mid-June — the worst-case scenario according to Uniteds diagnosis is that Van Persie is out until the start of May, leaving him available for the last two or three league games in Uniteds season. Van Persie, who has scored 23 goals in 29 games for club and country this season, was carried off on a stretcher after hurting his knee in a challenge from behind toward the end of Wednesdays 3-0 victory over Olympiakos, in which he scored a hat trick to send his team into the last eight. United is seventh in the Premier League after its humiliating 3-0 loss to Liverpool last weekend, 12 points adrift of fourth-place Manchester City having played two more games. A finish in the top six would qualify United for next seasons Europa League, and sixth-place Everton is three points ahead with a game in hand. It will be a second significant spell on the sidelines for Van Persie this season — he played just two games across 2 1/2 months over the turn of the year because of groin then thigh problems. The news punctures some of the optimism that has spread through Old Trafford after the victory over Olympiakos, which came just as the pressure was beginning to build on manager David Moyes. Moyes has Danny Welbeck and Javier Hernandez as alternatives up front to partner Wayne Rooney. Otherwise, Moyes could decide to play Rooney as his main striker and move Juan Mata, signed in January for a record fee of 37.1 million pounds ($61.2 million), into his favoured No. 10 role just in behind. Mata has played out wide in recent games, to little effect. . The Riders acquired the veteran slotback from the B.C. Lions in January 2013 to provide veteran leadership for a squad looking to make a successful Grey Cup run on home soil. After enduring one of the worst seasons statistically of his illustrious CFL career, Simon stood tall in the title game, registering three catches for 67 yards and two TDs in leading Saskatchewan to a 45-23 victory over the Hamilton Tiger-Cats at Mosaic Field. However, Brendan Taman, the Riders general manager and vice-president of football operations, couldnt guarantee Simons return during a CFL conference call Tuesday. “Geroy and I have, obviously, a pretty good relationship so when we made this deal last year to acquire him we knew at the end of the first year he played for us that wed sit down and talk about his role,” Taman said. "Obviously we have a contract issue were going to have to talk about, too, so that plan is ongoing … those talks are progressing, you could say, one way or the other. “Hes got as good a chance of not being back as he will be back.” The six-foot 198-pound Simon, who turns 39 in September, had just 40 catches for 565 yards and three TDs last year, missing the first three regular-season games due to injury. The native of Johnstown, Pa., is the most prolific receiver in CFL history with 1,029 receptions for 16,352 yards — both all-time records — with 103 TDs ovver 15 seasons.dddddddddddd “Obviously he had a good year for us and did a good job for us,” Taman said. “His status for 14 is to be determined and were still in talks about that.” At the root of the talks, not surprisingly, is money. Simon was reportedly set to earn $205,000 with B.C. heading into the 2013 season. But the Lions were prepared to pay roughly half that while giving Simon a reduced role. When Simon and the Lions couldnt reach an agreement, GM Wally Buono, out of respect for the veteran, gave Simon permission to seek a trade rather than release him outright. When the Riders acquired Simon, they signed him to a one-year deal, plus an option, that reportedly called for a $170,000 base salary that, with bonuses, could increase to about $200,000. “There was an agreement in place that after the first year we would talk about a second year going forward,” Taman said. "That was mainly, obviously, financial related. “Right now hes still on the same contract that he was on and if we can work that out and (it) stays that way well see. But we have some discussions we still have to do with him.” Given the off-season departures of running back Korey Sheets (Oakland, NFL) and Weston Dressler (Kansas City, NFL), Simon was expected to be a key figure in the Riders offence this season. Also gone from Saskatchewans Grey Cup-winning squad are safety Craig Butler (free agent, Hamilton), defensive linemen Keith Shologan (Ottawa expansion draft) and Jermaine McElveen (free agent, Montreal) as well as linebacker Diamond Ferri (free agent, Montreal). "I PITTSBURGH — The latest addition by the suddenly splurging Pittsburgh Pirates hustled into the dugout in the sixth inning on Saturday night eager to step into the batters box against St. Louis if necessary. Take a breath, Justin Morneau. The Pirates — and the pennant race — arent going anywhere. A.J. Burnett scattered four hits over seven innings, Russell Martin hit a three-run homer and the Pirates beat the Cardinals 7-1 on Saturday night to regain sole possession of the NL Central lead. Neil Walker added three hits for the Pirates, who improved to 79-56 and moved within three victories of their first winning season since 1992. And theres still a month left. “Its a great feat,” Burnett said. “Its been a long time, but our goals have been higher than that.” Burnett (7-9) gave up one run while striking out six and walking one. He received plenty of help only hours after the Pirates acquired Morneau from the Minnesota Twins, hoping the 2006 AL MVP can give a middling offence a jolt heading into the stretch drive. Morneau didnt waste time getting to Pittsburgh. He left Texas — where the Twins were playing the Rangers — in the middle of the afternoon, arrived at the airport just before 8 p.m. and was in uniform trading jokes with his new teammates moments after pulling on a black-and-gold jersey. “You try to get here as quick as you can because you want to be a part of this,” Morneau said. The 32-year-old first baseman will have to wait until Sunday to get his first major league at-bat for someone other than Minnesota. By the time he was inside PNC Park, the Pirates had things well in hand. Martin keyed a five-run second with his drive off Lance Lynn (13-9), who has a 7.66 ERA in his last four starts. “It just (ticks) you off and thats where Im at,” Lynn said. “Im not happy with the way Im throwing the ball, but Im going to fix it and Im looking forward to the next month because its going to be better.” It might have to be if St. Louis wants to keep pace with Pittsburgh. The trade for Morneau marked the second big move by the Pirates in five days as they try to beat out