PITTSBURGH — Nathan MacKinnon has been compared to Sidney Crosby for much of his life. The two grew up in the same Canadian town and both went No. 1 in the NHL draft. Now they get to take a much closer look at each other. MacKinnon and the Colorado Avalanche visit Crosby and the Pittsburgh Penguins on Monday night in the first NHL matchup of the pride of Cole Harbour, Nova Scotia. Catch the game on TSN2 starting at 7:30pm et/4:30pm pt. The Avalanche and Penguins are each off to a 7-1 start, with MacKinnon and Crosby playing a key role. The 26-year-old Crosby has seven goals and 10 assists for a league-best 17 points. MacKinnon, who turned 18 on Sept. 1, has a goal and six assists. MacKinnon called Crosby the best player in the world and said the centre is “on fire right now.” But MacKinnon is focused on what he needs to do to help the Avalanche get another win. “Any time hes out there when youre not on the ice, you sometimes get to enjoy and watch some good players when youre playing against them,” he said. “But when youre out there, you dont worry about who youre playing against. You worry about what you have to do.” Crosby knows a lot about what MacKinnon is going through in his first year in the NHL. Crosby, who was the No. 1 pick in the 2005 draft, faced high expectations when he was an 18-year-old rookie and had 102 points in his first season with Pittsburgh. MacKinnon became one of the leagues top prospects when he starred for Halifax of the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League in the previous two seasons. He was the most valuable player of the Memorial Cup in May, leading his team to the title. “Obviously he skates really well, and I dont think you see too many young guys that can shoot the puck like he can in their first year,” Crosby said. “I think hes got a great shot. I think hes got all the tools — really good hands, he works hard, and hes not afraid to go into traffic areas and create chances that way. So I think he gives himself a lot of opportunities to create things.” The Avalanche struggled during last years lockout-shortened season, but they have been one of the leagues surprise teams so far this year under new coach Patrick Roy, a Hall of Fame goaltender. Penguins coach Dan Bylsma said he expects to see a young team with fresh legs and a lot of speed on Monday night, and MacKinnon is certainly part of that mix. Hailing from the same hometown as one of the NHLs best players puts a lot of pressure on a rising player. But Crosby believes guys such as MacKinnon and Seth Jones — a defenceman who was the Nashville Predators first-round draft pick this year — are better prepared for the NHL due to their extensive experience coming into the league. “Both (MacKinnon) and Seth Jones were talked about for a long time,” Crosby said. “Theyve been through everything — World Cup, World Juniors, and all that stuff. So I think everything has prepared them to get to this point and, as everyone has seen pretty quickly here, it hasnt taken them long to get used to NHL hockey. Theyve adjusted well.” . .B. — Canadas Rachel Homan had ideal preparation for the playoffs at the Ford World Curling Championships with a pair of hard-fought wins over tenacious opponents Thursday.SALT LAKE CITY — There are times when Alec Burks is driving to the hoop and he has no idea what hes going to do. “I surprise myself on some of these shots I make,” Utahs reserve guard said. The Jazz breathed a collective sigh of relief when Burks put together a string of circus shots after the rest of the team had gone cold. Burks scored 10 of his 26 points in the final two minutes to lift the Jazz to a 105-100 win over the skidding Philadelphia 76ers on Wednesday night. “Alec did a great job closing the game out for us, attacking the basket,” said Utah coach Ty Corbin after the Jazz endured a six-minute scoreless stretch with seven missed shots and two turnovers. The game was tied 91-1ll when the Jazz looked to Burks to create some offence. The guard made a number of acrobatic drives to the basket and capped a personal 9-0 run with a soaring dunk to make it 100-91 with 22 seconds to play. Utahs top scorer off the bench got to the free throw line with his aggressive play, making 13 of 14 from the stripe in 22 minutes of play. “I relish contact. I really was just trying to be aggressive,” Burks said. “Thats my game, going to the hoop.” His clutch scoring extended Utahs season-best winning streak to three and sent the Sixers to their ninth straight road loss to the Jazz. Evan Turner scored 21 points and Michael Carter-Williams and Thaddeus Young had 19 apiece for Philadelphia. The 76ers lost their eighth straight, the last two by more than 40 points while nearly matching the NBA mark for the largest total margin of defeat in consecutive games. Philadelphia has given up nearly 116 points per game over the eight-game skid. Gordon Hayward scored 17 and Marvin Williams had 13 points and a season-high 14 rebounds as the Jazz had six players score in double figures. The problem was that no one could find the hoop in the middle of the fourth quarter when they surrendered a 14-point lead. Burks hit a 3-pointer and Richard Jefferson stole a pass and dunked for an 85-71 lead with 10:02 to play. The 76ers then rallied, extending their defence and holding the Jazz scoreless for more than six minutes during a 13-0 run. Spencer Hawes tipped in his own miss to cap the run and then Carter-Williams converted a three-point play after Trey Burke broke Utahs drought to tie the game at 91 with 2:10 to play. Burks had 24 to lead the Jazz over the Lakers in Los Angeles on Tuesday and then continued his instant offence in the second half the back-to-back set.dddddddddddd Utahs reserves outscored their Philadelphia counterparts, 56-10. James Anderson, who had 15 points, made a trio of 3-pointers in the final 18 seconds, but it was too late after Burks outburst. The Sixers showed some fight in their last game before the All-Star break and the finale of a disastrous three-game road trip. Following a 123-78 loss to the Los Angeles Clippers, the 76ers fell behind by 49 points before losing 123-80 to Golden State on Monday No other team in NBA history had lost two straight games by at least 40 points each. Philadelphia has now done it twice, having lost back-to-back games in April 1994 by a combined 93 points. The Detroit Pistons set the record for margin of defeat in consecutive games, losing 95 points combined in back-to-back games in November 1966, according to STATS. One highlight for Philadelphia has been the play of rookie Carter-Williams, who had eight assists and leads all rookies in scoring, rebounding and assists. This was the first game between Carter-Williams, who was drafted 11th, and fellow lottery pick Burke (picked ninth) since their Final Four meeting in April. Burke struggled again Wednesday as he did in Michigans 61-56 win over Syracuse, when he had seven points on 1-of-8 shooting. Burke had seven points on 3-of-12 shooting against Philadelphia. “I thought Michael played with great poise. He could have handled this particular matchup in different ways. I thought he grew tonight,” Sixers coach Brett Brown said. Derrick Favours left the game in the first quarter after re-injuring his right hip. He missed a wide-open layup on the first Jazz possession of the game and never got any lift. In six minutes of play, he limped slightly and then left the game and went to the locker room. The Jazz centre has missed four other games with the hip strain and Utah had lost all six contests when Favours is out with injury. NOTES: Brandon Davies, who was raised in Utah and played at BYU, has missed the Sixers last 14 games with a fractured pinkie finger. … In the third quarter, the Sixers purposely fouled Rudy Gobert, who shoots 51 per cent from the line, but the 7-footer swished both attempts. … Philadelphia backup big man Lavoy Allen left the game with a sore left knee and did not return. JERSEY CITY, N.J. — John Elway says Peyton Manning cannot stamp himself as the greatest quarterback in NFL history even if he wins the Super Bowl on Sunday. Elway told The Associated Press on Wednesday that hes come to realize the argument over whos the best QB ever is a lot like beauty: Its in the eye of the beholder. “I dont think theres ever going to be a very best. I think theres always going to be a conversation,” said Elway, the Broncos Hall of Fame quarterback-turned-executive vice-president who lured Manning to Denver after his release from Indianapolis two years ago. Manning has the chance to become the first starting quarterback to lead two franchises to Super Bowl titles when the Broncos play the Seahawks at MetLife Stadium. When Manning signed with the Broncos on March 20, 2012, Elway declared, “My goal is to make Peyton Manning the best quarterback thats ever played the game.” But at the team hotel on the Hudson River on Wednesday morning, Elway said he now realizes that question will never truly be answered “even though when he walks away Peyton may well have broken every single record.” “So, youre going to always have your detractors, but he may have a large percentage of whos the best, you know what I mean?” Elway said. “Yeah, all he can do is he can continue to cement his legacy, especially if he continues to keep going like the year he had this year. And Im going to try to make sure he has all the weapons to be able to do that.” Manning has brushed off all questions about his legacy this week. With Manning leading the huddle and Elway the front office, Denver is back in the big game for the first time since the Broncos won back-to-back titles in 1998 and 99, after which Elway tried his hand at running restaurants and car dealerships. Those businesses “dont have scoreboards on Sundays,” so Elway returned to his beloved Broncos in 2011 to rescue the foundering franchise after a slow descent under Mike Shanahan and a nosedive under Josh McDaniels. Tebowmania quickly came and went and with Manning throwing for 99 touchdowns, the Broncos have gone 28-6 the last two years. Elway looked more relaxed in his suit and tie than he ever did during the weeks preceding the five Super Bowls he played in, wins over Green Bay and Atlanta after losses to the Giants, Redskins and 49ers. Thats because Super Bowl week is way more stressful on a quarterback, he said. “Well, Im finally at the stage where I worry about what I can and cant control,” Elway said. This is quite the contrast from Jan. 12, when the Broncos fended off a fourth-quarter rally for a 24-17 win over San Diego that avoided a repeat of their crushing loss to Baltimore exactly a year earlier. Elway said he was “absolutely miserable” watching that game and “it took me four hours to get the pit out of my stomach afterward.” “San Diego was different because that was a hump we had to get over because of Baltimore,” Elway said. “So, that was something that we had to put in our rearview mirror because if we hadnt done it, then were going to be talking about it for another full year. Then, were dealing with another year of the same thing.” That 38-35 double-overtime loss to the Ravens, helped along by Rahim Moores infamous gaffe that allowed Jacoby Jones to haul in a 70-yard touchdown pass in the final minute of regulation, haunted the Broncos for 365 days — and might return to burden them anew if they dont beat Seattle on Sunday night. As Terrance Knighton put it, “Our goal wasnt to get here. Our goal was to get out of here — with the Lombardi Trophy.” Thats been Elways message since last January, delivered both subtly and forcefully at times. Manning said Elway created an “uncomfortable atmosphere” at Dove Valley last off-season. Elway used Denvers sloppy 40-10 preseason loss at Seattle in mid-August as an opportunity to send a message about effort and expectations. “John pretty much laid it on us,” Manning recalled Wednesday. “He was not happy with that game. It was a butt-kicking, and whether its preseason or regular season, he was just sharing his thoughts that that wont be accepted.” So unusual was Elways exasperation that Manning took notes, which he said he reviewed this week in preparing for the Seahawks. “He talked about what he thought our potential could be and didnt want to see that wasted,” Manning recounted. “So, I think guys got the message. If I was reading it the right way, he mightve been giving the message to some coaches as well. … I think it was a challenge, too, that he saw some real potential in this team. He thought it had the makings of a special team and just wanted to be sure we were going to max out.” . The NHLs Mar. 5 Trade Deadline is drawing closer and teams will be deciding on whether to buy or sell. Check out todays trade-related reports and speculation from around the NHL beat. And follow TSN.ca through Deadline Day for all the updates. Mystery Men The Ottawa Senators are trying to get down to business, theyre just having start-up issues. Senators general manager Bryan Murray told The Ottawa Sun he was close to a minor trade that would have brought the Senators a forward, but that the deal was taken off the table prior to completion. “We had a couple of teams I was talking fairly serious to about a smaller type deal that would add one player to our team, but it doesnt appear its going to happen at this point,” Murray said. The Sun surmises the Senators are still looking for a winger to play with Jason Spezza and that the Sens still covet Mississauga-native Matt Moulson. Waiting on Bolland The Toronto Maple Leafs may be looking to add bodies before the deadline as they cling to third in the Atlantic Division, but much of their activity may well depend on the return of Dave Bolland. Bollands eventual return – whether before or after the Olympic break – will necessitate some roster movement on its own, with the Toronto Star reporting that at least two players will need to be moved to get down to the 23-man roster limit. However, his return could also move some salary cap dominoes, especially with the team having added Tim Gleason into the mix over the duration of Bollands rehab. The Star report points toward the Leafs recent resurgence in secondary scoring as one factor to consider before any possible addition as well as managements stated belief in the teams depth. Addition and Subtraction? The Buffalo Sabres – currently 30th overall in the National Hockey League – will undoubtedly be busy at the deadline, but will they exclusively be in sell-off mode? The Buffalo News notes that should the team pull the trigger on a deal to move long-time starting netminder Ryan Miller, the team may also have to consider adding to its options in net for both the present and future. Jhonas Enroth is 1-10-5 and hasnt won since Oct. 25. The Buffalo News states that if new general manager Tim Murray is not confident he can win with Enroth moving forward, the Sabres could be in the market for a goalie. According to a report from ESPN, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers are shopping the veteran CB and plan on releasing him Wednesday if they cant find a trade partner. MIAMI — Deron Williams got his first preseason action. LeBron James and Chris Bosh didnt need any more. Williams scored 11 points in 10 minutes, Alan Anderson scored 17 points, and the Brooklyn Nets finished the exhibition season with a 108-87 win over the Miami Heat on Friday night. The Nets went 5-2 in the preseason, the Heat 5-3. Paul Pierce scored 16 points and Jason Terry added 14 for the Nets, who made 11 of 16 tries from 3-point range in the first half and eventually led by as many as 31. Brooklyn played without Kevin Garnett (rest) and Andrei Kirilenko (back). Udonis Haslem went 8 for 9 from the field and scored 16 points for Miami, which got 12 from Mario Chalmers (on 6 for 7 shooting) and 12 from Ray Allen. Michael Beasleyy scored 11 for the Heat.dddddddddddd James and Bosh got the night off to rest. The Heat will hoist the franchises third NBA championship banner on Tuesday night before opening the season at home against the Chicago Bulls. Brooklyn opens Wednesday at Cleveland. Other than Garnett, the Nets went with their anticipated opening-night lineup, and all eyes were on Williams — who had been out for the entire preseason because of a right ankle problem. He looked good as new. Williams made three 3-pointers in a span of 67 seconds of the opening quarter, and he added a short jumper early in the second quarter before coming out of the game for good. The game was tied at 40 with about 6 minutes left in the half — and over the next 17 minutes, the Nets went on a 49-18 run to pull away. BOSTON – Shane Victorino is back in the lineup for the Boston Red Sox for Game 6 of the World Series against the St. Louis Cardinals. Victorino is batting sixth and playing right field after missing two games because of back tightness. Victorino was available to pinch hit in Monday nights game, but he did not come off the bench in the Red Soxs victory that gave them a 3-2 lead in the series. The 32-year-old Gold Glove winner batted .294 in the regular season and .429 against Tampa Bay in the first round. But he was 3 for 24 in the AL championship series and is 0 for 10 so far in the World Series. He spent most of the regular season batting second, hitting from the No. 6 spot just twice. The 27-year-old Niskanen, the more offensive-minded of the pair of defencemen joining the Capitals, got a $40.25 million, seven-year contract. “Its a very big commitment from Washington. Thats no small thing. Youre talking a seven-year commitment for a very substantial amount of money,” said Niskanen, who got married Saturday.FIVE QUICK THOUGHTS ON RAPTORS/NETS-GAME 2 1. MATCHUPS: Its really fun to watch both head coaches move around the chess pieces and create situations where they get their better players in scenarios where they have the supposed upper hand. Its fascinating stuff to key in on and its the essence of NBA hoops. Been impressed with both coaching staffs preparation and attention to detail. Plays out of timeouts from both sides have been well scripted and the amount of details flying around in both huddles is evident. As a former coach, I really enjoy and respect this aspect of these games. 2. LANDRY FIELDS: Totally agree with this move and I said it the other day. Hes the most capable defender that they have in the Joe Johnson matchup due to his size, strength, athleticism, smarts and overall range. Hes a guy you can play for a possession or two at the four-spot as well to match Paul Pierce. He made a big impact on Tuesday night in spite of not scoring. Ive said it many times before – yes, he has limitations but hes a winning player that does the little things that teams must have to get over the hump. A true pro just like so many of the guys on both of these teams. 