the Cardinals and Cincinnati Reds in baseballs tightest division race. Pittsburgh brought in Marlon Byrd and John Buck from the New York Mets on Tuesday. Asked if he was encouraged by the way the Pirates notoriously thrifty front office opened the checkbook to bring in three proven veterans, Burnett couldnt fight back a smile. “Thats what theyre supposed to do,” he said. Pittsburgh ranks 10th in the NL in runs scored, one of the main reasons general manager Neal Huntington aggressively pursued Morneau. But the Pirates are averaging 5.2 runs per game during their current six-game homestand and Morneaus arrival gives MVP contender Andrew McCutchen and slugging third baseman Pedro Alvarez some much-needed protection. “Everybody knows we got better with the addition of Justin,” Martin said. “Hes an ex-MVP. He knows what hes doing out there. Hes going to give you a productive at-bat and he lengthens the middle of the order.” For a night, however, it wasnt McCutchen, Alvarez or Morneau but role players who provided the pop as the Pirates clinched the season series over St. Louis. Burnett got Pittsburgh started with an RBI single in the second, and Jose Tabata followed with one of his own to stake the Pirates to a 2-0 lead. It could have been worse after Lynn loaded the bases before striking out McCutchen to get out of the jam. Lynn wasnt so fortunate one inning later. Alvarez led off with a double, Byrd singled him home and Garrett Jones walked. Martin stepped in and sent a fastball into the front row of seats in right-centre for his second homer in two nights to give Pittsburgh a 6-1 lead. Walker added an RBI triple later in the inning. While Lynn managed to stay in the game, he left after four innings following a miserable start in which he gave up seven runs on 10 hits with three walks and four strikeouts. His ERA rose to 4.29. The deficit proved far too large for a suddenly reeling offence. The Cardinals lead the NL in batting average and runs but have scored just once in their last three games. “Weve had a few balls hit hard, but not a lot,” manager Mike Matheny said. “I like what our offence has done over the majority of the season. You dont want to take a couple of games and start making conclusions. Were just going to keep going about it.” Burnetts control had something to do with it in front of the second-largest crowd in the 12-year history of PNC Park. Working both sides of the plate effectively, Burnett assured Pittsburgh heads into the final month of a remarkable season in first place for the first time since it won the NL East in 1992. NOTES: Reliever John Axford, acquired on Friday from Milwaukee, pitched a perfect seventh in his Cardinals debut. … The Pirates have outhomered St. Louis 18-3 in 15 meetings this season. … St. Louis SS Pete Kozma grounded out while pinch-hitting for Lynn and is hitless in his last 29 at-bats. … The series concludes Sunday. Joe Kelly (6-3, 2.91 ERA) starts for St. Louis against Kris Johnson (0-1, 3.00). … The Cardinals have not settled on a starter for Tuesday in Cincinnati. Michael Wacha, Carlos Martinez and Tyler Lyons are all under consideration. Although head coach Randy Carlyle jokingly wondered how much actual training Bolland got done while in London. “I dont know how much training goes on when you go back to the junior team that you played for so I wouldnt read too much into that,” laughed Carlyle after the Maple Leafs were put through an up-tempo practice that concluded with a 10-minute bag skate on Thursday. "I was in London once at a bar called “Joe Cools” and they have numerous stools there that have players names on them that Ive coached, and hes one of them." In all seriousness though, that Bolland has put himself in a position to even discuss a potential return just 110 days since suffering a laceration that he said went right through the muscle and tendon in his ankle, nearly down to the bone, is a remarkable feat of determination that has not been lost on his coach. “The level of professionalism that he displays day in, day out right from when we first saw him in training camp, that has continued here,” said Carlyle. “Hes pushing himself and with the help of our training staff and our strength and conditioning (coaches), hes done a heck of a job to get himself back where he is now.” So where exactly is he? Neither Carlyle nor Bolland would pin down a specific return date but Bolland did sound more encouraged with his progress than he did when he offered his last update on February 5 in Tampa Bay. “Im close, its getting there,” he said on Thursday. “Im on my way upwards.” Carlyle suggested yesterday that a decision would be made next Wednesday as to whether Bolland will dress when the Leafs resume their schedule against the New York Islanders on February 27. “Ah, well see,” Bolland added when asked if he expects to play against the Islanders. His impending return was welcomed news to Dion Phaneuf. “Thats a very big boost,” said the Leafs captain. “Bollands an experienced guy whos played a lot of hockey in the league. Hes a big part of our team. Hes big in the room; hes big on the ice. Hes a leader in our dressing room and he plays hard night in and night out so were excited too get him back.dddddddddddd.” But despite just 22 regular season games remaining for the Leafs, Bolland will not be re-inserted until he declares himself ready. “When he says hes ready to go, thats one of the things were adamant about here is that the player is not going to come back and say hes 85 per cent and were going to put him in the lineup,” Carlyle said. “Hes got to tell us hes 100/110 per cent and then were ready to go. That makes it a lot easier for everybody involved.” When Bolland was injured, he was playing on a line with Mason Raymond and David Clarkson. Since then, Clarkson has been moved to a line with Joffrey Lupul and Nazem Kadri which Carlyle indicated he has been pleased with. At this point, consider it audition time for the right wing spot with leading candidates likely being Nik Kulemin and Troy Bodie. “We think that Bolland and Mason Raymond and whoever we decide to put there could give us a 2A and 2B type of offensive numbers,” said Carlyle. But dont expect too much too soon when Bolland does return, Carlyle cautioned, suggesting he will keep an eye on his minutes and potentially avoid penalty killing duties early on. “I dont think Ill be stepping into the same role as I was at the start of the season,” Bolland said. “I missed two and a half, three months of hockey and just coming back and throwing yourself in the mix is never fun. Its tough coming back from injuries and coming back will be something where Ill be eased in and not just thrown to the wolves. My expectations will be a little bit lower but gradually (after) the first two or three games, Ill be back in the mix.” The chance to get Bolland back for the stretch drive, whether its in the first game back against the Islanders or a few games later, is an addition that Carlyle feels will have a significant impact on the team, almost akin to a trade deadline acquisition without giving anything up. “Anytime you can add a player of that caliber, it does change the makeup of your lineup,” said Carlyle. “We lost two centres (Bozak and Bolland) early in November and weve been taxing people and putting younger players in situations that have somewhat overwhelmed them at times. We feel its a huge compliment to the depth of our organization that our young players have come in and filled that gap. Theres no ifs, ands or buts adding a David Bolland, we feel it has an impact into our line up.” cheap nfl jerseys cheap jerseys ’ ’ ’ |

Téma: Jak postupovat / rk that will help his team begin BARCELONA, Spain — Lionel Messi criticized a Barcelona vice-president on Friday for saying the Argentina forward didnt deserve a better contract. Javier Faus, the vice-president in charge of Barcelonas finances, said two weeks ago he didnt see a reason to further extend Messis contract. Last year, the club extended the 26-year-old Messis contract through 2018. “Mr. Faus is a person that doesnt know anything about football and wants to run Barcelona like a business, which it isnt,” Messi told Catalan radio RAC1. "Barcelona is the best team in the world and deserves to be represented by the best executives. “I remind him that neither I nor any of my representatives have asked for a contract extension at any moment, and he knows that very well.” Messi is Barcelonas all-time leading scorer and a four-time world player of the year. He is in Argentina recovering from a hamstring injury and expected to return to Barcelona in January. Messi rarely speaks about the business side of his career. This is the first time he has openly criticized an important board member of the club he joined when he was 13 years old. Besides a series of injuries, Messis season has also been marked by legal problems. Messi and his father Jorge are being investigated for allegedly not paying all their taxes. Messis father made a payment of more than 5 million euros (then $6.6 million) on Aug. 14 to cover alleged back taxes and interest. Barcelona goalkeeper Victor Valdes called for calm and downplayed any conflict between the club and its most valuable player. “We are all pulling in the same direction in this club,” Valdes said. Even so, it appears that a better deal for Messi could be in the works. Barcelona president Sandro Rosell said on Thursday he had not spoken to Messi about his contract, while adding “but my door is always open. I have no doubt that the best player in the world deserves to be the highest paid.” nfl jerseys china . Téma: Jak postupovat / [url=http://www.cheapauthen The Los Angeles Kings pulled the trigger to get a veteran scoring winger, one that is a few years away from his best production. Numbers Game breaks down the Kings deal for Marian Gaborik. The Kings Get: RW Marian Gaborik. Gaborik, 32, has been one of the premier goal-scorers in the league, but is also a couple years removed from real top level production. From 2001-2002 through 2011-2012, he scored 306 goals in 651 games, his 0.47 goals per game ranked fourth among players that played in at least 500 games over that span. In the past two seasons, however, Gaborik has a meagre 18 goals and 41 points in 69 games, not near his previous level of production and its not just by some run of bad luck. Gaborik is averaging 2.14 shots on goal per game this season, easily the lowest mark of his career, and his 16:25 time on ice per game is his lowest since his rookie season of 2000-2001. Hes also missed time with a broken collarbone, returning to the lineup after the Olympics. Going to Los Angeles, Gaborik has an opportunity to add a new dimension to the Kings, a grinding team that doesnt have anyone that can match Gaboriks speed. If he can recapture some of his goal-scoring touch, playing for a dominant possession team, then Gaborik might rehabilitate some of his rep as a scorer while, at the same time, providing a much-needed offensive boost for a team that ranks 27th with 2.32 goals per game this season. If Gaborik moves into a top line role with the Kings, that should mean that a winger that has been playing in the top six — one of Tyler Toffoli, Dustin Brown, Justin Williams — will get bumped into a third-line role and that is a positive in terms of the Kings overall forward depth. Gaborik is in the final year of a deal that pays him $7.5-million per season, but half of his salary was retained by the New York Rangers, in order to facilitate his trade to Columbus, so hes not particularly cost prohibitive three quarters of the way through the season. The Blue Jackets Get: RW Matt Frattin, a second-round (Torontos 2014 or 2015 pick) and a conditional third-round pick in 2014 or 2015. Frattin is a 26-year-old winger who had shown some offensive ability with Toronto (scoring 15 goals and 28 points in 82 games) before this current season in Los Angeles, during which hes scored two goals and six points in 40 games. While Frattins lack of production can be tied to a low on-ice shooting percentage (4.59%), his relative possession stats were not good despite getting easy minutes — not facing tough competition and starting 58.2% of his shifts in the offensive zone. At this point, Frattin is basically a fringe NHL winger and hell have to compete for playing time with the likes of Corey Tropp and Blake Comeau. Frattin, at an $875,000 cap hit through the end of the season, will be a restricted free agent in the summer. The second and third-round picks, combined, present about a 40% chance of yielding an NHL player, so its entirely possible that the Blue Jackets could go into next season with little to show in return for Gaborik, but thats a reflection of the decline in Gaboriks productivity. If he was the same as the three-time 40-goal scorer that he has been in the past, then the Blue Jackets a) would have been more inclined to keep him or b) would have been able to extract a more substantial price in return. Téma: Jak postupovat / dlec. Had referee Felix Zwayer award SALT LAKE CITY — Derrick Favors is a difference-maker, rusty or not. Favours