3. TURNOVERS: Toronto has 40 in just two games – at home! To be tied 1-1 in the series after that youve got to feel really fortunate. You do that on the road and this series will be over quick. Nets defence in the half court has been sensational. Multiple help and amazing communication and coverages. Raptors must realize that the Nets are incredibly help-conscious and play on that and look to create their help and then get rid of the balll quick to the next guy and keep them on the run and prevent them loading up on the guy with the ball.dddddddddddd Must be a whole lot tougher with the ball and play through contact. Not going to get the whistle-deal with it and be that much better. It can be done. Move the ball side-top-side and make the defence cover. Better spacing, screening, ball and player movement and inside-out play are imperative. 4. BENCH USAGE: Jason Kidd goes with 11 guys and Dwane Casey with eight. Different styles. Considering that both teams didnt play from Saturday afternoon until Tuesday night and you would think you would load up your starters minutes, yet Jason Kidd wants his team all in on every possession defensively so no plays off. No right or wrong answer here, just interesting to watch the points of emphasis on both sides play out. 5. CROWDS (both inside and outside ACC): Wow! My goodness, I have goose bumps just typing this. Im so proud of the fans and feel so happy for them that theyre getting to experience this. Blown away by the enthusiasm and atmosphere. Toronto is making a major statement that its a major league hoops town and that this country is embracing this sport more and more each day. The singing of the Canadian national anthem by the fans is awesome – it chokes me up. Been working as a Raptors broadcaster for the past 16 years and have seen all of the good and all of the not-so-good. Your loyalty to the Raptors and the growth of the sport are truly appreciated. Im so fortunate to be a part of it. This has been remarkable to watch develop over the years. Enjoy – you deserve it. DENVER – Justin Morneau wondered out loud just how many teams have turned a triple play and hit a walkoff homer in the same game. A better question yet may be this: How many times has the same player been involved in both? Morneau hit a two-run homer in the 10th inning and helped the Colorado Rockies turn the third triple play in team history as they beat the San Diego Padres 8-6 on Sunday. Definitely a pretty good afternoon for Morneau, who hit the sixth walkoff homer of his career. Hes making himself right at home batting behind Troy Tulowitzki and Carlos Gonzalez. After Gonzalez singled earlier in the inning, Morneau lined a two-out, 3-2 fastball from Dale Thayer (2-2) to straightaway centre. Morneau thought for sure he got enough of it, too, but then Cameron Maybin drifted back and back, like he might have a play on it. He didnt. “Scared me a little bit,” Morneau said. “As good of athlete as he is, if he cant catch it, its definitely gone.” Morneau sprinted around the bases to the applause from the crowd and flipped his helmet off after passing third. He was mobbed at home by his teammates. “Justin is having a phenomenal season,” Rockies manager Walt Weiss said. “Great to see him get the big hit.” Thayer insisted he made a quality pitch and that he didnt think it was leaving the park. “But it doesnt surprise me it went out. He hit it hard,” Thayer said. Nick Masset (1-0) pitched a perfect 10th for his first win with Colorado. LaTroy Hawkins blew his first save of the season in the ninth as he surrendered a tying two-run homer to Everth Cabrera. Corey Dickerson had a two-run homer and Tulowitzki added a solo shot in the fifth to keep up his hot hitting at Coors Field, where hes batting .571 in 18 games. Seth Smith and Rene Rivera hit solo homers for the Padres, who return home following a 3-3 road excursion. “This was a game that was in the balance the whole way,” Padres manager Bud Black said. “Both teams kept pecking away at each other the whole game, which is typical of this ballpark.” Juan Nicasio didnt have his best stuff, but was bailed out all afternoon by his defence, no more so than in the third. With runners on first and second, third baseman Nolan Arenado fielded a grounder by Carlos Quentin and stepped on the bag. He threw to second baseman D.J. LeMahieu, who relayed the ball on to first for the triple play. Quentin was originally ruled safe at first, but the second base umpire called Smith for baserunner interference as he slid into second. “That was different than anything Ive ever seen,” Morneau said. The momentum from that play ignited the offence as the Rockies scored four runs in the bottom of the frame. Charlie Blackmon had a two-run single and Dickerson added a two-run homer. Usually a reliever, Donn Roach made his first major league start as he filled in for Andrew Cashner, who went on the 15-day disabled list because of soreness in his pitching elbow. Roach was on a pitch count and out of the game early, giving up four runs in three innings. Black elected to bat Roach eighth in the order and third baseman Alexi Amarista ninth, just to give the team more double-switch flexibility early in the game. It worked, too, when Roach was lifted for Will Venable in the fourth, with Venable hitting an RBI single. Roach couldnt find his rhythm in the first as he walked leadoff batter Blackmon and then Dickerson. It didnt matter, though, as both were thrown out trying to steal second — with a little assistance from replay. Blackmon was originally called safe on his steal attempt, but Black requested an appeal and the umpires overturned the call. After Dickerson walked, he tried to steal and, like Blackmon, was called safe when the tag was high. Black jogged out of the dugout to appeal, with the umpires again reversing the call. According to the team, its the first time a manager has successfully overturned two calls in the same inning. NOTES: The last time San Diego hit into a triple play was April 15, 2012, at Los Angeles against the Dodgers. … Both teams are off Monday. … Before the game, Colorado activated C Wilin Rosario (viral infection) and optioned C Mike McKenry to Triple-A Colorado Springs. … The triple play in the third was Colorados first since Tulowitzki turned an unassisted one on April 29, 2007, against Atlanta. PITTSBURGH — If the Detroit Red Wings and Pittsburgh Penguins meet in the first round of the NHL playoffs, things will be different than they were Wednesday night at Consol Energy Center. The Red Wings will likely have Jimmy Howard in goal and are hopeful captain Henrik Zetterberg will return from an extended injury absence. The Penguins should get Evgeni Malkin back from a foot injury, too. But in outplaying Pittsburgh and tying the score late in the third period before losing 4-3 in a shootout, Detroit showed that it could present serious matchup problems for the Metropolitan Division champions. “I thought our team played real well tonight. I thought we were better than them,” Red Wings coach Mike Babcock said after the shootout loss clinched a playoff spot. “We carried play, in my opinion, tonight, for sure. I thought we played well.” By getting a point on the same night the Columbus Blue Jackets beat the Dallas Stars, the Red Wings fell to the Eastern Conferences second wild-card spot, even though each team has 91 points. As Babcock pointed out, the Blue Jackets have the tiebreaker that could give them Pittsburgh, while the Red Wings get the Bruins. “Im not spending a whole lot of time awake worrying about this stuff,” he said. “Were just in and whoever we get, were going to be a tough out.” Babcock said his Red Wings didnt score as many goals as they should have, partially a product of a strong game from Penguins goaltender Marc-Andre Fleury. But they also put 37 shots on net to the Penguins 24, giving up two of three goals on the power play and another when Jonas Gustavsson couldnt hang on to a puck and Jussi Jokinen poked it in. “Weve matched up well against them,” said forward Riley Sheahan, whose goal with 1:15 left got Detroit the point it needed. "Theyre a really skilled team and weve got some skill as well. “If were matched up against them or whoever else, its going to be a lot of fun.” Fleury likewise said it would be a “fun matchup,” though one that could see him tested a year after another disappointing playoff showing. This is the same team Fleury beat to win the Stanley Cup in 2009, though only a handful of players remain. “I think theres no easy team that will make the playoffs,” Fleury said. “Detroits a good team, they play hard, they got some skills. … Its going to be a good challenge for us.” Penguins coach Dan Bylsma said after his teams morning skate that aspects of the game could affect a potential playoff series, like if one team scored three times on the power play or one player won all his faceoff attempts. Pittsburgh went 2-for-4 on the power play, so that was good enough. “I dont think we were going to analyze the score of the game and project forward if it is a possible playoff matchup,” Bylsma said. “We wanted to do certain things in areas of the game and maybe have that be a statement for how we played. Tonight we did that with the power play, for sure.” Any statements made in the shootout can be overlooked, whether it was Fleury channelling Dominik Hasek for a diving save or Jussi Jokinen scoring the winner off the shaft of Gustavssons stick. If this were a playoff game, the Red Wings and Penguins wouldve kept playing. Thats not necessary yet, as Jokinen thinks these teams know each other well enough. “I think maybe it helps both teams. I think both teams are pretty familiar,” Jokinen said. “They are in-your-face all the time. They play that man-to-man, very aggressive all over the ice. At times we did a good job of that, and at times we need to be better and do a better job making sure we get the pucks out and get pucks behind them.” . FIVE NBA THOUGHTS: Greetings from San Francisco! This is one of my favorite cities. Today, well look at five frontcourt players today, here from the Bay Area. 1. AMIR JOHNSON (Raptors): I cant figure out what the issue or problem is, but based upon what Im seeing, hes not right. Hes one of my all-time favourite people in the 16 years Ive spent as a broadcaster and I cant put my finger on why hes in a funk. Hes not playing with the same energy or enthusiasm that were used to seeing. I dont see the smile and happy disposition, either. Hopefully, for his sake and his teams sake, this is just a blip on the radar. Johnson is truly one of the good guys in the profession and leaves everything he has on the court for you. The Raptors need him at his best. If not, theyre in big trouble. 2. ANTHONY DAVIS (Pelicans): It was a tough break for him with the hand injury in New York last night. Hes been playing wonderful ball and has been making nice strides in his overall game. I love his shot-blocking and rebounding ability and his offensive game with added strength and stamina will continue to emerge. The concern you have with him is going to be whether or not he can stay healthy enough to log a major number of games each season, so that his improvements become habit and reach that next level. Only time will tell, but hes shown me in one season plus this one that hes got a chance to be a really good one…IF he stays healthy. 3. ROBERT SACRE (Lakers): The Canadian has been getting a little bit of run this season and its nice to see his numbers from last nights game vs. Portland (12 points with seven boards and four assists.) Its never easy being on a team where you know youre minutes are going to be limited. From what Ive seen this year, when his name is called, he comes in the game and gives you great energy and passion. That goes a long way in helping your chances to stick around in the NBA. Good for him. 4. ANDRE DRUMMOND (Pistons): Wow. What a game vs. the Sixers last night (31 points and 19 rebounds.) Consider what would happen if he could ever make free throws (he was seven for 18 last night.) Hes a remarkable talent who is an example of the importance in finding a few skills that you do really, really well and hanging your hat on them. If you do, good things will happen for you. He is a terror on the glass, finishes in the lane and alters a bunch of shots. Drummond was just a terrific draft pick for Joe Dumars. Hes far from polished, but hes an impact guy. 5. TIMOFEY MOZGOV (Nuggets): Ive had a chance to watch this young man develop over the years and hes a fascinating guy to watch. He made a few elite, big time plays yesterday for his team against Toronto yesterday. Ive said it before and Ill say it again: if this guy was a throw in during the Carmelo Anthony trade, what was Knicks owner James Dolan thinking? He forced team president Donnie Walsh to pay a kings ransom for Melo and former Nuggets GM and current Raptors GM Masai Ujuri fleeced them. This guy has a load of talent and plays very hard, as well. Hes got the motor you want in a big man and a nice guy to bring off the bench – what a luxury. Mozgov was a good get. . Cross-country skier Brian McKeever won the mens visually impaired 20-kilometre race on Monday. . Sabathia did not get a decision on Monday against Tampa Bay, as he allowed three runs and eight hits in seven innings. Hes 13-4 on the year to go along with a 3.42 ERA. Since winning six decisions over a nine-start stretch, Sabathia is 0-1 over his last two outings, but still has only allowed more than three runs once in his previous 10 trips to the hill. http://www.hockeyleafsjerseysshop.com/White-Dar…. They did take one chance on a free agent-to-be however, and it didnt pay off. Rory Kohlert, selected by the Redblacks in the expansion draft from Winnipeg, has signed as a free agent with the Blue Bombers. . A few changes have been made this year, as RDS will no longer be producing it. Instead, the Canadiens have hired their own team of creative masterminds to produce the reality series. .S. — Kelsey Rocque remains the only unbeaten womens skip at the Canadian junior curling championships.Eugenie Bouchard will make her tournament debut in Montreal tonight when she takes on qualifier Shelby Rogers at the Rogers Cup. Bouchard, a native of nearby Westmount, QC, will be playing her first match since losing her first career Grand Slam final last month. Despite being defeated in straight sets by Petra Kvitova in the Wimbledon final, the 20-year-old is looking forward to taking what she learned from loss into a new tournament. “I was disappointed to lose in the final,” Bouchard said Sunday. “I expect a lot from myself and I felt I could have done better, but it was a huge learning experience in the end. After a couple of days I was able to reflect. I felt I played a good two weeks and I was proud of that, for sure, but coming so close to achieving a dream just motivated me more. Im really excited to finish the year strong. Well see what happens.” Bouchard, the tournaments fifth seed and ranked eighth in the world, had a bye to the tournaments second round. Rogers won two qualifying matches to enter the tournaments main draw before defeating Ajla Tomljanovic 6-4, 7-6 on Monday.dddddddddddd The Wimbledon finalist has been the most consistent player in womens tennis this year, and is only the only woman to have reached the semifinal round at each of the years first three major tournaments. She entered the year ranked 32nd in the world and rose to seventh after Wimbledon before falling back one spot from taking a month off. Bouchard will now set her sights on reclaiming her seventh spot, and moving further up the rankings. "After making the top 20, in the back of my head, Im saying lets get to top 10, " Bouchard said. "Now, the next step is top 5. “Its about slowly building. I dont want to worry too much about specific ranking goals, but its motivating to see your number improve. I just want to be a better tennis player by the end of the year. Im working hard and I think I can achieve that.” Bouchard will have a tough road to winning the Montreal tournament. She is in the same quarter of the draw as top-ranked Serena Williams and the same half of the draw as Maria Sharapova, who defeated her in the French Open semifinal. ORLANDO, Fla. — Boston Red Sox general manager Ben Cherington was voted The Sporting News baseball executive of the year following the teams worst-to-first turnaround. The award, based on a vote of 31 major league executives, was announced Monday night at the annual GM meetings. Voting ended before the post-season, when the Red Sox went on to win their third World Series title in 10 years and first since Cherington succeeded Theo Epstein as general manager in October 2011. Cherington received 15 votes, followed by Pittsburghs Neal Huntington (nine), Kansas Citys Dayton Moore (four) and Atlantas Frank Wren (three). Boston won the award for the fourth time, following owner Tom Yawkey (1946) and GM Dick OConnell (1967 and 75). Founded in 1886, TSN ended its print edition at the end of last year but remains available online. “Definitely unexpected,” Cherington said. “I consider this to be an award for the organization, not for me. Coming off the year we had in 2012, I also sort of see it as usually an award that goes to an organization that does work over a period of time and not necessarily in one year.” Following a late collapse in 2011, Boston was decimated by injuries last year and went 69-93 under first-year manager Bobby Valentine, its poorest record since 1965. A roster turnover began in August 2012 when Adrian Gonzalez, Josh Beckett, Carl Crawford and their big-money contracts were traded to the Los Angeles Dodgers in a deal that saved Boston just more than $261.66 million through 2018. Valentine was fired after the season and replaced by former Toronto manager John Farrell, Bostons pitching coach from 2007-10. The Red Sox restocked during the off-season by signing seven major league free agents for contracts of three years or fewer at a total of $100.45 million, a group that included Mike Napoli, Shane Victorino, Jonny Gomes, Koji Uehara, Stephen Drew, David Ross and Ryan Dempster. They helped Boston win the AL East, return to the playoffs for the first time since 2009 and help the city heal following the Boston Marathon bombings in April. Drew, Napoli and Jacoby Ellsbury turned down Bostons $14.1 million qualifying offers Monday, and the Red Sox would receive additional draft picks at the end of the first round in June if they sign elsewhere. Cherington said the Red Sox continue to talk with the three along with free-agent catcher Jarrod Saltalamacchia. “Theres