returned from a hip injury and set the tone early on his way to 20 points to help the Utah Jazz beat the Boston Celtics 110-98 on Monday night. “I felt rusty to tell you the truth but it felt good to be back out there. I made a lot of open shots and I think I did a good job defensively to help my team win,” Favors said. Utah coach Ty Corbin was glad to see Favours back on the court. “He does so many good things for us on the defensive end, it really makes it easy for the other guys,” said Corbin, whose team is 0-9 without his star centre. In the games Favors has missed, its easy to see the Jazz struggle to defend. Even the soft-spoken big man can see the void when hes on the sidelines. “They are a step slow on the defensive end. Usually Im the only guy who helps out when guys make mistakes. Im the guy who bails them out,” Favors said. On the offensive end, Alec Burks is the guy who bails out the Jazz when the play breaks down or the shot clock nears zero. Burks scored 21 points and his instant offence helped keep the Celtics at bay but he knows Utahs limited success this season is keyed by defence. “Having that defensive anchor, that man-child down there helps us a lot,” Burks said. “When we see he is also confident in his shot, it makes the whole team confident.” Marvin Williams added 19 points on 8-for-10 shooting to help the Jazz break a three-game losing streak and end a six-game skid to the Celtics. Favours established himself early with four baskets in the opening quarter and bolstered Utahs leaky defence in the middle. Jeff Green and Kelly Olynyk each had 21 points for Boston, which dropped all four games on its road trip and extended its losing streak to five. The Jazz shot 55 per cent and led by as many 18 points as six players scored in double figures and featured quick ball movement against the weary Celtics. “We couldnt break their rhythm,” Green said. “They kept going to the same thing, making us work. They got good looks and were making shots.” Favours had three blocked shots and Jeremy Evans had a career-high four but the Celtics made 20 of 21 free throws to stay in the game. Despite a strong game from Rajon Rondo, who had 18 points and 10 assists, the Celtics dropped to 4-22 against teams from the Western Conference and 0-13 on the road. Boston has dropped 18 consecutive road games versus Western Conference opponents since a 110-107 overtime win over Utah last Feb. 25. Burks, who is averaging more than 20 points in a reserve role over the last six games, helped the Jazz finally shake the Celtics mastery over Utah. No current member of the Jazz roster was on the team was on the team when Utah last defeated Boston, 110-97 on March 10, 2010. “Were maturing as a team and Im maturing as a player. Im playing my game. I know my role,” Burks said. The Celtics, who shot less than 40 per cent on the road trip, missed regular starters Jared Sullinger and Avery Bradley as the Boston offence broke down early and often. Sullinger is following the leagues protocol after suffering a mild concussion Friday, while Bradley has missed 12 of 15 games with an ankle injury. “Were just trying to keep our heads up, keep working. Were banged up,” Olynyk said. Rondo passed to Kris Humphries for a jumper and then made one of his own to pull the Celtics to 59-50 to begin the second half. But Williams and Richard Jefferson countered with baskets and the Celtics couldnt again trim the lead to single digits until Jerryd Bayless made a layup to make it 103-94 with 3:18 to play. The Jazz clinched the game with a three-point play by Favours and Williams fast-break layup with 1:08 to play. The starting lineup of Richard Jefferson, Williams, Favors, Gordon Hayward (10 assists) and Trey Burke improved to 17-9 on the year. All other lineups are 3-33 for Utah. Baumann misjudged a long ball from Milan Badelj and failed to clear after emerging outside the penalty area, allowing Maximilian Beister to open the scoring in the 37th minute. Two minutes after the interval, Baumann again found himself outside the penalty area for Rafael van der Vaarts hopeful punt forward. The goalkeeper waited, then fumbled and Pierre-Michel Lasogga swooped to fire into the empty net. Baumann also spilled Beisters straightforward shot to let Van der Vaart score in the 63rd. “The actions didnt work out as Id imagined they would. You have to cope with it, were human,” Bauman said. “My confidence isnt affected. Sure, its a (bad) situation but … we have to stay calm, shouldnt go crazy.” Baumann redeemed himself somewhat with a good save in a one-on-one with Ivo Ilicevic late on, before both Freiburg and Hamburg players consoled the goalkeeper after the match. “They told me they were sorry for me. Lasogga and Beister are good sorts. It was nice of them,” Baumann said of his former Germany under-21 teammates. Freiburg coach Christian Streich said hed speak with the goalkeeper on Monday. “Ive experienced many things in the last few weeks that Ive never before experienced in football,” Streich said. Freiburg remains second from bottom, one of two sides yet to win after 10 rounds of the Bundesliga. Hamburg climbs to 12th after two wins and two draws since Bert van Marwijk was apppointed coach.dddddddddddd “We deserved to win. We created plenty of other chances to score,” said Van Marwijk. “Of course, we were lucky with the goals.” Borussia Moenchengladbach defeated Eintracht Frankfurt 4-1 later Sunday to move fourth, nine points adrift of the top three. Juan Arango got Gladbach off the mark with a free kick in the 11th, only for Stefan Aigner to equalize four minutes later when Marc-Andre ter Stegen was fortunate that advantage was played after a clear foul on Vaclav Kadlec. Had referee Felix Zwayer awarded the penalty, he would have been forced to send the goalkeeper off, but he awarded the score after Aigner fired home the loose ball from close range. Oscar Wendt restored the home sides advantage three minutes later with a fine strike inside the near post after playing a one-two with Raffael. Patrick Herrmann effectively decided the game, shooting inside the bottom left corner on the hour, and then setting-up Raffaels goal six minutes later after a well-worked move involving Julian Korb. “It was OK, it was good,” said Gladbach coach Lucien Favre, who played down his sides chances of ending the season in fourth. “There are many other teams who will be challenging too. You have Schalke, you have Wolfsburg, its very close. The team in 14th (Frankfurt) has national team players. We have to stay grounded.” On Saturday, league leader Bayern Munich was made to work hard for a 3-2 win over Hertha Berlin, while Borussia Dortmund and Bayer Leverkusen stayed one point behind with wins over Schalke and Augsburg, respectively. Téma: Jak postupovat / -- undrafted rookie Pres NEW ORLEANS – When DeMar DeRozan made his All-Star debut on Sunday, checking in for the first time at the outset of the second quarter, he immediately looked like he belonged. It took 22 seconds for DeRozan to get on the board, taking a lob pass from Joakim Noah and converting the easy layup before knocking down his next two shots. For the Raptors fifth-year guard, this moment was one he had been dreaming about for a long time but to his credit, he never looked out of place. “Honestly, I wasnt nervous at all,” he told TSN.ca after scoring eight points in 15 minutes of action for the victorious Eastern Conference squad. “I thought I was going to be nervous before the game but as soon as I went out there I wasnt nervous at all.” “It didnt feel like there was any pressure, like you were playing in front of all these people. They just made it fun, honestly. I didnt have no jitters.” After a lackluster slate of Saturday night events, the big show did not disappoint. Combined, 318 points were scored – an All-Star record – with the East defeating the West by a score of 163-155. The frenetic pace fit DeRozans game like a glove. “All we do is get out and run, wings get out and run, push it,” he said. “Its an opportunity to get fast-break dunks, layups, sorts of things like that so it fits well for a player like me.” The East overcame an 18-point deficit, closing out the night on a 10-0 run to win for the first time in four years. Their 163 points were the most scored in an All-Star Game. DeRozans All-Star experience has been surreal. From watching his young teammates Jonas Valanciunas and Terrence Ross compete in the Rising Stars Challenge and the Slam Dunk Contest – both events that he has participated in himself – to sharing the bench with former a teammate and nine-time All-Star Chris Bosh on Sunday, hes had to pinch himself on more than one occasion. It didnt hit him until Sunday evening, as he arrived at Smoothie King Center, walked in the locker room and saw a row of All-Star jerseys instead of his usual Raptors duds. “Theres only a select few that get to put on the All-Star jersey,” he realizes. That experience of being among them and gaining the respect that accompanies the All-Star tag – which hell wear next to his name for the duration of his career and beyond – was far more valuable than the 15 minutes he logged in the game. “It was a great experience, man,” he said. “Just going out there and having fun with the leagues best, to be in that same category is great.” It may have been his first appearance in the leagues midseason classic, but the Raptors leading scorer is determined not to make it his last. “[I have to] work harder than I did this previous summer to be a better player,” said DeRozan, who is averaging a career-best 22.4 points this season. “I cant slow down. Now Im a target. Players are going to go at me and understand that Ive got the All-Star next to my name. Just continue working, dont be complacent with anything and keep pushing.” Cavaliers guard Kyrie Irving – a controversial selection when he was voted in as a starter by the fans last month – took home game MVP honours after scoring 31 points to go along with 14 assists. He was a perfect 11-for-11 from inside the three-point arch, many of those field goals were layups. “How Kyrie makes his layups is amazing,” DeRozan said of his Eastern Conference teammate. “You cant deny [him] when he gets to the basket; you cant play him a certain way because he can finish with either hand, off either leg and hes so creative with it. It was cool to see him go out and play.” Sunday was a night of broken records for both sides. Carmelo Anthony, who had 30 points for the East, connected on eight three pointers, most in an All-Star Game. Kevin Durant and Blake Griffin had 38 points apiece for the West, coming just shy of Wilt Chamberlains mark of 42. 10 of Griffins All-Star Game record 19 field goals were dunks. wholesale jerseys . Baumann misjudged a long ball from Milan Badelj and failed to clear after emerging outside the penalty area, allowing Maximilian Beister to open the scoring in the 37th minute. The Kings were received penalties for both hooking and goaltender interference in the final minute of regulation play.WASHINGTON — The Boston Celtics were tired from playing the night before and so undermanned that they resorted to a 10-day-contract backcourt for part of the game. The Washington Wizards were again trying to erase the stigma of mediocrity. Surely, against this Celtics lineup, this would be the night they would end their long and laborious quest to get above .500. Never mind. The Celtics won. Jeff Green put the team on his shoulders and scored a season-high 39 points, while the Wizards wilted with a display of selfish basketball. Boston blew a 19-point first-half lead, but Gerald Wallace made a driving layup with 2.5 seconds remaining in overtime Wednesday night for the 113-111 victory that snapped a 10-game road losing streak. “Lot of reasons to give up,” Celtics coach Brad Stevens said. “And they didnt do that.” Green shot early and often, finishing with career-highs in 3-pointers attempted (16) and made (8). Rookie Phil Pressey added a career-high 20 points. The Celtics played without Rajon Rando, Avery Bradley and Jerryd Bayless and at one point had Chris Johnson and Vander Blue, both on 10-day contracts, on the floor together in the second quarter. “I just put myself in the position where I had to be the man to carry the team and shoot the ball,” Green said. “So thats what I did.” John Wall had 28 points, 11 rebounds and 10 assists for his second career triple-double for Washington, but he went 9 for 29 from the field and missed a potential game-winning, contested 3-pointer at the buzzer in overtime. The Wizards havent won a game to move above .500 since Halloween 2009 and have failed to win this season at 0-0, 9-9, 14-14, 19-19 and 20-20. The milestone has become such a psychological hurdle that coach Randy Wittman this week had to caution against thoughts that “all of a sudden fairy dust is going to fall on us if we get over .500.” This time Wittman was angry because he said his players came down with a case of “I got mine,” looking to pad their stats against a team that was supposed to be easy pickings. “I can get mine because who are we playing?” Wittman said forcefully. &quuot; You