real interest, but nothing more than that,” Cherington said. For Cherington and his staff, the 2013 title is an accomplishment to savour, but its also in the past already. With Steward working his corner for the first time, the Longueuil, Que., fighter used his devastating left hand to put Jesus Gonzales down and out only 1:39 into their scheduled 12-round International Boxing Federation super-middleweight elimination bout on Saturday night. Steward, who knows punching power from having taken Thomas Hearns to a world title in the 1980s, liked what he saw. “Adonis Stevenson is one of the best pure punchers I have ever met in my life,” said Steward, who has trained or managed 43 world champions including Canadian Lennox Lewis. "Hes unbelievable. “Nothing sells like knockouts. This is one of the best knockouts I have see in my 60 years in boxing.” With the win, Stevenson (16-1) takes over the IBFs No. 2 ranking, moving him a step closer to his goal of challenging Lucian Bute of Montreal for the world title. Gonzales (27-2) suffered his first defeat since 2005. The fighters felt each other out for what seemed only a moment before Stevenson attacked, moving in with his jab and sending Gonzales (27-2) to the floor with a crushing left to the jaw. When referee Marlon B. Wright counted out the senseless Gonzales, Stevenson leapt up and down in the ring while the crowd of 2,809 roared in the end of the Bell Centre cordoned off for the fight. Gonzales was taken to hospital for tests afterward and was not available for comment. “I threw the punch, bang, and thats it,” said Stevenson. The quick KO came after a week of verbal sparring between the two lefthanders. Gonzales supports a womens shelter in Phoenix, and he brought up Stevensons criminal record, which includes 18 months in jail starting in 1998 for his activities with a Montreal street gang. Stevenson was convicted of being a pimp, assault and making threats, but the father of two daughters has had no arrests since his release and says he has changed his life. “This wasnt about revenge,” the 34-year-old said. “Im not that kind of guy. Im just happy I won.” Now he wants Butes title. “Im ready to be a champion,” he said. “This is my year.” Butes promoter InterBox is in negotiations with No. 1 contender Carl Froch of England for a two-fight, home and away series. If that happens, promoter Yvon Michel said Stevenson will have to fight and beat the highest-ranked opponent available to become mandatory challenger for the world title. But whatever happens, Stevenson established his presence in the 168-pound division with a quick win over the best calibre of opponent he has faced. Gonzales was a top U.S. amateur, which included working with Steward in 2003, who has had a solid if unspectacular career mainly as a middleweight (160 pounds). Stevenson was all business as he stepped into the ring in his new Kronk gym trunks and white shoes. “I like the way Adonis came out,” said Steward. "He took control of the fight. "He wasnt just reacting to the other fighter. He sset the tempo.dddddddddddd I love that. With that type of attitude, his skills and that big punching power, hell be packing arenas here just like Bute. I told Adonis you look like a young Tommy Hearns. " Stevenson only made contact with Steward two months ago, but impressed the veteran trainer enough to start working together at Kronk in Detroit. Steward flew in from Austria, where he spent the past week with heavyweight Wladimir Klitschko, to be in Stevensons corner. He was to return to Austria on Sunday. The Hiatian-born Stevenson, previously considered a one-dimensional knockout artist with limited skill, said he worked on balance and technique in Detroit, but said the main benefit was getting plenty of sparring with world class partners like middleweight contender Andy Lee. New York matchmaker Don Majesky said what Steward brought most to his new protege was confidence. “He had the confidence to dominate the best opponent of his career,” said Majesky. "That was a statement fight. “He established himself as a contender, but also as an attraction, and thats just as important.” Stevenson wore a Montreal Expos cap into the ring, while Gonzales went a step father and wore an Expos shirt with Gary carters No. 8 on the back in honour of the former catcher who died this week of cancer at 57. The scheduled co-feature with impressive light heavyweight Eleider Alvarez (7-0) of Montreal was cancelled when his opponent, American Otis Griffin (23-9-2), pulled out. Promoter Yvon Michel said Griffin demanded a raise of his agreed upon $11,500 purse and was turned down. There were some boos from the seats from fans who felt lightweight Arash Usmanee (17-0) was given a home town decision in his wide open brawl with Innocent Anyanwu (21-4-1) of the Netherlands. Anyanwu floored Usmanee with an uppercut in the fifth round of the eight-round lightweight bout and looked to land more power punches in the match. But it was scored 76-75, 77-74 and 78-73 by the ringside judges for Usmanee, an Afghanistan native from Red Deer, Alta., now living in Montreal. It was the first time in his pro career Usmanee was knocked down. It was followed by a pair of mismatches. Dierry Jean (21-0) of Longueuil knocked down timid-looking Ryan Barrett (25-10-3) of England five times before the scheduled eight round bout was mercifully stopped by the referee. And heavyweight Oscar Rivas (9-0), a Colombian fighting out of Montreal, had pudgy Ivica Perkovic (15-13) of Croatia down twice in the second and finished him with a left to the jaw in the third of their scheduled eight-rounder. Tyler Asselstine (9-0) of Ottawa won all eight rounds of his super-featherweight bout to hand lanky Nicola Cipolletta (8-1) of Italy his first defeat. Wearing a Toronto Maple Leafs jersey into the ring was no help for Jeremy Abbott (3-3) of Dunnville, Ont., who was stopped after going down three times in the first round against Ghislain Maduma (6-0) of Montreal. Lightweight Baha Laham (8-0) of Montreal stopped Csaba Toth (6-12) of Hungary with a body shot in the third round of a four-rounder. SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. — Colorado Rockies starting pitcher Jhoulys Chacin will be sidelined at least another week with a sore throwing shoulder. The Rockies learned the results of Chacins MRI on Tuesday morning. The team announced he has right shoulder inflammation, but no structural damage. Chacin was Colorados top right-handed starter in 2013, going 14-10 with a 3.47 ERA. But he was limited since the start of spring training and had yet to throw off the mound before he was shut down on Sunday. Chacin said Tuesday that his shoulder was feeling better, but the injury could prevent him from being ready for the start of the regular season. All three sides finished with seven points apiece in Pool E to move on to the final eight while the Philippines was last with only three points. PASADENA, Calif. — Oregons incredible offence busted up Wisconsin and the record books on the way to the Ducks first Rose Bowl victory in 95 years. Darron Thomas passed for three touchdowns, DeAnthony Thomas scored on runs of 91 and 64 yards, and the No. 6 Ducks earned their first bowl victory under coach Chip Kelly, holding off Wisconsin 45-38 Monday night in the highest-scoring Rose Bowl ever played. And it wasnt over until a video review confirmed the Badgers (11-3) ran out of time at the Oregon 25, out of timeouts and unable to spike the ball in time to stop the clock for a last-gasp fling. Lavasier Tuinei caught eight passes for 158 yards and two TDs for the Ducks (12-2), who had no post-season success to show for Kellys otherwise wildly successful three-year tenure until this landmark offensive performance in the 98th Rose Bowl. Oregon hadnt won the West Coasts biggest game since 1917. “Its been 95 years since you could say: Oregon Ducks, Rose Bowl champions,” Kelly said after the Ducks held Wisconsin scoreless in the fourth quarter. The Granddaddy of Them All had never seen this many points, beating the record 80 scored by Washington and Iowa in 1991. With the Ducks wearing mirrored helmets and playing at their usual frantic pace, Oregon racked up 621 total yards, just shy of the Rose Bowl record. Montee Ball rushed for 122 of his 164 yards in the first half for the Badgers (11-3), who lost the Rose Bowl for the second straight year despite managing 508 yards of their own. Ball tied Barry Sanders FBS record with his 39th touchdown of the season, while Russell Wilson passed for 296 yards and two scores. “This team showed what Oregon football is all about,” said linebacker Kiko Alonso, named the games top defensive player after getting a key interception. Wisconsin had two drives to tie it after Oregon kicked a field goal with 6:50 to play, but Jared Abbrederis fumbled near the Oregon sideline after making a long catch. The ball plopped onto the turf without even bouncing, and Oregons Michael Clay jumped on it with 4:06 left. That video review went the Ducks way, too. The Badgers had burned two timeouts early in the second half, so Oregon was able to run the clock down to 23 seconds before punting. Wilson connected on two long passes, but the officials went to video review after the clock went to zeros as Wilson rushed his team to the Oregon 25 with two seconds left, waited for the ball to be set, then took the snap and spiked the ball. But the Badgers took too long. The officials ruled time had indeed expired, and the Ducks sprinted onto the field to the frenzied cheers of their outnumbered fans. The Ducks and Badgers produced the highest-scoring first quarter (14-14) and first half (28-28) in Rose Bowl history, eventually surpassing the 80 scored in Washingtons 46-34 win over Iowa in 1991. Oregons yardage fell just short of USCs 633 yards against Illinois in 2008. Sure, Baylors 67-56 win over Washington in the Alamo Bowl last Thursday might have packed bigger sheer numbers. But Wisconsin and Oregon commanded a much bigger stage — and the Ducks unleashed every bit of their formidable offensive power. Tuinei was named the Ducks offensive player of the game, but their flashiest star in those futuristic helmets was DeAnthony Thomas, the freshman from Los Angeles who showed off his electrifying athleticism on the longest scoring run in Rosee Bowl history in the second quarter, going 91 yards up the middle.dddddddddddd He added a mere 64-yard scoring run in the opening minute of the second half as Oregon won the matchup of the last two losers of the Rose Bowl. Wisconsin lost 21-19 to TCU last season, and the Ducks lost to Ohio State two years ago before losing the BCS title game last year. “It almost felt like there was some sort of magical force keeping us from getting it done in bowl games,” Oregon guard Carson York said. “Glad we did it today.” LaMichael James rushed for 159 yards and an early TD in his likely college finale for the Ducks, while DeAnthony Thomas finished with 155 yards. Kenjon Barner also caught a TD pass from Darron Thomas. Abbrederis and Nick Toon caught TD passes for Wisconsin, and defensive end Louis Nzegwu returned a fumble 33 yards for a score in the second quarter. In the second half, the Ducks even slowed Ball. The Heisman Trophy finalist started strong in whats likely his final college game, even hurdling Oregon safety John Boyett in whats sure to be a big YouTube hit, but he had just three carries for no yards in the fourth quarter. Both teams won their respective conferences first-ever league title games to earn this trip to Pasadena. Although the Ducks drought was generations longer, Wisconsin hasnt won in Pasadena since Jan. 1, 2000, when Ron Dayne led the Badgers to back-to-back Rose Bowl titles. Oregon quickly debunked the theory that teams with extra time to prepare for the Ducks inventive offence have a better chance to stop it. The Ducks were 1-4 in bowl games and season openers under Kelly until they carved up Wisconsin with the second-biggest yardage performance in Rose Bowl history. Wisconsin set the tone from its opening drive, going 77 yards in seven plays for Abbrederis wide-open 38-yard TD catch just 3:12 in. Ball carried on the Badgers first four snaps, and play-action set up the pass — two themes that dominated Wisconsins game plan. Oregon answered with an 80-yard drive in just 2:07, culminating in James one-yard TD run. Wisconsin scored again on Wilsons four-yard run before the teams finally traded punts, but DeAnthony Thomas broke through the Wisconsin line and sprinted down the Oregon sideline for a 91-yard score, surpassing Tyrone Wheatleys bowl-record 88-yard run in 1993 and capping the second-longest scoring drive in Rose Bowl history at 95 yards with Oregons longest run all season. Wisconsin opened the second quarter with Balls record-tying run, but Darron Thomas found Barner open down the seam for a 54-yard score on Oregons next play. Both defences then got a brief chance to shine: The Ducks stopped Wisconsin on fourth down inside the Oregon 20, but blitzing Wisconsin linebacker Mike Taylor forced Darron Thomas fumble moments later, and Nzegwu scooped and scored. Oregon calmly answered with Tuineis three-yard TD catch with 30 seconds left. The teams 56 combined points surpasses the record 45 scored by Wisconsin and UCLA in 1999. DeAnthony Thomas 64-yard TD run put Oregon ahead, and the Ducks then held Wisconsin to a mere field goal — but the Badgers defence forced a punt, and Wilson made several heady plays on the way to an 18-yard TD pass to Toon. The quarterbacks traded interceptions. Then Darron Thomas found Tuinei for his second score just 25 seconds into the fourth quarter, putting the Ducks ahead to stay. WINNIPEG — Blake Wheeler says his Winnipeg Jets are racing for a Western Conference playoff spot. Winnipeg got out of the post-Olympic starting blocks quickly with a 3-2 shootout win over the Phoenix Coyotes on Thursday night as Wheeler scored his 23rd goal of the season. “A vast percentage of the league is going to be pretty rested after a 2 1/2-week break,” said Wheeler, who played for the United States in Sochi, but saw limited minutes as the Americans 13th forward. “I think its an all-out sprint. Theres no time to be tired.” Wheeler was joined on the score sheet by Bryan Little. Olli Jokinen put away the shootout winner in the fourth round for Winnipeg (29-26-6). Devin Setoguchi also beat Coyotes goalie Mike Smith in the shootout, while Antoine Vermette was the only Coyote to solve Ondrej Pavelec. Oliver Ekman-Larsson and Martin Hanzal scored in regulation for Phoenix (27-21-11) in the first game for both teams after a 19-day break for the Winter Olympics. The Jets continued their winning ways under new head coach Paul Maurice, improving to 10-3-1 since he replaced the fired Claude Noel. Despite some less-than-crisp play, the coach said he was pleasantly surprised by how well his team played after such a long layoff. “It was tough at times, but just from the stuff I watched the last two days (around the league), it was a better game than I thought I was going to see,” Maurice said. Winnipeg pulled within one point of the Coyotes as both teams chase a wild-card playoff spot, although Phoenix has two games in hand. Dallas sits in the final spot with 66 points, one better than Phoenix and Vancouver, and two ahead of Winnipeg. Pavelec made 34 saves for the Jets, with two of his toughest stops coming in overtime. “It wasnt an easy game for both teams. It was the first game back and we didnt know what to expect a little bit,” said Pavelec, who stopped Mike Ribeiro to end the shootout. Smith stopped 27 shots for the visitors, including a pair of scoring chances in the final seconds of regulation. “For the most part I felt not too bad,” said Smith, who was a member of Canadas gold medal-winning team in Sochi but didnt see any playing time. “But like I said, it doesnt matter how you feel, you need to come out on the better side of things.” Hanzal put away a rebound to tie the game at 2-2 with Jets centre Jim Slater in the penalty box 6:40 into the third period. Winnipeg took advantage of a giveaway by Coyotes defenceman Zbynek Michalek to take the lead late in the second period. With Ekman-Larsson in the penalty box, Little intercepted Michaleks pass in the low slot and beat Smiths glove hand to make it 2-1. The teams wasted no time reminding fans of one of the differences between international hockey and the NHL game. Winnipegs Zach Bogosian and Phoenixs Rob Klinkhammer dropped the gloves just 78 seconds into the game after Klinkhammer shoved Bogosians defence partner Toby Enstrom into the boards. The Coyotes opened the scoring with an Ekman-Larsson wrist shot from the high slot that went in off the post 12:17 into the first period. It took the Jets less than three minutes to respond, as Wheelers shot from the corner hit Coyotes defenceman Michael Stone in the leg and bounced into the net. Smith was distracted earlier in the sequence by Winnipeg forward Dustin Byfuglien, and the Coyotes argued for an interference call. Smith and Coyotes coach Dave Tippett both said they disagreed with the non-call in their post-game comments. “Personally, I think if theres incidental contact in the net and then the puck goes in after, it shouldve been not a penalty, but it shouldnt have been allowed,” Smith said. Notes: Jocelyne Larocque of Ste. Anne, Man., a defenceman for Canadas Olympic gold medal-winning womens hockey team, performed the ceremonial puck drop. a The Jets welcomed back Slater, who missed 52 games with a sports hernia, and left-winger Evander Kane, who sat out the last six games before the Olympic break with a hand injury. a The Jets head to Nashville for a one-game road trip on Saturday, while the Coyotes play in Denver Friday night before heading home. a The teams have one remaining meeting, April 1 in Arizona. A day after Commissioner Adam Silver repeated his desire to force Sterling to sell quickly, the committee met via conference call. League spokesman Mike Bass said owners reviewed the status of the charge for termination of the Clippers ownership. Silver or an owner has to formally charge Sterling in writing with violating Article 13 of the NBAs constitution. A hearing would then be held and require a three-fourths vote of the board of governors to force Sterling to sell the team he has owned since 1981. Sterling criticized Magic Johnson in the interview that aired Monday, his first public comments since Silver banned him for life and fined him $2.5 million for making racist commments.dddddddddddd Silver apologized to Johnson in a statement, adding that owners were working “as expeditiously as possible” on the process for removal. Bass said the committee also discussed