cannot screw with the basketball gods like that.dddddddddddd It always comes back to get you. … Every player in this league can play. Theyre in the NBA. Every player can play. And if you dont give them the respect, this is what happens." Wall pleaded guilty. “It starts with me,” he said. “I took too many shots tonight and didnt move the ball like were supposed to in the first half. … For some reason, we dont go out there in that first half when weve got an opportunity to go (above) .500 and play as a team. We get to playing selfish.” Bostons Rondo sat out the second half of a back-to-back in his return from major knee surgery, Bradley is sidelined for about two weeks after spraining his right ankle against the Miami Heat the night before, and recently acquired guard Bayless missed his second consecutive game with a sprained left big toe and is day to day. Stevens therefore started a lineup consisting of a backup point guard — undrafted rookie Pressey — and four forwards. Blue made his NBA debut after being signed earlier in the day. The Wizards played the first half as if in slow motion, but the Celtics looked like their patchwork selves in the third quarter, committing a pair of offensive fouls during an 11-0 Wizards run. Martell Webster gave the Wizards their first lead of the game with a four-point play that made the score 88-87 with 6:37 remaining in regulation, but neither team could make a clutch shot in the final minute of the fourth quarter with the score tied. Pressey had made only 6 of 38 3-pointers all season, but he went 5 for 6 from 3-point range against the Wizards. His 3-pointer in the final minute of overtime gave the Celtics a 111-108 lead. The Wizards tied the game when Marcin Gortat made 1 of 2 free throws with 13.9 seconds left in the extra period, but they couldnt stop Wallace from making the winning basket. “We had a good start to the third quarter,” Wizards forward Trevor Booker said. “But other than that, we played like doo-doo.” NOTES: Bostons 10-game road skid was its longest since a 12-game streak in 2007. … Booker returned after missing one game with a sprained left ankle. Téma: Jak postupovat / n canoeist says she is suffer As another year in the soccer world comes to an end, it is important to note it does so without a real feud between the international and club game. This should be celebrated because it will not always be this way. With the amount of money given to players by their clubs these days, it is a wonder that so many of those teams allow the sport to continue to take away many of their assets so they can play for a different team in the middle of their season. Although it is has always been this way, it does not make it right. Playing for your country in any sport should be an honour, yet it is on this premise that the international game has gotten away with so much in recent years. Should it really be an honour to have to leave your team in the middle of an important part of the season to head to some foreign land to play an international match that may or may not mean anything? Never mind the middle of the season, what about the start of it? Is that still an honour that should force players to go? Once again at the start of this European club season, a nonsensical international window was put in by FIFA, allowing countries to claim their players away from their clubs just hours before they kicked off a new campaign. At the moment, the relationship between the international game and the club game could be described as moderate. It is a high-profile game of chess being played out in front of billions of people using millionaire players as pieces on the board. Too many high-profile managers are afraid to speak out against governing bodies such as UEFA and FIFA while on the other side of the table sits the governing bodies plotting their next move. Chess players know how important it is to think three moves ahead and, although the 2014 calendar will be dominated by images of the World Cup in Brazil, the years to follow will feature a long list of international games that will mean very little. UEFAs decision to move to 24 teams for the 2016 European Championships in France mean even fewer qualifiers will matter. Countries like Spain, Germany and Italy, for example, could send their under 21 teams to all their qualifiers and easily reach the tournament. And these will be the games that matter. Sprinkled amongst them will be friendly games arranged for international managers to see their players close up and try things with them in a game. These are the matches the governing bodies know they need to change. As we move into 2014, the sports consumer is demanding something important all of the time. A tell me it matters attitude is forcing sports all over the world to come up with tournaments and formats that stop as many meaningless games being played as possible. And then there is soccer. A sport dominated by club teams that, in 2013, still allow countries to take their players all over the globe to play games that mean nothing. It simply cannot continue down that path for much longer. Players like Sami Khedira and Christian Eriksen picked up bad injuries in recent international friendlies that significantly affected their club teams. Imagine Lionel Messi breaks his leg playing one of these friendly games for Argentina? One of two things need to happen, and will happen sooner rather than later. FIFA/UEFA will come up with a format to make these games matter, to put countries in league tables – similar to their world rankings – where they will get benefits of seeding for major tournaments and play more teams within their league. This is likely to happen soon because if it doesnt, the clubs will eventually have every right to put pressure on their players to not go for meaningless international matches. A World Cup year is magnificent for the international game but the four years in between are dangerous for FIFA/UEFA, even moreso now that the major tournaments – Euro 2016, Copa America – feature very little serious qualification, if any, for the major countries. Here in Canada, of course, we watch as outside observers. As 2013 turns into 2014, the sport again reaches new heights in terms of popularity. More people than ever are watching Premier League, Champions League and MLS games on television. With the lack of success of the Canadian mens national team, it is little wonder why most conversations about the professional game in Canada surround club football. The international game remains popular and Canada will be a wonderful place to sit and