the media appearance of Shelly Sterling, who said she wants to keep her share of the franchise even if her estranged husband is forced to give up his. The NBA has said that wouldnt be possible. The 10-member committee was also briefed on the hiring of Dick Parsons as the Clippers interim CEO, and his meeting with team employees Monday. Minnesota owner Glen Taylor chairs the committee that includes Miamis Micky Arison, the Lakers Jeanie Buss, Oklahoma Citys Clay Bennett, New Yorks James Dolan, Bostons Wyc Grousbeck, San Antonios Peter Holt, Phoenixs Robert Sarver, Indianas Herb Simon and Torontos Larry Tanenbaum. As head coach of Canadas junior mens national team, Roy Rana has worked with the countrys brightest talent, and having coached the likes of Tristan Thompson and Andrew Wiggins among others, knows what separates the good from the elite. Coincidentally, it only took two summers for Tyler Ennis to prove he could make the jump, during which, Rana witnessed a maturation in the Brampton, Ont. native, that makes his standout play leading the undefeated Syracuse Orange (18-0) a logical progression rather than a surprise. During the 2012 FIBA Americas Under-18 Championship, the 6-foot-2 point guard endured an arduous tournament, struggling in pressure situations. Matchups and defensive schemes posed challenges for Ennis as the Canadian squad had a strong showing, but lost to the host Brazilians 66-62 in the semifinal round. As a result, Rana and his staff talked with Ennis extensively regarding his leadership and need to carry the team. Ennis took the direction and loss to heart and came back a reinvented player the following summer at the FIBA Under-19 World Championship. “It was amazing to see his transformation within that year,” Rana said. “Just how much more confident he was in himself, how much more assertive, how much more of a leader he was. He really started to understand the subtleties of how to impact his teammates.” This time around Ennis was also asked to shoulder Canadas scoring load, something he did effortlessly. Ennis averaged a tournament leading 20.9 points, outscoring projected 2014 NBA lottery picks Marcus Smart, Dante Exum, Dario Saric and Aaron Gordon. By riding that performance into his freshman season at Syracuse he has been a steadying force, toning down his scoring to facilitate the team offence, but also making key baskets when needed. Ennis averages 11.9 points per game and shoots 40 percent from the three-point line and leads the Orange with 5.5 assists and 2.7 steals per (the latter, good for ninth in the nation). His numbers and Syracuses record make a very strong case that Ennis is the best point guard in college basketball right now – regardless of class. Despite his solid stats he maintains the individual numbers and accolades arent his ambition. “I dont really have any personal goals,” Ennis said. “I just want us to win the ACC and I know its close to impossible to go undefeated in a college season, but to just get better as a team and lose the least amount of games.” Syracuse has yet to lose and Ennis wont concede a loss to anyone, not even his own family. His older brother Dylan, a sophomore guard for the number four ranked Villanova Wildcats squared off against his younger sibling when both teams met in late December. Tyler was all business in that game scoring 20 points in a 78-62 Syracuse win, but still values the advice his brother gave him on preparing for his first year at the collegiate level. “He always told me to get in the gym by myself and work on my own stuff,” Ennis said. “Just get in the gym as much as possible, while taking care of your body.” Ennis wasnt overlooked coming into the season, but not even the most optimistic experts pegged him as a one-and-done NBA prospect. Ennis had other plans however. “Thats pretty much what I worked for,” he confidently said. “Not to be one, but to just have the opportunity to get to the professional level. Not to leave, but just to have the opportunity.” Still, he hasnt given leaving after his first year any consideration and is only focused on winning games for Syracuse. But ?talent evaluators are starting to take notice that his play to date says first round pick far more than it says first-year student-athlete. “Absolutely, I think hes a one-and-done guy,” Rana said. “Its his choice, does he want to come back for a second year of college, or does he want to go to the NBA? If Im a GM and Im drafting, hes certainly a guy I would be going after pretty hard. Hes going to be a fantastic pro, a great NBA player and whatever organization he goes to, theyre going to be a better organization because of it.” Regardless of his future, Ennis is focused on the madness of March. His maturity, ability to score, pass and affect the game in a myriad of ways is no longer a surprise to anyone. The summer ahead could prove to be even more promising than the last, particularly if he chooses to forego his college eligibility for the NBA Draft, making another jump, this time to the highest level. . The Richmond, B.C., native added eight rebounds and was named the tournaments most valuable player as the top-seeded Ravens defended their 2011 championship. “The biggest thing is to win the whole thing as a team,” said Scrubb. Moskalski, a fourth-year physical education and recreation student from Edmonton, collected four points in two games as the Pandas kicked off conference play with a pair of road wins over Canada West champion Manitoba.PHILADELPHIA – Winnipeg Jets general manager Kevin Cheveldayoff wasnt looking for one specific way to improve his team at the 2014 NHL draft. Instead, he focused on acquiring depth, of both players and picks, casting a wide net over the two days in Philadelphia. “We had a smattering of everything,” said Cheveldayoff. “We got some high skill in the first round, we got a big two-way defenceman early today, and we picked up some more skill, some grit on the wing and then we got some big centremen at the end as well.” The Jets made two trades as well, sending the 159th pick and the rights to goalie Eddie Pasquale to the Washington Capitals for the 164th and 192nd picks in this years draft and a seventh-round pick in 2015. The Jets also acquired Ottawas sixth-round pick in 2015 for their 189th pick this year. “We came in with seven picks, and we ended up picking seven players,” said Cheveldayoff. "We stockpiled some picks for next years draft, and we did come in saying that if we felt we were going to get our players later in the draft that we could get to see if we could move down. “We ended up acquiring an extra pick when we moved the rights to Eddie Pasquale, so we had some picks that if we could find a way to move into next year to have those assets moving forward, that was something we were looking forward to.” The Jets took Jack Glover from the United States under-18 team with the 69th overall pick, their highest pick on the second day of the draft. “Hes got good size, he moves very well, and hes a good two-way defenceman,” said Cheveldayoff. “Getting him in the third round is something we were very excited about, becausee where we had him on our list was not in that realm.dddddddddddd When he was available we actually looked at trying to package something to move up into the later parts of the second round, but we couldnt find a match, so we were happy to get a player that we liked.” “I like to push the pace,” said the six-foot-three, 190-pound Glover, “and to get the puck to the forwards. I definitely think that Im a guy that relies on my skating and my vision, and I think those are my two biggest assets. Im not a big hitter, Im not a big bruiser, but I take great pride in my defensive game.” With their fourth-round picks, the Jets took two players from the WHL: centre Chase De Leo from Portland and defenceman Nelson Nogier from Saskatoon. The team used its lone fifth-round pick on left wing Clinston Franklin of the USHL, and wrapped its activity in the sixth and seventh rounds with centre Pavel Kraskovsky from the Russia-Jr. team and centre/left wing Matt Ustaski from the BCHL. De Leo will join his childhood best friend and WHL rival, goalie Eric Comrie, as a Jets prospect. Comrie is the half-brother of NHL players Mike and Paul Comrie. “When we were 10 years old we had a piece of paper and we both signed it, saying that we were going to be teammates in the NHL one day,” said De Leo. “Its pretty special and very exciting.” Cheveldayoff likes the familiarity between the two prospects. “Its great to see the players in our organization have a bond already even before they get to development camp or training camp,” said Cheveldayoff. “We are trying to build one family here, and its great to have a head start on it.” cheap nfl jerseys cheap jerseys ’ ’ ’

SAN DIEGO — Tony Gwynn could handle a bat like few other major leaguers, whether it was driving the ball through the “5.5 hole” between third base and shortstop or hitting a home run off the facade in Yankee Stadium in the World Series. He was a craftsman at the plate, whose sweet left-handed swing made him one of baseballs greatest hitters. Gwynn loved San Diego. San Diego loved “Mr. Padre” right back. Gwynn, a Hall of Famer and one of the greatest athletes in San Diegos history, died Monday of oral cancer, a disease he attributed to years of chewing tobacco. He was 54. “Our city is a little darker today without him but immeasurably better because of him,” Mayor Kevin Faulconer said in a statement. In a rarity in pro sports, Gwynn played his whole career with the Padres, choosing to stay in the city where he was a two-sport star in college, rather than leaving for bigger paychecks elsewhere. His terrific hand-eye co-ordination made him one of the games greatest pure hitters. He had 3,141 hits — 18th on the all-time list — a career .338 average and won eight batting titles to tie Honus Wagners NL record. He struck out only 434 times in 9,288 career at-bats. He played in San Diegos only two World Series — batting a combined .371 — and was a 15-time All-Star. He had a memorable home run in Game 1 of the 1998 World Series off fellow San Diegan David Wells, and scored the winning run in the 1994 All-Star Game despite a bum knee. Gwynn never hit below .309 in a full season. He spread out his batting titles from 1984, when he batted .351, to 1997, when he hit .372. Gwynn was hitting .394 when a players strike ended the 1994 season, denying him a shot at becoming the first player to hit .400 since San Diego native Ted Williams hit .406 in 1941. Gwynn befriended Williams and the two loved to talk about hitting. Gwynn steadied Williams when he threw out the ceremonial first pitch before the 1999 All-Star Game at Bostons Fenway Park. Fellow Hall of Famer Greg Maddux tweeted, “Tony Gwynn was the best pure hitter I ever faced! Condolences to his family.” Gwynn was known for his hearty laugh and warm personality. Every day at 4 p.m., Gwynn sat in the Padres dugout and talked baseball or anything else with the media. Tim Flannery, who was teammates with Gwynn on the Padres 1984 World Series team and later was on San Diegos coaching staff, said hell “remember the cackle to his laugh. He was always laughing, always talking, always happy.” “The baseball world is going to miss one of the greats, and the world itself is going to miss one of the great men of mankind,” said Flannery, the San Francisco Giants third base coach. “He cared so much for other people. He had a work ethic unlike anybody else, and had a childlike demeanour of playing the game just because he loved it so much.” Gwynn had been on a medical leave since late March from his job as baseball coach at San Diego State, his alma mater. He died at a hospital in suburban Poway, agent John Boggs said. “He was in a tough battle and the thing I can critique is hes definitely in a better place,” Boggs said. “He suffered a lot. He battled. Thats probably the best way I can describe his fight against this illness he had, and he was courageous until the end.” Gwynns wife, Alicia, and other family members were at his side when he died, Boggs said. Gwynns son, Tony Jr., was with the Philadelphia Phillies, who later placed him on the bereavement list. “Today I lost my Dad, my best friend and my mentor,” Gwynn Jr. tweeted. “Im gonna miss u so much pops. Im gonna do everything in my power to continue to … Make u proud!” Gwynn had two operations for cancer in his right cheek between August 2010 and February 2012. The second surgery was complicated, with surgeons removing a facial nerve because it was intertwined with a tumour inside his right cheek. They grafted a nerve from Gwynns neck to help him eventually regain facial movement. Gwynn had been in and out of the hospital and had spent time in a rehab facility, Boggs said. “For more than 30 years, Tony Gwynn was a source of universal goodwill in the national pastime, and he will be deeply missed by the many people he touched,” Commissioner Bud Selig said. Fans paid their respects by visiting the statue of Gwynn on a grassy knoll just beyond the outfield at Petco Park. Gwynn was last with his San Diego State team on March 25 before beginning a leave of absence. His Aztecs rallied around a Gwynn bobblehead doll they would set near the bat rack during games, winning the Mountain West Conference tournament and advancing to the NCAA regionals. Last week, SDSU announced it was extending Gwynns contract one season. The Aztecs play at Tony Gwynn Stadium, which was built in the mid-1990s with a $4 million donation by then-Padres owner John Moores. Gwynn was born in Los Angeles on May 9, 1960, and attended high school in Long Beach. He was a two-sport star at San Diego State in the late 1970s and early 1980s, playing point guard for the basketball team — he still holds the game, season and career record for assists — and in the outfield on the baseball team. Gwynn always wanted to play in the NBA, until realizing during his final year at San Diego State that baseball would be the ticket to the pros. He was drafted by both the Padres (third round) and San Diego Clippers (10th round) on the same day in 1981. After spending parts of just two seasons in the minor leagues, he made his big league debut on July 19, 1982. Gwynn had two hits that night. After Gwynn hit a double, all-time hits leader Pete Rose, who been trailing the play, said to him: “Hey, kid, what are you trying to do, catch me in one night?” In a career full of highlights, Gwynn had his 3,000th hit on Aug. 9, 1999, a first-inning single to right field at Montreals Olympic Stadium. Gwynn retired after the 2001 season and became a volunteer assistant coach at SDSU in 2002. He took over as head coach after that season. He and Cal Ripken Jr. — who spent his entire career with the Baltimore Orioles — were inducted into the Hall of Fame in 2007. “I had no idea that all the things in my career were going to happen,” Gwynn said shortly before being inducted. “I sure didnt see it. I just know the good Lord blessed me with ability, blessed me with good eyesight and a good pair of hands, and then I worked at the rest.” Gwynn also is survived by a daughter, Anisha. Boggs said services were pending. wholesale jerseys . LUCIE, Fla. The squad is expected to be divided into 23 players with seven back-ups, although FIFA regulations require only a 30-man provisional squad to be named by May 13. TEMPE, Ariz. — Arizona quarterback Kevin Kolb had his right foot in a walking boot on Monday to protect a turf toe injury and said he had “no idea” whether he would be able to play in next Sundays home game against the St. Louis Rams. Kolb was injured early in Sundays 30-27 loss at Baltimore but stayed in the game and, in his words, “just triedd to gut it out.dddddddddddd” He was sacked a season-high six times in the Cardinals sixth consecutive loss. If Kolb cant go, second-year pro John Skelton probably would get the start. Skelton started four games late last season. With the Rams and Cardinals matching 1-6 records, Arizonas 58-game home sellout streak could be in jeopardy. PITTSBURGH — Penguins head coach Dan Bylsma was impressed by Kris Letang in his return after recovering from a stroke 10 weeks ago. Jussi Jokinen scored in regulation and then got the game-winner in the shootout, lifting Pittsburgh to a 4-3 victory over the playoff-bound Detroit Red Wings on Wednesday night. James Neal scored two power-play goals in regulation — his 25th and 26th of the season — for Pittsburgh, which got the 26-year-old Letang back for the first time since January. “Hes been out a long time and he looked pretty darn good out there defending against some good players,” Bylsma said. “He made a difference.” Tomas Jurco, Jakub Kindl and Riley Sheahan scored for the Red Wings, who are headed to the post-season for an NHL-leading 23rd straight time. Penguins goalie Marc-Andre Fleury had 34 saves through overtime and stopped all three attempts in the shootout, including a spinning acrobatic glove save on Daniel Alfredsson to preserve the win. “Players on the bench called it a (Dominik) Hasek-type save the way he put his glove out,” Bylsma said. “Im not sure Ive seen a more acrobatic save from (Fleury).” On the winning goal, Jonas Gustavsson poked the puck off Jokinens stick but it caromed high over the Detroit goalie and into the net. “He lost the puck and it started rolling so I was going to touch it,” Gustavsson said. “It took a funny bounce and lobbed over me. I guess it was a lucky break for them.” With the scored tied 2-2, Letang — who missed 26 games — set up the go-ahead goal with 10:43 remaining in the third, his shot squeezing through Gustavsson before Jokinen found the loose puck to put Pittsburgh in front. It was Jokinens 19th goal of the season. “I had a lot of fun,” Letang said. “It wasnt perfect for me, but I was just happy to be on the ice. Obviously its something I missed a lot.” Sheahan forced overtime and put the Red Wings in the playoffs when he scored his seventh of the year with 1:15 left in regulation. “It was a pretty good feeling to get that point and give us a chance in the playoffs,” Sheahan said. Detroit, like Pittsburgh, has endured injuries throughout the season, as the Red Wings are still without captain Henrik Zetterberg, who is recovering from back surgery. Top-pairing defenceman Jonathan Ericsson (finger), Daniel Cleary (knee) and Mikael Samuelsson (shoulder) also remain out. “Everyone gets injuries,” Red Wings coach Mike Babcock said. “You just cant get injuries to too many of the wrong people. The rest of these guys have stepped up.” Zetterberg, who could begin skating next week, likely wont be ready for the first game of the post-season, though he could return at some point during the first round. That first-round matchup could come against the Penguins, a potential meeting that would pair the teams together for the third time since 2008, the first of back-to-back appearances in the Stanley Cup finals for both clubs. Pittsburgh, locked into the Eastern Conferences No. 2 seed, welcomed several stars back to the lineup, including captain Sidney Crosby, Chris Kunitz, Brooks Orpik, and Olli Maatta, who all missed Sundays shootout win at Colorado. The most significant return came on the blue line. Letang hadnt played since Jan. 27, two days before suffering a frightening stroke that threatened his 2013 season. Doctors have not pinpointed the cause of the stroke, but tests revealed a small hole in his heart, which hasnt been repaired and may have played a factor. Letang has been taken off blood-thinner medication, but his condition will be monitored. Pittsburgh general manager Ray Shero and Letang said they are confident the 2013 Norris Trophy finalist is not putting himself at greater risk by playing. Letang, welcomed back to the lineup with a loud ovation from the sellout crowd, was cleared by doctors several weeks ago and convinced Shero he was OK during a series of conversations while travelling with the team on a road trip last week. He looked well on his way back to form Wednesday. “There are some things I felt good about, some things I have to get my timing back,” Letang said. “Hockey is about timing and, I dont know, maybe its going to take a week, maybe its going to take two weeks.” NOTES: The Penguins are 49-18-2 in 69 games played the past two seasons with Letang in the lineup and 33-8-1 when he records a point. … Pittsburgh recorded its 100th regular-season win at home, its 51st win equaling the second-highest total in team history. … The crowd was encouraged to sing along to the National Anthem in support of stabbing victims at nearby Franklin Regional High School. Stairs, who holds the major-league record with 23 pinch-hit home runs, was a disappointment for the Nationals. The 43-year-old batted just .154 with two RBIs in 56 games. He was 6 for 39 as a pinch hitter. LOUISVILLE, Ky. — Most satisfying to Russ Smith about No. 6 Louisvilles victory over Western Kentucky was his teammates assistance in overcoming the absence of starting point guard Chris Jones. Just as important was the timing of those contributions that put away the Hilltoppers. Smith had 14 points and 10 assists and Louisville shot 69 per cent from the field in the second half to pull away to a 79-63 victory on Saturday. With Jones sidelined at least a game with a sprained right wrist, the Cardinals (9-1) got numerous backcourt contributions to beat their in-state rival for the fifth straight time. Smith, Louisvilles leading scorer who has tried to involve teammates more this season, set the tone in both areas with five assists and nine points in the second half to finish with his second double-double in three games. Louisvilles bench outscored WKUs 33-20. “My job is just to perform on a daily basis and get my teammates involved,” Smith said. “If shots arent falling, I have to find my teammates, play some great defence and help Louisville win some games.” Freshman Terry Rozier grabbed a team-high 10 rebounds starting in Jones place while little-used senior reserve Tim Henderson — whose consecutive 3-pointers helped Louisville rally past Wichita State in last springs national semifinal — added career highs of 12 points on four 3-pointers and four assists in 22 minutes. “Im kind of used to that role, Ive had it for four years now,” the walk-on said. "We have such a great group of people, a great group of guards who can all play well. “Its whatever Coach (Rick Pitino) feels like is going to work that game and how you match up with them. I guess he felt like I matched up well with this team and with Chris out.” Their efforts helped Louisville pad a 31-28 halftime lead as the Cardinals made 13 of their first 21 attempts from the field after the break to build a 63-44 lead with 6:02 left. They shot 18 of 26 in the second half. Louisville held the Hilltoppers (5-4) scoreless for nearly 6 minutes. Mangok Mathiang added a career-high 13 points and Chane Behanan had 11 points and seven rebounds for Louisville, which shot 30 of 59 overall (51 per cent) after hitting just 36 per cent in the first half.dddddddddddd Wayne Blackshear added 12 points while senior forward Stephan Van Treese had five points with four rebounds, providing a presence for the Cardinals with Mathiang hampered by three fouls. Pitino praised Smith, his senior tri-captain, for being the catalyst. “Until you knock the young man off of his throne, hes the premier player in college basketball,” Pitino said. "(Its a) biased opinion by me, but I think he is because he has made every change. “Two years ago, I needed him to carry the team on his back, he did. Now, I need him to pass the basketball and take good shots, he does.” T.J. Prices 22 points led WKU, which shot just 36 per cent and was outscored 36-14 inside. Brandon Harris, coming off a career-high 30-point game at Southern Illinois, finished with four points. Louisville improved to 38-39 all-time against WKU in a series that both coaches want to continue even though its programs are headed to new leagues next season. The Cardinals will leave the American Athletic Conference to join the Atlantic Coast Conference while the Hilltoppers will move from the Sun Belt to Conference USA. The Cardinals collective effort beat back a Western Kentucky team that came in a little deeper after transfers Trency Jackson and Chris Harrison-Docks became eligible on Friday. WKU coach Ray Harper promised to play both extensively and even started Jackson at guard in a strong lineup featuring leading scorer Price (15.6 points) and George Fant (13.9). Harrison-Docks finished with 10 points and Jackson had six. Star players were mostly secondary in a tight first half featuring four ties and eight lead changes before Louisville rallied twice from four-point deficits for its narrow edge at the break. Blackshear scored the Cardinals final eight points of the half including consecutive 3-pointers. Louisville opened the second half with a 14-5 run for a 45-33 lead that eventually reached 21. “I thought the first half we did good job of keeping the pace a little slower,” Harper said. “Second half, I thought they dictated pace, got out and got some easy baskets.” cheap nfl jerseys cheap jerseys ’ ’ ’

NEW YORK — Plagued by foul trouble in the first three quarters, Paul Pierce came up big down the stretch for the Brooklyn Nets. Deron Williams and Shaun Livingston each scored 18 points and an ailing Pierce hit a key late 3-pointer to lead the Brooklyn Nets to a 101-97 victory over the Atlantic Division-leading Toronto Raptors on Monday night. Pierce scored 10 of his 15 points in the fourth quarter and Joe Johnson added 14 for the Nets, who won their season-high eighth straight at home. Brooklyn moved three games behind Toronto in the Atlantic. The 35-year-old, who had been battling through a “stinger” in his right shoulder felt fine during the morning after receiving treatment and admitted that he wasnt expecting to play but he couldnt pass up on the opportunity Brooklyn had to close the gap in the division standings. “I knew the implications of this game. Maybe if it was a different type of game, (I sit out),” Pierce said. “But this was one of our biggest games of the year. Division rival, a lot on the line tonight, so you can always pen me in with those type of games.” Pierce was all over the floor in the final 12 minutes of the game, hitting a pair of shots beyond the arc, making four free throws and stealing the ball twice. The victory was critical for the Nets, who lost to Toronto last time they played, on Jan. 27, after Williams turned the ball over on an inbounds play with 12 seconds left and Patrick Patterson hit the eventual game-winner with 6 seconds left on the clock. “This was a big game. It give us the split,” Williams said. “We didnt want them to get three up on us in case of tiebreakers. We gained a full game on them. That much closer to catching them.” The Nets next big test comes on the road as they go for a season-series sweep over the two-time defending world champion Miami Heat on Wednesday night. Kyle Lowry scored 21 points to lead Toronto, which had won three straight and nine of its previous 11. Tyler Hansbrough and Amir Johnson added 16 points each. The Nets played their sixth straight game without Kevin Garnett, who was in the starting lineup but was scratched minutes before tip-off. Nets coach Jason Kidd said the 38-year-old veteran, who has been bother by back spasms, “tightened up, so we pulled the plug on him”. Brooklyn also missed Andrei Kirilenko, who was out because of a sprained right ankle. The Nets trailed 94-92 after Lowry split the defence in the lane for a lay-up with 2:15 left. Brooklyn then answered with five straight points as Andray Blatches reverse lay-up tied the score at 94 and Pierce followed with his 3 with 1:14 left despite Lowrys attempt to block the shot. Brooklyns small lineup gave the Raptors trouble. “Their lineup is funky, man. When you have Paul Pierce at the 4, it is tough to guard,” Lowry said. “Amir is an unbelievable defender but he is also our help guy and sometimes it is tough for him to get back out. I mean, Paul made a 3 over me and I was literally on him, in which I could smack him in the face.” DeMar DeRozan then beat Livingston to the basket but was fouled and made two free throws to pull to 97-96 with 1:03 to go. On Brooklyns next possession, Williams drove to the lane but his shot was blocked by Johnson, setting the stage for a go-ahead or game-tying shot. However, Terrence Ross lost control of the ball and Pierce came up with the steal. Livingston hit two free throws to extend the Nets lead to 99-96 with 22.8 seconds left. Lowry had a chance to tie with a 3 but missed. Blatche was then fouled with 6.5 seconds left and was only able to hit the second free throws to push the lead to four points. As the Raptors proceeded to move the ball up the court, Lowry was fouled. He hit the first shot to make it 100-97 with 5.2 left. He purposely missed the second one but was called for a lane violation. Pierce, who exited Sunday nights game in the first quarter with 10:45 left due to a sore right shoulder, then hit two free throws to seal the win and even the season series between both teams at two games apiece. The matchup between Toronto and Brooklyn, who are in third and sixth place, respectively, in the Eastern Conference, had a playoff atmosphere to it with the home crowd at the Barclays Center on its feet once Pierce hit that 3-pointer. In the long run, it would definitely help Raptors coach Dwane Caseys inexperienced post-season squad. “Again, it was playoff type of basketball with physicality. Ive said it forever that we have to get ready to play that style of basketball”, he said. “We had three big time turnovers because they got into us at the end of the game.” Brooklyn trailed 30-19 at the end of the opening period but had a strong second quarter, pulling to 51-50 at the half. Down 60-59 after a tip-in shot by Jonas Valaciunas in the third quarter, Johnson and Williams each hit two 3-pointers to spark Brooklyn on a 14-0 run, leading 73-60 with 4:28 left. But the Raptors answered with an 11-0 run over the next 3 minutes, capped by two free throws from Hansbrough. NOTES: Kidd said the Nets will re-evaluate Garnett on Tuesday. Rookie Mason Plumlee started in Garnetts place and had six points and eight rebounds in 26 minutes. Theyre 5-1 in Garnetts absence. . Brooklyn last won eight straight at Barclays Center back on Dec. 28, 2013 to Jan. 28, 2013. . The Nets 22-9 record since Jan. 1 is tops in the East. Neymar, David Luiz and Marcelo scored in the shootout, and Brazil goalkeeper Julio Cesar saved two penalties before watching Gonzalo Jaras final attempt hit the post. “My teammates are giving me a lot of strength on the field so I give my best,” Cesar said. “Were just three steps away and I hope to give another interview with Brazil partying.” Brazil, which extended its 39-year unbeaten streak in home competitive matches to 61, will next face either Colombia or Uruguay in the quarterfinals. Neither team managed to score at the Mineirao Stadium after first-half goals from Luiz and Sanchez, but Brazil came close to an early exit when Mauricio Pinillas shot hit the crossbar in the final moments of extra time. Chile also had the best chance in the second half, when Cesars spectacular save on Charles Aranguizs shot kept the score even. Brazil has reached the quarterfinals of each World Cup since Argentina eliminated it in the second round in 1990. Getting knocked out at that stage in its own World Cup would have been a disaster. But the Brazilians overcame their nerves in the shootout, with Neymar scoring the final penalty after Cesar stopped spot kicks from Pinilla and Sanchez. When Jara hit the post, some of Brazils players celebrated wildly while others fell to the ground, exhausted and emotionally drained. Willian, who missed a penalty for Brazil, sobbed uncontrollably, as Fred helped him to his feet. As the crowd roared, the Brazilian players joined hands in a human chain. The Chileans stood still, staring into the ground, wiping the sweat off their faces. “We tried to give everything, we tried to fight for a dream, and we didnt achieve it,” Chile midfielder Arturo Vidal said.dddddddddddd “But we gave all our effort on the pitch.” Calling it a “harsh” loss, Chile coach Jorge Sampaoli said he had been convinced his team would come out the winner. “Do you think I can be satisfied with the result?” Sampaoli said. “Weve played a hard 120 minutes even if everybody was against us in the stadium.” Brazil went ahead in the 18th minute after Thiago Silva deflected Neymars corner kick toward the far post. Luiz was given the goal but replays showed Chile defender Gonzalo Jara may have touched the ball before it went in. Brazil lost the lead when it failed to cope with Chiles aggressive pressure in a throw-in situation deep inside Brazils half of the field. Eduardo Vargas intercepted Hulks pass and found Sanchez on the right side of the area. The Barcelona striker scored easily with a shot toward the far post. Neymar, Fred and Dani Alves had chances in the first half while a second-half goal from Hulk was disallowed when referee Howard Webb ruled he handled the ball. Chile has never beaten Brazil in Brazil but was hoping for another upset after eliminating defending champion Spain in the group stage. “We played the toughest opponents in the tournament, Spain, Holland, Brazil, and we never played like a team that was weaker than anyone else,” said Chile goalkeeper Claudio Bravo, who blocked Hulks attempt in the shootout and watched Willians shot go wide. “The truth is that we are very sad because we could have won the match before, we should have taken advantage of some good chances,” Bravo said. “We felt we could win and we didnt.” cheap nfl jerseys cheap jerseys ’ ’ ’

HAMILTON, Ont. — Michael Bournival scored twice to lead the Hamilton Bulldogs to a 4-2 win over the Milwaukee Admirals in American Hockey League action on Friday. Greg Pateryn and Nick Tarnasky also scored for the Bulldogs (28-30-5). Dustin Tokarski made 28 saves. Michael Liambas and Taylor Beck had goals for the Admirals (29-21-12). Marek Mazanac stopped 22 shots in a losing effort. The Bulldogs enjoyed a dream start to Fridays game, snapping their 0-for-20 streak on the power play within the first five minutes. With Patrick Cehlin serving a minor penalty for hooking, Hamilton cycled the puck to the blue-line, where Nathan Beaulieu fired a high slap shot wide of the net. The puck took a hard bounce off the end boards and came to Bournival in the low slot, and he easily fired a wrist shot inside the near post at 5:23 of the first with Mazanac scrambling to regain position. The Bulldogs used another man advantage to double their lead at 8:05. Martin St. Pierre moved the puck to Pateryn at the right point, and the defenceman let go a rising wrist shot that moved through a screen and beat Mazanac over the far shoulder. The speed of Bournival paid dividends early in the second, as the winger drew a hook and was awarded a penalty shot at 8:09. He made the most of the opportunity, skating in quickly from the right wing and firing a low, heavy wrist shot that clipped Mazanacs far post on its way in. Milwaukee cut into its deficit through a well-worked passing play, as Mathieu Tousignant found Liambas with a centring pass from behind the goal line, and he snapped a one-time shot high and over the far shoulder of Tokarski at 12:02. But the Bulldogs struck back just over a minute later to restore their three-goal lead. After gathering a pass from Pateryn in the low slot, Tarnasky turned, fought off a defender and slid the puck through the legs of Mazanac at 13:46 of the second period. Two penalties at the same stoppage of play gave the Admirals a full two minutes to work with a 5-on-3 advantage, but they needed only seconds to score. Taylor Beck gathered the puck at the right wing and fired a hard wrist shot off Tokarskis near post and into the net at 14:53, seven seconds into the penalty. Hamilton was 2 for 7 on the power play, while Milwaukee was 1 for 6. . wholesale nfl jerseys . A year ago, as newly appointed general manager Masai Ujiri bided his time and sat out of a lacklustre 2013 draft, this scenario seemed highly improbable. The Raptors, like every other team in the association, had at least one eye on this years rookie crop, one of the most highly touted and eagerly anticipated ever to enter the league. The festive period is officially over. Back to work and back to reality for the masses. While most of us were obliging in the gluttony of the holiday season, the Barclays Premier League was in full swing. The festive season is the busiest time of the year and often times determines where things go from here. Some take a step forward. Others take a step back. Heres what you missed while you were eating, drinking and being merry: the winners and losers of the festive period. Winners Chelsea – Thorough. Calculated. Successful. The season has been an example of process for Jose Mourinho and Chelsea. Step by step, a steady build and team execution. The holiday season was a clinic for Chelsea. After conceding seven goals in three matches against Premier League lesser likes, Chelsea put on a defensive clinic over the last fortnight, shutting out Arsenal, Swansea City and Southampton. The Blues also picked up a win against tricky Liverpool, capping off a momentum-building period. Mourinhos side doesnt have