watch the 2014 World Cup amongst so many people from different countries. It is, indeed, one of the many things that make this country so great. However, we must remember it is still Canada. The mens national team has a long way to go to get back on peoples radar but, as we head into 2014, it is clear the same cannot be said about the womens game. In 2014 and 2015 Canada are ready to welcome the world. The 2014 Womens Under 20 World Cup will be a great dress rehearsal for when the main event comes to these shores a year later. The challenge for all international teams is to come close to the cohesion – on and off the pitch – displayed by club teams. That is already an advantage for Canada, as one of their star players, Diana Matheson, recently told me. “We really are like a family, the core of the team has been together for a long time and as we get older, we are making sure that everyone new into the camp feels part of it,” she said. Matheson and some of her teammates are not far away from seeing their faces everywhere across Canada during the 2015 World Cup. “We have a hope of how big we want it to get,” she said. The Canadian Soccer Association is blessed to have the Under 20 World Cup in 2014 as a way of gathering excitement for the big tournament the following summer. However, as national team defender Carmelina Moscato told me, it is more than just a promotional tool and those playing for Canada in that event will benefit tremendously. “The tournament in 2002 was what changed our lives – eight or nine of us on the team right now, thats the core group. It was such a kickstart to our careers that its exciting to know that opportunity is here again and see the next generation of players blossom in their own country.” “Playing at home is an incredible experience,” added captain Christine Sinclair. If you wish to watch those games, you should know that venue packs for the FIFA U-20 Womens World Cup Canada 2014 are on sale now and start as low as $40 plus fees. Of note, purchased venue packs in host cities that will also be part of the FIFA Womens World Cup Canada 2015™ will give purchasers an opt-in opportunity to be placed on a priority list to purchase venue packs to the 2015 competition in the same official host city. Mayer surrendered Dan Sextons goal with just over two minutes left in regulation, but was undoubtedly the best player on the ice as the Bulldogs won despite being outshot 46-29. The Alberta skip made an open draw to the button on the final stone of an extra end to defeat Manitobas Chelsea Carey 6-5 in the semifinal on Saturday night. Sweeting will face defending champion Rachel Homans Canada squad in the final on Sunday night. “Its huge,” said Sweeting, who is playing in her second Scotties. “To be one game away from a dream come true like that, it feels really good.” It wont be easy. Homan is 12-0 in the tournament, including a 10-5 win over Alberta on Tuesday in the round robin. “Its going to be a good game — close with lots of rocks in play,” said Sweeting. “Well try to get them drawing and hope the angles are in our favour. Theyre really good at the high, hard ones, so we have to watch out where our rocks are.” Alberta third Joanne Courtney said the key is to keep Homans team from pulling out the three-or-four point ends they have used to roll over most opponents in the tournament. “You cant afford to miss too many against them,”said Courtney. "Theyve scored a lot of big ends this week, so we have to be careful when they have hammer with what we leave around. “Theyre really good at weight. Sometimes you think you put it in the right spot and they make a triple or something.” Courtney put her second shot straight through the house in the extra end, but Carey was unable to make her pay for the error. “I knew shed want that one back, but the button was still open and, as a skip, thats all you want,” said Sweeting. Sweeting, who finished fourth in the round-robin portion of the tournament, got to the semifinal with an 8-7 victory Saturday morning over Saskatchewans Stefanie Lawton. Carey, who will play in the bronze medal game against Lawton, was dismayed at a spotty performance. “Its terrible, it sucks,” she said, lamenting too many missed shots. "There were a bunch throughout the game. “We fought the inch a bit. We played a great game (Friday against Homan) and didnt win, and played a not-great game today and didnt win. Its just not our week, I guess.” Manitoba emerged from the first five ends with a 2-1 lead, but neither team looked sharp. After the break, Sweeting hit for two in the sixth to take the lead, then ggot another in the seventh when Careys draw to the button ran long.dddddddddddd The next end, it was Sweeting who went long on a draw and Carey was able to score two. Then Sweeting was a tad heavy on a hit in a bid for two and had to settle for one. She took a 5-4 lead, but gave Carey the hammer going into the 10th. Carey left a draw short on her first rock, then drew for one to send it to an extra end. In the third-versus fourth game, Lawton left draws well short in the seventh and eighth ends to allow Alberta to steal five points en route to an 8-7 victory. The missed shots left her squad down 8-3 with two ends to play. They closed the gap at the end but the outcome was not in doubt. The Saskatchewan skip looked devastated. “I had great draw weight at the beginning of the game and I just seemed to lose it after the sixth end,” the Saskatoon resident said. “Just two tough draws and I couldnt make it for the girls and I feel not so good about that.” Saskatchewan looked to have taken control with a steal of one in the fifth for a 3-1 lead, but things went south after the break. Lawton missed a double takeout that gave Sweeting an easy two to tie it in the sixth. Then Lawton left a draw short to give Alberta a steal of two in the seventh for its first lead of the game. A crisp Sweeting double takeout in the eight left a crowd of Alberta stones in the house. Lawton tried to draw into them but a groan went up from the grandstands as she left it short again for a steal of three. She rebounded with two in the ninth and Sweetings rink played with fire in the 10th by letting Saskatchewan put stones in the house. But a Sweeting takeout with the last stone sealed the victory despite Saskatchewans steal of two. “The ice was great,” said Lawton. "It was a little keener and straighter but nothing we couldnt adjust to. “It was just a matter of making better shots.” Now she hopes to salvage something by taking third place. “Were going to come out and play for that