the natural team goal-scoring prowess of Manchester City. But Mourinhos approach and the players implementation put Chelsea in prime position for a genuine title push. Through squad rotation and proper substitutions, Chelsea is a team on the rise. Emmanuel Adebayor – A managerial change and new tactics can do wonders. Adebayor was cast a misfit with his Spurs career predicted done and dusted under Andre Villas-Boas, but Tim Sherwood and a preferred 4-4-2 has given the Togolese opportunity to shine. Adebayor has rewarded his new manager with three goals in four games over the festive period, helping Spurs pick up 10 points out of a possible 12. Its an incredible turnaround for the 29-year-old, who had only one previous appearance on the league season. The movement has been top and so has the finishing. Four starts in four games, Adebayor returning to form gives goals to a Spurs team in desperate need. Tom Huddlestone – The feel good story of the holidays. The Hull City midfielder refused to get a haircut until he broke his scoring drought. The curly, afro-like mess had entered Marouane Fellaini territory. Two and a half years and 54 games since Huddlestone last scored, on his 27th birthday, the goal finally came. A 67th minute belter against Fulham ended the streak, allowing Huddlestone to chop off the hair he grew to despise. The haircut started on the field with a razor to the mop as part of the celebration. The notoriety of the hair and ensuing goal ended up raising thousands of dollars for Cancer Research UK. Huddlestone has revitalized his career with a standout campaign thus far. And now has a sharp, new do for good measure. Ole Gunnar Solskjaer – It was a bold move to take over a team owned by Vincent Tan. But the baby-faced tactician did just that and immediately impressed in his introductory press conference. He seems a man wise beyond his managerial years and was clearly ready for the move to the Premier League. His likeable demeanor and dedication to become a top manager suggest a long and prosperous career ahead. In like fashion to his playing days, Cardiff City played spoiler in his managerial debut, coming from behind with late dramatics to defeat Newcastle at St. Jamess Park in the FA Cup. Solskjaer provides the stability Cardiff needs. And Solskjaer will likewise take advantage of the opportunity in South Wales as a proving ground for future, more prestigious jobs. The decision to join Cardiff was a calculated one. In Solskjaer, we trust. Manchester City – No Sergio Aguero, no problem. City had to make the winners list as the only team with a perfect 12 points in four holiday matches. The only blemish, an FA Cup away draw at Blackburn. It wasnt whom they beat, but how they won over the holidays that was most impressive. Pulling away late with quality ball movement in a 4-2 win at Fulham, and coming from behind to beat Liverpool were matches destined for dropped points where three points were salvaged. Its a trademark of champions to win when not at your best. City is certainly looking very much the part. The next months schedule is tricky. But with the return of Aguero near and just one point back of league leaders Arsenal, City are the clear odds-on favourite for the title. Wojciech Szczesny – The Arsenal number one posted three clean sheets and conceded just one goal in four matches. Questions about goalkeeping stability have been the dominant narrative at the Emirates for years on end. Szczesnys standout season has silenced the calls for reinforcements. Ross Barkley – Barkley for England. A stunning match-winning free kick against Swansea to open the period was a testament to the 20-year olds special ability. Barkley has been a driving force all season, playing beyond his years. Everton picked up points in every game he started over the holidays, and the Englishman capped off the festivities with a goal and an assist in a 4-0 FA Cup thrashing of QPR. Gossip Pages – The January transfer window is open and the silly season is upon us. Proceed with caution with your transfer rumours du jour. Losers Manchester United – Three league wins to start the festive calendar and all seemed to be going in the right direction. 2014 however has started in disaster. A 2-1 home loss to Spurs ended any slim hope of title coontention and another embarrassment at Old Trafford to Swansea in the FA Cup showed how far the mighty have fallen.ddddddddddddnbsp; United have lost the fear factor, most surprisingly at home, with four league losses and just 12 goals in 10 matches. The short-term transition is a monumental struggle for David Moyes. You can see its taking its toll. The team has holes. Most disconcerting is the negative narrative and unclear directive of the manager, not leaving much room for goodwill or patience. Whether it be pessimism towards transfer window activity or a lack of confidence, Moyes continues to trip over his own words, making matters worse. And his actions arent much better, raising valid questions whether he is suitable to lead the club. And club officials saying United can financially cope with not qualifying for the Champions League misses the plot. Excuse mongering and flaky reassurances merely pander to stock market confidence rather than passionate supporters whose expectation is to win. Its unfortunate a transition within the squad came at the same time as a transition in manager. Perhaps Sir Alex Ferguson saw this coming. Regardless, from player acquisition to player performance to the manager, it all has to be better. Juan Mata – The two-time Chelsea player of the year has endured a frustrating time under Mourinho. Just 11 starts thus far and no league goals, the Spaniard let his emotions publicly boil over, showing dissent towards his manager after being substituted off against Southampton. Chelsea publicly says Mata is not for sale. Unfortunately for the player, he is being kept and under-utilized until Mourinho can get players he prefers at the club in the summer. Mata is not a Mourinho player and he will remain on the outside looking in. The less he plays, the more Matas World Cup chances are damaged. Theo Walcott – Having just returned from a long-term injury mid-December, Walcott has gone down again. Unbeknownst to the extent of his injury, Walcott mocked Spurs supporters being stretchered off in Arsenals 2-0 FA Cup win. 2-0 Walcott showed all to see with his fingers as he was carried off. More importantly, the true score as knee injury -1, Walcott – 0. All kidding aside, Walcott ruptured the ACL in his left knee and will miss the rest of the season and the World Cup. Its a more significant loss for Arsenal than England. The Gunners actually have a chance at silverware. Walcotts a versatile player for Arsene Wenger, scoring five goals and four assists in limited action this campaign. Fortunate for Wenger, he has quality options in the attacking midfield positions and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain is back training. Surely, Arsenal will need to add another attacking player with the ability to play with his back to goal before the end of the month. Sam Allardyce – The West Ham manager received the dreaded vote of confidence from club officials after an embarrassing 5-0 FA Cup loss to Nottingham Forest. In fairness, seven senior players were injured, Kevin Nolan suspended, and a Capital One Cup semi-final tilt lay ahead Wednesday against Manchester City. Allardyce played an inexperienced, ill-equipped team and they were punished. Regardless, the result, the festive period was awful for Allardyce with his team picking up a mere point in four matches, and his team now sitting 19th, very much in a relegation battle. With a lack of goal scoring and a leaky backline, the Hammers are in trouble and Allardyce is a top candidate to be the seventh managerial casualty of the season. Norwich City – The Canaries were almost as poor as West Ham, picking up just two points in four matches. Three games were against fellow relegation fodder Sunderland, Fulham and Crystal Palace. Those were must-win games for a team with mid-table aspirations. Scoring two goals in those games is appalling. Norwich has been a massive disappointment on the season after spending considerably in the summer. Divers – Whether it be Adnan Januzaj or Oscar, many of the best, young players in the league are deservedly earning the label of diver. Attempts to con match officials continues to take priority over self-respect. And managers are failing to get through to their players. This has to change. Managers continue to wax poetic about how they deal with these issues internally. But very little is done and nothing changes as the problem spreads. Mourinho is the biggest hypocrite, saying divers are a disgrace yet failing to acknowledge when his players do so. With faulty leadership as such, nothing will change. And the game is worse off because of it. Fulham Defending – Conceding 12 in four matches, including six at Hull, thanks for coming out. Mark Clattenburg – The match official has been drawn into more character damaging accusations, this time for inappropriate comments made towards Southampton midfielder Adam Lallana. The FA has cleared Clattenburg, but Southampton is calling for the official to not be appointed for their matches until the investigation is complete. Chelsea accused Clattenburg of making racist remarks last season. Although cleared that time as well, Clattenburg continues to be drawn into the news for all the wrong reasons. Missed calls and controversial decisions have also hurt the reputation of a true, up-and-coming referee. ATLANTA — Vladimir Radmanovic and Jannero Pargo, scoreless through three quarters, played unlikely lead roles to give the Hawks a comeback win. Radmanovic made the go-ahead 3-pointer with 11.9 seconds remaining and Atlanta rallied in the fourth quarter to beat the Milwaukee Bucks 99-94 on Friday night. Pargo scored 11 points and Radmanovic added nine — all on 3-pointers — in the final period. The Hawks, playing without leading scoring Joe Johnson, leaned on their reserves, including veterans Tracy McGrady and Jerry Stackhouse, for the comeback. McGrady had nine points, all in the final 12 minutes, and 11 rebounds. It was an important win for the short-handed Hawks, who had lost six of eight, including a disappointing home loss to Golden State on Wednesday night. The Hawks bench, which provided 32 of the teams 34 points in the fourth quarter, helped end the skid. “It was just beautiful to see that,” said Josh Smith, who had 24 points and 19 rebounds but sat out most of the fourth quarter with the other starters. Smith came off the bench for the final three minutes and had a key block on a shot by Drew Gooden after Radmanovics go-ahead 3-pointer over Ersan Ilyasova. “I was just happy to get in the mix of things,” Smith said. The Bucks, led by Brandon Jennings 34 points, were ahead by 15 in the third quarter. Atlanta pulled ahead with a 15-3 run to open the final period. McGrady, Pargo and Radmanovic hit 3-pointers in the run that gave Atlanta its first lead since the second quarter. Hawks coach Larry Drew said the reserves “did just a phenomenal job.” “The energy was unbelievable, and I was going to ride those guys to the very end, because they were the guys who were playing with the energy,” Drew said. Gooden, who had 24 points and 10 rebounds, hit two free throws with 1:16 remaining for a 92-92 tie. Smith answered with a jam before Ilyasova scored on a tip-in for a 94-94 tie. Radmanovic took a pass from McGrady and hit the go-ahead 3. “It was a tough shot,” Bucks coach Scott Skiles said. “Thats his shot.” Jennings wasnt as generous in his review of the shot by Radmanovic, a 3-point specialist. “He hit a big shot,” Jennings said. “I think its a lucky shot. We both played really well and he just hit a lucky shot.” Radmanovic said he gained confidence for his biggest shot by making two 3-pointers earlier in the period. “I made a couple shots before that and felt pretty good,” Radmanovic said. “I saw (Ilyasova) just turn his back on me for just a second and I found my spot to shoot.” Stackhouse made two free throws to add to the lead. Gooden said it was just the latest in a series of disappointments for the Bucks. “Its just frustrating,” Gooden said. "Its been the tale of the season. We come in playing as hard as we can, were coming up short. “Its tough. A tough night for us. The ball will fall our way eventually.” The Bucks, led by Jennings, closed the first half with a 13-2 run to lead 51-39 at the break. Jennings started the run with back-to-back 3-pointers. After stealing a pass from Smith, Jennings then added a running layup to cap his personal 8-0 run. The Hawks had 17 turnovers in the half. Atlanta outscored Milwaukee 34-18 in the final period. “We just couldnt make the big play,” Skiles said. "And they did. They made the big shots and were able to stop us enough and cause us to miss shots in the fourth quarter. The Hawks were without Johnson and backup shooting guard Willie Green. Each will miss at least two games. Kirk Hinrich made his second start, joining Jeff Teague in Atlantas backcourt. After missing two games and the All-Star game because of tendinitis in his left knee, Johnson returned to lead Atlanta with 18 points in Wednesday nights 85-82 loss to Golden State. Johnsons knee was stiff after playing more than 37 minutes. Drew said he wants to make sure Johnsons knee is stronger before he returns. Green left Wednesday nights game with lower back spasms. The Hawks, already missing centres Al Horford (torn left pectoral muscle) and Jason Collins (sprained left elbow), struggled early in the game without Johnson. Hinrich had five turnovers in the first half. Notes: Bucks G-F Mike Dunleavy missed the game. He returned to Milwaukee to be with his wife, who gave birth to a boy. … The Hawks are 10-0 when Smith scores 20 or more points. … The Hawks 17 turnovers in the first half were a season high. They had only six turnovers in the second half. … Beno Udrih had 12 points for Milwaukee. Love started practicing early for All-Star festivities, making six of 11 shots from 3-point range and totalling 32 points, 11 rebounds and eight assists to lead the Timberwolves to a 117-90 victory over the Nuggets on Wednesday night. PHOENIX — The Arizona Diamondbacks have designated Trevor Cahill for assignment, a move that could send the struggling right-hander to the minors. Cahill, acquired in a trade with Oakland in 2012, had lost his job in the rotation after a series of bad outings then struggled in a bullpen role. The team also placed third baseman Eric Chavez on the 15-day disabled list with a sore right knee. The Diamondbacks activated right-handed reliever J.J. Putz from the disabled list and recalled right-handed reliever Will Harris from Triple-A Reno. The Diamondbacks have 10 days to either trade Cahill, release him, outright him or option him to the minors. If they outright him, the pitcher would go on waivers and could be claimed by other teams. That and a trade are unlikely because Cahill is due to earn about $17 million in a contract that runs through next year, and Cahill seemed to be open to the idea of going to the minors, probably to Reno. “Our hope is to retain him,” Diamondbacks general manager Kevin Towers said. “We still think theres value there.” Cahill , 1-6 with a 5.66 ERA, had his best years with Oakland. In 2010, he was 18-8 for the As with a 2.97 ERA. “After everything thats happened, I still believe I can come back and be a starter and help this team win,” he said before Monday nights game against Houston. “I mean, theyve been nothing but supportive and I cant ask f or anything more.” Manager Kirk Giibson noted that Cahill is only 26.dddddddddddd “This games tough. Theres a lot of people that struggle,” Gibson said, “and they have to find a way to get back to what they can be. Again, its a tough game, but I still believe in Trevor. I have confidence in him. Hes young. Hes got that going for him.” Cahill was particularly aggravating to the Diamondbacks because at times he had spectacular stuff, but that didnt translate into success in games. “There are times when I come out of the pen and feel real good and starts when I feel really good, its just the starts that I dont feel sharp,” he said. “Ive just got to figure out a way to kind of get through it and still help the team win.” Towers said that Cahill is not suited for a bullpen role. “We think his best role is a starter,” Towers said. “Thats what we traded for is a starter. … Its tough to get a guy lengthened up to become a starter when hes pitching once every eight or nine days in relief.” Asked if he regretted the trade, Towers said that he doesnt look back once a deal is made. “I still believe in the kid,” he said. Cahill voiced confidence in the Diamondbacks front office. “Im sure theyll do right by me,” he said. “They havent given me any indication they wouldnt. Im just going to do whatever is best for the team. I want to stay here but I want to get better and be the guy that I think I can be.” cheap nfl jerseys cheap jerseys ’ ’ ’