bronze medal because wed be very proud to win that one,” she said. It is Lawtons third Scotties after appearances in 2005 and 2009, and all three times she lost in the 3-versus-4 game. She finished third in round-robin play at 8-3 but lost to Yukon (2-9) in her last game Friday. Fourth-place Sweeting had lost 8-6 to Lawton in the round robin. Téma: Jak postupovat / eline dunk with 57.3 seconds to go HILTON HEAD ISLAND, S.C. — Matt Kuchar saw his well-struck 5-iron on the 18th hole at the RBC Heritage come up way short of the target and settle in a front bunker. “Well,” he thought as he walked toward the shot, “there are a lot worse places to be.” For Kuchar, there was no better place — and no better shot in the tournament. He followed with a stunning hole-out on Harbour Town Golf Links closing, lighthouse hole, to overcome a four-shot deficit for a one-stroke victory and end nearly a month of Sundays where he came close to a title only to lose at the end. Kuchar shot a 64 to finish at 11-under 273, one stroke ahead of Luke Donald, who had his third second place and fifth top-three finish here in the past six years. Donalds latest chance ended Kuchars winning shot. He hit it solid, felt it was a good line and watched it rattle home. “I heard the crowd go crazy,” Kuchar said. “Then I went crazy.” Kuchar punched the air to celebrate, grabbed his cap and swung it around to the cheers of the crowd. It was Kuchars seventh career PGA Tour victory. He earned $1.044 million and his first trophy since the Memorial last June. It also followed a stretch of golf were Kuchar was in contention nearly every week. He was two shots behind winner Steven Bowditch at the Texas Open on March 30, then lost a playoff at the Houston Open a week later on Matt Jones 42-yard chip in. Kuchar was in the mix at Augusta National a week ago, having a share of the lead on Sunday before a four-putt double bogey at the fourth hole dropped him from contention. Kuchar, at No. 6 in the world the highest-ranked golfer here, couldve taken a break like other top competitors, but hoped the momentum would carry into Harbour Town. “Its awfully sweet to have another chance,” Kuchar said. Kuchar made up the four shots on Donald with seven birdies in his first 10 holes. Then nearly gave away another tournament when he three-putted from less than eight feet away at the par-3 17th, a bogey that dropped him into a tie for the top spot |

Téma: Jak postupovat / ght for its third straight New O NEWARK, N.J. — Martin Brodeur is staying with the New Jersey Devils. Despite speculation that the Devils were considering dealing the NHLs career leader in wins, the 41-year-old will finish his 20th consecutive season in New Jersey after Wednesdays trade deadline expired. Devils general manager Lou Lamoriello refused to say whether any teams either inquired about Brodeurs availability or they offered him to anyone. He also refused to say whether Brodeur had waived his no-trade clause or given him a list of teams to which he would agree to be traded. Lamoriello blamed the recent trade speculation about Brodeur on the media. “Its just a shame that without no substance at different times and no facts that people say things,” Lamoriello said. The longtime Devils executive, however, refused to say whether Brodeur was a topic in his trade discussions. “Why are we dealing in hypotheticals, I have no idea,” Lamoriello said. “Its not the case. So why we react and try to look for something thats no there and create a story out of nothing.” Brodeur did not attend the Devils optional practice Wednesday and he was not immediately available for comment. The NHLs career leader in wins, minutes played, games played, losses and shutouts had fuelled some of the trade talk by saying he was not happy with playing time in recent weeks. Counting his 4-3 win over Detroit on Tuesday, he had started two of the Devils last 10 games, playing a backup to Cory Schneider. Brodeur started the season as the Devils top goaltender but he has taken a back seat to Schneider. Devils coach Pete DeBoer said there isnt a No. 1 goaltender for the Devils. “I think Cory grabbed the ball here prior to the Olympic break and ran with it for a while,” DeBoer said. “Prior to that, Marty ran with it for a while. So I think its been there for either of them to grab and they have at different respective times. And thats the case moving forward.” Brodeur has a special place in the hearts of Devils fans. They chanted “Mar-tee, Mar-tee” at times during the win over the Red Wings, in case Tuesday was the last game for the man who has been awarded the Vezina Trophy as the leagues top goalie four times and is a three-time Stanley Cup champion while playing his entire career with the Devils. “I dont think you ever replace Marty,” Schneider said after Wednesdays workout. “I am not him. I am not going to be him. I will try to be myself and do my thing and take some of the stuff that I learned from a lot of great people that I played with along the way, him being one of them.” Brodeurs contract expires after this season and he could explore free agency next season. In their only move of the day, the Devils acquired forward Tuomo Ruutu from the Carolina Hurricanes for centre Andrei Loktionov and a conditional third-round pick in 2017. “He does the things we like to see, he gets right in your face,” Lamoriello said of Ruutu, who has five goals and 11 assists in 57 games this season and waived a no-trade clause to come to New Jersey. The 31-year-old Finn has shown scoring ability. He has 138 goals and 186 assists in 606 career games over 10 seasons with Chicago and Carolina. “Our intention certainly was to try and get a top nine forward with a lot of grit, who competes and who has a habit of playing in big games,” Lamoriello said. “Weve played against him enough over the years. We feel good about it.” The Hurricanes have agreed to retain some of Ruutus salary, which is $5 million annually. Loktionov had four goals and eight assists in 48 games. He was acquired from Los Angeles in 2013. Lamoriello is confident that Devils can find a way to get back to the playoffs after missing them last season. “I think some of our players are just starting to find themselves after the break, and a couple of others who are ready to achieve,” he said. “We are a team. We play like a team. Our coaching staff has done a great job of maximizing that. Once you get in the playoffs, its anyones chance but first you have to get there. Were right there in the mix. We have to win. Ii cant put it any simpler than that.” cheap jerseys .