SAN ANTONIO — Alan Pulido scored a hat trick to lead Mexico to a 4-0 victory over South Korea in an international friendly Wednesday. CHRIS GRANT (Cavs): The GM gets fired on Thursday after his team won only 29 per cent of its games during his tenure. Obviously, a totally undermanned Lakers team beating them on their home floor was the final straw. Wow, what a mess it is right now. Many folks thought with the addition of Jarrett Jack, Andrew Bynum, head coach Mike Brown and first overall pick Anthony Bennett that they would be knocking on the door for a seven or eight seed in the East. No such luck. Its been dysfunctional and the idea of signing LeBron James in the summer looks like a pipe dream and the ability to hold onto Kyrie Irving (in spite of what he says) is in serious doubt. Fragile business. 2. ENES KANTER (Jazz): Have watched him twice in person and on TV a bunch of times and I gotta confess, Im more of a Derrick Favors fan. Not sure both of these guys can co-exist. Kanter is averaging 12 and 6 and when I watch him I see a guy that is a bit robotic with his game. Yes hes a bruiser but its hard to play that style unless you have great skill to go with it. Still a work in progress. 3. CHRIS PAUL (Clippers): Its a bit chilly and rain is in the forecast here for later today in L.A. Rather this than snow and freezing temperatures. News that warmed me up today was the fact that the All-Star point guard wont make his return from injury until Sunday so the Raptors catch a break not seeing him. But it will still be a very difficult game to win for Toronto here on Friday. It will be great for Paul to get on the court this weekend and play next weekend at his first professional stop (New Orleans) in the All-Star Game. Good for the sport. Terrific player and class act. 4. RAPTORS at KINGS: It was the fourth time in the last few weeks (Celtics, Lakers, Bobcats) that the Raptors played down to their competition and “Played the Record”. Games like these hhaunt teams and cause sleepless nights for coaches.dddddddddddd. I felt for Dwane Casey on Thursday night – he tried everything to get his team going with little success. Im sorry but this team isnt good enough to overlook anyone. Totally got outplayed and didnt deserve to win. Winning teams have real good habits. This team still floats big time with its focus. Its easy to get up for the name teams but as usual guys get it backwards. Its really hard to win those games. Play really hard against the teams you can beat and youll have a really nice season and then steal the occasional game when you play a team thats in the upper class. Tough lessons to learn. Time they actually learn the lesson and do something about it. You want the third our fourth seed and home court in the first round of the Playoffs? Punch the clock, bring the lunch bucket and hard hat and compete like crazy. You do that – youll have success. Time to grow up a bit. I have no issues with losing if you lay it all on the line to the best of your ability and the other guy happens to be better that night – that happens. Shake his hand and hold your head high and get ready for the next one. Stop teasing folks. This team is good enough and has good people on it – theyll figure it out. 5. TOM THIBODEAU (Bulls): I like what he said recently about playing time. Hes the boss and he and only he will determine who gets the privilege that you have to EARN to play and finish games. Carlos Boozer is upset with his fourth quarter role of late. I have a suggestion – play really hard and well and guess what? Youll play and finish games. Coaches want to and have to win. Its your job to please your coach, not the other way around. A coachs ultimate loyalty has to be to winning and team. Nothing else comes close. Believe me you could coach a guy you completely dislike personally yet youll play him every minute if he helps you win. AGADIR, Morocco - Bayern Munich closed in on its fifth trophy of 2013 by brushing aside Guangzhou Evergrande 3-0 Tuesday to reach the Club World Cup final. Franck Ribery and Mario Mandzukic scored first-half goals to break open the Asian champions disciplined defence, and the Germans never relented as Mario Goetze added the third in the second half. “We dominated the game,” said Bayern coach Pep Guardiola, who won two Club World Cup titles with Barcelona. “And when that happens the opponent cant (play) his game.” The Champions League winners will face either Atletico Mineiro of Brazil or Moroccan champion Raja Casablanca in Saturdays final. Atletico, led by Ronaldinho, play the local favourite in Marrakech on Wednesday. Bayern is bidding to win its first Club World Cup after having twice won the tournament when it was the Intercontinental Cup. Bayern, which is looking to add to its haul of Bundesliga, German Cup, Champions League and European Super Cup titles, also ensured that the European champion reached the final for the 10th time in as many editions. Bayerns starting lineup saw few changes to the squad that has started the Bundesliga season unbeaten, except for Arjen Robbens absence because of a knee injury. Bayern completely controlled play from the outset although its opponent showed a few flashes of danger on counterattacks through Dario Conca and Muriqui, whose poor touch wasted a chance to go clean on goalkeeper Manuel Neuer early on. “The coach really got us tuned in, we wanted ball possession to limit them and the counter attack,” Bayern captain Philipp Lahm said. “I think we did that.” Guangzhou coach Marcello Lippi said his team would defend its goal and it succeeded admirably early on. With a small contingent of Bayern fans among the 27,311 fans at the Agadir Stadium, cheers went up as Thiago Alcantara chested down a cross but swiped his 11th-minute effort off the post. Toni Kroos rattled a hard shot off the underside of the crossbar in the 25th before Ribery forced Zeng into a low save as momentum built toward the opening goal. Thiago had an effort cleared but the ball fell to Ribery, who smashed a low volley inside the far post in the 40th. Four minutes later, Mandzukic dove low to head Thiagos cross into goal for 2-0. Bayern maintained that momentum after the break as Goetze saw his shot from outside the area deflect off defender Sun Xiang over Zeng in the 47th. Ribery found the crossbar again from a tight angle in the 67th before Zeng pushed Philipp Lahms close-range effort off the crossbar in the waning moments. “There was nothing left to do, (or) to change (in the team) so I couldnt do much, so I just sat down and watched the game,” Lippi said through a translator. "We didnt attack as much as we would have wanted. “Honestly speaking, there wasnt much of a match.” . – Former NFL safety Darren Sharper pleaded not guilty Thursday to charges that he drugged and raped two women he met at a West Hollywood night club, while the emergence of a new accuser in Florida left him under investigation in five states. "With the beginning to the season that Ive had, beginning with the Canadian trials in August, I have nothing to doubt in myself.(SportsNetwork.com) – The Texas Rangers try to put an end to a three-game slide Saturday as they clash with the Toronto Blue Jays in the second of a three-game set at Globe Life Park in Arlington. Drew Hutchison went the distance for the Jays, walking one and fanning six as he picked up his second win of the campaign. “He was tremendous,” Blue Jays manager John Gibbons said of his starting pitcher. “He went toe to toe with [Darvish], matched him, and ended up getting the win. It was a battle on both sides. Both guys were really good.” Now batting .320 on the season, Melky Cabrera knocked in both runs for the visitors and drew a pair of walks, helping to offset the performances of Jose Bautista and Brett Lawrie at the plate as they each struck out three times for a squad that is sitting in third place in the AL East, trailing both Baltimore and the Yankees entering play on Saturday. The shutout was the seventh of the season for the Toronto staff, second-most in the American League behind only Texas which has notched nine in just 42 contests. The first seven-game winner in the majors heads back to the mound this evening as Mark Buehrle takes the ball for the visiting Jays. Outside of an 8-1 loss to Boston late last month, Buehrle has been virtually untouchable with his 2.04 ERA over the course of 53 innings. The left-hander is currently riding a three-game win streak, thanks to a victory against the LA Angels earlier this week. Buehrle lasted a total of six innings, giving up two runs on six hits and an uncharacteristic five walks, but still came out on the right side of the 7-3 decision. Now in his 115th major league campaign, Buehrle has a career mark of 13-5 and a 3.dddddddddddd14 ERA in 22 total games versus Texas. Now six games off the pace in the American League West where they are fourth in the division standings, the Rangers were shut out for the second time in the last three outings on Friday night in the series opener, 2-0, marking the clubs fifth loss in six tries. Texas managed a mere three hits last night, one each by Adrian Beltre, Leonys Martin and Rougned Odor, wasting another strong outing by hurler Yu Darvish who allowed just two runs on five hits and struck out 11 over eight innings of work. “Offensively were capable of doing a lot of damage,” noted Texas outfielder Alex Rios after the outing. “Were not there yet. Were all still positive and believe we can do damage. But its a little frustrating when were not seeing the real power of our offense.” As for the Rangers, theyll hand the ball to Robbie Ross Jr. Also a left hander, Ross has been saddled with four defeats in his last five outings, the most recent of those coming against Boston at home on Sunday. For the third time in a row Ross was tagged for at least five runs, based on six hits and a couple of walks through 6 2/3 innings. Just three seasons into his major league career, Ross has yet to register a decision versus Toronto, even though this will be his sixth appearance against the club all-time. Toronto, which captured six wins in seven meetings last season versus the Rangers, is tops in the AL in home runs at the moment with 56 through 43 games, while Texas is second from the bottom with just 26. Battling early-season back issues that have cut into his practice time and severely affected his on-course performance, Tiger Woods hopes of ending his five-year major drought in 2014 appear to be in danger. Hes 38 years old, hes got plenty of time to break Jack Nicklaus record, but I think, as Nicklaus said, it all depends on his health, and right now it doesnt look too good, does it? his former coach Hank Haney said during an appearance Tuesday on TSN 1050. Haney: Woods major chances not looking good . Blake Griffin had 26 points, 11 rebounds and six assists Sunday night as Los Angeles stormed out to a 31-point lead in the first quarter with its All-Star point guard back on the court and pummeled the Philadelphia 76ers 123-78. .J. Miles are out for Tuesdays game against Sacramento because of injuries. The holiday season is upon us. Its a time of year for family and friends, gifts and surprises, and a hectic Premier League holiday fixture list. As we approach the halfway point of the season, the table is as topsy-turvy as ever. The unpredictable nature doesnt stop with team performances. Individual contributions have been erratic and entirely volatile. There are players, however, who have been altogether consistent. Many who have come out of obscurity, and/or have performed above what was expected. Before the season they were overlooked or underestimated. They have answered the critics and become top Premier League players. Lets call these players true holiday surprises, or gifts to their teams and supporters. Here is the Premier Leagues ‘Surprise starting XI. Happy Holidays! Goalkeeper Tim Howard (Everton) – Inconsistent play has always been Howards Achilles heel. This year hes been the leagues best shot-stopper and has been a rock behind a team on the rise. Howard has a joint league best eight clean sheets and Everton have conceded the joint fewest goals (15 in 16 games). The American has never been on better form, boding well for club and country. Honourable Mention: Artur Boruc (Southampton) Defenders RB: Seamus Coleman (Everton) – It was rightfully questioned where best to play the Irishman. A midfield role seemed beyond him when deputized. Right back was always the most logical fit. The 25-year-old has grown leaps and bounds over last season, as comfortable in attack as defending. Three goals to his tally contribute to a more balanced team attack, providing an alternative to the reliance of attacking down the left. He is one of three players in the team to play every minute this season. The argument can be made he has been the top right back in the league thus far. CB: Dejan Lovren (Southampton) – The Croatian was a significant signing from Lyon last summer and an absolute bargain at £8.5 million. Lovren has only missed one game, a 2-0 loss at Arsenal, one of only three games the team has conceded more than one goal. His leadership has been an asset in a young team, and although still just 24, plays with much more maturity than his years. Lovren leads the spine of the team that is among the best in the league. CB: Steven Caulker (Cardiff City) – Another shrewd £8.5 million purchase, the 21-year-old represents the present and future for Cardiff City. Its puzzling why a club as steadfast on development as Spurs wouldnt give the player a longer look. Caulker needed opportunity and the move to Wales has revitalized his promising career. He has the faith of his teammates and the manager, serving as stand-in captain. Caulkers already one of the best defenders in the air and has also blocked the most shots in the Premier League. Hes played in all 16 games, with the highlight scoring the game winner in the South Wales derby. LB: Kieran Gibbs – Arsenals back four was in shambles a season ago. The entire back line has improved, but its Gibbs who has developed into an every match left back. The stats dont flatter, but his week-in, week-out influence is certainly felt. The wingback duo of Gibbs and Bacary Sagna down the right has contributed extensively to a fluid Arsenal attack. Gibbs has always had promise. But whether Arsene Wenger could rely upon him was debated. The acquisition of Nacho Monreal last season was a wake-up call. Gibbs has kept the Spaniard a peripheral player. Honourabe Mention: Curtis Davies (Hull City) Midfielders RM: Jordan Henderson (Liverpool) – The much-maligned Henderson has puts his many critics behind him to become a lynchpin for Brendan Rodgers. The manager has branded Hendo the most improved player in the league, and the assessment isnt far off. Henderson still looks awkward at times, needs to get better in front of goal and may never live up to his £20 million dollar purchase price. But hes only 23, is the only Liverpool player to start every Premier League game, and has been a versatile player down the right side. His passing has also been top rate. He will continue to be relied upon with Steven Gerrard out through injury. CM: Aaron Ramsey (Arsenal) – The story has been well told. No player has shown improvement like the meteoric rise of the Welshman. A team-best eight goals and 21 shots on goal, an impressive six assists, and nefound poise on the ball, Ramsey has been the best player on the leagues top team. The potential has always been there. This season its been realized. Arsenal has a versatile, box-to-box midfielder to build around in the 22-year-old. The future is bright. CM: Ki Sung-Yeung (Sunderland) – Get to know this name. The 24-year-old South Korean International moved on loan from Swansea, bringing his composed, pass first approach into Gus Poyets team. He has become a coonsistent starter under Poyet and has been a real threat.dddddddddddd A Capital One Cup game-winner against Chelsea Tuesday was the icing on the cake on a run of form making onlookers believer Sunderland may find a way out of the relegation zone. Hes good with both feet and is passing accurately at a rate of 89 percent. LM: Adnan Januzaj (Manchester United) – The 18-year-old was playing in the Dallas Cup last spring. Now, hes a Manchester United first-team regular. Januzaj introduced himself to the world scoring twice in a crucial come from behind victory at Sunderland in his first career start. The creative midfielder caught the eye of United supporters on the pre-season tour. Fellow youngsters Wilfried Zaha and Jesse Lingard seemed further along in their development. But its Januzajs maturity on the ball that has impressed most. Hes the best attacking option on the United flanks at present time. Honourable Mentions: Jordon Mutch (Cardiff City), Jonny Howson (Norwich City) Forwards Daniel Sturridge (Liverpool) – Hype has always surrounded the England International, yet production hasnt always followed. Liverpools bright start to the campaign can rightfully be attributed to Sturridge holding down the fort while Luis Suarez missed the first five matches through suspension. Sturridge scored four goals over that span, including three match winners. Injury has setback Sturridges breakout campaign. A big second half for the striker will be essential towards a potential Liverpool return to the Champions League. Shola Amoebi (Newcastle) – The Nigerian International has yet to score this season, but his performance is better assessed on what he means for the team. Amoebis link-up play between the midfield and targetman Loic Remy has been instrumental in Newcastles recent turn-around. In eight games Amoebis started, Newcastle has picked up 17 points and only lost once. His movement off the ball, creation of space and use of his size has made the forgotten man at Newcastle now an important player in Alan Pardews revamped team selection. Honourable Mention: Jay Rodriguez (Southampton) Other Musings – The Champions League draw may have serious implications on the Premier League when all is said and done. Manchester Citys mouth-watering fixture with Barcelona will test Citys resolve. It has always been suggested Manuel Pellegrini was brought in for Champions League success. Navigating through both competitions is no easy task. Fortunate for City, the two games with Barcelona are sandwiched between ‘soft fixtures: Sunderland and Stoke City both at home, then Aston Villa at the Etihad and Hull City away. These games will allow Pellegrini to properly rotate his squad. Arsenal meanwhile plays tournament favourites Bayern Munich. Added to the distraction is a game against Manchester United before their first meeting, and rivals Spurs following the second game with Bayern Munich. – Citys depth has already been tested through the prolonged absence of captain Vincent Kompany. Squad depth will continue to be challenged with top goalscorer Sergio Aguero out up to two months with a calf injury and right-back Pablo Zabaleta suffering a hamstring injury. These are critical losses – Aguero, a true game-winner, and Zabaleta who is top class down the City right hand side without appropriate cover at the position. – Wayne Rooneys injured status is a massive blow to United. The nature and extent of his injury has yet to be revealed. With a soft holiday fixture list ahead, this was a key time for Manchester United to make up ground. No Rooney and Robin van Persie for extended periods could force Uniteds hand to act in the January transfer window. Title contention may be out of reach. But Champions Leaue qualification cannot be. – How much can Liverpool afford to pay Luis Suarez to keep him at Anfield? And is a blank check enough? Is Champions League mandatory for a Suarez stay? Whatever Liverpools next step may be, inherent risk is involved. This is Suarez, after all. This saga is the highest stakes game being played right now in the league. – Game of the Week ahead: Arsenal v Chelsea (Monday December 23, 2013): both teams will be eager to respond; Arsenal from a dismantling at the Etihad and Chelsea coming off a Capital One Cup defeat against Sunderland. Things are boiling over for Jose Mourinho. His defenders continue to struggle, conceding soft goals and hes not getting enough out of his collection of unconvincing strikers. Both teams have title aspirations. Both have much to prove. – Two more coaching casualties this week, taking the total of managers fired this season to five. Odds on favour to go next: Malky Mackay. Theres too much dysfunction at Cardiff City behind the scenes. Youd have to worry for the team on the field if they lose their glue in the manager, Mackay. AUBURN, Ala. — Auburn didnt bother waiting until after the Southeastern Conference championship game to give football coach Gus Malzahn a new six-year contract worth $3.85 million annually. Athletic director Jay Jacobs announced the first-year coachs new deal Friday night, the eve of the third-ranked Tigers game against No. 5 Missouri in Atlanta. Malzahn has led Auburn to an 11-1 season after taking over a team that won three games and lost all eight SEC contests in 2012. “As Ive said before, we want coach Malzahn to be at Auburn for a long time,” Jacobs said. “The new contract includes a raise and extension and is our statement that Auburn is committed to coach Malzahn for the long haul. While this season has been remarkable, Im equally excited about the future of our program under his leadership. The future of Auburn football is very bright.” The present is pretty bright, too. Auburn hired Malzahn last December and gave him a five-year contract worth $2.3 million annually. The new deal represents a $1.5 million pay hike and includes a $250,000 raise each year. Malzahn will make $5.1 million in the final year of the contract. Auburn is in line to play in the Sugar Bowl and possibly for a national championship with a win over Missouri. Malzahns Tigers upset No. 1 Alabama last weekend. University President Dr. Jay Gogue said he and Jimmy Rane, president pro tem of Auburns board of trustees, supported Jacobs recommendation to give Malzahn the big raise and six-year deal. “A lot of programs would love to have coach Malzahn, so this is a good move that allows him to continue taking Auburn football where our fans want it,” Gogue said. Malzahn has a chance to win a league title in each of his first two seasons as head coach. The former Auburn offensive co-ordinator led Arkansas State to a Sun Belt Conference championship last season before returning to replace his ex-boss, Gene Chizik He was offensive co-ordinator for Auburns 2010 team that won the national title and Malzahns star pupil, Cam Newton, captured the Heisman Trophy. Jacobs said earlier this week that he had reached out to Malzahns agent, Jimmy Sexton, a couple of weeks ago. He said Thursday that he and Sexton hadnt spoken since. FRANKFURT, Germany — Bayer Leverkusen secured a 2-1 victory over Hoffenheim on Friday with a goal that wasnt and Hoffenheim lodged a protest hoping for a replay. Stefan Kiesslings header at the near post from a corner narrowly missed the target, the ball hit the outside of the net but rolled into the goal through a hole in the netting. Although television replays left no doubt, referee Felix Brych ignored pleas from Hoffenheim players, who also appeared to be taken by surprise at first. Brych was shown the breach in the netting but the FIFA referee shrugged and stood by his decision as the game had already resumed. “Its a scandal. That was no goal, there are no two ways about it. We are definitely going to protest,” Hoffenheims managing director Alexander Rosen said. His Leverkusen counterpart, Rudi Voeller, also said it was “definitely” not a goal and said his team was in an “uncomfortable situation.” “Thats not how we wanted to win the game,” Voeller said. “The fair result would have been a 2-2.” Kiesslings first reaction was to turn away in frustration at missing the chance and hold his head in his hands. Only when his teammates surrounded him in celebration did Kiessling also raise his arms in tepid triumph. “I didnt really see it, I turned away but I was surprised to see the ball in. I didnt know how it got in,” Kiessling said. The incident resembled Thomas Helmers famous “phantom goal” for Bayern Munich against Nuremberg in 1994 that finished in a 2-1 Bayern win. That match was replayed and Bayern won 5-0 to capture the title. Brych said, “there was a corner and then the ball was in the net.” “I had a slight doubt but the reaction from the players was clear, nobody was against (the decision),”; Brych said.dddddddddddd Brych said that none of the players — including Kiessling — had told him that it wasnt a goal. It wasnt Brychs only controversial moment. He disallowed a Hoffenheim goal that was clearly onside and incorrectly awarded a penalty to Hoffenheim, although the spot kick was missed. Sidney Sam scored against the run of play to put Leverkusen ahead after 26 minutes and Kiesslings “goal” doubled the lead in the 70th before Sven Shipplock pulled one back for Hoffenheim late in the match. In the 82nd, Brych awarded a penalty for Hoffenheim although Roberto Hilbert played the ball and Roberto Firmino fell over him. The tackle was outside the box anyway. Firmino himself took the shot but Leverkusen goalkeeper Bernd Leno stopped it. Firmino pounced on the rebound but hit the post and Emir Spahics clearing attempt also hit the post before the ball was finally kicked away. Sam found the space to slot into the low corner despite facing three Hoffenheim defenders in the 26th. Gonzalo Castro did the work, delivering the ball after an unchallenged run down the middle and Sam scored his league-high seventh goal of the season. Hoffenheim was the team dictating play but could not use its chances and also had the misfortune to have a regular goal mistakenly disallowed for a non-existent offside. Kevin Vollands attempt was blocked at the last moment, Sejad Salihovics free kick was cleared on the line and Anthony Modeste missed Hoffenheims best chance when Leverkusen goalkeeper Bernd Leno managed to divert his point-blank shot into the corner. While Hoffenheim wasted half a dozen chances, Leverkusen did look dangerous on the rare break. Modeste had another header saved in the second half, while on the other side Castros shot was palmed away by Koen Casteels. Tampa, FL – Karri Ramo stopped 31 shots and the Calgary Flames beat the Tampa Bay Lightning, 4-1, on Thursday. Mike Cammalleri and Kevin Westgarth scored 15 seconds apart in the first period for the Flames, who had lost three of four coming in. Curtis Glencross scored twice late in the game. The loss moved Tampa Bay into the third position in the Atlantic Division. The team is tied with Montreal in points and both teams have played the same amount of games, but Montreal has two more wins in regulation or overtime, to hold the tiebreaker. Ondrej Palat had the lone goal of the game for the Lightning, who have dropped two of their last three games. Ben Bishop gave up three goals on 24 shots. Calgary got the first goal on a Bishop miscue, as he held the puck behind his net and tried to pass it up the left side, but it went right to Cammalleri and he put the puck into the open net at 10:20. Just 15 seconds later, the Flames made it a 2-0 game as Christopher Breens shot from the right point hit off of two players and Westgarth shot it home from the right side. The only goal of the second period went to Tampa when Matt Carle fired a shot on net from the slot, and Palat slipped home the rebound from the right side for his 20th of the year. Tampa threw 12 shots on net in the third period, but took a penalty with 2:19 to go and Glencross made them pay as he worked a give-and-go with Cammalleri and put home the rebound of Cammalleris shot from in front with 1:56 to play. Glencross scored an empty-netter in the final seconds to account for the final score. Game Notes Calgary plays at Florida on Friday … Tampa hosts Dallas on Saturday … Tampa had won the previous two games, and Calgary won for the first time as guests in the series since a 9-6 victory on Dec. 13, 2007 … The Flames were 1-for-2 on the power play while Tampa was 0-for-3. The team would likely begin play in 2017, when the $1 billion retractable roof stadium is set to open next to the Georgia Dome to provide a new home for the NFL Falcons. “Our discussions with Major League Soccer continue, but we do not have a final agreement at this time,” Kim Shreckengost, the chief administrative officer for Blanks AMB Group, said Tuesday in an email to The Associated Press. “We hope to complete the agreement soon, at which time we will make a formal announcement.” The Atlanta Journal-Constitution has reported that a new team will be announced April 16. “We are continuing discussions with Arthur Blank to bring a Major League Soccer expansion team to Atlanta,” said Dan Courtemanche, a spokesman for MLS. “However, we have not finalized an agreement at this time.” The MLS has long coveted the Atlanta market, the largest in the U.S. without a team, as it moves toward its goal of expanding to 24 franchises. The 19-team league has already announced expansion franchises in New York City and Orlando that are scheduled to begin play next season, in addition to a provisional franchise in Miami owned by a group that includes David Beckham. That team is contingent oon a deal for a new soccer-specific stadium in south Florida.dddddddddddd There are no such concerns in Atlanta, where the Falcons new stadium was designed to accommodate an MLS team, providing Blank with additional revenue streams for the elaborate facility. While most MLS teams are moving toward smaller stadiums that are built solely for soccer, the Atlanta franchise would follow the model of teams in Seattle and Vancouver, which play in larger facilities downsized to provide a more intimate setting. For instance, Vancouvers BC Place has a curtain system that blocks off the upper deck, reducing capacity from 54,000 to 21,000. Atlantas new stadium will likely have a similar capability. Atlanta had two franchises in the old North American Soccer League. The Chiefs won the leagues first championship in 1968 but folded after the 1973 season, having spent their final year known as the Apollos. The Chiefs returned to the NASL in 1979 when the Colorado Caribous moved to Atlanta. That incarnation lasted only three seasons, never drawing as many as 8,000 fans a game before folding due to heavy financial losses. Atlanta has a team in a new version of the NASL, a league that ranks below MLS on the U.S. soccer ladder. The Silverbacks play at a 7,500-seat stadium on the outskirts of the city and are apparently not involved in talks on the MLS expansion team. Chicago, IL – Less than 24 hours after acquiring the former All-Star from Cleveland, the Chicago Bulls have waived center Andrew Bynum. The Bulls sent forward Luol Deng to the Cavaliers for Bynum, who was suspended by Cleveland for conduct detrimental to the team on Dec. 28, and three future draft picks early Tuesday morning. Bynum made 19 starts in 24 games in his only season with the Cavs, averaging 8.4 points and 5.2 rebounds per contest. He was shooting just 41.9 percent from the field, and Cleveland was 9.7 points per 100 possessions better with him off the floor. Bynums $12 million contract for this season would have been guaranteed had Chicago opted not to cut ties before 5 p.m. Tuesday. Bynum will be free to sign with any team in the league once he clears waivers. Nike Roshe Run Prezzo Donna . LOS ANGELES - Keith Yandle scored the tying goal midway through the third period and Jeff Halpern netted the winner with 3:05 left, leading the Phoenix Coyotes to a 4-3 victory over the Los Angeles Kings on Monday night. Rob Klinkhammer and Mikkel Boedker scored 63 seconds apart in the first period for the Coyotes, who handed the Kings their third straight loss and took over sole possession of eighth place in the Western Conference. Mike Smith made 36 saves. Marian Gaborik, defenceman Alec Martinez and rookie Tanner Pearson scored for the Kings, who were without captain Dustin Brown for a second straight game because of a lower body injury. Jonathan Quick stopped 23 shots for Los Angeles, which fell to 21-1 when leading after two periods. Yandle tied it with a slap shot from just inside the blue line after he intercepted defenceman Matt Greenes attempted clearing pass from behind the net. Greene was a healthy scratch in the previous eight games. Halpern put Phoenix ahead 4-3 with a shot from the left circle that appeared to carom off Quicks glove and then the post before it bounced to Coyotes captain Shane Doan for another point blank shot that Quick stopped with a sprawling save. But an overhead replay showed that Halperns shot crossed the goal line before it hit Quicks stick. Quick missed a chance to tie Rogie Vachons franchise record of 171 wins. Darryl Sutter will also have to wait for his 500th regular-season victory as an NHL coach. Yandle leads Phoenix with 49 points, including an assist on Boedkers goal. The Kings outshot Phoenix 15-2 in the second period, turning a 2-1 deficit into a 3-2 lead. Gaborik got the puck in the low slot from Anze Kopitar and took a shot that glanced off defenceman Derek Morris stick and over Smiths glove. It was his eighth goal this season and second in six games since he was acquired from Columbus on Feb. 5. Smith, who leads in games played, starts, saves and shots faced, withstood an early barrage from the Kings before the Coyotes took a 2-0 lead. Klinkhammer scored his 11th goal on a rebound at 6:33, and Boedker added his 17th during a power play. The Kings got within 2-1 when Pearson, in his third stint with the club this season, scored his second goal in 14 NHL games at 17:02 of the first. Los Angeles tied it at 6:50 of the second with Martinezs eighth goal. Phoenixs Martin Hanzal, who returned after missing seven games with a lower-body injury, assisted on Klinkhammers goal. NOTES: The Kings are 126-2-11 in their last 139 regular-season games when leading after two periods. The only other regulation loss was on Jan. 22, 2013 at Colorado. … Kings F Justin Williams is expected to play in his 200th consecutive game on Thursday. … Gaborik has 21 goals in 30 career games against Phoenix. … Pearsons first goal came in his regular-season debut on Nov. 14 against the New York Islanders. wholesale jerseys . No way, absolutely no way. If you do, where do you go from there? If you want to progress as a team and as a club you have no chance if you sell players like that.FIVE QUICK NBA THOUGHTS: 1. LANDRY FIELDS (Raptors): He is looking much more comfortable each time I watch him play. Thats a good development for a guy that had injury issues/surgery to deal with last year. He lost his shot mechanics and, in many ways, his confidence. His shot release is still a bit slow but in time it will get better. Hell have to be conscious of that when he takes perimeter shots and make sure he has time to set himself up and get it off. His shot preparation will be very important. Hes a smart, team oriented player and does all the little things that coaches love and has a winning personality/approach. Too often folks focus on the contract – its not his fault that he got the deal he was offered, and who wouldnt take it? Bottom line for the Raptors, to compete for a playoff spot this year theyre going to have to find some consistent productivity from their second unit (an area of concern right now) and Fields is a guy that you hope can be ready to contribute. 2. REGGIE JACKSON (Thunder): Talk about a guy whos on the radar this year in OKC. With the trade of James Harden and the free agent departure of Kevin Martin to the Timberwolves, Kevin Durant and Russell Westbrook will need some heavy perimeter support to make up the difference and keep their team at a high level. In his third NBA season out of Boston College, this is the year you have your fingers crossed his level of play is elevated and reliable. Hes got solid versatility in his game, has decent shot making ability and hell compete for you on the defensive end. Now its all got to come together and quick. Usually in the third pro season you find out an awful lot about a guy with the growth of his skills, strength, and basketball IQ. You focus on his dedication and overall makeup and whether hes got what it takes to take that next step. Time has arrived and hes going to get a shot each night. Take advantage. 3. LA CLIPPERS: The Clippers have decided to cover the Lakers Championship banners and retired numbers when they play their home games at the Staples Center. This has caused quite a stir and to be perfectly frank it should have happened the day they started playing games at the arena. Theyve been the JV team in LA for too long and they owe the Lakers organization and their former greats absolutely nothing.dddddddddddd Theyre a tenant of the arena just like the Lakers and can do whatever theyd like when its their building. Its their money and their time. I always wondered why they would ever even acknowledge the other team. This is competition; its ruthless and thats the way it would be if the shoe was on the other foot, thats for sure. 4. CHARLIE VILLANUEVA (Pistons): Villanueva will be starting his ninth NBA season next week and the question is if hell ever play at a consistently productive level as a pro. Hes coming off two poor seasons in Detroit where he averaged 7 ppg and 3.5 rpg while shooting an abysmal 38% from the field for a lousy team. Are you part of the solution or part of the problem? Ill never forget a conversation I had with an NBA College Scouting Director when he was a player at UConn. He said that Villanueva would end up playing for at least 4-5 NBA teams and be one of those guys that youd be fascinated by his skills and potential and yet always be frustrated that you never got the high level nights enough. After former Raptors GM Rob Babcock drafted him in controversial fashion hes had stints as well with the Bucks and now the Pistons. I like him, hes a good guy and not a problem player, yet hes just not getting it done. At age 29, its time. Now or never. 5. THOMAS ROBINSON (Blazers): Robinson is in his second season and already on his third NBA team after playing his rookie year in Sacramento and Houston. Is this another guy who will bounce around and not fulfill his potential? Honestly, I dont know yet. He averaged an underwhelming 4.8 ppg and 4.5 rpg in his rookie year; thats not going to make anyone happy for a lottery pick out of Kansas. I liked him in college yet I was a bit concerned with his size and still unpolished game. He reminds me of Truck Robinson (Im dating myself!) who had a good career (15 and 9) in his best days with Washington, Phoenix and New York. He needs to focus on being a terror on the glass and the other stuff will work itself out. Hell get a shot at good playing time in Portland and Blazers fans will hope the light comes on this season and he takes that significant jump as a player.
